LEADING OFF: Arrieta shaky lately, Kluber and Hamels checked
May 2, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

BEAN-TOWN

Manny Machado will see whether Red Sox are going to throw at him again. Still simmering from Machado's slide that injured Dustin Pedroia less than two weeks, Boston took another shot at the Baltimore star when Chris Sale's fastball sailed behind his legs Monday night at Fenway Park.

''I've lost mad respect for that team and that organization,'' Machado said in an expletive-filled tirade after the game. ''If they're going to hit me, hit me. Go ahead. Get it over with. Don't keep lingering it around and doing that.''

Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes was suspended for throwing behind Machado's head two days after the slide. Sale was unapologetic, saying, ''Whatever, man. I'm not losing sleep tonight.''

The Orioles and Boston still have two more games left in this series.

BACK AT IT

Cubs ace Jake Arrieta seeks a bounce-back start against Philadelphia after allowing 12 earned runs in 16 innings over his last three starts. He has allowed five homers in that stretch, a troubling spike compared to the 10 he allowed in 229 innings while winning the NL Cy Young Award in 2015. Jerad Eickhoff (0-2, 3.56) is up for the Phillies at Wrigley Field.

FINGERS CROSSED

Indians and Rangers fans may learn more about the status of star pitchers Corey Kluber and Cole Hamels. Kluber was pulled from Cleveland's game against Detroit on Tuesday because of back discomfort. Kluber allowed five runs in three innings, his shortest outing in nearly a year. Hamels was scratched from his scheduled start for Texas against Houston because of tightness in his right oblique. He's set to meet with team physician Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas.

ROCKY ROAD

Nationals right-hander A.J. Cole is back up from the minors, though he can't pitch yet. Washington promoted him from Triple-A this week, but he first must serve the final three games of a five-game suspension he drew last September for throwing a pitch near the head of Pittsburgh's Jung Ho Kang. Cole missed a large portion of the 2016 season with shoulder trouble.

POPULAR AND PRODUCTIVE

Toronto righty Marcus Stroman often has his own rooting section when he pitches at Yankee Stadium - he grew nearby on Long Island. He is 5-2 with a 2.17 ERA in eight career starts against the Yankees going into this outing vs. CC Sabathia and New York.

Hottest team: Yankees (5-2 past seven games)

The Yankees have climbed into a tie for first place in the American League. Are they for real? Well, you be the judge. They have won five of the past seven outings, and new fan favorite Aaron Judge blasted two more homers in Tuesday's win to give the Bronx Bombers the best home record in the majors at 11-3. New York faces another favorable matchup at home against the disappointing Blue Jays, a team which has won just five times over the past 17 road outings. Toronto is also 3-8 in their past 11 against teams with a winning record, while going 3-10 in Marcus Stroman's past 13 road outings. The Blue Jays have won six of Stroman's past seven outings against the Yankees, but they're just 18-37 in their past 55 trips to the Bronx.

Coldest team Giants (4-9 past 13 games)

The Giants are stuck in the basement of the National League West Division at 10-18, and they have the second worst mark in the majors at -1,043 units. It doesn't look to get much better with struggling right-hander Jeff Samardzija on the bump (see below). San Francisco is 6-13 in their past 19 road games against a left-handed starter, 1-5 in their past six road games overall and 1-6 in their past seven games against a team with a winning record. They're also 4-11 in their past 15 trips to Chavez Ravine against the rival Dodgers.

Hottest pitcher: Gio Gonzalez, Nationals (3-0, 1.62 ERA)

Gonzalez is starting to look like the pitcher who won 21 games back in 2012, his first season with the Nationals. After fumbling around the .500 mark over the past four seasons Gonzalez has fired out of the chute this season. He has won all three of his decisions across five starts while ranking eighth in the majors in ERA at 1.62. He has a decent 2.36 K:BB (strikeouts to walks) ratio while cruising along with a 1.14 WHIP. In 2012 Gonzalez posted a 1.13 WHIP over 199 1/3 innings. He'll be tested by Arizona's offense on Wednesday. Gonzalez is 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA over 20 2/3 innings across his past four starts against the Diamondbacks, a team hitting .341 against him during the span.

