MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: One Giant Series

The Giants hold a slim lead over the Dodgers atop a competitive NL West - and expanding that edge could be difficult as the Giants visit the NL East-leading Nationals in a three-game weekend series.

We break down all the betting notes you need to handicap this weekend's MLB series, including a huge National League showdown in Washington, D.C. between the Nationals and the San Francisco Giants.

One Giant Series

The San Francisco Giants hold a slim lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers atop a competitive National League West - and expanding that edge could be difficult as the Giants visit the NL East-leading Washington Nationals in a three-game weekend set. Both teams will have their aces at their disposal, with the Nationals sending Stephen Strasburg to the hill Saturday and San Francisco riding Madison Bumgarner in Sunday’s series finale. The teams split an entertaining four-game set at the end of July.

ALCS Rematch

Tensions will be high at Kauffman Stadium as the Toronto Blue Jays visit the defending World Series-champion Kansas City Royals in a rematch of the American League Championship Series. The three-game set will feature the Blue Jays debut of left-hander Francisco Liriano, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline. Liriano has had a dreadful season, and has been particularly wretched of late, losing seven of his last eight starts as the moneyline favorite.

Prospect Showcase

The Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays will both showcase their top pitching prospects this weekend at Tropicana Field. The Rays will send deceptive left-hander Blake Snell to the hill Saturday afternoon; Snell has pitched to the under in five of his last seven starts, and has allowed two or fewer runs in four straight outings. The Twins counter with Jose Berrios on Sunday; he’s 4-0-1 against the total in five major-league starts, thanks in large part to 20 earned runs against over 21 innings.

Hitting Notes

* The Minnesota Twins produced the second-most runs of any team in July - and they have outfielder Max Kepler to thank for that. Entering Thursday, Kepler has hit a whopping 13 home runs since July 1 - more than any player in baseball over that span - and has an OPS above 1.000 over that span.

* Houston, you have a problem. And it centers around the play of 3B Alex Bregman, who comes into Thursday hitting an abysmal 1-for-32 in his first taste of major-league action. The Astros have faltered in his eight games, going 2-6 SU despite being a favorite in seven of those contests.

Pitching Notes

* Thinking about betting on Chicago Cubs lefty Jon Lester to tame the Athletics in Oakland on Friday? Think again. While Lester has been a sensational play at home (6-2, 1.99 ERA), he has stumbled outside Wrigley Field (5-2, 4.03). The over is 8-2 in Lester’s 10 road starts.

* Houston fans will be clamoring to see what Joe Musgrove can do for an encore. The 23-year-old racked up eight strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in his major-league debut Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, and has earned himself the start Sunday against Yu Darvish and the Texas Rangers.

Totals Trend

Aaron Sanchez has made life miserable for opposing hitters, and he’s making things difficult for his Toronto Blue Jays, as well. They’re sending him to the bullpen shortly, but not before he takes the hill Saturday. Sanchez has pitched to the under in 15 of his 21 starts so far this season.

Friday's Weather Report

* There is a chance of some thunderstorms in D.C. for the opener of the series between the Nats and Giants. There will also be a 5-10 mph breeze blowing out to left field at Nationals Park. The total for this one is set at 8.5.

* There will be thunderstorms in the Pittsburgh area Friday night for the evening game between the Pirates and the visiting Cincinnati Reds. There will be a 25 percent chance of some wet stuff falling from the sky and a 5-10 mph wind blowing from right to left. The total is set at 8.0.

* Detroit will have a 40 percent chance of rain and some thunderstorms in the area as the Tigers welcome the New York Mets to town for a weekend of interleague action. There will also be a 10-15 mph wind blowing from right to left. The total is set at 7.5.

* There will be three cities with games Friday night that will be impacted by a system sweeping through the Midwest carrying with it a 40 percent chance of rain and some potential electricity in the air. Toronto at Kansas City (Total: 9.0), Atlanta at St. Louis (Total: 8.5), and Miami at Colorado (Total: 11.5) could all see weather delays and wet conditions.

