Friday's Diamond Notes
May 4, 2017

Hottest team: White Sox (7-3 last 10)

At 15-12, Chicago has been one of the biggest surprises in baseball through the first month. Considering the Sox lost ace Chris Sale to Boston in the offseason, the Chicago pitching staff owns the lowest ERA in the American League at 3.24. The White Sox grabbed a series split at Kansas City following an 8-3 triumph on Thursday as +140 underdogs to improve to 4-3 on their current road trip.

The next stop for Chicago is Camden Yards to face the Orioles for a weekend series. Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez takes on his former team in the opener as the right-hander owns a 3-1 record and 3.27 ERA in spite of allowing 14 hits and seven runs (six earned) in six innings of a 7-3 loss at Detroit his last time out. The White Sox have compiled a solid 7-2 record against left-handed starting pitchers this season as they will see Baltimore southpaw Wade Miley on Friday.

Coldest team: Royals (2-8 last 10)

It’s amazing to think the two teams with the worst records in the American League met in the ALCS two seasons ago. Kansas City and Toronto have each won nine games this season, but we’ll focus on the Royals, who have not won a series since sweeping the Angels in mid-April. The Royals have lost 11 of their last 13 games overall, while not winning consecutive contests since that home sweep of Los Angeles.

Kansas City will try to turn around its luck against AL Central co-leader Cleveland at home as the Royals dropped the final eight meetings with the Indians last season. Right-hander Jason Hammel is winless in five starts this season for the Royals, while not lasting past the third inning in his last two outings. The Royals have been dreadful against division foes by posting a 2-10 record inside the AL Central.

Hottest pitcher: Dallas Keuchel, Astros (5-0, 1.21 ERA)

Houston is looking to become the first team to 20 victories this season, as Keuchel is responsible for five of those wins. In 2015, Keuchel took the American League storm by capturing the Cy Young award, but took a step back last season. The southpaw has delivered a quality outing in all six starts, while not giving up more than two earned runs in a start this season. Keuchel has tossed at least seven innings in each outing, while his lone complete game came in a 4-2 triumph at Cleveland.

The Astros head out west to take on the Angels in Anaheim as Keuchel shut down the Halos in his last start, 5-1 on April 19. Keuchel has won six of his previous seven outings against the Angels since 2015, with the only loss coming in L.A. in September 2015 by a 3-2 count.

Coldest pitcher: Yovani Gallardo, Mariners (1-3, 5.08 ERA)

Seattle has played well at home this season, but Gallardo is winless in a pair of starts at Safeco Field. The former Brewers’ standout is responsible for one win in five starts since coming over in the offseason, while allowing four earned runs in three of his past four appearances.

Gallardo faces the Rangers on Friday, a team that he compiled a 13-11 record back in 2015. The right-hander picked up a no-decision in his only appearance against Texas last season as a member of the Orioles in an 8-4 defeat, but the Rangers enter the series opener this season at 0-5 off a win, coming off Thursday’s victory at Houston.

Biggest OVER run: Twins (6-0 last six)

After starting the season at 12-5-3 to the UNDER, Minnesota has turned the corner on the OVER run by cashing six straight OVERS. The Twins are coming off three high-scoring games in a series victory over the Athletics by plating 9, 7, and 5 runs, while eclipsing the five-run mark in six of the past seven contests.

Minnesota hosts Boston in the series opener at Target Field as five of the previous six home contests have finished OVER the total. The Red Sox are 5-1-1 to the UNDER in the last seven road games, but five of seven matchups between Boston and Minnesota last season went OVER the total.

Biggest UNDER run: Indians (6-1 last seven)

Cleveland received an unexpected off day on Thursday thanks to poor weather in Detroit as the Indians travel to Kansas City for the weekend. The Tribe scored a total of six runs in the three-game set against the Tigers after plating 12 runs in Sunday’s blowout of the Mariners.

Cleveland’s offense hasn’t been stellar in their past three road series openers by putting up 3, 3, and 1, including a solid pitching performance in one of those games from Danny Salazar. The right-hander heads to the mound in the opener against the Royals as Cleveland owns a 3-0-1 mark to the UNDER in his last four starts, while dominating Kansas City in three starts in 2016.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks at Rockies

The top two teams in the NL West are not the Dodgers and Giants, at least through one month. Colorado and Arizona hook up for a key series atop the division at Coors Field as the Rockies captured two of three from the Diamondbacks last weekend in Phoenix.

