Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Miami Dolphins are keeping both coordinators on field level, unusual for an NFL team- they say it gets play calls into the QB ten seconds faster.

-- 0-7 week at home for the Red Sox, who also spent $72M for a Cuban outfielder after they low-balled Jon Lester, then traded him. Interesting decision.

-- Arizona backup QB Drew Stanton has been active for every game the last three seasons, but hasn't gotten into any; pretty good job.

-- How much different would the NFL be if punters/kickers had to play another position, the way Danny White or Steve Spurrier used to?

-- Sam Bradford is out for the year, Cam Newton has a broken rib, the first couple teams Tampa Bay plays this season, so thats a plus for them.

-- Mixed bag weekend for me as a fan; A's won two of three against the Angels, but took on some injuries. Bradford's injury is a blow to the Rams, who now turn to 34-year old Shaun Hill; he is 13-13 as an NFL starter.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Some of my favorite quotes........

13) "You're the one who put me here!!!!"
June 1998. A 12-year old third baseman had just made three errors against my Little League team, his coach was giving him more than a little grief and finally the kid had enough. I was standing 20 feet away; was laughing so hard I had to walk further away-- one of the great lines ever.

12) "If you have no destination, you'll never get there." Harvey Mackay

11) "There is nothing more unequal than the equal treatment of unequal people." Thomas Jefferson

10) "When I wake up in the morning and I turn that film on, it's like reading a book and it's exciting. I don't read books, but if I read books it would be like reading a book." LSU football coach Les Miles

9) "You're only given one little spark of madness. You musn't lose it." Robin Williams

8) “My rule was I wouldn’t recruit a kid if he had grass in front of his house. That’s not my world. My world has a cracked sidewalk.” college basketball coach, the late Al McGuire

7) "I love money. I love everything about it. I've bought some pretty good stuff. Got me a $300 pair of socks, got a fur sink. Let's see, bought an electric dog polisher, a gasoline-powered turtleneck sweater, and, of course, I bought some dumb stuff, too." Steve Martin

6) "Listen, Lupus, you didn't come into this life just to sit around on a dugout bench, did ya? Now get your ass out there and do the best you can." Coach Buttermaker from the Bad News Bears

5) “We will rally around Kurt Warner, and we will play good football.” Dick Vermeil, August 1999

4) “America is the only country where a significant proportion of the population believes that professional wrestling is real but the moon landing was faked.” David Letterman

3) "Career highlights? I had two. I got an intentional walk from Sandy Koufax and I got out of a rundown against the Mets.” Bob Uecker, who hit 14 HRs in his major league career, with three of them against Hall of Fame pitchers. Really.

2) “What the world needs is less mental hospitals and more minor league baseball.” Bill Murray in Rolling Stone magazine, 1982

1) "There's no such thing as a sure thing. Thats why they call it gambling." Oscar Madison, from the Odd Couple

Pirates becoming a boon for Over backers

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been participating in a lot of high-scoring games lately, and as a result, bettors backing the Over have been collecting some nice profits.

In the Bucs' last eight games, the Over is a red-hot 6-1-1 through Sunday. They'll host the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park Monday.

The Pirates are presently -127 faves with a total of seven.

Rays, Odorizzi not producing as dogs

When the Tampa Bay Rays are listed as underdogs with Jake Odorizzi on the mound, their bettors are taking a hit.

In Odorizzi's last seven starts when the Rays are dogs, Tampa is a paltry 1-6. He'll be on the mound when the Rays visit the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards Monday. The Rays are underdogs again at +115 with a total of eight.

Red Sox ice cold behind this pitcher

It's been a tough season for the Boston Red Sox, but they've really been suffering behind starter Clay Bucholz over the past month. In Bucholz's last six outings, the Sox are an ugly 0-6.

He'll take the mound Monday when Boston takes on the Toronto Blue Jays north of the border Monday. The Jays are presently -121 faves with an O/U of nine.

Over scorching hot when A's-Astros meet in Houston

Offense has been the story when the Oakland Athletics have visited the Houston Astros in the Lone Star State recently. In the last seven meetings between the two clubs at Minute Maid Park, the Over is 6-1 through Sunday.

The 'Stros host the A's yet again in Houston Monday. Oakland is currently a -168 favorite with a total of eight.

Nats dominating competition behind Roark

The Washington Nationals have gone on a hot streak behind pitcher Tanner Roark, winning seven out of the last eight games he's starter.

