Kazmir leads the Atheltics to another under

Under bettors rejoiced in another cashed ticket thanks to Scott Kazmir, with his Oakland Athletics going 1-6-1 over/under in his past eight contests. This comes courtesy of Kazmir pitching two-hit, no-run ball for eight innings Thursday.

In his past eight starts, Kazmir has now only allowed 11 runs.

Kazmir's next projected start comes Wednesday when the A's visit the New York Yankees.

Red Sox continue to bounce back after losing

The Boston Red Sox continue to be a hard team to develop a streak against, with the team now winning their past seven games following a loss. That trend was extended Thursday when the Bo-Sox beat-up the Blue Jays 12-6, on the back of an eight run first inning.

Those seven games have seen the Sox win by a combined 53-21, which is an average scoring margin of +4.6 runs per game.

Boston takes to the diamond again Friday when they start a three-game set with the Houston Astros at Fenway.

GAME: Miami Marlins (34-46) at Chicago Cubs (42-35)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 2:20 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: 156, -169 N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs take some momentum into a 10-game homestand, which begins with the first of three against the Miami Marlins on Friday afternoon. The Cubs permitted just one run during a three-game sweep at the New York Mets – capped by a 6-1 triumph on Thursday – and stand alone in the second wild-card spot in the National League.

Chicago prevailed in the series finale despite a day of rest for rookie phenom Kris Bryant, who has sputtered a bit of late with five hits in 25 at-bats and one RBI in the his last eight contests. The Cubs hope to cool off Miami, which comes in off a three-game home sweep of the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants that ended with Thursday’s 5-4 victory. Marlins slugger Justin Bour has homered in three straight contests while recording seven RBIs while Christian Yelich went 11-for-25 during his team’s nine-game homestand. Miami is just 13-24 on the road, though, including seven losses in its last eight away games.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET; ESPN2, FSN Florida (Miami), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Tom Koehler (6-4, 3.66 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jason Hammel (5-3, 2.92)

Koehler is 4-1 over his last eight starts while allowing two or fewer runs in six of them, including a two-run, seven-inning stint against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a win last Saturday. The Stony Brook product has pitched better at home (4-1, 1.68 ERA) than on the road (2-3, 6.21) in 2015. Starlin Castro is 2-for-7 with a homer and three RBIs versus Koehler, who has yet to register a decision with a 4.76 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) against the Cubs.

Hammel is winless in his last four outings and has completed at least five innings once during that span. The 32-year-old South Carolina native did beat Miami on June 1, yielding one run and five hits with a career-high 11 strikeouts across 6 2/3 innings, and is 2-3 lifetime versus the Marlins with a 4.33 ERA in nine games (seven starts). Hammel has recorded 99 strikeouts (974 in his career) and just 17 walks in 95 2/3 innings this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cubs lead the majors in victories from its bullpen (19) and their relievers boast a 1.60 ERA since May 23.

2. Miami 2B Dee Gordon saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end Thursday, but leads the majors with 114 hits.

3. Chicago’s rookie 2B Addison Russell is 1-for-22 with eight strikeouts over his last seven games.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (42-38) at Washington Nationals (43-36)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 6:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: 143, -155 TOTAL: 7.5

Jake Peavy returns to the rotation for the first time in 2 1/2 months when the San Francisco Giants continue their six-game road trip at the Washington Nationals on Friday night. Peavy will face a difficult task in his first start since April 17, trying to cool off a club that has won nine of 12 overall and six straight games at home.

The Nationals were on a 9-1 tear before dropping their final two games in Atlanta, including a walk-off loss in the ninth inning against ace Max Scherzer on Thursday. Bryce Harper has hit safely in five straight games but has just one RBI in that span for Washington, which was held to one run in each of the last two losses against a pair of rookies who entered the series with a combined two major-league starts. San Francisco had won four of five before getting swept in a three-game series by Miami. Buster Posey homered and drove in a pair of runs in the series finale, giving him three blasts and 15 RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak.

