Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Poorly kept secret: Lakers are going to hire Byron Scott as head coach.

-- Mets-Rockies are rumored to be talking about a big trade; if Colorado trades Tulowitzki or Carlos Gonzalez, they better get lot of pitching back.

-- Miami Marlins have the best replay analyst; they've been right on 16 out of 20 replay challenges, best percentage in the major leagues.

-- Atlanta Falcons traded Brett Favre after his rookie season because he partied too much; sound familiar? Johnny Manziel better hope history repeats itself.

-- Cardinals signed AJ Pierzynski to be catcher until Yadier Molina gets healthy.

-- Fantasy football owners will be challenged by 11 new offensive coordinators in the NFL this year-- which ones will be the most aggressive? Important question.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Thoughts from the desert........

13) Made my first visit this trip to In 'n Out Burger last night; just a tremendous milkshake, excellent hamburgers. We need In 'n Out in upstate New York.

12) Tampa Bay Rays have won eight in a row, are just 4.5 games out of second Wild Card spot with 59 games left to play; don't think they're selling off players.

11) Went to the Fab 48 basketball tournament last night at Bishop Gorman HS; way better talent than the event I was at Wednesday. Still no rosters, but the bleachers were comfortable at least and the games were great fun to watch.

10) Memo to parents watching your kids: Please be quiet. Sat behind a guy who was screaming instructions (Get the ball inside!!! Get the ball to Andre!!!) for the whole damn game. Screaming instructions doesn't help; they have a coach.

9) Want a long road trip? There is a team here from the Canary Islands, which is located just off the northwest coast of mainland Africa, west of Morocco. Boy do they have good players; little deficient at point guard, but they have several kids in the 6-4 to 6-8 range who have great potential.

8) Texas football coach Charlie Strong booted/suspended at least eight players since he took over as head coach. First year is the best time to lay down the law.

7) In his last four starts, Felix Hernandez allowed five earned runs in 30 IP-- he won only one of those four games-- Seattle scored 13 runs in his last five starts.

6) Yasiel Puig had three triples and a double Friday night, first player to do that since 1990, first Dodger with three triples in a game since 1901.

5) Orioles are now 10-3 in extra innings; Buck Showalter is a great manager.

4) Lucas Duda hit a dramatic 9th-inning homer off former Met Francisco Rodriguez, giving New York an unlikely 3-2 win at Miller Park, snapping Brewers' four-game winning streak.

3) Cincinnati lost its 7th straight game- they miss injured Votto-Phillips- they're now 51-51 and 6 games out of first, 3.5 games out of the second Wild Card slot.

2) Zack Greinke struck out four Giants in the third inning Friday, making him the third pitcher in history to strike out four guys in an inning more than once. Chuck Finley did it three times, AJ Burnett has done it twice.

1) I'm off to a junior college showcase event this morning; looking forward to seeing how competitive the older kids are, playing for a college scholarship.

Dodgers, Giants square off

July 27, 2014

L.A. Dodgers (58-47) at San Francisco Giants (57-47)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. ET

Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Dodgers -120, Giants +100, Total 7 (Over -115)

The Dodgers and Giants continue their battle for the National League West on Sunday night.

Los Angeles will be looking to sweep San Francisco after earning an 8-1 win on Friday and a 5-0 shutout performance by Clayton Kershaw last night.

Los Angeles is in the midst of a nine-game road trip in which it is playing three teams with winnings records. Over the first two series, the club was a poor 2-4, as they dropped to 1.5 games behind the Giants in the division. In the Dodgers' most recent set against the Pirates, they won the first contest, but were dominated over the final two games, as they were outscored 18-8. 1B Adrian Gonzalez has not been the problem during this recent poor stretch though, going 8-for-22 (.364) with two doubles, a home run and 5 RBI. San Francisco has not wanted to relinquish its hold on first place in the division and has been victorious in five of seven games coming into this series. Heading into tonight, the Dodgers hold a 1/2-game lead on the division.

The Giants nearly finished up a four-game sweep in Philadelphia earlier this week, but were unable to get any offense going on Thursday night as they lost 2-1 while going just 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position. C Buster Posey (.284 BA) has been on fire since the All-Star Game, going 11-for-28 (.393) with three doubles, a home run and 7 RBI. The pitching matchup for this contest will pit LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (11-5, 3.39 ERA) of the Dodgers against Giants RHP Yusmeiro Petit (3-3, 4.24).

Including the last two days, the Giants hold a solid 28-21 edge over the Dodgers in this matchup over the past three seasons, going 13-10 in home games and 7-5 this year. Hyun-Jin Ryu has been a tremendous addition to the Dodgers staff since entering the majors last season and has compiled a 25-13 record with a 3.14 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in his first 49 starts. While his ERA has improved this year by nearly a half a run, some of his other numbers have declined, as he has walked 2.3 batters this year compared to just 1.8 last season. He has also had a lot of trouble against lefties on the year, allowing them to hit .280 against him over 111 batters faced.

