Brilliant goal post moving in this thread
It's very simple.

A non-elite QB as your starter is fine until you draft the franchise variety, so long as they don't get too greedy and screw up your cap.

"The Eagles just made a very big mistake"
"The Cowboys just made a very big mistake"
"The Browns just made a very big mistake"
"The Cards just made a very big mistake"

Ad infinitum..

Eagles could get alot more for Hurts right now than the Packers can get for Rodgers and each probably has 2 and max 3 years left.

Eagles should be selling high... He needs everything around him to be perfect to be effective and the chance of a black qb to keep having success is very low. That is going to be some rough dead cap

Why would they do what you say and draft Richardson? He probably sucks, most QB's suck their rookie year. You don't even think he is good. Even if you think black QBs are good for a few years, most of them suck their first few years. Fields, Hurts both weren't good their rookie year.

So what happens if you have an awful QB the next few years? You just torched your SB window.

Why would you take this risk when all you have to do is pay Hurts?

You think the Eagles can just build a team in 5 years like they have now? Why? I haven't seen 1 team show they have much of a sustainable edge drafting in the modern NFL where everyone has equal resources in scouting department and everyone is privy to the same info.

The Eagles and 49ers last year were equally talented.

49ers made it to the semis with not their #1, not their #2, but their #3 QB, Brock Purdy. They were so good they did not not need a star QB. Then Purdy got hurt in the 1st quarter vs Philly and the #4 was absolutely incompetent, season over.

Hurts was playing on a team similar to the 49ers, and the Eagles did not need a QB to be at the top tier level of NFL QBs. Hurts is like the flea on the axle of a moving chariot, looks back at all that dust and thinks he is awesome.

This yr, if the Eagles stay healthy, they have a shot at the SB again. If they lose a few key players to injury, they will have problems. Hurts himself might get dinged, or injured significantly if he runs as much as last season, and FYI a non throwing shoulder injury can affect a QB a lot, though some posters here do not know it.

Then year 2 & 3 of this mistake the Eagles will lose more top notch players to FA that they cannot pay for, having spent world record $51M on Hurts. Things will deteriorate. They need to win the SB this year to make this miscalculation pay off.

Everybody should love the Hurts/Eagles deal.

The way Howie Roseman structured the deal there is only like an $18 million cap hit the next 4 years. Not as cheap as on his rookie deal, buy not too bad either. Plenty of money for other players still. Hurts gets paid, good for him , Eagles will be contenders for years, great for Philly. In 4 years there will be totally screwed, the will be the Saints from the last two years, or this years Rams. They will need to rebuild.

Makes the Chiefs superbowl this year that much more impressive. This was their "rebuilding" year when they were screwed by the cap, not as extreme but still won the championship somehow, props to Reid and Mahomes.

Even the "black QB's suck crowd" should love this deal...

1) "black QB's are only good for 4-5 years , then get hurt and suck because they can't run anymore" - perfect, only need 3-4 good years, then Hurts can suck with the rest of the rebuilding team in cap hell

2) "Hurts is only good because the Eagles offense is stacked" perfect, they didn't lose much on offense. Still stacked and may be even more stacked next year, all key players are locked up. Biggest concern is Kelce, Lane Johnson getting old. Rest of the offense is hitting their prime the next 3-4 years

It’s all backloaded .

They are banking on the salary cap being significantly higher in 5 years .
Also when it gets close to the end instead of taking a huge cap hit they can redo the deal and kick the can down the road even more . Saints been doing this for years

Good points

I was wondering what the cap ramifications were.

I guess restructure those last years, lower his salary, and give more guaranteed money.

I still dont know if he is a very good QB, a good QB, or just an ok QB

Pretty team friendly deal, at least for a contract of this size. Heavily backloaded and bonus driven to lessen the cap hits the next several seasons.

Cap is increasing like 5-7% per year and they can always restructure further down the line to limit cap ramifications.

Whether you think Hurts is worth any sort of large deal is up for debate, but if you are going to give one, this is structured fairly well for the Birds.

If they can continue to draft fairly well, acquire extra picks and navigate free agency as well as they have been, they could at least remain in the mix for several years. I wouldn’t doubt if they go heavy OL/DL in the draft once again as they always seem to build out from the line of scrimmage over all else and obviously, having two No. 1 picks helps.

If he doesn't rework the deal and they cut him in year 5 is there a salary cap hit?

Hurts is a free agent after this season. If he has another good season this year, then they would have paid him even more.

Jalen will play on his rookie deal this season. Good move by both agent and team