Giants, Nats clash in D.C.
August 5, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (62-46) at WASHINGTON NATIONALS (64-44)

First pitch: Friday, 7:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Nationals -140, Giants +125 Total: 8.5 (Over -115)

Two of the National League’s best teams meet when the Nationals host the Giants on Friday night.

Both San Francisco and Washington are leading their divisions coming into this game, but things can change very quickly in this league.

The Dodgers are threatening in the NL West and the Giants know that they need to rattle off a few victories just to give themselves some breathing room.

The Nationals, meanwhile, can never feel safe, as they have a history of collapsing and the Mets and Marlins both have full intentions of making up ground in the next few weeks.

With that being said, this is a big Friday night matchup and both teams can use a win. It also happens to be a game that could potentially be a preview of the NLCS.

The starters in this game are set to be RHP Jeff Samardzija (9-7, 4.30 ERA, 99 K) for San Francisco and LHP Gio Gonzalez (6-9, 4.29 ERA, 115 K) for Washington. Both guys have had their fair share of poor outings on the year, but both are capable of pitching well on any given night.

Jeff Samardzija has struggled quite a bit recently, as he has now allowed four or more earned runs in each of his past three starts. He also has failed to pitch into the seventh inning in each of his past four starts and eight of his past 10.

The Giants gave him a huge deal in the offseason and are expecting him to be a lot better than he has been. Samardzija will need to work deeper into this game and it’s also crucial that he keeps his walks down.

He has walked two or more batters in six of the past nine games and that is not a very good number. He also faced this Nationals team in his most recent trip to the mound and will need to be better this time around.

Offensively, C Buster Posey, SS Brandon Crawford and OF Angel Pagan are the guys to watch out for in this one. The three of them are a combined 13-for-44 with two homers and five RBI against Gio Gonzalez in their careers and should be able to find some success against him on Friday.

Gio Gonzalez has had an up-and-down season, but he has really pitched well for Washington recently. Gonzalez has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his past five starts.

He also was excellent in his most recent start, allowing just one earned run in six innings of work against the Giants on Jul. 31. That is good news for Gonzalez, as he is facing that same team on Friday.

One thing Gonzalez can do better is avoiding walks. He has walked two or more batters in eight of the past nine games and would be doing himself a huge favor by throwing more strikes. This lineup should have no trouble providing Gonzalez with some run support.

Guys like 2B Daniel Murphy, C Wilson Ramos and OF Jayson Werth have all had a ton of success against Samardzija in their careers. They are a combined 17-for-48 with four homers and 12 RBI against him and should have no issues hitting him again on Friday.

LEADING OFF: Verlander-Syndergaard & King Felix-Lincecum
August 5, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

CY OLD VS. CY FUTURE?

Noah Syndergaard (9-5) starts for the New York Mets in a series opener, facing the Tigers for the first time and trying to end a four-start winless streak (0-2). Justin Verlander (11-6), the 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner, starts for the Tigers. Verlander was AL pitcher of the month in July, going 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA in four starts.

STREAKING BOTH WAYS

Jon Lester (11-4) starts for the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs, who carry a four-game winning streak into their series opener at Oakland. Dillon Overton (1-2) starts for the Athletics, who snapped a five-game skid Thursday night and are last in the AL West.

IF ONLY A FEW YEARS AGO

Felix Hernandez (5-4) starts for the Seattle Mariners against the visiting Los Angeles Angels and Tim Lincecum. King Felix, the 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner, is 6-3 with a 1.68 ERA in nine home starts against the Angels since the start of the 2013 season. He is 14-16 with a 3.32 ERA in 48 starts against the Angels. Lincecum, the 2008 and '09 NL Cy Young winner for San Francisco, has allowed 12 runs and 12 hits over 6 1/3 innings in his past two starts.

RED SOX-DODGERS

In a matchup MLB executives would love for the World Series, the Boston Red Sox open an interleague series at the Los Angeles Dodgers. All-Star knuckleballer Steven Wright (12-5), who starts for Boston, leads AL qualifiers in fewest homers allowed per nine innings at 0.52. Scott Kazmir (9-4) won a career-best seven straight decisions before losing to Arizona on July 30.

