Week One Review: Sumlin makes the difference at Texas A&M

College football is mostly about two things. Quarterbacks. And the Southeastern Conference.

Nowhere did those two themes intersect better than in the first game of the season -- Texas A&M at South Carolina.

College football moved on from the Johnny Manziel era, leaving his every off-field move and on-field gesture as a concern for the NFL. But he still had the gravitational pull of a black hole in the offseason, pulling every question about Texas A&M into this singularity: How could the Aggies possibly replace Johnny Football and still be relevant?

It was the wrong question.

Give Manziel his due, but the immediate success of Texas A&M in the SEC had less to do with his improvisational skills and more to do with the man in charge of it all -- coach Kevin Sumlin. The question should have been: Have SEC foes figured out how to stop Sumlin?

Lesson No. 1 from the opening weekend of college football: Never doubt Sumlin's scheme.

He created a just-add-water Heisman candidate in sophomore Kenny Hill, who completed 44 of 60 passes for 511 yards, breaking the school single-game passing record of Johnny ... uh, what was that guy's name again?

Hill also threw for three touchdowns as he and the Aggies carved up the No. 9 Gamecocks 52-28.

Now, the opening weekend of the season always comes with a caveat -- avoid drawing too many conclusions based off one game. But the first impression screams that A&M's impressive performance wasn't a fluke.

Hill showed poise in the face of South Carolina's blitz. He is working behind an experienced offensive line, led by the team's next first-round left tackle -- Cedric Ogbuehi. Hill worked fast in the hurry-up offense and got the ball out quickly to an array of talented wideouts, including senior Malcome Kennedy and fab freshmen Ricky Seals-Jones and Speedy Noil. What we're saying is that the first-game numbers are sustainable.

Get used to the Aggies being back in the discussion in the wild SEC West and beyond. Their next four games are against Lamar, Rice, at SMU, and Arkansas. A&M should be 5-0 heading into an Oct. 4 game at Mississippi State, which is most definitely a team you don't want to sleep on.

Until then, just don't call the new quarterback Kenny Football. Perhaps Heis-Ken will do.

Five things we learned in week one

1. This is a corollary to the Kevin Sumlin clause: Never, ever, underestimate a Rich Rodriguez offense. He lost All-American running back Ka'Deem Carey and quarterback B.J. Denker, returning a Pac-12-low 23.6 percent of his offense. In Arizona's first game, a 58-13 win over UNLV, the Wildcats rolled up a school-record 787 total yards, 425 coming off the arm of redshirt freshman Anu Solomon. This Thursday's game at UTSA, which opened with a 27-7 win at Houston, could be better than you think.

2. Oklahoma State's defensive front is not good, it's great. Going against Florida State's best-in-the-nation offensive line, the Cowboys allowed just 106 rushing yards and had five tackles for loss, including two sacks from emerging sophomore star lineman Emmanuel Ogbah. After its close-call loss to No. 1 Florida State, young Oklahoma State has time to build before taking on a back-loaded schedule.

3. UCLA's 2014 potential problem is its 2013 Achilles' heel. Playing without two injured starters on the offensive line, the Bruins scored only one offensive touchdown in a 28-20 win at Virginia. The Cavs overwhelmed UCLA with their blitzes, coming up with 11 tackles for loss, including five sacks. Good news: UCLA might get back center Jake Brendel (knee) and left tackle Simon Goines (ankle) very soon. "I know that there is going to be a lot of concern about our offensive line, and it's warranted at this point," coach Jim Mora said. "Those of us that know we have a good group know that we just need to play better."

4. Senior quarterback Blake Sims got more than a courtesy start at Alabama. Everyone expected Florida State transfer Jacob Coker to win the job, but Sims' four years in the system trumped Coker's three months on campus. Sims was 24-for-33 for 250 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception, in a 33-23 win over West Virginia. It was a respectable effort that should earn encores in the next two games against weaklings Florida Atlantic and Southern Miss.

5. It's going to be a wild ride in 2014. OK, we already knew that. But when the two teams most favored to get to the first title game of the College Football Playoff era -- Florida State and Alabama -- each struggle in openers against unranked opponents ... it's a clear sign that crazy twists and turns, and breathtaking freefalls, await.

Five important returns

1. Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson. Returning from academic exile, Golson looked as good as the new FieldTurf in Notre Dame Stadium, passing for 295 yards and running for 41. He had two long on-the-mark touchdown passes that each traveled about 60 yards in the air. It's in the DNA of coach Brian Kelly to fling the ball all over the yard, and Golson's arm and experience give him a chance to get back to those roots.

2. Texas quarterback David Ash. Last season's concussion problems, followed by a spring foot injury, put Ash on the long road back. If the Longhorns are to have any success in coach Charlie Strong's debut, Ash has to stay healthy and be effective. He was sporadic in a 38-7 win over North Texas, completing 19 of 34 passes for 190 yards, and taking a couple of big hits that had Burnt Orange Nation holding its breath. Honorable mention: Texas linebacker Jordan Hicks, coming off an Achilles injury, made his first career interception. He is the glue guy of the defense.

