LEADING OFF: Cubs, Red Sox show off trophies at Fenway Park
April 29, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

CROWNS IN TOWN

The curse-breaking World Series trophies that the Red Sox won in 2004 and the Cubs earned last year will both be on display at Fenway Park when Boston hosts Chicago in the nationally televised night matchup. Fans can pose for pictures with both pieces of hardware, with a suggested donation of $20 that will go to each team's charities. Kyle Hendricks starts for Cubs against Eduardo Rodriguez.

BOOMIN'

Boosted by Aaron Judge, the Yankees have hit nine home runs in taking two straight from Baltimore. The 6-foot-7 Judge has connected three times vs. the visiting O's, helping New York post the best record in the majors and get in position for a sweep.

''It's fun when everybody's hittin' the ball out of the yard,'' said Austin Romine, who homered and drove in five runs Saturday in a 12-4 romp.

FAN ZONE

Nationals star Bryce Harper and Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber have both struck out six times in the last two days.

Harper followed his first three-strikeout game of the season Friday by going 0 for 4 and fanning three more times Saturday vs. the Mets. Coming into the series, he had struck out just 14 times in 22 games. Schwarber is hitting just .211 after two tough games in Boston.

RAINY DAYS

The Royals have lost eight in a row, dropping them to 7-15. The skid was put on pause Saturday night when they were rained out at home against Minnesota. Jason Hammel (0-2) will try to end the streak when he faces Twins righty Phil Hughes (3-1).

ROTATING

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo says he'll know which direction the Diamondbacks will go with their rotation after losing Shelby Miller for the season. Miller said Saturday that he'll have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The 26-year-old Miller was 2-2 with a 4.09 ERA after going 3-12 last year in his first season with Arizona.

Zack Godley currently has Miller's spot, but Lovullo says the team is still deciding. ''It's time for somebody to step up, embrace that new challenge, and run with it. The candidates that we're talking about, we feel very comfortable with,'' he said.

WASHINGTON (AP) Anthony Rendon had 10 RBIs, three home runs and six hits as the Washington Nationals took advantage of Noah Syndergaard's injury and mauled the New York Mets 23-5 on Sunday to set a franchise scoring record.

Rendon went a career-best 6 for 6 and scored five times while breaking the club mark for RBIs. He became the 13th player in major league history to drive in 10 or more runs in a game - the first since Garret Anderson did it for the Angels in 2007.

Matt Wieters added two homers, a single and two walks as the Nationals salvaged the finale of a three-game series between NL East rivals. Adam Lind and Bryce Harper also homered, and Harper scored four times to set a major league record for runs in April with 32.

Washington finished with a season-high 23 hits and scored the most runs in the history of the Expos/Nationals franchise. The Nationals' seven homers were their most since the team moved from Montreal to Washington in 2005.

Rendon, who began the day with no homers and five RBIs this season, raised his batting average from .226 to .278. He capped his incredible performance with a solo home run off Mets backup catcher Kevin Plawecki in the eighth. Harper and Lind went deep against Plawecki earlier in the inning.

It was a miserable day all-around for the Mets, who won the first two games of the series after losing six straight. They gave up 17 consecutive runs after trailing 6-5 in the fourth.

Syndergaard (1-2), the team's hard-throwing ace, left in the second inning with what the club called ''a possible right lat strain'' and was on his way back to New York for an MRI on Monday morning.

Matt Albers (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

PADRES 5, GIANTS 2, 12 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Wil Myers hit a three-run homer in the top of the 12th inning to send San Diego past San Francisco.

Myers' seventh home run and second in two games came off reliever George Kontos (0-2). Cory Spangenberg singled against Kontos leading off the inning, and Erick Aybar singled two batters later.

Hector Sanchez, who played parts of five seasons with the Giants, had a pinch-hit, two-run homer off San Francisco closer Mark Melancon in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Sanchez's first home run of the season handed Melancon his second blown save in seven chances.

Sanchez represented the tying run after shortstop Eduardo Nunez booted Luis Sardinas' leadoff grounder for an error.

