Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Giants win 1-0 for second consecutive day, first time they've won consecutive games 1-0 since August, 1980.

-- Padres lost in 17 innings Sunday, then on a messed-up pop-up Monday, wasting lot of good pitching by starters Rea, Pomeranz.

-- Sharks 6, Blues 3-- San Jose is one game away from Stanley Cup finals.

-- Royals lost Alex Gordon for 4-6 weeks with a broken hand.

-- Draymond Green will play tonight; he got fined but the league backed off on his suspension- the league prefers good TV ratings to actual justice.

-- Atlanta Braves have five of the first 80 picks in the June 9 amateur draft.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Major league baseball teams aren't allowed to play more than 20 days in a row, so players on Colorado/Pittsburgh had to vote to play Monday, after Sunday's game was rained out in the second inning.

Pirates will now take the field 34 days in a row, Colorado 27, but playing yesterday was better than the Rockies flying in for one day later this season.

12) With Lucas Duda out for an extended time bith back issues, would the Mets trade for a 3B, move David Wright to first? He has been struggling with throws, anyway, this could be the time to put him at first base.

11) Interesting matchup in Chicago tonight: Indians are 7-0 when Josh Tomlin starts on the mound, White Sox are 9-0 when Chris Sale pitches.

10) White Sox announcer Steve Stone was talking about former Braves' slugger Rico Carty (.299 career BA, 204 HRs). Apparently Carty wasn't a trusting soul-- he kept his wallet in hsi uniform pants while he was playing. Seriously.

9) On the Pirate game yesterday afternoon, Colorado announcers were saying that when he played for the Bronx Bombers, New York coaches tried to get Dominic Cervelli to quit and become a minor league coach, like Crash Davis in Bull Durham.

Cervelli just signed a three-year, $31M extension; hope he sends a copy of his checks to New York, so they can see how wrong they were.

8) I've spent a lot of time keeping score at baseball games, was even an official scorer in the minor leagues for two years, but if I started keeping score again, I'd have to change the way I kept score, because of shifting defenses.

A good scorecard is something you can look at six months later and tell what went on in that game, even if you never saw the game. Jotting down "5-3" is no longer enough, because the 3B ("5") might have shifted to the right side of the infield. Now you need to take notes and be more descriptive, in order to be more accurate.

7) Raptors 105, Cavaliers 99- Why do teams play so much better at home?

6) Trevon Blueitt is going back to Xavier; the Musketeers have their top four guys on the perimeter back and are a top 25 team.

5) Drivers in this year's Indianapolis 500 represent 11 different countries.

4) In his last 1,001 innings pitched, Clayton Kershaw's ERA is 1.995.

3) Players who have come to bat with most men on base this season:
Rizzo 150, Polanco 147, Pujols 143, Abreu 137.

2) Players with 100+ PA who have driven in the highest %age of baserunners:
Bruce 26.7%, Betts 24.2%, Markakis 24.2%, Bradley Jr 23.4%

1) Players with 100+ PA who have driven in the lowest %age of baserunners
Gennett 1-64, MTaylor 2-68, Norris 3-85.

Hottest team: Yankees (7-2 last nine)

New York started its West Coast trip with consecutive losses at Arizona. The Yankees avoided the sweep in Phoenix with a win in the finale, then followed that up with a four-game sweep at Oakland. In the final three victories over the A’s, the Yankees scored 18 runs as they pulled within one win of the .500 mark on the season. The Bronx Bombers have played well at Yankee Stadium recently by winning nine of their 13 home contests as the Blue Jays head to the Big Apple tonight.

Coldest team: Reds (0-8 last eight)

It’s been a tough stretch for Cincinnati of late as the Reds were swept by the Indians and Mariners in interleague action. The Reds hung with the Dodgers on Monday night, but were shut out by Clayton Kershaw, 1-0 as +325 underdogs to fall to 3-15 on the road this season. Since last August, the Reds have dropped seven straight meetings with the Dodgers, including four consecutive defeats at Chavez Ravine. Cincinnati has lost 13 of its past 15 games overall, while posting a 1-5 record in Game 2’s of a road series.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Tillman, Orioles (6-1, 2.61 ERA)

Both Stephen Strasburg and Chris Sale enter Tuesday’s action undefeated, but Tillman is riding a five-game winning streak. The Baltimore right-hander has compiled six consecutive quality starts, even though five of those outings came at Camden Yards. Tillman has struck out 38 batters in his past five trips to the mound, while scattering four hits in 6.1 innings of a 5-2 victory over the Mariners his last time out. The Orioles travel to Houston tonight as Tillman won at Minute Maid Park in his last appearance there in May 2014.