PATCHED UP CARPENTER

St. Louis is expected to activate leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter before Friday's series opener against Atlanta. The infielder has not played since July 6 because of a strained right oblique muscle.

ICHIRO UPDATE

Ichiro Suzuki is two hits shy of 3,000 heading into the Miami Marlins' series opener at Colorado.

Friday's Diamond Notes
August 5, 2016

Hottest team:
Cubs (4-0 last four, 7-1 last eight)
The best team in baseball is at again. Although the Cubs came out of the gate groggy and needed Aroldis Chapman to come fortify the bullpen rotation, all the pieces appear to be in pace to make a run at 100 wins. Currently, Chicago leads all of MLB with a record of 66-41, the only team among the 30 that can boast of a winning percentage of above .600. Three of their last four victories have been by a single run, so Joe Maddon and Co. are definitely getting used to excelling in tight games. The Cubs are in Oakland for a strange three-game series on the west coast before returning home for a nine-game homestand that they're hoping will help pull away the NL Central.

Coldest team:
Diamondbacks (0-4 last four, 5-17 last 22)
Although he's Arizona's top pitching prospect by a long shot, the verdict remains out on 24-year-old Braden Shipley, which makes this one interesting. Shipley dominated in L.A. his last time out, holding the Dodgers to only five hits over six scoreless innings. He'll be making his first home start and has the D'Backs (-130) as a decided favorite against the Brewers, who counter with inconsistent righty Chase Anderson.

Hottest pitcher: Justin Verlander (11-6, 3.54 ERA)
There's no denying Verlander's resurgence at this point. Despite dummies wanting to scapegoat supermodel girlfriend Kate Upton due to all the time he spent with her, Verlander righted his own ship, fixing his mechanics and coming up with the right variety in his repertoire to reinvent himself. He's won nine of his last 11 decisions, but will be facing a monster in interleague play, as we'll relay below.

Coldest pitcher:
Tim Lincecum (2-5, 8.49 ERA)
You would be hard-pressed to name anyone with tougher luck pitching-wise than the Angels, which explains the Lincecum reclamation project trotting back out there again. There's no question he can still bring it, but it's obvious he's lost most of his mental fortitude on the mound. Fade him while you can. Lincecum hasn't pitched longer than five innings in seven of his eight major-league starts tis season and has given up more than a single run every time out after a successful debut at Oakland. He has won one decision out of his last five and has surrendered a homer in every game this season besides that opener. Lincecum walked a season-high six batters in this last outing against Boston, which sets up Felix Hernandez and Seattle (-175) as a heavy favorite in his fourth start since coming off the disabled list following the All-Star break. He's 1-0 with two no-decisions since returning.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (20-2 last 22)
The Orioles' pitching has fallen in line. Credit whoever you want, be it manager Buck Showalter or veteran pitching coach Dave Wallace, guys are taking care of their responsibilities. Despite a 5-3 loss to the Rangers on Thursday, Baltimore continues an excellent run on the mound since guys are stepping up and the bullpen has been lights out. As things stand entering Friday, the Orioles hold first place in the AL East by percentage points.

Biggest OVER run:
Twins (6-0 last six, 34-16-4 last 54)
The Twins have gone through multiple runs where they’ve gone cold, but over the last few months, they’ve been by far the most dependable ‘over’ team going. Part of it is an improved and attack, while a brutal bullpen could be to blame for what has transpired the rest of the time. Despite its offensive resurgence, Minnesota owns the worst record in the American League. They’re terrible anyway you slice it beyond engaging in slugfests. This matchup between them and Tampa Bay puts together two of the league's worst teams as they seek to properly finish out the string while improving.