TV: 6:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jake Peavy (0-2, 9.39 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (5-4, 4.41)

Peavy was 6-4 with a 2.17 ERA last season with the Giants after he was acquired from Boston, but he struggled in the World Series and got off to a rocky start this season. The former National League Cy Young winner served up a grand slam in a four-inning stint in his season opener and lasted only 3 2/3 innings in his next outing, allowing four runs on eight hits. Peavy is 4-5 with a 3.87 ERA in 12 appearances versus Washington.

Gonzalez halted a four-start winless drought with a superb outing against Pittsburgh on June 21, tossing seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball to earn the victory. He was unable to build upon that performance after his last start was postponed by rain in the top of the second inning. The 29-year-old is 2-2 with a 2.59 ERA in seven starts versus the Giants and has held the hot-hitting Posey to three singles in 14 at-bats.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants OF Gregor Blanco is 16-for-33 with eight RBIs during a nine-game hitting streak.

2. Nationals CF Denard Span is 6-for-13 over the last four games.

3. Giants 1B Brandon Belt, who has an RBI in three straight games and five of six, is batting .318 with three homers in 12 games versus Washington.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (37-41) at Pittsburgh Pirates (45-33)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: 123, -133 TOTAL: 7.5

The Pittsburgh Pirates own the second-best record in the National League and continue their pursuit of Central Division-leading St. Louis when they host the resurgent Cleveland Indians on Friday in the opener of a three-game interleague series. The Pirates are riding high after a three-game sweep in Detroit and play their next 10 at home, capped by a four-game series against the Cardinals heading into the All-Star break.

Pittsburgh beat the Tigers into submission, scoring 22 runs and amassing a staggering total of 49 hits in the sweep of the Tigers. Second baseman Neil Walker led the charge with a pair of four-hit games, going 10-for-17 with a pair of homers and seven RBIs in the series. The Indians are coming off a four-game sweep at Tampa Bay that was fueled by magnificent pitching. Three of Cleveland's starting pitchers took a perfect game into the sixth inning and the rotation limited the Rays to eight runs on 12 hits over 32 1/3 innings in the series.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (6-5, 3.96 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Charlie Morton (6-1, 4.28)

Bauer lost his second straight start by giving up four runs on five hits - two for home runs - over seven innings in a 4-0 setback at Baltimore on Sunday. The former No. 3 overall draft pick was rocked for seven runs on nine hits in three-plus innings to suffer the loss against Detroit in his previous turn. Bauer has been stellar versus NL foes this season, posting a 2-0 record and 0.82 ERA in three interleague starts.

Morton managed to come away with the victory last time out despite giving up four runs on a season-high 10 hits over six innings versus Atlanta. He was shelled in his previous turn at Washington, permitting nine runs on eight hits in only two-thirds of an inning to suffer his first loss after winning his five starts of the season. The 31-year-old Morton is perfect at PNC Park this season with a 4-0 record and 1.98 ERA in four starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Walker has back-to-back four-hit games to boost his career batting average in July to .339 (150-for-442).

2. Indians 2B Jason Kipnis was 8-for-19 with an RBI in each game versus Tampa Bay to boost his American League-best batting average to .347.

3. Pirates SS Jordy Mercer (16-for-36) and OF Starling Marte (14-for-32) each are riding eight-game hitting streaks.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (42-39) at New York Yankees (42-37)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: -102, -106 TOTAL: 7

The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays sure aren't playing like contenders, although both clubs remain in the thick of the race in the American League East. The division rivals look to put an end to their troubles at the other's expense when they open a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Friday.