Rourk gets the nod when the Nats visit the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park Monday. The Nats are -142 faves with a total of 7.5.

Royals sizzling as home faves

The Kansas City Royals have been coming through as home faves recently, posting a spotless 8-0 record against visiting dogs at Kauffman Stadium through Sunday.

The Royals host the New York Yankees Monday. K.C. is currently a -135 favorite with an O/U of 7.5.

Team playing astonishingly strong versus high totals

The Toronto Blue Jays are trying to keep themselves in the American League wild card race and they have been doing well when oddsmakers expect a lot of offense. In the Jays past 13 games with a total of 9.0 or higher, they have a stellar 10-3 record.

Those 13 games has seen the Jays average 6 runs per game and have eight times scored six or higher.

The Blue Jays host the Boston Red Sox with a total of 9.0 Monday.

Pitcher getting beat-up by next opponent

AJ Burnett may be hinting at retirement after seeing his lines against the Washington Nationals this season. The over has paid out in all four of Burnett's starts against the Philadelphia Phillies division rivals.

Burnett was chased in only 1.2 innings in his last start against the Nats giving up five runs. Burnett has given up an average of four runs per game this season against the surging Nationals.

Pirates in good position with this pitcher

Francisco Liriano will take to the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates with a hot streak against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates are 6-1 in Liriano's past seven starts against the Cardinals.

Liriano has held the Cardinals under three runs in five of those seven starts, including twice allowing no runs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Yankees at Royals
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Kansas City Royals (-136, 7.5)

The Kansas City Royals are winners of 24 of their last 31 games and have advanced to the top spot in the American League Central. The New York Yankees, who visit the Royals for a one-game makeup Monday, are winners of four straight as they try to stay in contention for a postseason spot. The Yankees begin a stretch with 22 of the next 31 games against teams owning winning records.

The Yankees needed walk-off wins in two of the three games over the weekend to beat one of the worst teams in the AL in the Chicago White Sox and has not won a series on the road against a current winning team since taking three straight at Seattle from June 10-12. The Royals took two of three from the Yankees from June 6-8 before the finale of the four-game series was postponed until Monday. Kansas City’s offense has scored six or more runs in each of its last seven wins and totaled four home runs over the weekend in Texas.

TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, YES (New York), FSN Kansas City

LINE HISTORY:
The LV Superbook opened the Royals as -136 home favorites. The total opened 7.5.

INJURY REPORT:
Yankees - LF Brett Gardner (Doubtful, ankle). Royals - 1B Eric Hosmer (15-day DL, hand).

POWER RANKINGS:
Yankees (-162), Royals (-185).

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Yankees RH Michael Pineda (2-2, 2.05 ERA) vs. Royals RH James Shields (12-6, 3.28)

Pineda has made two starts since coming off a stint of nearly four months on the disabled list and picked up right where he left off. The 25-year-old held Baltimore and Houston to a total of three runs and six hits in 11 innings but did not factor in the decision in either outing. Pineda is still building his stamina and has yet to record an out in the seventh inning or later this season.

Shields posted his sixth straight quality start Tuesday by holding Colorado to two runs on nine hits in six innings while striking out six. The free agent to be owns 16 strikeouts against three walks in his last three turns and owns a 3.23 ERA in 11 home starts in 2014. Shields faced New York at home June 8 and yielded only an unearned run in six innings while striking out eight to grab a win.

TRENDS:

* Yankees are 4-0 in their last four overall.
* Royals are 8-1 in their last nine home games.
* Under is 5-0-1 in Pineda's last six starts overall.
* Yankees are 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Kansas City.

CONSENSUS:
68 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the Royals.

MLB Early-week betting cheat sheet: Buchholz an Over Machine
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the early-week major-league games:

Tigers, Twins Go Way Over

The Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins completed a high-scoring series in style Sunday, with the Tigers (-138, O 9) romping to a 13-4 road victory and a split of the four-game set. The teams went Over in all four games, scoring a combined 73 runs in the series - an average of better than 18 per contest.

Buchholz an Over Machine

Boston Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz looks to end a season-long trend Monday as he faces the host Toronto Blue Jays (-125, 9). Buchholz has been one of the strongest Over plays of the season at 14-6 overall and 7-2 on the road, thanks in no small part to his 5.94 ERA.