Matchup to watch:
Red Sox at Dodgers
These teams haven't played since 2013, so if nothing else, a lack of famiiarity makes this intriguing. Beyond all that, both teams are desperate, battling for wild cards in their respective leagues. Boston re-established control of the second AL wild card, but remains only one-half game ahead Detroit, which lost to the White Sox on Thursday. L.A. finally snapped its losing streak against surging Colorado, but remains two back in the NL West and just three up on Miami and St. Louis for the NL wild cards. With no definitive date set for Clayton Kershaw's return, the Dodgers have to capitalize on their opportunities at home. Talented veteran lefty Scott Kazmir will work against knuckle-baller Steven Wright in an excellent pitching matchup to get things started.

Betcha didn’t know:
Noah Syndergaard has already beaten Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta this season, taking the Cubs down 2-1 on July 19 in the pitcher's duel everyone expected. In his first meeting against a Cy Young Award winner, he took down three-time recipient Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers 2-1. He hasn't faced Tim Lincecum or Roy Halladay, once the ace of the team that drafted him with the 38th pick of the 2010 draft, Toronto. He's lost to Madison Bumgarner this season (May 1), but the Giants ace doesn't have a Cy Young Award. Jake Peavy does, but the Mets' Norse horse hasn't faced him in the majors. He's never gone head-to-head with R.A. Dickey, who he was traded for. That makes him perfect against Cy Young winners, which comes to mind since he faces Justin Verlander tonight. He beat Max Scherzer, who won a Cy Young with the Tigers in 2013, on May 17, taking down the Nationals 2-0 while striking out 10 over seven shutout innings. He's never faced CC Sabathia, Johan Santana, The only Cy Young recipient he's ever faced who beat him was Zack Grienke, who won 5-2 for the Dodgers in Game 2 of last year's NLDS after Chase Utley's historic slide took out Ruben Tejada. So, yes, you're reading right. Going into tonight, Syndergaard is perfect in the regular season against Cy Young winners, expanding his myth.

Biggest public favorite:
Blue Jays (-130) at Royals

Biggest public underdog:
Rangers (+160) at Astros

Biggest line move: Marlins (+115 to -110) at Rockies

Thursday's Sports In Brief
August 5, 2016

OLYMPICS

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) The IOC approved the entry of 271 Russian athletes for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, meaning 70 percent of the country's original team will compete after a doping scandal that has dominated the buildup to the games.

The IOC rule barring Russian athletes with prior doping sanctions from competing in the games was also rejected as ''unenforceable'' by a sports arbitration panel, a decision which could open the door to further appeals and more Russians being entered.

The International Olympic Committee announced the go-ahead for 271 Russian athletes about 24 hours before the opening ceremony of the games. Overall, more than 100 Russians have been excluded, including 67 in track and field.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -
One of the lead investigators into the Russian doping crisis accused the World Anti-Doping Agency of contributing to the chaos ahead of the Olympics by not pushing for a probe into the country's entire sports system at an earlier date.

Jack Robertson, the chief investigator for the probe of Russia's track team, told Pro Publica that WADA president Craig Reedie ''had to be literally pressured into every investigation.''

Reedie responded by telling The Associated Press that Robertson, who left WADA under pressure in January, is ''clearly a disaffected former employee.''

NBA

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A month after Kevin Durant bolted for Golden State, star guard Russell Westbrook signed a contract extension to stay in Oklahoma City.

The team confirmed Westbrook signed the extension. A person with direct knowledge of the terms said the two sides agreed on a new three-year deal worth $85.7 million. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team did not release terms.

After the announcement, the team feted Westbrook during an event that was part pep rally and part press conference.

NFL

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's power to freely punish Adrian Peterson has prevailed, two seasons after the Minnesota running back became embroiled in a child-abuse case that heightened the dispute over league discipline.

A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that an NFL arbitrator acted within his rights by upholding Goodell's six-game suspension of Peterson in 2014. That came under the personal conduct policy the league toughened up following a brutal act of caught-on-video domestic violence committed by Baltimore running back Ray Rice.

GOLF

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) - Jerry Kelly played off the emotion of what he considers a home crowd Thursday in the Travelers Championship, shooting a 6-under 64 for a share of the first-round lead with Vaughn Taylor and Andrew Loupe.

