Tuesday's MLB Game of the Day: Cardinals at Cubs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a 3-2 win Monday, halting the Cubs’ streaks of three straight overall wins and five in a row against division rivals.

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (A: +120, H: -140, Total: 8.5)

If the St. Louis Cardinals are going to catch the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central race, they’ll probably have to do it by dominating the head-to-head matchup. The Cardinals will try for a second straight win over the Cubs – and their seventh consecutive road victory – when the rivals square off Tuesday in the middle contest of their three-game series.

St. Louis snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a 3-2 win Monday, halting the Cubs’ streaks of three straight overall wins and five in a row against division rivals. It was a rare home defeat for the Cubs, who are 25-9 at Wrigley Field and still lead the second-place Cardinals by 11 1/2 games. The friendly confines also have been kind to Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright, who is 9-1 with a 3.33 ERA in his career at Wrigley Field going into Tuesday’s start. Right-hander Jason Hammel takes the mound for the Cubs looking for his third win against the Cardinals this season, as he allowed two runs over 13 1/3 innings in the first two meetings – both in St. Louis.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), ABC 7 (Chicago)

INJURY REPORT:

Cardinals - C B. Pena (15-Day DL, knee), RP J. Walden (15-Day DL, shoulder).

Cubs - CF D. Fowler (15-Day DL, hamstring), 2B T. La Stella (15-Day DL, hamstring), LF J. Soler (15-Day DL, hamstring).

WEATHER REPORT: Clear skies, temperatures in the 80's, and a slight 5-10 mph breeze blowing out to right field will welcome the Cubs and Cardinals Tuesday night. It'll be a perfect night for baseball at Wrigley Field. Get your Old Style ready, this should be a fun night.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (5-4, 4.78 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jason Hammel (7-2, 2.26)

Wainwright struggled to start the season but has posted a 2.50 ERA over his last six starts. The 34-year-old put together his strongest outing of the year Wednesday against Houston, striking out six and allowing four hits over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision. Wainwright is 12-7 with a 3.97 ERA in 38 games (29 starts) versus the Cubs, and he allowed three runs over six innings in a no-decision against them on May 23 in St. Louis.

Hammel continued his outstanding first half with a strong outing at Washington on Wednesday, limiting the Nationals to one run and five hits over seven innings in a no-decision. The 33-year-old has been especially tough at home, going 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA in five starts at Wrigley Field. Hammel is 4-3 with a 4.60 ERA in nine starts against St. Louis.

TRENDS:

* Cardinals are 6-0 in their last 6 road games.
* Cubs are 8-1 in Hammel's last 9 starts vs. National League Central.
* Over is 4-0 in Wainwright's last 4 road starts vs. a team with a winning record.
* Under is 13-3 in Cubs last 16 home games.
* Cardinals are 6-1 in Wainwright's last 7 road starts vs. Cubs.
* Cardinals are 14-3 in their last 17 games with Carlson behind home plate.

CONSENSUS: Early wagering is seeing the public firmly on the side of the Cubs with 66 percent of the picks on the home side. This isn't surprising with a very public team like Chicago getting a very reasonable price of -140. The total was late being released (as always with games played at Wrigley Field) and there was no Consensus data at the time of publication of this preview.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- This is the first time a full moon happened on the first day of sunmer since 1967.

-- Texas Rangers are 16-4 in one-run games this season.

-- Since May 13, Mariners are 3-10 in games where winning run scores from the 7th inning on-- over is 12-2-1 in their last fifteen series openers.

-- Jay points out that the last time an SEC team didn't win a game in the College World Series was in 2007.

-- Cal-Hawai'i are opening college football season in Australia; Georgia Tech will be playing Boston College in Ireland.

-- Orioles played at home Sunday, flew to Texas for a makeup game Monday, then back to Baltimore for Tuesday night's game with San Diego.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings.......

13) New pet peeve: the phrase "maintenance day", a euphemism for "day off" in the modern world of baseball. Playing baseball is not that grueling, players do not need a day off every week (other than catchers, obviously).