Bumgarner Dodges CarGo

Madison Bumgarner may find things a bit easier than normal Tuesday as he and the San Francisco Giants welcome Colorado to town. Bumgarner has allowed 10 homers in 297 at-bats against members of the Rockies roster, but half have been hit by Carlos Gonzalez, who is out for the season with a knee injury.

Pitching Notes

* Right-hander Chris Tillman will need to be careful with a familiar foe as he leads the host Baltimore Orioles (-132, 8) into Monday's series opener with Tampa Bay. Rays third baseman Evan Longoria has dominated the matchup with Tillman, batting .433 with five homers in 30 at-bats against him.

* New York Yankees righty Brandon McCarthy looks to continue his hot play in the Bronx as he takes the hill Tuesday against the host Detroit Tigers. McCarthy is 5-2 with a 1.90 ERA and is 3-5 O/U in eight starts since being acquired from Arizona just prior to the trade deadline.

Hitting Notes

* St. Louis shortstop Jhonny Peralta will look to resume his dominance against Pittsburgh left-hander Francisco Liriano as the Cardinals (-137, 7) face the host Pirates on Monday night. Peralta is 14-for-42 with two homers, eight walks and a .440 OBP in his career versus Liriano.

* New York Mets first baseman Lucas Duda is heating up heading into Tuesday's series kickoff against the visiting Atlanta Braves. Duda homered twice and drove in five runs Sunday, and has racked up five homers and 11 RBIs over his past six games.

Totals Streak

Texas Rangers (1-5-3 O/U): The Rangers have one of the more interesting totals streaks going, with three pushes in a nine-game span - each a 6-3 Texas loss on a total of nine. Texas is 57-62-10 O/U for the season; the 10 pushes leads the American League.

Prop of the Day

Bettors may want to take a chance on the Rangers and Mariners hitting Monday's total of eight (+900). The Rangers have played to within a run of the total six times in the last nine games, connecting on three of them.

Injury Notes

* Colorado Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario (wrist) will take batting practice Monday and is expected to return to the starting lineup in the coming days. The Rockies are 12-14 SU, 13-10-3 O/U and -133 units for the season with Rosario out of the lineup.

* Boston has placed shortstop Xander Bogaerts on the seven-day concussion list after he was struck in the head Friday. Bogaerts was mired in a 1-for-23 slump prior to the injury, a stretch that dropped his average to .223 for the season.

Weather Watch

* Wind at AT&T Park will blow out to center field at 8 mph for Monday's game between host San Francisco (-174, 7.5) and Colorado. Teams averaged 1.44 home runs under similar conditions in 2013 - slightly above stadium averages - but scoring was down slightly and teams combined to go 22-26-2 O/U.

Could favorable schedule help Royals?

August 25, 2014

Just about everything is going right for the Kansas City Royals these days. They've won 24 of their last 31 games to take over first place in the AL Central.

Even the schedule seems to be breaking their way. The Royals played their last nine games against teams currently in last place - and they'll play 10 of their final 33 against last-place Minnesota, Texas and Boston.

Manager Ned Yost, however, is taking nothing for granted.

''These are the games that `according to the standings' and this and that, these are games you're supposed to come in and win - and that's not always the case,'' Yost said. ''You don't understand the difficulty of coming in and playing a major league game. It's hard to win a major league game.''

The team chasing the Royals in the division can certainly vouch for that. Second-place Detroit had to fight back over the weekend just to salvage a four-game split against the Twins. Minnesota scored 32 runs in the first two games of that series.

According to STATS, the Royals have the easiest schedule in the American League the rest of the way, playing opponents with an aggregate winning percentage of .479. But how significant is that? The Tigers will face teams with a winning percentage of .496, so they'll have a chance to go on a run themselves if they play well enough.

In baseball, there are no gimmes on the schedule - and that's even more true this year, when there's a decent chance nobody will lose 100 games. Texas, which has baseball's worst record, is on pace for 99 defeats. The Twins may be in last place, but they're on pace for 72 wins and just gave Detroit's pitching fits.

And on the flip side, baseball hasn't had a 100-win team since 2011, and nobody is on pace for it this year either. The parity in the game right now is one reason nobody's schedule will be that easy or that hard down the stretch.

For what it's worth, the toughest remaining schedule belongs to Texas - the Rangers can't play against themselves, after all. Their opponents have a .537 winning percentage.

The NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (.467) have the easiest road ahead, but the second-easiest schedule belongs to San Francisco, which trails the Dodgers by 4 1/2 games in the division.

