NBA roundup: Wizards overcome 21-point deficit to win

WASHINGTON -- Guard John Wall had 31 points and outdueled his former University of Kentucky teammate DeMarcus Cousins as the Washington Wizards rallied from a 21-point deficit in the second half for a 113-97 win over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night.

Wall had 20 points and 10 of his 12 assists in the second half for the Wizards, who outscored the Kings 67-33 in the second half. Forward Paul Pierce scored 17 points and swingman Rasual Butler added 14.

Washington has won three straight games and five of seven after losing six straight and 11 of 13.

Cousins led the Kings with 30 points, but the center went scoreless in the fourth quarter before fouling out as Sacramento blew a double-digit halftime lead for the second straight night. The Kings have lost seven of nine and finished 2-6 on their eight-game road trip.

Jazz 88, Pistons 85

SALT LAKE CITY — Derrick Favors scored a game-high 26 points and Utah Jazz continued its hot streak with a close win over Detroit at EnergySolutions Arena.

The Jazz held off a late Pistons rally to win for a season-high fifth consecutive outing and for the 10th time in 12 games since the All-Star break.

Power forward Greg Monroe led Detroit with 16 points and 13 rebounds, but the Pistons (23-43) fell for the second consecutive night and for the 10th time in a row.

Grizzlies 96, Bucks 83

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- After getting the reboot during the end of a forgettable Eastern road swing, Memphis regained its balance as a team, and rolled to a win over Milwaukee before a sellout crowd of 18,119 at FedEx Forum.

Saturday, a sputtering Grizzlies offense found a modest spark by the end of the first quarter, and by game's end, everybody seemed to get into the act.

All five Grizzlies starters finished in double figures, led by 17 points from struggling shooting guard Courtney Lee and 15 each from forwards Jeff Green and Zach Randolph. Beno Udrih, subbing for Mike Conley (ankle sprain) had 15 points while Marc Gasol had 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists despite missing some of the first half with a knee tweak.

Celtics 93, Pacer 89

INDIANAPOLIS -- Center Tyler Zeller, a Washington, Ind., native, had 18 points and seven rebounds night, leading Boston to victory over Indiana at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The victory was the fourth straight for the Celtics, who got 16 points each from forward Brandon Bass, forward Jae Crowder and guard Avery Bradley. Bass sank two free throws with 5.3 seconds left to ice the game.

Guard George Hill led Indiana with a season-high 30 points to go with five rebounds and eight assists.

Nets 94, 76ers 87

PHILADELPHIA -- Forward Thaddeus Young had 21 points and nine rebounds against his former team as Brooklyn held off Philadelphia, ending a five-game losing streak.

Young, acquired by the Nets Feb. 19 from Minnesota for forward Kevin Garnett, spent his first seven NBA seasons with Philadelphia. He had the highest point total of his 12-game tenure with Brooklyn, and capped a 6-0 run late in the game with a hook shot, after the Sixers cut an 11-point deficit to two, 87-85.

Guard Joe Johnson added 15 points for Brooklyn, which began the night 3 1/2 games behind Charlotte for the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff spot.

Warriors 125, Knicks 94

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stephen Curry bombed in three 3-pointers in the final 1:44 of the first half, capping a 19-5 flurry that propelled Golden State to a shellacking of the New York Knicks.

In completing a season-series sweep of two games with the Knicks, the Warriors posted their third-largest victory margin of the year while extending their home winning streak to a season-best seven games.

The 31-point losing margin was the Knicks' second-highest of the year, topped only by their 124-86 home loss to Sacramento earlier this month.

Full of energy for his 27th birthday after having been given the night off during Friday's 114-103 loss at Denver, Curry was 6 of 10 from beyond the 3-point arc and 8 of 15 overall in a 25-point performance, his eighth consecutive 20-plus scoring effort against the Knicks.

Celtics cashing during playoff drive

The Boston Celtics are doing all they can to get back in the playoff picture in the East and their backers are benefiting.

With their 93-89 win over the Indiana Pacers as 8.5-point dogs Saturday night, the Celtics are 9-2-1 against the spread in their last 12 games.

Boston, who is 9-3 straight up in those games, will try to stay hot when they host the Philadelphia 76ers Monday.

Steve Kerr responds to frustrated fans

March 14, 2015

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Steve Kerr took time to email back three disappointed fans who were upset the Golden State coach rested his regulars Friday night at Denver before playing Saturday at home against New York.

''There's two really good sides to the story,'' Kerr said. ''Nobody's wrong here. ... I can't argue with them.''