The 49-year-old Kelly, who played at the nearby University of Hartford, started his afternoon on the back nine at TPC River Highlands, sinking a 45-foot putt for eagle on his sixth hole of the day, the course's signature par-4 15th.

Taylor, the 40-year-old who won for the first time since 2005 at Pebble Beach this year, strung together five consecutive birdies starting on the 12th hole and shot a 30 on the back nine.

Loupe, who at 27 is looking for his first PGA Tour win, had seven birdies and a bogey on the day. He pulled into a tie for the lead after a 128-yard approach shot on 18 gave him a 2-foot birdie putt.

Jon Rahm, the 21-year-old Spaniard who turned pro in June, eagled the par-5 13th hole and was a stroke back along with Ben Martin and Marc Leishman.NBA

NORTH BERWICK, Scotland (AP) -
Englishmen Chris Wood and Matt Fitzpatrick won their first-round matches in the Paul Lawrie Match Play as they look to lock up their first Europe's Ryder Cup spots.

Wood beat Australia's Brett Rumford 4 and 3, and Fitzpatrick raced to a 6-up lead after nine holes before closing out Denmark's Thomas Bjorn 4 and 3.

Wood is the top-seeded player at Archerfield and, like Fitzpatrick, currently occupies a spot on the European team for the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine next month in Minnesota. Tournament host Paul Lawrie also advanced to the last 32, beating Denmark's Lucas Bjerregaard 4 and 2.

U.S. WOMEN'S AMATEUR

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. (AP) - South Korea's Eun Jeong Seong and Italy's Virginia Elena Carta each won two matches in the U.S. Women's Amateur to keep alive their bids for rare season sweeps.

The 16-year-old Seong is trying to become the first player to win the event and U.S. Girls' Junior in the same season, and the 19-year-old Carta is attempting to become the second player to win the tournament and NCAA individual title in the same year.

Seong beat Thailand's Chakansim (Fai) Khamborn 5 and 4 in the morning in the round of 32 at Rolling Green, and topped fellow South Korean player Hye-Jin Choi 6 and 5 in the afternoon round of 16.

AUTO RACING

DENVER (AP) - Martin Truex Jr. has signed a two-year contract extension with Furniture Row Racing, keeping him with his NASCAR team through the 2018 season.

The Denver-based operation also announced that Bass Pro Shops and Tracker Boats will increase their primary sponsorship on the No. 78 Toyota from 12 to 16 races in 2017. The outdoorsman giants served as Truex's primary sponsors for his back-to-back Xfinity Series championships (2004-05) and the first three years of his Sprint Cup career (2006-08).

They were reunited this season.

TENNIS

ATLANTA (AP) - Second-seeded Nick Kyrgios of Australia advanced to the BB&T Atlanta Open quarterfinals, beating American Jared Donaldson 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a rain-interrupted match.

Kyrgios won an indoor event in Marseille, France, in February for his lone tour title. He will face fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain, a 6-1, 6-3 winner over France's Julien Benneteau.

Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka and Argentina's Horacio Zeballos set up a quarterfinal in the day session.

NEW YORK (AP) Starlin Castro hit a third-inning grand slam off Josh Tomlin that gave the Yankees a six-run lead, Mark Teixeira got two hits after tearfully announcing this will be his final big league season and New York beat the Cleveland Indians 13-7 on Friday night.

Jacoby Ellsbury had a four-hit game, and Michael Pineda (6-10) won for the third time in four outings following a six-start winless streak, allowing four runs and six hits in six-plus innings.

New York's Gary Sanchez made his first league start behind the plate and threw out Jason Kipnis and Mike Napoli trying to steal second base in the first two innings. The rookie, called up from the minors on Wednesday, doubled in the fifth for his first big league RBI and walked with the bases loaded in the sixth.

The Yankees had 16 hits, including at least one by every starter, and the Indians failed to retire New York in order in any inning. Cleveland lost for the fourth time in five games, and its AL Central lead over second-place Detroit was cut to two games

Slowed by injuries, Teixeira said he will retire after this season at age 36. He doubled in the first inning and legged out a single in the third on a ball stopped by Kipnis, the second baseman, in short right field. At .202, Teixeira's average reached .200 for the first time since before play on May 20.

