Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

— Cleveland Browns hired Gregg Williams to run their defense next season.

— Pacers 123, Knicks 109— NY is now 0-7 on back end of a back/back, 2-5 vs spread.

— Nevada 105, New Mexico 104 OT— I think Coach Neal can start looking for a new job after Lobos blew a 17-point lead with 2:42 left to play.

— Boise State 78, San Diego State 66— Aztecs are 0-3 in Mountain West, Boise State is 3-0. Colorado State is tied for 2nd place, but Rams are down to seven eligible players.

— Early line on next week’s NFC playoff game: Falcons (-4) vs Seattle.

— Pistons-Blazers NBA game was postponed due to an ice storm in Portland.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Texans 27, Raiders 14— Oakland was having such a great season until Derek Carr broke his leg, then the whole fell apart very quickly. Raiders were also without their LT, center and backup QB in this game, as Houston advances to play the Patriots in Foxboro next week.

Back in Week 3, Texans were actually favored (-1) in Foxboro, but the Jacoby Brissett-led Patriots smoked Houston 27-0. New England will have a better QB playing next week.

12) Seahawks 26, Lions 6— Detroit wound up 0-4 in outdoor games this season, scoring 13.3 pts/game in those four; they haven’t won a playoff game since 1991 and before that, 1957.

Overall, Lions have lost nine straight playoff games, an NFL record; their last road playoff win was when Dwight Eisenhower was President. Oy.

Cris Collinsworth was saying how the Lions “have something going now”, referring to their long-term contention, but they also trailed in 4th quarter in 16 of 17 games this season, so they conceivably could’ve been a 1-15 team, instead of a playoff team.

11) Mississippi State 95, LSU 78— There was wintry weather in the south this weekend, so Miss State took a bus to Baton Rouge, rather than flying. On their way, they saw a car skid on the ice and turn over off the side of the road.

Miss State coaches/trainers got an unconscious woman out of the car and she is reportedly doing well in the hospital. Then the Bulldogs went to LSU and drilled the Tigers, their best win of the year. Hopefully everyone got home safely.

10) Baylor 61, Oklahoma State 57— Monday morning the Bears will be #1 in the country for the first time; they were lucky in this game— Oklahoma State was only 11-20 on the foul line. Baylor isn’t the best team in the country, but they’re having a surprisingly good season and figure to be a top 4 seed in the NCAA’s, as long as they stay healthy.

9) Notre Dame 75, Clemson 70— Irish were 15-32 on the arc as the better team lost this game. Clemson was up 7 at the half but lost their second straight nailbiter. There were a total of only 14 foul shots taken in this whole game.

Game was 70-70 with 1:10 left, so if you took 4 points with Clemson, this was a bad beat.

8) Villanova 93, Marquette 81— Wildcats were a ridiculous 14-23 on the arc; Marquette was 14-31. Wildcats shot 69% inside the arc, scored 1.43 pts/possession, which is really good.

7) Upset of the Day: Tex-San Antonio 69, Louisiana Tech 68— Roadrunners were a 16-point underdog; they trailed by 10 at the half.

6) Weber State at Idaho State— Weber State led 13-2 less than 5:00 into the game, but then the game was suspended due to a leaky roof in Idaho State’s gym.

5) Nevada coach Eric Musselman once coached the Rapid City Thrillers in the old CBA, which basically was the D-League before the D-League existed. One of his players in Rapid City was current Mew Mexico coach Craig Neal, who is 4-5 years older than Musselman.

Now the two are Mountain West coaching rivals.

4) NC State-North Carolina, Gonzaga-Portland and Wofford-Samford games were postponed and will be played today. There was cruddy weather all over the country Saturday.

3) Butler 85, Georgetown 76 OT— Bulldogs were little flat with noon tipoff three days after they knocked off Villanova, but they shot 10-20 on the arc and survived a stunningly-soft Georgetown team that is now 0-4 in the Big East.

Bulldogs never got on their flight home; the plane had mechanical issues, second road game in a row Butler had airplane issues trying to get back to Indianapolis.

2) Georgia 71, Missouri 66— Assistant coaches from both sides got into a little fracas as the end of the first half. Players were milling around, but the coaches were more fired up than they were. I’m guessing there will be fines. Mizzou was 6-36 on the arc in this game; they’re not very good.