Ryan Buchter (2-1) pitched two shutout innings and Jose Torres earned his first save.

INDIANS 12, MARINERS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Michael Brantley homered and Francisco Lindor had a two-run double as Cleveland scored eight times in the third inning against weary Seattle.

Brantley led off the big inning with a single and capped it with a two-run homer. Lindor, who had three RBIs, hit a solo homer in the third and preceded Brantley's homer with his double.

Josh Tomlin (2-3) allowed four runs in five-plus innings for the win. The Mariners began the sixth with six straight hits and scored three times, but Nick Goody worked out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam.

Chase De Jong (0-2), making his first major league start, gave up six runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings. Nelson Cruz homered for the Mariners, who finished 4-6 on their 11-day road trip.

Roberto Perez had three hits and drove in three runs for the defending AL champions, who have won nine of 12.

MARLINS 10, PIRATES 3

MIAMI (AP) - Justin Bour drove in six runs with four hits, both career highs, and Miami rallied from a three-run deficit to end a four-game losing streak by beating Pittsburgh.

Bour improved his batting average from .184 to .222. He had an RBI double in the second, an RBI single in the fourth, a two-run single off Trevor Williams (1-1) in the fifth and a two-run homer in Miami's six-run seventh.

Bour helped the Marlins avert a series sweep and shake an offensive slump after being outscored 26-8 during the previous four games. They totaled a season-high 15 hits, including three each by Dee Gordon and Marcell Ozuna.

Josh Bell hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, but they were shut out over the final 8 2/3 innings.

Pittsburgh starter Chad Kuhl left in the fifth after he was hit in the right leg by Gordon's sharp comebacker.

Dustin McGowan (1-0) and four other Marlins relievers combined for five scoreless innings.

ANGELS 5, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - JC Ramirez got his first win as a starter on his fourth try after 111 career relief appearances, and Jefry Marte homered and hit a tiebreaking, two-run single to help Los Angeles beat Texas.

Ramirez (3-2) matched his career high from two starts earlier with nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander has been filling in for injured Garrett Richards, who hasn't pitched since leaving his first start with a right biceps strain.

Marte's two-out single in the fifth came after the Rangers gave Mike Trout an intentional walk to load the bases and starter Martin Perez (1-4) retired Albert Pujols on a popup.

Marte had a solo homer in the ninth. Kole Calhoun also connected for the Angels.

Bud Norris struck out four of the five batters he faced for his fifth save, including Rougned Odor with two on to end the eighth.

Shin-Soo Choo homered for Texas.

ORIOLES 7, YANKEES 4, 11 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Mark Trumbo hit a go-ahead single in a three-run 11th off Bryan Mitchell, who returned to the mound after an unusual inning at first base, and Baltimore rebounded from another blown late lead.

Didi Gregorius hit a two-out, two-run single in the New York ninth that made it 4-all. Logan Verrett (1-0), making his Orioles debut, escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the 10th.

Joey Ricard singled with one out in the 11th against Mitchell (1-1), stole second and later scored on Trumbo's two-out single. New York had won four in a row.

With the Yankees short in the bullpen, manager Joe Girardi moved Mitchell from the mound to first base in order to keep him in the game. Mitchell let one pop fall for an error and also caught one.

BLUE JAYS 3, RAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Russell Martin hit a go-ahead single during a three-run rally in the eighth inning and Toronto posted back-to-back wins for the first time this year.

The Blue Jays started the day at 7-17, the worst record in the majors. A loss would've left them with the poorest winning percentage in March/April in team history.

Toronto then lost starter Aaron Sanchez, the AL ERA leader last year, after just one inning because of a split fingernail. Six Toronto relievers combined to limit the Rays to one run in eight innings. J.P. Howell (1-1) got one out and Roberto Osuna finished for his third save.

The Blue Jays chased Chris Archer in the eighth and won it against Alex Colome (0-2).

REDS 5, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Joey Votto hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and Adam Duvall doubled three times and singled for Cincinnati.

The Reds had lost eight of their previous nine games.

Wandy Peralta (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh. Closer Raisel Iglesias threw two innings to record his fourth save in as many chances.

