Preview: Mariners at Red Sox

GAME: Seattle Mariners (35-31) at Boston Red Sox (37-28)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Boston Red Sox left-hander Roenis Elias is poised to make his first start of the season, and it will come against the team that traded him away in the offseason. After spending his first two campaigns in Seattle, Elias will be on the mound when the Red Sox host the Mariners on Friday in the opener of a three-game series.

Elias posted a 15-20 record over two seasons with Seattle, but he was shipped to Boston along with reliever Carson Smith in exchange for southpaw Wade Miley. "It's going to be a good experience, an interesting one," the 27-year-old Cuban acknowledged. "I'm looking forward to seeing my old teammates, (particularly) Robinson Cano." While the Red Sox lost two of three in Baltimore to fall into second place in the American League East, Seattle halted a four-game skid with a 6-4 win at Tampa Bay on Thursday to avoid a sweep on the opening leg of its 10-game road trip. Dae-Ho Lee, who struck out six times in seven at-bats in his previous two games, broke out of his funk with a pair of hits and three RBIs to lift the Mariners to their fourth victory in 13 contests.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Seattle), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Hisashi Iwakuma (5-5, 4.10 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Roenis Elías (0-0, 16.20)

Iwakuma surrendered three home runs for the second time in three starts but limited them to the solo variety and earned the win with seven innings of three-run ball against Texas in his last outing. Iwakuma is 4-1 over his last five turns despite permitting eight blasts in that span and has pitched at least six frames in his last six outings. He is 0-1 with a wretched 10.20 ERA in four career starts versus Boston and has been hit hard by slugger David Ortiz (4-for-8, 2 homers).

Elias lost the spring-training competition for the No. 5 spot in the rotation to knuckleballer Steven Wright and got off to a rocky start at Triple-A Pawtucket, posting an 0-3 record and 5.76 ERA in his first five starts. He has turned things around in his last five turns, permitting a total of eight runs over a span of 36 innings. Elias has limited left-handed hitters to a collective .224 batting average in his career, a big reason why he earned the nod versus Seattle.

WALK-OFFS

1. Ortiz is 10-for-26 over his last six games, recording three doubles in that span to boost his major league-leading total to 29.

2. Cano is 15-for-41 over his last nine contests.

3. Red Sox LF Chris Young sat out Thursday's game due to tightness in his quadriceps.

GAME: Chicago White Sox (33-33) at Cleveland Indians (35-30)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago White Sox are starting to show signs of life and have an opportunity to gain ground in the American League Central when they kick off a seven-game road trip with three against the Cleveland Indians beginning Friday. Chicago (33-33) lost 14 of 18 before taking two of three from Detroit earlier this week as rookie shortstop Tim Anderson provided a lift since being moved to the lead-off spot in the order by going 6-for-16 against Detroit.

"He does a lot of things well,'' manager Robin Ventura said of Anderson, who is batting .320 after his first six big league games. "He has speed that goes with it. Some of the plays he's been making defensively is some of what we want to see. Offensively, he's very aggressive and makes hard contact. Speed-wise, that's the best part." Cleveland (35-30) saw their lead in the AL Central shrink to one-half game over Kansas City after the Royals engineered a three-game sweep and sent the Indians home after a 4-6 road trip. "We didn't play very well. I think that's on me," Indians manager Terry Francona told reporters. "They weren't prepared to play (Wednesday), and I guarantee you that'll change." Cleveland's Trevor Bauer is 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA in three June turns and opposes Jose Quintana, who has dropped six straight starts - including one to the Indians - as Chicago scored only eight runs during his losing streak.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Jose Quintana (5-7, 2.66 ERA) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (4-2, 3.69)

Quintana allowed three runs - all solo homers - and six hits while matching a season high with 10 strikeouts in a 4-1 loss to Kansas City on Saturday. The 27-year-old Colombian hasn't won since prevailing for a fourth straight outing May 8 despite posting four quality starts since. The heart of Cleveland's order - Jason Kipnis, Francisco Lindor, Mike Napoli and Carlos Santana - is batting a combined .241 in 79 at-bats against Quintana, who is 5-2 with a 2.71 ERA in 15 games (13 starts) versus Cleveland after a 4-3 loss May 25 in which he struck out eight in six innings.