Coldest pitcher: Jeff Samardzija, Giants (0-4, 6.32 ERA)

The former wide receiver at Notre Dame has struggled mightily in the Bay Area. He is 0-4 with a 6.32 ERA across five starts, coughing up 22 earned runs over 31 1/3 innings. While he showed some signs of life with a quality start last time out against the Padres, he still served up a homer in the outing to give him six long balls allowed in just 31 1/3 innings. He'll need to keep the ball in the park if he wants to get things back on the rails. He doesn't have a long record against the Dodgers, but when he has faced L.A. it hasn't been great. He is 0-1 with a 4.22 ERA over two starts with a .310 opponent batting average in 10 2/3 innings.

Biggest UNDER run: Royals (13-4 past 17 games)

The 'under' hasn't been as much of a certainty lately for the Royals, but that's mainly due to pitching breakdowns. The offense has really struggled for most of the season, as Kansas City is averaging just 2.53 runs per game over the past 19 outings dating back to April 1, including a goose egg in Tuesday's meeting against the White Sox. The 'under' is also 6-0-1 in Kansas City's past seven home games against a team with a winning overall mark and 8-2 in their past 10 games overall at Kauffman Stadium.

Biggest OVER run: Mets (7-0-1 past eight games, 10-1-2 past 13 outings)

The 'over' continues to come in for the Mets on a routine basis, with seven overs and a push over the past eight outings dating back to April 23. The over is also 4-0-1 in their past five tries on the road against right-handed pitching. and 12-2-2 in the past 16 games overall vs. RHP. The over is also an impressive 17-6-3 in their past 26 tries against National League East foes and 4-1 in Jacob deGrom's past five assignments. While the over has cashed in five straight meetings with the Braves, the under is 5-0 in deGrom's past five starts against Atlanta.

Matchup to watch: Angels vs. Mariners

The Halos broke out the big guns in the 11th inning Tuesday, as Albert Pujols doubled home Mike Trout to give the Angels a nice road win in 11 innings at Safeco Field. The Angels will look to build upon that with Opening Day starter Ricky Nolasco toeing the slab. The Angels are 7-1 over Nolasco's past eight starts while going 5-1 in their past six against teams with an overall losing record. The Mariners have had a difficult time lately, going just 1-4 in theirp ast five against divisional foes. They're also just 1-4 in Hisashi Iwakuma's past five home outings and 2-5 in his past seven tries against a team with an overall winning marl.

Betcha didn’t know: The Rangers have won just one of the past nine road starts by Nick Martinez, while the Astros have won six of their past seven at home and they're 14-4 in their past 18 games against a right-handed starter. Houston has also won 40 of their past 57 against teams with a losing record, although they have won just 30 of their past 102 tries against their Lone State State rivals. Charlie Morton is on the bump for the Astros looking to build on his success last time out. He struck out a career-high 12 batters against the A's in his most recent outing.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-200) vs. Phillies

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+150) at Royals

Biggest line move: Mets (-100 to -130) at Braves

Black returns to San Diego with NL West-leading Rockies
May 2, 2017

SAN DIEGO (AP) Bud Black is back in San Diego, and with a first-place ballsquad, no less.

Now the manager of the Colorado Rockies, Black returned to Petco Park on Tuesday for the first time since he was fired as manager of the Padres on June 15, 2015.

Black spent part of the day at his alma mater, San Diego State, before heading to Petco Park for the opener of a three-game series.

In his 8 + seasons managing the Padres, he never had a reason to go to the visitors' clubhouse or dugout.

''And over the years, I wasn't that curious,'' said Black, in his first season with Colorado.

''I've never been here. It's all right. It's OK,'' he told a large media throng in the visitors' dugout. ''Solid. The builders at Petco did a nice job on the visitors' side.''

Black, a former big league pitcher, was 649-713 with the Padres.

''This is new for me, first time, obviously, back here,'' he said. ''But driving down today there was a different sensation coming to this park. Once I got here, I felt comfortable, saw a number of people that I've crossed paths with, in the corridor, around the ballpark, grounds crews guys. That was cool.''