Coldest pitcher: Shelby Miller, Diamondbacks (1-5, 6.64 ERA)

No other pitcher in baseball has struggled from a win-loss standpoint over the last year more than Miller as his teams (Atlanta and Arizona) own a 6-27 record in his past 33 starts. The D-backs are 1-4 in Miller’s past five starts, as the right-hander has allowed 17 hits and six earned runs in his last two starts against the Yankees and Giants. Miller has put together only one quality start in nine trips to the mound this season, but Arizona has played well on the road recently by winning seven of the last nine games away from Chase Field.

Biggest UNDER run: Mariners (3-0 last three)

The current three-game ‘under’ streak for Seattle isn’t overwhelming, but the Mariners continue to struggle to score runs at home against the Athletics this season. Oakland swept Seattle at Safeco Field in early April as the Mariners were held to four runs in three losses. The A’s blanked the Mariners in Monday’s series opener in Seattle, 5-0, marking the fourth ‘under’ between these teams in four games at Safeco. Oakland’s Kendall Graveman takes the mound tonight as the A’s are 3-1 to the ‘under’ in his past four starts, including an ‘under’ at home against the Mariners earlier this month.

Biggest OVER run: Tigers (7-2-2 last 11)

Detroit’s offense has woken up of late by scoring 47 runs in the first seven games of its homestand. The Tigers plated five runs in Monday’s victory over the Phillies, as Detroit improved to 6-1-2 to the ‘over’ in the last nine contests at Comerica Park. Justin Verlander makes the start for the Tigers against the Phillies, as Detroit has eclipsed the ‘over’ in three of his five home outings that includes one push, while four of those games have seen a combined nine runs or more scored.

Matchup to watch: Cubs vs. Cardinals

Chicago has suddenly lost three straight games after dropping back-to-back contests by one run apiece. The Cubs finished off its series at San Francisco with a 1-0 defeat to Madison Bumgarner and the Giants on Sunday, then squandered a 3-1 lead in a 4-3 walk-off loss to the rival Cardinals on Monday. St. Louis pulled even at home with a 13-13 record at Busch Stadium following Monday’s win, as Michael Wacha looks to get on track tonight. Wacha is winless in his last five starts, while allowing 16 runs in his past three trips to the mound in only 14 innings of work. Chicago looks to halt its longest losing streak of the season behind Jason Hammel, who yielded a season-high four earned runs in a 5-3 loss at Milwaukee in his last start.

Betcha didn’t know:

The Royals have won each of Edinson Volquez’s last four starts against the Twins since April 2015, including a 4-3 home victory last month. Volquez has allowed two earned runs or less in each of those outings, as Kansas City has won seven straight meetings with Minnesota, including a 4-0 mark this season.

Biggest public favorite:
Red Sox (-250) vs. Rockies

Biggest public underdog: Cubs (+100) at Cardinals

Biggest line move: Angels (+115 to +105) at Rangers

LEADING OFF: Sale seeks 10-0 start, Odor appeals suspension
May 24, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

A PERFECT 10?

Chris Sale (9-0, 1.58 ERA) tries to become the majors' first 10-game winner this season when the White Sox host Cleveland. Sale has thrown consecutive complete games with an average of 103 pitches. He faces another unbeaten hurler in Josh Tomlin (6-0, 3.56) - the pitchers have combined for 92 strikeouts and 15 walks.

ODOR APPEALS

Rougned Odor will have his appeal heard regarding his eight-game suspension from Major League Baseball for punching Toronto's Jose Bautista. The appeal will be heard by MLB executive vice president John McHale. If it is upheld, Odor would have to begin serving the penalty immediately.

WE MEET AGAIN

Stephen Strasburg (7-0, 2.80 ERA) and Matt Harvey (3-6, 5.77) face each other for the second time in six days. Strasburg and the Nationals came out way ahead in the first meeting, a 9-1 victory in which the right-hander struck out 10 and pitched one-run ball for six innings. The struggling Harvey had his worst start yet, allowing nine runs (six earned) over 2 2/3 innings.

HOT YANKS

Hard-throwing Nathan Eovaldi (4-2, 4.44) and the Yankees try to keep rolling against the Blue Jays. Eovaldi has won three straight decisions behind a 2.84 ERA and ranks second among major league starters with an average fastball velocity of 96.8 mph - Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard is first at 98 mph, per Fangraphs. The Yankees, meanwhile, have won five straight and can pull to .500 for the first time since April 14 with a win.