The Rockies return home following a 4-2 road swing, capped off by an extra-innings victory at San Diego on Thursday. Colorado has won three of four home series openers this season, while posting a 6-3 home mark against division foes. German Marquez makes his third start of the season for Colorado, as he tossed six scoreless innings in a 2-0 defeat in 12 innings at Arizona last Sunday.

Arizona heads back west after dropping two of three at Washington, while scoring three runs in the final two losses. The D-backs hand the ball to their ace in the series opener as Zack Greinke is coming off three straight starts decided by one run. Greinke picked up a no-decision against Colorado last weekend, as the D-backs squandered a 6-1 lead in a 7-6 defeat. Arizona owns a 1-3 record in Greinke’s four starts against Colorado since last season, but the only victory came at Coors Field.

Betcha didn’t know: The Yankees and Cubs are another highlight game on the Friday slate (which you probably did know) at Wrigley Field. New York is making its first trip to the North Side of Chicago since splitting a two-game series with the Cubs in 2014. Since the start of last season, the Yankees have slumped to a 4-9 interleague record away from the Bronx, including losing two of three at Pittsburgh last month.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-170) at Phillies

Biggest public underdog: Giants (+100) at Reds

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-145 to -155) at Padres

Sloppy track awaits Kentucky Oaks
May 5, 2017

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Rain is falling Friday morning at Churchill Downs, producing a sloppy track for the $1 million Kentucky Oaks later in the afternoon.

Track officials have posted conditions as ''sloppy'' for the main track and ''good'' for races over the grass course.

The Oaks, the premier event for 3-year-old fillies, headlines the second-best attended day at the track.

Last year's Oaks Day attracted a record 124,589, the third best total in the sport topped only by the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

As for the Derby, the National Weather Service offers a glimmer of hope. The latest forecast calls for the rain to clear out by 2 p.m. Saturday, leaving about five hours until post time for the track to dry out.

Paradise Woods the favorite in Oaks
May 4, 2017

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Bob Baffert knows a good horse when he sees one.

And the Hall of Fame trainer likes what he sees in Paradise Woods. All he had to do was watch her run away from his Abel Tasman in the Santa Anita Oaks.

''Paradise Woods is an extremely talented filly,'' said Baffert, who trained 2015 Triple Crown winner of American Pharaoh. ''I watched her school the other day at Santa Anita and, wow, she's imposing. She's really, really special.''

She is the 5-2 favorite for Friday's $1 million race for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs on the day before the Kentucky Derby.

She has had back-to-back runaway victories, including an 11-length romp in the Santa Anita Oaks. The daughter of Union Rags was also second in her debut at the California track. Paradise Woods will start from the No. 4 post position in the 14-horse field.

Trainer Richard Mandella thinks that's a great spot for the horse as he goes for his first Oaks win in four tries.

''We're here to do the best we can,'' he said. ''I've been here and know the obstacles involved with a race like this. The crowd, the competition. And I haven't had a lot of luck at Churchill.''

Paradise Woods faces a strong field in the 1 1/8-mile race.

The second choice is Miss Sky Warrior, who is listed at 9-2 and has won five of six starts, with four straight graded stakes triumphs. There was no catching her in last month's Grade 2 Gazelle at Aqueduct, where she won by 13 lengths. She drew the No. 10 post.

''I don't know if I could've drawn it up any better,'' trainer Kelly Breen said. ''If they let me draw the (post position) pills and decide who went where, the 10 post is probably the best spot for us. Paco (Lopez) is a great gate rider with a good head on his shoulders. He'll be able to see what we're going to do.''

Miss Sky Warrior's 160 points earned toward the Oaks were just 10 behind leader Farrell, who has five wins and a third in seven starts. He has won four in a row by a combined 15 1/2 lengths. Farrell will make her longest start from the No. 7 post as the 5-1 co-third choice with Abel Tasman.

The distance doesn't concern Farrell trainer Wayne Catalano.

''She's had a few under her belt, so I don't think that's going to be a problem,'' he said.

Abel Tasman has three wins and two seconds in six starts with Baffert. Salty carries 6-1 odds and, like Paradise Woods, has won two of her last three starts.