Black, who lives in the offseason in Rancho Santa Fe in northern San Diego County, knew not to get too nostalgic.

''I do know at 7, 7:05, there's going to be a ballgame,'' he said. ''It's going to be a little different on this side. As I've said before, I think those of us in uniform become hardened to some of these things.''

The Rockies came into the game leading the NL West, a half-game ahead of Arizona.

The Padres had only two winning seasons under Black. They finished 89-74 in his first season, 2007, after losing a wild-card tiebreaker game in 13 innings at Colorado. Many Padres fans still contend that Matt Holliday never touched home plate on the play that gave the Rockies a 9-8 win and helped them on the road to their first World Series appearance.

The Padres finished 90-72 in 2010. They had the NL's best record in late August before a 10-game losing streak staggered them and they missed the playoffs.

San Diego was 32-33 when it fired Black in 2015.

Armadillo:Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the SEC football title this coming fall:
2-3: Alabama
7-2: LSU
5-1: Auburn, Georgia
9-1: Florida
11-1: Tennessee
18-1: Texas A&M
40-1: Arkansas
45-1: Mississippi State, Missouri
50-1: Kentucky, South Carolina
100-1: Vanderbilt
Ole Miss is ineligible this season

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……..

13) Why bad teams are always bad: Isaiah Thomas was the 60th (and last) pick of the 2011 NBA Draft, a brilliant move by the Sacramento Kings, who aren’t known for brilliance.

Here are the four players picked right ahead of Thomas in the draft:
56. Chukwudiebere Maduabum
57. Tanguy Ngombo
58. Ater Majok
59. Ádám Hanga

Brilliant draft pick by the Kings, but………

12) Three years later, Sacramento traded Thomas, who had just scored 20.3 pts/game during the 2013-14 season, to Phoenix, for Alex Oriakhi and a trade exception. Mr Oraikhi has yet to play in the NBA. Thomas just scored 53 points in a playoff game. Oy.

11) Brilliant move by Phoenix, but seven months later, the Suns did a 3-way deal with the Celtics and Detroit. Here is what each team got:

Boston: Isaiah Thomas, Jonas Jerebko, Gigi Datome
Detroit: Tayshaun Prince (he was 34 at the time)

Phoenix: Marcus Thornton, a 1st round draft pick

Boston GM Danny Ainge should’ve gone to confession after this theft.

10) Atlanta Hawks have been in the NBA playoffs 10 years in a row, but they fired their GM this week, supposedly because he wanted to rebuild the roster, while the owner and coach want to keep on their current course and hope they do better in the playoffs.

9) The offensive and defensive coordinators at Alabama make $1.3M and $1.2M a year; thats $2.5M a year for two ASSISTANT coaches- the strength coach makes $560,000 a year.

8) Being a major league manager can’t be as much fun these days; teams carry so many pitchers, they only have 3-4 bench players per game and one of those is a backup catcher who rarely is used. When Jose Reyes was doubled off second early in the Mets’ game Wednesday nite, in a blatant show of nonchalance/apathy, when he should have been yanked from the game, he couldn’t be, because it would make New York’s bench shorthanded the rest of the nite.

Reyes WALKED BACK TO SECOND BASE after a fly ball to right; the throw came in, and the Braves’ SS tagged him out from behind. Reyes might as well as turned and given Terry Collins the finger, thats how terrible a play it was. But he stayed in the game.

Reyes later knocked in five runs in the Mets’ 16-5 win; good for him, but he makes $22M a year- the least he could freaking do is pay attention.

7) How is Bill Belichick not the highest paid coach in the NFL? Pete Carroll/Sean Payton are, at $8M a year.

6) Only 7 of the world’s top 30 golfers are in North Carolina for the Wells Fargo event this week; the tournament is being played at a different course than usual, one more like Augusta National.

5) More tension in Boston last nite; Orioles’ starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was tossed in the second inning for hitting Xander Bogaerts- there had been a conference call before the game with the teams and MLB brass, to lay the law down on ending the BS of the last week, but Gausman hit Bogaerts with a curveball, so no way was it intentional.

