Game roundup: Melky homers twice, Jays rip Red Sox
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOSTON
-- Melky Cabrera homered from each side of the plate and drove in five runs, knuckleballer R.A. Dickey baffled Boston for seven innings and the Toronto Blue Jays posted a 14-1 win over the fading Red Sox on Monday night.

It was Toronto's sixth win in seven games and its eighth in 11 against the Red Sox this season. Boston lost for the sixth time in seven games after winning five straight.

Ryan Goins had four hits and drove in four runs for the Blue Jays, who broke it open with a nine-run sixth inning.

Dickey allowed one run and three hits, striking out a season-high 10 and walking one.

Braves 2, Padres 0

ATLANTA
-- Ervin Santana struck out 11 in eight innings, and Atlanta blanked San Diego.

Santana (10-6) allowed just five hits, walked none and matched his career-high strikeout total. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth inning to record his 32nd save.

Evan Gattis' leadoff homer in the seventh inning broke a scoreless tie, and Gattis added a run-scoring single in the eighth.

San Diego fill-in starter Jason Lane limited the Braves to six hits and one run in six-plus innings.

Rays 2, Brewers 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
-- Rookie right-hander Jake Odorizzi delivered another strong outing, and Tampa Bay rallied past Milwaukee.

Odorizzi, who outdueled St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright in his previous start, outlasted Brewers veteran Kyle Lohse on Monday, allowing one run and three hits over seven innings.

The Rays took the lead with a two-out, two-run rally in the sixth off Lohse. James Loney's two-run bloop single made the difference.

Mets 7, Phillies 1

NEW YORK
-- Travis d'Arnaud collected three hits and three RBIs, and Bartolo Colon turned in another solid start as New York beat Philadelphia.

D'Arnaud went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and two doubles. He has reached safely in 21 of his past 25 games.

Colon (10-8) allowed just one run on 10 hits in 7 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six, earning his second consecutive win after going 0-3 in his previous four starts.

Marlins 7, Nationals 6

MIAMI
-- Scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Miami earned a walk-off win over first-place Washington.

With two outs in the ninth, Jeff Baker singled to deep left off Jerry Blevins to win the game.

Nationals closer Rafael Soriano, who entered with a 6-3 lead to start the ninth, could not hold the Marlins back. It was the fourth blown save of the season for Soriano (2-1). Adeiny Hechavarria, who battled through an 11-pitch at-bat against Soriano, hit an RBI triple to tie the score with one out.

Cubs 4, Rockies 1

CHICAGO
-- Tsuyoshi Wada pitched seven strong innings to earn his first major league win in his third career start, and Chicago snapped a two-game losing streak.

Wada (1-1) allowed one run on five hits. He gave up the run in the sixth but then came back to work a scoreless seventh. The left-hander left with a 2-1 lead before the Cubs added two insurance runs in the eighth inning.

Chicago's Emilio Bonifacio had two hits and scored two runs, and Anthony Rizzo drove in two runs.

Astros 7, A's 3

HOUSTON
-- Brett Oberholtzer continued his stretch of solid outings, and Houston backed him with four home runs in a win over Oakland.

Oberholtzer (3-7) allowed more than two earned runs just once over his previous six starts before surrendering three runs on eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings Monday.

Chris Carter, Jason Castro, Marc Krauss and Matt Dominguez homered for the Astros. Stephen Vogt went deep for the A's.

Rangers 4, Yankees 2

ARLINGTON, Texas
-- J.P. Arencibia's two-run single keyed Texas' decisive four-run fifth that made a winner out of right Yu Darvish.

Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre each had run-scoring hits for the Rangers in the fifth.

Darvish (10-6) struck out eight while giving up two runs on nine hits and one walk over seven innings for the Rangers, who won for only the fifth time in July.

New York's Brett Gardner hit two homers among his three hits. Derek Jeter added three hits, giving him 3,420 in his career, one ahead Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski for seventh on the all-time list and third in American League history.