Bauer received a no-decision after yielding three runs (two earned) and nine hits in eight innings of the Indians' 4-3 loss at Angels Stadium on Saturday. It was the fourth straight quality start for the 25-year-old Californian, who is 3-2 with a 3.47 ERA in nine starts since joining the rotation April 30. Alex Avila is 6-for-11 and Jose Abreu 8-for-20 versus Bauer, who is 3-1 with a 3.30 ERA in nine games (seven starts) against Chicago after pitching two scoreless innings of relief in the Indians' 7-1 victory April 8.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cleveland was 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position in the Kansas City series and scored three runs or fewer six times during the 10-game road trip.

2. White Sox RF Adam Eaton went 8-for-14 with four runs scored in the Detroit series after moving from the leadoff spot to No. 2 in the order.

3. Indians 3B Juan Uribe has missed the last three games because of a testicular contusion, but took grounders Wednesday.

Preview: Giants at Rays

GAME: San Francisco Giants (41-26) at Tampa Bay Rays (31-33)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The National League West-leading San Francisco Giants look to stay hot when they begin a seven-game road trip with the first of three against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. Buster Posey went 8-for-12 with three RBIs as the Giants (41-26) swept three contests from Milwaukee earlier in the week to push their winning streak to five and improve to a season-best 15 games over .500.

Jeff Samardzija goes to the mound for San Francisco with an unimpressive 2-8 record and 5.46 ERA in interleague play, but can become the team’s third eight-game winner on Friday. Right-hander Chris Archer gets the start for the Rays, who have won nine of their last 12 contests despite a 6-4 loss to Seattle on Thursday. Tampa Bay’s red-hot third baseman Evan Longoria (seven homers, 14 RBIs his last 11 games) missed Thursday’s contest with left forearm tightness and is considered day-to-day. The game will be a sellout (approximately 40,000) for the Rays after they offered $5 tickets for any available seat Tuesday with all proceeds going to benefit the Pulse Victims Fund, which helps those affected by the mass shooting in Orlando on Sunday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (7-4, 3.36 ERA) vs. Rays RH Chris Archer (4-8, 4.61)

Samardzija is winless in his last three starts and did not complete more than five innings in any of them after winning six of his previous seven. The 31-year-old Notre Dame product has yielded 20 earned runs in 22 2/3 innings over his last four interleague starts. Logan Morrison is 4-for-14 versus Samardzija, who has yet to record a decision with a 3.21 ERA in two career starts against Tampa Bay.

Archer continues to struggle finding his 2015 All-Star form as he has dropped four of the last five decisions after winning three in a row. The North Carolina native is just 1-4 at home, but owns a 2.33 ERA at Tropicana Field this season as opposed to 3-4 with a 6.75 mark on the road. Brandon Belt is 3-for-3 with a homer versus Archer, who lost his only outing against the Giants.

WALK-OFFS

1. Belt (ankle) sat out Wednesday’s contest, but could return to the lineup Friday while boasting an eight-game hitting streak.

2. Tampa Bay RF Steven Souza Jr. (left hip strain) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday and RHP Ryan Garton was optioned to Triple-A Durham.

3. San Francisco 2B Joe Panik is 12-for-28 during a seven-game hitting streak, raising his average from .246 to .268 after notching three singles Wednesday.

GAME: Atlanta Braves (20-46) at New York Mets (36-29)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Curtis Granderson has been hitting at a favorable clip and the New York Mets have begun to follow suit. Granderson carries a seven-game hitting streak into Friday's opener of a three-game series versus the visiting Atlanta Braves, against whom the Mets have won five of the first six meetings between the National League East rivals this season.