New York salvaged the finale of a three-game set against the Los Angeles Angels for just its fourth win in 11 outings. Brett Gardner is on a tear of late, going 18-for-39 (.462) with nine runs scored during his nine-game hitting streak and is 7-for-18 (.389) in his career versus Friday starter Chris Archer. While the Yankees are tied with Baltimore atop the AL East, the Rays find themselves one game back after being swept in a four-game series by Cleveland for their ninth loss in 11 outings. Tampa Bay and New York each could receive a boost to their lineups as James Loney (fractured left finger) and Jacoby Ellsbury (knee) are possible to return following their respective five- and six-week absences.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, Sun Sports (Tampa Bay), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Chris Archer (9-5, 2.31 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (4-3, 3.88)

Archer suffered his first loss since May 7 on Sunday after allowing five runs on as many hits - including a career-high three homers - in six innings of a 5-3 setback to Boston. The 26-year-old sports a 5-0 career mark versus the Yankees with a 2.02 ERA and 0.82 WHIP while limiting the club to a .199 batting average. Archer fared well in his last meeting with New York, but walked away with a no-decision despite yielding two runs on seven hits in as many innings.

Staked to an early six-run lead, Tanaka struggled mightily and allowed a career-high three homers for the second straight start before walking away with a no-decision against Houston on Saturday. The 26-year-old Japanese star looks to rebound versus Tampa Bay, against which he improved to 2-0 in his career after scattering two hits and striking out eight in seven innings of a 9-0 rout on April 18. Asdrubal Cabrera (0-for-6) and Evan Longoria (0-for-5) have yet to find any success in their careers against Tanaka.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York 3B Chase Headley collected three hits in the finale versus Los Angeles after going 2-for-22 in his previous six contests.

2. Tampa Bay, which opens a seven-game road trip on Friday, is 21-12 away from Tropicana Field.

3. Yankees veteran OF Carlos Beltran is considered day-to-day as he nurses a ribcage injury.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (42-39) at Detroit Tigers (39-39)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 7:08 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: 107, -116 TOTAL: 8.5

The Detroit Tigers can drop below .500 for the first time this season when they host the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series. The Tigers' struggles at home continued with a three-game sweep at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who bludgeoned Detroit's pitching staff for 22 runs and 49 hits.

"We're not combining things well," said Detroit manager Brad Ausmus, who was ejected from Thursday's series finale versus the Pirates. "When we're hitting, we're not pitching and when we're pitching, we're not hitting." After ripping off 11 consecutive victories last month to storm back into contention in the American League East, the Blue Jays have leveled off and are 8-9 in their last 17. Toronto, which leads the majors with 441 runs, dropped three of four at home to division rival Boston despite clubbing eight homers in the series. The Blue Jays will send right-hander Drew Hutchison to the mound in search of his ninth victory while the Tigers counter with Anibal Sanchez.

TV: 7:08 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SNET (Toronto), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Drew Hutchison (8-1, 4.99 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (6-7, 4.63)

Hutchison won his third consecutive start and improved to 5-0 in his last seven turns after yielding an unearned run and four hits over 5 2/3 innings against Texas on Sunday. He has built the winning streak despite failing to complete six innings in five of his last six outings, including four in a row. Hutchison pitched seven shutout innings in his only career matchup versus Detroit and is 2-0 away from home, but he has an 8.92 ERA in his eight road starts this season..

Sanchez surrendered three homers but managed to escape with a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox last time out, giving up four runs over seven innings. The 31-year-old Venezuelan won his previous three starts, allowing three runs and 15 hits over 23 2/3 innings. Sanchez permitted only four homers in 21 starts last year, but he has already been taken deep 18 times this year, including five in his last two turns.

WALK-OFFS

1. CF Kevin Pillar is 9-for-16 during a four-game hitting streak for Toronto, which piled up 33 runs in going 5-1 against Detroit last year.

2. Tigers RF J.D. Martinez is in the midst of a torrid stretch with eight homers and 16 RBIs over his last nine games.

3. The Blue Jays have scored at least four runs in an inning 31 times, the most in the majors.

GAME: Houston Astros (47-34) at Boston Red Sox (37-44)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: 113, -122 TOTAL: 9

The Houston Astros blew right past a fellow first-place team this week and own the most wins in the American League. The Astros will try to keep up that intensity when they take a step down and open a three-game series at a last-place team in the host Boston Red Sox on Friday.