One of the emails Kerr received was from a family that drove from South Dakota to the Mile High City with high hopes of seeing All-Stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson lead the Western Conference's top team. Instead, those two rested along with center Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala.

Kerr also received a ''couple of catcalls, a couple boos during the introductions'' from the stands. He hadn't heard anything from the league about his decision Saturday, when Golden State played its fifth game in seven days, with two of those having been away.

''I heard from some fans. I received a few emails, stories about driving in from a long distance off and spending a lot of money on tickets,'' Kerr said. ''I have great sympathy for those people. I really do. It's a tricky one. It's something that I think Adam Silver is trying to address through the scheduling shuffling that he's talking about.

''Its' real important, because our fans deserve to see the best product out there. If somebody spends a lot of money, they deserve to see the best players, the guy that they came to see. On the other hand, as coaches we have to do what's best to prepare our teams for a really long year.''

Kerr still would prefer to start the season 10-12 days early around Oct. 20, cutting down on the eight preseason games and month of training camp. He also noted that in every other sport, players get days off.

Golden State had its five-game winning streak snapped in the 114-103 loss to the Nuggets, then returned home to begin a six-game stretch at Oracle Arena. Even Denver heard from angry fans on Twitter, such as one father who rented a suite for his son's birthday because the boy loved Curry and Co. By the second half, he had turned his attention to cheering for the Nuggets.

Kerr - who noted the rest was as much mental as physical - made a point to respond to the fans via email, and one who received a nice note got back in touch with the Warriors to let them know how surprised and appreciative he was to hear from the first-year coach.

''He's great. He's very engaging. He's a normal guy,'' Bogut said of Kerr's gesture. ''We're definitely not used to that in a head coach.''

Bogut understands that kids might have one chance - one ticket all season - to see an NBA game live and that they'd want to see the best matchups.

But Kerr is preparing his team to be fresh come playoff time for what the franchise hopes is a deep run.

''It's tough, if I was a kid and had one ticket to go to and guys rested,'' Bogut said. ''It's just a part of the grueling NBA season. It's unfortunate for the fans who were a little (ticked) off by it, but we have aspirations to go deep in the playoffs and to get to the end, we have to do what's best for our side.''

Game of the Day: Cavaliers at Heat
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Miami Heat (+5.5, 204.5)

LeBron James makes his second visit to Miami this season and hopes to leave with a win this time when the Cleveland Cavaliers play the Heat on Monday. James spent four seasons with Miami and won two championships before rejoining the Cavaliers, and his first trip back to South Beach was a 101-91 loss on Christmas Day. Cleveland has won four straight games and is in second place by three games in the Eastern Conference after posting a 123-108 victory over the Orlando Magic on Sunday.

Miami guard Dwyane Wade is well aware it is a big deal for James to get a victory this time around after failing in December’s highly anticipated game. “Wherever LeBron goes, the attention goes with him,” Wade told reporters of James, who tweaked his right knee during the win over Orlando. “The excitement of beating his teams is always going to be there. So yeah, it will be a great environment again.” The Heat are tied for ninth place in the East, a half-game behind the Charlotte Hornets, as part of a pack that includes four teams.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Ohio (Cleveland), Sun Sports (Miami)

LINE HISTORY: Oddsmakers opened the Cavs as 5.5-point road faves and the total at 204.

INJURY REPORT: Cavs - F Kevin Love (Probable, back), F Shawn Marion (Probable, hip), F LeBron James (Questionable, knee), C Anderson Varejao (Out for season, Achilles). Heat - F Udonis Haslem (Questionable, ankle), C Chris Bosh (Out for season, lung), F Josh McRoberts (Out for season, knee).

POWER RANKINGS: Cavs (-9.5) + Heat (-2.5) + home court (-3.0) = Heat +4.0

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (43-25 SU, 34-34 ATS, 26-41-1 O/U): Point guard Kyrie Irving was at it again in the victory over Orlando as he scored 33 points and went 5-of-6 from 3-point range. Irving scored a career-best 57 points – the most in the NBA this season – in Thursday’s overtime win over San Antonio and was able to produce a good follow-up performance. “Someone did ask me, ‘What do you do for an encore for that?’ and I didn’t have a good answer,” Cleveland coach David Blatt told reporters. “But 12-for-15 from the field, 33 points in 34 minutes, that’s a pretty good encore.”