The 35-year-old Granderson went deep in Thursday's 6-4 victory by the Mets, who erupted for 17 runs and 30 hits - including five homers - to take the final two contests of their three-game series with Pittsburgh. The offensive explosion has been a welcome sight for the Mets, who were limited to 22 runs in their previous nine contests. New York has outscored Atlanta by a 29-11 margin this season, with Asdrubal Cabrera leading the way by going 9-for-23 with two homers, four RBIs and as many runs scored in the six games. Freddie Freeman went 10-for-18 with three homers, six RBIs and as many run scored as Atlanta salvaged a split of its four-game series with Cincinnati.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH John Gant (0-1, 5.63 ERA) vs. Mets RH Matt Harvey (4-8, 4.66)

Gant will make his first start against the team that selected him in the 21st round of the 2011 draft. The 23-year-old received mixed reviews in his first outing of the season against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, allowing three runs and four hits - although the four walks he issued drove up his pitch count. Gant has struggled versus left-handed batters, who are 12-for-33 with five extra-base hits against him.

Harvey turned in his third consecutive strong outing on Friday but settled for a no-decision despite allowing one run and two hits in six innings at Milwaukee. The 27-year-old has permitted just two runs and eight hits in his last 20 frames while striking out 17, but he only has a 1-1 record to show for it. Harvey has split a pair of decisions versus Atlanta this season, allowing two runs in five innings of a 6-3 win on April 22 before taking the loss two weeks later after yielding three in 5 2/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York placed OF Juan Lagares on the disabled list with a left thumb injury just prior to Thursday's tilt.

2. The Braves turned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday and recalled RHP Tyrell Jenkins, who was the organization's Pitcher of the Year in 2015.

3. Mets 3B David Wright underwent neck surgery on Thursday to repair the herniated disk that has sidelined him since last month.

GAME: Colorado Rockies (32-33) at Miami Marlins (34-32)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Colorado Rockies do not appear ready to contend for a division title, but are at least gaining relevancy as they kick off a six-game road trip with four contests against the Miami Marlins beginning Friday. Manager Walt Weiss had a simple explanation for his club's resurgence -- "um, pitching," when asked by the Denver Post -- despite the Rockies owning the third-worst ERA in the majors at 4.88, including the highest in baseball at home (6.19) and sixth-best on the road (3.63).

“We are clicking on all cylinders right now, so it’s nice to have that,” right-hander Chad Bettis told reporters after Colorado (32-33) completed a 5-1 homestand with a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday to remain eight games behind San Francisco in the National League West. “Our best baseball is still in front of us, and I think a lot of it has to do with how we’ve been pitching lately. It’s a beautiful thing to see, and we have to keep going.” Colorado's Jon Gray is beginning to realize the potential that made him the No. 3 pick in the 2013 draft and Friday he opposes Adam Conley, who is 0-2 in his last five starts and hasn't won since May 16. Conley takes the place of Jose Fernandez, who is being skipped one start as part of the plan to keep his innings down. Miami (34-32) is coming off a 4-5 road trip as the slumping Giancarlo Stanton (.193, 12 home runs, 29 RBIs) went 4-for-29 with 12 strikeouts and two RBIs in the eight contests he played.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jon Gray (4-2, 4.70 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Adam Conley (3-4, 4.13)

Gray recorded a no-decision after allowing three runs (one earned) and four hits while striking out seven in seven innings of Colorado's 7-5 loss to San Diego on Friday. The 24-year-old Oklahoma native is 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA over his last four turns - all quality starts - with 29 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings. Gray, who is 2-2 with a 4.40 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in five road starts compared to 2-0, 5.02, 1.26 in five home outings, has never faced Miami or any of its players.