Marcell Ozuna is hotter than hell, but he sat Tuesday because Ichiro Suzuki now has to play a couple days a week. Marlins must be making a fortune selling Ichiro gear in Japan as he approaches 3,000 major league hits. Christian Yelich sat Monday, Ozuna sat last night, despite his hitting two home runs on Monday. Oy.

12) When did the major leagues become more like Little League, where everyone has to play? Our society is getting soft as hell, and if I sound old saying that, so be it.

11) Dirk Nowtizki opted out of his contract with Dallas, turning down $8.7M to play with the Mavericks next year. Most everyone thinks he will re-sign with Dallas on a multi-year deal, but you never know in this world.

It should be noted here that Dallas hasn't been out of the first round of the playoffs since they won their first NBA title five years ago.

10) NHL teams are trading marginal players for draft picks rather than lose them in the upcoming expansion draft.

9) Skal Labissiere played 15.8 mpg for Kentucky LY, scoring 6.6 ppg, starting half the Wildcats' 36 games as a freshman.

Domantas Sabonis played 31.8 mpg for Gonzaga LY, scoring 17.6 ppg; he played 74 college games in his two years for the Bulldogs-- his dad is one of the greatest big men in European history.

If Labissiere is drafted before Sabonis tomorrow night, as many mock drafts suggest, I'm going to mock the NBA system, which values potential over performance.

8) The latest Big Ten media-rights contract will earn the league an average of $440 million annually over the next six years, with FOX and ESPN sharing the rights.

7) Miami Marlins' pitcher Paul Clemens lived in Miami for a while as a kid; his dad was the head of the FBI in South Florida.

6) Auburn, Michigan both have only two home football games before Halloween; on October 8 and October 29 for both teams. Not very courageous scheduling.

5) VCU's band director got the boot after they school couldn't come to a contract agreement with him. How much money can a band director make?

4) Yasmani Grandal's 3-run homer in bottom of 8th inning ruined a fine pitching performance by Tanner Roark. LA handed the Nationals their 4th loss in a row, 3-2.

3) Mets pushed back Noah Syndergaard's start Tuesday to line him up to pitch against division rival Washington down the road, then Bartolo Colon got KO'd by a line drive hit by the first batter of the game, but the Mets won anyway, 2-1.

2) For the next 40 days (until July 31), trade speculation will run rampant; Angels are in trouble, even with Mike Trout in CF. How do they raise their talent level? There has been suggestion of a Trout-to-Washington deal, with Nationals sending its three best minor leaguers to Anaheim-- Lucas Giolito, Trea Turner, Victor Robles.

1) If the baseball playoffs started today:
NL: Nationals-Cubs-Giants. Wild Cards: Dodgers-Mets
AL: Orioles-Indians-Rangers. Wild Cards: Royals-Red Sox

Hottest team: Dodgers (7-3 last 10)

Following an 8-6 loss to the Brewers to begin their homestand, the Dodgers haven’t lost since by running off five consecutive victories. The last two wins came against the NL East-leading Nationals in low-scoring affairs, while Los Angeles’ pitching staff has given up a total of five runs. In four of the five victories during this hot streak, the Dodgers have allowed two runs or fewer. 19-year old Julio Urias owns an 0-2 record in five starts for the Dodgers, but tossed five scoreless innings in his last outing against Milwaukee as he faces Washington tonight going for the sweep.

Coldest team: Rays (3-7 last 10)

It’s been a bad week for Tampa Bay since grabbing the first two games of its series against Seattle. The Mariners won the final contest at Tropicana Field last Thursday, beginning a tailspin for the Rays. Tampa Bay got swept at home by red-hot San Francisco and has lost the first two games of its series at Cleveland. The Rays have been lit up in this stretch by allowing at least five runs in each of their last six losses, while getting blanked by the Tribe on Tuesday. Chris Archer heads to the mound tonight for the Rays looking to avoid the sweep, as Tampa Bay owns a 1-5 record in his past six starts.