In the 5th inning, Adam Jones got tossed for arguing balls/strikes. It is fair to say the Orioles aren’t enjoying their stay in Boston this week.

4) College basketball transfers:
— Carlton Bragg goes from Kansas to Arizona State
— Peter Kiss goes from Quinnipiac to Rutgers
— Jazz Johnson goes from Portland to Nevada.

Of the 12 players on Nevada’s roster today, nine of them are transfers.

3) Denver Broncos signed RB Jamaal Charles to a one-year deal, which will make their two games against their division rival Chiefs a little more interesting.

2) Another rough day for star pitchers: Cole Hamels and Cory Kluber are now on the shelf, Hamels for 2-3 months.

1— Colorado Rockies’ TV guys were talking about the movie Top Gun last nite; lot of it was filmed in the San Diego area and the Rockies are playing the Padres in Petco this week. Hard to believe the movie came out in 1986.

Top Gun cost $15M to make; in 31 years since, the movie has made over $350M worldwide.

Thursday's Diamond Notes
May 4, 2017

Hottest team: Twins (4-0 past four, 6-1 past seven outings)

The Twins carry the longest win streak in the majors (four games) into play Thursday as they look for the sweep against Jharel Cotton and the Athletics. Minnesota has still won just three times over the past nine outings at Target Field. They'll turn to Kyle Gibson to keep it going, but he hasn't exactly been a stopper with a 0-3 record and 8.06 ERA. However, the Twins have won four straight overall against teams with a losing mark while going 4-1 in their past five tries against Americna League West Division foes.

Coldest team Royals (5-12 past 17)

The Royals won for the second time in three games on Wednesday against the White Sox, but they still have a long way to go before bettors can start trusting them again. Kansas City will look for just their third series win of the series in Thursday's get-away game against the Pale Hose. Despite Wednesday's victory the Royals are still just 3-13 in their past 16 outings against American League Central Division foes and 2-10 in their past 12 games overall. However, they have posted five wins over their past six home games against teams with a winning overall record and they're 7-2 in their past nine overall against winning teams. Plus, the ChiSox have won just seven of their past 26 visits to Kauffman Stadium.

Hottest pitcher: Ivan Nova, Pirates (3-2, 1.50 ERA)

Nova heads into Thursday's start in Cincinnati looking to stay hot. The key to Nova's success has been his stinginess with the free passes. Nova has allowed just one walk over 36 innings while limiting the opposition to a .198 batting average. He has a sparkling 0.75 WHIP, so it will be awfully hard for the Reds to make inroads against him even though they're at home. The Reds were able to hang a loss on him in Pittsburgh, however, in an April 12 start. He recorded a quality start in the outing while allowing three earned runs, eight hits and no walks over six innings.

Coldest pitcher: Kyle Gibson, Twins (0-3, 8.06 ERA)

The Twins head into Thursday's game with a four-game win streak, but if they're to make it five in a row Gibson will have to pitch much, much better. He has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his five outings while failing to last longer than 5 1/3 innings. On a positve note he had his finest outing of the season at Kansas City in his most recent outing on April 28, limiting the Royals to three earned runs, five hits and three walks in an 85-pitch outing over 5 1/3 innings. Wile the Twins are just 2-6 in Gibson's past eight at home, they have won 18 of their past 25 with Gibson facing a team with a losing record. And the A's are 1-8 in their past nine road games and 1-6 in their past seven against right-handed starting pitching.

Biggest UNDER run: Indians (6-1 past seven games, 6-0-1 past seven road outings)

The Indians offense has dried up in Motown, posting just six totals runs in the first three outings of the four-game set. The under has cashed in six of the past seven games overall while going 8-1-1 in the past 10 road contests. The under is also 12-3-1 in the past 16 games overall while going 3-0-1 in Danny Salazar's past four overall. The under is also 7-2-1 in Salazar's past 10 road outings against teams with a winning overall record while going 16-5-3 in Cleveland's past 24 overall away from home. If the under hits again it will be against the trends from the Tigers side. The over is 6-2 in Michael Fulmer's past eight overall, including 4-1 in his past five assignments at Comerica Park.