With that said, Ryu has been an extremely reliable starter and has pitched at least six innings while allowing three or fewer runs in 15 of his 19 starts. If you take away his start earlier in the month against the Tigers (2.1 IP, 10 H, 7 ER), Ryu is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and a 23:1 K/BB ratio in his three other July outings.

He’s already faced the Giants seven times in his young MLB career, putting together a 3-3 record with a 3.24 ERA (1.44 WHIP) and has struck out just 5.0 batters per nine innings with one home run allowed in 41.2 frames. OF Hunter Pence (8-for-18, 2 doubles, 5 RBI) and 2B Marco Scutaro (5-for-12) have had no issues seeing the ball out of Ryu’s hand while SS Brandon Crawford is hitless with two strikeouts in 10 at-bats against the lefty.

Coming into this series, the Dodgers’ bullpen has gone 8-17 with a 3.80 ERA and 1.34 WHIP while successfully saving 32-of-38 (84%) games. Kenley Jansen (3.32 ERA, 29 saves) has been absolutely amazing in his past 11 games, allowing a meager five hits with no runs while striking out 14 batters in 11 inning. For the season, the closer has struck out 13.9 batters per nine innings.

Yusmerio Petit was expected to start for San Franciso but the club has now named newcomer Jake Peavy (1-9, 4.72 ERA) the starter. The Giants picked up Peavy from the Red Sox on Saturday after a rough 20 starts in the American League. Run support was a major issue for the right-hander, who was backed by two or fewer in each of his last eight outings, compiling an 0-6 record with a 4.71 ERA.

That problem may not change with the Giants, who are batting .158 while scoring two runs during their current three-game losing streak.

Peavy can go a long way to changing that since he's 14-2 with a 2.21 ERA in 25 career starts against them. He tossed a three-hitter in an 8-1 road win for Boston on Aug. 25.

Entering Friday, the Giants’ relievers had combined to go 20-9 with a solid 2.72 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, while converting 32-of-45 (71%) save opportunities. Closer Santiago Casilla (1.16 ERA, 7 saves) has already blown three saves this year while getting lucky with batters hitting .208 BABIP.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Lakers are going to pay Byron Scott $17M for four years to be head coach.

-- Dodgers-Diamondbacks have had issues over the years; their AAA teams had a nasty brawl Saturday night in Reno. 10 players were ejected.

-- Red Sox lost Jake Peavy's last nine starts; they get two pitching prospects from the Giants in exchange for the veteran righthander.

-- Trade for Peavy may be a sign that Matt Cain's elbow is in bad shape.

-- Angels signed Randy Wolf to a minor league deal; maybe I'll see him pitching for Salt Lake City here in Las Vegas when I go to Cashman Field Monday night.

-- Colorado Rockies gave out 15,000 Troy Tulowitzki jerseys Saturday; too bad they spelled his name TULOWIZKI on the back of the shirts. Oy.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) Spent Saturday afternoon at a junior college basketball showcase; one game at a time, 20:00 running time halves, teams sub five-at-a-time every 5:00. Kids trying for college scholarships; not many big-time schools were there from what I could tell, mostly Sun Belt/C-USA/Big West schools, with D-II and junior college teams.

Highly competitive, none of the frills they have at the high-end high school events crosstown. Games were physical, fast-paced, fun to watch.

12) Problem is, parking lot at the Boys Club is really small and it was 105 out, so you had to walk couple blocks from a shopping center to get to the gym. Luckily I am in tip-top physical condition....hehe..... and I won some cash on the way back to my car, playing video poker in a bar in the shopping center. A good day!!!!

11) Either it was free to get in or no one bothered to charge me, which is good, but packets with player information were $175, which sucks. For $175, I'd like to park close to the gym. There was this one big kid who runs like a deer and is 6-8 or so; wish I could tell you his name, think he has potential, whoever he is.

10) One kid got upended on a play near the basket and hurt his neck; they took him off on a stretcher. Scary thing; who plays for his medical care? Chances are the kid isn't from Las Vegas.

9) The most frustrating thing about watching all these kids play games while trying to impress someone so they'll give him a scholarship is this: Kids do not know what coaches want to see. One kid tossed up a brick from behind the arc, then pouted as his man went right by him on the other end. No bueno.

Coaches want players who give off positive energy; they get loose balls, pass the ball, they shoot when they are open. No pouting, no laziness, just positive energy.

8) Nothing says Vegas in July like me watching Toronto-Saskatchewan on TV in a sportsbook; CFL teams can challenge pass interference calls on instant replay. I'm guessing that won't happen in the NFL, but would be damn interesting if it did.

7) Toronto Blue Jays snapped a 17-game losing streak in the Bronx when they won 6-4 Saturday; why is Brian McCann playing first base? $195M payroll and they don't have a backup first baseman? Its an important position.

