Hottest team: Giants (6-0 last six)

Madison Bumgarner continued San Francisco’s fantastic run of quality pitching, going the distance in a 5-1 win at San Diego where he lost the shutout in the 9th thanks to a Matt Kemp homer. He struck out 11 hitters, got into it with Wil Myers and pitched comfortably thanks to Brandon Crawford’s second-inning 3-run homer providing cushion. The Giants shortstop drove in all five runs while going 2-for-3, cashing in as Brandon Belt and Hunter Pence reached base safely 5-of-8 times in front of him.

The Giants have given up just eight runs in the last five games will have seen the ‘under’ prevail in nine of the last 10 games. Johnny Cueto (5-1, 2.97 ERA) will look to continue that streak and has given up two runs or fewer in five of his eight starts this season, including two of the last three. He pitched his only shutout of the season against the Padres on April 26, going the distance and striking out 11, both also season-bests. Lefty Drew Pomeranz (4-3, 1.80), who has been San Diego’s best pitcher thus far, had his worst outing in a 5-4 loss in San Francisco the previous day, surrendering what remain season-highs in hits (7) and earned runs (3), lasting a season-low 4.1 innings. Pence homered off him. These NL West foes get together next week at AT&T Park after the Giants host the Cubs this weekend.

Coldest team: Braves (2-10 last 12)

After firing Fredi Gonzalez on Tuesday, the Braves fell behind 9-0 as rookie Aaron Blair got rocked by the Pirates failing to get out of the second inning. It was a nasty welcome to the big leagues for interim manager Brian Snitker, getting a 125-game tryout to keep the gig. The Pirates pounded out a season-high 21 hits in a 12-9 win, though Atlanta was encouraged by young CF Mallex Smith hitting two more home runs, becoming the first player on the roster besides Freddie Freeman with more than one.
We’ll see if things can go any better as the team sends staff ace Julio Teheran (0-4, 3.17) out to the mound in order to slow down the Bucs bats, which have produced 20 runs over the first two contests of the four-game series. It’s not exactly reassuring that the Braves have averaged just 2.1 runs per game in Teheran’s starts. Pittsburgh is countering with Francisco Liriano (3-2, 4.99). The teams conclude this set Thursday before Atlanta ventures to Philly for the weekend.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Tillman (5-1, 2.58 ERA)

Tillman has always been better at Camden Yards than on the road, so he’s been fortunate since this will his seventh start in nine outings this season. He’s 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA at home and will be looking to help the Orioles bounce back from a 10-0 loss to Seattle on Monday, their second loss in a row after seven consecutive wins. Baltimore has lost three straight just once this season (April 24-26). It’s worth pointing out that Mariners star Robinson Cano is 14-for-31 (.452) against Tillman throughout his career, homering twice.

Coldest pitcher: Shelby Miller (1-4, 6.94 ERA)

Miller finally broke through with his first win on May 7 – about five months too late for hopeful, exasperated Diamondbacks fans – but that breakthrough came against the lowly Braves, his former team. In Atlanta, too. He lost again in his last outing against San Francisco, so he’s now 0-4 with a 7.46 ERA in Phoenix as he steps in to try and help sweep New York. Miller gave up seven runs in five innings in his only career outing against the Yankees and will try to overcome the pressure that follows him since most Arizona fans felt the team grossly over-spent for him, dealing Dansby Swanson, the 2015 MLB Draft’s top pick, in addition to Ender Inciarte and the aforementioned Blair.

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (6-2 last eight)

The Giants own this distinction too, but what Colorado has done may actually be more impressive since four of those 'under' results have come in at Coors Field. Chad Bettis kept the run going on Tuesday in St. Louis, holding down the Cardinals in a 3-1 upset to help start a nine-game road trip in style. Lefty Chris Rusin, making just his fourth start after initially coming out of the bullpen, has yet to get out of the sixth inning this season and has never had a winning season in the majors. He'll be opposed by Adam Wainwright, who has helped the Cards win each of the last four times he's taken the mound.

Biggest OVER run: Red Sox (8-0 last eight)

Boston was rained out in Kansas City on Monday and will play a day-night doubleheader here, hoping to continue a run that has seen them win seven of nine despite Tuesday's 8-4 loss. The Royals did the heavy lifting in extending the streak last night after the Red Sox scored 73 runs on their most recent seven-game homestand to start this flurry. They'll return home after the night portion of this twinbill for a six-game set against the Indians and Rockies. Extending this streak could prove difficult given the pitching matchups on Wednesday, as Boston sends Steven Wright (3-3, 2.36) out for the opener against solid veteran Ian Kennedy (4-3, 3.25), while David Price (5-1, 6.00) squares off against Edinson Volquez (4-3, 3.51) in the nightcap.