Biggest OVER run: Reds (10-1 past 11 games)

The 'over' just inched over the line in Wednesday's 7-2 win against the Pirates, as the total was 8 1/2 at most shops. That made for 10 over results in the past 11 for Cincinnati, including eight overs in the past 12 outings at Great American Ball Park. The under had been the play for the Bucs recently, going 14-6-1 in their past 21 on the road. However, the over is 5-2 in their past seven overall. The over is also 4-0 in Tim Adleman's past four assignments and 9-1 in their past 10 tries against right-handed starters. The over is 6-1-1 in the past eight meetings between these sides at GABP, and 7-2-1 in the past 10 meetings overall.

Matchup to watch: Angels vs. Mariners

The Angels and Mariners kick off a four-game set at Safeco Field. The Angels will try to solve southpaw Angel Miranda. The Angels are 4-0 in their past four vs. LHP while going 5-2 in their past seven against a team with a losing overall record. The M's have gotten a pick-me-up when Miranda is on the hill. They're 8-3 in Miranda's past 11 starts while going 5-1 over his past six at Safeco Field. They're also 5-1 in Miranda's past six tries against a team with a winning overall record. Seattle is also 4-1 in their past five against right-handed starting pitching.

Betcha didn’t know: Braves 2B Brandon Phillips is looking for a stolen base. His next theft will be the 200th of his career, and he will become the 48th player in Major League Baseball history to swipe 200 bases while also hitting 200 home runs. Ender Inciarte didn't steal a base or collect a hit in Wednesday's game, and he also didn't cross the plate. The Braves are 2-11 in the past 13 games when Inciarte doesn't record a run scored. The Braves are just 1-5 in their past six at SunTrust Park after a hot start at their new digs. Atlanta is also just 3-8 in their past 11 against National League East opponents while going 3-10 in their past 13 following a loss.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-260) vs. Diamondbacks

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+140) at Royals

Biggest line move: Nationals (-225 to -260) vs. Diamondbacks

LEADING OFF: O's, Red Sox finish heated series; Kinsler hurt
May 3, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

FEUD FINISHED?

The Orioles and Red Sox wrap up their heated four-game series at Fenway Park. After ace Chris Sale became the latest Boston pitcher to throw near Manny Machado, MLB executive Joe Torre talked to both teams Wednesday on a conference call and sent the message that ''enough is enough.'' Hours later, Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman was ejected in the second inning for plunking Xander Bogaerts with a breaking pitch. Once this four-game set is over, the O's and Red Sox take a break and don't meet again until June 1 at Camden Yards.

SCHER-THING?

The NL East-leading Washington Nationals send ace Max Scherzer to the mound for the finale of their three-game set against the surprising Diamondbacks. He was selected by Arizona in the first round of the 2006 draft and made his debut with the Diamondbacks in 2008. He is 4-0 with a 2.65 ERA in five career starts against his first major league team. Braden Shipley makes his first start of the season for the Diamondbacks, who are searching for a replacement for Shelby Miller after the right-hander was lost for the season with an elbow injury.

RAINY DAYS

The weather is wreaking havoc on the Brewers-Cards series in St. Louis. Wednesday's game was postponed and the Cardinals said Thursday's game, originally scheduled for 12:45 p.m., had been pushed back to 6:15 p.m. because of the forecast. Heavy rains have swollen many rivers to record levels in parts of Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Hundreds of people have been displaced and thousands more are potentially in harm's way.

TIGER DOWN

Detroit's pursuit of an AL Central title could take a hit if Ian Kinsler misses time after leaving a game Wednesday night with left hamstring tightness. The second baseman is batting just .206 this season but has a .330 on-base percentage and popped 28 home runs last year. Kinsler was lifted in the top of the seventh in a game against the Cleveland Indians after going 0 for 3.

APRIL'S BEST

Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova makes his first May start after being the NL's pitcher of the month for April. Nova completed the opening month by throwing a three-hitter for a 4-0 win in Miami on Saturday. He has thrown two complete games and walked only one batter in five starts.

BOSTON (AP) Manny Machado hit a long three-run shot for his third homer of the series and the Baltimore Orioles capped four tense days at Fenway Park with an 8-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.

