Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Golf course at Greenbrier, which hosts a PGA event July 7-10, is currently under an awful lot of water. Hard to believe they'll be playing there in two weeks.

-- Toronto CF Kevin Pillar makes the most spectacular catches of anyone in the big leagues, at least this season.

-- Road team won the Cardinals' last 13 games.

-- Home team won Jose Urias' first six major league starts.

-- Maximum rookie salary in the NHL is $925,000.

-- Scouting is an inexact scienece: Albert Pujols was a 13th-round draft pick.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Running diary of NBA Draft night......

Haven't done this in a long time, but this is a running diary of Thursday night's NBA Draft, with some baseball mixed in. Hope you enjoy......

7:05-- Rece Davis is ESPN's host for the draft; he is the best guy ESPN has, but I'm not sure they know it. Why did they let Mike Tirico get away?

7:07-- Mets acquired Kelly Johnson two weeks ago; he's batting 5th for them tonite, as their impotent offense brings back memories of their team at this time LY, before they traded for Yoenis Cespedes. They still have Cespedes, but they struggle to score.

7:10-- Why doesn't NBA TV cover the draft too, the way NFL Network does?

7:15-- The Celtics have eight picks tonight; kind of reduces their leverage in making a trade-- they HAVE TO trade some of those picks.

7:20-- They're having a telethon on Marlins' TV during their game with the Cubs- the best thing that could happen to the Marlins is if Jeffrey Loria put the team up for sale as part of the telethon, then Marlin fans could be rid of his foolishness.

7:23-- Marco Belinelli got traded to the Hornets. Really, he did.

7:25-- Dragan Bender is 18 years old, won't turn 19 until after the season starts. Then you have Buddy Hield, who played four years at Oklahoma and is 23. How much does that figure in factoring how much will these players improve?

Fran Fraschilla talks about the foreign players in the draft; it shows how ridiculous ESPN has become that Jay Williams was on the telecast before Fraschilla. Can never have enough Duke alums on a telecast, though.

7:29-- NBA salary cap is going to jump from $70M to $110M in two years? Oy.

7:31-- NBA commissioner Adam Silver is a tall, bald man with glasses; in other words, he is my hero.

7:37-- 76ers take Ben Simmons, who was 1-3 behind the arc at LSU LY. Kid is a real good passer, ut he is still a kid. Curious to see how he does in the pros; Simmons' dad played for Sixers' coach Brett Brown 27 years ago in Australia.

Simmons' sister is married to former NFL RB Michael Bush, who played for the Raiders/Bears in his six-year career, scoring 31 TDs.

7:44-- Simmons is 7th consecutive college freshman to go #1 in the draft.

7:46-- Lakers took Brandon Ingram with the #2 pick; at what point next fall will Luke Walton look at his team and ask "I left Golden State for this???"

7:50-- I wonder if Sam Hinkie would've taken Simmons, or would have have screwed that up too? Just because you went to a fancy school doesn't make you smart.

Worst thing about the draft is that they don't announce trades as they happen, so a kid drafted by one team may already have been dealt somewhere else. No bueno.

7:56-- Celtics drafted Jaylen Brown, who doesn't have an agent, thereby saving 3% in agents' fees-- rookie contracts are slotted, so no real need for an agent. Good for him.

8:07-- Suns took the 18-year old Bender, Minnesota took PG Kris Dunn, who will be a good fit with Tom Thibodeau's defensive teachings. You wonder if a kid isn't happy going somewhere like Minnesota, a franchise that has never won?

I mean, Dunn is rich now, but if he wanted to play for the Celtics or some other team, unless he gets traded, he's out of luck. As if being a millionaire is being out of luck.

8:15-- New Orleans takes Buddy Hield, who Jalen Rose compared to Voshon Lenard, who Rose went to high school with.

8:22-- Jalen Rose likes telling averyone how much money NBA players made in their career. Michael Redd made $101,991,325 in his career. He played in one All-Star tilt and 16 playoff games in his entire career, still made $102M. Nice.

