Game of the Day: Pacers at Heat
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-5, 184)

The two best teams in the Eastern Conference are struggling down the stretch, but one of them moves closer to claiming the top seed in the East when the Indiana Pacers visit the Miami Heat on Friday. Indiana holds a half-game edge over Miami entering the clash and a victory would reduce its magic number to one for clinching the No. 1 spot. The Pacers are just 8-12 over their past 20 games while the Heat is in the midst of a 10-11 stretch.

Miami could be without guard Dwyane Wade (hamstring) for the ninth straight contest and frontcourt reserve Chris Andersen (knee) also could be on the sidelines for the third time in four games. Forward LeBron James is much more concerned with the health of his club than landing the top seed in the East. “It’s not controlling our destiny about the No. 1 seed,” James told reporters. “We want to get healthy. That’s all that we care about, going into the postseason healthy. … Once everyone comes back, then we can get everything rolling.” Indiana rested its entire starting five while posting a 104-102 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Indiana, Sun Sports (Miami)

LINE HISTORY:
Early lines in Las Vegas have Miami set as 5-point favorites but suggest a move to -3 if Wade is out. The total opened 184 and could dip to 181 if Wade is inactive.

POWER RANKINGS:
Pacers (-11.0) - Miami (-13.8) + Home Court (-3.0) = Heat -5.8

INJURY REPORT:
Miami - D. Wade (Ques. Hamstring), G.Oden (Ques. Back), U. Haslem (Ques. Stomach), C. Anderson (Ques. Knee). Pacers - A. Bynum (Out Knee)

ABOUT THE PACERS (54-25):
Indiana’s ragged play reached a low point when it was crushed by the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday for its seventh loss in nine games. Seeing a tired and lackluster group led to coach Frank Vogel benching all five starters against the Bucks, which allowed key players like Paul George, David West and Roy Hibbert to get some much-needed rest. The Pacers were able to notch a victory courtesy of Chris Copeland’s game-winning shot with 1.2 seconds left. “We needed this to get a little confidence to feel better about ourselves,” veteran forward Luis Scola told reporters. “Start to get some rhythm back and we needed a win.”

ABOUT THE HEAT (53-25):
Miami knows there is an advantage to gaining the No. 1 seed after being taken to seven games by the Pacers in last season’s Eastern Conference playoffs before prevailing at home. The Heat see Indiana as a threat and would feel much more comfortable if they win this showdown and overtake the Pacers for the top spot. “It’s going to be intense,” Heat center Chris Bosh said. “It’s going to be a hard-fought game. There’s something at stake. It will pretty much be the playoffs and I think it will be a great atmosphere. We expect them at their best.”

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Miami.
* Home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

Friday's Tips

April 10, 2014

Knicks at Raptors – 7:05 PM EST

New York: 33-45 SU, 34-44 ATS
Toronto: 46-32 SU, 45-31-2 ATS

The Knicks are running out of time to make up a two-game deficit to the Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. New York heads to Toronto on Friday, as the Raptors are sneaking closer to their first Atlantic Division title since 2007, owning a three-game lead over the Nets. The Knicks are coming off consecutive losses to the Wizards and Heat, while Carmelo Anthony has been nursing a sore right shoulder which limited him to 4-of-17 shooting for just 13 points at Miami.

The Raptors beat the Knicks in the first two meetings this season on a back-to-back set in December, with each victory coming by double-digits. Anthony sat out both those games due to injury, as Toronto has won three of the past four home matchups with New York. Toronto failed to cover as 13 ½-point favorites in Wednesday’s 125-114 win over Philadelphia, the fourth consecutive victory for the Raptors.

Pacers at Heat – 7:35 PM EST

Indiana: 54-25 SU, 36-42-1 ATS
Miami: 53-25 SU, 36-40-2 ATS

These two rivals keep going back and forth sitting atop the Eastern Conference as Indiana pulled back in front on Wednesday in spite of pulling back its starters. The Pacers edged the Bucks, 104-102 as one-point road favorites as head coach Frank Vogel didn’t play any of his starters. Amazingly, Indiana has covered just four of its last 26 games, while losing each of its past three in the road underdog role by double-digits.

