Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

— For the first time since 2000, you can bet on the Olympics in Las Vegas, which gets the ticket windows open early.

— Minnesota Vikings open their new domed stadium this year.

— Home team lost the last six Cowboy-Eagle games.

— Tampa Bay Rays lost their last 12 games where winning run scored after the sixth inning- they’re 10-23 for the year.

— Twins 13, Indians 5– Minnesota scored 35 runs in beating Tribe the last three nights.

— Buccaneers hired Dirk Koetter as head coach because he worked well with Jameis Winston, which means Illinois got its new head coach (Lovie Smith) for the same reason, seeing as the Bucs fired Smith so they could promote Koetter.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

13) Most interesting part of NFL preseason games this summer will be how the Patriots play their QBs; Jimmy Garoppolo needs experience, but if he were to get hurt, New England is screwed for a QB for their first four games, with Brady suspended.

Brady won’t play until Week 5; does he need work this summer to be sharp when he comes back? Very unusual situation.

12) New defensive coordinator for Tampa Bay is Mike Smith, who coached the Falcons from 2008-14. Schedule makers had their fun by putting Bucs in Atlanta in Week 1.

11) Jerry Goff, father of Rams’ rookie QB Jared Goff, was a backup catcher in the major leagues- he hit 7 HRs in the big leagues, one of which was against Mike Harkey, whose son Cory is the Rams’ tight end. The elder Goff was 1-4 wth a walk in his career against Harkey.

10) Rams-49ers Monday night game is interesting, seeing as neither side has announced their starting QB. I’m guessing Kaepernick will be the Niners’ QB, I’m hoping Case Keenum starts for the Rams– want them to break the rookie in slowly.

9) Former Seahawks’ RB Michael Robinson, now on NFL Network, predicts Jacksonville will win the AFC South.

8) Tim Mickelson (Phil’s brother) quit as Arizona State’s golf coach to become manager for pro golfer Jon Rahm, who played for him at ASU.

7) Nike is out of the golf equipment business, but will stay on the footwear/apparel side of things. Nike’s golf sales were down 8% LY, so they jumped ship.

6) Someone told Matt Kuchar yesterday that the Olympic golf tournament is an individual event, not a team event; he didn’t know. The Olympics are next week; how could he not know that?

5) A 9-year old kid in Maryland is the recipient of the first double hand transplant; he threw out the first ball at the Orioles game Monday night. Science is an amazing thing.

4) Royals’ pitcher Danny Duffy had an outstanding game Monday, striking out 16 Rays in the Trop. Duffy induced 35 misses on only 60 swings, the most misses induced by any pitcher in a game this season.

3) Thoughts/prayers go out to Rams’ RB Tre Mason, who is having personal problems and hasn’t contacted the team since last season ended. Technically he is still on the roster but he has bigger issues than football right now.

2) Would be an interesting reality show for MLB to imbed a camera crew with a big league team for a season, especially around the trade deadline, so we can see the inner workings of how teams make trades and decide when to promote their best prospects. It would be good television.

1– Odd story out of New England, where the Red Sox traded two prospects for reliever Brad Ziegler on July 9. One of the prospects is Luis Basabe, who was hitting .310 in A ball; he has a twin brother who is still in the Red Sox organization. There are rumors going around that Arizona screwed things up and traded for the wrong brother, they really wanted the other brother, who is said to be more talented. Stay tuned on that one.

LEADING OFF: O's try to sweep Texas; Tigers seek 9th in row
August 4, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

BEST OF THE BEST

Baltimore goes for a three-game sweep of visiting Texas in a series between first-place teams. The AL East-leading Orioles are 39-16 at home, the top mark in the majors. Left-hander Wade Miley (7-8, 4.98 ERA) makes his Baltimore debut after he was obtained Sunday in a trade with Seattle. A.J. Griffin (4-1, 3.99) faces the Orioles for the first time since 2013. AL West-leading Texas is 9-4 in his 13 starts.

GETTING HEALTHY

Jordan Zimmermann (9-4) comes off the disabled list from a neck injury to pitch against the White Sox as host Detroit seeks its ninth straight victory. And teammate J.D. Martinez is expected to make his first start since missing seven weeks with a broken elbow. Martinez returned with a bang Wednesday night in a 2-1 win, breaking an eighth-inning tie with a pinch-hit homer off Chris Sale on the first pitch the slugger had faced since mid-June. Martinez's timely drive helped the streaking Tigers move within two games of first-place Cleveland in the AL Central.