Post time is 6:12 p.m.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Odds to win the Big X football title this coming fall:
5-7: Oklahoma
14-5: Oklahoma State
3-1: Texas
6-1: Kansas State
7-1: West Virginia
11-1: TCU
65-1: Baylor
75-1: Iowa State, Texas Tech
150-1: Kansas

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……….

13) FOX Sports hired former NFL QB Jay Cutler to replace John Lynch on its NFL telecasts with Kevin Burkhart. 34-year old Cutler hasn’t definitively said that he is retired; isn’t he better than any of the QB’s Lynch has with the 49ers?

I’m very curious to hear Cutler on the air. Would be funny if he turned out to be a better analyst than Tony Romo. Cutler’s first game at FOX will be a Bears’ preseason game, so we’ll find out very quickly if he will be willing to criticize people he knows well.

12) Kendrys Morales homered off of Chris Archer last nite; he is now 15-25 in his career against Archer- that is what players call “ownage”.

11) Cavaliers 115, Raptors 94— Cleveland/Golden State are a combined 13-0 in playoffs. Not the most interesting event to follow, at least not yet.

10) Orioles’ starter Wade Miley was taken out after four batters last nite— he was hit by line drives in consecutive AB’s, by Jose Abreu/Avasail Garcia. Abreu hit him on the left forearm, Garcia’s liner hit Miley in the butt.

9) Dodgers’ pitcher Rich Hill was supposed to throw four innings on a rehab start this week, but lasted only six batters, bad news for the Dodgers. Hill has chronic blister problems on his left hand.

Logan Forsythe (hamstring) was also shut down on his rehab assignment.

8) Brandon McCarthy tweaked his shoulder in the weight room, had his start pushed back to Sunday; Clayton Kershaw moves up a day.

Mets’ TV analyst Keith Hernandez says players work out too hard now before and in between games; hard to argue with him.

7) This is where I remind you that Joe Thornton played four NHL playoff games, with a torn ACL and MCL. Hockey players don’t get tweaked.

6) Broadcaster Kenny Albert worked 12 NHL playoff games in 12 days in five different cities last month; busy guy, tremendous announcer.

5) Big trend in NBA betting now is when teams come home down 2-0 in a series, the team down 2-0 has covered the first half in Game 3 seven times in a row.

4) Nothing quite as aggravating as watching a pitcher on your fantasy team pitch when Kerwin Danley is behind the plate; he is a horrible umpire and always has been. He played college ball at San Diego State with Tony Gwynn.

3) Marlins led the Mets 7-3 in middle of 7th inning last nite, they brought Brad Ziegler in to start the 7th inning. Ziegler threw 19 pitches, faced six batters, gave up six hits in a truly awful effort.

2) Marwin Gonzalez homered in four straight games this week, making him the first player ever to do that while playing four different positions- 1B, 3B, LF, RF.

1— Further evidence that the NBA doesn’t need 7-game series; teams that take a 3-0 series lead are 123-0 in that series. Hockey is much better suited for 7-game series than basketball. At least four times, an NHL team has won a series after trailing 3-0.

Weekend Outlook
May 5, 2017

The Royals (-9.6 units), Giants (-9.1) and Blue Jays (-12.6) have been the worst bets of the season so far. But the good news is that one of them should soon bounce back and be undervalued in price for a few weeks. It's Toronto's starting rotation that stands out. They have the ability to carry them while waiting for the bats to wake up.

Kansas City averages an MLB-low 2.9 runs a game and get a visit from Cleveland this weekend. The Royals have washed off the strench of losing nine straight and have won two of their last four. The Royals are second-best at 16-9-2 to the Under this season. More on this series below.

The best Under team in baseball is surprisingly the Red Sox at 18-9-1. Boston led MLB in runs scored last season, but are averaging just 3.9 runs a game this season. The good new is they allow only 3.8. They go to Minnesota to play the Twins who won't go away in the AL Central and sit only a half-game behind first-place.

The Giants get a chance to make up some ground in the standings at Cincinnati.

Here's a look at my favorites match-ups of the weekend:

Yankees (17-9) at Cubs (16-12)

Scheduled rotation: Pineda (3-1) vs. Hendricks (2-1), Montgomery (1-1) vs. Anderson (2-1), Severino (2-2) vs. Lester (1-1)
Series price: Cubs -160

This weekend's Yankees-Cubs three-game set at Wrigley Field has everything needed to put it in the epic May series category. I don't know who else is in that category, but this one seems like a great place charter member. Here's some qualifying questions

Does it have an iconic setting? Does it feature the most recent World Series Champion that waited 108 years in between titles going against an iconic franchise with the most World Series titles (27)? Does it feature the reigning NL MVP against a rookie leading the majors in home runs? And did Babe Ruth call a home run shot in a World Series at the same park?