The Heat got tripped up by the Grizzlies on Wednesday night, 107-102, the third loss in the last four games for Miami. Despite this skid, Miami has posted a 6-2-1 ATS record the past nine games, which includes the 84-83 defeat at Indiana as two-point underdogs on March 26. The home team has won each of the last seven matchups in this series, with the ‘under’ cashing five times. Miami is riding a 7-3 run to the ‘under,’ while holding eight opponents in this stretch to less than 100 points.

Hawks at Nets – 7:35 PM EST

Atlanta: 35-43 SU, 34-43-1 ATS
Brooklyn: 43-35 SU, 42-36 ATS

The Hawks are on the verge of capturing the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, in spite of finishing with a below .500 record. Atlanta rallied late to knock off Boston on Wednesday, 105-97 to cash as seven-point favorites, the fourth win in the last six games. The Hawks are 8-3 to the ‘under’ the last 11 contests, while hitting the ‘under’ in four of the past five away from Philips Arena.

Since the start of February, the Nets have won 15 consecutive games at the Barclays Center, while covering 13 times in this stretch. Jason Kidd’s club has taken each of the first two meetings with the Hawks this season, including a 91-86 triumph as 1 ½-point home favorites in early January, the fourth win in five tries over Atlanta since January 2013. Thirteen times during this home winning streak the Nets have scored at least 100 points, while posting a 7-3 record to the ‘over’ the last 10 in Brooklyn.

Suns at Spurs – 8:35 PM EST

Phoenix: 47-31 SU, 50-27-1 ATS
San Antonio: 60-18 SU, 43-35 ATS

The Suns are still in the mix for a playoff spot after low expectations to start the season. Phoenix puts its three-game winning streak on the line, while winning seven of its past nine away from the Valley. Jeff Hornacek’s squad held off an undermanned Pelicans’ team in Wednesday’s 94-88 road triumph as nine-point favorites, the fourth victory this season over New Orleans. Since a three-game skid last month, the Suns have turned up the heat by posting an 11-3 SU and 9-5 ATS record in the last 14 contests.

The Spurs return home with no rest following Thursday’s contest at Dallas, as San Antonio goes for its 15th consecutive win at the AT&T Center. The last time the Spurs lost at home came way back on January 29 against the Bulls, while the Suns covered in their previous appearance in San Antonio in November as 13-point underdogs in a 99-96 defeat. Everyone is under the impression that Gregg Popovich may sit players on the second of a back-to-back, but the Spurs have won and covered four of their last five without rest.

Detroit Pistons best NBA Over bet of the last 24 years
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the final horn sounded on Detroit’s recent 122-100 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the 2013-14 Pistons etched themselves into NBA betting history.

The final score of Wednesday’s game marked the 53rd time Detroit topped the total this season, overtaking the 1990-91 Indiana Pacers, who went 52-28 Over/Under, as the best NBA Over bet of the past 24 years. And Detroit may not be done there.

The Pistons, at 53-26 Over/Under (67 percent Over), still have three more games to go before the end of the season. They visit the Chicago Bulls – the NBA’s best Under bet at 31-47 O/U – Friday, host the Toronto Raptors (42-36 O/U), and make a trip to play the Oklahoma City Thunder (39-39 O/U) before shutting it down in Motown.

The Pistons were highly regarded as the standard for defense during their NBA title runs as the “Bad Boys” in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and were among the league’s stingiest teams when they made back-to-back Finals appearances in 2004 and 2005, winning the championship by shutting down the powerful Los Angeles Lakers in 2004.

However, Detroit has been one of the most steady Over winners in recent years. The Pistons haven’t finished below .500 Over/Under since 2008-09 and have a combined 217-169-5 O/U count since – playing Over the total in 56 percent of their games the past five NBA seasons.