ABOUT THE HEAT (29-36 SU, 28-33-4 ATS, 28-37 O/U): Point guard Goran Dragic may be a recent addition to Miami but he has grown frustrated by the team’s up-and-down nature. “We needed to come out and show we can play against (good) teams,” Dragic told reporters. “It’s kind of hot and cold. We win one, we lose one. We need to be more consistent.” Dragic is averaging 16.4 points and 4.9 assists in 10 games since being acquired from the Phoenix Suns.

TRENDS:

*Cavaliers are 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings in Miami.
*Heat are 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
*Cavaliers are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games overall.
*Heat are 8-17-3 ATS in their last 28 home games.

CONSENSUS: According to Consensus, 78 percent of bettors are backing the Cavs.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Heat 106, Cavaliers 92-- Four teams are tied for last two playoff spots in East.

-- Celtics 108, 76ers 89-- Boston won nine of its last 12 games.

-- NJIT 84, New Hempshire 77-- America East won't take NJIT as a member.

-- Why wouldn't Jameis Winston go to the NFL Draft? He is an unusual guy.

-- Pete Rose applied for reinstatement to baseball; come on Commish, let him back in. Think of the positive press it'll generate and it'll help Cooperstown.

-- Georgia Tech, UNLV decided to keep their hoop coaches for next year, which is a nice way of saying they didn't want to write big checks to buy them out.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Kevin Pillar is an outfielder for Blue Jays; he is out for 7-10 days after pulling an oblique muscle.........while sneezing. I kid you not.

12) Colorado is still playing basketball, they're in the CBI but their best player Askia Booker decided to call it a season and won't play. Not sure if Spencer Dinwiddie's injury last year had any impact on this decision- that cost Dinwiddie a lot of money when the draft came around, but how do you walk out on your teammates?

11) Oliver Purnell is out after five years coaching DePaul; why can't anyone win with the Blue Demons? They've had the same AD for over a decade; maybe that is the problem. Team in Chicago shouldn't have problems recrutiing good players.

10) Enjoyed watching Cal-Irvine players/coaches celebrating late Saturday night when they won their first Big West title. Lot of times coaches act so cool and unemotional when they win. Too bad; its a great moment in their life-- show some emotion!!!

9) Surprising fact: Duke hasn't won any of the last four ACC tournaments.

8) Cardinal catcher Yadier Molina has lost 25-30 pounds and looks a lot different.

7) Kids should watch Notre Dame play offense and Hawai'i play defense. Rainbows really get after it on defense; its good to see.

6) Eastern Washington guard Tyler Harvey leads the country is scoring; his dad is a D-I ref, working WCC and Big Sky games. Harvey and his friends play Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA tournament this week.

5) David Wright's last home run was July 11. Hard to believe. Michael Cuddyer is on the Mets because he is Wright's friend. Wright chose Cuddyer over Giancarlo Stanton for Home Run Derby couple years ago-- brilliant decision.

4) Catchers must hate spring training; too many pitchers to warm up.

3) RIP Eugene Patton, 82, better known as Gene Gene the Dancing Machine on one of the great TV shows of all-time, the Gong Show. Mr Patton was an NBC stagehand who became slightly famous for his cameo spots dancing as the show went into commercial breaks. If you've never seen the Gong Show, find it on the Internet; great stuff.

2) Watched Good Will Hunting again the other night; still sad to realize that as much joy as Robin Williams brought to other people's lives, he couldn't be happy himself.

1) 45 minutes before brackets are announced Sunday, Alabama announced it fired coach Anthony Grant; 15 minutes later, Charlotte announces it fired Alan Major. Now burying bad news under bigger headlines has become an art form. If Pete Rose ever gets put in the Hall of Fame, there will be a lot of headline burying going on that day.

Pistons' C Andre Drummond, probable Tuesday

Drummond sustained a concussion in the Pistons last game but his status has been changed to probable for Tuesday's game against the Grizzlies.

Over cashes for bettors Monday night

The over was the way to go in the NBA totals market Monday night, posting a 7-3 record.

The over has been hot the past seven days going 33-20 over/under, cashing 62.3 percent of the time. This bucks the trend for the season, with the over cashing just 46.7 percent of the time compared to 53.3 percent for the under.

Celtics continue to cash during playoff push

The Boston Celtics continue to push for a playoff spot, beating the Philadelphia 76ers 108-89 Monday night and their backers are becoming the beneficiaries of the hot play, with the Celtics going 10-2-1 against the spread in their last 13 games.