1— Kid named Sam Cunliffe transferred from Arizona State after his first semester of college; think he scored 9.5 pts/game for ASU but now will be going to Kansas, where he’ll be eligible at this time next year.

This transferring is getting ridiculous; an AVERAGE of two kids per team transferred after last year and there are 351 Division I teams. Teams are basically getting rebuilt on the fly, like an expansion team in pro sports.

UNLV, Delaware basically had to cob together teams wherever they could find players last April/May after coaching changes and player defections. Hurts the quality of the product, for sure.

NBA roundup: Cavs prevail after blowing big lede
January 9, 2017

PHOENIX -- Kyrie Irving, LeBron James and Kevin Love combined for 80 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers blew a 20-point third-quarter lead but hung on to beat the Phoenix Suns 120-116 on Sunday.

James had 12 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers 25 seconds apart to stretch a two-point Cleveland edge to a 115-109 lead with 2:47 left. Irving scored 27 points and Love added 25 points for Cleveland, which beat Phoenix for the fourth straight time.

The Cavaliers won 15 of their last 18 games and have their best 36-game start since going 30-6 to start the 2008-09 season. Cleveland is 8-2 against the Western Conference.

Eric Bledsoe had 31 points and Devin Booker added 28 for the Suns, who missed a chance for their first three-game winning streak since Nov. 12-16, 2015.

Warriors 117, Kings 106

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Losers after putting up a 24-point lead in their previous contest, Golden State overcame a lethargic first half thanks to 17 second-half points from Stephen Curry and beat Sacramento at the Golden 1 Center.

Curry finished with 30 and Kevin Durant added 28 as Golden State avoided back-to-back losses. The Warriors have played 124 straight contests without losing consecutively, the longest streak in NBA history. Klay Thompson finished with 18 points, and Zaza Pachulia scored 10, and the Warriors beat the Kings for the 13th straight time. Draymond Green contributed nine points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

Rudy Gay, playing in only his second game since missing nine of 10 because of a hip flexor, scored a game-high 23 points for Sacramento, but the Kings lost the first three on a season-high seven-game homestand, and welcome defending champion Cleveland on Friday.

Rockets 129, Raptors 122

TORONTO -- James Harden scored 40 points and added 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his 10th triple-double of the season and Houston came back to defeat Toronto to extend 9ts winning streak to eight games.

Harden has had at least a double-double in 17 straight games. Montrezl Harrell scored 28 points and Eric Gordon added 19 -- both off the bench -- and Trevor Ariza had 17 points for Houston.

DeMar DeRozan led Toronto with 36 points and DeMarre Carroll added 26. Kyle Lowry scored 12 and Norman Powell and Cory Joseph had 10 each for the Raptors, who have lost two in a row.

Grizzlies 88, Jazz 79

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Point guard Mike Conley scored 19 points with nine assists and Memphis held off Utah at FedExForum.

Power forward Zach Randolph gave Memphis a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Marc Gasol (17 points) hit three free throws to hike the lead to 85-77 and Utah never drew closer than six points.

The Jazz committed 18 turnovers that Memphis turned into 26 points. Forward Gordon Hayward led the Jazz with 22 points and forward Trey Lyles chipped in 11 points off the bench.

Pistons 125, Trail Blazers 124 (2OT)

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Kentavious Caldwell-Pope's 3-pointer with 9.4 seconds left in double overtime lifted Detroit over Portland Trail at Moda Center.

Reggie Jackson scored 31 points, Andre Drummond contributed 28 points and 14 rebounds, and Caldwell-Pope added 26 points for the Pistons. Detroit, which edged the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday, won consecutive games for the first time in more than a month.

CJ McCollum scored 35 points, Allen Crabbe came off the bench for a career-high 30 points and Damian Lillard collected 20 points and nine rebounds for the Trail Blazers.

Lakers 111, Magic 85

LOS ANGELES -- Julius Randle scored 19 points and D'Angelo Russell and Brandon Ingram contributed 17 apiece as Los Angeles beat Orlando at Staples Center.

Timofey Mozgov collected 15 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, winners of three of their last four games. Los Angeles forward Luol Deng had 11 points.

Evan Fournier, Serge Ibaka and Nikola Vucevic paced the Magic with 19 points each. Ibaka also grabbed 10 rebounds while Bismark Biyombo had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Orlando, which has lost five of its last six contests.