3. Arizona receiver Austin Hill. The senior, who missed all of last season because of an ACL injury, came back in style with a 92-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown on the first play of the second half against UNLV. He stiff-armed a defender after the catch to gain the separation he needed to race in untouched the rest of the way. Hill leads one of the deepest groups of receivers in the country.

4. Maryland receivers Stefon Diggs/Deon Long. The Terps should have one of the best receiving corps in the conference -- that's now the Big Ten, remember -- led by Diggs and Long, who returned to the starting lineup in a rout of James Madison after rehabbing together from broken legs suffered at midseason last year. Diggs had five catches for 53 yards and returned a kickoff 59 yards. Long made two catches for 48 yards, including a 41-yard score.

5. Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. Fired as USC's head coach during last season, Kiffin was back on the sideline, calling plays under the watchful eye of Nick Saban. The Tide gained 538 yards against West Virginia, which is good, but Bama can do better. Alabama must stop embracing the "Dinosaur Age" of offense -- Saban's words -- and use more of the fast-paced, no-huddle attack that sparked the Tide late in the second half and helped get quarterback Blake Sims in rhythm.

Five players to watch

1. Georgia running back Todd Gurley. The junior had 198 yards rushing and a 100-yard kickoff return in a win over 12th-ranked Clemson. He'll end the two-year drought of no running back in the first round of the NFL Draft.

2. Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg. The sophomore threw for 454 yards and directed the game-winning drive that ended in a field goal in a 26-24 win over UCF in Dublin. Your No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft ...

3. Michigan receiver Devin Funchess. Now wearing Michigan's famed No. 1 jersey and no longer mis-labeled as a tight end, Funchess (6-5, 230) is still a matchup nightmare. He caught seven passes for 95 yards and three scores vs. Appalachian State.

4. BYU quarterback Taysom Hill. He ran for 1,344 yards last season, the question being whether he could improve his 53.9 completion percentage. Well, he was 28-for-36 in the opening win over UConn. This week: At Texas.

5. Oklahoma State all-purpose back Tyreek Hill. It took one game to make the junior college transfer the nation's most exhilarating player. The fastest man in college football posted 278 all-purpose yards, and his value as a decoy made the Cowboys' offense all the more unpredictable.

Five best Week 2 games

1. Michigan State at Oregon, Saturday, 6:30 p.m. ET., FOX. Thanks to its backfield depth, Oregon moved Byron Marshall to an all-purpose role in the opener, and he responded with 89 yards rushing and 138 yards on eight receptions over South Dakota. His versatility is worth watching against the Spartans' stout defense in a game with major College Football Playoff implications.

2. USC at Stanford, USC at Stanford, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC. Steve Sarkisian's new-to-USC up-tempo offense was an instant success, with the Trojans running a school-record 105 plays en route to 701 yards in a laugher against Fresno State. Stanford yawns. If the Cardinal can handle Oregon's attack, it won't be awed by USC's.

3. Michigan at Notre Dame, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET., NBC. A night game in South Bend wraps up this historic series until at least 2020 -- probably much longer, given the rhetoric on both sides. Enjoy while you can.

4. Virginia Tech at Ohio State, Saturday, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN. The Buckeyes could end up being just fine with redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett at quarterback, although his inexperience and shaky play from the offensive line led to conservative play-calling against Navy. A fast, physical Hokies defense, led by defensive tackle Luther Maddy, cornerback Kendall Fuller and safety Kyshoen Jarrett, will require more creativity from Urban Meyer.

5. East Carolina at South Carolina, Saturday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU. The Gamecocks have to show resiliency after the humbling loss to A&M, while the Pirates are looking for big-bowl legitimacy, fueled by the prolific pass-catch combo of Shane Carden and Justin Hardy.

Senior Analyst Rob Rang's five takeaways on how prospects performed in their season openers. Players listed chronologically by game time this week, including position, school, year (Height, weight and current NFLDraftScout.com overall rating and by position).

1. QB Jameis Winston, Florida State (6-4, 235, #6/#2)

Winston's stats in Saturday night's victory over Oklahoma State included two interceptions, but that doesn't tell the full story. Both picks were thrown into single coverage, with defenders making spectacular plays on the ball. While Winston did stare down his targets, he generally makes excellent decisions with the ball and did so throughout this game, peppering the Cowboys with well-thrown short and intermediate routes and driving strikes down the alleys. He showed good touch on traditional deep balls, including a pair of 50-plus-yard completions in the first half.

2. WR Kevin White, West Virginia (6-3, 209, #296/#36)

White matched Alabama's preseason All-American Amari Cooper catch for catch, showing impressive hand-eye coordination and leaping ability to haul in several contested throws. The 6-foot-3, 209 pound White possesses a legitimate NFL frame with broad shoulders and good overall musculature. White used his size to overpower defenders on occasion, breaking tackles to gain yardage after the catch. He also showed agility and strength to gain a free release, smooth acceleration to push corners deep and the burst out of his breaks to gain separation.