Conley yielded six runs (five earned) and a career-high 11 hits in five innings of a 6-0 loss in Arizona on Sunday after permitting three runs in 12 2/3 innings over a pair of no-decisions in his previous two turns - both quality starts. The 26-year-old Washington native was 3-2 with a 3.40 ERA over his first eight appearances. Conley, who is 1-3 with a 4.61 ERA in five home starts, has never faced the Rockies or any of their players.

WALK-OFFS

1. Marlins RF Ichiro Suzuki needs 21 hits to become the 30th player in major league history to reach 3,000.

2. Colorado 3B Nolan Arenado (.290) leads the NL with 20 home runs and 57 RBIs, and the majors at his position with a .995 fielding percentage.

3. Miami 3B Martin Prado (team-best .331) is 18-for-38 with a home run, five RBIs and seven runs scored during a nine-game hitting streak.

GAME: New York Yankees (32-34) at Minnesota Twins (20-46)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Visiting the worst team in the American League provided the perfect tonic for the New York Yankees, who snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday in the opener of their four-game set. New York looks to make it two in a row over the Twins when it sends Masahiro Tanaka to the mound on Friday.

Tanaka has won both career starts against Minnesota, logging a 2.40 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 15 innings. New York's Didi Gregorius clubbed a tiebreaking three-run homer Thursday and is 6-for-11 with a pair of blasts and seven RBIs in his last three games. Minnesota has dropped three straight contests and six of its last eight to tie Atlanta for the worst record in the majors at 20-46. Byung Ho Park and Byron Buxton continue to flail away in the clutch for the Twins, combining to go 7-for-73 with runners in scoring position.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (3-2, 3.08 ERA) vs. Twins LH Pat Dean (1-2, 4.17)

Tanaka was victimized by the long ball in a loss to Detroit on Saturday, allowing a pair of blasts and five runs over 6 1/3 innings to remain winless in his last three starts. He had to settle for a no-decision versus the Los Angeles Angels on June 6 despite working seven frames of two-run ball and was a hard-luck loser at Toronto with one unearned run allowed in six innings. Tanaka has been outstanding on the road this season, posting a 2-1 record and 1.36 ERA in six starts.

Dean is coming off one of the best performances of his brief major-league career, limiting Boston's heavy-hitting lineup to one run and three hits over 6 1/3 innings, although he did walk four batters. He lasted only 4 1/3 frames in his previous turn and was knocked around for four runs and seven hits by Miami in another no-decision. He is winless in four appearances (three starts) at home but is holding opponents to a .236 batting average.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins LHP Fernando Abad has allowed 10-of-27 inherited runners to score.

2. Yankees 3B Chase Headley has hit safely in five straight games.

3. Minnesota closer Glen Perkins will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, the team announced Thursday.

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (26-41) at Houston Astros (32-35)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After ending a long road trip on a positive note, the Houston Astros look to pick on some lesser opponents when they begin a six-game homestand against Cincinnati on Friday. The Astros went 4-5 on their voyage but won the last two in St. Louis, riding George Springer's tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning to a 4-1 victory on Wednesday.

Houston has won eight of its last nine at home and six of nine against National League opponents, and it will hope to take advantage of the struggling Reds and then the division rival Los Angeles Angels, who have dropped seven of 10, later on the homestand. Cincinnati is ripe for the picking, having dropped the final two games of a four-game set at lowly Atlanta, including a 13-inning affair Wednesday and then a 7-2 setback in the series finale Thursday afternoon. That left the Reds an NL-worst 9-22 on the road. Cincinnati has taken 10 of the last 12 meetings at Minute Maid Park, but the last one came late in 2013, when the Astros were finishing up a franchise-worst 51-111 season.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds LH John Lamb (1-4, 5.14 ERA) vs. Astros RH Lance McCullers (3-2, 4.54)

Lamb fell to 2-9 in 18 career starts after giving up four runs and seven hits in four innings of a loss to Oakland on Sunday. The California native struck out one while serving up two home runs for the third time in his last five starts. The 25-year-old Lamb, who has never faced the Astros, has allowed 14 runs and 23 hits in 14 2/3 innings on the road, although he shined through seven innings at Coors Field earlier this month.