76ers 105, Nets 95

NEW YORK -- Rookie Joel Embiid scored 20 points in 24 minutes as Philadelphia rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit and matched its win total from last season with a victory over Brooklyn .

Dario Saric also scored 18 and came within three of his career high as the Sixers won for the third time in four games and improved to 6-8 in their last 14 games. Robert Covington overcame getting poked in the eye twice and added 15 while Ersan Ilyasova contributed 14 as Philadelphia won despite shooting 39.4 percent.

Brook Lopez ended a streak of four straight games under 20 points and scored 26 points, but only eight were after halftime when the Nets. Justin Hamilton added 14 and Bojan Bogdanovic had 14 and eight as the Nets committed 22 turnovers and dropped their sixth straight.

Wizards 107, Bucks 101

MILWAUKEE -- Jabari Parker scored 28 points and Malcom Brogdon added a career-high 22 but it wasn't enough for Milwaukee to overcome Bradley Beal and John Wall, who combined for 42 to lead Washington to victory.

Beal scored 27 while Wall added 16 for the Wizards, who also got 20 from Markieff Moriss and 17 from Kelly Oubre, Jr. Washington shot 48.8 percent from the floor and knocked down 10 of 32 3-pointers.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee's leader in every major statistical category, was a late scratch due to illness so Mirza Teletovic got the start in his place while Michael Beasley and veteran Jason Terry also saw extended action.

Clippers 98, Heat 86

LOS ANGELES -- J.J. Redick scored 25 points, and Los Angeles coasted over shorthanded Miami at Staples Center

Chris Paul added 19 points, 18 assists and six rebounds for the Clippers, who won their fourth in a row. The number of assists allowed Paul to top 8,000 career assists. Paul now has 8,012. Marreese Speights delivered 19 points off the bench for Los Angeles. Brandon Bass contributed 12 points.

Goran Dragic led the Heat with 24 points. Hassan Whiteside, who returned after missing four games with a right retinal contusion, chipped in 15 points and 13 rebounds for Miami. Miami's Tyler Johnson and James Johnson scored 12 points apiece.

Monday’s six-pack

— Jason Day signed a deal with Nike, reportedly worth $10M a year, just for apparel and shoes. Nike is out of the equipment business. Day uses TaylorMade clubs.

— Richmond 77, George Washington 70— Spiders are 3-0 in Atlantic 14.

— Northwestern 74, Nebraska 66— Will Wildcats make NCAAs for first time?

— Purdue 64, Wisconsin 55— First conference loss of the year for the Badgers.

— Dabo Swinney is the 5th Alabama alum to become Clemson’s football coach.

— Next weekend’s NFL schedule: Saturday: Seahawks-Falcons and Texans-Patriots. Sunday will be Steelers-Chiefs and Packers-Cowboys.

Quote of the Day

“Coach Dykes clearly built up our program — both on the field and in the classroom — and he leaves Cal in a stronger position than when he arrived. For that alone, he deserves credit and our thanks. After our bowl win last season, we showed our commitment to him with a contract extension. But after looking at a number of factors after the end of this season, I felt that we needed a change of direction for the good of our student-athletes and our program.

“We’re not connecting this in any way to on-field performance. I’m very pleased with what Sonny has done with the culture of the football program and with the academic performance of our student-athletes.”
Cal athletic director Mike Williams, on the odd firing of football coach Sonny Dykes

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) Cal Bears fired football coach Sonny Dykes Sunday, a very odd time for this to happen, setting the Interweb on fire with rumors that Chip Kelly will be coming to Berkeley.

Dykes gets roughly $3.5M to take a hike and shouldn’t be out of work for too long, if he doesn’t want to be. He would be an interesting guy to listen to on TV, seeing how his one winning season in his four years at Cal led to Jared Goff being drafted by the Rams.

12) Odd/surprising Fact of the Day: When the undefeated Dolphins beat Pittsburgh in the 1972 AFC title game, they had to do it in Three Rivers Stadium. How does an undefeated team have to go on the road for a conference championship game?????

11) When the Raiders drafted kicker/punter Janikowski/Lechler in the 4th/5th rounds of the 2000 Draft, they twice passed on Tom Brady. Oakland didn’t have a 6th round pick, which is where New England drafted Brady, 30 picks after the Saints took Marc Bulger.