3. QB Brett Hundley, UCLA (6-3, 227, #19/#3))

Hundley was held without a touchdown pass against Virginia. He did score on a six-yard scamper and completed 20 of 33 passes for 242 yards and showed composure down the stretch, rifling deep passes to the sidelines. And when protected, Hundley generally threw the ball well. He showed improved poise in the pocket from a year ago, scanning the field and occasionally stepping up in the pocket before delivering confident passes. He failed to look off defenders, at times, which contributed to three of his passes being deflected at the line of scrimmage.

4. RB Paul James, Rutgers (6-0, 210, #16 RB in 2016)

James, a 6-foot, 210-pound junior, routinely ran through arm tackles in Rutgers' victory over Washington State in Seattle, showing impressive leg drive, forward lean and enough burst to gain yardage in chunks. He lowers his shoulders on contact and spins off hits, keeping his feet moving and eyes searching for daylight. He showed better acceleration than his frame would indicate, breaking free for a 56-yard gain.

5. LT Cedric Ogbuehi, Texas A&M (6-5, 300, #3/#1)

A boisterous crowd at South Carolina on Thursday seemed to contribute to Ogbuehi getting an occasional late start. Rather than panic and lunge at his opponent, Ogbuehi showed off his rare skill set, accelerating while turning his shoulders to remain square to the pass rusher before extending his vine-like arms to latch on. Ogbuehi's agility and reach make him reliable in pass protection. He also showed quickness and agility in the running game and drove his assignment off the ball to clear the lane for A&M's first touchdown of the season, a 1-yard plunge off left tackle by Tra Carson.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Arizona at Texas-San Antonio
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Wildcats at Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (+7, 56)

Arizona put on a dynamic offensive display in its season opener, but the Wildcats' second contest appears as if it will be anything but a cake walk. The Wildcats hit the road for the first time Thursday when they take on Texas-San Antonio, which is also coming off an impressive win in Week 1. Arizona rolled to a 58-13 victory over UNLV on Friday behind a school-record 787 yards of total offense, including 425 passing yards by Anu Solomon.

“Our guys competed well and kept their poise,” Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters. “It was a good win and we’ll learn from it. We will get a quick turnaround and get ready for the next one.” Arizona, which registered two 100-yard rushers and two 100-yard receivers Friday, is trying to start 2-0 for the sixth time in the last seven years. Meanwhile, UTSA's football program has only been in existence since 2011 but the Roadrunners are coming off one of the biggest wins in school history.

TV:
8 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1.

LINE HISTORY:
Oddsmakers opened the Wildcats at 7-point road favorites and the total at 56.

INJURY REPORT:
Arizona - DL Reggie Gilbert (questionable, foot). UTSA - T Josh Walker (questionable, undisclosed).

ABOUT ARIZONA (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U):
Solomon, a redshirt freshman, also ran for 50 yards last week as part of a 353-yard rushing attack for the Wildcats, who were led by Terris Jones-Grigsby (124 yards) and Nick Wilson (104). With Austin Hill (110 yards) and Samajie Grant (101) going over the century mark through the air, it marked the first time in school history that Arizona had two 100-yard rushers and a pair of 100-yard receivers in the same game. “We have the ability to be a good offense this year. We just need to carry the confidence like we do," said Hill, who had a 92-yard TD catch-and-run in his first game in 20 months following knee surgery.

ABOUT TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U):
The Roadrunners opened their season with a resounding 27-7 road victory against Houston, holding the Cougars scoreless until 1:04 remained. David Glasco II ran for a pair of touchdowns and the UTSA defense forced six turnovers, including four interceptions. One negative for the Roadrunners is they committed 14 penalties for 115 yards - a stat they surely will need to clean up if they are going to upset the Wildcats.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-0 in Roadrunners last five games overall.
* Wildcats are 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
* Roadrunners are 8-1 ATS in their last nine non-conference games.
* Over is 4-1 in Wildcats last five road games.

CONSENSUS:
According to Consensus, 78 percent of wagers are backing the Arizona Wildcats.

Friday's Tip Sheet

September 3, 2014

**Pittsburgh at Boston College**

-- As of early Wednesday, most books had Pittsburgh (1-0 straight up, 1-0 against the spread) installed as a four or 4.5-point road favorite for both school's ACC opener. The total was in the 49-50 range. Gamblers can take the Eagles on the money line for a +170 return (risk $100 to win $170).

-- Pitt cruised to a 62-0 win over Delaware as a 24-point home favorite in Saturday's opener. The Panthers, who won by the widest margin since 1913, produced 501 yards of total offense and limited the Fightin' Blue Hens to merely 57 total yards. They led 42-0 at intermission and coasted to the easy win. Sophomore RB James Conner was the catalyst with 153 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just 14 carries. Chad Voytik completed 10-of-13 passes for 84 yards and two TDs without an interception.

-- Pitt sophomore WR Tyler Boyd, a first-team Freshman All-American and a second-team All-ACC selection in 2013, suffered a finger injury in last week's opener. Boyd had two receptions for 18 yards and one TD against Delaware. He also had two carries for 17 yards and three punt returns for 72 yards before leaving the game early. Boyd has been upgraded to 'probable' this week after practicing Tuesday with some wrap on his hand. As a true freshman last season, Boyd had 85 receptions for 1,174 yards and seven TDs.