Machado hit a 466-foot drive over the Green Monster during a five-run fourth inning. Seth Smith had four of Baltimore's 17 hits.

In a four-game set marred by beanballs, brushbacks and racial rancor, the finale was a sedate affair decided in the fourth when the Orioles turned a two-run deficit into a 6-3 lead. Tyler Wilson (2-1) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings while making a spot start because scheduled pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez was forced to come out of the bullpen Wednesday.

Boston right-hander Kyle Kendrick (0-1) made his season debut and allowed six runs and eight hits in four innings. Dustin Pedroia homered for the Red Sox- the first of the year for the 2008 AL MVP.

NATIONALS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out a season-high 11 to bounce back from his worst outing this season, helping Washington to the victory.

Scherzer (4-2) allowed one run and two hits in seven innings. He also was 2 for 3 at the plate, driving in Washington's first run with a second-inning infield single that pitcher Braden Shipley could not pick up with his bare hand.

The NL Cy Young Award winner struck out the side in the fourth and the seventh, the only two innings he allowed a hit. He gave up Jake Lamb's homer in the seventh.

Matt Albers pitched the eighth, Joe Blanton gave up Paul Goldschmidt's leadoff homer in the ninth and Enny Romero finished the four-hitter for his second major league save.

Shipley (0-1) gave up three runs, five hits and six walks in four-plus innings.

RAYS 5, MARLINS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Tim Beckham homered twice for the second time in eight days, driving in four runs to lead Tampa Bay to the win.

Matt Andriese (2-1) struck out eight over seven innings to match his longest outing this season. Dee Gordon hit a run-scoring single off Chih-Wei Hu in the ninth before Alex Colome got the final out for his eighth save.

The Rays won three of four games to take the Citrus Series between the intrastate rivals, winning twice before small crowds in Miami before returning home to mostly-empty Tropicana Field on Wednesday and Thursday.

Miami right-hander Dan Straily (1-2) allowed four runs and three hits in five innings.

BREWERS 5, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jesus Aguilar's first major league home run broke a seventh-inning tie, sending the Brewers to the victory against banged-up Cardinals.

Cardinals right fielder Stephen Piscotty departed after the second inning with a strained right hamstring and center fielder Dexter Fowler came out following the third with a strained right shoulder.

Milwaukee got its first series win at St. Louis since April 28-30, 2014, ending a streak of 15 series losses and two splits.

With the score 4-4, Aguilar hit for Oliver Drake (2-0) and homered against Matt Bowman (1-1) in his 100th career big league at-bat over four seasons.

Neftali Feliz pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

WHITE SOX 8, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Derek Holland struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings, helping the White Sox earn a split of their four-game series against the Royals.

Holland (3-2) was charged with two runs, one earned, and three hits. The left-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in his first six outings this season.

Jose Abreu and Matt Davidson homered for Chicago, which finished with 11 hits.

Kansas City right-hander Ian Kennedy (0-3) surrendered five runs before leaving with a strained right hamstring with one out in the fifth. The Royals said Kennedy will be evaluated Friday to determine the severity of the injury.

RANGERS 10, ASTROS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Joey Gallo homered and drove in three runs, Rougned Odor and Elvis Andrus also connected, and Texas stopped a four-game slide.

After twice giving up leads earlier in the series, the Rangers went ahead 4-0 in the first inning and used the bullpen to help avoid a four-game sweep.

A.J. Griffin (3-0) picked up the win, yielding one earned run in five innings in his return from the disabled list after being sidelined by gout in his left ankle.

Marwin Gonzalez homered in his fifth straight start for Houston. Joe Musgrove (1-3) allowed five runs, four earned, and five hits in four innings.

CUBS 5, PHILLIES 4, 13 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - Albert Almora Jr. doubled leading off the 13th inning and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Freddy Galvis, giving the Cubs the win.

Kris Bryant had four hits, Miguel Montero homered and drove in two runs, and Matt Szczur and Addison Russell hit run-scoring doubles as the Cubs extended their winning streak to three.

Koji Uehara (1-2), Chicago's eighth pitcher, got three straight outs for the victory.