10) Stumbled across an odd movie the other night: “Black and White” which had Robert Downey Jr, Claudia Schiffer and Marla Maples (Donald Trump’s ex-wife) in it. Made in 1999, Mike Tyson is also in the movie, as is former NBA star Allan Houston, who had a fairly big role.

I watched a few minutes of the movie and kept thinking “that guy looks like Allan Houston” until I looked it up and indeed, it was him.

9) On the heels of the Nevada-New Mexico game late Saturday, there was another epic comeback Sunday afternoon: Stony Brook outscored Albany 21-0 over the final 5:55 to win, 72-70. Albany is my alma mater, so this is bad news, but better now than in March.

8) Now that Gregg Williams is the new DC in Cleveland, I wonder if he’ll bring his son Blake along to work for him. Blake Williams was with the Rams with his father but got let go when he was DC during his father’s 1-year suspension- apparently the other coaches couldn’t stand him.

Jeff Fisher’s son Brandon (a DB coach) is expected to follow Williams to Cleveland.

7) Division I basketball teams have a scholarship limit of 13; Nevada has a starter injured and also has four transfers sitting out this year, meaning they only have 8 scholarship players right now, though the transfers can at least practice.

6) OK, I was surprised to learn this weekend that dolphins are actually not fish, they are aquatic mammals. I’m thinking I was much smarter as a teenager than I am now.

5) One of my all-time favorite stories is about Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft going to the Soviet Union on business and meeting Vladimir Putin; at some point, Kraft takes his Super Bowl ring off and shows it to Putin, actually handing it to him.

Putin takes the ring, puts it in his pocket and stalks off, with his henchmen protecting him. Kraft never saw the ring again— ha!!!!

Apparently Kraft appealed to the Obama administration to try and get the ring back, to which they replied, “Let it go.” Somehow, I’m sure he’ll blame that on Roger Goodell, too.

4) Baseball trivia: Padres’ lefty Brad Hand pitched on consecutive days 29 times last year, most of any big league pitcher. To me, the number is more interesting than who did it.

3) Steelers 30, Dolphins 12— Coaching malpractice 101— This game was over long before it actually ended, but Roethlisberger stayed in till the finish and took a big shot with 4:23 left and Steelers up 30-12. He was in a walking boot after the game. Why is he passing with an 18-point lead and 4:23 left???? Brilliant!!!!

2) Packers 38, Giants 13— Coaching malpractice 102— Green Bay is up 14-6 late in third quarter and gets stuffed on consecutive running plays, giving them 4th-and-1 around their own 40. With Vince Lombardi turning over in his grave, they went for it and didn’t make it. Giants scored a TD a few plays later to cut the lead to 14-13. This was really an amateurish decision.

Packers played really well after the Giants’ TD and won going away, but you have to wonder when the most important person in a $1B business makes a decision like that one.

1— Monday is Bart Starr’s 83rd birthday. Winning QB in the first two Super Bowls, he ruined my 8th birthday by beating the Rams in a divisional playoff game. Happy birthday anyway.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) Clemson 35, Alabama 31— One of greatest college football games ever. Some quick thoughts:
— Clemson ran 98 plays from scrimmage, had 31 first downs. Against Alabama.
— Crimson Tide was just 2-15 on third down. Hard to win with a freshman QB, even if he is a really good freshman.
— Deshaun Watson threw for 420 yards; he threw for 405 vs Alabama LY. Can’t wait to see where he gets drafted in the NFL.
— Alabama led 24-14 after the third quarter; at that point, no one thought they were losing.
— I had great fun watching ESPNews, with six D-I coaches and Brian Griese watching the game. Three of the six happen to be ACC coaches. It was excellent TV.
— Boston College coach Steve Addazio was good in studio but he didn’t know the clock doesn’t run during a PAT, which seems strange.
— BYU coach Kilani Sitake had the line of the night, when coaches were busting his chops about his players going on Mormon missions: “If it was a great system to develop athletes, Alabama would be doing it.”
— Clemson’s last national title was in 1981; their coach then was Danny Ford, who just like Dabo Swinney, is an Alabama graduate.

12) This past weekend was first time in 15+ years that all four home favorites won/covered in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs. All four favorites covered in 2012, but Seattle was a road favorite in Washington that year.

11) DeMarcus Cousins is a really good player, but has anger management issues; he already has 10 technical fouls this year. When he gets to 16, it is an automatic one-game suspension.