HELP WANTED

Mike Napoli has homered in five straight games for Cleveland, matching Chris Davis and Jay Bruce for the longest streak in the majors this season. But the Indians have been wasting Napoli's power surge lately, losing three consecutive home games to Minnesota while getting outscored 35-16. The last-place Twins are 8-4 against the AL Central leaders this year and will go for a four-game sweep when left-hander Hector Santiago, acquired from the Angels at the trade deadline, makes his Minnesota debut in the series finale. Mike Clevinger will be called up from Triple-A Columbus to start for Cleveland.

NEW GIANT

Left-hander Matt Moore makes his first start for the San Francisco Giants in Philadelphia. The skidding NL West leaders acquired Moore from Tampa Bay for infielder Matt Duffy and two minor leaguers to help get back on track. Moore's arrival has bumped veteran right-hander Jake Peavy to the bullpen.

NOTHING FREE

Cardinals pitcher Mike Leake (8-8) has a streak on the line when he faces his former Reds team for the second time. Leake hasn't walked a batter in his last 30 innings spanning five starts, a career best. It's the longest active streak in the majors and the second-longest this season behind Matt Shoemaker's 30 1/3 innings without a walk for the Angels.

ICHIRO UPDATE

Ichiro Suzuki lined out softly to shortstop as a pinch-hitter Wednesday during Miami's loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. He remained two hits shy of 3,000. Suzuki and the Marlins are off Thursday before opening a three-game series at Colorado on Friday night.

Hottest team: Rockies (11-2 last 13)

Even though Detroit currently owns the longest winning streak in baseball at eight, Colorado is showcased here for its tear since the All-Star break. Yes, the Rockies captured six of seven games from the last-place Braves in this stretch, but road series victories over the Orioles and Mets, while trying to finish off a home sweep of the Dodgers isn’t too shabby. In its first two wins over Los Angeles, Colorado has scored 19 runs, while the Rockies are riding a six-game winning streak at Coors Field. Tyler Chatwood seeks his 11th victory of the season for Colorado tonight, as the right-hander has allowed a total of one earned run in his past two wins.

Coldest team: Mets (3-7 last 10)

The Subway Series concludes tonight in the Bronx as the Mets go for the series split with the Yankees. The Mets have allowed 15 runs in two losses to the Yankees, including nine in Wednesday’s defeat. Top hitter Yoenis Cespedes was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday, another blow for this Mets’ offense that has scored two runs or less four times in the past 10 games. Bartolo Colon takes the mound for the Mets this evening, as the veteran has given up at least five earned runs in three of his last five outings, while facing the Yankees for the first time since 2014.

Hottest pitcher: J.A. Happ, Blue Jays (14-3, 3.16 ERA)

Toronto has won nine consecutive starts made by the southpaw, while Happ yielded only five earned runs in five July starts. Happ is fresh off a pair of home victories over the Mariners and Orioles in which he gave up only four hits and one earned run in 13 innings of work to improve to 9-1 at the Rogers Center this season. Toronto has won 10 straight outings from Happ in the favorite role, as he is short chalk tonight in the finale at Houston. The Blue Jays have two of the first three games from the Astros, while Houston has scored only six runs in the last five contests.

Coldest pitcher: Drew Pomeranz, Red Sox (8-9, 3.09 ERA)

San Diego had a major fire sale this season, dumping many players from a team that was thought to compete for a playoff berth. Pomeranz was brought to Boston in July to help out the Red Sox pitching staff in the competitive AL East, but the Sox are just 1-2 in his first three outings. The left-hander has given up 12 earned runs in 14.1 innings of work, while not lasting past the sixth inning in any of his three outings with Boston. This season with the Padres and Red Sox, those teams are 4-6 in his 10 road starts as Boston looks for a series split with Seattle tonight.

Biggest UNDER run: Royals (5-2 last seven)

Kansas City received a pair of solid pitching performances in each of the first two victories at Tampa Bay before getting shelled in Wednesday’s 12-0 defeat. The Royals’ offense has been dreadful on this road trip by scoring three runs or less in all seven contests, while posting a 2-5 record. Dating back to July 3, the defending champions have plated three runs or fewer in 13 of the past 14 road contests, resulting in a 9-5 mark to the UNDER. Ian Kennedy heads to the hill for Kansas City today, as the Royals have drilled five straight UNDERS in his previous five road starts.