Diamondbacks 2, Reds 1 (15 innings)

CINCINNATI
-- Nick Ahmed's single drove home Martin Prado with the go-ahead run in the 15th inning, lifting Arizona over Cincinnati.

In the 15th, Prado walked with one out. The Arizona third baseman advanced to second on a groundout, then scored when Ahmed, the Diamondbacks' shortstop, laced a single to left-center off J.J. Hoover (1-8).

The Diamondbacks improved to 13-0 in their history in games lasting at least 15 innings.

Pirates 5, Giants 0

SAN FRANCISCO
-- Pittsburgh right-hander Vance Worley took an early cushion and ran with it, pitching his first career shutout in a wire-to-wire victory over San Francisco.

Josh Harrison walked and scored in a four-run first inning, then homered in the second, highlighting a seven-hit Pirates attack that produced a second consecutive win and a seventh in 10 games since the All-Star break.

Worley (4-1) was perfect for four innings and faced the minimum for seven innings. The 26-year-old allowed only four hits, the first three of which were singles, and one walk. He struck out three.

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles (+104, 8.5)

The Los Angeles Angels will have revenge on their minds when they begin a three-game series against the American League East-leading Orioles in Baltimore on Tuesday. Los Angeles dropped a three-game set to Baltimore at home last week, salvaging the finale after a pair of 4-2 defeats. The Angels enter the matchup with a three-game winning streak as they held Detroit to a total of two runs in the three victories following a 6-4 loss in the series opener.

Los Angeles continues its pursuit of first-place Oakland in the AL West as it begins an eight-game road trip at Baltimore, which returns home after a 6-4 West Coast trek. The Orioles are only three games over .500 at home compared to a 32-23 mark on the road. The Angels, who are second in the major leagues in victories with 63, are only 25-22 away from home.

Weaver is 7-4 with a 2.97 ERA in 11 career outings versus the Orioles.

Tillman was forced to settle for a no-decision in Wednesday's showdown with Weaver despite allowing just one run and five hits over six innings. The 26-year-old Anaheim native is 0-1 in his last five starts, although he yielded three earned runs or fewer in each contest. Nationals' RF Jayson Werth, questionable Tuesday

Werth left Monday's game with a sprained ankle and is questionable to play Tuesday against the Marlins.

Angels trending Over on the road behind Weaver

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jered Weaver has been a stud for Over bettors on the road recently. In the veteran's last 11 outings away from Angel Stadium of Anaheim, the Over is 8-2-1.

Weaver gets the ball for the Halos when they face off against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards Tuesday. The Angels are -115 faves with a total of 8.5.

Rain could fall on these stadiums Tuesday

Tuesday has a full slate of MLB action on the board and few matchups could be impacted by some rain and/or thunderstorms.

Forecasts are calling for a 50 percent possibility of scattered thunderstorms at Progressive Field as the Indians host the Seattle Mariners.

Comerica Park in Detroit could see wet conditions as forecasts are also calling for a 50 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms as the Chicago White Sox pay a visit to the Detroit Tigers.

There is a smaller 30 percent chance of thunderstorms hitting Chicago, which could affect the matchup between the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Orioles cashing in for Under bettors

The Baltimore Orioles have scored 441 runs on the season - fifth best in the American League - but they have been a boon for bettors who have backed the Under in recent games.

The Orioles head into Tuesday's game with the Los Angeles Angels with seven consecutive ball games staying under the total.

There was an average of just over five runs per game during the seven-game under streak. There is currently a total of 8.5 for Tuesday's meeting with the Halos.

Road team cashing when this umpire works the plate

When umpire D.J. Reyburn is calling balls and strikes, the road team is on a tear, going 5-0 in his last five games behind the dish.

Reyburn has been down the middle on the season, with the road team and home squad splitting his 18 games, going 9-9 thus far.

He will be at work behind home plate Tuesday evening in Florida as the Miami Marlins host the Washington Nationals. The Nats are currently -133 road faves with a total of 7 on the board.

