Waste of money, I avoid organic food, it's a clever marketing ploy.

I buy organic milk since the date in them is a month and a half past regular milk

Thats because organic milk is double pasteurized. They could do that to regular milk too. Walmart did it and there was a big out cry to stop it. While the milk will last unopened once you open the milk you need to drink it in a couple of weeks.

Eat your GMO's and you will actually be healthier.....wayyyyyy less pesticides used on them, especially with corn, the #1 most consumed food product.

Some gal at the casino the other day says she does not drink some beers any longer because they contain GMO's......lolololololololo

Many layers to this topic.
Just avoiding gmos doesn't make a big difference.

Need em to check on pesticide free too, etc.

its amazing what what healtth eating can do for you.

you are technically medicating your body with food 3 or so times day. Why would you put crap in yourself.
Food keeps your body running. Give it good stuff.
Most of us are used to feeling somewhat lethargic. Imagine feeling good and healthy.

I don't buy into any of the fear mongering that GMO foods are bad for you, and science backs me up that. But I do like organic produce especially tomato's because I think they taste better. I also shop a lot at Trader Joes, and Whole Foods because I like their business models and quality. I like their politics, plus they pay and treat their employees pretty good. The CEO of Whole Foods is a Libertarian and Rand Paul's biggest donator, so I like to support them, plus they have great products. Trader Joes products are tasty too. Both of these stores have healthier options too, that have nothing to do with GMO/Organic.

their produce generally sucks

A huge scam in most instances.

I buy what tastes good to me

This is correct, the science of GMO's have decreased the use of pesticides on our crops by 36%, that is a fact. Science is awesome. I have a friend too that made a post about the beer thing on face book. As if it's the GM grains thats causing his health problems? And yes the scientific consensus is that there is no difference between GMO and Organic. It's an 89% consensus. These are peer reviewed researches.

LOL. Then we're safe :)

sometimes 'peer reviewed research' doesn't get it right. It needs the test OF TIME...:). We're the test tubes, don't be so haste to gobble the 'they are' safe rhetoric ESPECIALLY on a product introduced en masse in a relatively short period of time, since 1994.

Why are they now offering 'gluten free' foods ? any idea why? is it safe to say that the gluten 'peer reviewed' research say 30 yrs was NOT entirely accurate? :)

did you read the link i provided? care to comment on it

Dramatic Correlation Shown Between GMOs And 22 Diseases

As Use Of GMO’s Crops Glyphosate Rise So Do Critical Diseases

There is a growing movement for labeling of GMO crops, and many would go further and ban GMOs completely. Currently there is a close vote in Oregon on a GMO labeling initiative, with advocates for labeling 0.3% behind and raising money to check ballots (we urge your support). Those who profit from GMOs spent $20 million to prevent labeling in Oregon. Several states in the Northeast have put in place laws that will require labeling.

Vermont is about to be sued to prevent GMO labeling. GMO profiteers have an unusual marketing strategy. While most companies brag about their product, the GMO industry spends hundreds of millions to hide their product. The US does not require labeling of GMOs despite the fact that 64 countries around the world label GMO foods.

Millions have marched against Monsanto urging labeling or the banning of GMO products. There is a national consensus in favor of labeling but the government has been unable to respond. Indeed, President Obama’s food czar is a former Monsanto executive. The deep corruption of government is putting the health of the American people at serious risk.

The research highlighted below, “Genetically engineered crops, glyphosate and the deterioration of health in the United States of America,” was published in The Journal of Organic Systems this September and links GMOs to 22 diseases with very high correlation. We reprinted many of the graphs from the study that show an incredible correlation between the rise of GMO crops that use the herbicide glyphosate and a wide range of diseases.

Glyphosate was introduced to the marketplace in 1974 but data on its use is only available since 1990. Monsanto has genetically modified foods so that they are resistant to glyphosate, a herbicide Monsanto sells, resulting in a dramatic increase in the use of glyphosate. The study points out that research has shown that “glyphosate disrupts the ability of animals, including humans, to detoxify xenobiotics. This means that exposures to the numerous chemicals in food and the environment, such as endocrine disrupting chemicals and carcinogens, could be causing levels of damage that would not occur if the body were able to detoxify them.”
Correlation is not proof of causation. But the authors point out “we have data for 22 diseases, all with a high degree of correlation and very high significance. It seems highly unlikely that all of these can be random coincidence.” They point out that according to “the American Academy of Environmental Medicine’s position paper on genetically modified (GM) foods: ‘everal animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signaling, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system.’”

The conclusions of the study are:
“These data show very strong and highly significant correlations between the increasing use of glyphosate, GE crop growth and the increase in a multitude of diseases. Many of the graphs show sudden increases in the rates of diseases in the mid-1990s that coincide with the commercial production of GE crops. The large increase in glyphosate use in the US is mostly due to the increase in glyphosate-resistant GE crops.
“The probabilities in the graphs and tables show that it is highly unlikely that the correlations are a coincidence. The strength of the correlations shows that there is a very strong probability that they are linked somehow. The number of graphs with similar data trends also indicates a strong probability that there is a link. Although correlation does not necessarily mean causation, when correlation coefficients of over 0.95 (with p-value significance levels less than 0.00001) are calculated for a list of diseases that can be directly linked to glyphosate, via its known biological effects, it would be imprudent not to consider causation as a plausible explanation.
“We do not imply that all of these diseases have a single cause as there are many toxic substances and pathogens that can contribute to chronic disease. However, no toxic substance has increased in ubiquity in the last 20 years as glyphosate has. . . . Another critical issue is that glyphosate is an endocrine disruptor and it has been argued that there are no safe levels of endocrine disruptors. This would imply that the current permitted residue levels in food could be causing multiple health problems that have been documented in the scientific literature to be caused by endocrine disrupting chemicals.” [Citations omitted]

A root cause of the problem is that United States’ regulatory structure is backward, making people into guinea pigs instead of protecting them. As the researchers write:
“… the regulatory approach in the US is reactionary rather than precautionary. Instead of taking preventive action when uncertainty exists about the potential harm a chemical or other environmental contaminant may cause, a hazard must be incontrovertibly demonstrated before action is initiated. Instead of requiring industry to prove the safety of their devices or chemical products, the public bears the burden of proving that a given environmental exposure is harmful.”