“It is interesting to note that the Pistons' Over run began right after their strong championship teams that played better defense,” says Covers Expert Steve Merril. “Perhaps the oddsmakers were a bit slow to adjust to the weaker Detroit teams that followed, especially weaker on defense.”

Detroit has steadily crushed the total this season, opening the schedule with a 7-2 Over/Under stretch. The market quickly overreacted to the Pistons’ Over potential and the team stayed Under the number for three straight games. That was the longest Under run Detroit bettors saw all season, with the Pistons posting more than two straight Unders only twice.

Detroit rolled to 10 Over wins in a row between Dec. 8 and Dec. 23, fattening the pockets of total bettors just in time for the holidays. Its current form finds the franchise on a 6-1 O/U streak, allowing an average of 114 points against in each of those Over paydays. That’s almost 10 points higher than the team’s season average of 104.5 points against.

“The extreme Over teams usually have a combination of good offense and bad defense, but if I had to choose one, I'd say bad defense is the cause for a more extreme Over team,” says Merril. “The reason is because offenses will always have good and bad or cold shooting nights, while bad defensive teams are normally bad every night.”

Since 1990, only eight teams have finished the season with 50 or more Over wins. Behind the Pistons and Pacers are the 1991-92 Charlotte Hornets, who finished with a 51-31 O/U mark. The 2001-02 Dallas Mavericks, 2007-08 New York Knicks, 2006-07 Minnesota Timberwolves, 2002-03 Los Angeles Lakers, and 2002-03 Golden State Warriors all topped the total 50 times in their respective seasons.

Game of the Day: Thunder at Pacers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Indiana Pacers (-2, 192.5)

The Indiana Pacers are still hopeful of claiming the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference but the quality of the opponent could pose a problem on Sunday. Indiana hosts the Oklahoma City Thunder – the No. 2 team in the West – as it attempts to wrestle the top spot in the East away from the Miami Heat, who defeated the Pacers on Friday. Oklahoma City leads the Los Angeles Clippers by 2 1/2 games and can clinch the second seed with a victory.

The Thunder rolled to an easy 118-94 victory over the Pacers on Dec. 8 in the team’s first meeting of the season. Forward Kevin Durant scored 32 points as Oklahoma City shot 61 percent from the field, while Indiana shot just 40 percent despite receiving 32 points from forward Paul George. The Thunder have won three straight games after routing the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday. Indiana has lost eight of its last 11 games and its quality of play has alarmingly dropped off after a strong showing over the first three-quarters of the campaign.

TV:
1 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY:
The Pacers opened as 2-point home favorites Saturday night. The early total opened 192.5 (Over -110).

POWER RANKINGS:
Thunder (-13.7) - Pacers (-11.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Pacers -0.3

INJURY REPORT:
Indiana - A. Bynum (Out - Knee)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (58-21):
Power forward Serge Ibaka blocked a season-high eight shots and had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the 116-94 win over the Pelicans. The double-double was the 27th of the season for Ibaka and coach Scott Brooks beamed about his effort afterward. “Serge was spectacular,” Brooks said. “He’s right there with the best defensive players in the league. Blocked shots, he had eight, but he altered probably 10 others. And that’s what makes our defense good, when everybody is participating. When we do have a breakdown, he’s out there backing everybody up and covering for everybody’s mistakes.”

ABOUT THE PACERS (54-26):
Center Roy Hibbert continued his recent disappearing act by grabbing one rebound in 34 minutes against the Heat. The 7-2, 290-pounder has been practically invisible recently and has just six total rebounds over his past four games. Hibbert is averaging 4.6 rebounds since the All-Star break after averaging 7.7 before it and has reached double digits on the boards just once over the past six-plus weeks. “We’ve got to get more from him,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel said after the loss to Miami. A recent benching of the starting five came after Hibbert was pulled after nine ineffective minutes on April 4, which means the big man had nearly a full week of rest leading into his latest poor effort.