Check out the team on a smoking hot under streak

Injuries are catching up to the Cincinnati Reds, who have lost nine of their last 10, but it has put them on an impressive under streak.

The Reds have gone under the run total in eight straight games and a 1-9 over/under in their last 10.

Cincinnati is really missing Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips, scoring just 17 runs in their last 10 games. The Reds host the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday with a current total of 7.5.

Seattle Mariners not so hot in Cleveland

The Seattle Mariners open a three-game series in Ohio versus the Cleveland Indians and have been dreadful in recent meetings there.

The Mariners are 0-6 in the last six ball games at Progressive Field, but visit there for the first time in the 2014 season Tuesday.

The Indians are slight home faves in the matchup, currently priced at -107. Trevor Bauer gets the start for the home team, while the visiting Mariners are scheduled to counter with Hisashi Iwakuma.

Over tends to follow this pitcher around

When San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Hudson has taken the mound in recent games, bettors backing the Over have been cashing in. In Hudson's last 10 outings, the Over is 7-2-1.

The veteran gets the Nod for San Fran when they face off against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Bay Area Tuesday. The Giants are currently -115 faves with a total of 6.5.

Over is sizzling when these two teams meet up

The scoreboard operator is always kept busy when the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox face one another, especially at Fenway Park.

Fueled by a pair of homers from Melky Cabrera, the Jays hammered the Sox 14-1 Monday evening, improving the Over/Under record to 8-1-2 on the season. But that record has been flawless at Fenway for fans of the Over as the teams are now 4-0 O/U in Beantown.

With 45 runs scored through the four games in Boston, the teams average a little more than 11 runs per game.

Several books opened Tuesday's matchup with a total of 8.5, which has since moved up to 9.

Astros backers will be happy to see this umpire

At 43-63 on the season and down $-524 units, it has hardly been a banner season for the Houston Astros. But if the 'Stros could have umpire Doug Eddings call balls and strikes every game, maybe it would be a different story.

Houston, currently mired in second-last place in the American League West, are 6-1 in their last seven ball games with Eddings behind home plate. And that's exactly where he'll be when the Astros host the division-leading Oakland A's Tuesday evening. Furthermore, the home team is 4-0 in the last four games that Eddings has umpired behind the dish.

The 'Stros are big +173 home dogs with Scott Feldman on the mound Tuesday. The A's are slated to counter with Jeff Samardzija.

What team struggles with a high total posted?

The fact the Texas Rangers have struggled this season is no secret, but they have been truly awful when a high run total has been posted.

The Rangers are 3-23 in their last 26 games with a total set between 9.0 and 10.5.

Texas host the New York Yankees Tuesday night with a total currently set at 9.0.

Books post total for Rockies-Cubs game

Sportsbooks traditionally hold off on posting totals for ball Chicago Cubs ball games at Wrigley Field and earlier Tuesday, they posted the total for the Colorado Rockies' visit.

With a 30 percent chance of showers and wind blowing from left field to right field at seven mph, books opened the total at 7.5.

Edwin Jackson gets the start for the Cubbies while Jorge De La Rosa will get the ball for the visiting Rockies.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the PGA tournament next week in Louisville........

5-1-- Rory McIlroy-- Going very well right now.

8-1-- Eldrick Woods-- Wouldn't bet him with your money.

10-1-- Adam Scott-- Will have to overcome his shaky putter.

12-1-- Phil Mickelson-- Has become the forgotten man.

20-1-- Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson

30-1-- Charl Schwartzel, Jason Dufner

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

13) Went to a minor league baseball game here in Las Vegas last night; good stuff, minor league ball-- fun, inexpensive entertainment.

12) So Chip Kelly doesn't like the NFL Draft; wonder what he thought of it when he was the coach at Oregon and he could use former Ducks getting drafted as a tool in his recruiting process? Bet he didn't mind it much then.

11) New Orleans Saints are training at the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia this summer; Sean Payton caddied at the PGA Tour event there two years ago, when he was suspended from the Saints after Bountygate.

