Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Golden Nugget sportsbook's college football over/unders for this coming fall..........

-- Clemson Tigers, 10, over -$120

-- Alabama Crimson Tide, 9.5

-- Florida State Seminoles, 10, over -$120

-- Oklahoma Sooners, 10, under -$130

-- LSU Tigers, 9.5, over 9.5 -$140

-- Michigan Wolverines, 9.5, over -$120

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

13) I'm tired of hearing people whine about baseball games lasting too long, as if an extra 8-10 minutes is going to ruin someone's day. Want to eliminate 8-10 minutes a game? Eliminate coaches/managers visiting the mound, that will do it. Whether a game is 2:52 or 3:05, baseball is great. Nothing wrong with spending more time having fun.

12) Saw couple of amazing catches in 9th inning of games last night; Minnesota CF Danny Santana made a fantastic catch, keeping the game 2-2 with the go-ahead run on second base and Rafael Ortega of the Angels made a sliding catch down left field line to help the Halos hold off the Dodgers 7-4.

11) Nationals 9, Mets 1-- Matt Harvey is 3-6, 5.77 and terribly overrated. Last year, New York media had him getting inducted in Cooperstown before he turned 27. Last night, Harvey went over the 500 innings mark in his career- he is 30-24.

10) Austin Russell, better known as Chumlee on Pawn Stars, somehow avoided jail time after at one time having 19 felony drug charges against him. Hope he realizes how lucky he is; when I was in Las Vegas in April, it seemed apparent that he was going to jail and maybe for a very long time.

9) Pro Bowl is moving from Honolulu to Orlando this comng year; for some reason, it was mentioned that Sydney, Australia was interested in hosting it. Why?

8) Orlando Magic gave Frank Vogel $22M for four years- first Magic-Pacer game next fall should be interesting.

7) Buck Showalter once managed a team in the NY-Penn League, a short-season farm team. He went 114-41 in Oneonta, hometown of ESPN's Mark May, and also the place where John Elway played his minor league baseball.

6) In case you are wondering, Elway hit .318 with a .432 OB% that year, for a 43-33 Oneonta team that was managed by former White Sox CF Ken Berry.

5) Drew Pomeranz has pitched well for San Diego but they haven't hit much for him; in Pomeranz' last four starts, a total of seven runs have scored.

4) Stan Musial hit three homers in a game at age 42, the oldest player to do so.

3) Angels are 22-1 in Mike Trout's career when he scores 3+ runs in a game.

2) Not only did Texas A&M's basketball team lose four senior starters this year, three of their assistant coaches also bolted for other jobs, so Billy Kennedy is totally rebuilding his program- he hired Don Maestri, who coached Troy State for 30 years and will now be someone Kennedy can lean on for advice. .

1) Chargers signed Zach Mettenberger as a backup QB; Giants/Bengals also had interest n the former LSU signal-caller. Backing up Philip Rivers seems like good duty; Rivers has started every San Diego game for the last decade.

Hottest team: Giants (8-0 last eight)
San Francisco is coming off one of its most successful road trips ever by winning all seven games at Arizona and San Diego. Even more incredible than pulling off a 7-0 road swing inside the NL West is San Francisco’s pitching, which allowed one run in five of those victories. The Giants cashed the ‘under’ in all seven wins, as Bruce Bochy’s team returns home for a major test with the Cubs this weekend at AT&T Park. Jake Peavy takes the mound for the Giants in the opener, as the former Cy Young winner is coming off a solid start at Arizona in a no-decision by allowing three hits and one earned run in six innings of a 5-3 win.

Coldest team: Mets (1-6 last seven)
It’s been a disastrous run of late for the defending National League champions, while getting embarrassed by the rival Nationals at home on Thursday, 9-1. Matt Harvey’s struggles continued last night, allowing nine runs (six earned) in 2.2 innings of work, as the Mets own a 3-6 record with the right-hander on the mound. The New York offense has disappeared during this cold stretch, scoring two runs or less five times, while plating a total of five runs in the Washington series. The Brewers invade Citi Field tonight as Steven Matz goes for his sixth straight win after missing his last turn with a sore elbow.

