Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Bovada has posted 17.5 as the over/under for NFL quarterbacks who start all 16 of their team's regular season games this season.

-- 49ers have played one game in their new stadium; they've already torn up all the turf and put new turf down. They host the Chargers Sunday.

-- Garrett Richards (knee) needs surgery, is out 6-9 months. He tore the patellar tendon in his knee Tuesday. Angels also acquired Gordon Beckham from Chicago for a player to be named later.

-- Brandon Guyer got the only hit against David Price, but the Rays beat their old friend 1-0 Thursday afternoon in St Pete.

-- Nine of the 90 players on the Eagles' roster went to Oregon, where Chip Kelly obviously used to be the Ducks' coach.

-- Madison Bumgarner now has 13 RBI, most by a pitcher this season.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here......

13) Great to hear Jim Kelly get good news this week; he still needs our prayers, but things are looking up in his fight against cancer. Know someone who sat next to Kelly on a flight few years back; says he’s a terrific guy, a regular guy, in addition to being a Hall of Famer. We obviously wish him the best.

12) In the last 25 days, the ALS Association has raised around $42M, mostly thru the Ice Bucket Challenge. Totally amazing, just a great job by the ALS people.

11) Had to be weird for David Price to pitch against his old team the Rays in his old home stadium yesterday. His whole pro career had been with Tampa Bay; he only got traded last month. Price lost 1-0 despite allowing only one hit.

10) For some reason, the Toronto Blue Jays think the Creighton Bluejays’ new logo looks too much like theirs and want them to come up with a new one.

Huh? Blue jays are blue jays, no? One faces left, the other right; they do look alike but its because they represent the same darned thing, a blue jay? Of course they look alike!!! Don’t those Toronto people have anything better to do?

9) 10 of last year’s 12 starting QB’s in the Pac-12 conference are back this season, compared to only four of 12 in ACC, five of 12 in Big X, six of 14 in the SEC. At first glance, it’s a down year for QB’s in the SEC.

8) Zack Greinke has a sore elbow; his start was pushed back from Thursday to Saturday, with Kershaw/Haren each moving up a day. Solid break for the Mets, who miss Kershaw now.

7) Next ballplayer from Cuba to make a lot of money here will be OF Rusney Castillo, being sought after by as many as six MLB teams. He showed surprising power in workouts and the success of Abreu/Cespedes figures to drive the price up a little more.

6) VCU beat out North Carolina, Indiana and Georgetown for services of HS guard Kenny Williams. Anytime VCU beats the Tar Heels out for a recruit, that’s a big statement made by coach Shaka Smart.

5) QB Braxton Miller’s season-ending shoulder surgery resulted in lines on Ohio State games being adjusted 4.5-7 points away from the Buckeyes.

4) New Southern Miss basketball coach Doc Sadler had one starter coming back from Donnie Tyndall’s last USM team, but he’s transferred now, so the Golden Eagles are basically starting from scratch under Sadler this fall. No wonder every time I walked into a gym in Las Vegas last month, Sadler was already there, watching prospects play.

3) Hard to believe, but the guy who hired Charlie Weis as the football coach at Kansas is the same guy who hired Bill Self as basketball coach. He'll be hiring a new football coach pretty soon; Weis is stupendously overrated.

2) Tom Coughlin suggests the NFL move the ball to the 1-yard line for PAT’s; if they did that (instead of the 2, where it is now) would more teams go for 2-point conversions? I’m thinking they would.

1) “I can find anyone with a cellphone in less han 90 seconds.” Heard a cop in a TV show say that last week; is that true? If so, it’s a little scary.

Low scores produce big night for Under bettors

Runs were scarce at major league parks Thursday and Under bettors capitalized in a big way. The Under registered an almost-unblemished day, posting a record of 7-0-1.

The lone push came from the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds combining for eight runs to match the closing total.

Six games featured three runs or less, including two 1-0 shutouts and one 2-0 shutout.

There is the usual full schedule of action on tap for Friday, with totals currently ranging from seven (San Francisco at Washington, Seattle at Boston) to 9.5 (Miami at Colorado). The Baltimore Orioles at Chicago Cubs total is currently off the board.