10) Blake Griffin has a small fracture in his back; maybe he should tone down his dunks to take stress off his back when he lands-- just a suggestion.

9) Potomac Nationals. Class A farm club of Washington, have one of the better mascot names- their politically-themed mascot is called "Uncle Slam".

8) Price of gas here in Las Vegas has caught up to the greedy bastards in upstate New York; most places here now have prices in the $3.70's. Back in December, the prices here were 40-50 cents a gallon cheaper than in New York.

7) Nelson Cruz had trouble finding someone to sign him; he's now 5th in the major leagues in RBI and a huge reason why the Orioles are in first place.

6) Ben Roethlisberger is the 14th highest paid QB in the NFL? Really? How do the Steelers not re-do his contract?

5) AJ Burnett threw 131 pitches in his previous start before last night; he gave up four runs in the first inning Monday, seven runs in five innings overall, and looked awful in a 7-1 loss to the Mets. 131 pitches is a lot for an older pitcher.

4) Its sad watching Ryan Howard play; he's clearly washed up, even has trouble bending down to catch throws from infielders that are around his ankles-- he's been benched against lefty pitchers, but he is owed so much money, he's hard to dump.

3) Nationals led 6-0 in 7th inning at Miami last night, lost 7-6; Marlins score four times in bottom of ninth-- Washington bullpen allowed five of 12 batters they faced to score-- their lead over Atlanta is down to half a game.

2) Media types need to stop whining about the length of baseball games; its not that big a problem. If you don't like your job, quit. This is an issue totally cultivated by media members in an attention deficit-addled society.

1) If you're Steve Ballmer and the deal finally goes down where he gets the Clippers for $2B, on the same day it comes out that Blake Griffin has a small fracture in his back, are you a happy guy? I guess if you're a billionaire, you're always happy.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet

July 30, 2014

Mariners at Indians – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
SEA: Hernandez (11-2, 1.99 ERA)
CLE: Kluber (10-6, 2.77 ERA)

Series recap: The Mariners took care of the Indians on Tuesday, 5-2, thanks to a four-run fourth inning. Seattle cashed as +105 underdogs to even the season series at 2-2 with Cleveland, while all four meetings have finished ‘under’ the total.

What to watch for: The Indians have fallen apart of late, dropping seven of their past nine games, while their starting pitchers have lasted five innings or less five times in this span. The Mariners continue to pitch well, cashing the ‘under in eight consecutive contests. Seattle owns a 6-1 record in Hernandez’s last seven road outings, while the former Cy Young winner shut down Cleveland at home last month in a 3-0 victory.

Angels at Orioles – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
LAA: Richards (11-3, 2.62 ERA)
BAL: Gausman (4-3, 3.67 ERA)

Series recap: The Orioles walked off past the Angels in 12 innings thanks to a Manny Machado solo homer, 7-6 to cash as +125 home ‘dogs. Both teams went back-and-forth in the exciting series opener, as the O’s have now beaten the Halos three of four times this season.

What to watch for: Baltimore has compiled a 3-1 record in Gausman’s last four home outings, while winning four of his previous five starts in the underdog role. For the first time all season, the Angels have dropped consecutive starts by Richards, both as a short favorite against the Tigers and Mariners. However, Los Angeles is 9-2 in Richards’ 11 road outings this season, while the Angels own a dynamic 9-1 record in their last 10 Game 2’s of an away series.

Blue Jays at Red Sox – 7:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
TOR: Buehrle (10-7, 3.19 ERA)
BOS: Workman (1-3, 4.13 ERA)

Series recap: The Jays continued their recent domination of the Red Sox, beating Boston for the fifth time in the past week with last night’s 4-2 triumph. Even more impressive than that streak is Toronto’s perfect 5-0 record this season at Fenway Park, as the Jays have outscored the Sox, 38-13 in Beantown.