Houston swept a three-game series from the Kansas City Royals to push its winning streak to four straight but was dealt quite a blow when slugger George Springer suffered a broken right wrist after being hit by a pitch on Wednesday. "We're going to allow the bone - the particular bone, it's a non-displaced fracture - we're going to allow it heal on its own,” Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told reporters after placing Springer on the 15-day disabled list. “We'll do whatever we can to speed that up, but nature has to take its course, so it’s hard to tell (how long he'll be out).” The Astros could have used Springer to keep up with the Red Sox, who pounded out a season-high 19 hits on Thursday to polish off a series win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Boston will send Justin Masterson to the mound on Friday while Houston will give Dan Straily a chance to win a regular rotation spot.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Southwest (Houston), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Dan Straily (2014: 1-3, 6.75 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Justin Masterson (3-2, 5.58)

Straily was recalled to take over the rotation spot of recently demoted left-hander Brett Oberholtzer and is making his debut for Houston after appearing in the majors with Oakland and the Chicago Cubs in previous seasons. Straily was 6-6 with a 4.06 ERA for Triple-A Fresno this campaign. The 26-year-old went 10-8 with a 3.96 ERA in his last full season as a starter for Oakland in 2013.

Masterson returned to the major-league rotation for the first time in more than a month on Sunday and allowed only an unearned run on five hits over five innings to earn a win at Tampa Bay. Most encouraging for the sinkerball specialist was six strikeouts without walking a batter. Masterson is making his first career start against the Astros and is 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA in four home starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros recalled OF Alex Presley to take over Springer’s roster spot.

2. Boston OF Alejandro De Aza tripled in three of the last four games and has hit safely in eight straight.

3. Houston 2B Jose Altuve has hit safely in 10 consecutive games and driven in a run in three in a row.

Preview: Brewers at Reds

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (33-48) at Cincinnati Reds (36-41)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: -113, 104 TOTAL: 8.5

The Cincinnati Reds and the Milwaukee Brewers figure to have plenty of attention from opposing teams as they kick off a three-game series in Cincinnati on Friday. The Reds and the Brewers are expected to be big sellers at the upcoming trade deadline and are showcasing all available assets over the next four weeks.

Cincinnati is not playing like a seller of late and squeezed out a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday to pick up its fourth win in the last five series. The home crowd offered Johnny Cueto, who is thought to be on his way out of town, a standing ovation when he left the mound. Milwaukee is enjoying a strong run as well and picked up its fifth straight win by outlasting Philadelphia 8-7 in 11 innings on Thursday. The Brewers will send Mike Fiers to the mound on Friday to oppose Reds rookie Michael Lorenzen.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Mike Fiers (3-7, 4.14 ERA) vs. Reds RH Michael Lorenzen (3-2, 3.38)

Fiers’ relatively small salary makes him a player Milwaukee would like to keep, but several teams would be interested should a pitcher with two earned runs or fewer allowed in 11 of his last 15 starts. The Florida native held the Minnesota Twins to one run and four hits on Sunday but did not factor in the decision. One of Fiers’ few bad outings came against Cincinnati on April 21, when he was ripped for a season-high eight runs (four earned) in four innings.

Lorenzen is trying to make himself a part of the future with the Reds and is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his last three starts. The 23-year-old gets in trouble with walks from time to time and issued four in 5 2/3 innings at the New York Mets on Saturday. Lorenzen made his major-league debut against Milwaukee on April 29 and absorbed the loss while yielding three runs on three solo homers in five innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Reds captured one of the big prizes on the international free-agent market when they agreed to terms with OF Cristian Olivo.

2. Milwaukee C Jonathan Lucroy is 8-for-15 with five runs scored in his last three games.

3. Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto is 2-for-20 over his last six games.

Julio Teheran won 14 games to help the Atlanta Braves win the National League East two years ago, and he followed up with 14 victories last season. But as the Braves host the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday looking to stay close in the East, they desperately need Teheran to resemble a top-of-the-rotation starter and not the inconsistent pitcher they have seen far too often in 2015.