8:27-- Sacramento takes Marquese Chriss. who scored 13.7 ppg at Washington- they then traded him to Phoenix, not sure for who. Chriss is a great athlete but is also prone to foul trouble. Translation: Mr Chriss is a project.

8:30-- Jay Bilas has Domantas Sabonis ranked ahead of Skal Labassiere, restoring my faith in mankind. This is my advice to teams guessing on marginal players:

Draft players who were productive in college
Draft players who were productive in college
Draft players who were productive in college....I rest my case.

8:40-- Milwaukee Bucks took Thon Maker, whose age is a question mark. Fraschilla likes him; the kid lived in Sudan until he was 6, then Australia for a while, then in this country, before moving to Canada. He apparently is a project; no one really seems to know. Bucks were one of three youngest NBA teams last year.

8:47-- Domantas Sabonis got picked #11, proving that I'm not a complete idiot (hold your jokes). I swore that if Sabonis went #20 in the draft, as ESPN's website claimed, then 10 NBA GMs needed to be fired. Sabonis is going to be a really good player.

He went #11 to the Magic, who then traded him and two others for Serge Ibaka, with Victor Oladipo one of the two guys going to Oklahoma with Sabonis.

9:02-- Sacramento's team is owned and run by foreigners, so of course they took a big kid from Greece I've never heard of. He played high school ball in Philly area, but is a project, according to Fraschilla.

9:16-- Denver took Juan Hernangomez, third time in last five years they took a foreign kid in the first round.

9:17-- They showed the Celtics' "war room" which is apparently is in what looks like a cramped locker room. Don't they have meeting space in their building?

9:25-- This is where I tell you Deandre Bembry from St Joe's is going to be a really good player. We're sitting at pick #17 as I type this; he should be off the board.

9:35-- TV guys won't say this because they don't want us to turn the channel, but this isn't a great draft. Teams are clutching at straws with foreign kids already, or looking for projects who will blossom down the road.

9:45-- You feel bad for kids who are actually in the arena, then slip in the draft and have to sit there-- has to be very humbling, as well as expenisve. Denver took Malik Beasley, who was sitting there for a while; Beasley's mom is an actress who was in The Hunger Games.

9:50-- This seems like a good time to point out that when he was in college, Cavaliers' owner Dan Gilbert was arrested for bookmaking-- he paid a fine and got three years of probation. Not lot of guys who own teams that have a gambling-related rap sheet.

9:57-- Atlanta Hawks took Bembry, who played for the St Joe's Hawks, so he will be a Hawk for the forseeable future. He is a little bit like Ben Simmons in that he needs to be a better shooter, stronger and a tad more selfish when it comes to scoring. He will be a 10-year NBA player, but he has to develop his scoring to be a really good 10-year player.

10:15-- Lebron James, Kawhi Leonard are skipping the Olympics, Rory McIlroy ain't going either, as NBC execs start to sweat just a little bit more.

10:25-- If you left college early to go pro and you haven't been picked yet, after 76ers just took Furkan Korkmaz, who won't be over here for at least two years, after they took some guard from France, then admit it, son-- you messed up bigtime.

10:30-- Would it be the worst thing on earth if kids who aren't drafted tonight could go back to college and play next year, and get better?

10:36-- That said, kids often listen to the wrong people- they hear what they want to hear and instead of going back to school and working on getting better, they jump at the lure of easy money, as Don Henley would say. .

10:42-- Only 14 of the first 27 players drafted were born in this country.

10:52-- $2.1M for two years ain't bad, but if you were expecting more, its a letdown for a kid who was told (lied to) that he would be a mid-first round pick. Kids taken in the first round are still guaranteed some money though. Better than nothing.

10:58-- NFL Draft is roughly ten weeks after the Super Bowl; NBA Draft is just four nights after the Finals ended. Kind of weird.

11:08-- I can't really imagine being really poor, then all of a sudden really rich; having grown up in a middle class home, both are foreign to me. Some of these kids are going to have to learn the word "no" or else their money won't last very long.