SHARK MONTH

Jeff Samardzija (6-2, 2.66) tries to extend his May dominance when the Giants host San Diego. The right-hander has gone at least 7 2/3 innings in each of his four starts this month and has a 1.42 ERA in that time. Last time out, he struck out eight Padres and allowed just one run over eight innings.

BACK ON TRACK?

Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi (1-2, 3.81 ERA) is scheduled to pitch in Miami against Tom Koehler (2-4, 4.71). Odorizzi won his most recent start after going winless in his first eight this year. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash on Odorizzi: ''We've got to get back to being a little more efficient with our pitches. Odo is the one guy that you feel like he's always in control, but it seems he's so confident he can make the pitch to that outer edge, and if he doesn't make it he's going to try to go there again. And sometimes that's what puts him behind. If he comes out and attacks the zone like we know he can, it will open up that ability to really spot up those pitches once he gets ahead in the count.''

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- NFL awarded Super Bowls to Atlanta-Miami-LA; two of those three cities are getting new stadiums, which is not a coincidence.

-- Nationals 7, Mets 4-- Matt Harvey wouldn't asnwer questions after game. Uh-oh.

-- Bengals' TE Tyler Eifert hurt his ankle in the Pro Bowl, had it operated on this week, may miss Cincinnati's season opener. What took so long?

-- BYU's football team has a tough September: Arizona, @ Utah, then UCLA, West Virginia at home. They also visit Michigan State, Boise State, Cincinnati later on.

-- 28 college football teams changed head coaches this year, 22% of all I-A teams.

-- Oklahoma City 118, Golden State 94-- Thunder go up 3-1; defending champs are in real trouble- they gave up 70+ points in first half of this game.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings.......

13) Under Armour, UCLA signed a 15-year, $280M apparel/shoe deal this week, which will make entitled athletes in football/basketball complain that they're not going to get a piece of that pie. They are getting a free college education, so there's that.

12) In a probably-related development, Pac-12 football teams will play fewer 10:30 kickoff games, in part so Under Armour brand can get more eastern exposure on TV.

11) Monday night in Miami, Logan Morrison took a marginal pitch for a strike and before the TV people could mute their field mikes, Morrison unleashed a string of obscenities against plate umpire Lance Barksdale. Good stuff.

10) Former NBA vet Kerry Kittles signed on as an assistant coach at Princeton.

9) ACC-Big 14 basketball challenge is a mere six months away; Michigan State-Duke is the premere matchup. UNC-Indiana, Ohio State-Virginia, Purdue-Louisville are some of the other featured games.

8) Devin Watson, who scored 20.3 ppg as a soph at San Francisco LY, transferred to San Diego State, where he will sit out this year, then play two more years. More good news for Steve Fisher; Malik Pope dropped out of the NBA Draft, will go back to school for another year. Decisions like that will mean a lot next winter.

7) Delaware Blue Hens finally hired a basketball coach, Notre Dame assistant coach Martin Inglesby, who has ties to the Philadelphia area. Plus Mike Brey used to be the Delaware coach, so that helps. Delaware has very few players; hiring a coach on May 24 is not the ideal way to run an athletic program.

6) Looking thru all-time college records today, noticed that Rams' QB Case Keenum holds I-A records for most career passing yards (19,217) and pssing TDs (217). it didn't prevent the Rams from spending a king's ransom on acquiring Jared Goff to take Keenum's job, but those records are still impressive.

5) Are there any phone booths left in this country? Was watching a movie the other night and someone ran to a phone booth to make a call, which automatically makes it a fairly old movie, I guess.

4) Was doing NFL research today; Carolina beat the Buccaneers twice LY, 37-23 and 38-10. Panthers scored nine TDs in the two games: two by the defense, with five of the seven TDs scored by the offense coming on drives of less than 50 yards.

3) NHL's Florida Panthers had 103 points this year, most they've ever had in their 23-year history, but they just fired their scouting dorector who had been with the team for 14 years, thru seven head coaches and five GMs. There is a battle there between the analytics people and the old school people, and analytics people are winning.

2) Long time ago, November 1993, I'm an assistant high school basketball coach, in my first year at this school, whose program was a mess. Our head coach is a great guy but he was in over his head at this job. After the second game of the year (we had won the first game), there were some attitude problems in the group.

Coach said something after that game that I've never forgotten: "So we lose a game and the rats start jumping off the ship", one of the all-time best quotes I've heard.