Hottest pitcher:
Cole Hamels, Rangers (7-1, 2.88 ERA)

Cincinnati snapped Texas’ seven-game winning streak last night with a 8-2 victory as Hamels tries to get the Rangers back on track this evening. Hamels is coming off a masterful performance in his last outing, scattering three hits in 7.2 scoreless innings of a 1-0 triumph at St. Louis as a short road underdog. Texas is 3-0 in Hamels’ last three starts (all as a ‘dog), as the southpaw has given up 11 hits and three earned runs in this stretch. However, the Rangers are 0-3 in his last three outings as a favorite, as Texas is a -210 favorite against Cincinnati tonight.

Coldest pitcher: Francisco Liriano, Pirates (4-7, 5.03 ERA)

Pittsburgh has dropped four straight starts made by Liriano, while scoring only five runs in this span. Liriano hasn’t been good in this stretch either by giving up 20 runs, including five home runs. Since posting a 3-1 record in his first four home starts, Liriano is winless in his last two outings at PNC Park. Last season, Liriano beat the Giants twice in two starts, including a 5-2 victory at PNC Park last August. It’s been a rough stretch overall for Pittsburgh, who has lost 11 of its past 13 contests.

Biggest UNDER run:
Red Sox (5-1 last six)

Boston’s explosive offense has been shut down in the first two games of its series against Chicago, scoring just two runs in two losses. The Red Sox have finished ‘under’ the total in four consecutive home games, while Boston’s pitching has allowed nine runs in this stretch. In the last 11 games played at Fenway Park, the Red Sox are 8-3 to the ‘under,’ as Eduardo Rodriguez toes the rubber tonight. Rodriguez is 3-1 to the ‘under’ this season for the Red Sox, but the southpaw has given up 14 earned runs in three June starts.

Biggest OVER run: Twins (8-1 last nine)

Two of the worst teams in baseball played in one of the most thrilling games of the season on Tuesday as Minnesota outlasted Philadelphia, 14-10. Both teams rallied from deficits as the Twins pulled away to post their fourth straight ‘over,’ and move to 11-1-1 to the ‘over’ in the past 13 games at Target Field. Minnesota extended its streak to 20 consecutive games in which its pitching staff has allowed at least four runs, as Kyle Gibson takes the mound tonight looking to improve on an ERA of 6.06 in six starts.

Matchup to watch: Rockies vs. Yankees

Somehow, Colorado has had New York’s number this season by winning each of the first three matchups. The Rockies swept a two-game series at Coors Field last week, while taking the opener in the Bronx on Tuesday, 8-4 as a +145 underdog. The Yankees try to avoid another sweep this afternoon as they send out CC Sabathia to the mound. The southpaw has allowed six earned runs in his previous seven outings, but New York owns a 4-3 record in this stretch. Jon Gray counters for Colorado as the right-hander has delivered five straight quality starts, while striking out 33 batters over the last month.

Betcha didn’t know: Since rallying from a 10-run deficit at San Diego on June 2, the Mariners have limped to a 2-9 record on the road in the last 11 games. Seattle has dropped each of its first two games in its four-game set at Detroit, as Hisashi Iwakuma tries to stop the bleeding for the Mariners. The M’s bullpen won’t feel a lot of pressure tonight as Iwakuma has pitched seven innings in each of his last five outings.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-230) vs. Cardinals

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+100) at Red Sox

Biggest line move: Mariners (+115 to +100) at Tigers

LEADING OFF: Syndergaard on 6 days of rest, Arrieta vs Cards
June 22, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

THOR'S DELAY

Pushed back a day in the rotation, Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard (7-2, 1.91 ERA) has won five straight decisions going into his start against LHP Danny Duffy (2-1, 3.17) and the Royals at Citi Field. Syndergaard won 2-0 in Kansas City when the teams split two games to open the season. Of course, he also earned New York's lone World Series victory last October, when he rankled the Royals by firing his first pitch above the head of leadoff hitter Alcides Escobar.

HOMETOWN ANTIHERO

Ace Jake Arrieta leads the Cubs against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field. The Farmington, Missouri native is 5-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 10 career starts against the Cardinals, allowing just one home run in 60 1/3 innings - a two-run shot to Randal Grichuk on May 25 this season. Arrieta has 26 strikeouts over his last 18 innings, spanning three starts.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT

Detroit rookie Michael Fulmer (7-2) starts against Hisashi Iwakuma (6-5, 2.43) of Seattle. Fulmer's five-start winning streak was snapped in his last start against Kansas City, but over his past six outings, the right-hander has allowed only two runs in 40 innings. Fulmer has the lowest ERA among all rookie pitchers, minimum 50 innings.