-- Boston College (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) captured a 30-7 win as a 17-point road favorite in last week's season opener at Massachusetts. Florida transfer Tyler Murphy was excellent in his BC debut, completing 17-of-24 throws for 173 yards with one TD and one interception. Murphy rushed 13 times for a team-high 118 yards and one TD, becoming the first BC quarterback to rush for more than 100 yards since Doug Flutie in 1984.

-- With RB Andre Williams taking his 2,177 rushing yards from 2013 to the NFL this year, the bulk of the carries will be split by Myles Willis and Tyler Rouse. Willis rushed for 57 yards and one TD on 16 carries, while Rouse finished with 19 totes for 87 yards.

-- Since 2004, BC owns a 10-6 spread record as a home underdog. The Eagles are 2-0 ATS as home 'dog on Steve Addazio's watch.

-- Pitt has been a road favorite five times during Paul Chryst's tenure, posting a 2-3 spread record.

-- These former Big East rivals haven't faced each other in a decade. They squared off every season from 1993 to 2004. Four of the last eight head-to-head meetings were decided by four points or fewer, with two of the last three contests going to overtime.

-- Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Washington State at Nevada**

-- As of Wednesday, most spots had Washington State (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) listed as a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 66. Bettors can take the Wolf Pack to win outright for a +155 payout (risk $100 to win $155).

-- Nevada (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) won a 28-19 decision over Southern Utah in its opener, but it failed to cover the number as a 24.5-point favorite. The Wolf Pack took a 28-6 advantage early in the fourth quarter and appeared as if it might hook up its supporters. However, the Thunderbirds answered with a TD drive and then got an 85-yard pick-six with 1:59 remaining to make the final score look more respectable.

-- Nevada senior QB Cody Fajardo was sharp against Southern Utah, connecting on 30-of-41 throws for 303 passing yards with one TD and one interception. Fajardo ran 15 times for 68 yards, including an 11-yard TD scamper. For his career, Fajardo has a 40/19 touchdown-to-interception ratio and 2,504 rushing yards.

-- Washington State is in a must-win situation here after dropping a 41-38 decision to Rutgers as a 7.5-point home favorite last Thursday (note that Nevada played Saturday, so Wazzu has had two extra days of preparation). After trailing 21-17 at intermission, the Cougars took a 31-24 lead going into the fourth quarter. They went ahead 38-34 with 8:13 remaining on a five-yard TD pass from Connor Halliday to Rickey Galvin. However, RU's Paul James scored on a three-yard TD run with 3:24 left and the Scarlet Knights held off Washington St.'s last-gasp effort to escape Pullman with the upset victory.

-- Halliday had a tremendous performance, completing 40-of-56 passes for 532 yards and five TDs compared to only one interception. But he got zero help from a ground attack that produced just six rushing yards on 14 attempts. Vince Mayle had a team-high 12 receptions for 124 yards and one TD, while Isiah Myer had six catches for 94 yards and a pair of TDs.

-- Nevada was a home underdog twice in Brian Polian's first season as head coach in 2013, compiling a 2-0 spread record. The Wolf Pack beat San Jose St. outright as a seven-point 'dog and comfortably took the cash in a 28-23 loss to BYU as a 15.5-point puppy.

-- Nevada is 1-2 both SU and ATS in three games (all on the road) against Pac-12 foes over the last three seasons. The last time the Wolf Pack faced a Pac-12 opponent at home in Reno was in 2010 when it blasted California by a 52-31 count as a 2.5-point underdog.

-- This is just the third time Wazzu has been a road 'chalk' on Mike Leach's watch. The Cougars are 1-1 ATS in the two previous situations.

-- ESPN will have the broadcast at 10:30 p.m. Eastern.

Mississippi faces familiar foe Vanderbilt

September 4, 2014

A look at things to watch in Week 2 of the Southeastern Conference football season:

GAME OF THE WEEK: No. 15 Mississippi vs. Vanderbilt at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee: It's slim pickings in the SEC this week, with several teams stepping outside of conference to face lower-level opponents. This matchup is one of the few exceptions. Though the Rebels will be favored at the NFL Titans' home field on Saturday, Vanderbilt has won five of the last seven in the series. Ole Miss struggled early before pulling away in a season-opening 35-13 win over Boise State. A convincing win over Vanderbilt would help justify the program's highest ranking since 2009.

BEST MATCHUP: East Carolina QB Shane Carden vs. South Carolina's defense. Carden is in his third season as the starter and has put up big numbers during his time with the Pirates. Now he gets to go against a South Carolina secondary that was torched by Texas A&M quarterback Kenny Hill last week.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Tennessee played 21 true freshmen Sunday in a season-opening 38-7 victory over Utah State. That represented a school record for a season opener and the highest total of true freshmen to play for any Football Bowl Subdivision program in the first week of the 2014 campaign. In total, 32 players from that game - 45 percent of the Vols who saw action - were making their Tennessee debuts.