Trevor Rosenthal (0-1) gave up one run on two hits.

BREWERS 4, BRAVES 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Domingo Santana homered twice and drove in four runs as Milwaukee ended Atlanta's four-game winning streak.

Santana hit a solo shot in the fifth, then added a three-run drive in the sixth inning. He has five homers this season, including three in the three-game series against Atlanta.

Freddie Freeman hit his ninth home run for the Braves.

Matt Garza (1-0) pitched 6 2/3 solid innings in his second start of the year. Neftali Feliz worked the ninth for his sixth save in seven chances.

Mike Foltynewicz (0-3) gave up both of Santana's homers.

Brewers slugger Ryan Braun left after six innings with tightness in his right trapezius, a large muscle that extends from the shoulder into the upper back.

TIGERS 7, WHITE SOX 3

DETROIT (AP) - Jose Iglesias doubled and drove in three runs, helping Detroit stop a four-game losing streak.

Jordan Zimmermann (3-1) picked up a sloppy victory, allowing three runs in five-plus innings.

Todd Frazier homered for the White Sox, who had won six in a row. Miguel Gonzalez (3-1) allowed seven runs and a career-high 14 hits in six innings.

Justin Upton went deep for the Tigers, and Alex Avila had three hits.

ASTROS 7, ATHLETICS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Dallas Keuchel threw 7 2/3 solid innings and Marwin Gonzalez hit a three-run homer, leading Houston to the victory.

Keuchel (5-0) struck out nine while allowing one run and three hits. The left-hander became the second pitcher in Astros history to get five wins in April, joining Roger Clemens in 2004.

Ken Giles earned his sixth save after getting Yonder Alonso to fly out with the bases loaded.

Oakland's Jesse Hahn (1-2) gave up four runs in six innings.

TWINS 7, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Miguel Sano homered and drove in five runs, helping the Twins hand the Royals their ninth straight loss.

Sano posted his fourth consecutive multihit game. He has 11 hits in his last 16 at-bats.

Sano connected in the third after Jason Hammel (0-3) walked Byron Buxton and Max Kepler. He added run-producing singles in the fourth and sixth innings.

It's the longest slide for Kansas City since a 12-game skid in April 2012.

Minnesota right-hander Phil Hughes (4-1) got the win despite allowing 10 hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings. Brandon Kintzler yielded Whit Merrifield's two-out homer in the ninth before finishing for his seventh save.

DODGERS 5, PHILLIES 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Andrew Toles hit a three-run homer and Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched 5 1/3 solid innings, helping Los Angeles complete the three-game sweep.

Ryu (1-4) earned his first victory of the season in his second consecutive strong start. The veteran left-hander struck out nine and allowed one run.

Odubel Herrera hit a two-run homer for Philadelphia in the ninth. Kenley Jansen then came in and struck out Cesar Hernandez for his seventh save.

Philadelphia right-hander Nick Pivetta (0-1) allowed two runs and nine hits in five innings in his major league debut.

DIAMONDBACKS 2, ROCKIES 0, 13 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) - Daniel Descalso hit a two-run homer into the Chase Field swimming pool in the 13th inning, lifting Arizona to the victory.

Descalso's drive off Jordan Lyles (0-1) salvaged the finale of the weekend series for the Diamondbacks and ended the longest scoreless game in Chase Field history.

Seven pitchers, led by Patrick Corbin's 6 1/3 innings, combined to shut out the Rockies on five hits. Randall Delgado (1-0) pitched the final two innings to get the victory, finishing a 6-4 homestand for Arizona.

MLB notebook: Syndergaard sustains 'possible lat strain'
April 30, 2017

New York Mets ace Noah Syndergaard left his start in the second inning Sunday against the Washington Nationals with an apparent injury to his right side.

The Mets' official status update is a "possible lat strain." Syndergaard is heading back to New York City from Washington for an MRI, according to the team.

Syndergaard immediately held up his right arm after throwing a 2-2 pitch to Nationals slugger Bryce Harper. The right-hander gave up five hits and five earned runs in 1 1/3 innings, with two walks, a wild pitch and two strikeouts.

