Sparks still winless against the spread at home

The Los Angeles Sparks got their first straight-up win of the season Thursday, but it did not help their backers as the team managed to win by five points with a closing spread of -5. Eight games into the season, the Sparks are now 0-3-1 against the spread in LA.

The Sparks are still last in the WNBA in offense with an average of 68.4 points per game.

LA plays Friday when they host Tulsa.

Royals offense sputtering during losing skid

The Kansas City Royals tied their longest losing streak of the season with a 2-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins Thursday. During the Royals four game losing skid, they've averaged a mere 1.5 runs per game and have been shutout twice.

KC will look to avoid their longest losing streak of the season Friday when they meet the Twins again.

Indians-Rays series goes over in every game

The Cleveland Indians took advantage of a hapless Tampa Bay Rays club during their four-game set, with the over hitting in every game thanks to the Tribes' offense.

With an average closing total just south of 7, the Indians averaged 6.5 runs through the series.

The Indians start a three game series with the Pirates Monday as the Rays kick off a series with the Yankees in New York.

Marlins' Fernandez returns with a boom

Jose Fernandez's hitting was even better than his pitching.

Fernandez, making his return to the Miami Marlins rotation after Tommy John elbow surgery and a nearly 14-month recovery process, slugged a solo home run, sparking a four-run Miami rally in the fifth inning.

That led to a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants.

"We got a win -- that's all I can ask for," Fernandez said. "I'm healthy."

Fernandez, who hadn't pitched in a major league game since May 9, 2014, allowed seven hits and no walks, striking out six and reaching 99 mph on the radar gun.

He gave up a single and a double to the first two batters he faced, setting up a two-run Giants first inning. But then he settled down, retiring the side in order in the second and sixth innings.

In fact, after the rocky first inning, the only damage he allowed was a fifth inning solo home run by Giants center fielder Gregor Blanco, who pulled a 94-mph fastball to the upper deck in right field.

Marlins manager Dan Jennings, perhaps hoping for another Fernandez homer, let him bat in the bottom of the sixth. Fernandez took a ball and then swung and missed at three straight pitches, ending his day.

In total, Fernandez threw 89 pitches, 68 of them for strikes, mixing his fastball and off-speed stuff effectively.

He went 1-for-3 at the plate.

"I would have loved to have pitched better," Fernandez said. "But we got the first one out of the way with a win -- that's exciting."

Red Sox at midseason: 37-44, same as last year

A miserable season for the Boston Red Sox is taking an upturn.

By scoring eight runs in the first inning Thursday, mostly against rookie left-hander Matt Boyd, the Red Sox were able to absorb a mediocre effort from their own starter, left-hander Wade Miley, to win 12-6 over the Toronto Blue Jays.

It was Boston's 81st game of the season -- the halfway point -- and after a 5-2 road trip, the Red Sox equaled their unimpressive mark after 81 games last season, 37-44.

The winning trip -- two of three at Tampa Bay and three of four at Toronto -- helped the club's frame of mind.

"Without a doubt," manager John Farrell said. "And a trip that we needed to claw our way back to within six (games of the lead in the American League East).

"Granted, we're not looking at the scoreboard every night but, at the same time, the way we had gone through the first 2 1/2 months of the season in the division, to go 5-2 was certainly timely, and we go back home with a little momentum."

The Red Sox open a three-game series Friday with the Houston Astros, who lead the American League West.

"We're hopeful that it does continue," Farrell said. "We've been able to go through this stretch here with solid starting pitching. Tonight was a little bit shaky, but Wade (Miley) kept it together good enough. Our starters have been able to allow our offense to get on the board early and keep things in check."

Well, not quite on Thursday. The Red Sox scored eight runs before Miley pitched, and then he gave back half of the lead in the second inning.

Fortunately for Boston, the Blue Jays stranded 14 runners on the night.

"Wade turned in what I would consider a blue-collar night," Farrell said. "He didn't have much command, anywhere consistent to where he's been, but found a way to make some big pitches."

Bauer strong on the road, Indians not capitalizing

Trevor Bauer has shown his best stuff away from Progressive Field with a 1.69 ERA while holding batters to a .164 batting average.

Despite Bauer's superior play on the road this season, the Cleveland Indians are just 4-3 in Bauer's road starts.

The Tribe is currently +123 when they vist PNC Park and the Pirates Friday.

Teams unable to score at Nationals Park

The Washington Nationals have won their past six home games thanks to their pitching and defense. Those six contests have seen the Nats opponents score a combined five runs.

The Nats have sported an average scoring margin of +4.4 runs during that span.

Washington will play host to the San Francisco Giants Friday with the Nats currently -153.

The Chicago Cubs have gone under in six of Jason Hammel's past seven starts. Hammel has been posted some solid numbers during those starts with the rightie only allowing 2.6 runs per game.

Arizona -160

I will lay the heavy chalk here today with the D-Backs at home..The Rockies have gone ice cold in recent games now..In the last 5 game sthe rockies have scored a total of 13 runs..In the last 4 games just 5 runs scored..So it's very clear the Rockies on the road are struggling a bit..They will go up against Chase Anderson tonight who is coming off back to back road starts in which he split..He lost just over a week ago to the Rockies in Colorado..He got lit up for 8 hits and 8 runs in that game..This game he will have a better chance to get himself back into the win column again though..Anderson has had a ton of road starts this year, but at home Anderson pitchers very well..His last two starts in Arizona he has only allowed a total of 3 ER..His strikeouts have been down, but i feel he will bounce back here in a revenge situation tonight. When the D-Backs have Anderson on the mound they have won 4 out of the last 5 games he has taken the hill..The D-Backs are one of the better socring teams in the league and last night they just put up another 8 runs...Rockies will send Kendricks to the mound and he is one of the owrst in the league IMO..Kendricks is 3-10 on the year with a 6.07 ERA..His WHIP is bad at 1.44 as well...In the last 10 games when Kendricks has teken the mound the Rockies are 2-8..That's not very good..His road record is rather bad as well..THis guy serves up homeruns game in and game out..He has given up a total of8 in his last 4 games..He also allowed 15ER as well..He has just 12 strikeouts in his last 20 innings..So it looks to be a rough go here tonight for Kendricks..Now you add in the cold bats for Colorado and i can justify laying this kind of number..Arizona swings the bat well and they have scored a total of 29 runs in 5 games..D-Backs got the offense rolling last night and that should continue here at home..D-Backs are very much in the race for the NL West only sitting 6.5 games back..They can make a push here before the break with a favorable schedule as well..The price is a little hefty, but going against Kenrick has been good this year.

Friday Night MLB Team Total

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS – OVER 4.5 RUNS (-130 @BOL)

My long term clients know that we have been going against Colo SP Kendrick with success this season. He is having one of the worst seasons of any SP in the bigs thus far…..These D-Backs have already smacked him around this season, including once at hitter friendly Chase Field. He’s been prone to giving up the long ball and has had trouble keeping the ball down. Not a great combo when taking the ball at Chase Field and vs a club who will be seeing him for the 3rd time already this season. Obviously several key D-Backs have had success vs him & I fully expect Arizona to get to him eventually and then we get that poor Colorado bullpen. I fully expect these D-Backs to plate at least 5 runs before all the dust settles in this game tonight, and we’ll just see what happens here, as always…..