Tomlin (11-4) allowed a season-high seven earned runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings and is 3-3 in 10 outings since an 8-1 start.

CUBS 7, ATHLETICS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jorge Soler hit a three-run home run in his first at-bat following a two-month absence, Jon Lester pitched seven innings, and Chicago beat Oakland.

Dexter Fowler also homered, and Javier Baez added a two-run double to help Chicago win its fifth straight. The Cubs also improved to a major league-best 67-41.

Lester pitched for the A's over the final two months of the 2014 season. He returned to the Coliseum for the first time since then and faced a distinctly different Oakland team than the one he left.

Lester (12-4) had eight strikeouts, allowed two runs and nine hits while winning for the third time in his last four starts. Dillon Overton (1-3) gave up seven runs in three innings.

NATIONALS 5, GIANTS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Gio Gonzalez pitched seven innings of two-hit ball, Trea Turner and Wilson Ramos homered and Washington beat San Francisco in a matchup of first-place teams.

Washington jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Jeff Samardzija (9-8), and Gonzalez made it stand up. Coming off a 3-1 loss in San Francisco on Sunday, Gonzalez (7-9) struck out seven, walked one and had five three-up, three-down innings. The two hits he allowed were a solo homer by Angel Pagan in the fourth and a single by Denard Span in the sixth.

Sammy Solis gave up two hits in the eighth and Mark Melancon got three straight outs to complete the four-hitter. It was the fourth straight win for the NL East-leading Nationals.

The Giants remained atop the NL West, though their lead is dwindling. Since the All-Star break, San Francisco is 5-14 and has allowed 32 home runs. Samardzija gave up five runs in seven innings and is 0-3 with a 6.85 ERA in his four starts since the break.

RED SOX 9, DODGERS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Knuckleballer Steven Wright threw a three-hitter, Mookie Betts had one of Boston's three homers and the Red Sox routed Los Angeles with David Ortiz out of the lineup in an NL park.

Wright (13-5) had nine strikeouts in his third complete game this season. He retired 15 in a row and won his fifth straight decision.

Sandy Leon hit a two-run homer in the fourth and had four RBIs. Travis Shaw also homered, connecting for the 14th time this season.

Dodgers starter Scott Kazmir (9-5) has lost two straight since a 13-start unbeaten streak. He allowed four runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Ortiz is expected back in the lineup Saturday, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell. He'll play first base.

TIGERS 4, METS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Victor Martinez homered and Detroit ace Justin Verlander limited New York to four hits in six innings to help the Tigers to their ninth victory in their last 10 games.

Verlander (12-6) allowed only two runs and struck out nine, but the Mets ran his pitch count up to 103 to force him out of the game. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

James Loney drove in a ninth-inning run with a groundout, and Rodriguez retired Kelly Johnson to end the game. Johnson homered in the fourth for the Mets. They have lost four straight.

Noah Syndergaard (9-6) also ran into pitch-count trouble, needing 112 to get through his six innings.

CARDINALS 1, BRAVES 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jaime Garcia pitched eight scoreless innings and had an RBI single to lead St. Louis past Atlanta.

Garcia (8-8) struck out 11 to top the 100-strikeout mark for the third time in his career.

He pitched out of a two-on, no-out jam in the fourth, striking out Freddie Freeman and Matt Kemp before getting Adonis Garcia to ground out. Freeman and Kemp, third and fourth in the Braves' lineup, were a combined 0 for 6 against Garcia with five strikeouts.

Garcia's two-out single in the second drove in Matt Holliday.

Seung Hwan Oh got the last three outs for his ninth save. Joel De La Cruz (0-4) was the loser.

ORIOLES 7, WHITE SOX 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Pedro Alvarez hit two solo shots to extend his homer streak and Baltimore had 16 hits to overpower Chicago and keep pace with Toronto for first place in the AL East.