Hottest pitcher: Jake Arrieta, Cubs (7-0, 1.29 ERA)
The reigning Cy Young award winner looks to snap San Francisco’s eight-game winning streak as the Cubs have won 23 consecutive regular season starts made by Arrieta. The Cubs’ right-hander beat the Giants twice in 2015, including an 8-5 victory at AT&T Park last August in which he scattered four hits in six innings of work. Arrieta is making his fifth road start of the season as he has put together three scoreless performances in his first four outings away from Wrigley Field.

Coldest pitcher:
Hisashi Iwakuma, Mariners (1-4, 4.38 ERA)
Seattle improved to 15-7 on the road with a blowout victory at Baltimore on Thursday. One of its more reliable pitchers over the years has struggled of late as the Mariners own a 2-5 record in Iwakuma’s last seven starts. Iwakuma has allowed seven earned runs in his past two outings, but Seattle is 2-1 in the right-hander’s last three road starts. Last season, Iwakuma lost both starts against National League opponents as Seattle travels to Cincinnati to face a Reds’ squad that has lost four straight games.

Biggest UNDER run:
Rockies (8-3 last 11)
Colorado lost a slugfest at St. Louis on Thursday, 13-7, snapping a five-game streak to the ‘under.’ The Rockies have cashed the ‘under’ in four of the past five contests away from Coors Field, as Colorado has scored three runs or less three times in this stretch. Colorado heads to Pittsburgh for a weekend set as the Rockies looking to avenge a three-game sweep from late April. In those three games, the Rockies allowed 24 runs as two of those contests sailed ‘over’ the total.

Biggest OVER run: Blue Jays (6-2 last eight)
Toronto’s five-game ‘over’ streak came to an end in Thursday’s 3-2 victory in extra-innings at Minnesota, as the Jays allowed less than six runs in a game for the first time in six tries. The explosive Blue Jays’ offense hasn’t shown much pop of late by scoring at least five runs in three of the past 12 games. Aaron Sanchez takes the mound for Toronto tonight as the right-hander cashed his first ‘over’ in five road starts his last time out, allowing six earned runs in 6.2 innings of a 7-6 defeat at Texas.

Matchup to watch:
Royals vs. White Sox
Chicago snapped a four-game losing streak behind Chris Sale winning his ninth start in Thursday’s 2-1 victory over Houston. The AL Central-leading White Sox welcome in the defending World Series champion Royals for their first matchup of the season as Kansas City heads to the South Side of Chicago with a 20-20 record. Jose Quintana isn’t too far behind Sale in ERA as the Chicago southpaw owns an ERA of 1.54 to go along with a 5-2 record. Quintana has allowed only two earned run in three home victories this season, while finished ‘under’ the total in seven straight starts. The Royals are fresh off a 4-2 homestand, but have lost five of six road series openers this season.

Betcha didn’t know: The Cardinals have won 14 of the last 17 meetings with the Diamondbacks since 2014, including a 6-0 record at Busch Stadium. Carlos Martinez takes the mound for St. Louis in the series opener, as the right-hander has dominated the D-backs in his last two starts, including tossing eight scoreless innings in an 8-2 rout at Chase Field last month.

Biggest public favorite: Pirates (-225) vs. Rockies

Biggest public underdog: Yankees (+115) at Athletics

Biggest line move: Orioles (+120 to +115) at Angels

AP source: Lincecum completes $2.5 million deal with Angels
May 20, 2016

A person with knowledge of the contract says two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum has completed a $2.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press on Friday because the Angels hadn't made an announcement. MLB Network first reported the financial terms.

The 31-year-old free-agent right-hander is trying to come back from left hip surgery. He didn't pitch after June 27 last year with the San Francisco Giants - his only other major league team - because of degenerative issues with his hips. He had surgery Sept. 3 and didn't sign with a team after concluding a $35 million, two-year deal last season.