Two teams meet that have failed to create runs

The Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals are set to clash in a weekend series, but don't be surprised with a lack of offense. In the past seven meetings between the two clubhouses the over/under record is 6-0-1.

The seven games have seen a combined 29 runs for an average of 4.1 runs per game.

Carlos Beltran, NY Yankees - Ques Fri

Beltran missed his second-straight game Thursday after receiving treatment for his right elbow. He is questionable to play Friday against the White Sox.

David Ortiz, Boston - Ques Fri

Ortiz was taken out of Wednesday's game and did not play Thursday due to general soreness. He is questionable for Friday against the Mariners.

Pitcher has dominated team for his entire career

The Milwaukee Brewers will send Yovani Gallardo to the mound against the Pittsburgh Pirates, which is a great sign for the Brewers. In Gallardo's 14 career starts at home against the Pirates has seen the Brewers go 12-2.

Gallardo has only given up 28 runs, average of two runs per game, while striking out 97 batters, average of just under seven a game.

Angels face unfriendly territory this weekend

The Los Angels Angels are about to play some of the most important games of the season when they challenge the Oakland Athletics this weekend. Unfortunately for the Angels, they are playing at O.co Coliseum where they are 3-7 in the past 10.

The Angels have been outscored 55-48 during those games, however; 25 percent of their offense (12 runs) came in one game.

Orioles cashing for bettors in Gausman's road starts

The Baltimore Orioles are 5-1 in starting pitcher Kevin Gausman's previous six starts away from Oriole Park.

That's the spot he'll be in as the O's visit the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field as +100 road dogs Friday afternoon.

Orioles' wins at Tampa Bay (+136), Boston (+119), Oakland (+136), Seattle (+174), Washington (+127) and Cleveland (+116) have supplied bettors with plenty value in the right-hander's road starts.

MLB Weekend betting cheat sheet: Diamondbacks limp home
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend's major-league action:

Unders Galore

Thursday was the most profitable Under day of the season, with teams combining to go 0-8-1 O/U. Only two teams - Atlanta and San Francisco - scored more than four runs, while the Braves, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Angels and Washington Nationals all recorded shutouts.

Diamondbacks Limp Home

The Arizona Diamondbacks (-121, 8.5) return home Friday for their series-opening tilt with the San Diego Padres. The Diamondbacks went 2-8 on their 10-game road trip through Cleveland, Miami and Washington, scoring just 21 runs on the entire trip en route to a 4-6 O/U mark.

Lester's Home-Field Advantage

Jon Lester should have a decided upper hand Saturday as he and the Oakland Athletics face fellow lefty C.J. Wilson and the visiting Angels. Lester is 7-4 with a 1.88 ERA and a 3-10 O/U mark in home starts this season, while Wilson is 3-6 with a 5.22 ERA on the road.

Sale Owns Yankees

Best of luck to the Bronx Bombers on Sunday, as they tangle with Chris Sale and the Chicago White Sox. Sale is 3-0 with a 0.85 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 31 2/3 career innings versus the Yankees, and tossed six innings of one-hit, 10-strikeout ball against them earlier this season.

Pitching Notes

* Felix Hernandez will look to start a new streak of impressive starts Friday as he and the Seattle Mariners (-180, 7) face the host Boston Red Sox. Hernandez went just five innings in his last start, ending his streak of outings with seven or more innings and two or fewer runs allowed at 16.

* Jordan Lyles has an impressive string on the line Saturday as he leads the host Colorado Rockies into a showdown with the Miami Marlins. Lyles has racked up five consecutive overs - going 1-0 with four no-decisions over that span - and is 11-4 O/U for the year.

* Stephen Strasburg has had plenty of success against San Francisco as he and the Washington Nationals entertain the Giants on Sunday. Strasburg is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four career starts versus the Giants, including an impressive win as a -127 favorite back in June.

Hitting Notes

* The Mariners may have some trouble containing David Ortiz. The Boston Red Sox slugger has been red-hot over the past seven days, going 12-for-21 with four home runs and eight RBIs - and he's the only one hitting well for Boston, which has dropped five straight.