Yovani Gallardo (4-3) pitched six innings of two-run ball for his first victory since June 29. Zach Britton struck out three in the ninth for his 34th save in 34 chances.

Jose Abreu homered for Chicago. Miguel Gonzalez (2-6) was the loser.

BLUE JAYS 4, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Devon Travis hit his second homer of the game in the ninth inning to lift Toronto past Kansas City.

Travis led off the game with a home run, then ripped a 1-2 pitch from Kelvin Herrera (1-3) into the Royals' bullpen for his first career multihomer game.

Brett Cecil (1-6) pitched the eighth for the victory, and Joaquin Benoit worked the ninth for his first save since Sept. 3 while with San Diego.

Francisco Liriano made his first start for Toronto after being acquired Monday from Pittsburgh. He allowed three runs, seven hits and two walks.

Paulo Orlando homered for Kansas City.

TWINS 6, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Eddie Rosario had a pinch-hit two-run homer in the seventh inning, Miguel Sano homered and had three hits and Minnesota beat Tampa Bay.

Brad Miller's solo homer off starter Ervin Santana gave the Rays a 2-1 lead in the sixth. It was the fifth homer in seven games for Miller and his 20th of the season. Santana (5-9) struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings.

MARLINS 5, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Martin Prado hit a go-ahead, two-run single during a four-run rally in the ninth inning that sent Miami over Colorado in a matchup of NL wild-card contenders.

After a throwing error by second baseman Dee Gordon helped the Rockies score three times in the eighth, the Marlins bounced back. Miami ended a three-game skid and stayed even with St. Louis for the second wild-card spot, with Colorado falling four games behind.

Marlins pinch-hitter Ichiro Suzuki struck out on three pitches and remains two hits away from 3,000. He is in an 0-for-11 slump.

The first three Marlins reached base in the ninth as Adeiny Hechavarria's RBI single cut the lead to 3-2 off closer Carlos Estevez (2-6). Prado singled with the bases loaded and Christian Yelich added a sacrifice fly. Brian Ellington (2-1) finished the eighth, and A.J. Ramos got his 32nd save.

MARINERS 6, ANGELS 4

SEATTLE (AP) - Mike Zunino capped Seattle's six-run first inning with a three-run home run off Tim Lincecum, and the Mariners held off Los Angeles.

Seattle overcame a rough first from starter Felix Hernandez and rallied with its largest first-inning output since scoring seven runs on May 15, 2013, against the New York Yankees. Seattle sent up 10 batters and had seven hits against Lincecum (2-6), capped by Zunino's sixth homer of the season.

Hernandez (6-4) settled down after giving up a three-run shot to Mike Trout in the first. He retired 12 of the next 13 after Trout's 20th homer and picked up his second win since coming off the disabled list. Rookie Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth for his third save in three chances.

ASTROS 5, RANGERS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Dallas Keuchel threw a three-hitter and Houston beat Texas for just the second time in 11 tries this season.

It was Rodriguez's second career game-ending homer and his 11th home run of the season.

Saturday’s 6-pack

— I wish I was clever enough to make this up: a kayak in the Olympics capsized after hitting a submerged sofa that was hidden underwater.

— Cardinals went 14-10 while Matt Carpenter was on DL; they used six leadoff hitters in those 24 games.

— NFL Network will show all 65 preseason games (11 live) starting next week.

— Houston 5, Texas 0– Rangers are now 9-2 vs Houston this year, still lead Astros by 5.5 games in AL West.

— Catcher in Indians’ farm system (Class A level) has a 47-game hitting streak going.

— If you bet over in Angels-Mariners last nite, you won before the first inning ended– it was 6-3 Seattle after the first inning.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer Saturday

13) USC plays Alabama in three weeks, in a rare Pac-12-SEC football matchup. Over the last five years, SEC teams are 5-1 vs Pac-12 squads; 3-1 vs spread when favored, 1-1 when an underdog. Only loss was Tennessee’s 59-14 beatdown at Oregon three years ago.