McCullers is showing signs of putting things together, posting a 3.72 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 29 innings over his last five starts, but he continues to struggle early in games. "Same script," he told reporters after giving up four runs through the first two innings in an eventual 4-3 loss at Tampa Bay on Friday. "Every time I get hurt it's in the first inning or the second inning." The 22-year-old, who will be making his debut against the Reds, has allowed 16 runs through the first three frames and just one from the fourth inning on through six starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds LF Adam Duvall on Friday slugged his 19th homer and his 12th since May 22.

2. Houston has been held to five runs or fewer in 10 consecutive games while holding opponents to five or fewer in eight straight.

3. Springer was 5-for-38 on the trip and is hitting .194 in June.

GAME: Texas Rangers (42-25) at St. Louis Cardinals (35-30)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The St. Louis Cardinals were riding high with a sizzling offense en route to winning seven of eight contests before their bats were cooled considerably against one Lone Star State representative. The host Cardinals look to get back on track versus the other on Friday when they open a three-game interleague series versus the red-hot Texas Rangers.

St. Louis slugged its way to 58 runs in wins over San Francisco, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh being outscored 9-3 to drop both contests of an abbreviated two-game interleague set versus Houston. Yadier Molina recorded his third three-hit performance in six outings and scored the Cardinals' lone run in a 4-1 setback to the Astros on Wednesday. The 33-year-old Molina has struggled in five meetings with American League West-leading Texas, going 2-for-19 in his career, while his performance versus veteran Cole Hamels isn't much better (6-for-25). The Rangers seized their franchise high-tying eighth consecutive series victory by winning three of four versus Oakland and 20 of 26 overall heading into the last leg of their 10-game road trip.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (6-1, 3.14 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (2-6, 4.91)

Hamels has made himself at home on the road, posting a 4-0 mark with a 1.94 ERA in six starts this season. The 32-year-old continued that success on Sunday after allowing one run on four hits in seven innings of a 6-4 triumph versus Seattle. Hamels' lone blemish was a blast by Leonys Martin, which served as his 11th homer surrendered in his last seven games after yielding four in his previous six contests.

Wacha's winless stretch extended to nine outings on Friday as the 24-year-old settled for his second straight no-decision despite allowing two runs on three hits in seven innings versus Pittsburgh. The strong outing hasn't been a familiar sight for the former Texas A&M star, who has lost a career-worst six consecutive decisions since April 28 and has permitted at least four runs on five occasions during his winless run. Ian Desmond went deep in Thursday's 5-1 win over the Athletics and has six hits in his last three games, but is just 1-for-9 with four strikeouts versus Wacha.

WALK-OFFS

1. Texas 3B Adrian Beltre, who had two singles and a double on Thursday, has hit safely in four straight games and 12 of his last 14 overall.

2. Second-place St. Louis hasn't done itself any favors at Busch Stadium, limping to a 15-18 mark this season.

3. The Rangers have erupted for 11 homers in their last four contests.

GAME: Detroit Tigers (34-32) at Kansas City Royals (35-31)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Rookie Michael Fulmer looks to win his seventh straight decision and extend his impressive scoreless streak when his Detroit Tigers visit the Kansas City Royals on Friday for the second contest of their four-game series. The right-hander has pitched 28 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, just shy of the franchise's rookie record of 28 2/3 set in 1967 by John Hiller.