11:12-- Celtics took a 6-9 guy from Croatia named Ante Zizic; that pick got high praise on CBSSports.com. Most of the foreign kids picked were not praised as much.

11:17-- Pelicans traded two second round picks to move up to take Cheick Diallo, who was an unproductive sub for Kansas LY, after arriving with much hype. I liked the Suns taking Tyler Ulis with the next pick better-- take productive players.

11:21-- I'm not a big fan of bow ties, not that anyone consults me on fashion.

11:26-- Suns drafted Tyler Ulis, which could be a really good pick if he is healthy.

11:33-- Two UNLV kids got taken in the second round; I've would've lost a boatload of cash if you had bet me that Patrick McCaw would be selected ahead of Stephen Zimmerman. Realistically, both kids should've stayed in school. Zimmerman can really pass the ball but he needed to take another year to mature to really cash in.

McCaw got traded to from Milwaukee to Golden State; their D-League team is in Santa Cruz, so he can start looking for apartments there.

12:00-- Who would've thought that Oakland's point guard would get taken ahead of North Carolina's? 5-9 sparkplug Kay Felder is going to make the Jazz roster.

July 8 the NBA Summer League starts in Las Vegas; games are on TV and it is evident from watching those games, just how difficult it is to make an NBA roster. Players who didn't make the NBA last year will be there, fighting for one of those precious roster spots with this year's rookies. It is a very, very competitive ten days.

Hottest team: Astros (8-2 last 10)

Houston is catching fire at the right time, as the Astros pulled above the .500 mark after sweeping the Angels at home. The Astros have won five straight games, while winning three of their past four contests away from Minute Maid Park. Houston heads to Kansas City for an ALDS rematch with the Royals, as Dallas Keuchel takes the mound in the series opener. Last season’s Cy Young winner has stumbled to a 2-6 record on the highway to go along with a 5.91 ERA, while losing at Kauffman Stadium in a 5-1 defeat last July.

Coldest team: Mariners (2-9 last 11)

Seattle returns home following a dreadful road trip, capped off by a three-game sweep at the hands of Detroit. The Mariners limped to a 2-8 record on its trip through Tampa Bay, Boston, and Detroit, while its pitching staff is in ruins due to numerous injuries. Seattle has dropped 15 of its past 20 games overall, including a 1-3 mark in its previous four home contests as the M’s head back to Safeco Field for an interleague series with the streaking Cardinals.

Hottest pitcher:
Danny Salazar, Indians (8-3, 2.23 ERA)

Cleveland has owned Detroit this season by winning each of the first six matchups with its division rival. Salazar has yet to face the Tigers this season, but the Cleveland right-hander is riding a four-game winning streak. In his last four victories, the Tribe’s offense has scored 38 runs as three of those wins came at home. The road has been a different story for Salazar, as the Indians are 1-4 in his past five away outings, while not lasting past the fifth inning in three of those starts.

Coldest pitcher:
Matt Moore, Rays (3-4, 4.90 ERA)

Tampa Bay has fallen apart of late by dropping seven straight games, including getting swept by San Francisco and Cleveland. Moore has won just two of his past 10 starts for Tampa Bay, in spite of tossing at least six innings in each of his last three appearances. Tampa Bay owns an 0-5 mark in Moore’s last five starts away from Tropicana Field, while the southpaw makes his first start at Camden Yards since 2013 when the Rays travel to Baltimore on Friday.

Biggest UNDER run:
Braves (6-0 last six)

Atlanta continued its dominance of New York by rallying past the Mets on Thursday, 4-3. Not only did the Braves beat the Mets for the fourth time in eight days, but Atlanta also cashed its sixth consecutive ‘under.’ Atlanta’s pitching staff has been stellar recently by allowing three runs or less in seven straight games, while posting an impressive 7-1 record in the past eight contests overall. Aaron Blair has cashed the ‘under’ in three of his four June starts for Atlanta, which includes a 4-3 victory at Citi Field last Saturday.