Cameron Rupp and Maikel Franco homered for Philadelphia, which has lost six of seven, and Cesar Hernandez had four hits. Joely Rodriguez (1-1) got the loss.

REDS 4, PIRATES 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Joey Votto doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice, leading Cincinnati to its fourth win in five games.

Adam Duvall drove in Votto both times as the Reds improved to 6-1 against the Pirates this year. Tim Adleman (1-1) pitched six innings of two-run ball, and Raisel Iglesias got three outs for his fifth save.

Gift Ngoepe and Francisco Cervelli each had RBI doubles for Pittsburgh, which has dropped four of five. Ivan Nova (3-3) gave up four runs and 10 hits in six innings.

ATHLETICS 8, TWINS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jharel Cotton struck out nine in six innings and Ryon Healy hit his fourth home run, leading Oakland to the win.

Cotton (3-3) gave up three runs and three hits, and Stephen Vogt had two hits and two RBIs to help the A's avoid a three-game sweep. Santiago Casilla struck out Miguel Sano with the bases loaded in the ninth for his fifth save in six tries, Sano's fourth strikeout of the afternoon.

Kyle Gibson (0-4) gave up four runs, eight hits and three walks in four innings. The Twins removed center fielder Byron Buxton in the sixth inning after he collided with the wall while making a catch.

The A's, who had scored two runs or fewer in six of their previous nine games, tied a season high with 14 hits.

ROCKIES 3, PADRES 2, 11 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ryan Hanigan's RBI infield single in the 11th inning lifted Colorado to the victory.

Hanigan, who also homered in his Rockies debut, hit a grounder up the middle that Erick Aybar fielded, but he was unable to flip the ball to Cory Spangenberg at second for a force. That allowed Ian Desmond to score.

Chad Qualls (1-0) pitched the 10th for the win. Greg Holland got three outs for his 12th save.

Brad Hand (0-1) took the loss.

MLB notebook: Red Sox RHP Wright done for season
May 4, 2017

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright will undergo a cartilage restoration procedure on his left knee Monday and will miss the rest of the 2017 season, the team announced Thursday.

Wright is expected to be ready by the start of the 2018 season.

Wright, 32, was 1-3 with an 8.25 ERA through his first five starts this season before being placed on the disabled list with a sprained left knee.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said the right-hander injured the knee during spring training, but it wasn't bad enough for him to start the season on the DL.

--The Red Sox permanently banned a man from Fenway Park who they said used a racial slur toward another fan at Tuesday's game.

The incident is separate from the insults directed at Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones in Monday's game, although the team said it is taking the matter just as seriously.

The Red Sox did not divulge the identity of the fan.

"It's unprecedented, I think, in baseball," Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said of having a fan banned for life from a ballpark.

--Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper left Thursday's game against Arizona with a groin injury.

Manager Dusty Baker said Harper was removed for precautionary reasons and his status is day-to-day.

--Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton left Thursday's game against the Oakland Athletics after hitting the wall while making a catch in the fifth inning.

The Twins announced that Buxton was taken out for precautionary reasons. He passed initial concussion protocol and will be re-evaluated Friday.

--The Oakland Athletics placed Josh Phegley on the seven-day concussion disabled list and recalled fellow catcher Bruce Maxwell from Triple-A Nashville.

Phegley was removed from Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins after taking a foul ball off his mask. The 29-year-old has started nine games with Oakland.

LEADING OFF: Judge takes aim at Wrigley, Keuchel starts fast
May 4, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

HERE COMES THE JUDGE

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge takes his first swings at Wrigley Field when New York visits the Cubs. The 6-foot-7 rookie leads the majors with 13 home runs, many of them mammoth shots. No doubt, the ballhawks who wait outside on Waveland Avenue beyond the left field wall hoping for souvenirs during batting practice will be busy. The Yankees also might get a boost from having catcher Gary Sanchez come off the disabled list to start the three-game series vs. Chicago.

BOUNCING BACK

Astros lefty Dallas Keuchel tries to improve to 6-0 when he pitches on the road against the Angels. He was the AL pitcher of the month for April after posting a 1.21 ERA in six starts. Keuchel won the 2015 AL Cy Young Award when he went 20-8 for Houston, then he was 9-12 last year.