Fulmer has allowed just nine hits over his last four starts - all scoreless efforts - and is the first pitcher since 1893 to pitch at least six scoreless innings and give up three or fewer hits in four straight outings in the same season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He will be looking to help the Tigers follow up a series-opening 10-4 victory that was marred by the loss of hot-hitting outfielder J.D. Martinez (15-for-28 over his last eight games) to a fractured right elbow. Martinez suffered the injury when he ran into the right-field wall while chasing down a fly ball and is slated to undergo a CT scan on Friday. Victor Martinez (knee) was back in the starting lineup for the first time since Sunday and recorded his second career three-homer performance as Detroit belted a season-high six overall to help halt Kansas City's five-game winning streak.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Detroit, FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (7-1, 2.52 ERA) vs. Royals RH Yordano Ventura (5-4, 4.93)

Fulmer was acquired from the New York Mets last summer as part of the package for Yoenis Cespedes and is proving to be quite an acquisition. The 23-year-old didn't pitch more than five innings in any of his first four starts while settling into the majors, but his torrid stretch has lowered the batting average against him to .212. Fulmer is starting on the road for the eighth time in 10 career starts and is 5-1 with a 3.10 ERA in his previous seven outings.

Ventura ended a four-start winless drought by giving up one run and five hits while striking out a season-best 10 in seven innings against the Chicago White Sox. He always has fared well versus Detroit, and his victory on April 13 - in which he gave up two runs and six hits in five innings - improved his career mark to 5-0 with a 3.82 ERA in seven appearances (six starts). Ventura easily has handled Nick Castellanos (1-for-11) but has struggled with Ian Kinsler (6-for-16) and has served up two homers to Victor Martinez (4-for-16).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Royals had their nine-game home winning streak halted Thursday but are an impressive at 22-8 at Kauffman Stadium.

2. Detroit CF Cameron Maybin (quadriceps) didn't start for the second time in three games.

3. Kansas City OF Brett Eibner (ankle) was activated from the disabled list on Thursday and went 2-for-4 with his first major-league home run.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (29-37) at Oakland Athletics (27-39)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 9:35 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels have combined to claim 11 of the last 14 American League West titles, but most of their remaining matchups this year - including Friday's series opener in Oakland - could be between two teams looking to avoid a last-place finish. The fourth-place Angels have put together a two-game winning streak but have still lost seven of their last 10 and lead the cellar-dwelling A's by two games.

The rivals have not met since Los Angeles took three straight in Oakland in mid-April to improve to 5-4, which was the only time the Angels been above .500 all year. The A's dropped three of four against Texas to begin the week and have lost 10 of 12 overall, nearly getting no-hit by Rangers' right-hander Colby Lewis in Thursday's 5-1 loss. Oakland has been held to one or zero runs in half of its last eight contests and enters the series batting .244 at home on the season. Angels starter Matt Shoemaker, who has been dominant over a five-start stretch, will hope to take advantage as he opposes fellow righty Kendall Graveman.

TV: 9:35 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (3-7, 4.76 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (2-6, 5.28)

Shoemaker limited Cleveland to three hits and struck out 11 in eight scoreless frames his last time out. He has a 1.88 ERA during his five-start surge, fanning 48 and walking one in 38 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old had a 9.15 ERA through April despite tossing six scoreless in a win at Oakland on April 13.

Graveman has failed to finish five innings in three of his last four starts, including four frames of one-run ball in a no-decision at Cincinnati on Sunday. He owns a 3.38 ERA in five home starts, including a solid six-inning, one-run effort against the Angels on April 12. The Mississippi State product sports a 2.12 ERA in three career encounters with Los Angeles but will be wary of designated hitter Albert Pujols, who is 4-for-8 with a home run against Graveman.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pujols remains a home run shy of tying Harmon Killebrew (573) for 11th on the all-time list.

2. Oakland pitchers have given up 11 home runs in the last four games.

3. Two-time Cy Young Award winner RHP Tim Lincecum, signed as a free agent last month, is slated to make his debut for the Angels on Saturday.

Preview: Brewers at Dodgers

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (31-36) at Los Angeles Dodgers (35-33)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired Jonathan Villar from the Houston Astros for a minor-league pitcher in the offseason and appear to have acquired a bona fide starting shortstop. Villar smacked a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning of the series opener against the host Los Angeles Dodgers and strives to continue his solid play when the teams meet again Friday in the second contest of a four-game set.