Biggest OVER run: Cardinals (6-0-1 last seven)

St. Louis snapped a three-game losing streak in Wednesday’s 5-4 victory over Cincinnati, but many OVER players were not happy. The game pushed on 9, but the Cardinals scored four runs in the first inning, while the Reds put up two in the bottom of that frame. The two NL Central rivals combined for three runs the rest of the game, halting the Cardinals’ six-game OVER streak. In five of seven games during this stretch, St. Louis has crossed home plate at least five times, while hitting the OVER in six of the past seven road series finales. Former Red Mike Leake takes the mound in today’s matinee, as the right-hander has been torched of late by allowing 19 hits and 13 runs in his last two starts, resulting in two OVERS.

Matchup to watch: Rangers vs. Orioles

Baltimore continues its home domination this season after edging Texas on Wednesday, 3-2. The Orioles go for the sweep tonight after beating Yu Darvish and Cole Hamels the last two nights to improve to 39-16 on home. Wade Miley makes his Baltimore debut after spending the first four months with Seattle this season, as the southpaw is coming off a spectacular performance in a 4-1 victory over the Cubs as a +210 underdog in his past outing. However, Miley hasn’t had much luck against the Rangers this season, allowing 14 earned runs in three starts, with the Mariners going 1-2 in those games.

A.J. Griffin has given up at least one home run in each of his past seven starts, as the Rangers’ right-hander is coming off a home victory over the Royals in his last outing. Texas has been swept three times on the road this season, while dropping four of its past six road series finales. Baltimore has pulled off five home sweeps, while owning a 5-1 record at home when going for the sweep this season.

Betcha didn’t know: The Braves have been terrible at home this season, but there is a telling number about them following a victory at Turner Field. Atlanta has dropped seven straight games off a home win since June 23, coming off Wednesday’s comeback victory over Pittsburgh. In this span, the Braves have won back-to-back games only twice with both instances coming as heavy underdogs on the road.

Biggest public favorite:
Red Sox (-140) at Mariners

Biggest public underdog: Rangers (+115) at Orioles

Biggest line move: Angels (-130 to -140) vs. Athletics

NEW YORK (AP) Jay Bruce launched a three-run homer for his first hit since being traded, Bartolo Colon took a shutout into the seventh inning and the New York Mets beat the Yankees 4-1 on Thursday night for a split of the Subway Series.

After each team won once at Citi Field earlier this week, the Mets took the wrapup of the two-game set at Yankee Stadium.

Bruce had been 0 for 10 since being acquired from Cincinnati on Monday before his drive into the Yankees' bullpen in right-center field made it 4-0 in the fifth inning against Nathan Eovaldi (9-8).

Kelly Johnson also led off with a homer in the inning.

Bruce's 26th homer gave him the NL RBIs lead with 83, ended an 0-for-19 rut overall and made him 5-for-56 against the Yankees. He cracked a smile on the way back to the dugout, where Colon and his new teammates greeted him with hearty high-fives.

Colon (10-6) gave up six hits in 6 2/3 innings in earning his 228th victory, most among active pitchers. The 43-year-old righty, who spent 2011 with the Yankees, became the first pitcher to win a Subway Series game for each New York team, the Elias Sports Bureau said.

Jeurys Familia worked around a pair of one-out singles for his 38th save in 40 chances.

GIANTS 3, PHILLIES 2, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Denard Span homered leading off the 10th inning, and San Francisco Philadelphia Phillies for just its fifth victory in 14 games since the All-Star break.

Matt Moore made his first start for the NL West leader following his acquisition Monday from Tampa Bay. He allowed two runs and three hits in six innings and walked six - matching his career high.

Span led off the 10th by sending a 95 mph fastball from Severino Gonzalez (0-2) just inside the right-field foul pole, his third hit of the game. San Francisco lost the first two games of the series.

Sergio Romo (1-0) earned the win without getting an out. Cesar Hernandez was caught stealing for the final out of the ninth while Romo was facing his first batter.

Romo became the first pitcher to record a win without officially facing a batter since 2009 when Alan Embree accomplished the feat for Colorado against Washington.

Santiago Casilla pitched a 1-2-3 10th for his 25th save in 30 chances.

DODGERS 4, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Kenta Maeda allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings, rookie Corey Seager tied a Dodgers record for shortstops with his 19th home run and Los Angeles beat Colorado to avoid a three-game sweep.