Lincecum went 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 15 starts last season. He threw a showcase for interested clubs May 6 in Arizona. He hopes to start, and that could happen with the injury-plagued Angels.

MLB betting cheat sheet: A different shade of Red

Boston leads the American League with a +57 run differential and are tied for first in the American League East.

A Different Shade of Red

One team that has had a nice week thus far is Cleveland, who saw their YTD run differential go from +8 to +35 thanks to a four-game sweep of lowly Cincinnati. This weekend’s opponent may have the same color in their nickname, but that’s all the Red Sox and Reds have in common right now. Boston leads the American League with a +57 run differential and like the Indians, they’ve been able to put 13 or more runs on the board in multiple games recently. The Cleveland-Boston series takes place at Fenway Park and despite a 2-6 team start record, Corey Kluber has his team favored in Friday’s series opener. These teams split a pair of games in Cleveland earlier this year with both Friday starters – Kluber and Clay Buchholz losing their respective starts.

Chalking ‘Em Up

I can’t stop talking about the Phillies and this highly irregular start of theirs. While they are currently seven games above .500, they have been outscored by 28 runs this year. As I’ve been through before, this discrepancy is owed to a 14-3 record in one-run games (4-0 in extra innings). Those expecting regression will likely have to wait until after this weekend as the Phils next play the lowly Braves. Note that these NL East rivals are the two lowest scoring teams in all of baseball. But what’s really fascinating here is that a Philly club that found itself favored on the money line only 16 times all of last season has already been favored 10 times in 2016 and that number figures to jump to 13 after this weekend! Also note that Atlanta has actually been better on the road (8-13) than at home (2-17).

Feeling Blue

The Blue Jays have basically had the opposite luck of the Phillies when it comes to one-run games this season (just 4-10). But they picked up a much needed win on Thursday, taking the series opener in Minnesota by a score of 3-2 in 11 innings. It might be a good time to “buy low” on last year’s AL East champs as it looks like the juice isn’t going to be that high on a per game basis this weekend in the Twin Cities. Since the start of last season, Toronto is 6-2 against the Twins.

Hitting Notes

* Speaking of Toronto, Jose Bautista hit leadoff yesterday for the first time since 2010. The Blue Jays offense, which was other-worldly in 2015, has not been the same this season. But Bautista-Josh Donaldson-Edwin Encarnacion at the top of the order just might jumpstart things. Bautista, who is batting just .223 right now, went only 1-for-4 Thursday vs. Minnesota. So it will be interesting to see if manager John Gibbons continues to have him in that leadoff spot. A .374 OBP would be justification for doing so.

* One team that has had no problems hitting or scoring runs this season is St. Louis. It seems to be a different hitter stepping up every night for the Cardinals, but the one to pay particular attention to is Aledmys Diaz. He’s mostly been hitting towards the bottom of the order – typically seventh or eighth – but clearly it was time to move him up as his average is .376 with 1.051 OPS in his first 37 big league games. He hit second on Thursday and while it was only a 1-for-4 night at the plate, he did score twice. Unlike previous editions, it looks as if this year’s Cards will have to be carried by their hitting as the pitching has fallen off rather dramatically from last season’s record setting campaign. This weekend, they host an Arizona club that has been a real “road warrior” so far, holding hosts to just 3.5 runs per game.

Pitching Notes

* Tampa Bay’s Matt Andriese couldn’t have asked for his first two starts of the year to go any better. He’s allowed just 1 ER in 16 innings of work and went the distance his last time out in a masterful two-hit shutout of Oakland. Start number three comes Friday in Detroit. Andriese’s strikeout numbers may not be that impressive (just eight), but he did throw a first pitch strike to 21 of 29 Oakland hitters and induced 11 swinging strikes. The Tigers – easily – have the strongest offense that Andriese will have faced to date.