The Celtics, 10-3 straight up in those 13 games, easily covered the 8.5-points they were favored by over the Sixers. It was their fifth win and cover in a row and now has the Celtics ties for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

Boston will try to keep the hot streak going when they visit the Oklahoma City Thunder Wednesday.

Wizards cashing tickets during win streak

The Washington Wizards extended their winning and cover streak to four straight games by topping the Portland Trail Blazers 105-97 as 1-point home faves Monday night.

Before the streak started the Wizards had failed to cover in nine consecutive games and were one of the worst bets in the NBA at 23-39-1 against the spread.

Washington tries to make it five in a row when they visit the Utah Jazz Wednesday night.

MILWAUKEE BUCKS (34-32) at NEW ORLEANS PELICANS (36-30)

Tip-off: Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: New Orleans -7, Total: 191

Two clubs moving in opposite directions face-off this Tuesday night as the struggling Milwaukee Bucks visit the scorching hot New Orleans Pelicans.

The Bucks have certainly fallen onto hard times of late with a 4-9 SU and ATS record since the All-Star break. In that time their offense has been nearly non-existent as they have hit triple-digits just three times behind a meager 91.0 PPG. Memphis was the latest team to get an easy matchup against this Milwaukee team as the Bucks were getting seven points on the road and couldn’t handle their opponent in a 96-83 loss. They made just 41.7% of their shots in the defeat and let the Grizzlies nail 47.4% of their shots while also getting 10 steals.

It has been a completely different story for New Orleans since the All-Star break as they are 9-4 SU (8-5 ATS) and have been on fire offensively over the past three games with 112.0 PPG. In two of those contests they shot better than 51% as a team and have hit that mark a total of five times in their recent hot stretch. They couldn’t keep their momentum going when they hosted Denver on Sunday though, and lost 118-111 despite being favored by eight points. The Nuggets had just 11 turnovers in the double overtime game and won with an efficient 16-for-20 mark at the free-throw line.

The road hasn’t been great to Milwaukee this year as the team is 16-20 SU, but has been able to keep things close and is a solid 24-12 ATS as it goes up against a Pelicans team which is 22-12 SU (19-14-1 ATS) when in front of their fans.

The first game of this season series between these clubs was just last Monday and New Orleans went on the road and managed a solid 114-103 victory as 1.5-point favorites. Each team caught fire offensively but it was the Pelicans’ amazing 58.7% shooting, including 9-of-15 from behind the arc, which eventually drowned the Bucks.

It really hasn’t been much of a contest for this New Orleans group when facing Milwaukee as it is 7-1 SU (6-1-1 ATS) in the series since the start of the 2010-11 season and has not lost at home in the matchup since March 21st, 2003 (12 games). Trends show that Milwaukee is 10-1 ATS (91%) after two or more consecutive losses this year while the Pelicans are a solid 11-4 ATS (73%) when coming off an upset loss as a home favorite in this campaign.

Part of the Bucks’ struggles have come from injuries as both SF Jared Dudley (Back) and SG O.J. Mayo (Hamstring) are expected to miss this game as PG Michael Carter-Williams (Ankle) and Jerryd Bayless (Ankle) are listed as questionable. Both PF Ryan Anderson (Knee) and PG Jrue Holiday (Ankle) will be absent for New Orleans as well.

The Bucks really don’t have an offense worth getting excited over as they are scoring 97.6 PPG (9th-worst in league) behind 45.9% shooting (7th in league). Where they earn most of their victories is on the defensive side of the ball as they are giving up just 96.8 PPG (5th in league) with opponents making 43.5% of their shots (5th in league).

SG Khris Middleton (12.9 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 1.6 SPG) has carried this team offensively in recent games and has scored 22.4 PPG (49% FG) in the past five contests while making 59% of his three-pointers in that time. One of those performances was against this Pelicans team where he scored 17 points and added little elsewhere.

SF Giannis Antetokounmpo (12.3 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.1 BPG, 1.0 SPG) has also been solid recently with 17.8 PPG over his past four outings and saved his best for his last meeting with New Orleans when he dropped 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting and completed the stat line with five rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals.

PG Michael Carter-Williams (14.9 PPG, 7.1 APG, 5.8 RPG, 1.6 SPG) is dealing with some injuries but indications are that he plays on Tuesday and it will be important that he does since he has put up 25+ points in two of his past three games played. He did so against this Pelicans team, scoring 25 points and adding seven assists with two steals in a losing effort.