Matchup to watch: Astros at White Sox

Chicago is looking to avoid its first four-game losing streak of the season as they send unbeaten Mat Latos (5-0, 3.40) to the mound. After falling just short in a 6-5, 11-inning loss to Houston in the first of a 10-game homestand, the White Sox have to be aware that Cleveland, Kansas City and Detroit are on winning streaks and charging hard while they've dropped five of six. Latos, despite his unbeaten mark, has failed to get out of the sixth inning in his last three starts, which is one reason why an ERA that was at 0.74 through four starts now looks ordinary. The Astros remain in last place in the AL West, but have won in Doug Fister's last three starts. They're without OF Carlos Gomez (ribs), who has gone on the DL. Chicago is hoping to have home run leader Todd Frazier back from a bout with the flu.

Betcha didn’t know: Cleveland is sending out Mike Clevinger for his big league debut after an impressive 5-0 mark in Triple-A. He's of Native American descent and had the second-lowest WHIP and third-most strikeouts in all of Double-A last year, earning organizational Player of the Year honors. Clevinger is undoubtedly hoping to get some of the same run support he's seen his offense put together of late since the Indians have outscored the Bengals, er, Reds, 28-7 over a two-game stint at Progressive Field to open this series, which shifts to Cincinnati for these next two games.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-180) at Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+155) at Cardinals

Biggest line move: Yankees (-120 to -140) vs. Diamondbacks

Braves fire manager Fredi Gonzalez
May 17, 2016

ATLANTA (AP) The Atlanta Braves on Tuesday fired manager Fredi Gonzalez, who couldn't survive the worst record in the majors.

Braves general manager John Coppolella confirmed the firing of Gonzalez. This was Gonzalez sixth season with the Braves, who are in the midst of a dismal stretch: They have lost two straight and eight of 10, have baseball's worst record at 9-28 and already are 13 1/2 games out of first place in the NL East.

Brian Snitker, who has been manager of the Braves' Triple-A Gwinnett team, will move up as interim manager. Snitker was Atlanta's third-base coach from 2006 to 2013, also following Gonzalez in that role when Gonzalez was named manager of the Marlins.

Snitker also had two stints with Atlanta as the bullpen coach in 1985 and from 1988 to 1990.

The Braves also fired bench coach Carlos Tosca. Gwinnett pitching coach Marty Reed has joined the club as bullpen coach. Terry Pendleton will move from first base coach to bench coach and Eddie Perez will move from bullpen coach to first base coach.

Gonzalez, 52, replaced Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox, who retired following the 2010 season. Gonzalez was the only Latino manager in the majors and he is the first Braves manager to be fired since Russ Nixon in 1990.

The Braves won the NL East with 96 wins in 2013 but fell to 79-83 the following season.

Since then, the Braves have shifted to rebuilding mode, seeking young pitchers in a series of moves that stripped the roster of such established veterans as Justin Upton, Jason Heyward, Andrelton Simmons, Craig Kimbrel and Shelby Miller.

Expectations were low this season as the Braves set their focus on moving into their new SunTrust Park in 2017. Even so, it was clear Coppolella and team president John Hart didn't expect to have the worst record in the majors.

The Braves lost their first nine games. They had a brief recovery with four straight wins but haven't been able to put together another winning streak. They lost two of three at Kansas City to open a 10-game road trip and also lost Monday night's series opener at Pittsburgh, 8-5.

Gonzalez was hurt by especially poor play at home. The Braves are 2-17 at Turner Field.

Gonzalez was 434-413 with the Braves. He was 276-279 in four seasons with the Marlins.

The Braves were competitive through the first half of the 2015 season, posting a 42-42 mark. Injuries and trades helped fuel a free-fall for a 67-95 finish, and the poor results continued this season.

The poor start led to increased questions about Gonzalez's status, and he recently addressed the uncertainty.

''Nothing is for sure in our business, so you hold your head up, make good decisions and go forward and see what happens,'' he said.

Gonzalez also recently said he worried he wouldn't survive the slow start to see a turnaround when more young players are ready for the majors.

''My biggest concern is you go through these lumps, you see these young guys come in and then you get let go, you get dismissed, and the guys are here the next year and they're winning everything,'' Gonzalez said.

''But again, this is a cruel business and it's part of our job.''