Syndergaard had been scratched from his start Thursday in Atlanta with a "tried arm," according to Mets manager Terry Collins. However, Syndergaard threw a bullpen session Friday and was fine medically for his Sunday start, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said.

--Washington center fielder Adam Eaton, acquired for three young pitchers in a trade with the Chicago White Sox in December, has an ACL tear in his left leg and will likely miss the rest of the season, general manager Mike Rizzo said.

Eaton had been used as the leadoff hitter while playing center field. He was injured in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night as he beat out an infield single, as his left leg hit the first base bag at a weird angle. He was carried off the field and had an MRI exam on Saturday.

The left-handed hitter batted .297 (27-for-91) in the first 23 games. He has seven doubles, a .462 slugging percentage, a .393 on-base average, two homers and 13 RBIs.

--Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez left his start against the Tampa Bay Rays after one inning Sunday after splitting a nail on his right middle finger.

The setback occurred in his first outing since returning from the disabled list. Sanchez had not pitched since April 15 because of a blister on his the same finger. Part of the nail was removed in a procedure performed April 18.

Sanchez made 13 pitches (seven strikes) with one walk and one strikeout in his inning on Sunday. Ryan Tepera replaced Sanchez in the second inning.

--Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis was scratched from the series finale against the New York Yankees due to a sore right elbow.

Davis was in the original lineup, but the injury was announced about an hour before the scheduled first pitch. He was replaced by rookie Trey Mancini, who made his second start at first base.

Davis is batting .238 with three home runs and five RBIs in 23 games this season. He started Saturday and was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

--The Oakland Athletics placed left-hander starter Sean Manaea on the 10-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain, the team announced.

The move is retroactive to April 27.

Manaea, 25, was removed from his most recent start on Wednesday after two innings against the Los Angeles Angels. He allowed three runs before his night ended after only 34 pitches and took the loss to drop his record to 1-2 with a 5.18 ERA.

LEADING OFF: Machado, O's in Beantown after near-beaning
April 30, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

BIRDS IN BEANTOWN

The Orioles face Boston at Fenway Park in their first meeting since tempers flared a week ago at Camden Yards. Manny Machado rankled the Red Sox with a late slide into second baseman Dustin Pedroia, then two days Matt Barnes buzzed the Baltimore star with a fastball behind the head. The dustup drew a lot of heat, and Barnes was suspended four games.

LONE STAR LOSSES

Houston missed the playoffs last season, and the Rangers really hurt them. The Astros were just 4-15 against their intrastate rivals, and are only 10-28 since Jeff Banister became the Texas manager in 2015. They meet for the first time this year, with Houston-area native Andrew Cashner starting for the Rangers and Lance McCullers pitching for the Astros at Minute Maid Park.

NOT A PERFECT 10

The Royals try to avoid a 10th straight loss when they host the White Sox. Kansas City is stuck in its worst skid since dropping 12 in a row in April 2012. Jason Vargas starts for the Royals after losing to Chicago last week.

TEST TIME

Mets ace Noah Syndergaard is having an MRI, a day after he left a shaky start with a possible lat strain. He refused to have an MRI on his biceps Friday, but will now get checked after giving up five runs in the first inning of a 23-5 loss at Washington. Syndergaard was pulled with one out in the second after his 38th pitch. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said this problem ''may or may not be related to his previous complaint, which was in the bicep, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.''

DOING OK?

The Brewers might have a better feel for how slugger Ryan Braun is feeling. He left Sunday's game because of arm soreness and tightness in his right trapezius, a large muscle that extends from the shoulder into the upper back. Braun, hitting .287 with seven home runs, said he doesn't expect to go on the disabled list. The former NL MVP has missed time with lower back tightness this season and last year.

FIRE UP THE COALS

Pirates righty RHP Gerrit Cole (1-3, 3.60 ERA) is scheduled to make his 100th career start when Cincinnati visits PNC Park. He is 0-6 in eight starts against the Reds.