Biggest OVER run: Yankees (5-0 last five)

The Twins have racked up the second-most ‘overs’ in baseball as they travel to New York to begin a three-game set with the Yankees. New York is riding a five-game ‘over’ streak after a pair of high-scoring contests with Colorado, which included a 9-8 walk-off victory on Wednesday. The Yankees and Twins played to three ‘overs’ in their four-game set at Target Field last weekend, while New York has allowed at least six runs in each of its past four contests overall.

Matchup to watch:
Red Sox vs. Rangers

Boston avoided a four-game sweep by Chicago with an extra-innings triumph on Thursday as the Red Sox venture to the Lone Star State to face the Rangers. Texas has won 10 of its past 12 games to remain atop the AL West standings, while coming off a home split against Cincinnati. David Price takes the mound in the series opener for Boston, as the southpaw snapped a three-start losing streak by tossing eight innings in a 2-1 victory against Seattle in his past outing. Price hasn’t received much run support recently, as the Red Sox scored two runs or less in each of his past four starts, while cashing the ‘under’ in each of those appearances. Texas won three of four home meetings from Boston last season, as Nick Martinez makes his second start of the season for the Rangers.

Betcha didn’t know
: The Nationals and Brewers begin a weekend series at Miller Park as Max Scherzer takes the ball for Washington. Scherzer struck out 16 and allowed one hit in a complete-game shutout of the Brewers the last time he faced them last June. The Nationals lost Scherzer’s last start at San Diego in spite of him striking out 10 batters in six innings, as Washington has won four straight starts by the former Cy Young winner after they dropped his last outing.

Biggest public favorite:
Yankees (-225) vs. Twins

Biggest public underdog:
Padres (+110) at Reds

Biggest line move:
Orioles (-125 to -135) vs. Blue Jays

LEADING OFF: Tigers find their swag, McCutchen struggling
June 24, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

A DIFFERENT SWAG

The Tigers can cut into the Indians' AL Central lead when the teams open a three-game set at Comerica Park. Cleveland is 6-0 against Detroit this year. The Tigers (38-35) got a walk-off wild pitch on Thursday to complete a four-game sweep of Seattle, and catcher James McCann says ''there's a different feel in the clubhouse, adding ''I don't really know the right word other than just the way that guys walk around, just a different swag about our team.'' Cleveland right-hander Danny Salazar (8-3, 2.23) faces Tigers righty Jordan Zimmermann (9-3, 3.24).

MACHINE DAYS

The Reds open their weekend honoring Pete Rose by reuniting members of the Big Red Machine that won World Series titles in 1975-76. Rose was a member of the team and will be inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame on Saturday and have his No. 14 officially retired on Sunday. It'll be a treat for visiting Padres manager Andy Green, who grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, and attended Reds games as a boy. ''It's hard not being a Pete Rose fan growing up in this area,'' Green said. ''So it's going to be special to watch that happen on Saturday.''

THUMBS NOT QUITE UP

The Pirates hope a day off Thursday can help spring Andrew McCutchen back into MVP form when Pittsburgh opens a four-game series with the Dodgers. McCutchen has been dealing with a swollen left thumb and is hitting just .238 with 10 homers this season. He was held out of Pittsburgh's 5-3 loss to San Francisco, and trainer Todd Tomczyk said McCutchen rested for a ''maintenance thing'' and not because of the thumb. ''It's just about getting him off the field and getting him a rest - as we do with all the guys - mentally and physically,'' manager Clint Hurdle said.

CARDS' HOT HAND

Carlos Martinez (7-5, 3.17) has recovered nicely from a tough stretch in May and leads the Cardinals into a three-game interleague set at Seattle. Martinez is 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA over his past four starts and pitched seven scoreless innings in a 4-3 loss to Texas in his last outing.

WE MEET AGAIN

Astros left-hander Dallas Keuchel (3-9, 5.32) tries to turn around his season when Houston opens a series against the Royals in a rematch of an AL Division Series matchup from last season. Keuchel won Game 3 of that series, but Kansas City advanced by winning Game 5. The AL Cy Young Award winner appeared as a reliever in that deciding game and allowed a late three-run homer to Kendrys Morales in a 7-2 loss.