LONG SHOT: Toledo opened its 2013 season by losing back-to-back road games against SEC teams - 24-6 to Florida and 38-23 to Missouri. Now the Rockets get to host an SEC school this week when Missouri comes to town. Missouri coach Gary Pinkel coached Toledo from 1991-2000. Pinkel isn't Toledo's only SEC connection. The Rockets are quarterbacked by Alabama transfer Phillip Ely, who threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns to lead Toledo to a 54-20 victory over New Hampshire in his first game with his new team. ''He has a lot of poise,'' Pinkel said. ''He knows what he's doing. He doesn't sit in the pocket too long and he gets rid of the ball. He's got a very experienced offensive line in front of him, and a lot of other players around him that can play.''

IMPACT PLAYER: Lightning prevented Florida from playing its scheduled season opener with Idaho on Saturday, so this week's game with Eastern Michigan represents QB Jeff Driskel's first game since he broke his right leg against Tennessee last September. Florida's chances of rebounding from a 4-8 season are largely dependent on Driskel's ability to make a successful comeback and thrive in new offensive coordinator Kurt Roper's scheme.

Trojans, Cardinal on tap in Week 2

September 4, 2014

Things to watch in Week 2 of Pac-12 play, including the first conference game:

GAME OF THE WEEK: No. 14 Southern California at No. 13 Stanford. There will be no easing into the conference season for the Trojans and Cardinal. The games between cross-division rivals are almost always tight and usually have national implications. Three of the past four games between USC and Stanford were either decided by last-second field goals or in triple overtime. The Trojans derailed the Cardinal's national-title hopes with a victory last season and Stanford took down USC when it was ranked No. 2 in 2012. The Cardinal are the two-time Pac-12 champions and USC appears to be back to its high-octane offensive form under new coach Steve Sarkisian. Should be a good one.

BEST MATCHUP: Oregon's offense against Michigan State's defense. The third-ranked Ducks have become the standard bearers for up-tempo offenses, running teams ragged while piling up yards and points. They'll face one of the nation's stingiest defenses against the seventh-ranked Spartans in a game that will be a head-to-head battle of strengths. One of the nation's best non-conference games, one that could have playoff implications, and it comes in the second week of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Pac-12 went 10-2 in the opening week, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 478-213. Six Pac-12 teams scored at least 45 points in their opener. ... The Pac-12 had three of the top 10 offensive performances of Week 1. Arizona led the nation with a school-record 787 total yards against UNLV, USC was fourth with 701 against Fresno State and Oregon was No. 7 with 673 against South Dakota. ... The conference had plenty of new faces in Week 1, with 75 freshmen seeing action. USC had the most with 11, followed by the 10 each who played for Oregon and Utah.

LONG SHOT: New Mexico against No. 17 Arizona State. The Lobos have one of the nation's best running games and a hard-to-defend triple option, but their defense is not on the same level as the offense. That doesn't bode well against an explosive offensive team like the Sun Devils, who are 25-point favorites.

IMPACT PLAYER: Connor Halliday, Washington State. The Cougars' quarterback got his season off to a rousing start, throwing for 532 yards - second-best nationally - and five TDs, though his team lost to Rutgers. This week's game against Nevada could be another offensive show.

Big 12 league play begins in Week 2

September 4, 2014

Things to watch in Week 2 of Big 12 play, including the first conference game:

GAME OF THE WEEK: No. 20 Kansas State at Iowa State in the season's first game that counts in the Big 12 standings. Iowa State opened with a 34-14 loss to North Dakota State, the FCS champion that also beat Kansas State in the 2013 season opener. Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads said having the conference opener after a disappointing loss is ''really good for our focus and concentration.'' K-State is playing its earliest league opener since being in the very first Big 12 game the opening week of the 1996 season. ''Normally, you would like for (conference games) to start later on. That would be my feeling,'' Wildcats coach Bill Snyder said. ''Ask me probably about 4 o'clock in the afternoon Saturday, and I'll probably have a better answer for you one way or another.'' The last time Iowa State played a Big 12 game so early was the second game in 2002, also its last win in a conference opener.

BEST MATCHUP: Dual-threat QBs Jake Waters and Sam Richardson. Iowa native Waters was 19-of-28 passing for 223 yards and two touchdowns, and ran 17 times for 55 yards and two more scores in K-State's opener. Richardson accounted for 209 of Iowa State's 253 total yards (20-of-31 passing for 151 yards, with 15 carries for 58 yards).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Texas is home Saturday against BYU, whose school-record 550 yards rushing last year were the most ever given up by the Longhorns. The Cougars now have two freshmen listed as offensive line starters. The Texas OL has changed just since last week, with a season-ending injury to the center and both tackles being suspended. ... Texas Tech QB Davis Webb completed 39 of 52 passes for 452 yards with four TDs in a tougher-than-expected 42-35 win over Central Arkansas. Bradley Marquez had 11 catches for 184 yards with two fourth-quarter TDs (70 and 27 yards). While Webb has multiple TD passes in eight of his last nine games, Marquez had averaged three catches for 36 yards his previous 29 career games. On top of that, Red Raiders RB DeAndre Washington is the Big 12 rushing leader after his 104-yard opener.