* It could be a long Saturday for Rays outfielder David DeJesus. He's hitting just .179 with two doubles and a homer in 78 career at-bats versus Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Mark Buehrle, who gets the call in the second game of the series.

* John Jaso will look to end his struggles versus Jered Weaver when the Athletics and Angels do battle Sunday. Jaso has just one hit in 17 career at-bats against Weaver, though he has drawn five walks - the most of any Oakland hitter versus Weaver.

Totals Streak

Baltimore Orioles (1-5-1 O/U): Solid pitching has been the catalyst for the Orioles' four-game winning streak; they've allowed just seven runs during that stretch, which was capped by a sweep of the host Chicago White Sox. Baltimore is 54-68-3 O/U for the year.

Prop of the Day

Bettors may want to take a chance on the Miami Marlins prevailing by exactly one run Friday night in Colorado (+600). The Marlins have played one-run games in nine of right-hander Henderson Alvarez's last 14 starts - and won all nine.

Injury Notes

* The Angels have lost starter Garrett Richards for the rest of the season with a torn patellar tendon. Richards was one of the best value plays in the majors this season, racking up $1,060 as the Angels went 19-7 in his 26 starts.

* The Dodgers are expected to have shortstop Hanley Ramirez (oblique) back in the lineup Sunday afternoon against the Mets. Ramirez has missed the last 12 games with the injury; Los Angeles is 6-6 SU, 5-7 O/U and -131 units in his absence.

Weather Watch

* Wind at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington will blow in from right field at 9 mph for Friday's game between host Texas (+134, 9) and Kansas City. Teams averaged 8.19 runs and 1.85 homers in 27 games under similar conditions in 2013, slightly below stadium averages.

* A 9 mph wind will blow in from center field Saturday when the Red Sox host the Mariners. Teams averaged just 1.57 homers while batting a paltry .227 in seven games with the wind blowing in from center a year ago - well below Fenway Park averages.

Team seeing rare high total, has paid out

The Miami Marlins have not faced totals of 9.0 or higher this season often, but on there rare instances they have paid out. This season the Marlins have gone over in both of their games in which they have a total of 9.0 or higher.

The Marlins will travel to Colorado with a total of 9.5 Friday.

Solid outings by this team as big favorites

The Cleveland Indians have not found themselves favored by -180 or higher this season, but they have made sure to walk away with wins. The Indians are 3-1 as heavy -180 or higher favorites including winning three in a row.

The Indians have notched 24 runs in those four games and have scored seven in all three wins.

Cleveland is -193 faves when they host the Houston Astros Friday.

ChiSox, Danks racking up L's against AL East

Chicago White Sox pitcher John Danks' struggles against the AL East have been well documented, evidenced by the Sox posting an ugly 5-16 record in the 29-year-old's last 21 outings against AL East competition.

That's a trend bettors need to be aware of as Danks will be on the mound when the South Siders visit the New York Yankees in the Bronx Friday. The Yankees are presently -182 faves with a total of 8.5.

Vital betting stat you need to know for PHI-STL

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick is a scorching-hot 8-1 on the Over in his last nine starts, and he'll be on the mound once again when his Phillies host the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park Friday.

Ace Adam Wainwright will counter for the Cards. St. Louis is currently -162 faves on the moneyline with an O/U of 7.5.

Cleveland rocks, but not for this ball club

The Houston Astros have not enjoyed life at Progressive Field as of late, dropping all of their last six meetings against the Cleveland Indians in The Cleve.

The 'Stros will try to buck that trend when they renew acquaintances with the Tribe in Ohio Friday. Cleveland is presently heavy -190 faves with an Over/Under of 8.5.

Nats feasting on right-handed pitching

The Washington Nationals have been a fantastic bet against right-handed pitching lately, posting a spotless 8-0 record in their last eight games against righties.

Veteran right-hander Tim Hudson will be on the bump for the San Francisco Giants for their matchup against the Nats in D.C. Friday. Doug Fister counters for the Nationals.

Washington is currently -146 favorites with a total of seven for the NL matchup.