10) Valparaiso 81, Detroit 74— This game was Sunday; Crusaders were 33-42 on the foul line, the visiting Titans 4-9. In a 7-point game. Detroit got hosed.

9) Clippers/Lakers both played at home Sunday at Staples Center, the Clippers against Miami in the afternoon, Lakers against Orlando at night. Wonder how many people were at both games?

8) Over last three years, #1 seeds are 6-0SU in the divisional round (3-3 vs spread). Over last five years, underdogs are 11-7-1 vs spread in all games of the divisional round- 49ers-Panthers game was a pick ‘em in 2013.

7) Jacksonville promoted interim coach Doug Marrone to head coach, hired Tom Coughlin as an executive, and gave their GM a 2-year contract extension.

6) Branden Grace finished last at the SBS Tournament of Champions this weekend at Kapalua; he cashed a check for $61,000. Winning a PGA Tour event has many bonuses, this being one of them, a spot in the TOC that guarantees you a nice check for the next year.

5) I’d like to see an NBA team skip having gameday walk-thrus, see if it helped keep players fresher, both mentally/physically. Walk-thrus became a thing in the 70’s. Just wondering if the game would be crisper if players were only in the gym once a day on game day.

4) Minnesota Vikings fired QB coach Scott Turner, who is Norv Turner’s son. Norv may have to take another OC job in order to get his son another job.

3) Wake Forest has lost 25 ACC road games in a row. No bueno.

2) Georgetown 83, St John’s 55— Red Storm are impossible to handicap; they get crushed in this game, after they won by 33 at Syracuse, and upset Butler. Hoyas won by 28, didn’t appear to play that well.

1— Pelicans 110, Knicks 96— So you want to be an NBA coach? Derrick Rose was a no-show and didn’t call; he had Knick officials concerned enough that they checked his apartment. Apparently he had a family issue and went back to Chicago.

I hope Rose and his family/friends are all healthy.

That said, Derrick Rose is making $21,323,250 this year, or $260,039.63 per game. In this day and age, if you cannot text/call a teammate, coach or the GM when you’re going to miss a game, then you shouldn’t be paid for that game. Its not that hard.

Quote of the Day

“I mean, I don’t really want to talk too much about it because I don’t really know what the situation is,. Obviously Derrick is one of our better players. And when he is not here it is tough. But I am just happy that everything is OK with him.”
Joakim Noah, on Derrick Rose’s absence Monday night

Game of the Night - Cleveland at Utah (Fox Sports Ohio, 9:05 ET)
The days where it looked like Kevin Love was an undersized spare tire that didn’t fit on Cleveland’s fancy SUV are long gone. After averaging just over 16 points and less than 10 rebounds during the last two seasons, he’s back up at 21.8 points and 10.9 rebounds, numbers he’d regularly surpass as a one-man band in Minnesota but didn’t seem likely to approach as the third man on the Cavs’ pecking order.

Love is shooting just under 40 percent from 3-point range and is on pace to knock down exactly 200 3-pointers for the first time in his career. Although he’s often camped out on the perimeter to provide spacing for LeBron James and Kyrie Irving to do their thing, Love has become more assertive in picking his spots and has played with more energy as he’s grown more comfortable.

In Sunday night’s 120-116 win in Phoenix, James, Irving and Love each scored 25 or more points, marking just the third time since they were brought together in 2014 that they’ve managed that feat. It was by no means a perfect effort since the Suns rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter despite trailing 69-53 at the break, but James made a couple of huge 3-pointers and Cleveland walked away victorious despite allowing Phoenix to go 16-for-22 from the field without a single turnover in the third quarter.

Some Suns were very annoyed that many fans showed up just to cheer the defending champs since a crowd featuring the likes of Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps and Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald made the game a local event, but that’s to be expected. Throughout history, all great teams take their show on the road, and James has had lots of practice performing in front of sold-out opposing arenas.

Cleveland takes the court in Salt Lake City sporting a 10-5 road record, the top mark in the Eastern Conference. The Cavs trail San Antonio (17-3), Golden State (16-3) and Houston (15-6), but have a chance to put a dent in that edge since 11 of the next 18 between now and the All-Star break will be played away from home.