New Orleans generally has sat towards the middle of the pack in most statistical categories this year, and its scoring offense (99.9 PPG) has been no different as it hits on 45.8% of its shots (9th in league). The Pelicans have been getting better on defense, though, and on the year are allowing 99.3 PPG (13th in league) with opponents shooting 45.8% from the field (7th-worst in league).

PF Anthony Davis (24.7 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 2.9 BPG, 1.4 SPG) has been a one-man wrecking crew recently with double-doubles in five of his past six games as he averages 30.8 PPG (55% FG), 11.2 RPG and 5.0 BPG over that period. He absolutely destroyed the Bucks last Monday for 43 points on 17-of-23 shooting as he added 10 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and a steal.

SG Tyreke Evans (16.9 PPG, 6.5 APG, 5.3 RPG, 1.2 SPG) missed one game with an ankle injury and returned on Sunday to put up a near triple-double (25 points, 10 assists, 9 rebounds) in the loss to Denver. He didn’t need to do much against Milwaukee in the win last week, going an efficient 6-for-10 from the field with 13 points and six assists.

SG Eric Gordon (13.4 PPG, 3.9 APG) has scored exactly 16 points in each of his past four performances and has shot an impressive 49% from three-point range in that time. His 16 points to go with two steals certainly helped the Pelicans to a win against the Bucks in their last meeting.

CHARLOTTE HORNETS (29-36) at LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (42-25)

Tip-off: Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Los Angeles -10, Total: 200.5

The Hornets and Clippers will both be looking to get back into the win column when the teams meet in Los Angeles Tuesday.

The Hornets were absolutely embarrassed in Utah on Monday, losing 94-66 as 4-point underdogs. Charlotte has now lost three of its past four games both SU and ATS, scoring less than 70 points in two of those contests. The Clippers lost 100-98 as 5-point home favorites against the Rockets on Sunday. Los Angeles has now lost two straight games both SU and ATS, allowing 114.5 PPG in those defeats.

These teams met in Charlotte earlier in the season and the Clippers won 113-92 as 3.5-point road favorites. Since 1996, the Clippers are 7-2 SU when hosting the Hornets but they are just 4-5 ATS in those games. They have won-and-covered in the past three games that they’ve played against the Hornets at Staples Center.

The Hornets are 23-12 ATS in road games after one or more consecutive losses over the past two seasons. They are also 31-18 ATS after having lost two of their past three games in that time. Fortunately for the Clippers, this same Charlotte team is just 30-53 ATS in non-conference games over the past three seasons. C Cody Zeller (Shoulder) is doubtful for this game and C Al Jefferson (Calf) is expected to play. F Jordan Hamilton (Ankle) is doubtful for the Clippers, who will be without G Jamal Crawford (Calf) indefinitely.

The Hornets were dismantled by the Jazz on Monday night and they will need to turn things around quickly. One player who must step his game up for the team is C Al Jefferson (17.1 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 1.3 BPG). Jefferson is going to come into this one with a banged up calf, but he will need to find a way to push through it. His matchup with DeAndre Jordan will come a long way in determining the outcome of this game and the Hornets need Jefferson to knock down some shots inside.

G Mo Williams (14.0 PPG, 6.6 APG) played very poorly against Utah, finishing with just seven points and three assists in 24 minutes. Williams had scored 18+ points in five straight games before that stinker in Utah. He is an excellent outside shooter (35% 3PT) and will need to get back on track against the Clippers.

PG Kemba Walker (18.0 PPG, 5.2 APG, 3.7 RPG, 1.3 SPG) is still getting his legs back after returning from a knee injury on Mar. 11 against Sacramento. Walker had 15 points, six rebounds, five boards and three steals the last time he faced the Clippers and he could see some extended minutes in this game, as the Hornets will need a player with his speed to stick Chris Paul.

SG Gerald Henderson (11.5 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 2.8 APG) had just four points in 22 minutes against the Jazz Monday. Henderson had averaged 18.5 PPG, 7.0 APG and 6.5 RPG in the previous two games and will need to get back to playing well offensively for the Hornets. He is a very good midrange shooter and rarely takes bad shots.

SF Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (10.9 PPG, 7.5 RPG) must bring his non-stop motor to this game, as he can really change the outcome with his ability to defend and rebound at his position.

The Clippers are coming off of a tough home loss against the Rockets on Sunday and now have a chance to turn it around with a very winnable home game against the Hornets. PG Chris Paul (18.4 PPG, 10.0 APG, 4.7 RPG, 1.9 SPG) lit up the Hornets the last time he played them, scoring 22 points and dishing out 15 assists in 38 minutes of action. He should be able to play extremely well on Tuesday as well, as Mo Williams is a lot slower than he is and Kemba Walker is not playing at full health. The Clippers’ superstar will need to attack the rim and continue to knock down shots from the outside (38% 3PT) when the defense sags off.