Maeda (10-7) gave up four hits and struck out five for the Dodgers, who lead the NL wild-card race. Maeda, who walked none and hit two batters, has allowed three runs in 18 2/3 innings against the Rockies, with 22 strikeouts and two walks.

Pedro Baez and Joe Blanton combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings, and Kenley Jansen threw a hitless ninth for his 32nd save in 37 chances.

Tyler Chatwood (10-7) allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings for Colorado. David Dahl hit a two-run homer in the fourth and has hit safely in his first 10 games in the majors.

RED SOX 3, MARINERS 2, 11 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) - Brock Holt's RBI single in the 11th inning lifted Boston past Seattle.

Travis Shaw, who had a solo homer in the second, opened the 11th against Cody Martin (1-2) with an opposite-field single to left against the shift. Sandy Leon sacrificed Shaw to second and Holt then bounced an single up the middle off the glove of diving shortstop Sean O'Malley.

Craig Kimbrel (2-3) retired all four batters he faced - including striking out the side in the 10th - for the victory. Brad Ziegler pitched the 11th for his third save, stranding the tying run at third.

RANGERS 5, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jonathan Lucroy hit his first homer with Texas, Ian Desmond drove in two runs and the Rangers beat Wade Miley and Baltimore to avoid a three-game sweep.

Texas received contributions from all three players it acquired before Monday's non-waiver trade deadline. Lucroy homered in the second inning, Carlos Beltran singled in a run in the fifth and Jeremy Jeffress pitched a scoreless seventh.

Shin-Soo Choo came off the disabled list to get two hits and scored a run for the Rangers, who took back from Baltimore the distinction of owning the best record in the AL.

Texas won the season series 4-3 and would have home-field advantage in the postseason if the teams finish with the same regular-season record and meet in the playoffs.

Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 31st homer for the Orioles. Pedro Alvarez and Hyun-Soo Kim also hit solo shots. Miley (7-9) gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings in his debut with the Orioles. The left-hander was acquired from Seattle on Sunday.

REDS 7, CARDINALS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Brandon Phillips had three hits and left-hander Brandon Finnegan limited St. Louis to two hits in six innings, leading Cincinnati to a rare series win over the Cardinals.

Cincinnati took two of three, giving it its fifth series win in the last 23 between the NL Central clubs. The Reds have won six straight series after the All-Star break for the first time since 1999.

Phillips had a single and a pair of doubles, scored three times and drove in a run against former teammate Mike Leake (8-9). Ramon Cabrera drove in three runs, and Eugenio Suarez knocked in a pair.

Finnegan (7-8) allowed a pair of singles, and the bullpen gave up three more while closing out Cincinnati's fourth shutout.

INDIANS 9, TWINS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer, Francisco Lindor added a two-run shot and Cleveland salvaged the finale of a four-game series with Minnesota.

The AL Central-leading Indians were outscored 35-16 by the last-place Twins in the first three games. Cleveland is 5-8 against Minnesota and 26-8 against the rest of the division.

Santana homered in the third off Hector Santiago (10-5), who made his first start with the Twins since being acquired from the Angels on Monday. Lindor homered in a three-run seventh. Jason Kipins hit his career-high 18th homer, a solo shot in the first. Jose Ramirez had a solo homer in the eighth.

Dan Otero (3-1) was the winner. Brian Dozier homered for Minnesota.

WHITE SOX 6, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia homered in a five-run second inning, and Chicago chased Jordan Zimmermann in his return from the disabled list, snapping Detroit's eight-game winning streak.

Zimmermann (9-5) allowed six runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings, failing to strike out a batter in his first outing since June 30. He had been out with a right neck strain.

Jose Quintana (9-8) allowed three runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. David Robertson pitched the ninth for his 26th save in 30 chances. Chicago won for only the second time in eight games.

Miguel Cabrera and Ian Kinsler homered for Detroit. The Tigers fell three games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland.

ATHLETICS 8, ANGELS 6, 10 INNINGS

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Yonder Alonso hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the 10th inning and Oakland beat Los Angeles to avoid a three-game sweep and snap a five-game losing streak.

Mike Morin (2-2) got the first two outs of the 10th inning before the A's scored twice. Danny Valencia and Tyler Ladendorf singled, and Alonso's double to center scored Valencia with the go-ahead run. Marcus Semien followed with an RBI single. Ryan Dull pitched a scoreless 10th to get his second save.