What to watch for: With Jon Lester scratched due to a possible trade, the Sox turn to Workman, who has lost each of his past four starts. Toronto has won nine of its past 11 games, but the club owns a dreadful 1-6 record in its previous seven Game 3’s of a road series. The Sox have dropped seven of their last eight contests, while scoring just six runs in the past four games.

Braves at Dodgers – 10:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
ATL: Wood (7-8, 3.44 ERA)
LA: Greinke (12-6, 2.74 ERA)

Series recap: The Dodgers rallied for an 8-4 victory last night after trailing early, 4-2. Los Angeles cashed as -140 home favorites to win four straight games for the first time this season. Prior to Tuesday, the Dodgers had won three consecutive contests seven times in 2014, but never managed to capture four straight victories before last night.

What to watch for: Los Angeles is 6-2 when Greinke starts at Chavez Ravine, while the right-hander split a pair of starts against Atlanta last season. Wood has alternated between the starting rotation and the bullpen for the Braves, but the southpaw has won just once in his past five starts away from Turner Field. Atlanta has done a solid job of rebounding following a poor pitching effort, compiling a 6-2 record the past eight games after allowing at least six runs.

Cardinals at Padres – 10:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
STL: Kelly (2-1, 3.90 ERA)
SD: Hahn (6-2, 2.12 ERA)

Series recap: The Padres put up just three runs, but that was enough to knock off the Cardinals, 3-1 on Tuesday night as -115 home favorites. San Diego improved to 8-3 in its past 11 games at Petco Park, while moving to 5-2 in its previous seven home matchups with St. Louis since 2012.

What to watch for: Since losing his Major League debut to Pittsburgh, the Padres have won six of Hahn’s last seven starts, including consecutive road underdog triumphs over the Dodgers and Braves. Kelly struggled in his last outing against the Cubs by allowing five earned runs and eight hits in less than five innings of a 7-6 defeat. Last night’s loss dropped St. Louis to 5-6 on the road against NL West foes this season, while scoring two runs or less for the sixth time in this span.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts as I head home......

13) Tampa Bay can't trade David Price, can they? They're hot as hell, only 4.5 games out of a Wild Card slot- they'd be spitting on their fans if they trade him.

12) A 93-year old water main broke in Westwood, with six inches flooding Pauley Pavilion, UCLA's basketball arena, as water spurted uncontrolled for over three hours. Pauley Pavilion was renovated only two years ago.

11) Cincinnati Reds are 2-9 since All-Star Game; the wins were 1-0/3-0 games, so it is obvious that they really miss Joey Votto/Brandon Phillips.

10) Vin Scully announced last night that he will return next year for his 66th season broadcasting Dodger baseball- he started when Harry Truman was President.

9) San Francisco Giants were shut out four times in Ryan Vogelsong's last five starts; they're now three games behind the Dodgers and fading fast.

8) Rangers lost 12-11 at home, despite JP Arencibia hitting two HRs, knocking in seven runs. He is still hitting only .183 after his 4-5 night.

7) Mets wore camouflage jerseys Monday, bright orange jerseys last night; would be nice if they used as much creativity in trying to upgrade their roster.

6) It bears repeating that two teams bid on Yoenis Cespedes when he was a free agent after coming here from Cuba; the A's and Marlins,. and Miami's offer was 1/3 of Oakland's offer. What would Cespedes get on the open market now?

5) White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers was hitting .219 when he started wearing glasses; he's hitting .395 since he started wearing the spectacles.

4) Red Sox scratched Jon Lester from Wednesday's start, adding speculation he is getting traded. Brandon Workman takes his place in the Boston rotation.

3) Memo to Seattle Seahawk fans: 2005 Patriots are last defending champ to win an NFL playoff game.

2) You know its time to end your Las Vegas vacation when you lose a 16-inning baseball game and the winning pitcher is the other team's backup catcher. John Baker also scored the game-winning run, ending the 6:27 marathon.

1) If you've never gone on a vacation to Las Vegas, I highly recommend it; trust me on this. Lot more to do than gambling, you can do most anything here.