I can put a check mark next to each of those on the check list, and yes, I am very excited about the series. Everything from the uniforms to both teams being in first-place has me looking forward to watching every game.

Astros (19-10) at Angels (15-15)

Scheduled rotation: Keuchel (5-0) vs. Chavez (2-4), McCullers (2-1) vs. Ramirez (3-2), Fiers (0-1) vs. Shoemaker
Series Price: Astros -160

The Angels return home after a six game road trip (3-3) where they lost the last two at Seattle. Houston dropped Thursday's homestand finale to the Rangers, but took three of four in the series to extend its first-place lead in the AL West over the Angels to 4.5 games. The Angels are 16-5 in their last 21 home games, but Houston is 16-6 in its last 22 meetings. Houston is currently on an 8-2 Over run on the road.

I'll be rooting for the Angels to keep its home roll going because watching baseball in a Las Vegas sports book is just better at night when the Dodgers and Angels matter. It's a livelier, more festive atmosphere and I enjoy that. Having said that, Friday looks impossible against Keuchel who looking Cy Youngish again.

Indians (15-12) at Royals (9-18)

Scheduled rotation: Salazar (2-2) vs. Hammel (0-3), Tomlin (2-3) vs. Vargas (4-1), Bauer (2-3) vs. Duffy (2-2)
Series price: Indians -150

The best thing about this series looks to be betting all the games Under. The Royals can't score and the Indians are on a 12-3-1 Under run. Lately, betting against the Royals has been a winning move as they're on a 2-11 run. And then of course we have some recent history with the Indians winning the past eight meetings. Eventually some on the Royals is going start hitting the ball and they'll score some runs. If I thought I could get any production from the KC lineup, I'd side with them Saturday and Sunday. Under is the word in this series.

Diamondbacks (17-13) at Rockies (18-11)

Scheduled rotation: Greinke (2-2) vs. Anderson (1-3), Corbin (2-3) vs. Marquez (0-1), Walker (3-1) vs. Chatwood (2-4)
Series price: Rockies -130

If your looking to bet baseball's most profitable pitcher, Taijuan Walker is your guy Sunday afternoon at Coors Field. Arizona has gone 5-1 behind Walker giving him +5.5 units. The Snakes have won his last four starts. He missed the Rockies series last weekend at Chase Field, where Colorado took two-of-three. Arizona has the fortune of missing rookie lefthander Kyle Freeland (+4.8 units) in this series after losing 3-1 to him last week. Colorado leads MLB with +8.7 units of profit overall at 17-11. First-place in the NL West and I give Arizona an edge in all three pitching match-ups which tells me taking +110 with them in the series is a good deal.

LEADING OFF: Gardner powering up, O's need Bundy's innings
May 6, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

BIG-TIME BRETT

Surging Brett Gardner again tries to power the Yankees over the Cubs a day after his three-run, ninth-inning homer gave New York a 3-2 win. Gardner has five home runs in six games, including multihomer efforts against Toronto on May 2 and Baltimore on April 29. The Yankees' leadoff hitter had a slow start to the season, but his on-base percentage is up to .356 and he saw 29 pitches in five at-bats Friday. Rookie left-hander Jordan Montgomery (1-1, 4.15 ERA) pitches for New York against Chicago's Brett Anderson (2-1, 6.23).

GIVE `EM A BREAK

Twice in its past three games, Baltimore has gotten three or fewer outs from its starting pitcher, so the Orioles could use a lengthy outing from Dylan Bundy against the White Sox. Bundy (4-1, 1.82) is the right man to ask: he's pitched at least six innings in each of his six starts this year after only reaching the sixth three times in his career before this season. Baltimore's bullpen has been strained after Kevin Gausman was ejected in the second inning Wednesday for hitting Xander Bogaerts with a curveball and Wade Miley was struck by consecutive line drives in the first inning Friday.

BUXTON RECOVERING

Twins manager Paul Molitor said center fielder Byron Buxton was still experiencing headaches a day after running into the wall twice will chasing down fly balls. Buxton passed his initial concussion tests and Molitor said the Twins remained hopeful that he could return to the lineup this weekend. Molitor said they will continue to give Buxton tests while the headaches remain, but they are confident he did not experience a concussion.