LEADING OFF: Tillman faces M's, tries for 5th straight win
May 18, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

OLD FRIENDS

Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman (5-1, 2.58 ERA) tries to win his fifth straight start when he faces the Mariners, the team that drafted him in 2006. Tillman came to Baltimore in the 2008 trade for Erik Bedard and is 6-0 lifetime against Seattle.

KID STUFF

Two of the Astros' top prospects, Colin Moran and Tony Kemp, are expected to make their first major league starts when struggling Houston plays the White Sox. Moran was the sixth overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft by Miami and is a .299 career hitter in the minors. The 5-foot-6 Kemp has been an on-base machine in the minors while playing second base and the outfield. ''They're both going to play different roles here. We're looking to jump-start our offense for a little more consistency,'' manager A.J. Hinch said.

DOUBLE DIP

Boston plays a day-night doubleheader at World Series champion Kansas City to make up Monday's rainout. Steven Wright and David Price are scheduled to pitch for the Red Sox, with Ian Kennedy and Edinson Volquez going for the Royals. After a difficult start with his new team this season, Price (5-1) ironed out a mechanical glitch in his delivery before his most recent outing and struck out 12 last Thursday in an 11-1 win over Houston, lowering his ERA to 6.00.

NEW VOICE

Interim manager Brian Snitker gets his second chance at his first win in charge of the struggling Atlanta Braves (9-29). Snitker was the skipper at Triple-A Gwinnett before getting promoted Tuesday when Atlanta fired Fredi Gonzalez. In Snitker's first game at the helm, the Braves lost 12-9 in Pittsburgh. This time, they'll turn to right-hander Julio Teheran (0-4, 3.17 ERA). Atlanta is averaging just 2.12 runs per game when Teheran starts this season.

FILLING IN

Bench coach DeMarlo Hale manages the Blue Jays for the second consecutive night against Tampa Bay while John Gibbons serves a three-game suspension. Gibbons was penalized for returning to the field following an earlier ejection Sunday and inciting additional fighting during a brawl with the Rangers. Major League Baseball disciplined 14 players and staff members Tuesday for their roles in the fight. The stiffest punishment went to Texas 2B Rougned Odor, suspended eight games and fined $5,000 for punching Toronto slugger Jose Bautista in the jaw. Odor appealed and is allowed to play pending a resolution.

SNAKE BIT

Diamondbacks pitcher Shelby Miller (1-4, 6.94 ERA) tries to turn things around against the Yankees. Miller has lost three of his past four starts and has more walks (23) than strikeouts this season (22). Arizona acquired Miller from Atlanta in the offseason for a package headlined by Dansby Swanson, the top pick in the 2015 amateur draft. Swanson is playing very well in Double-A with the Braves and also has more walks than strikeouts.

POM KING

The Padres get a tough test in Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto (5-1, 2.97 ERA), but fortunately for San Diego, lefty Drew Pomeranz (4-3, 1.80) hasn't needed much run support lately. He's thrown 11 scoreless innings over his last two starts, a 2-0 win over the Mets and a 1-0 victory over the Cubs.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Westgate Superbook's odds on random football games this coming fall..........

-- Week 8: Packers (-3.5) @ Atlanta

-- Week 9: Broncos @ Oakland (-1.5)

-- Week 10: Seahawks @ New England (-3.5)

-- Week 11: Bears @ NJ Giants (-4)

-- Week 12: Vikings (-1) @ Detroit

-- Week 13: Colts @ NJ Jets (-2.5)

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

13) Warriors 118, Thunder 91-- No one on Oklahoma City had more than 9 points, other than Durant/Westbrook. They need a third double figure scorer to compete.

12) Knicks are apparently going to name Jeff Hornacek head coach; good coach, good basketball guy, but kind of feel about him the same way I felt when the Mets hired Art Howe as manager-- not very New York-ish. Sometimes that matters.

11) Chicago White Sox turned their second triple play of the season last night; they are first team since '07 Phillies to turn two triple plays in same season.

10) A's 8, Rangers 1-- Khris Davis has nine HRs, 20 RBI in first 18 days of May.

9) NBA playoff favorites of 8+ points are 19-6 vs spread this season.

8) Why is the price of gasoline 45 cents a gallon cheaper in New Jersey than here in New York? Is Crhis Christie that good a governor that his constituents don't get ripped off like we do? By the way, in New Jersey they put the gas in your car for you.

7) NBA Summer League will be July 8-18 at UNLV and on TV every day on NBA TV. Solid entertainment; I'll be out there for the AAU tournaments later in the month.

6) Illinois got good news: big man Mike Thorne got a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA, very important for John Groce's team.