SG J.J. Redick (15.3 PPG) has been extremely hot for the Clippers recently, averaging 20.2 PPG, 3.4 APG, 3.0 RPG and 1.2 SPG over the past five games. Redick is a lights-out shooter from behind the arc (42% 3PT) and will need to capitalize on any opportunities the defense gives him on Tuesday. A lot of the Hornets’ focus will be on the Clippers’ frontcourt, so he should have some good looks.

PF Blake Griffin (22.3 PPG, 5.2 APG, 7.6 RPG) returned from his elbow injury against the Rockets. He had not played since Feb. 6, but still finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and a block in 41 minutes of action. Griffin had 22 points, 16 boards and nine assists the last time he faced the Hornets and should really dominate on Tuesday. Charlotte is weak at the power forward position and Griffin’s blend of size and athleticism will be very difficult for the Hornets to match.

C DeAndre Jordan (11.3 PPG, 14.7 RPG, 2.2 BPG) had no problem keeping up his recent stretch of excellent play even with Griffin back in the lineup. Jordan had five points, 20 rebounds and four blocks in 35 minutes against the Rockets. He continues to be a dominant player on the glass and his defense will need to be strong against Al Jefferson.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds on various teams to win the NCAA tournament.........

13-2-- Arizona-- That would make them second favorite, behind Kentucky.

8-1-- Duke-- Two of their four NCAA titles were won in Indianapolis.

13-1-- Gonzaga-- Have never been to the Final Four.

20-1-- Would be great Final Four sleeper, but they're in Kentucky's region.

45-1-- Baylor-- My choice if you were to wager on a longshot.

90-1-- Arkansas-- Another team that would be worth a look at a price.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random stuff from the desert......

13) Ole Miss 92, BYU 90-- Its not the rules of college basketball that need to be fixed; its that more coaches need to have the onions to let their players play. This was one of the best games to watch in NCAA tournament history. BYU was 15-29 from the arc and lost. Ole Miss scored 62 points in the second half.

12) Hampton 74, Manhattan 64-- Pirates took 34 foul shots, only seven 3's and made lot of mid-range jump shots. They controlled this game the whole way and looked like a much better team than their record indicated they were.

11) Murray State 81, UTEP 66-- Step #1 on the Murray State vengeance tour were the Miners, but I think Murray goes to Tulsa next, which will be a tougher game.

10) Alabama 79, Illinois 58-- Credit to the Bama kids for leading 46-22 at halftime after their coach was fired 48 hours earlier. Not much to say for Illinois' effort here.

9) If you're coming to Las Vegas, I highly recommend South Point hotel, which is a few miles from the main strip, but it has a lot of great stuff-- movies, bowling alley, Steak 'n Shake, bingo tournaments (or so I'm told). Sportsbook is open 24 hours a day and they have a great ice cream place near the side door.

8) Klay Thompson is out 7-10 days (ankle) which dampens tonight's game against the Hawks in a battle of NBA titans. Thompson has a brother who is an outfielder with the White Sox; not sure if he'll be in AAA or the majors this season.

7) People bet on exhibition baseball games!!! Why?

6) When you're watching lot of games in the sportsbook, you obviously can't hear most of them, so you notice how much contact these officials are allowing to take place. You see a collision and play goes on when you assume play would stop because of the collision, but officials let lot of stuff go. If you let defenders foul, it is obvious that scores will be lower.

5) Wyoming-Northern Iowa total is 109. I cannot remember a lower total for a college basketball game, at least not since the shot clock came in 30 years ago.

4) There is an advantage to being in these play-in games, as far as recruiting goes. How else would North Florida get two hours on national TV in primetime? Some of these teams agree to play on ESPN at 6am or 8am in November during the tip-off marathon- they will do anything to get on television. Good chance to market their program.

3) Of 68 teams in the NCAA tournament, VCU/Georgetown travelled the longest for this week's games; Dayton obviously traveled the least distance, sonce they're playing at home tonight and then not too far away (Louisville) if they win.

2) Stephen Curry had 13 turnovers in his first college game at Davidson!!!!

1) I'm a big proponent that high schools should teach a basic life skills course to every kid as a mandatory class to take. How to write checks, how to cook, how to manage your time, marriage laws, basic nutrition-- important everyday stuff.