That is where the Warriors are now; their bandwagon is emptying quickly; nitwit media people have declared this series over, even though nine NBA teams have rallied from 3-1 deficits to win their series. Steve Kerr will probably rally his troops with an "us against the world" speech, since no one thinks Golden State can rally now.

We'll see.

1) White Sox TV voice Jason Benetti has an inspirational story; he was born with cerebral palsy, but never let that stop him. He went to college at Syracuse, then got his law degree from Wake Forest. He later joined ESPN and now has a job broadcasting ball in the major leagues, and he is very good at it. Good for him.

Hottest team: Tigers (8-1 last nine)

Detroit began this month with a dreadful 2-11 mark and questions regarding Brad Ausmus’ status as manager. The Tigers have turned things around by winning all three series on their current homestand against the Twins, Rays, and Phillies, while going for the sweep of Philadelphia. Detroit received a dominating pitching performance from Justin Verlander in last night’s 3-1 victory, as Anibal Sanchez looks to turn things around this afternoon. Sanchez has allowed 17 earned runs in his last four outings, all Tigers’ losses, but all three of his victories this season have come during the day.

Coldest team: Twins (1-8 last nine)

If there is one team that can hit the reset button on this season, it’s the Twins. Minnesota owns the worst record in baseball at 11-34, which includes five losses to the defending champion Royals. Kansas City goes for the sweep of Minnesota this afternoon at Target Field, as the Twins have allowed 17 runs in the first two defeats. The Twins have dropped 11 of their last 12 games at home, while trying to avoid their fourth home sweep of the season. Tyler Duffey takes the mound for Minnesota in today’s matinee, as the Twins are winless in his two home starts this season after posting a perfect 4-0 record in his four outings at Target Field in 2015.

Hottest pitcher: Jake Arrieta, Cubs (8-0, 1.29 ERA)

Chris Sale suffered his first loss of the season in 10 starts last night as another Chicago ace tries to avoid a slip-up today. Arrieta continues to dominate following his Cy Young run last season as the Cubs’ right-hander has given up two earned runs or less in eight of nine starts. In five road starts, Arrieta has compiled a 5-0 record with an ERA of 0.97, but he lost twice in two starts at Busch Stadium last season.

Coldest pitcher: Scott Kazmir, Dodgers (3-3, 5.23 ERA)

Los Angeles looks to pull off the sweep against Cincinnati, as the Reds have lost 16 of 19 road games this season. Kazmir tries to get on track after dropping three of his four starts at Chavez Ravine this season, while allowing at least four runs in six of his past eight trips to the mound. The veteran southpaw has been taken deep seven times in his past four starts, while his teams (Astros and Dodgers) are 2-6 since last August when he is listed as a favorite of at least -140 (opened as -160 favorite tonight).

Biggest UNDER run:
Rangers (4-1 last five)

Texas has stepped up its pitching recently by allowing seven runs in its previous five contests, while giving up three runs in the first two games of its series against the Angels. Colby Lewis continues to be a work-horse on the mound for Texas by tossing seven innings in five consecutive starts, as the right-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his past six trips to the mound. After going 1-4 against the Angels last season, Lewis yielded two earned runs in seven innings of a 4-2 victory over Los Angeles in late April as the game easily finished ‘under’ the total of 9 (tonight’s total is 9 ½).

Biggest OVER run: Pirates (9-3 last 12 at home)

Pittsburgh’s offense has torn up Arizona pitching this season by scoring 33 runs in four games (that includes one game scoring only one run). The Pirates lit up Shelby Miller in last night’s 12-1 drubbing in the series opener at PNC Park to cash the fifth ‘over’ in eight games on their current homestand. In four of their six victories on this homestand, the Bucs have plated at least eight runs, while rebounding in a big way after getting swept at home by the Cubs earlier this month. Jeff Locke takes the mound for Pittsburgh tonight, as the southpaw has eclipsed the ‘over’ in six of his last seven starts, including a 3-0 mark to the ‘over’ at home this season.

Matchup to watch: Orioles vs. Astros

Houston snapped a four-game losing streak in Tuesday’s 13-inning walk-off win over Baltimore thanks to a Carlos Correa RBI single. The Astros are mired in a hole inside the AL West following a playoff appearance last season, but Houston has won four of the last five home matchups with Baltimore. The Orioles have scored three runs or less in seven of their past 10 road contests, while posting a 5-5 record in this span. Tyler Wilson has pitched well for Baltimore away from Camden Yards as the O’s are 4-1 in his past five road starts since last season, including a 2-0 mark in 2016.