The 24-year-old Teheran surrendered four runs or more in four of his past five starts and arguably has been the Braves’ least-effective starter the past month. Philadelphia knows about starting rotation struggles, having seen its starters pitch fewer than six innings 13 times in the past 16 games while posting a 7.70 ERA. One bright spot for the Phillies is third baseman Maikel Franco, who was named the NL’s Rookie of the Month after hitting .391 in June with eight homers. The Phillies have lost seven of eight after being swept in a four-game set with Milwaukee, while the Braves won the final two games of a three-game series against Washington to pull within five games of the division lead.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies LH Adam Morgan (1-0, 1.59 ERA) vs. Braves RH Julio Teheran (5-4, 4.94)

Morgan tries again to make his second major-league start after Saturday’s outing against Washington was rained out after two innings. Morgan, who gave up three hits in two innings in the postponed contest, won his debut June 21, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings against St. Louis. A third-round pick in the 2011 draft, Morgan lost all six of his decisions at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season with a 4.74 ERA.

Teheran’s past three outings illustrate his up-and-down season: six runs on 13 hits against Boston on June 16, followed by seven shutout innings of one-hit ball against Miami five days later, then six runs on nine hits allowed in six innings Saturday at Pittsburgh. Since a 3-1 start, Teheran is 2-3 with a 5.55 ERA in his past 10 outings. He is 3-3 in eight career games against the Phillies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia INF Cesar Hernandez has hit safely in his past seven games and is batting .426 (20-47) in his past 11 contests.

2. Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman told reporters Thursday he does not expect to return from a sprained right wrist until after the All-Star break.

3. The Braves have scored 28 runs in 13 games since Freeman was injured, scoring two runs or fewer eight times in the past 10 games.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (41-38) at Texas Rangers (41-39)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: -138, 127 TOTAL: 8.5

The Los Angeles Angels are going through some turmoil in the front office but are trending in the right direction on the field. The Angels try for their fifth win in six games when they kick off a nine-game road trip that will take them through the All-Star break at the Texas Rangers on Friday.

The Angels are winning of late thanks to their pitching staff while they wait for the offense to come around. Los Angeles pitchers have allowed a total of 13 runs in the last seven games while the offense failed to score more than four in any of the last 11 games. The Rangers are coming on strong as well and grabbed a 2-0 win at Baltimore on Thursday to close out a 4-3 road trip and pull two games above .500 at 41-39. Texas right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez will try to end a four-start winless streak on Friday while the Angels counter with Garret Richards.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Garrett Richards (8-5, 3.54 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Chi Chi Gonzalez (2-3, 2.59)

Richards is enjoying a run of four straight quality starts and is 3-1 in that span. The Oklahoma product allowed two runs and seven hits over 7 2/3 innings while striking out six to earn a win over Seattle on Saturday. Richards earned a win over Texas on Apr. 24 and is 7-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 15 career games – 11 starts – against the division rivals.

Gonzalez did not allow more than two earned runs in any of his first four starts but ran into some trouble over the last two. The 23-year-old rookie was hammered for eight runs against Oakland on June 23 and suffered the loss at Toronto on Sunday while allowing three runs in six frames. Gonzalez walked four against the Blue Jays and has 17 walks and 14 strikeouts on the season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels brought back former GM Bill Stoneman to take over the position on an interim basis.

2. Texas reinstated RHP Neftali Feliz (right side) from the 15-day DL and optioned RHP Nick Martinez to Triple-A on Thursday.

3. Los Angeles 1B Albert Pujols, who was named the AL Player of the Month for June, is 3-for-25 over his last seven games.

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (42-37) at Chicago White Sox (34-42)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: -142, 131 TOTAL: 9

The Chicago White Sox look to carry the momentum of sweeping baseball's best team into Friday's opener of a three-game series against the visiting Baltimore Orioles. The American League Central cellar-dwelling White Sox brushed aside St. Louis in an abbreviated two-game interleague set to improve to 6-4 in their last 10 contests.

