Never been there I just remember VD saying how gambling is strictly prohibited in that country.
Talk to VD I could be wrong but that's what I thought I heard him say many times.

Twoplustwo has an enormous thread talking about all the online poker playing fromThailand. If it is against the law, they dont enforce it. Ill link the thread when Im not posting from my phone.

Harry:

From what you posted earlier you would be a fool for not coming:( just kidding)
Being single and not wanting the nightlife is a definite plus...... Lots of time and money can be wasted in the Thai nightlife.

You can gamble on line here you just cant legally go someplace in country and gamble.... although there are many gambling dens throughout the city if you know the right people and where to go!!

I cook a lot myself.... you can get most things that you can get back home but you may pay more or a lot more. Good beef is at a premium. Most things are cheap here but not as cheap as they were a few years ago. In BKK Villa and Foodland are the best places for imported foods.

An example: cherries when you ca get them are 10-15 dollars a pound. but that is an extreme example!

What you listed above woukd drive me to drink again, what's the sponsor say?

Haven't talked to him, we only talk ~ once a month, he lives in the midwest and I'm down here in bama. Either way, we both came to an agreement long ago that I am my own man and make my own decisions. :)

What about it would make you drink again bb?

You will have forgotten every woman you've dated in america within a few months after moving to thailand or anywhere else In asia. You are foolish if you don't accept this offer. Plus you'll receive a 25% raise? You will live very well on an american salary in thailand. Have fun and best of luck to you. Don't be an idiot like so many farangs and marry the first thai woman that treats you good.

If thats case it sounds like this is something you should do for a year or 2.
If you don't like it move back

It's a 1 year assignment. Work would put me up in a condo. Basically their offer is:

25% raise from what I make now
They will pay to put all my stuff in storage
They will fly me home twice
They will fly my family out once
They pay for a furnished condo and car service
They will pay any Thai taxes and pay to have my US taxes done, I'm still on the hook for the federal

I'm not sure exactly where in Bangkok, more details are coming

I'm a single dude and I keep pretty quiet. Work a lot of hours and like to cook my own food, watch some tube/game, play online poker in my free time...that's about it. I don't need much in terms of entertainment.

Also if you didn't know already I'm a sober alcoholic, so I'm not interested in the nightlife per se. I do love to golf.

I'm thinking I could just put one year in, play a shitload of Poker Stars, bet at Pinnacle, stack cash (zero living expenses, I'm a winning poker player and break-even sports gambler), and bang some hookers.

You know if you would be equalized? Meaning you would be required to pay the same amount of taxes had you not went on assignment? Thats what I would aim for, but even if not - you can always claim Thai taxes against US taxes (but if company is paying them - it would make sense for them to equalize you).

You guaranteed a spot with your job when you come back? I have seen it where people don't have a job for them once the assignment ends.

Sounds like a pretty good setup to me, but personally - i dont think I could adjust to a new country altho there is probably an expat community that you would live near

No offense HC, if you don't take this, you need your head examined. This a no brainer, you will be able to save a ton of cash and get a great experience.

Still figuring out some of the details before I make a decision one way or the other. I asked if I'd have a "this sucks I wanna go home" safety valve. They came back with "we will give you a 25k bonus at the end of the assignment if you stay the whole time, is that incentive enough to not have to go down that road?" Hahahaha

Jebus!!!

If they can add in "You still have a job here when you get back reagardless of when that is", my next response is "He Gone!"

I would love a chance to move, bro. good luck in what you decide.

I'd suggest anyone considering a move to Thailand consider spending a good amount of time reading through the archives of Stickman Bangkok's weekly columns, he goes through both the good and the bad when it comes to Thailand.

Do it.
One thing is for sure if you don't go 20 years from now you are going to say yourself "what if?"
If you do go. 20 years from now you won't say "what if?"

what if? Is always the worst question anyone could ever ask themselves.