Betcha didn’t know: Indians’ right-hander Corey Kluber is facing the White Sox for the first time this season today. The former Cy Young winner was winless in three starts against Chicago in 2015, while allowing six earned runs each in two of those defeats. Following Cleveland’s victory at Boston in Kluber’s last outing, the Indians improved to 5-16 in the right-hander’s previous 21 road starts since the start of the 2015 season.

Biggest public favorite: Mariners (-180) vs. Athletics

Biggest public underdog: Orioles (+125) at Astros

Biggest line move: Diamondbacks (+115 to +105) at Pirates

LEADING OFF: Arrieta aims for 20; Bradley halfway to Joe D
May 25, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

GOING FOR 20

Jake Arrieta (8-0, 1.29 ERA) tries to win his 20th straight regular-season decision when the Cubs face the Cardinals. Chicago has won each of Arrieta's last 22 starts, in part because it is averaging eight runs per game over Arrieta's nine outings this season. Arrieta can tie Chris Sale for the major league lead in wins.

HALFWAY THERE

Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. tries to extend his hitting streak to 29 games when Boston hosts Colorado. Chad Bettis (4-2, 4.18 ERA) pitches for the Rockies. Bradley had two more hits Tuesday night and is halfway to Joe DiMaggio's major league record of 56 consecutive games set in 1941.

SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE

Mets lefty Steven Matz (6-1, 2.81 ERA) brings a six-game winning streak into the series finale against Washington. He has never lost on the road (5-0) or faced the Nationals. Washington counters with Tanner Roark (3-3, 2.89), who is 5-0 with a 3.05 ERA in 11 career appearances against the Mets.

GETTING CLOSE

Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez is expected to play a second rehab game with Double-A Trenton as he gets ready to return from a strained right hamstring. The 40-year-old Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with two singles and an RBI for the Thunder against New Hampshire on Tuesday night. New York, which has won six straight, is leaning toward activating him from the disabled list for a trip that starts Friday at Tampa Bay but could shorten Rodriguez's time in the minors if he feels good.

STILL RAKING

Ichiro Suzuki looks to start a new streak after his recent hitting tear ended with an 0-for-5 showing Tuesday. Suzuki tied a Marlins record with 10 hits in the previous three games and became the first 42-year-old to go on such a streak since Cap Anson in 1894. Suzuki has 2,960 hits in his major league career and 4,238 between the majors and Japan - the latter total is 18 behind Pete Rose's career mark.

TURNING TO JOSE

For all the fanfare around Chris Sale this season, Jose Quintana (5-3, 1.98 ERA) has pitched awfully well for the White Sox, too. Cleveland roughed up Sale for six runs in 3 1/3 innings Tuesday and tries to do the same against Quintana, who has lost his last two starts in part because of poor run support - Chicago scored just one run in each of those defeats.

COAST TO COAST

The Marlins and Rays head to the Gulf side of Florida to continue their four-game series, with LHP Justin Nicolino (2-2, 4.30) going for Miami and RHP Matt Andriese (3-0, 2.11) trying to win his fourth consecutive start for Tampa Bay. Nicolino is winless in his last three outings, with a 5.63 ERA during that stretch.

Pirates pitcher Vogelsong dealing multiple facial fractures
May 24, 2016

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Ryan Vogelsong remained hospitalized with swelling and multiple facial fractures on Tuesday, a day after the veteran took a 92 mph fastball to the head from Colorado pitcher Jordan Lyles.

Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk said Vogelsong was ''in good spirits'' but added that doctors would not be able to determine the extent of the damage around Vogelsong's left eye until the swelling subsided.

Vogelsong was batting with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning Monday when a Lyles pitch caught Vogelsong flush. He remained on the ground for several minutes, though Tomczyk said Vogelsong did not lose consciousness and does not have symptoms of a concussion.

''He remembers everything,'' Tomczyk said. ''He did not lose consciousness, which is important. He was scared, yes ... but he is a very positive guy.''

The 38-year-old Vogelsong did experience some vision loss in the immediate aftermath, but Tomczyk said Vogelsong's eye was ''somewhat open'' by Tuesday. Doctors believe there is no significant damage to the eye itself, though it could be a while before there is any official diagnosis, Tomczyk said. He expects the swelling to take significantly longer than the typical 3-5 days to go down.

Pittsburgh catcher Francisco Cervelli stopped by to check on Vogelsong on Tuesday and manager Clint Hurdle hopes to visit in the next couple days.

''He's in a better place (now) than he was (Monday),'' Hurdle said.

The Pirates placed Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list and recalled reliever A.J. Schugel from Triple-A Indianapolis.