DON'T WALK THIS WAY

Control problems have hindered Braves ace Julio Teheran this season. He has walked 18 batters in 35 1/3 innings, including three walks while allowing six runs in six innings in a 7-5 loss to the Mets on Monday. Teheran (2-2, 4.33) has three or more walks in five of his six starts and will look for better results when he starts a game against Mike Leake and the Cardinals.

CORBIN ROX

Arizona lefty Patrick Corbin was brilliant when he faced Colorado last Sunday, throwing 6 1/3 scoreless innings. But he settled for a no-decision as the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies 2-0 in 13 innings. Corbin (2-3, 2.29) will try to handcuff the Rockies again, this time at Coors Field against lefty Tyler Anderson (1-3, 7.71).

SECOND TIME AROUND

Seattle's Chase De Jong gets a second chance after struggling in his first major league start - a spot entry against reigning AL champion Cleveland after ace Felix Hernandez went on the DL. De Jong (0-2, 11.05) didn't make it out of the third inning against the Indians, but he'll get another shot to prove himself in a game against Texas. De Jong may get a few more starts regardless, as Seattle is without three rotation fixtures after placing James Paxton on the disabled list Friday - Drew Smyly is also out.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Odds to win the Big 14 football title this coming fall:
9-5 Ohio State
12-5: Michigan
13-5: Wisconsin, Penn State
15-1: Northwestern Nebraska
7-1: West Virginia
16-1: Michigan State
20-1: Iowa
40-1: Minnesota
60-1: Indiana
125-1: Illinois, Maryland, Purdue
200-1: Rutgers

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random stuff for a soggy Sunday……

13) Busy day today; finally had enough with the keyboard on my MacBook Pro, took it back to the Apple Store and it is in the shop for a week or so—we’ll make do with our backup laptop until then.

It is nice to be able to type the letter “t” without wanting to throw something.

12) Should go buy Apple stock; when are their stores not crowded? They make a ton of money and their products aren’t even that durable.

11) One of the guys who owns Always Dreaming, the horse who won the Kentucky Derby, also owns the NHL’s Florida Panthers.

10) Adrian Gonzalez has played in 1,833 major league games over 14 years; this is the first time he has gone on the disabled list.

9) Michael Ynoa threw six scoreless innings of relief for the Orioles Friday, the first pitcher to throw 100+ pitches in relief and not allow a run since Randy Johnson in 2001- the Big Unit struck 17 batters that day.

8) Way of the world now: 67 players will attend the NBA Draft Combine; only 18 of them are college seniors.

7) Matt Albers got a save for Washington Friday in his 461st major league game, the 103rd one he has finished- that was the 2nd most games finished without ever saving a game. Now he has one.

6) Quick Albers story: April 2011, I’m in Las Vegas and Albers is on the Red Sox. He comes into a game in Kansas City in relief of Daniel Bard, who Bobby Valentine was trying to make into a starter—I had added Bard on my fantasy team.

This was one of Bard’s best starts for Boston (he didn’t have many); I’m supposed to be across the street at Battista’s meeting friends for dinner, but I wait to see if Albers can get out of this inning- I needed Bard to become a decent starter.

Nope. Billy Butler hit a ball off Albers that might still be going; by the time it landed over the fountains, I was already halfway across the street, headed to dinner. Totally unsure how Albers is still in the big leagues, but there he is and on a good team.

5) Texas Rangers TV analyst Tom Grieve was saying this weekend that the quality of the wood in bats has to be much worse now than when he played in the 70’s. Couple of bats in the Texas-Seattle game Friday splintered into pieces, making Grieve laugh.

4) 30 Cuban players played in the major leagues last year; so far in five weeks this year, 20 Cubans have already appeared in the big leagues.

3) Miami Marlins’ pitching staff is in shambles; they’re starting a reliever Sunday- their spot starter Saturday, Odrisamer Despaigne, allowed six runs in the first inning and Miami never even had a reliever warming up.

2) I’m curious as to how many people have played the President of the United States in a movie; has to be a pretty high number.

1) A 5-star recruit named Kevin Knox chose Kentucky Saturday over a bunch of schools, including Florida State, his father’s alma mater. You can make the argument that John Calipari is the best recruiter………ever.