Villar went 2-for-5 with his 24th stolen base — most in the majors — in Thursday's 8-6 victory and is 8-for-20 during a five-game hitting streak to raise his season average to .302. The 25-year-old only received 116 at-bats in 2015 in his third season with the Astros and was expendable because of the presence of young star Carlos Correa. Villar helped the Brewers snap a three-game losing streak while the Dodgers opened a seven-game homestand by losing for the fourth time in their last six overall games. Los Angeles right fielder Yasiel Puig (hamstring) played seven innings in a rehab stint for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday and is expected to return to the Dodgers on Monday.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Zach Davies (5-3, 3.88 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Julio Urias (0-2, 5.82)

Davies has won four consecutive starts and is 5-0 with a 2.49 ERA over his last seven outings. He has been particularly superb over his last three turns by allowing just two runs and eight hits over 21 innings. Davies has been horrific on the road with a 1-1 mark and 7.82 ERA in three starts.

Urias is feeling his way at the major league level and flashed his potential while losing to San Francisco in his last turn. The 19-year-old struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings while giving up two runs and four hits in the best overall showing of his four big-league starts. "He's more comfortable being on a major league mound, being around the clubhouse, seeing scouting reports," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters. "Everything he does speaks to him continuing to be more comfortable."

WALK-OFFS

1. Slumping Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez was hitless in four at-bats in the opener and is just 7-for-51 in June.

2. Milwaukee 1B Chris Carter his 18th homer on Thursday — his fifth of the month — and ranks third in the National League.

3. Los Angeles OF Trayce Thompson hit a three-run blast in the opener — his fourth homer of June.

Preview: Nationals at Padres

GAME: Washington Nationals (42-25) at San Diego Padres (27-41)
DATE/TIME: Friday, June 17 - 10:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Bryce Harper ended a 14-game homerless drought in the series opener and looks to follow up a three-RBI performance when the Washington Nationals visit the San Diego Padres on Friday in the second contest of a four-game set. Harper had just four RBIs in June before clubbing a two-run homer and adding an RBI single in Thursday's 8-5 victory over the Padres.

Wilson Ramos and Anthony Rendon also went deep in the series opener as Washington won for the ninth time in its last 11 games. Harper, the defending National League MVP, started the season strong with nine homers and 24 RBIs in April but has just five homers and 17 RBIs in the past 6 1/2 weeks. The Nationals have the second-best road record (22-13) in the majors — just behind the Chicago Cubs (22-12) — while San Diego is just 16-21 at home, including 1-3 on the current seven-game homestand. The Padres have lost five of their last six overall games and have allowed 26 runs in their last three defeats.

TV: 10:40 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Joe Ross (5-4, 3.01 ERA) vs. Padres LH Christian Friedrich (3-1, 2.12)

Ross struck out eight in his last outing against Philadelphia but received a no-decision as he allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings. He is 2-0 over his last four outings after losing each of his previous four turns. Ross, the brother of injured San Diego starter Tyson Ross, won his lone career start against the Padres when he gave up one unearned run and one hit in six innings Aug. 27.

Friedrich has been sharp with a 3-0 mark and 1.82 ERA over his last four starts. He struck out a season-high nine in six innings against Colorado in his last turn when he allowed one unearned run and two hits in a no-decision. Friedrich is 0-2 with a 14.00 ERA in four career appearances (two starts) against the Nationals.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres 1B Wil Myers went 2-for-3 with a homer and two walks in the opener and eight of his 15 homers have come in June.

2. Washington SS Danny Espinosa is hitless in seven at-bats in the past two games after going 10-for-21 over his previous six contests.

3. San Diego reportedly signed RHP Edwin Jackson to a minor-league contract Thursday.