Here are five things to watch around the majors this week:

HOLDING ON?: The Milwaukee Brewers are clinging to a 1 1/2-game lead in the NL Central, but they catch a bit of a break this week because second-place St. Louis will play a three-game series at third-place Pittsburgh. The Brewers will have a chance to gain ground on one or both of those teams.

TATTERED TIGERS: Detroit's starting rotation looked imperious when the Tigers traded for David Price, but injuries to Anibal Sanchez and Justin Verlander left the team in a surprisingly precarious position. Youngsters Robbie Ray and Buck Farmer failed to make it out of the second inning in their starts against the Twins. Verlander is back now, and there's an off day on the schedule Monday, but a doubleheader next weekend against the Chicago White Sox means the Tigers will still have to piece things together.

LAST STAND?: Can the New York Yankees reach the postseason in Derek Jeter's final season? It looked like a longshot, but New York has won four straight to pull within six games of first-place Baltimore in the AL East, and the Yankees are only 3 1/2 games behind Seattle for the second wild card. This week - with a game at Kansas City followed by three at Detroit and three at Toronto - should be telling.

WILD WEST: The Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics have the top two records in baseball, and there's plenty of incentive to win the AL West and avoid the one-game playoff between the league's wild cards. Los Angeles leads by a game after a victory over the A's on Sunday night, and the Angels will host a four-game series between the teams that starts Thursday.

CITY OR STATE?: The Washington Nationals have won 12 of 13 to open an eight-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East. The Nationals will play an interesting interleague series at Seattle starting Friday, but it looks as though Washington will avoid facing Felix Hernandez.

STAT OF THE WEEK

Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel now has a 1.46 ERA for his career, easily the lowest in baseball history for a pitcher with at least 275 innings.

A's lose more than a game

August 25, 2014

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics dealt with a double dose of injuries even before Sunday night's game against Los Angeles.

Derek Norris was the only catcher available, with Stephen Vogt limited to emergency duty and backup John Jaso headed to the seven-day concussion disabled list.

An MRI on closer Sean Doolittle showed a strained right intercostal, and he was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Losing to the Angels 9-4, falling one game behind them in the AL West standings, may have been the least of Oakland's problems.

''It's several guys, key guys in a row with Jed (Lowrie) and (Nick) Punto,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said. ''It's just something else we need to deal with.''

Jaso, who missed most of last season with concussion-like symptoms, said the dizziness and fuzzy eyesight kept getting worst after he was hit in the mask by a foul ball two weeks ago.

''I've been kind of like muscling through the games, just powering through,'' Jaso said. ''But the symptoms escalated a little bit these past few days and it got to the point where it was a little iffy if I could keep going back there behind the plate and catch.''

Oakland made a trade with Texas to bring in catcher Geovany Soto, who has also been limited this year because of injuries. It also acquired minor league catcher Bryan Anderson from the Cincinnati Reds for international money.

''He's been a starting catcher before and he's a two-way guy,'' Melvin said of Soto. ''He's not one you would say is a defensive specialist or just an offensive guy. He's able to do both. And based on the last couple years, going from an everyday role to non-everyday role, knows how to deal with that.''

Dan Otero was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Doolittle's spot.

''I felt it on the second to last pitch last night,'' Doolittle said. ''I took a deep breath and tried to relax enough that I didn't feel it until the follow through on my last pitch. It's a good thing it happened that way because I would not have been able to go on.''

The A's received some relatively good news from Josh Donaldson's pregame MRI, which showed no structural damage to his left knee.

''It's just how he feels,'' Melvin said. ''I wasn't going to play him today no matter what. We'll see how he is tomorrow in Houston.''

TRAINERS ROOM:

Athletics: Doolittle and Jaso are the sixth and seventh A's players on the disabled list, joining INF Kyle Blanks, RHP A.J. Griffin, INF Jed Lowrie, INF Nick Punto and RHP Jerrod Parker. The A's have now used the disabled list 18 times this year after using it 13 all of last year.

ON DECK

Athletics: RHP Jeff Samardzija (3-3, 4.07 ERA) takes the mound in Houston on Monday night. His five wins against the Astros are his most against any team.

BREAKING OUT

The A's managed four hits against Angels starter Jered Weaver through the first six innings. They got that many in the seventh against him, including a two-run homer from Alberto Callaspo and a solo shot from Andy Parrino. Eric Sogard added a sacrifice fly against Jason Grilli.