NOT A WALKING SHOE

Clayton Kershaw has a historically good 141-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio so far this season, but just a little ways down I-5, Matt Shoemaker (3-7, 4.50) has been nearly as impressive of late. The Angels right-hander goes into a start against Houston with a 55-to-2 K/BB ratio over his past six starts, although he's just 1-2 despite a 1.83 ERA in that time. The Astros counter with right-hander Lance McCullers (3-2, 4.24).

RANGERS ROLLING

Cole Hamels (7-1, 2.88) tries to help the Rangers extend their commanding lead in the AL West in a matchup against struggling Cincinnati. Hamels delivered 7 2/3 solid innings in a 1-0 win over St. Louis his last time out. Dan Straily (4-3, 3.66) is up for the Reds, who are trying to claw out of last place in the NL Central.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Knicks acquired Derrick Rose in a trade with Chicago; Rose has played in 166 of a possible 410 games the last five years and shot under 30% from the arc the last two years. Rose is entering the walk year of his contract.

-- From Chicago's side, it means Bulls are now probably keeping Jimmy Butler.

-- Pacers-Hawks-Jazz made a 3-way trade; Indiana gets Jeff Teague.

-- If you're Dez Bryant and you cause $100K in damage to the house you rented, it would probably be better if your landlord wasn't also a state senator.

-- Noah Syndergaard's elbow flared up yesterday, he left his start after six innings; all of a sudden, the Mets may be running short of healthy starting pitchers.

-- Penguins/Cavaliers both won championships this month, after firing their coach during the season; some nitwit baseball owner is going to hear that and........

Hottest team: Braves (6-1 last seven)

Atlanta still owns the worst record in the National League at 24-47, but the Braves have caught fire of late. In spite of getting shut out at Miami on Wednesday, the Braves have won six of their last seven games, which includes a three-game road sweep of the Mets last weekend. Atlanta has another shot at New York with the Mets invading Turner Field for four games starting tonight. In last weekend’s sweep, the Braves’ pitching staff limiting the Mets to four runs, while each victory came as an underdog of +165 or higher. Matt Harvey takes the mound for New York in the opener, as the Braves have beaten the right-hander in two of three matchups this season.

Coldest team: Pirates (2-9 last 11)

The wheels have fallen off the wagon for Pittsburgh, who blew a 6-1 lead in Wednesday’s 7-6 setback to San Francisco. The Pirates have won only twice since June 7, but the Bucs have faced the Mets, Cubs, Cardinals, and Giants in this span, which doesn’t add up to automatic victories. Pittsburgh’s pitching is to blame, allowing at least six runs in 10 of the past 12 defeats, while the Pirates have dropped six of their last seven games at PNC Park. Pittsburgh and San Francisco finish off their series today as Jon Niese looks to rebound off a pair of ugly starts in which he allowed 17 hits and 12 earned runs.

Hottest pitcher: Zack Greinke, Diamondbacks (10-3, 3.54 ERA)

Arizona continues its road trip at Colorado as the D-backs have won five of the first six games. Greinke heads to the mound in the opener at Coors Field going for his eighth consecutive victory. The former Cy Young winner owns an amazing 5-0 record on the road in six starts with an ERA of 1.47 away from Chase Field. However, Greinke is winless in two starts against the Rockies this season, giving up nine earned runs in 11 innings of work.

Coldest pitcher: James Shields, White Sox (2-9, 6.28 ERA)

Shields has turned into the ultimate fade recently, as the right-hander has been knocked around all season. In his final start with San Diego, Shields was tagged for 10 earned runs in 2.2 innings of a 16-4 loss at Seattle. Shields was dealt to the White Sox, but changing leagues hasn’t fixed matters as he has given up 21 earned runs in three starts with Chicago while tossing only 8.2 innings. The White Sox go for the four-game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park this afternoon as Shields looks for his first win in Boston since 2012.