Over bettors profiting when Jays/Rays meet in Canada

The Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays have had no problem putting plenty of runs on the board at Rogers Centre. Five out of the last six meetings have gone over the total when they've met faced off north of the border, and they'll meet again in Toronto Friday.

The Jays are currently -127 favorites on the moneyline with a total of eight.

Reds clubbing lefties at home, face southpaw Friday

When the Cincinnati Reds have faced left-handed pitching at home lately, their backers have been laughing all the way to the bank. In Cincy's last 10 games against southpaws at Great American Ball Park, the Reds are a sizzling 9-1.

They'll face off against another lefty - Mike Minor - and the rest of the Atlanta Braves in Ohio Friday. The Reds are presently -108 faves with a total of 7.5.

Mariners cashing in for bettors in bounce back games

The Seattle Mariners are on quit the tear in the AL playoff race, and a main reason for that is their efficiency to bounce back after a loss. In their last eight games when losing in their previous outing, the M's are a lights out 8-0.

After losing 4-3 to the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday, the Mariners will try and continue that trend when they begin a three game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park Friday. King Felix Hernandez gets the ball for Seattle, while Joe Kelly counters for the BoSox.

The Mariners are currently -178 faves with a total of seven.

Friday's Week 3 NFL preseason primer
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the NFL preseason officially past the halfway mark, many teams will be giving their first-team offenses one final practice run before using the final game to evaluate existing positional battles. Here's a look at Friday's slate of games:

Carolina Panthers at New England Patriots (-5.5, 44.5)

* Expect to see Panthers quarterback Cam Newton look for Kelvin Benjamin plenty against the Patriots, after the rookie wide receiver had two catches for 41 yards last week against Kansas City and nearly hauled in a long pass for a touchdown. Head coach Ron Rivera is reportedly expected to play the starters less than he did against the Chiefs.

* Patriots head coach Bill Belichick doesn't share Rivera's view on playing time heading into the third game of the preseaon; he's expected to give Tom Brady and the rest of the starters at least one half of action, and likely more. Keep an eye on running back Steven Ridley, who fumbled last week and is on a short leash due to problems hanging on to the ball last season.

New York Giants at New York Jets (EVEN, 42.5)

* The Giants are a mess at left tackle going into the game, with starter Will Beatty expected to see just 20 snaps in his recovery from a broken leg and backups Charles Brown and James Brewer both expected to miss the game. It's just the latest in a series of concerns for the Giants' fledgling first-team offense, which has looked dreadful through the first three exhibition games.

* Word out of New York is that the quarterback competition between incumbent Geno Smith and newcomer Michael Vick remains close, meaning either player could make a convincing case for the starting job with a strong showing Friday. The Jets own a 24-20-1 advantage in the all-time preseason series between the teams, including a 24-21 overtime triumph a year ago.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Detroit Lions (-3, 44.5)

* The quarterback situation in Jacksonville remains up in the air; rookie Blake Bortles has only had to face opponents' second- and third-team defenses but will finally see some first-team action in Detroit. The center position remains a major concern for the team, with Mike Brewster struggling and no one on the roster stepping up amid his stumbles.

* Superstar wide receiver Calvin Johnson will finally make his preseason debut for the Lions after completing his recovery from offseason knee and finger surgeries. Detroit will also welcome back defensive end Ziggy Ansah, whose return from a shoulder injury should bolster a defensive line that has managed just one sack through the first two games.

Oakland Raiders at Green Bay Packers (-7, 43.5)

* Friday's game marks the return to Green Bay of big-play receiver James Jones, who joined the Raiders in the offseason following seven seasons with the Packers. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson anticipates Matt Schaub and the rest of the first-team offense getting extensive work in Green Bay, playing at least the entire first half and likely a good portion of the third quarter.

* Green Bay's first-team offense has been sensational through the first two preseason games, gaining 230 yards and 12 first downs while scoring 17 points in just 32 plays. Aaron Rodgers and Co. should feast on Oakland's suspect first-team defense, which has allowed opposing quarterbacks to go 14-for-16 for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the first two games.