Tyler Flowers has homered in three straight outings and is 7-for-19 (.368) with five RBIs and four runs scored during his four-game hitting streak. Flowers has enjoyed success versus Friday starter Ubaldo Jimenez, going 4-for-14 (.286) with three doubles in his career. Baltimore dropped three of four to Texas to fall into a first-place tie with the New York Yankees in the AL East. Chris Davis saw his 11-game hitting streak come to an end in a 2-0 setback to the Rangers in the series finale, but is just 2-for-14 (.143) in his career versus Friday starter John Danks.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (7-3, 3.09 ERA) vs. White Sox LH John Danks (3-8, 5.38 ERA)

Jimenez won his fourth straight start on Sunday after scattering four hits and striking out seven en route to a 4-0 victory over Cleveland. The 31-year-old Dominican did not walk a batter against his former team after issuing 11 free passes in his previous four outings. Jimenez improved to 3-3 in his career versus the White Sox after allowing two runs (none earned) in seven solid innings of an 8-2 victory on April 29.

While Jimenez is on the upswing, Danks continued his difficult season by getting shelled on June 22 to suffer his fourth straight setback. The 30-year-old was blitzed for nine runs on as many hits - including three homers - en route to a 13-2 loss to Minnesota. Danks has split 10 career decisions versus Baltimore, but picked up the loss in his last meeting after permitting four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago 1B Jose Abreu has hit safely in four straight contests and 12 of his last 14.

2. The White Sox and Orioles saw their three-game series shrink to just one contest in late April due to the riots in Baltimore.

3. The Orioles signed former two-time All-Star closer Chris Perez to a minor-league deal on Thursday, according to multiple reports.

GAME: Minnesota Twins (42-37) at Kansas City Royals (44-32)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: 135, -146 TOTAL: 8

The slumping Kansas City Royals hope to halt a four-game losing streak when they meet the visiting Minnesota Twins in Friday's second contest of a four-game series. Kansas City has scored six runs during its slump and Thursday's 2-0 loss to the Twins was its second shutout defeat in three games.

Second-place Minnesota moved within 3 1/2 games of the American League Central-leading Royals and stands at 3-4 on a 10-game road trip. Closer Glen Perkins finished up for Kyle Gibson in the opener to convert his 26th consecutive save opportunity this season and his 114 career saves are two behind third-place Eddie Guardado on the Twins' all-time list. Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer (finger) was back in the lineup after a three-game absence and had one of his club's four hits. Among the slumping Royals are third baseman Mike Moustakas (2-for-22 over his last six games) and left fielder Alex Gordon (2-for-20 over six games).

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins LH Tommy Milone (4-1, 3.19 ERA) vs. Royals RH Jeremy Guthrie (6-5, 5.68 ERA)

Milone received a no-decision against Milwaukee in his last turn despite allowing just two hits over six scoreless innings. He gave up two or fewer earned runs in each of his five June starts and posted a 2.03 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. Milone is 1-0 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts against Kansas City this season and his career mark is 4-2 with a 4.21 ERA in eight outings.

Guthrie defeated Oakland in his last turn when he gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings. He is 9-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 17 career appearances (15 starts) against Minnesota and struggles against first baseman Joe Mauer (9-for-26, three homers). Guthrie issued a season-worst six walks and allowed three runs and six hits in five innings while losing to the Twins on April 22.

WALK-OFFS

1. Highly touted 3B/DH Miguel Sano made his Twins' debut in the opener and went 1-for-4.

2. Kansas City C Salvador Perez is in a 4-for-31 funk over his last eight contests.

3. CF Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in the opener after going 2-for-17 over his previous six games.

GAME: San Diego Padres (38-43) at St. Louis Cardinals (51-27)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: 154, -167 TOTAL: 7

After running roughshod over their opponents at Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Cardinals look to snap a three-game home losing skid on Friday when they continue their four-game series against the San Diego Padres. St. Louis, which dropped a 5-3 decision in 11 innings on Thursday, has mustered just five runs during its skid after outscoring its foes by a 30-9 margin while winning six in a row.