Despite their success and a 3-1 record in 2017, Cleveland has yet to cover in the new year, losing outright at home against Chicago while failing to cover at home against New Orleans and in road wins at Brooklyn and Phoenix. The Cavs are just 6-9 against the number on the road this season and have only been an underdog on four occasions, losing three of those outright. They opened as 2.5-point favorites against the Jazz and should be favored on every stop on the trip until they get to Monday’s Martin Luther King Day clash at Golden State. The only caveat would be if their All-Stars take the night off in Portland on Wednesday since it’s the second night of a back-to-back, but it would be unlikely that Love would sit in his one appearance in his hometown.

The Cavs will be facing the Jazz for the first time all season, which will leave only the Spurs, Thunder, Timberwolves, Kings and Nuggets as teams they haven’t run into yet. They’ll play at Sacramento on Friday.

Utah won the only meeting in Salt Lake City last season, 94-85 on March 14 and have beaten James twice at home since he returned to Cleveland after his four-year stint in Miami. Overall, the Cavs have won five of seven in the series, but have had their hands full with the size of Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors inside.

James will have to contend with wings Gordon Hayward and Derrick Hood, smaller players he should be able to post and burst by off the dribble, so he could have another big night after scoring 28 in Phoenix. It remains to be seen whether DeAndre Liggins will remain in Cleveland’s starting lineup, but the newly acquired Kyle Korver should be active for the first time and may replace him at shooting guard, providing another lethal offensive weapon who can spread the floor. Korver spent the better part of three seasons in Utah from 2007-10 and set an NBA record by shooting 53.6 percent from 3-point range in ’09-’10. He was acquired for Mike Dunleavy, Mo Williams and a first-round pick over the weekend but couldn’t play against the Suns because Dunleavy had yet to report to Atlanta.

The Jazz will be playing at home for the first time in ’17, having wrapped up a 2-3 road trip with an 88-79 loss in Memphis on Sunday. They did get point guard George Hill back from concussion protocol over the weekend and have been a much better team with him in the lineup, going 9-4 with him at the point and 12-12 in his absence. Utah hasn’t beaten a team with a winning record since Dec. 18, losing their last five games against strong opponents. The ‘under’ has prevailed in 13 of their last 16 games and each of the last five times the total has been over 200. Tonight’s number is set at 202.

Notable Head-to-Head Trends

-- Chicago and Washington havs split their last six meetings, including the two they've played against one another this season. Dwyane Wade is getting the night off, while Jimmy Butler will look to bounce back from a flu bug that limited him to just one point in nearly 29 minutes in last night's home loss to Oklahoma City and has him considered 'doubtful' to play here.

-- A four-game winning streak has helped the Celtics pull within one game of the Raptors in the Atlantic Division, but they'll be without guard Avery Bradley in Toronto. The Raptors won this seaon's only meeting in Boston on Dec. 9 and have won four of five in the series, but it runs up against a sizzling Isaiah Thomas, who is averaging 34.8 points over his last five games.

-- The Hawks have the East's longest win streak, looking to earn their seventh straight victory against a Brooklyn squad that owns the NBA's worst record and longest losing streak (6). This will be the first game Atlanta is playing since the front office announced it is no longer interested in moving All-Star forward Paul Millsap. The Hawks have won their last four games as a favorite.

-- Charlotte had lost 10 consecutive meetings against the Rockets prior to a 125-109 home win last March. Mike D'Antoni's team is looking for an NBA-best ninth straight victory and haven't lost to Charlotte at home since 2005, a run off 11 consecutive games. Nicolas Batum remains out with a hyperextended knee, but Rockets guard Eric Gordon, the league's leader in made 3-pointers, is questionable with a toe injury.

-- The Bucks get Giannis Antetokounmpo back after an illness kept him out of Sunday's 107-101 home loss to Washington. The Spurs have won nine straight in the series and haven't lost to Milwaukee in San Antonio since Dec. 30, 2008. The Spurs won the only meeting this season 97-96 on Dec. 5.

-- The Lakers have lost nine consecutive games at the hands of the Trail Blazers and haven't beaten them at Staples since 2013, losing their last five.

-- Golden State hasn't lost to Miami since LeBron left town, winning the last four encounters. Miami has been banged up on its road trip, but should have center Hassan Whiteside and point guard Goran Dragic available.

-- Detroit has won six of seven against the Kings, but split last season's meetings, losing in Sacramento. DeMarcus Cousins against Andre Drummond should be worth the price of admission.

TORONTO (AP) DeMar DeRozan scored a season-high 41 points, Kyle Lowry had 24 and the Toronto Raptors rallied to end the Boston Celtics' four-game winning streak with a 114-106 victory Tuesday night.