No easy Rx for choices of Giants, Mets
April 30, 2017

We embark on the second month of this baseball season with a pair of major disappointments taking shape in the National League.

The San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets -- two teams pegged as pennant contenders from the get-go -- have the two worst records in the NL. And the chance is now there that they may never play up to their 2017 potential.

We are only crossing into May, so it is too soon to say "never," but neither case looks good, and the reasons are confounding. The Mets (10-14) are 6 1/2 games behind the NL East-leading Washington Nationals. San Francisco (9-17) is seven games back of the NL West-leading Colorado Rockies.

Has there been poor play? Yes, on both counts. Has there been underperformance so far? Yes, again.

However, it could turn out that the Giants and Mets were set on these paths by something worse: horrendous judgment.

In the case of the Giants, it was the poor choice of ace Madison Bumgarner to go dirt biking during an off day in Denver before a series with the Rockies. He hit a slick spot, crashed and sustained a Grade 2 strain in his throwing shoulder as well as bruised ribs. The left-hander is sidelined for the next three months.

The problem with the Mets was far worse because it wasn't just one person's decision, and it was the second time in a week that decision-making created an injury crisis. On Thursday, star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes sustained a bleak-looking hamstring injury, bad enough that he needed assistance leaving the field.

On Sunday in Washington, ace Noah Syndergaard left the game after throwing a pitch and grabbing the back of his shoulder. It appears he will be lost for some period of time.

In each case, the organization substituted the players' judgment about their fitness to play in place of the judgment of medical personnel or the front office or field staff. It was bad enough that it happened once, but now it has happened twice.

So the 23-5 drubbing by the Nationals ends up the second-most embarrassing thing that happened to the Mets organization on Sunday.

Cespedes first hurt the hamstring when he was forced from the April 20 game. He said he needed just a few days off, so the club didn't put him on the disabled list. He couldn't play in the next three games, couldn't even pinch-hit when manager Terry Collins inquired. After a day off and a rainout, he played Wednesday and then, legging out a double on Thursday, he came up lame.

Also on Thursday, Collins announced that Syndergaard was scratched from his start that day due to biceps tendinitis, with the right-hander instead pushed back to start Sunday in Washington. Matt Harvey had to pitch a day ahead of schedule, performed badly, and so the Mets lost their best hitter and a sixth game in a row in what had been the club's worst day to date in 2017.

On Friday, this interesting tidbit came out in Washington: The club wanted Syndergaard to get an MRI exam on his biceps and he refused. He threw a bullpen session that day, declared himself healthy and that was the end of it. Until he got on the mound Sunday, gave up five runs in the first inning and later had to come out.

The Mets termed Syndergaard's issue Sunday a "possible lat strain."

It's hard to fathom how Syndergaard's refusal to go for a medical test was accepted by the Mets. It's not as if they asked him to get surgery or an invasive procedure. The team wanted information -- it may turn out needed information -- to assess his fitness to pitch. But he refused, and so the club went forward with its second most valuable player and not with a full picture of things.

With Syndergaard out now, the New York rotation that was the envy of every other club is a shell of itself. The Mets had seven strong starters candidates in spring training. Now Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Seth Lugo are all hurt. Matz and Lugo won't pitch in May, and the prognosis for Syndergaard won't be known until he has an exam in New York on Monday morning.

You can and should bet that things are going to change with the Mets and how general manager Sandy Alderson handles medical issues. It's clear that an inmates-running-the-asylum model won't do.

Less than 20 percent of this baseball season is over. All kinds of things could change for the Giants and the Mets. Injuries could turn out to be less severe than projected. Poor play could get crisp. Underperformance is sure to fade. Both teams have fallen into a hole right now that could get deeper, but it doesn't have to.

There were some pretty important lessons for both clubs from the first month. Each needs to learn them.

Monday’s six-pack

— Nationals 23, Mets 5— Noah Syndegaard is headed to the DL (lat). No bueno.

— Anthony Rendon was 6-6 with three HR’s, 10 RBI; his 16 total bases is three short of the all-time record (Shawn Green).

— Jazz 104, Clippers 91— People who run the Clippers have some hard decisions to make.