TRENDS:

* Thunder are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.
* Over is 18-4 in the last 22 meetings.
* Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
* Underdog is 13-5 ATS in the last 18 meetings.

CONSENSUS:
76 percent of bets are on Oklahoma City +2.

Sunday's Tips

April 13, 2014

Bulls at Knicks – 7:35 PM EST

Chicago: 47-32 SU, 40-38-1 ATS
New York: 34-45 SU, 35-44 ATS

The Knicks won’t be heading to the postseason after the Hawks clinched the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference last night. However, New York still has three games remaining in this disastrous season as Chicago heads to Manhattan tonight. The home team has taken all three meetings this season, while the Bulls have won seven of the last eight in the series dating back to 2012.

The Bulls have a shot at grabbing the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, sitting one game ahead of the Raptors heading into Sunday’s action. Chicago rallied from an 18-point deficit to stun Detroit on Friday night, 106-98 for its seventh consecutive victory, but the Bulls didn’t cash as 10-point home favorites. Since falling at Miami in late February, the Bulls have won eight of their past 10 on the highway, while going 4-1-1 ATS in the role of a road favorite.

The Knicks snapped a two-game skid in Friday’s 108-100 road triumph at Toronto as 5 ½-point underdogs, but a 5-5 record since an eight-game winning streak in March derailed any shot at the playoffs. Since March, New York has won five of seven games at Madison Square Garden, but the Knicks own a 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS record in the last seven tries as a home underdog.

Warriors at Blazers – 9:05 PM EST

Golden State: 49-30 SU, 38-38-3 ATS
Portland: 52-28 SU, 43-37 ATS

Both the Blazers and Warriors are headed to the playoffs, as the two teams meet tonight in Portland to improve their seeding. The Blazers will likely face the Rockets in the opening round of the playoffs, but home-court will be decided over the next few days. The Warriors will likely draw the Thunder or the Clippers in the first round, as Golden State will start on the road in the postseason for the second straight year.

Golden State has won four of its past six games, including Friday’s 112-95 victory over the Lakers as 9 ½-point road favorites. The Warriors needed that win after blowing a 20-point lead in Thursday’s one-point home setback to the Nuggets, as Mark Jackson’s club has won eight of 12 road contests since the All-Star break. Golden State has taken two of three meetings from Portland this season, including a thrilling 113-112 triumph at the Moda Center in mid-March, but the Blazers covered as two-point home ‘dogs.

Portland has turned things up since a slumping March by winning seven of its past eight contests, while covering five times. Since that one-point defeat to Golden State last month, the Blazers have won five of their last six at the Moda Center, but are just 2-4 ATS, although three of those non-covers came as a favorite of at least 9 ½ points.

Grizzlies at Lakers – 9:35 PM EST

Memphis: 47-32 SU, 35-42-2 ATS
Los Angeles: 25-54 SU, 38-40-1 ATS

The Grizzlies are fighting it out with the Suns for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, as Memphis owns a half-game lead heading into tonight’s action. Memphis heads to Phoenix tonight for basically a playoff contest, but the Grizzlies need to avoid a letdown spot tonight against the Lakers.

Los Angeles is playing its final home game of the season, owning a dreadful 14-26 SU and 18-21-1 ATS record at Staples Center. The Lakers come into tonight’s action at 5-11 ATS as an underdog of at least 11 points, while losing each of their last four home games by double-digits. Los Angeles has dropped eight of its past nine contests overall, while covering only twice in this span.

Memphis heads west coming off consecutive home wins over Miami and Philadelphia, while winning four of six since a brief two-game losing streak. The Grizzlies have put together an atrocious 1-9 ATS record away from FedEx Forum since mid-March, including a 1-5 ATS mark when laying points. Memphis has grabbed two of three meetings from Los Angeles this season, including an 89-86 win at Staples Center way back in November.