DeRozan added 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, and Jonas Valanciunas had 18 points and a career-high 23 rebounds. The Raptors bounced back after losing to Chicago and Houston last weekend.

Toronto also kept itself above Boston in the Eastern Conference standings. A win would have pulled the Celtics even with the Raptors for second place behind Cleveland.

Isaiah Thomas had 27 points and Marcus Smart scored 16 for the Celtics.

Boston pulled in front with 3:54 left in the second quarter and led until Lowry's 3-pointer with 2:41 remaining in the game. With 5:05 to play, Boston was ahead 102-95, but the Raptors closed on a 19-4 run to clinch the victory, their second of the season over Boston.

ROCKETS 121, HORNETS 114

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden had 40 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists for his second consecutive triple-double, and Houston outlasted Charlotte for its ninth straight win.

The Rockets missed 10 shots in a row and let an 18-point lead evaporate before coach Mike D'Antoni called a timeout with 2:26 left. Ryan Anderson made Houston's first shot in more than four minutes with a 3-pointer out of the timeout, and after a block on the other end, Harden's layup put Houston up 115-111 with just over a minute to play.

Kemba Walker cut the deficit to one with a 3-pointer, but another layup by Harden made it 117-114 with 28.6 seconds left. Charlotte missed three 3-point tries in the final seconds.

Harden got his 11th triple-double this season and the 20th of his career. He had 40 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds Sunday against Toronto, making him the fourth player in NBA history with at least 40 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in consecutive games.

Walker had 25 points for the Hornets, who dropped their third straight.

JAZZ 100, CAVS 92

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gordon Hayward went toe-to-toe with LeBron James in the second half to help Utah beat Cleveland.

Hayward had 28 points and went back and forth with James during a decisive third quarter. James brought the Cavaliers back from a 15-point halftime deficit before Hayward drove the lead back to 14.

Trey Lyles scored eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the fourth quarter to help the Jazz hold on.

Rudy Gobert had 11 points and 14 rebounds for Utah.

James finished with 29 points and Kyrie Irving added 20 for the defending champs. Kyle Korver had two points and three rebounds in 17 minutes during his Cleveland debut.

WIZARDS 101, BULLS 99

WASHINGTON (AP) - John Wall scored 26 points, including a game-winning baseline jumper with 5.9 seconds left, and added 14 assists as Washington moved above .500 by defeating Chicago.

Marcin Gortat had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Washington (19-18). He also set the screen that freed up Wall for his tiebreaking jumper to seal a 10th straight home win.

Markieff Morris and Bradley Beal each scored 19 points for the Wizards, who completed their biggest comeback victory of the season after trailing by 18 in the second quarter.

Washington is above .500 for the first time since it was 6-5 last season on Nov. 24, 2015.

Denzel Valentine set career highs by scoring 19 points and making five 3-pointers for the short-handed Bulls, who led by seven in the fourth quarter.

Rajon Rondo added 12 points in his first game since Dec. 30.

Chicago was without leading scorers Jimmy Butler (ill) and Dwyane Wade (resting). Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic also sat out with an illness.

Wall hit a pull-up that tied it at 99 with 47.4 seconds to play.

BUCKS 109, SPURS 107

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Michael Beasley scored a season-high 28 points in place of an ill Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Milwaukee rallied to beat San Antonio.

Kawhi Leonard had 30 points for the Spurs, who had their nine-game home winning streak snapped.

Jabari Parker's layup with 2:56 remaining gave Milwaukee a 103-101 lead, its first since the 3:24 mark of the first quarter. Moments later, rookie Malcolm Brogdon hit a 3-pointer to give the Bucks a 108-107 edge. Brogdon sank one of two free throws with 6.7 seconds to go, and Manu Ginobili's 3-pointer hit the side of the backboard at the buzzer.

Antetokounmpo, who missed Milwaukee's previous game, started despite having a fever at morning shootaround. He was scoreless for the first time this season, missing his only three attempts in nine minutes.

Beasley responded with 22 points in the second half.

Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge was sidelined with a stomach virus.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

13) Milwaukee Bucks came into the NBA in 1968; they went 27-55 in their first season, but 56-26 in their second season, then 68-16 with an NBA title in their third season.