* Padres starter Colin Rea by no means has great numbers this year (4.26 ERA and 1.399 WHIP), yet he finds himself at No. 8 in terms of net units (+5.7) among all starting pitchers. He hasn’t been favored in a single start and won’t be on Sunday either when his team wraps up a three-game set with the division rival Dodgers. Note that earlier this year, Rea did cash at +180 against LA. In fact, he has a 3-0 team start record at +180 or higher on the money line!

Totals Trend

When Washington visited Miami earlier this year, the Under cashed in all four games. The Nats make their return visit to South Beach this weekend.

Injury Notes

* Victor Martinez of the Tigers missed Wednesday's game with a head cold but is fully expect to return to the lineup Friday night against the Rays.

* CC Sabathia will be activated from the 15-day DL in time for his Friday night start in Oakland. He's been out nursing a groin injury.

* The Rangers are expected to activate right fielder Shin-Soo Choo from the 15-day DL in time for Friday's meeting with the Astros in Houston. Choo has missed the last 36 games with an injured calf.

* Shortstop Erick Aybar of the Braves is listed as questionable for Friday's game against the Phillies. Aybar missed Thursday's game after being sent to the hospital to have a chicken bone removed from his throat. True story.

* Adrian Gonzalez of the Dodgers is officially listed as doubtful for Friday's game against the Padres. Those old men and their bad backs - he's missed the Dodgers' last three games.

* And again. Ryan Braun of the Brewers is doubtful to be in Friday's lineup against the Mets. Braun has missed the last two games with lower-back stiffness.

Friday's Weather Report:

* There is a slight chance of rain this evening (15 percent) in Pittsburgh where the Colorado Rockies will be taking on the Pirates. There will also be a light breeze blowing in from right-center field. The total for this one is set at 7.5.

* There is an 80 percent chance of rain in Cincinnati tonight where the Reds will welcome the Seattle Mariners. The rain is expected to taper off to showers later in the evening and they should be able to get this one in. The total tonight is set at 8.5.

The top four favorites covered the top four spots with Exaggerator again the runner up. We couldn't collect on our big bets as Mohaymen could only manage fourth. We did hit the saver exacta but not much joy there....

The Preakness comes quickly and welcomes a host of newcomers trying to not only beat the Derby winner, but launch themselves into the summer spotlight as the racing season continues to crank up. As I sit here in Delaware, the weather forecast for Saturday is BAD; 90% chance of rain all morning into the afternoon and COLD with a high of 57 degrees. The weather forecast certainly requires a bit of restraint in wagering but also introduces a whole other set of variables when handicapping the race.

Nyquist is still the horse to beat. As I've said before, he has done nothing wrong and look really good in the Derby. I am convinced that Exaggerator is as honest as they come and he keeps Nyquist honest. If Nyquist doesn't show up, Exaggerator will turn the tables. These two (Nyquist and Exaggerator) are clear standouts in the 3yr old category so far this year; I just don't see a very deep crop of 3yr olds (yet). The problem is that they are both very short odds AND the weather conditions are sure to make conditions anything but ideal. Talent alone, these two run 1-2 but I challenge anyone to say, for sure, how they will respond to adverse conditions on Saturday.

As is customary, I will throw out a wildcard for you to consider. This runner may be worth a small wager and given the expected weather and track conditions is not a complete reach. Abiding Star is on a bit of a hot streak coming into the Preakness. He has won five in a row and has had success over wet tracks. He will likely be close to the front if not on the lead and may not look back. Distance is a concern and he may be a notch below many in here but horses do get brave sometimes and if he finds himself in front turning for home, the track is heavy and tiring, and the others don't fire their best he may shock at a big price and he would be a nice play underneath the two favorites.

Selections:
Nyquist: Deserving favorite and a notch better than the rest (just cant bet a 3/5 in adverse conditions)
Exaggerator: Honest, hard knocker capable of winning if top one doesn't fire his best (just cant bet a horse that has lost 4 times to top one and short odds)
Abiding Star: Longshot being tested for class and distance but may get brave on the front end and has handled off tracks.