LONG SHOT: Towson at West Virginia. While the Big 12 has first-week losses to FCS national champion North Dakota State two seasons in a row, 2013 FCS runner-up Towson lost eight returning offensive starters and was upset at home by Central Connecticut in its season opener. The Mountaineers play their home opener after a 33-23 loss to No. 2 Alabama in which they felt they missed several opportunities.

IMPACT PLAYER: Baylor defensive line. The defensive front accounted for seven of the Bears' school record-tying nine sacks in the season-opening 45-0 win over SMU, which was held to only 67 total yards on 64 plays.

BYU romp still hangs over Texas

September 4, 2014

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - It was the stuff of Texas nightmares: BYU quarterback Taysom Hill and the Cougars ripping the Longhorns for 550 yards rushing last season in a crushing and embarrassing loss.

It's also a nightmare the Longhorns have had to live over and over again. BYU's romp through the Texas defense featured heavily in the low-lights film new coach Charlie Strong and his staff subjected their new players to shortly after they got to campus.

The reminders won't stop until BYU (1-0) and Texas (1-0) play again Saturday night in Austin.

''We still hear about it. That's just how these (coaches) are,'' Texas senior cornerback Quandre Diggs said. ''They are going to continue to rub it in our face and that's what they want to do.''

Last season's loss was galling on several levels for Texas. Coach Mack Brown had been promoting his team as worthy of a return to national prominence after three sub-par seasons. Instead, a national television audience saw Texas get pushed around like a high school team.

Brown fumed on the flight back to Austin and fired defensive coordinator Manny Diaz the next day in a desperate attempt to save his season. But the fire under Brown had been lit and he was gone in December after 16 seasons.

And while the defense was embarrassed, the offense was beaten up in ways that are still affecting the Longhorns. Quarterback David Ash suffered his first concussion against BYU last season and has played only six quarters of football since.

Ash started Texas' win over North Texas last week, but experienced headaches and dizziness shortly after the game and on Monday was ruled out against BYU. Sophomore Tyrone Swoopes will get his first career start and it will come behind a patchwork offensive line with three starters out for injury (center Dominic Espinosa) or suspensions (tackles Desmond Harrison and Kennedy Estelle).

Texas officials have set no timetable for Ash's return, but his injury history suggests it could be a long time - if ever.

A year ago, Ash threw a pair of touchdowns but Texas didn't score again after he was hurt in the second half. The romp began when Hill sprinted 68 yards for BYU's first touchdown. Texas never came close to stopping BYU's option after that and Hill scored twice more on long runs.

''It was surreal. It was like I was able to see a childhood dream come true,'' Hill said. ''We just had so much fun.''

BYU finished with a school record for yards rushing. Texas set a record for most yards allowed.

Diggs called the defensive collapse ''probably the most embarrassed I've ever been.''

New Longhorns defensive coordinator Vance Bedford, who played at Texas, was at Louisville with Strong last season. He watched the game on television and was shocked by what he saw.

''I grew up in a wishbone era - Oklahoma, Alabama - and 300 yards rushing back in those days was something special,'' Bedford said.

The rematch will be a big test to see just how far Strong has taken his new team with his disciplinarian approach. The Longhorns returned most of their defensive starters from a year ago and held North Texas to just 94 total yards last week.

But Hill and the Cougars are something different altogether. Hill ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns and passed for three more TDs last week in a season-opening win at Connecticut.

Texas will be eager to avenge their embarrassment, Hill said, and the Cougars will be ready.

''I'm sure they've had an intense week of practice,'' he said. ''We're prepared to come and match their energy.''

Six NCAAF teams that impressed the oddsmakers the most

You never get a second chance to make a first impression - and boy did these programs turn some heads in their Week 1 debuts. So much so, oddsmakers were forced to recognize those opening efforts and seriously adjust their odds to win the college football national championship.

Here are six of the most impressive squads from Week 1 and how they look going into their next meeting:

Georgia Bulldogs (18/1 to 10/1 to win national title)

After playing Clemson to a tie in the first half, Georgia made some halftime adjustments, the defense played lights out and the running game systematically took apart the Clemson defense.

Up next: -3 at South Carolina (Sept. 13)

This game is in Columbia and the Gamecocks have won the last two tilts at Williams-Brice Stadium. I expect Steve Spurrier to have his squad ready to go but keep an eye on the health of RB Mike Davis, as he could be the difference in this game.

Louisville Cardinals (300/1 to 100/1)

Louisville's debut in the ACC was very successful, beating Miami by 18 points (- 5.5). New quarterback Will Gardner played very well (20 for 28 for 206 with two TDs) as did RB Dominique Brown (33 carries for 143 yards and one TD).

Up next: -36.5 vs. Murray State

FCS Murray State is the next opponent on a short week for Louisville but keep an eye on the Week 3 game at Virginia. The Cavs played very well against UCLA and could be a tougher matchup than bettors thought before the season started.

