My favorite rationalization is number 1:
TRANSCENDENTAL ARGUMENT, a.k.a. PRESUPPOSITIONALIST (I)
(1) If reason exists then God exists.
(2) Reason exists.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

Now that's what I call a strong argument. Not.

I think this argument came from the atheist humour page, not the one
you quoted i.e. my recommendation which is:

http://www.geocities.com/meta_crock/IntroGod.htm

http://www.geocities.com/meta_crock/listGodarguments.htm

The first is the intro & the 2nd contains 40 arguments.

The first is the intro & the 2nd contains 40 arguments.

After the 40 arguments he presents item 41, "Cumulative Case"
{pardon the spelling!}:

"The principle of a cummulative case was discussed by Basil Mitchel in The Justification of Religious Belief. The Danger of such a case is that it might be seen as the 10 leaky bucketts fallacy; All the arguments put together prove God even if no one of them dose individually. In other words, all of the bucketts hold water when taken together even if none of them do alone. But the difference is that I'm not saying that taken all together all of these fallacious arguments stack up to a good one. First, I dont' think any of them are fallacious, I think any one of the arguments presented above proves the case, at least to the extent of offering a rational warrant for belief. The notion of the cumulative case here is that taken together each argument's strengths plug up a hole in the over all case, thus the cumulative case is stronger than mere rational warrant, but actually demonstrates a certain kind of porbability for the God hypothesis. At the very least they show that the atheist is unjustified in saying that "there is no good reason to beleive in God."

I appreciate the links. I read them and find it to be just more wishful thinking. I didn't find any of the arguments compelling. Here is a short and utterly baseless argument that is presented there.

4) Trancendental Signifyer and Being has to be.

Demonstrates that being itself has certain qualities we associate with God and that there has to be an organizing principle which gives meaning to the universe.

Do you remember any of the good arguments for the existence of God? I really want to believe, I just need some help.

A very basic one is the ad infinitum argument, that at some point, something must have created something and this is proven by the fact that we exist. For something to exist, something has to create it. Even big bang theorists cant argue that, what created the original molecule that led to the big bang?

Had to be something that started it all-hence that thing would essentially be God, the creator of all things. Whether your a Christian, Muslim, Buddhist or whatever, the one thing you have to agree with is that there was an original creator.

Cheers

Then who created God? and what created that?

it seems that for things we cant explain, we say either God created it or it was magic.

Good God now I need a drink.:drink:

I just find it strange how so many people can take such belief in the Bible. Hell, with all the technology today, people cant get stories right or straight (I mean does anyone even know if Britney is in rehab or not), but we are supposed to believe in the reporting that happened over 2,000 years ago??? It's fine to believe in the Bible and recite passage upon passage. However use your head some. Just dont blindly accept things because it has been passed down or you have been brain washed.

You know how many people think they are God or God-like in the world today? Thousands maybe even millions! We know today that these people have some form of schizophrenia. They didnt know that way back yonder.

Look we are all given brains and we are expected to use them. There may very well be a God. There may also not be one. If God does exist who is to say he/she is a nice guy/gal. Who is to say? Last I checked none of us asked to be in this world. Life is not easy. There are a lot of bad things that happen to every person. There are a lot of good things too. We are here. So why not go out, enjoy life, and do some good in the world. Take care of each other. Instead of trying to screw one another over. Go out there and do some good. No one will win the argument whether there is a God or not. No one. No matter how hard we try.

Amen brother. You guys will have more trying to fuck bigfoot than winning this argument.

Rather than continue this thread I suggest everyone contribute your best / worst God jokes:

Here's mine, read on a bathroom wall:

"Canel Easter. They found the body."

That kills me. :missingte

Disagreement is the nature of this world. Just look at the CBB board.
Good cappers with strong opinions on opposite sides of a game. Or
the many different religions. Even Christianity has hundreds of sects.
I'd bet atheists are similarly divided in their opinions.

Bottom line, either there is 1} a God or 2} no God/Creator. But i'm
sure someone would disagree with that ;

Personally i believe He is & would get a headache just reading through
all of Metacrock's arguments. My belief isn't based on an argument
but upon an inner knowing/faith. I also believe that in the end, He
will reconcile all beings to HImself, so that none will be eternally
tortured in hell, and all beings who ever existed will be saved. As
the Scriptures say:

[20] by him to reconcile all to himself; by him, I say, whether they
be in earth, or in heaven. {COL 1:20}

This is another argument based on false logic. If something had to create the universe. What created that something? If that something was spontaneously created, what prevents the universe from being spontaneously created?

By definition, an explanation must establish causal connections between one event and another. An explanation must expand our knowledge and understanding of the event being explained. The theistic “explanation” if nothing of the sort because it seeks to “explain” something unknown (like the origin of the universe) with something at least as mysterious and, according to theological premises, permanently beyond our understanding. It’s absurd to offer as an “explanation” something which you turn around and immediately say not only can’t be explained, but can’t even really be understood. Well, if it can’t be understood, then it’s unreasonable to think that we can understand it enough to conclude much of anything about it — especially something so significant as the idea that it could be responsible for the universe around us.

So it appears that no one can offer proof or reason to believe in God. I win :)

It just comes down to faith.

You have it, or you don't.

What keeps me going in my healthy belief in GOD is the reported near death experiences people have.

Now before you go into your chant that its just your brain synapse's firing off, do a little research on the subject.

My father had an out of body experience once and it's something he'll never forget. Not saying he had a ND experience but I do think it's linked.

Their are things in this world that are just plain unexplainable and mysterious that even rational science can't explain. Just a fact.

Is it God? who knows and we really won't be 100% sure until we die.

We'll all find out the answer, wait and see.

Researchers have been unsuccessful in running proactive experiments to establish out-of-body consciousness. There have been numerous experiments in which a random message was placed in a hospital in a manner that it would be invisible to patients or staff yet visible to a floating being, but so far, according to Blackmore (1991), these experiments have only provided equivocal results and no clear signs of ESP.
A Swiss study (Blanke. et.al, 2002), published in Nature Magazine, found that electrical stimulation on the brain region known as the right angular gyrus repeatedly caused out-of-body experiences to the patient. According to this perspective the etiology of the NDE is understood as a result of neurobiological mechanisms, related to such factors as epilepsy and brain stimulation. The similarities amongst the experiences of the many documented cases of NDE may be understood to signify that the pathology of the brain during the dying and reviving process is more or less the same in all humans, as suggested by Russian specialist Dr. Vladimir Negovsky.

This thread has proven that we can all give up on believing in God and other voodoo. Not one compelling argument has been given that demonstrates proof or reason to believe that any god exists. So you can all stop going to church and start tithing your money elsewhere.

I disagree. I believe the people in this forum to be intelligent and informed individuals. No one has offered any reason to believe in God or evidence of his existance. This leads me to the conclusion that in fact, God does not exist. If you have any compelling arguments I will be glad to listen.

If not, then...

Do you remember any of the good arguments for the existence of God? I really want to believe, I just need some help.

If there is no God, then Jesus was a lunatic because He claimed to be God. Are you prepared to proclaim Him such? Tread lightly.