BY THE NUMBERS

Oakland LHP Scott Kazmir matched his season high for hits (10) and runs (seven) in three-plus innings of work. ''It was just location. I maybe hit one spot the whole game,'' Kazmir said. ''There were times I felt I could take control of the game, get two strikes on a guy and then throw one right down the middle. I felt like I wasn't aggressive enough.'' . The A's were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Bartolo Colon cleared waivers, can be traded anywhere, just not sure the Angels have any minor league players the Mets would want.

-- USC CB Josh Shaw sprained both ankles jumping from a second story balcony to save his 7-year old nephew, who was drowning. Quite a hero.

-- Eldrick Woods fired his swing coach; when you're not going to be playing for a while, no sense in paying a swing coach.

-- Shin-Soo Choo needs elbow surgery, is done for the year; Rangers are running out of players- their season has been a total disaster.

-- Giancarlo Stanton is 12th player ever with 150+ homers by age 24; wait til he plays his home games in a smaller park, once he leaves Miami.

-- Arizona cut veteran kicker Jay Feely, who got beat out by Christian Catanzaro, a rookie from Clemson. Takes onions to go with a rookie kicker.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

13) Is Russell Wilson a top 10 NFL QB? Well if he is, he’s better than at least three of these 12 guys, plus a few others-- you make the call.

Brees
Rodgers
Romo
Newton
Brady
Rivers
Roethlisberger
Flacco
PManning
Stafford
Foles
Luck

12) Major League Baseball needs to announce who in New York City is reviewing these instant replays and making important decisions; in other words, teams need to know who is hosing them on close replay reviews. Maybe they do know, but I’d like to know, too.

11) Peyton Manning has 491 TD passes, needs 18 more to pass Brett Favre for #1 on the all-time list. He’ll have it before Columbus Day.

10) The catch Marlins’ SS Adeiny Hechevarria made in short centerfield in the 12th inning Saturday was a great, great play that saved the game at the time for the Marlins, who later lost the game, but this was a great play. If other shortstops loved by the media ever made a play half this good to save a game, they’d be showing it on Sports Center for the next decade.

9) Rams-Browns game has yet to be re-run on NFL Network because Browns' TV violated some rule about virtual advertising on the broadcast, so the network wouldn’t use their telecast as a re-run. Supposedly they’re going to air the Rams’ broadcast later this week. Curious to see Austin Davis play; think he could help the Rams at QB, down the road.

8) Northern California wine industry took a hit this weekend with 6.1 earthquake, biggest one in that area since the ’89 quake that happened during the World Series. Over a hundred people were injured this weekend.

7) Angels acquired Gordon Beckham from the White Sox to play third base, a position he hadn’t played since 2009. A’s traded for Geovany Soto because John Jaso is having concussion problems again and Steven Vogt can’t catch right now because of a foot problem.

6) I love statistics, but I’m not fond of WAR as a one-stop shopping kind of player evaluator tool. There are too many intangibles, too much of a human element in the game to rely on one number to define a player’s worth. Player might be terrific on the field, but his teammates hate the guy- that stuff doesn’t factor in and it can’t possibly, but it could be important. There will always be a gray area where instinct has to be used to evaluate, whether the Ivy League alums like it or not.

5) Lines on Ohio State football games swung anywhere from 4.5 to 7 points because of Braxton Miller’s injury; lines on Ram games have dropped only a couple points after Sam Bradford’s injury. NFL teams generally have higher quality subs and better coaching to make up for injuries, and some of that is now wishful thinking on my part, but I do think it is true.

4) Speaking of Sam Bradford, he’ll have banked $65M in his first five NFL seasons, while playing only 49 of a possible 80 games, zero in the playoffs. Good luck with your next team, sir. He’s a good guy, just not a durable one.

3) Say what you want about Eli Manning, but every Sunday at 1:00 he takes the field and that is an important quality. Durability might not be a skill per se, but if you have it, it’s a huge plus.

2) Arizona State’s PG Jahii Carson left college early because he thought he was an NBA player, but now the young man has gone to Australia to start his pro career. If he had stayed in Tempe another year and really improved his skills, say shooting, would that have made him an NBA player? He’s making money now so good for him, but you wonder if cheated himself by leaving ASU early.

1) NFL and DirecTV are close to re-upping their deal for the Sunday Ticket, at $1.3B or $1.4B a year, for the next 6-8 years. Now we need DirecTV to add the Pac-12 Network; for what we pay for their service, its not too much to ask.