PRICE SEEMS RIGHT

Red Sox lefty David Price (8-4, 4.24) looks to keep his ERA trending down in a game against Texas. Price signed a $217 million, seven-year deal with Boston in the offseason and has a 2.47 ERA over his past eight starts, helping him cut more than two runs off his ERA since a lackluster start to the year.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Joe Panik hit a bases-loaded triple, Mac Williamson launched a 446-foot home run and the San Francisco Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 Thursday for their 12th win in 14 games.

The Giants took three of four at PNC Park.

After hitting a key double late in Wednesday night's win, Panik put the Giants ahead 3-1 with his triple in the third inning. Williamson followed with an RBI single.

Williamson connected for his second home run of the season in the sixth.

Albert Suarez (3-1) gave up two earned runs in five innings. Santiago Casilla struck out three in the ninth for his 16th save.

Jonathon Niese (6-5) was tagged for five runs in six innings.

PHILLIES 7, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Struggling Freddy Galvis homered and drove in a career-high five runs to help Philadelphia end a nine-game losing streak.

Cesar Hernandez tied a career-high with four hits and slumping Ryan Howard homered as part of his first multiple-hit game since April 29.

The Phillies won for just the second time in 15 games.

Jerad Eickhoff (5-9) gave up one earned run and five hits in six innings. In winning three of his past four starts, Eickhoff has allowed five earned runs in 24 2/3 innings. The last three Philadelphia wins over a 17-game span were all Eickhoff victories.

Looking to become the Twins first pitcher with four wins, Ricky Nolasco (3-5) allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.

TIGERS 5, MARINERS 4, 10 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) - Pinch runner Cameron Maybin easily scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Steve Cishek with two outs in the 10th inning, giving Detroit a four-game sweep.

The Mariners, who missed a chance when Robinson Cano struck out with a runner on third to end the 10th, lost their sixth in a row.

Steven Moya drew a one-out walk from Cishek (2-4) and Maybin pinch ran. Pinch hitter Victor Martinez singled, with an error by left fielder Seth Smith on the play putting runners on second and third. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Andrew Romine struck out.

Cishek then threw a pitch that catcher Chris Iannetta couldn't corral, allowing Maybin to run home.

Kyle Ryan (3-2), who worked out of a bases-loaded jam Wednesday night, earned the win by escaping a jam of his own making in the 10th.

RED SOX 8, WHITE SOX 7, 10 INNINGS

BOSTON (AP) - Xander Bogaerts singled in the game-winning run in the 10th inning as Boston avoided a four-game sweep.

Chicago led 3-0, 4-1 and 7-5 before Boston sent it into extra innings with a run in the seventh and another in the eighth. The White Sox loaded the bases with nobody out in the 10th, but Craig Kimbrel (1-3) got J.B. Shuck on an infield popup and then struck out Tim Anderson and Adam Eaton.

In the bottom half, Matt Purke (0-1) walked two before Bogaerts lined one up the middle and Mookie Betts scored easily from second.

James Shields pitched his best outing since being acquired by the White Sox on June 4. Jose Abreu hit a three-run homer and Alex Avila had four hits for Chicago.

ATHLETICS 5, ANGELS 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Marcus Semien and Khris Davis homered to help Kendall Graveman get the first win by an Oakland starter in more than three weeks.

Graveman (3-6) gave up two runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings to get the first win for an A's starter since June 1 after the rotation had combined to go 0-9 in the previous 17 games.

Semien hit a three-run shot off Tim Lincecum (1-1) in Oakland's four-run second. Davis' solo shot in the fifth made it 5-2.

Sean Doolittle gave up a two-run homer to Jeff Bandy in the ninth but held on for his fourth save.

Home plate umpire Paul Emmel was hit in the head by Jefry Marte's bat with two outs in the ninth when the pinch-hitter lost control of it on a follow-through. Emmel fell to his knees before leaving the field with a towel held to his head.

MARLINS 4, CUBS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton homered in the fourth inning and singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth, sending Chicago to its fourth consecutive defeat.