This is fairly graphic evidence that Kareem Adbul-Jabbar is the greatest basketball player ever; they won a coin flip with the Phoenix Suns for the top pick in the ’69 draft and the right to select Kareem. Add in his 88-2 record as a college player, and you get the point.

They outlawed the dunk in college basketball because of Kareem.

No one dominated the sport like Abdul-Jabbar did, but because he has a surly personality, doesn’t do a lot of commercials, he fell out of public consciousness, unlike Michael Jordan, whose Jordan Brand shoes/apparel is still a huge money maker for Nike.

Then there is this: freshmen were ineligible to play college ball back then. UCLA won the national title when Kareem was a senior in high school— his freshman team beat the UCLA varsity by 20 that year, and the UCLA varsity was the defending national champs.

12) Underdogs were 25-15-1 vs spread in bowl games this season.

11) ACC went 9-3 in bowl games; they were underdog in seven of the 12 games.

10) Alabama RB Josh Scarbrough broke his leg in Monday night’s game, which no doubt will be brought up next year if/when a running back sits out a bowl game to keep himself healthy for the NFL Draft.

9) Wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if college football scrapped the rule that says the clock stops after every first down. National title game took over four hours to play and ratings were a bit down, even though it was a great game. Knee-jerk reaction will be to shorten games.

My theory on the ratings being down? Two teams from the south played; people in other regions of the country aren’t as interested if their teams aren’t playing.

8) College football coaches don’t go on vacation now that the games are over; National Signing Day is February 1, three weeks from today, so coaches will be working their butts off on the phone between now and then, recruiting players who will win games down the road.

Games that will be played from 2018-2021 will be partially determined by who signs where on February 1st. Football recruiting is a big. big business.

7) Giants’ DE Jason Pierre-Paul says he won’t sign a 1-year contract next season; what happens if no one offers him a multi-year deal? Will he retire?

6) March is going to feel a little different this year; the ACC tournament is in Brooklyn, for some reason. The Big 14 tourney is in Washington DC because of Maryland being in the league, but it doesn’t make much sense. Big 14 should have their tournament in the midwest; the ACC tourney should be somewhere on Tobacco Road.

5) I worked for New York State for 34 years in a mundane office job; if I needed a day off that I hadn’t asked for previously, had to call in sick and tell a person in charge that I wasn’t coming in that day. Failure to do so meant you went LWOP (Leave With-Out Pay), meaning there would be no pay for that day— I never did that once in 34 years.

My job wasn’t very important, certainly not as critical to my agency as a point guard is to an NBA team. Derrick Rose didn’t bother to call/text the Knicks Monday, when he flew to Chicago and missed their game; when they called him, he couldn’t be bothered to answer the phone.

I’m very curious how much the team fined him, but no one is saying. Rose makes a little over $260,000 PER GAME- he is a free agent this summer. I’m curious where he’ll wind up.

4) Quick work-related story from my mediocre career with New York State- this happened back in the late 80’s. I was 28 or 29 at the time.

In mid-afternoon on a Thursday, this is in mid-October, my boss’ boss calls me into her office. She was kind of a stern woman, we had very little interaction, but she had a job for me to do.

“We need a World Series pool and I want you to run it. You think you can do that?”

I’m trying not to laugh as I sat there, but quickly agreed and went about my duty and we had a good World Series pool that year. Sometimes, working for the government was fun.

3) Tuesday’s college hoop:
— West Virginia 89, Baylor 68— Bears lasted one day at #1- they had 29 turnovers.
— Villanova 79, Xavier 54— Surprisingly easy win for the Wildcats.
— Kentucky 87, Vanderbilt 81— Commodores had their chances in last minute.
— Florida State 88, Duke 72– Seminoles are 4-0 in ACC for first time.

2) Oakland Raiders let OC Bill Musgrave walk after his contract expired, promoted QB coach Todd Dowling to OC, telling the world they think Dowling was more responsible for Derek Carr’s improved play than Musgrave was. Interesting decision.

1— Remember Warrick Dunn, the running back for the Buccaneers? His mom was a police officer who was killed in the line of duty, when Dunn was 18. He used her life insurance to buy a house for himself and four younger siblings- there was no father in the picture.

After Dunn became an NFL player, he started a charity that has put 152 families into affordable homes, just great work. If there was a People Hall of Fame, Dunn would be in it.

Back in 2006, one of the families Dunn’s charity gave a home to was Clemson QB Deshaun Watson’s family.