LSU Tigers (20/1 to 15/1)

The Tigers didn't look particularly great against Wisconsin but they showed a lot of heart by coming back from a large deficit. Louisiana State is very young and should get better each week.

Up next: -34 vs. Sam Houston State

Another FCS matchup on the board and then the Tigers have a date with Louisiana-Monroe, who knocked off Wake Forest in Week 1. That one has the ability to be closer than anticipated.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (100/1 to 60/1)

Everett Golson is back and looks like the type of player that could put the Irish on his back. He threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns while adding three rushing touchdowns versus Rice. With Golson, they are a completely different team.

Up next: -3.5 vs. Michigan

The line has actually moved down from at 5.5 the past week. The last time these two teams played in South Bend, the Irish won 13-6. A lot of action seems to be going the way of Michigan right now. But loyal Golden Domers will come in strong Saturday morning.

Texas A&M Aggies (100/1 to 20/1)

Johnny Who? Kenny Hill had a breakout game for Texas A&M and Kevin Sumlin, as the Aggies shocked South Carolina in Week 1.

Up next: -49 vs. Lamar

The Aggies schedule sets up very nicely for them as they play Rice and SMU after they dispatch of Lamar and then ease into the SEC West schedule with Arkansas. With the amount of talent the Aggies have on offense they will face some lofty spreads the next three weeks.

USC Trojans (30/1 to 20/1)

Despite the distractions prior to the game, the Trojans came out and ran roughshod over Fresno State.

Up next: +2.5 at Stanford

Since last week the line has moved in favor of USC. Bettors may want to pump the breaks on USC a little bit in this game. The Trojans haven't been Stanford on the road since 2008 and are just 2-7 ATS in their last nine clashes with the Cardinal.

Upset alert: Five potential college football Week 2 shockers

College football Week 2 is packed with upset potential. We breakdown five matchups and ring the outright upset alarm, rankings just how probable these stunners could be Saturday.

Old Dominion Monarchs at North Carolina State Wolfpack (-17)

Moneyline odds: Old Dominion +875/NC State -850

North Carolina State struggled mightily against Georgia Southern in Week 1 but did rally in the fourth quarter for the win. With senior Taylor Heinicke at quarterback, the Monarchs can flat out score points and that's an area that the Wolfpack struggled in with new quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

Likelihood of upset: Small

Gardner-Webb Bulldogs at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (-22)

Moneyline odds: Gardner-Webb +975/Wake Forest -1,975

The Demon Deacons gained just 94 yards in their season opener and scored 10 points against UL Monroe. Now they’re a 24.5-point favorite in Week 2. Gardner-Webb lost by 10 to Furman. Keep in mind that Wake's biggest victory from 2013 was 24 points (over Presbyterian and Maryland) and that they only scored more than 24 points four times in 2013. This feeling is less about confidence in Gardner-Webb and more about a lack of confidence in Wake's offense.

Likelihood of upset: Medium

Northern Illinois Huskies at Northwestern Wildcats (-7)

Moneyline odds: Northern Illinois +243/Northwestern -285

In Week 1, NIU won by 52 over Presbyterian while Northwestern lost to Cal by seven. Northern Illinois may not have Jordan Lynch anymore but it has a fantastic running attack and Northwestern will struggle to stop it. All of the offseason hoopla about Northwestern unionizing may have divided the team and interrupted its focus. We will likely find that out after this game.

Likelihood of upset: Large

Colorado State Rams at Boise State Broncos (-10.5)

Moneyline odds: Colorado State +330/Boise State -410

The Broncos fell flat against Ole Miss in Week 1. They hung in for three quarters and then got blown out in the fourth. Colorado State beat in-state rival Colorado behind an aggressive running game that featured former Alabama RB Dee Hart and Treyous Jarrells (both ran for over 100 yards).

Likelihood of upset: XL

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Illinois Fighting Illini (-6)

Moneyline odds: Western Kentucky +195/Illinois -235

No Bobby Petrino, no problem for WKU in Week 1 as the Hilltoppers led the FBS in passing yards with 569 in a 59-31 rout of Bowling Green (the 2013 MAC Champions). Illinois struggled to get past Youngstown State, needing 21 points in the fourth quarter to win by 11. A lot of pressure is on new Illini quarterback Wes Lunt to put the team on his back.

Likelihood of upset: Jumbo

Game of the Day: Pittsburgh at Boston College
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Panthers at Boston College Eagles (+4, 49)

Pittsburgh and Boston College used rushing performances that connected them to their glorious pasts en route to easy season-opening wins last weekend. The former Big East rivals try to do the same Friday when they face each other for the first time as ACC foes as BC hosts the Panthers. Florida transfer Tyler Murphy threw for 173 yards and rushed for 118 versus Massachusetts, becoming the first Eagles quarterback since Doug Flutie in 1984 to rush for more than 100 yards.