Christian Yelich started Miami's rally in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out walk against Pedro Strop (1-2). He advanced on a wild pitch and scored standing up on Stanton's opposite-field single. J.T. Realmuto followed with an RBI double.

Kyle Barraclough (4-2) pitched a scoreless eighth.

BRAVES 4, METS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Adonis Garcia hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Addison Reed in the eighth inning and Atlanta beat New York for the fourth straight time in a week.

The Braves trailed 3-2 when Freddie Freeman opened the eighth with a single off Jerry Blevins. Reed (1-2) relieved with one out and, with catcher Travis d'Arnaud calling for a chest-high fastball on an 0-2 count, Garcia connected on a pitch that badly missed the target for his fourth home run.

Jim Johnson (1-4) won in relief.

Arodys Vizcaino converted his 18th save in 21 chances.

DIAMONDBACKS 7, ROCKIES 6

DENVER (AP) - Nick Ahmed had a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning and Arizona recovered after blowing a late lead.

Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler (2-2) ending his streak of 43 consecutive successful save attempts dating back to May 29, 2015, a club record and the seventh longest ever. He allowed an inherited runner to score while the Rockies overcame a 6-3 deficit to tie it in the eighth inning.

Arizona regained the lead in the ninth off reliever Carlos Estevez (1-4).

PADRES 7, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Derek Norris hit a three-run homer that completed San Diego's sixth-inning comeback, and the NL's highest-scoring team in June rallied to win a matchup of last-place teams.

J.C. Ramirez (1-3) gave up Norris' 10th homer run for a 6-4 lead.

Christian Friedrich (4-2) allowed four runs in five innings, including Adam Duvall's two-run homer. Fernando Rodney remained perfect in 16 save chances.

Cubs, Marlins begin series
June 23, 2016

CHICAGO CUBS (47-23) at MIAMI MARLINS (38-34)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Chicago -180, Miami +160, Total: 7.5

The Cubs travel to Miami to start a four-game series with the Marlins on Thursday.

Chicago comes into Thursday’s game on a three-game losing streak after getting swept at home by St. Louis. Even though the Cubs got swept in the team’s last series, they are still entering the four-game series with the best record in the league (47-23).

Chicago has been a great road team this season, going 22-12 when away from Wrigley. The Cubs will enjoy going against a lefty tonight because they are 16-6 when facing left-handers on the year.

Miami, on the other side of the field, comes into the series on a bit of a hot streak, winning six of its last nine games. The Marlins are also a good team when facing lefties, going 11-5 this season and that should bode well considering tonight’s game features a pair of left-handers on the mound. LHP Jon Lester (9-3, 2.06 ERA, 92 K) will be on the hill for the Cubs against Miami’s LHP Wei-Yin Chen (4-2, 5.22 ERA, 65 K).
Tonight’s starting pitcher for the Cubs, Jon Lester, has been pitching like an ace this year. He has recorded five straight wins in his last five starts. In his last three starts, he only gave up three total runs over the stretch. His success has continued on the road this season, going 5-1 with a 1.69 ERA. Lester did struggle in his last outing against Miami, when he let up six runs in five innings in June of last season.

The Cubs have the top record in the league with a combination of great hitting and pitching. They have the best ERA (2.73) as a club in the league and the third ranked team in runs scored (371).

1B Anthony Rizzo (.277, 17 HR, 54 RBI) has had a great week, hitting .533 with two homers and five RBI over the last seven days. 3B Javier Baez (.263, 6 HR, 19 RBI) has been hitting well over the last seven days, batting .353.

The Cubs would really like their big offseason signee OF Jason Heyward (.236, 4 HR, 25 RBI) to step up and produce after getting a 184 million dollar deal this year though. He has been a massive disappointment thus far.

Miami’s starter, Wei-Yin Chen, has had a tough year in South Beach. Over his last three games, he has an abysmal 9.88 ERA. In his last start, he only lasted 2.1 innings and gave up six runs on just seven hits. In fact, the whole month of June has not been kind to Chen as he owns a 7.78 ERA over the stretch. Despite Chen’s lack of good pitching, Miami’s staff is ranked ninth in ERA (3.94).