Jefry Marte and Jett Bandy hit back-to-back singles off John Axford to start the eighth and pinch-hitter Mike Trout drew a walk to load the bases. Johnny Giavotella sent a grounder to first base that Alonso bobbled, allowing Giavotella to reach safely and Marte to beat the throw home and tie it at 6.

Ryan Madson (4-4) then came in for Axford and retired Yunel Escobar and Kole Calhoun.

BRAVES 5, PIRATES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Adonis Garcia scored from second on an improbable stolen base attempt in the seventh inning and Atlanta beat Pittsburgh despite Ryan Vogelsong's strong start.

Vogelsong allowed only one run in six innings his first start in more than two months. He left with the game tied 1-1.

Felipe Rivero (0-4) walked Garcia with one out in the seventh, and Garcia moved to second on Ender Inciarte's single. Garcia, who has only two steals this season, broke for third base as the left-handed Rivero held the ball on the mound. Rivero finally threw to third, but Jung Ho Kang dropped the throw for an error, allowing Garcia to score. Inciarte moved to second, and scored on Jeff Francoeur's pinch single.

Hunter Cervenka (1-0) was the winner, and Jim Johnson pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

BLUE JAYS 4, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - J.A. Happ won his ninth consecutive decision, Edwin Encarnacion reached 30 home runs for the fifth straight season and Toronto beat Houston for its eighth victory in 11 games.

Happ (15-3), who already has set his career high for wins, retired 12 of his first 13 batters and allowed one run and four hits in six innings. He's 9-0 with a 2.49 ERA in 10 starts since losing at Detroit on June 6. Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his 24th save.

Mike Fiers (7-5) was the loser.

RAYS 3, ROYALS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Brad Miller hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to help Tampa Bay beat Kansas City for a series split.

Miller hit his 19th homer, connecting off Joakim Soria (4-5).

Ian Kennedy gave up one hit, walked four and had nine strikeouts in six-plus innings for the Royals. Alex Gordon hit his eighth home run.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here

13) Russell Westbrook gets $86.5M for three years from the Thunder; Golden State’s first visit to Oklahoma City has to be a national TV game, right? Opening Night? Christmas?

12) Jimmer Fredette signed to play in China, meaning his debut as an ESPN NBA analyst is only a couple years away.

11) Dodgers put Clayton Kershaw on the 60-day DL, meaning he cannot come back until at least August 27 and explains why they dealt for Rich Hill.

10) Nick Foles signed with the Chiefs and his old coach Andy Reid instead of the Cowboys; Foles will back up Alex Smith in KC.

9) Texas Rangers are 23-8 in one-run games this year, 50-30 in two years under manager Jeff Banister.

8) Since 2003, NFL underdogs of 7.5+ points cover 55.9% of time in divisional games, 50.7% in non-divisional tilts.

7) Last six golf majors, Jason Day is -43, Henrik Stenson -33, Jordan Spieth -28, Brooks Koepka -23, Phil Mickelson -21.

6) Rookie mistake: Wednesday night, Giants-Phils were 4-4 in 12th inning. Philly had bases loaded, one out and Mikael Franco was up. He singled to CF, but the runner on first, rookie Aaron Altherr, never touched second and started celebrating. Giants threw ball in, touched 2B and it became a force play instead of a hit, costing Franco a basehit.
The run still counted and the game ended, but Phils’ coach Larry Bowa had a talk with the rookie about it after the game; it is not cool to cost your teammate a hit.

5) Tampa Bay Bucs’ offensive coordinator Todd Monken quit his job as head coach at Southern Miss to join the Bucs; he had resurrected the USM program, going 9-5 LY, after he inherited a dumpster fire. Most guys prefer being a head coach.

4) On August 4, 1982, Joel Youngblood played for two different teams in two cities in the same day; he went 1-2 for the Mets in Wrigley Field, was traded to the Expos after the game, flew to Philly and got a hit for Montreal that same night.

3) Yoenis Cespedes is on the DL with a quad injury now, as reports of his addiction to playing golf (even on game days) is making the rounds in the New York media. If you make $27M a year, I’m thinking you should save your energy for the games.

2) Jim Thome hit 13 walk-off homers in his career, the most ever. Six guys have 12; five Hall of Famers and Albert Pujols, a future Hall of Famer.

1) President Obama has commuted the sentences of 562 federal inmates while in office, more than the previous nine presidents combined. I have no opinion on this because I know so little about it, but it just seems odd.