San Diego also struggled to score runs of late, getting shut out on back-to-back occasions before its eruption in the opener of a 10-game trek ended a three-game losing skid. Will Venable, who was mired in a 2-for-16 stretch in his previous six contests, provided the big blow by belting a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the 11th inning. Venable's performance spoiled yet another solid effort by Jason Heyward, who recorded his seventh multi-hit performance in his last 14 contests and is 8-for-20 with three runs scored during his five-game hitting streak. The Cardinals look to prevent a season-high losing skid on Friday while also denying the Padres from joining the Chicago White Sox and Detroit as the lone teams to win back-to-back games at Busch Stadium this season.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Andrew Cashner (3-9, 4.22 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (10-3, 2.77)

Cashner posted his first victory in exactly one month on Saturday when he allowed two runs and struck out six in seven innings of a 7-2 victory over Arizona. The 28-year-old has kept the ball in the park in his last two outings after failing to do so in each of his previous five trips to the mound. Cashner has faced St. Louis on six occasions, although he recorded his lone decision in a loss after yielding two runs on as many hits in two-thirds of an inning in relief.

Wacha has alternated wins and losses in each of his last seven outings, emerging on the positive side after permitting one run on six hits in as many innings of an 8-1 triumph over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The 24-year-old has eclipsed the sum total in victories of his previous two seasons with his 10-win performance in 2015. Wacha, who has yet to face San Diego in his young career, has struck out 27 batters against five walks in his last four outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis SS Jhonny Peralta has collected three multi-hit performances in his last four contests.

2. San Diego OF Melvin Upton Jr. recorded two hits in the series opener after going 1-for-12 in his previous eight games.

3. Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter had two hits in the series opener and is 24-for-61 (.393) with 14 RBIs in his career versus the Padres.

GAME: Seattle Mariners (36-43) at Oakland Athletics (37-45)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 9:05 PM EST
WHERE: O.co Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: 143, -155 TOTAL: 7.5

The Oakland Athletics have the opportunity to move out of the American League West cellar when they host the Seattle Mariners in Friday's second contest of a four-game series. Oakland posted a 4-0 victory in the opener to move within a half-game of fourth-place Seattle and can trade spots with the Mariners with another victory.

Oakland has won three of its past four games and has allowed just four runs during the stretch. The Athletics had lost five consecutive games to Seattle before getting eight scoreless innings from Scott Kazmir on Thursday en route to ending the Mariners' modest two-game winning streak. Left fielder Franklin Gutierrez had both Seattle hits Thursday and is 4-for-14 since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. Gutierrez is in the majors for the first time since 2013 after battling a severe stomach illness.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Seattle), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH J.A. Happ (3-5, 3.89 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Jesse Chavez (4-7, 3.02)

Happ has lost four consecutive starts and has a 5.75 ERA during the stretch. He is winless in his past nine outings with his last victory coming against Oakland on May 9 when he struck out eight and gave up one run and four hits in five innings. Happ is 2-0 with a 2.43 ERA in six career appearances (four starts) against the Athletics.

Chavez had a two-start winning streak snapped in his last outing when he gave up three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings against Kansas City. He has allowed eight runs and 14 hits in 10 2/3 innings over his last two turns. Chavez lost to Seattle on May 10 when he gave up four runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners 3B Kyle Seager is 5-for-35 with one homer and one RBI over his last 10 games.

2. Oakland 2B/LF Ben Zobrist is 5-for-9 with three walks and three runs scored over the past three games.

3. Seattle recalled SS Chris Taylor - who went 0-for-2 in the opener - from Triple-A Tacoma and designated INF Willie Bloomquist for assignment.

GAME: Colorado Rockies (34-45) at Arizona Diamondbacks (38-41)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 9:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: 152, -165 TOTAL: 9

The Arizona Diamondbacks tentatively ended a tailspin and look to make it consecutive victories over Colorado when they host the Rockies in Friday's second contest of a four-game set. Arizona had lost five of seven games before racking up five extra-base hits while recording an 8-1 win in the series opener.

Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock homered among two hits and has gone 5-for-9 over the last two games after enduring a 3-for-25 slump over the previous seven contests. Arizona third baseman Aaron Hill has two RBIs in each of the past two games and is 8-for-17 with four doubles against scheduled Colorado starter Kyle Kendrick. Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki stretched his hitting streak to 15 games in the opener and has reached base in each of his last 30 appearances. Colorado has lost five of its last six games and has scored only five runs over the last four games.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Kyle Kendrick (3-10, 6.07 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Chase Anderson (4-2, 3.66)

Kendrick has lost three of his last four starts and served up eight homers during the stretch. He has been touched up for 23 homers - most in the majors - and is nearing his career worst of 26 from 2010 when he was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. Kendrick defeated Arizona on June 23 when he gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings, is 1-1 with a 10.45 ERA in two 2015 outings against the Diamondbacks and is 2-3 with a 6.31 ERA in 11 career appearances (10 starts).

Anderson has won three of his last four starts with the loss coming when he was shelled by the Rockies. He allowed eight runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings in the outing against Colorado and has served up six homers over his last two outings. Anderson is 0-2 with an 11.70 ERA in two 2015 starts against the Rockies, is 3-3 with a 6.00 ERA in six career outings and has struggled to retire Colorado catcher Wilin Rosario (6-for-8, one homer).

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 on Thursday to raise his major league-leading average to .352 and is 16-for-38 with two homers and nine RBIs against Colorado this season.

2. Colorado CF Charlie Blackmon is 2-for-16 over his last five games.

3. Arizona 3B/OF Yasmany Tomas had two RBIs in the opener and is 12-for-30 with 10 RBIs against the Rockies this season.

Preview: Mets at Dodgers

GAME: New York Mets (40-40) at Los Angeles Dodgers (45-35)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 03 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: 245, -270 TOTAL: 5.5

The New York Mets finally scored a run on Thursday to put an end to their recent offensive ineptitude, but could find it hard to repeat that meager output as they travel across the country to square off against a three-time National League Cy Young Award winner that has dominated them. Clayton Kershaw looks to end the first three-game losing streak of his eight-year career on Friday as the Los Angeles Dodgers begin a 10-game homestand against the Mets.

New York entered a three-game home set with Chicago on a four-game winning streak after completing a sweep of Cincinnati with a 7-2 victory on Sunday, but the offense was nowhere to be found against the Cubs. The Mets received a third-inning RBI double from Curtis Granderson to end 22 2/3-inning scoreless streak in the series finale, but that was all that could muster in a 6-1 defeat – the 12th time in the last 14 games they have scored two or fewer runs. The Dodgers wrapped up a 6-4 road trip on Wednesday, taking the rubber match of a three-game set in Arizona for their sixth win in eight tries. Los Angeles has won 13 of the last 16 meetings, including four of six last season.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, SNY (New York), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (3-4, 3.59 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (5-6, 3.20)

Syndergaard enjoyed arguably the finest performance of his rookie season last Friday, allowing one run on five hits while only requiring 89 pitches over a career-high eight frames in a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati. The win halted a four-game winless stretch for the 22-year-old Texan, who is 0-3 with a 6.52 ERA in four road turns (as opposed to 3-1, 1.89 in five home outings). Syndergaard will be making his 10th career start and first against the Dodgers.

Kershaw continued to go mostly unrewarded for his solid efforts on Saturday after he was charged with three runs (one earned) and struck out nine over seven innings during a 3-2 defeat at Miami. The reigning NL MVP, who has received three runs of support or fewer in nine of 16 outings this year, went 2-3 in June despite sporting a 2.16 ERA and fanning 57 across 41 2/3 innings. Kershaw has dominated the Mets over his career, however, going 5-0 with a 1.62 ERA in seven starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Los Angeles 1B Adrian Gonzalez, who hit .248 in June, is batting .391 with four homers, six doubles and 18 RBIs in his last 16 games versus New York.

2. Mets LF Michael Cuddyer has missed the last two contests and is questionable for Friday after receiving an MRI and two injections for a sore left knee.

3. Dodgers 2B Howie Kendrick is 14-for-28 with eight RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak while SS Jimmy Rollins, who is batting a career-low .212, is 13-for-44 over his last 11 contests.