— Diamondbacks 2, Rockies 0 (13)— Weirdly low-scoring game between these division rivals.

— Cold-weather Cleveland Browns traded up to draft a kicker from Arizona State; what could possibly go wrong?

— Buffalo Bills fired their GM the day AFTER the draft, which is very strange.

May good month/bad month MLB starting pitchers

For horse racing fans, May is all about the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. For baseball purists, May is simply the second month of the season as we head toward summer. For die-hard baseball fans that enjoy handicapping America’s pastime, it also signals the arrival of our annual May Good Month/Bad Month pitchers report.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of May. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in May, winning 33 percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each May over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s May list.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (15-3, 8-1 A)

Bumgarner is one the premier pitchers in baseball, though not the best bike rider which is why he starts this month on the DL. The left-hander is winless thus far after four starts, but that is a function of San Francisco not scoring as much as anything. MadBum is presumed to return to winning ways when he comes back.

Johnny Cueto, San Francisco Giants (12-4, 6-0 H)

Ceuto is the perfect No. 2 starter on almost any team and his array of starts and stops in his delivery keeps hitters off-balance. To date his numbers are off much like his team, but he's been top notch on May.

Zack Greinke, Arizona Diamondbacks (10-5, 4-2 A)

After a down year in 2016, Greinke is returning to his form of old. While he might not throw as hard as a few years ago, he has an outstanding collection of pitches to keep batter's guessing. The righty is the leader of an improving Arizona staff.

Phil Hughes, Minnesota Twins (10-5, 6-2 H)

Once thought of as a potential ace, Hughes has turned out to be a serviceable starting pitcher. Though he's enjoyed good success this month, he has an ERA around 4.5 for his career and team's have a batting average of about .270 against him.

* Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (12-4, 7-1 A)

The King has right shoulder inflammation and will not likely return until the middle of May. Though only 31, the velocity continues to drop and Hernandez is finding his way to the DL more often after a decade of heavy usage.

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (11-5, 6-2 H)

Kershaw is still the best pitcher in baseball and has been for some time. His numbers are that of another era, as opposing teams are batting .205 lifetime against him. Already a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Lance Lynn, St. Louis Cardinals (8-3, 6-1 H)

Lynn is back from elbow surgery and has been better than new with every one of current stats well below career norms. What we have witnessed is more tilt on the breaking pitches and he's really spotting his fastball expertly.

David Price, Boston Red Sox (11-5, 5-1 H)

Price's rehab has been coming along and at the end of April was supposed to start throwing to batters. If all goes well, should return sometime this month. Great talent who has lost a little on the fastball, however, secondary pitches are still excellent.

Garrett Richards, Los Angeles Angels (8-4, 4-2 H)

Has not thrown since suffering biceps strain and has not been cleared to throw. Richards is elite talent who keeps finding ways to get hurt. The Angels could really use their ace.

* Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox (10-3, 4-1 A)

Sale is at the top of his game and embraced the role of being Boston's best pitcher. The big left-hander decided to sacrifice a little velocity (still throws in the mid 90's) in order to pitch deeper into games and to say that is working is an understatement. Like Kershaw, is a must watch hurler.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Andrew Cashner, Texas Rangers (3-9, 1-4 H)

Overrated starting pitcher for years who fits the old Yogi Berra line "He pitches good enough to lose." Cashner's ERA remains under 4 for his career, but makes that one or two mistakes that costs his team's games. Currently has more walks than strikeouts.

Anibal Sanchez, Detroit Tigers (4-11, 2-6 A)

Sanchez is 33 and his stuff has gotten bad enough where Detroit can no longer keep him in the rotation. He is now doing long relief or middle of the game relief and Sanchez has hardly been a relief with an ERA over 9.

Ervin Santana, Minnesota Twins (3-8, 1-4 H)

Santana has been fantastic to start the year for Minnesota, with an ERA under one and teams batting an unfathomable .116 against him. Will this continue, no, because no matter how Santana starts, fast or slow, he almost always is around career numbers. Nonetheless, he has been overwhelming.