As to next steps, the researchers urge independent scientific research (sadly, too much research is funded by corporations that profit from GMO crops]. They write:
“The data presented in this paper highlight the need for independent scientific research to be conducted, especially in the areas of the endocrine disruption, cancer precursor, oxidative stress, gut microbiome and the Cytochrome P450 pathways. It is our hope that, in addition to more basic research in the form of toxicology and carcinogenic studies, epidemiology studies will be undertaken by experts in each of these disease categories.”

In the meantime, people need to continue to take political action to require labeling, urge a new regulatory structure that applies the precautionary principle and urge the banning of GMO crops now that correlation to disease is being shown. There are a few things you can do to protect yourself from GMO foods: (1) Buy organic, (2) Look for the Non-GMO seal, (3) Avoid crops where GMO’s are common.

The eight GM food crops are Corn, Soybeans, Canola, Cottonseed, Sugar Beets, Hawaiian Papaya (most) and a small amount of Zucchini and Yellow Squash. Sugar is likely to contain GMO beets unless it is labeled as pure cane sugar. Dairy is also likely to be GMO unless it is labeled No rBGH, rBST, or artificial hormones. Here’s a non-GMO shopping guide for further assistance.

Below are some of the key charts from the Journal of Organic Systems study.

imho, by far the greatest dangers in GMO's is in its potential to harm the GUT. Gut health is critical for overall health. Unfortunately research into GMO's long term safety is in its infancy. We do know that since the mid 1990's the following are all rising; obesity, diabetes, auto-immune disease (dramatic rise....Dr. Fasano's work was ground breaking and he now goes as far as saying you cant get auto-immune disease without having leaking gut syndrome, !!), allergies. OF COURSE , other factors play a role.

GMOs linked to gluten disorders plaguing 18 million Americans - report

Genetically modified foods such as soy and corn may be responsible for a number of gluten-related maladies including intestinal disorders now plaguing 18 million Americans, according to a new report released on Tuesday.
TagsHealth, USA, Science, Food, GMO

The report was released by the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT), and cites authoritative data from the US Department of Agriculture, US Environmental Protection Agency records, medical journal reviews as well as international research.
“Gluten sensitivity can range in severity from mild discomfort, such as gas and bloating, to celiac disease, a serious autoimmune condition that can, if undiagnosed, result in a 4-fold increase in death,” said Jeffrey M. Smith, executive director of IRT in a statement released on their website.

Smith cited how a “possible environmental trigger may be the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to the American food supply, which occurred in the mid-1990s,” describing the nine GM crops currently on the market.

In soy, corn, cotton (oil), canola (oil), sugar from sugar beets, zucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya, and alfalfa, “Bt-toxin, glyphosate, and other components of GMOs, are linked to five conditions that may either initiate or exacerbate gluten-related disorders,” according to Smith.

It’s the BT-toxin in genetically modified foods which kills insects by “puncturing holes in their cells.” The toxin is present in ‘every kernel’ of Bt-corn and survives human digestion, with a 2012 study confirming that it punctures holes in human cells as well.

The GMO-related damage was linked to five different areas: Intestinal permeability, imbalanced gut bacteria, immune activation and allergic response, impaired digestion, and damage to the intestinal wall.

The IRT release also indicated that glyphosate, a weed killer sold under the brand name ‘Roundup’ was also found to have a negative effect on intestinal bacteria. GMO crops contain high levels of the toxin at harvest.

“Even with minimal exposure, glyphosate can significantly reduce the population of beneficial gut bacteria and promote the overgrowth of harmful strains,” the report found.

Dr. Tom O’Bryan, internationally recognized expert on gluten sensitivity and Celiac Disease, says that “the introduction of GMOs is highly suspect as a candidate to explain the rapid rise in gluten-related disorders over the last 17 years.”

Internist, Emily Linder, offered some backup for the report’s findings. She removed GMO from her patients’ diets, finding that recovery from intestinal diseases was faster and more complete.

“I believe that GMOs in our diet contribute to the rise in gluten-sensitivity in the US population,” Linder said in the release.

LOL you post from conspiracy sites like natural news. I post from popular science, and peer reviewed scientific research. You can believe its poison and causes cancer all you want. The scientific research including thousands of independent reputable papers, have concluded otherwise. Ribcof can say the research hasn't been going on long enough. That's fine but that doesn't prove anything, and it's fear mongering to think that it does. The consensus research point to both of your claims about allergies, cancer, ect.. to not be true. You can believe what you want, but that doesn't change the scientific consensus.

There's been a rise in autism since vaccines were introduced, so that means vaccines cause autism right? That's junk science. Other things could and probably are causing these rises. That's why research is needed and done. Plenty of research has been done and there is nothing that links these things to GMO's and plenty of research that proves consumption of junk food does cause these things.

Yeah let's ban all GMO products and watch food prices absolutely skyrocket. It's a joke. The GMO corn I raise now is more safe for the environment than the non GMO we used to raise. No offense to people who believe all the propaganda sent out by liberal environmentalists but without GMO you would be paying a lot more for your food today.

It's just a big lie perpetrated by greedy criminals in bed with politicians who care only about money and not about people's health.
