ok, the only view that is even worth looking at is the underwater view for that last finish. i replayed it frame by frame about 10 times. you tell for sure when cavic's fingers touch because they flex backwards. with phelps... it appears that his right hand splashes down thru the water and we dont get to see his fingers change from straight to flexed. fingers are flexed backward coming thru the water one frame before cavic touches. as impossible as the result seems... it really looks like he did it. cavic was coasting for the touch and phelps was coming in like a fcking freight train. absolutely unreal finish.

3 words : NEW........SPEEDO.......SUITS

I dont care who you are. World Records are not just broken like this race after race unless somehting weird is going on. And the new speedo suits are said to be slicker than human skin. I know people will say, well, they still train, but the suit gives them that added .05 seconds minimum in every race. With these great athletes, that = WR broken constantly.

IMO

Heard on the radio today that the pool is also a foot deeper than normal. Less resistance on the surface due it taking longer for the turbulence to hit bottom & bounce back to the surface.

I can't wait for next week when everyone forgets about Phelps until 2012. I don't see how people can't understand the fact that swimming is a sport that can be dominated by one person. The fact that Mark Spitz was the previous record holder for most golds should make this clearly obvious. No other sport can be dominated the way swimming is. Phelps is the best in his relatively uncompetitive sport but no where near the best athlete in the world.

Michael Phelps has done in water what Usain Bolt has done on land.

That is the only difference, using PKJ's logic, Bolt is just a freaking runner for crying out loud.

Not close; there are several reasons why Bolt's performance is more impressive. No person has ever won gold in the 100m and 200m in a single Olympics. Track and Field events are significantly more competitive than swimming, hence the reason why there is always a different winner for the 100m, 110m hurdles, 200m, and 400m. You can't win any 2 of those (until Usain Bolt) because it's not humanly possible. Comparing Phelps 8 golds to Bolt's 2 golds is like comparing apples and oranges because with swimming, a single swimmer often dominates the rest of the field in many events (eg: Phelps, Spitz).

My bad, first person to break both world records in a single Olympics.

phelps was part of 7 broken world records.

now if bolt was to run the 400 and win that too , then i might agree .

you made it sound like any swimmer often dominates several events. ya 2 guys in 36 years...

LOL....my thoughts exactly. Thats like saying a single runner can dominate every race (eg: Lewis, Johnson).

funny stuff

Yes close, as a matter of fact one can argue what Phelps did is more impressive.
Swimmers use more muscle groups than runners.
Leg drive is more critical in running, arm drive is more critical in swinning.
However leg drive in swimming is more important than arm drive is in running.

What does this have to do with anything? The level of competition is what is important, and Track and Field has significantly more. I remember my high school swimming team had like 4 fat kids on it while our track team had like 40.

OK, the last post I made was to show that swimmers are every bit, if not more, the athlete the runners are.

OK, let's move past that, the two athletes set standards in their sports, each breaking world records.

Using you logic, what the greatest football rusher (let's use Jim Brown for example) is greater than what say what Wayne Gretzky did in hockey because the level of competiton is greater in the NFL than the NHL.