Chicago Bears at Seattle Seahawks (-7, 45)

* The Bears are expected to show off new wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who signed with the team last weekend; it isn't clear whether he'll line up with the first-team offense or get his reps in the second half. Chris Williams will return to kick return duties after missing last week's game against Jacksonville; a good showing Friday could land him the starting role for Week 1.

* The Seahawks are hoping to get a more extensive look at wide receiver Percy Harvin, who played just one snap in the first preseason game but had four catches on five targets for 31 yards against San Diego last week. Safety Kam Chancellor is still recovering from offseason hip surgery, but is said to be close to 100 percent and may see action Friday.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Twins 20, Tigers 6-- Detroit trails the Royals by 2.5 games in AL Central.

-- Mariners 5, Red Sox 3-- Seattle was down 3-0 with two out in ninth, rallied for an uplifting win. Boston signed Rusney Castillo for seven years, $72.5M.

-- Pirates 6, Brewers 2-- Jeff Locke threw six innings, allowed two runs, two hits, with six walks, no strikeouts and still won. Very unusual.

-- Rays 8, Blue Jays 0-- Smyly is 2-1, 2.25 in four starts for the Rays.

-- A's 5, Angels 3-- Oakland is 33-7 when Coco Crisp scores a run, 42-45 in all its other games. Angels still lead AL West by a game.

-- Orioles 3B Manny Machado needs a knee operation, is out for the year.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: My suggestions for Rob Manfred..........

13) Geographic realignment. Bud Selig wanted to do this, but got rebuffed on it. Too bad. Here is the way I would re-align the divisions:

East
Red Sox
Mets
Bronx
Phillies
Blue Jays

Great Lakes
Reds
Indians
Tigers
Twins
Pirates

Southeast
Braves
Orioles
Marlins
Rays
Nationals

Midwest
Cubs
White Sox
Royals
Brewers
Cardinals

Mountain
Diamondbacks
Rockies
Astros
Mariners
Rangers

Pacific
Angels
Dodgers
A's
Padres
Giants

12) The schedule.........
72 games-- Play four division rivals 18 times each......
60 games-- Six games against other 10 teams in conference
30 games-- Six games against five teams in division in the other conference, which alternates every year.

11) Leave pace of play alone, it is not a problem, except for the media. One of baseball’s strengths is that it doesn’t have a clock, it makes it unique. If you have to do something to speed up games, eliminate visits to the mound within a half-inning.

10) With that in mind, coaches do not come on the field during games; no stalling on the mound; you want to change pitches, just sub him like it was a basketball game. Call time, signal the new guy in.

9) Players are only people who should wear uniforms; why do baseball coaches wear uniforms anyway?

8) No activity is washed out; if game gets rained out in second inning, you pick it up from the point of interruption. Anything that happens counts.

7) All-Star Game goes to a USA vs World format; this would increase the competitiveness of the game, believe me. Home field in World Series is decided by who wins season series between Eastern and Western Conference.

6) Move trade deadline back to August 31; with second Wild Card, not many teams are out of contention by July 31. Trading creates interest.

5) Would it be too much to ask for all the warm weather/dome teams to play at home the first week each season? It won't be something that eliminates rainouts, but it should help reduce them.

4) Get rid of the designated hitter. Placate the players’ union with an increase of 60 jobs; go to 27-man rosters, but only increase rosters to 33 after September 1.

3) There is a place for the DH; spring training and All-Star games. DH would be optional for spring games, but since outcomes don’t matter, teams could use it to get guys more at-bats. As for the All-Star Game, no one wants to see a pitcher bat in one of those.

2) Its OK to imitate a good idea. Have managers throw the red flag for replay reviews, instead of going out on the field. Its just simpler. Overall, I like the replay system, but having managers go out there to stall to see if they want to challenge a play doesn’t seem right. Just use the flag system.

1) This is very important and probably the least likely thing to happen: $80M salary floor, $160M salary cap. Imagine how great the sport would be with more competitive balance, like in NFL or NBA or the NFL. Teams should be able to retain their own home-grown stars.

Small market teams can compete in small windows, but not over the long term. This way, everyone would have a chance, every year. Except the stupid teams.