5) More transfers, as number approaches 600 this year (there are 351 D-I teams):
-- Anthony Livingston goes from Arkansas State to Texas Tech.
-- Kendall Stephens goes from Purdue to Nevada

4) This will be the sixth NFL season for 49er QB Blaine Gabbert, who will have his sxith different head coach, sixth offensive coordinator, sixth QB coach. Oy.

3) Why would the Ravens intentionally break the NFL rule about not using full pads during rookie minicamps? Sounds like they did just that.

2) Minnesota Twins are 4-2 against the Cleveland Indians, 0-15 against the rest of the AL Central. No bueno. Minnesota is 5-12 in games where the winning run scores from the 7th inning on.

1) Werid story about Robert Griffin III and his relationship with his coaches in Washington; if that story is remotely true, Daniel Snyder is the worst owner in the NFL and the Browns may have made a colossal mistake acquiring RGIII, who appears to be a complete jerk if you believe the article, which is excerpted up above.

Hottest team: Giants (7-0 last seven)
Johnny Cueto followed Madison Bumgarner's lead and pitched a complete game of his own in last night's 2-1 win over San Diego. Cueto continued San Francisco’s fantastic run of quality pitching, going the distance against the Padres for the second time this season. Bruce Bochy will certainly have a rested bullpen for this series finale as a result, but is hoping for another strong start from Jeff Samardzija (5-2, 2.88), whose worst outing thus far in 2016 came against the Pads.

Samardzija gave up five runs in just 5.2 innings and still got the win in a 13-9 home win. He's allowed four runs in the last 23.2 innings, which fits right in since the Giants have given up just nine runs over the past six games. San Francisco used the run to grab a 2.5-game lead over the Dodgers and Rockies in the NL West. It has seen the ‘under’ prevail in 10 of its last 11 games. James Shields (2-5, 3.12) takes the ball for host San Diego and has allowed more than a single run just once in his last four starts. He was a hard-luck 1-0 loser in an April 26 duel with Cueto. These NL West foes get together next week at AT&T Park after the Giants host the Cubs this weekend.

Coldest team: Twins (3-15 last 18)
The Blue Jays received consideration for this spot, having lost a league-high five straight at home, but they'll hit the road looking to get healthy against Minnesota, which has only won three series all season, two of which have come against Cleveland. The Twins were just swept by Detroit, getting outscored 23-13 over the three losses.
Minnesota has only played three home dates this month, but have lost its last six at Target Field, last winning on April 26. Ervin Santana (1-2, 3.38), coming off his first victory in a May 14 win over the Tribe, has been erratic thus far. Toronto will counter with Marco Estrada (1-2, 2.89), who hasn't won since his first start on April 10. He's earned no-decisions in four of his last five despite giving up a single run in three of those.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Sale (8-0, 1.67 ERA)
Sale will be looking to become the first pitcher to start a season 9-0 since Brandon Webb managed to in '08. Thus far, he's won every time out and hasn't given up more than two runs in a single appearance in his last six, a streak that dates back to April 9. Sale is coming off a complete game win over the Yankees last Friday and should have a fresh arm. Collin McHugh (4-3, 5.58) will pitch for the Astros and has won his last three decisions.

Coldest pitcher: Jeff Locke (1-3, 5.45 ERA)
The Pirates lefty closed April by pitching six shutout innnings in Denver, but he's been a mess in May, giving up 12 earned runs in 18.1 innings and walking six and striking just 10 over three starts. The Pirates haven't won in a single one of his outings this months, but are out to claim three of four from the Braves. Atlanta ace Julio Teheran allowed just one run yesterday after his teammates surrendered 20 over the first two games of this series, so Pittsburgh will be looking to rally in the finale against Mike Foltynewicz (1-1, 2.89).

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (7-2 last nine)
Colorado has followed up its rather strong pitching at Coors Field by surrendering just three runs during the first two games of their nine-game road trip. Of course, they've only scored three runs themselves, splitting with the St. Louis and making a hard-luck loser out of lefty Chris Rusin, who shined but was denied in Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Adam Wainwright. Hard-throwing Jon Gray (1-2, 4.71) takes the mound for the rubber game of the series finale and has allowed just four runs in his last 20 innings, sporting a 24-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The Cards counter with Michael Wacha (2-4, 3.23), who has lost his last four decisions.