6) Blue Jays are 8-8 since Edwin Encanarcion got hurt; he had a setback in his rehab this weekend, so he'll be sitting out for a while. Toronto needs him.

5) Red Sox have a pitcher in AAA named Anthony Ranaudo who is 7-0, 1.63 in his last nine starts; why don't they bring him up? He's thrown 424 innings in the minor leagues, so he is ready for the bigtime.

4) David Ortiz lost a homer in Tampa Bay when a Red Sox fan (he was wearing a red Boston jersey) reached over the line and tried to catch the ball. Ortiz got a double, the fan got the ball, was tossed from the stadium; he had kids with him, too.

3) NBA is considering a week-long All-Star break; not sure why, unless they plan to add more events to All-Star week. A 64-man 1-on-1 tournament would be a great thing--imagine the interest it would create?!?!?!

2) Had dinner at Battista's Saturday night, my favorite restaurant here in Las Vegas. Dimly lit, great Italian food and a guy walking around playing an accordion.

1) Congrats to Tony Larussa on being inducted into the Hall of Fame today; he did a solid job with my A's, but beat feet to St Louis as soon as the A's weren't owned by Walter Haas anymore, which made them a small market team. In my mind, best manager in Oakland A's history was Dick Williams; #2 is definitely Bob Melvin.

Game of the Day: Dodgers at Giants
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants (-108, 7.0)

The San Francisco Giants are hoping new acquisition Jake Peavy can help them salvage Sunday’s series finale against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, who have pulled one-half game ahead of the Giants in the National League West. The Dodgers have won the first two games of the series by a combined 13-1 while holding the Giants’ offense to nine singles. Peavy, who was acquired from Boston on Saturday for two minor-league pitchers, owns a 14-2 record with a 2.21 ERA in 25 career starts against the Dodgers.

The Giants have lost 18 of their last 24 home games, and the injury bug is proving to be a growing concern. First baseman Brandon Belt (concussion), center fielder Angel Pagan (back) and starting pitcher Matt Cain (right elbow inflammation) are not expected back soon, and catcher Hector Sanchez was placed on the seven-day concussion list Saturday. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is 13-for-31 in eight games since the All-Star break for the Dodgers, who have won four of their last six.

TV:
8:07 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY:
The Giants opened as -108 home favorites and that's where they currently sit. The run total opened at 7.0.

INJURY REPORT:
N/A.

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Dodgers LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (11-5, 3.39 ERA) vs. Giants RH Jake Peavy (1-9, 4.72)

Ryu improved to 7-2 on the road this season after holding Pittsburgh to two runs over seven innings Monday. “He probably had the biggest drop in curveball we’ve seen this year as far as depth,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com. “The guy’s got weapons, and he’s a cool cat on the mound.” Ryu allowed eight runs over two innings against the Giants on April 4 before tossing seven scoreless innings against them two weeks later.

Peavy led the American League with 20 home runs allowed, but had been pitching better of late with a 3.91 ERA and eight walks and 26 strikeouts over his past four starts. Adrian Gonzalez is 4-for-11 with two homers against the 33-year-old, who played for Giants manager Bruce Bochy in San Diego from 2002-06. He’s facing Los Angeles for the first time since Aug. 25, 2013, when he allowed one run in a complete-game victory while pitching for Boston.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in San Francisco.
* Dodgers are 4-1 in Ryu's last five starts versus the Giants.
* Giants are 5-1 in their last six games as a favorite.
* Under is 7-1-1 in Ryu's last nine road starts.

CONSENSUS:
Fifty-four percent of wagers are behind the Dodgers at +100.

Sunday afternoon's must read weather update

The Yankees host the Blue Jays at Yankees Stadium, where there is a chance of thunderstorms and a 65 percent chance of rain in the forecast. There is also expected to be an 11 mile per hour wind blowing out to left field.

The Reds host the Washington Nationals, where there are expected thunderstorms in the area and a 62 percent chance of rain. There will also be a 10 mile per hour blowing out to left field.

The Diamondbacks travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies, where there is a 63 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms. There will be an eight mile per hour wind blowing out to right field.

The Cardinals visit Wrigley field to face the Cubs, where there is a 50 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms. There will also be a 15 mile per hour wind blowing from third to first base.

This pitcher has found success as a fave

The Washington Nationals are currently favored at -118 when they visit the Cincinnati Reds Sunday and that's just the way starter Doug Fister likes it.

The Nationals are 7-1 in Fister's last eight starts when they are favored.

Meanwhile, the Reds are the exact opposite, going 1-7 in their last eight games as an underdog.

This lefty may have an edge in this AL matchup

The New York Yankeesare currently -132 faves against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays in the rubber match of their three-game series and could face some problems against left J.A. Happ.

The Blue Jays are 4-0 in Happ's last four starts against the American League East and 6-1 in his last seven starts versus a team with a winning record.

To make matters worse for the Yanks, they are 2-8 in their last 10 against the AL East and1-4 in their last five games versus a lefty starter.
