Packers are playing hard ball. Having Favre as #2 would put TREMENDOUS pressure on Rogers to get off to a fast start or fans will start screaming for a QB change.

Dumb move by GB in my opinion. They should just do a clean break and give him a trade to an acceptable team for everyone, like Tampa.

Too early. Now waiting for a Favre response. They have plenty of time to trade him. People do not realize that Thompson and McCarthy have been communicating many times with Favre over the summer. This reminds me of a PR ploy.

they cant be serious, Favre as a backup would be a media circus and a constant distraction to everyone. if they want to move on with Rodgers, they have to let Favre go.

It makes no difference that he is selffish asshole who likes publicity.

He gives you a chance to go to the Superbowl and Rodgerts does not.

Barring injury, when Minnesota comes calling Monday night, #4 will be starting for GB.

He also screws with team chemistry. Also do you think GB drafts two qb's if he was coming back. Don't forget the cap implications here. GB spent the money they saved with his retirement (Favre's choice).

i don't understand why the Packers won't give him the starting job if he wants to play? The team was a few plays out of the super bowl last yr. You have to think wth Favre as your qb you have a chance to do the same thing. If Aaron Rodgers was that good, or even decent enought to lead an NFL team he would have been traded yrs ago to another team. Now by telling Favre he is welcome back as the #2qb makes the Packers look even worse. Something else will be done before trainig camp starts

Dont you think by the GB reaction they have confidence in Rodgers? They see him every day at practice and would not put him on the field if they did not think he could do the job. My only concern is his health and he is prone to injuries. Not bad to have #4 waiting and ready if thats the direction they want to go.

Ted Thompson is jeaolous as he was only a backup player in the league and is intimtaded by Favre's greatness. The Packers were something like 9-24 in the six years at HOME before for Favre got there. He made the franchise for over 15 years and they nedd to learn some goddamned respect. I would welcome him in Oakland and honestly where is GB actually better than Oakland? RB? No! WR NO! TE NO! OL Yes? DEFENSE NO!!!! If Favre goes to Oakland they will be better than GB and he can show those disrespectful assholes what is up while they are looking for jobs at the high scholl level next year.

i think if he was that good, neither himself, or any other NFL team would have let him rot on the GB bench the past few yrs. If you are talented enough to play at a high level he would have done so already

I basically agree with you, but I will throw Steve Young out there as I know someone else will. I dont see any comparisions between Rogdgers and Young though.

This is much more like like the Oilers getting rid of Warren Moon for Cody Carlson and watching Moon throw for over 4,000 yards with the Vikings at least twice.

I don't care who you are. You can't hold a team hostage like this-ESPECIALLY being a QB. They have a business to run, a field to put on the team and trade\draft decisions to be made. You just can't do this to them.

Fish is right-he should just fade off into the sunset & say that this was an ill fated idea.

i was thinking about this and Steve Young was the only long time back up that ever took over and was highly successful.

If you do cetain things you earn certain rights. This team was horiible for almost thirty years before he got there. They had maybe one bad season in his 15+. If he wants that team called the Green Bay Favres he has almost earned that. What has Ted Thompson done? A backup limeman? it looks like the only thing McCarthy has done since he got in Wisconsin is hit the all you can eat fish fry's at the VFW, they are both jeaolous losers.

As much as i hate to say it I compare this to the John Elway situation. The Broncos were very good ( winning a SB ) and Elway retired. Elway was still a very good player, but he was more a fuction of the team at that point. He couldn't single handedly will the team to the playoffs by himself anymore, but fuctioning as the leader the team functioned great. Do you think if Elway walks back during training camp Shanahan tells him good to see you John go work with the second time while Griese runs first.

I hate the Broncos, but this shows what classless losers the Packers are.

The fact that the Packers drafted not 1, but 2 QBs tells you how good Aaron is.

Yes, the Pack has a business to run. It sure would have been nice if Brett had told them earlier and they could have drafted differently

Brett acting like an ass makes no difference.

The GMs job is to win and run the team and make money. Having Favre at QB gives you the best chance to win this year, next year and probably for even 3-4 years. IT also gives you the best chance to bring in $$s on ads, playoff games, etc.

So if you are GB's manager, your job is to give Brett a hug, welcome him back, decide which of Rodgerts, BRohm, and whats his name will be next after BRett and trade the other 2 for guys who make you contend NOW.

Most teams would be estatic to have a NFC championship game squad, get back Brett, and have a 1st and 2nd round QB availableto trade

The only thing the GM is doing now is pushing up trade value for Rodgerts or Brohm. It would be unthinkable to not let Brett play and it would completely alienate the entire team... YOu want to tell 45 guys, we might be able to go to the SB, but instead we are rebuilding?

Good call but I honestly believe that Thompson has pissed Brett off to the point that he honestly wants to play somewhere else. This is where being the only publicly owned team is a problem. If this were Oak, Dal, Wash, etc. He could walk into the owners office and get this BS cleared up without having to deal with a bitter former not even mediocre player calling the shots.

I compare Thompson to the high scholl nerd who becomes a cop. When he pulls over the QB and the QB is borderline DUI do you thing he is getting any breaks?

Look who he was behind? What kind of statement is that? He had time to learn a very complex system and is ready to go. I am as big of a #4 fan as anybody but its time to move on as a business.

Wrong, Rodgers has been "learning", preparing, sitting, the successor, whatever you want to call it, for only 3 years. 2 of those years the Packers were held hostage by Favre and his retire don't retire bull shit. How could they trade him? Who would have been their QB? Trading a guy you drafted with the singular purpose of succeeding Favre is retarded unless you (i) get someone young who you think is better; or (ii) find out he sucks.

Neither has happened, what would make you say he has "rotted" on any bench? The list of QBs that had high level success in their first three seasons out of college is far shorter than the list of those that didn't have success until after that third year. Many, many QBs "rotted" for a few years before starting and went on to have good success. To wit, and just off the top of my head:

Hasselbeck
Brunnell
Brad Johnson
Rich Gannon
Philip Rivers
Delhomme
Bulger
Warner
Garcia
Aaron Brooks
Derek Anderson

And whoever said Aaron Rodgers is "injury prone", he never missed a game in college and, albeit he is not playing, hasn't been injured since.