12) NFL coaches with best spread records in preseason games; Gary Kubiak 22-11-3, Pete Carroll 24-14-3, Mike Zimmer 7-2.

11) NFL coaches with worst spread records in preseason games: Jason Garrett 6-15, Chuck Pagano 6-9-1, Hue Jackson 0-4.

10) In the CFL, if a ball is fumbled out of bounds, the team that touched the ball last gets it; no possession is needed. What genius came up with that rule?

9) For third year in row, there were seven head coaching changes in the NFL; last two years, spread records of those first-year coaches: 100-114-7 (46.7%).

8) There were 27 coaching changes in college ball this year, compared to 18-15 the last two years. Spread records of those first-year head coaches: 201-209, 49.0%

7) Went to Canton, OH for Hall of Fame inductions in 2001, when Jackie Slater/Jack Youngblood were inducted; it is way expensive to get inductees’ autographs, though it is easy to get other players’ autographs or just meet them.

This year, an Orlando Pace signed ball is $75; other inductees are $99, except for Brett Favre’s ($299). Football with all the autographs goes for $499.

6) American Olympic hoop team obviously has 12 NBA guys on it; team with the next-most NBA guys? Spain, with seven.

5) Dodgers have had 25 guys on the DL this year; one short of the 2012 Red Sox for the most ever.

4) 13 NFL teams have starting QBs with 100+ career starts; most experienced backup is Atlanta’s Matt Schaub, who has 92 starts. Brock Osweiler (7 starts) is least experienced starter, unless Jared Goff wins the Rams’ #1 job.

3) Carson Palmer gets a one-year contract extension from the Cardinals, with all money this year/next guaranteed. Larry Fitzgerald also got an extension from Arizona.

2) Angels traded Hector Santiago to Minnesota at the deadline for Ricky Nolasco; other than Nolasco being thrilled to be going back to SoCal, not sure how this trade helps/hurts either team. They’re the same pitcher, very average. One righty, one lefty.

1) Congrats to former Rams Orlando Pace/Kevin Greene on being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame tonite. An honor very well-deserved.

LEADING OFF: Struggling Arrieta, Strasburg's sweet 16?
August 6, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

SUPER STEPHEN

Washington ace Stephen Strasburg goes for his major league-leading 16th win, starting at home against the Giants in a matchup of NL division leaders. Strasburg (15-1, 2.63) could set a career high for wins with a victory.

JAKE'S JAM

Jake Arrieta is 0-3 in his last five starts for the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs. The Cy Young Award winner (12-5, 2.75 ERA) tries to get back into the victory column when he starts at Oakland.

NEWCOMER NOVA

Ivan Nova makes his Pittsburgh debut, starting at PNC Park against Cincinnati. The right-hander was 7-6 with a 4.90 ERA for the New York Yankees when they sent him to the Pirates before Monday's trade deadline for two players to be named.

STILL STARTING

Aaron Sanchez (11-1, 2.71) starts for Toronto against Kansas City after his role with the team was publicly debated this week. General manager Ross Atkins said Monday that the Blue Jays were moving the All-Star righty to the bullpen to limit his innings. That move was met by criticism from the fan base, and Toronto then changed course, announcing a six-man rotation that keeps the 24-year-old starting but still limits his workload.

MAJOR STREAK IN MINOR LEAGUES

Indians prospect Francisco Mejia has the longest hitting streak in the minor leagues in 62 years, and he'll try to stretch his run to 48 games when Class A Lynchburg faces Salem. The 20-year-old catcher is still well short of Joe Wilhoit's record 69-game streak set with Wichita in 1919. Joe DiMaggio was Wilhoit's closest challenger when he hit safely in 61 straight games in 1933, and Roman Mejias has the third longest streak at 55 games, set with Waco in 1954.

ICHIRO UPDATE

Ichiro Suzuki struck out on three pitches in his only at-bat Friday and remains two hits away from 3,000. He is in an 0-for-11 slump, and manager Don Mattingly said there was no concrete decision on when the outfielder would be back in the lineup.