The Bets:
$5WPS Abiding Star
$5EXBX Abiding Star/Nyquist/Exaggerator
$2TRIBX Abiding Star/Nyquist/Exagerator

Total Bets: $57.00

College football knowledge..........
13) LSU's new defensive coordinator last worked at Wisconsin; Tigers, who have 18 starters back, open the season Sept 3 against the Badgers at Lambeau Field.

12) USC plays Alabama, Stanford, Utah in September, none of them at home.

11) Urban Meyer has a 154-27 record, 50-4 at Ohio State; his defensvie coordinator this year is former Rutgers/Bucs coach Greg Schiano.

10) Texas A&M recruited only two of the top 20 recruits from the Lone Star State this year- they're on their fourth offensive coordinator in the last five years. Aggies are 16-10 overall the last two years, 17-15 in conference play the last four years.

9) Contrast that to Oklahoma State, which is 27-12 the last three years; their OC is in his fourth season in Stillwater, their DC is in his sixth season. Continuity helps.

8) UCLA's freshman kicker JJ Molson is the grandson of Montreal Canadiens' owner, beer magnate Geoff Molson; wonder if they'll be selling Molson beer at the Rose Bowl this year. Having a freshman kicker can drive you to drink.

7) Michigan State is 36-5 the last three years, but lost top two WRs and their QB who started for three years. Spartans play Notre Dame/Wisconsin on back/back early on in season. Mark D'Antonio is 7-2 against rival Michigan.

6) Tennessee hasn't won SEC East since 2007; they haven't won the SEC since '98, the year after Peyton Manning left. Vols' over/under win total in Las Vegas this year is 10, so with 18 starters back, Butch Davis' team has high expectations.

5) Mack Brown was 25-14 his last three years at Texas; Charlie Strong is 11-14 his first two years in Austin. Longhorns gave up 30.3 ppg last year.

4) Florida State is 49-6 the last four years; only one of their four September games is at home. RB Dalvin Cook won SEC rushing title by 164 yards LY.

3) Oregon went 9-4 LY, after going 48-5 the four years before that; they lost their bowl game after leading 31-0 at the half. Once again, the Ducks' QB will be a transfer from a I-AA school, this time Dakota Prukop from Montana State.

2) Ole Miss has its first-ever two-game winning streak over Alabama, which is hard to believe. Rebels play Florida State, Alabama and Georgia, all in September. Oy.

1) Michigan is 2-14 against Ohio State/Michigan State the last eight years.

LEADING OFF: Bradley has 25-game hit streak, Stanton slumps
May 21, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

STREAKING

Jackie Bradley Jr. takes a 25-game hitting streak into Boston's matchup at Fenway Park against Indians righty Trevor Bauer. The longest hitting string in Red Sox history is 34 games by Dom DiMaggio - his brother, Joe, holds the big league record of 56 games in a row.

STUCK

Marlins star Giancarlo Stanton will try again to make solid contact when Miami host righty Joe Ross and the Nationals. Stanton is in a 4-for-45 rut that has dropped his batting average to .214, and he's struck out 12 times in the past four games. He has 11 homers, but only one RBI since May 6.

MOOSE ON THE LOOSE

Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is expected to be activated off the 15-day disabled list before KC plays the White Sox. Moustakas rejoined the team in Chicago on Friday following a minor league rehab stint. The 2015 All-Star hasn't played since May 4 because of an injured left thumb.

JUNIOR DAY

The Reds are honoring Ken Griffey Jr. by giving away 25,000 bobbleheads for their game against the Mariners at Great American Ball Park. Griffey grew up in Cincinnati - his father, Ken Sr., played for the Big Red Machine - and he became a superstar with the Mariners before being traded to the Reds.

The bobblehead depicts him in both Seattle and Cincinnati uniforms. He'll be inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame this summer.

SHORT BREAK

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell will return to the starting lineup in San Francisco after a one-day break, manager Joe Maddon says. Russell struck out three times in Thursday's 5-3 loss to Milwaukee.