The other side of the ball has been a weak point for Miami, ranked 21st in the league in runs scored. OF Marcell Ozuna (.323, 15 HR, 43 RBI) leads the team in BA, homers, and RBI. He is also getting hot right now, hitting .421, three homers, and six RBI over the last seven days.

1B Justin Bour (.267, 12 HR, 36 RBI) is also finding his stroke, going .462 at the plate with two homers and four RBI in the last seven days. Miami’s big name OF Giancarlo Stanton (.211, 13 HR, 32 RBI) needs to find a way to get out of his current slump and start producing.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- NHL does its draft the best of any league; all the teams' executives are under one roof. Imagine if the NFL did that?

-- Houston 13, Kansas City 4-- Houston led 12-0.......in the second inning.

-- Boston 8, Texas 7-- Red Sox scored four runs in the top of the ninth.

-- Johnny Manziel's life story is going to be a very depressing movie someday.

-- Five players from St Louis were taken in first round of the NHL Draft. Wow.

-- Guy proposed to his girlfriend on the scoreboard at the Marlins' game last night; that takes some onions. What if she says no?

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

13) Correction: Got an e-mail yesterday sayng there are no agent commissions on rookie contracts in the NBA, so Jaylen Brown probably doesn't save any money by not having an agent, right now at least- there was one article on the Interweb that said some agents do claim commissions, despite there being very little negotiating involved with rookie contracts.

Brown is a bright kid; he says he'll hire an agent when the right time comes.

12) Scary scene in Anaheim Thursday, in 9th inning of A's-Angels game, with two out and A's up 5-4, Angels' batter swung and missed and let the bat go- the bat went behind the plate and drilled umpire Paul Emmel on top of his head, drawing blood. Quinn Wolcott went in and got his umpire's gear on, came out and worked the plate for the last out of the game, which actually took only one pitch.

11) In April the NCAA adopted a new rule that allows college coaches to evaluate the FIBA U17 World Championships in Spain; since this is a dead period for evaluating players in this country, lot of D-I coaches are in Spain for the tournament, which runs until July 3. .

10) Houston Astros were 1-1 on April 7; the next time they were at .500 or better was Tuesday night, 75 days later, when they got to 36-36.

9) Weird story of the day: In 1983, the St Louis Blues were having an ownership dispute; none of their representatives showed up for the NHL Draft, and the team actually forfeited all of its draft picks that year. No bueno.

8) Then there are the Green Bay Packers; they opened last year with 19 players who were drafted in the 4th round or later, including four of their five starting offensive linemen. Some organiations are run better than others.

7) Which brings us to the Miami Marlins, who on November 19, 2012, made a huge trade (12 players) with Toronto. As part of the trade, Miami chose Justin Nicolino, passing on Noah Syndergaard and Aaron Sanchez, who were both Toronto prospects back then. Oy.

6) Marlins raised around $100,000 for charity Thursday with the telethon they had on the air during their game with Cubs.

5) 59 underclassmen stayed in the NBA Draft; only 29 were drafted.

16 international players, 15 college seniors were also selected.

So 30 kids who could've played college ball this winter now have to find jobs, either in Europe or the D-League. Kids get a lot of bad advice.

4) Cubs' catcher David Ross played in the College World Series for two colleges, Florida and Auburn; don't see that very much.

3) More college basketball transfers (over 600 this year now)
-- Jordan Matthews, from Cal to Gonzaga
-- Kendrick Nunn, from Illinois to Oakland
-- Charles Matthews, from Kentucky to Michigan

2) June 23, 1917-- Babe Ruth was ejected after walking the first hitter of the game. His replacement came in, and didn't allow a baserunner the rest of the game, in what was probably the weirdest no-hitter in major league history.

1) Rough night at Dodger Stadium Wednesday for Nationals' CF Michael Taylot; he struck out five times, then let a single get by him in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing the tying/winning runs to score, in Washington's fifth straight loss.