Biggest UNDER run: Angels (5-1 last six)

Los Angeles returns home following a 2-4 road swing, as the Angels’ offense plated two runs or less four times. The Angels start a four-game series with the Athletics at home tonight, as two of their three games last weekend in Oakland finished ‘under’ the total. Four of the first six matchups between these AL West rivals this season have gone ‘under,’ as the teams are meeting in Anaheim for the first time in 2016. Tim Lincecum makes his second start as a member of the Angels, as the former Cy Young winner scattered four hits and allowed one earned run in six innings of a 7-1 victory over the A’s last Saturday.

Biggest OVER run:
Twins (5-0 last five)

Minnesota and Philadelphia played another exciting game at Target Field last night as the Twins edged the Phillies, 6-5. More importantly, the Twins cashed another ‘over’ at home, extending their streak to five at Target Field. The Twins also allowed at least four runs for the 21st straight game as the ‘over’ is an amazing 17-3-1 in this stretch. Since May 1, Ricky Nolasco has been nearly an automatic ‘over’ pitcher, going 8-1-1 in his last 10 starts as he heads to the mound in the series finale with the Phillies today.

Matchup to watch:
Cubs vs. Marlins

Chicago travels to South Florida for a four-game series with the surging Marlins, as the Cubs try to rebound after getting swept at home by the Cardinals. Miami is currently one game out of top spot in the NL Wild Card standings at 38-34 after winning six of its past eight contests. Chicago’s offense struggled in its home sweep to St. Louis, scoring only seven runs as the Cubs were swept for the first time this season. Jon Lester tries to get the Cubs back on track in tonight’s opener, as the southpaw is 5-0 in his past five starts, all as a favorite of at least -200. Chicago opened as a -175 road favorite tonight, as the Cubs own a 5-1 mark in Lester’s six away outings.

Betcha didn’t know:
The Reds may be sitting in last place of the NL Central, but Cincinnati has excelled recently in an odd situation. Cincinnati is riding a seven-game winning streak in series openers, while scoring at least seven runs in five of those victories. The Padres invade Great American Ballpark for a four-game series tonight as San Diego has compiled a 6-4 record in road series openers with three losses coming by one run.

Biggest public favorite:
Red Sox (-230) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Phillies (+130) at Twins

Biggest line move: Rockies (+145 to +140) vs. Diamondbacks

LEADING OFF: Shields tries for rebound, Greinke on the road
June 23, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

SLUMPING SHIELDS

Right-hander James Shields (2-9, 6.28) looks to end a terrible stretch for the White Sox. In three starts since being acquired from San Diego, Shields has given up 21 runs over 8 2/3 innings. He's also the majors' first pitcher since 2012 to allow six runs or more in four straight starts. Righty Rick Porcello (8-2, 3.76) looks to improve his Fenway Park record to 7-0 this season for the Red Sox.

ROAD WARRIOR

Diamondbacks right-hander Zack Greinke (10-3, 3.54) will face Rockies righty Eddie Butler (2-4, 6.26) as Arizona begins a four-game series at Colorado. In six road starts this season, Greinke is 5-0 with a 1.47 ERA, and is 7-4 lifetime with a 4.06 ERA against the Rockies.

BRAVE REMATCH

Mets right-hander Matt Harvey (4-9, 4.76) takes the mound in the opener of a four-game set against Atlanta. Righty Matt Wisler (3-7, 4.23) pitches for the last-place Braves, who beat Harvey and swept three games at Citi Field last weekend.

TIMMY'S TIME

Tim Lincecum (1-0, 1.50) makes his second start since his return to the majors following hip surgery last year. The longtime Giant made his Angels debut last weekend, limiting Oakland to a run on four hits over six innings in a 7-1 victory. He faces the Athletics again, this time facing off against Kendall Graveman (2-6, 4.87).

BIG CAT

Steven Moya, Detroit's 6-foot-6 slugging outfield prospect, tries to build off a two-homer game Wednesday night that tripled his career homer total in a series finale against Seattle. The powerful 24-year-old has hit 113 homers in 656 minor league games but went homerless in his first 31 games with Detroit before homering Sunday. The Tigers (37-35) are 4 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central.