The Eagles generated 338 of their 511 total yards on the ground in a 30-7 triumph – their first game since the graduation of Heisman Trophy finalist Andre Williams, who became only the 16th player in NCAA history to rush for more than 2,000 yards last year. Pittsburgh’s own bruising back – 250-pound James Conner – ripped FCS Delaware for 153 yards and four touchdowns in one half during a 62-0 victory, part of 409-yard rushing effort that was the most for the school since the 1976 national championship season. The Eagles and Panthers, who met every year from 1993-2004, resume their rivalry after a 10-year break.

TV:
7 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE HISTORY:
Boston College opened as 4.5-point home dogs and have been bet to +4. The total has held steady at 49.

INJURY REPORT:
Pittsburgh - WR Tyler Boyd probable Friday (finger). Boston College - OL Harris Williams out Friday (ankle).

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (1-0, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U):
In addition to posting their biggest margin of victory since 1913, the Panthers outgained the Blue Hens 501-57 en route to their first shutout in nine years. However, not all the news was positive for Pittsburgh as receiver Tyler Boyd, who set school freshman records for receptions and receiving yards last fall, left in the second quarter after dislocating a finger on his left hand on a punt return. Boyd’s probable status for Friday means more of the offensive load could fall on sophomore quarterback Chad Voytik, who went 10-for-13 for 84 yards and two TDs in his first career start.

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (1-0, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U):
The Eagles were slightly less proficient on the ground (338 yards on 61 attempts) than the Panthers last week, but turned to Murphy as well as running backs Tyler Rouse (87 yards) and Myles Willis (57) to replace the production Williams usually accounted for last season. "We're not just one back anymore. All of us are coming and the quarterback's running, too,” Willis told the Boston Herald. Josh Bordner, who served as the backup quarterback over the last three seasons, fared well in his debut as a receiver, finishing with four catches for 81 yards and a touchdown.

TRENDS:

* Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Panthers are 0-4 ATS in their last four games following a SU win.
* Over is 5-0 in the Eagles last five home games.

CONSENSUS:
Almost 62 percent of wagers are backing Pittsburgh at -4.5, with almost 61 percent of total bets on the under 49.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

NFL trends to ponder for Week 1 (all records are ATS):
-- Patriots are 18-8-2 as divisional road favorites.

-- Bengals covered once in last seven divisional road games.

-- Jets covered six of their last eight home games.

-- Chiefs are 2-10 in last dozen games as home favorite.

-- 49ers covered eight of last nine as road favorites.

-- Arizona is 11-2-1 in last 14 non-divisional games.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend......

13) There are three home underdogs in the NFL this weekend: Falcons-Dolphins-Cowboys. Which one has the best chance of winning? I’d say Atlanta, based on Siants’ struggles away from the Superdome in recent years.

12) Michigan State-Oregon is a statement game for conference supremacy, which is more important now, with the 4-team playoff looming for the first time. Spartans have had a very good defense recently; it gets a huge test this week in Eugene.

11) Buccaneers (4-12 last year) are 2-point favorites over Carolina (12-4 last year); was Lovie Smith that much of an upgrade over Greg Schiano, the last Tampa coach? (yes) Bucs' defense will force more turnovers under Lovie Smith.

10) Stanford-USC is Steve Sarkisian’s first Pac-12 game with the Trojans, as both teams step way up in class after dismantling inferior opponents last week. Cardinal has won five of last seven series games.

9) Since 1990, only 25% of NFL teams who lost their opener made it to the playoffs; keep that in mind while your favorite team plays Sunday.

8) Notre Dame-Michigan are playing for the last time in the foreseeable future, as Irish will be playing more ACC teams as payment for that league letting Notre Dame play basketball in the ACC, thereby siphoning off some of their NCAA tournament money. One thing about Notre Dame, they make a lot of money.

7) Giants were 5-0 this preseason, but no one thought they played well- their subs pulled some games out at the end and they won ‘em all this summer. Now comes the opener in Detroit; Lions have better talent, but Coughlin vs Caldwell is an epic coaching mismatch.

6) BYU ran the football for 550 yards in a 41-20 dismantling of Texas last year. 550 yards. You think the Texas conditioning coach mentioned that once or twice during conditioning drills this winter? 5) Oakland’s Derek Carr is the only rookie QB starting this week, while Jets start 2nd-year QB Geno Smith. Big difference between playing for Fresno State and starting in the NFL, but Carr beat out Matt Schaub—we’ll see how he does.

4) Texas A&M’s offense treated South Carolina like a piñata last week, scoring 52 points in Columbia; how do the Gamecocks bounce back as a double digit favorite over an East Carolina squad with experienced QB Shane Carden running the show? Pirates have historically played their BCS opponents pretty tough.

3) How much will Peyton Manning miss Wes Welker and which Bronco will step up and make the plays Welker would’ve?

2) Oakland A’s need to right their ship this weekend against Houston; 23 games left, they need to play pretty good ball to make the playoffs. A’s were terrific for four months, then dreadful in August; September needs to be a better month.

1) How will Shaun Hill do against Minnesota, in his first NFL start since 2010? He has a 13-13 record as an NFL starter. Will the Rams be improved? How will Matt Cassel do in Norv Turner’s offense?