KNOCK, KNOCK

Twins center fielder Byron Buxton will get checked after twice running into the wall chasing flyballs. In the second inning Thursday against Oakland, he slammed into the fence so hard that the door to the bullpen opened. In the fifth, he hit the wall again, knocking his hat off. Buxton left the game and passed the initial concussion tests.

CHANGE HIS LUCK

Rangers ace Yu Darvish starts the opener of a three-game series at Seattle. He'll be pitching on an extra day of rest after Texas moved him back because he threw 115 and 126 pitches in his last two starts. Darvish is 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in three career starts at Safeco Field.

SCRATCH AND SNIFF

Third baseman Todd Frazier was a late scratch for the White Sox because of back stiffness. But the timing of the move - right before first pitch Thursday in Kansas City - sent some people on social media sniffing about trades. Frazier has been linked to the Red Sox, who could use help at the position.

RUN FOR THE ROSES?

Shortly after racking up his 200th career stolen base, Reds speedster Billy Hamilton said he'd be willing to race recently drafted Bengals blazer John Ross in a 40-yard dash for charity. The all-Cincinnati matchup would pit Hamilton, who leads all big leaguers in steals since his debut in 2013, against Ross, who set an NFL scouting combine record of 4.22 seconds in the 40. ''I know he's really, really fast,'' Hamilton said. ''I think a 40 would be a fun race for the city.''

Friday’s six-pack

Odds to win the Pac-12 football title this coming fall:
even: USC

5-2: Washington

6-1: Stanford

7-1: Oregon, UCLA

12-1: Colorado

13-1: Utah, Washington State

20-1: Arizona State

35-1: Arizona

50-1: Oregon State

60-1: California

******************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……….

13) May 24 is the deadline for kids to withdraw from the NBA Draft; Purdue is holding its breath that Caleb Swanigan will come back to West Lafayette next season- that would make the Boilers a top-10 preseason team.

Apparently, Swanigan hasn’t yet been assured that he’ll be a first round pick.

12) Tony Parker has a ruptured left quadriceps tendon and will miss the remainder of the playoffs, which makes life much harder for the Spurs in their series with Houston.

11) Washington Wizards have outscored Boston 119-70 in first quarter of their games in this playoff series, but Celtics still won two of the three games- home side won all three.

10) Mark William Calaway, better known as the Undertaker on WWE broadcasts, had hip replacement surgery right after Wrestlemania- he is 52 years old.

9) There is a horse with only one eye running in the Kentucky Derby Saturday- Patch.

8) In 2009, the San Diego Padres picked Donovan Tate with the #1 overall pick; he never got above Class A ball, hit .226 in his career and now, at age 26, will walk on as a QB at the U of Arizona- he was at one time also a top football recruit.

He can walk on because the Padres are paying for his education.

7) Big 14 Conference is having its conference tournament in Madison Square Garden next winter, a week earlier than normal; because of that, they’ll play some conference games in December, which they’ve never done before.

6) Mt St Mary’s won the NEC basketball tourney twice in last four years; they won’t win it next year- five of their returning players have already transferred, as higher-level programs increase their poaching of low major and mid-major teams.

5) Atlanta Hawks have 11 draft picks over the next three years, so they figure to improve; they’re not firing their GM after all, just giving him a different title, probably a small demotion/reduction of duties.

4) Leonard Hamilton (Florida St) and Richard Pitino (Minnesota) got contract extensions this week, after their successful seasons.

3) Wizards 116, Celtics 89— Home side is now 3-0 in this series; there was an incident in the first half between Kelly Oubre and Kelly Olynyk— no one was KO’d in the scuffle.

Lot of Boston/Washington-area hostility in the sports world this week.

2) An NBA agent was fired for running up a $42,000 Uber tab on a player’s credit card, charges which were not authorized by the player, who isn’t a client of that agent.

1— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t), they would look like this:

AL: Bronx/Cleveland or CWS/Houston. Wild Cards: Orioles; then either BoSox or Central #2
NL: Washington/Cubs/Colorado. Wild Cards: Arizona/Dodgers