Biggest OVER run: Indians (9-3-1 last 13)
Cleveland had outscored the Reds 28-7 over the first two games of this series, then grabbed in-state bragging rights for the season in style, or heartbreaking fashion as far as Cincinnati is concerned. Rajai Davis tied last night's game with a two-run homer in the top of the 9th, extending Cincy's bullpen woes, while Francisco Lindor ended up winning it in the 12th with a homer that held up as the difference. The Indians have scored at least seven runs in six games during this stretch despite seeing heavy-hitter Michael Brantley return to the DL earlier towards the beginning of this run. They'll look to complete the sweep by sending unbeaten Josh Tomlin (5-0, 3.82) to the mound against rookie Tim Adleman (1-1, 3.38), who comes off his first career loss.

Matchup to watch: Nationals at Mets
Bryce Harper is an astounding 0-for-20 in his career against Matt Harvey (3-5, 4.93), striking out seven times. Seeing whether that streak will end is worth tuning in alone, but the fact Stephen Strasburg (6-0, 2.95) is looking to remain perfect makes it spicier. He’s 4-0 on the road, winning every one of his outings and allowing just five runs in 27 innings. He was 1-2 against New York last season, but has had his share against the Mets over the years. His mastery of Harper suggests Harvey should have a better record than just 3-3 against the Nats over his career, but he’s had a few hard-luck losses in spite of a 1.78 career ERA. Washington will be facing a 2016 version that has often looked unrecognizable, coming off giving up a season-worst 11 hits and five runs in just 5.2 innings in Colorado. He’s yet to get out of the seventh inning, so we’ll see if the Dark Knight can rise up here to take out Strasburg’s perfect mark. Harvey has won the previous two head-to-head matchups.

Betcha didn’t know: Although the Angels got out of the gate slowly, it's still wild that Wednesday's win marked just their second sellout of the season, the first since falling to the Cubs 9-0 on Opening night. The Freeway Series is good for business, even if a lot of those fans that come to Angel Stadium arrive dressed in blue. With catcher Geovany Soto going on the DL, the bad injury luck has continued, but L.A. has won five of six for the first time all season and sends Jhoulys Chacin (1-2, 4.81) to the mound for the second time since acquiring him from Atlanta. He pitched well in his debut, allowing just two runs over seven innings in Seattle last Saturday. A win over the Dodgers would be the Angels' first Freeway Series triumph since 2012. The teams tied in '13 and the Dodgers had won eight of 10 entering this season. It would probably help the cause if Adrian Gonzalez misses a second straight game due to back tightness. He's questionable.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-160) at Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Padres (+135) vs. Giants

Biggest line move:
Rockies (+138 to +115) at Cardinals

LEADING OFF: Sale goes for 9-0, Strasburg faces Harvey
May 19, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

SALE ON

Chris Sale (8-0, 1.67 ERA) tries to become the majors' first nine-game winner when the White Sox host the Astros. Sale would be just the second White Sox pitcher to begin 9-0 after Eddie Cicotte won his first 12 starts in 1919. The last major leaguer to start 9-0 was Brandon Webb in 2008. Collin McHugh (4-3, 5.58) pitches for Houston.

ROUND 3

Washington ace Stephen Strasburg (6-0, 2.95 ERA) and Mets RHP Matt Harvey (3-5, 4.93) square off for the third time in the majors. Harvey has beaten Strasburg in both previous matchups, but things are going much better for the Nationals star this season. Strasburg recently agreed to a $175 million, seven-year contract, and Washington has won his past 12 starts dating to last year. Meanwhile, Harvey, not eligible for free agency until after the 2018 season, is struggling through the toughest stretch of his career. He'll try to extend his dominance against slugger Bryce Harper - the reigning NL MVP is 0 for 20 with seven strikeouts and three walks vs. Harvey.

GREEN GIANTS

The Athletics send out the suddenly unstoppable duo of Khris Davis and Danny Valencia to begin a four-game series against the Yankees. Davis followed Tuesday's three-homer performance - which included a walk-off grand slam- with another homer Wednesday in an 8-1 win over the Rangers. Valencia, meanwhile, had a three-homer game on May 15 and is hitting .414 with six homers this month.

FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Brad Ausmus made headlines with his rant and ejection from Monday night's win against Minnesota. Now he's making a little money off it, too. Ausmus donated the sweatshirt and cap he used to cover home plate during his argument, and MLB.com Auctions has made both items available in a weeklong auction. By 6 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, 13 bids had pushed the price up to $360. ''I wasn't proud of the tirade, but let's get something good out of it,'' Ausmus said.

GRAY MATTER

Jon Gray (2-2, 4.71) has been dominant of late for the Rockies and tries to keep that up in a start at St. Louis. Gray was the third overall pick in the 2013 draft and has a 1.80 ERA over his last three starts. Gray's average fastball velocity has spiked nearly a full mph to 95.3 this season, helping him land among the league leaders in strikeouts-per-nine-innings.
