Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Ohio State QB Braxton Miller re-injured his throwing shoulder; his status for this season is unclear right now.

-- RIP Don Pardo; the former Jeopardy! announcer passed away at age 96.

-- NFL practice squads are expected to go up from eight to ten players.

-- Nationals 5, Arizona 4 (11)-- Washington's 3rd straight walk-off win.

-- Braves 7, Pirates 3-- Six straight losses for struggling Pittsburgh, who at least get Andrew McCutchen back tonight.

-- Redskins 24, Browns 23-- Is Johnny Manziel an attention junkie? He cannot be stupid enough to think he can give the finger to the other team in the middle of the field on national TV and not have it become a big thing.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing somr thinking out loud.......

13) Last season, NFL games had an average of 105.6 penalty yards; in two weeks of exhibition games this summer, there have been 164.3 penalty yards per game, as back judges need a whirlpool for their throwing arms with so many flags getting tossed. No one pays to watch officials; league office better be careful regular season games don’t become flagfests. Makes for bad TV, no bueno.

12) Thinking about rookie QB’s starting in the NFL; Steve McNair only started six games in his first couple years with the Oilers/Titans, thought it served him well to watch veteran Chris Chandler play. Teams would be well-advised to being their young QB’s along gradually. I’d even have a young QB play Arena Football for a year, to get them used to the faster pace of the pro game.

11) How do Kyle Shanahan and Lane Kiffin keep getting prime jobs?

10) Read on SI.com Monday that 31 million people play fantasy football. 31 million. That’s a lot of preview magazines and draft kits. Big business.

9) Atlanta LT Sam Baker is out for the year; first-round pick Jordan Matthews will take his place. Baker’s father used to be commissioner of the Arena Football. Matthews’ dad is NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, but Baker’s dad (6-foot-9) is bigger. Go figure.

8) Oregon Ducks need basketball players this year, due to some off-court problems they’ve had which cost them some players; they got a good one this week in 6-6 Dillon Brooks from Findlay Prep in Las Vegas. Young man moved up a year to the Class of 2014 to sign up with the Ducks and be eligible to play this fall. Oregon still has only ten scholarship players.

7) Vanderbilt announced that two kids won’t be coming back next year because of off-court concerns, players who scored 8.0 and 5.4 ppg. Wonder if those two kids had scored 18.0 and 15.4 ppg if those concerns would be as troubling?

6) Serious question: If you’re an NFL coach whose team is playing on Monday Night Football and you’re playing the Redskins, do you mind that you have to have a production meeting with Jon Gruden, whose brother coaches the Redskins? Are there ethical concerns there that Gruden might leak some secrets to his brother?

5) Had never heard until last week that the father of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was a standout coach himself, but had a heart attack during a game and died on the way to the hospital. Team he helped coach was playing against the team his oldest son coached. Awful story; wonder if Bob Stoops ever thought about doing something other than coaching?

4) Kid named Austin Hatch will play basketball for Michigan this fall; he has survived not one, but two airplane crashes in his young life. Will be an inspiration for many when he takes the court for the first time this fall.

3) Arizona Cardinals lost standout DT Darnell Dockett (knee) for the year.

2) Seattle Seahawks are teaching a "tackling strike zone" where players can tackle an opponent without getting a penalty; Pete Carroll has done a video on the subject and lot of high school/youth teams are using it as a teaching tool..

1) Yu Darvish has three years, $31M left on his contract; he cleared waivers and can now be traded to any team. Question is, how healthy is he?

Thunderstorms expected in Chicago

Both the Chicago Cubs and White Sox are in action in their home parks Tuesday evening, but according to weather forecasts, rain is expected to hit both stadiums leading up to the first pitch.

There is a 40-50 percent possibility of scattered thunderstorms over the Chicago area Tuesday afternoon and into the evening. It should subside shortly thereafter the scheduled start of both these games.

The Cubs host the San Francisco Giants as slight -103 home dogs, while the Pale Hose are small -106 home faves with the Baltimore Orioles in town.

Pirates' CF Andrew McCutchen, questionable Tuesday

McCutchen is on the 15-day disabled list due to a fractured rib and damaged cartilage around the fracture. He has began taking part in baseball activities and could be activated before Tuesday's game against the Braves.

Game of the Day: Angels at Red Sox
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox (129,9)

Los Angeles Angels standout Mike Trout arrived in Boston with one hit in his previous five games but the sight of Fenway Park awoke him from his slumber. Trout collected a pair of hits and an RBI to improve to 15-for-32 in seven career games in Boston as the Angels won the opener of a four-game series against the Red Sox. Los Angeles right-hander Jered Weaver will be out to avenge a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Boston and Allen Webster 11 days ago in Tuesday's matchup.

The Angels, winners of five of six overall, moved to 7-2 in their last nine at Fenway to take a half-game lead in the American League West. Josh Hamilton, who has five hits and 18 strikeouts in his last 38 at-bats, could return to their starting lineup after sitting out the past two games - the first per his own request. While Los Angeles owns the best record in the majors, the Red Sox continue to stumble at Fenway Park - dropping eight of their last 11 at home.

TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), NESN (Boston)

LINE HISTORY:
Station Casinos opened the Red Sox as +130 home dogs. The total has opened at 9.

INJURY WATCH:
Angels: LF Grant Green (Out, Back) Red Sox: 2B Dustin Pedroia (Questionable, Illness), C David Ross (Questionable, Foot)

POWER RANKINGS:
Angels (-201), Red Sox (-117)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Angels RH Jered Weaver (13-7, 3.66 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Allen Webster (3-1, 4.79)

Weaver had a nine-start unbeaten streak snapped by Boston on Aug. 8, when he surrendering four runs and seven hits over six innings to drop to 4-6 lifetime in 15 career starts against the Red Sox. Weaver bounced back to limit Philadelphia to two runs over six innings on Wednesday to improve to 6-1 in his last 11 turns. Former teammate Mike Napoli has tormented Weaver, collecting 10 hits and hitting three homers in 29 at-bats.

Webster has won his last two starts, although Boston's offense bailed him out of a four-run deficit in a victory over Houston last time out. He had his best outing of the season against the Angels earlier this month, allowing two runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings. The biggest issue for the hard-throwing Webster is control, or lack thereof - he has walked 16 and struck out only 10 over 20 2/3 innings in his four starts.

TRENDS:

*Angels are 7-1 in Weavers last 8 starts with 5 days of rest.
*Red Sox are 1-4 in Websters last 5 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
*Over is 8-2 in Websters last 10 starts on grass.
*Over is 6-1 in Weavers last 7 road starts vs. Red Sox.

CONSENSUS:
61 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the Angels.

MLB Early-week betting cheat sheet: Brewers doing AL-right
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the early-week major-league games:

Rocky Mountain High?

The Colorado Rockies (-103, O 9.5) may be back to their old selves after posting a 10-5 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon. Colorado scored 29 runs while taking three of four from the Reds, and are 4-1 O/U over their last five games.

Seattle Struggling as Road Fave

The Seattle Mariners (-156, 8.5) will try to buck a disheartening recent trend - and strengthen their American League wild-card chances - as they visit Philadelphia on Monday. The Mariners are just 1-4 in their last five games as a road fave dating back to early July.

Brewers Digging Interleague Play

The Milwaukee Brewers resume interleague play Tuesday night as they open a series with the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. Milwaukee is an impressive 10-8 against American League foes so far in 2014 after going a combined 18-32 in interleague action the previous three seasons.

Pitching Notes

* Chris Sale has been solid as a heavy favorite this season - a trend he hopes to continue Monday as he leads the Chicago White Sox (-149, 7) against visiting Baltimore. Sale is 10-1 as a fave of -148 or better, with his only loss coming August 6 at -225 versus the Texas Rangers.

* It has been a tale of two halves for Cincinnati Reds hurler Alfredo Simon, who gets the call Tuesday night against host St. Louis. Simon went 12-3 with a 2.70 ERA before the All-Star break, but is just 0-5 with an unsightly 5.46 ERA in six starts since.

Hitting Notes

* Luis Valbuena may be the Chicago Cubs' secret weapon Monday as they tangle with the host New York Mets (-131, 6.5). Valbuena has a pair of home runs and three RBIs in five career at-bats against the Mets' Monday starter, Bartolo Colon.

* Ben Zobrist will have his hands full Tuesday night as he and the Tampa Bay Rays host Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers. Zobrist is just 2-for-18 with a home run in his career versus Scherzer, including an 0-for-4 showing in their last encounter July 3 in Detroit.

Totals Streak

Los Angeles Angels (2-8 O/U): The Angels have made low-scoring close games a habit, putting together an impressive string of Unders while seeing five of their last seven contests decided by a single run. Los Angeles is 59-58-5 O/U for the season.

Prop of the Day

Bettors may want to add some runs to the Royals-Twins total Monday; they'll get +210 for a total of 10.5. The Royals rank first in the majors this month in runs (81) and batting average (.280), with the Twins right behind them in both categories (80, .277).

Injury Notes

* Tampa Bay outfielder David DeJesus hopes to continue his minor-league rehab assignment Wednesday after soreness in his fractured left hand forced him to take a break. The Rays are 33-18 SU, 20-27-4 O/U and +1,179 units with DeJesus on the sidelines.

* Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips (thumb) had two hits in his final minor-league rehab assignment Sunday and will be in the Cincinnati lineup Monday. The Reds went 12-21 SU, 15-17-1 O/U and -1,118 units with Phillips out of action.

Weather Watch

* Wind at U.S. Cellular Field will blow in from left field at 11 mph for the game between the host White Sox and Baltimore. Teams combined to hit .267 with 1.80 home runs in five games under similar conditions in 2013 - slightly above stadium averages.

Umpire Note of the Day

The road team is 8-2 in umpire Adrian Johnson's last 10 games behind home plate. Johnson will be calling the balls and strikes for Monday's game between the Cubs and the Mets.

Kerwin Danley behind the plate in Philadelphia Tuesday

Kerwin Danley - one of the top Under umpires in Major League Baseball - will be behind the plate in Philadelphia as the Phillies host the Seattle Mariners in interleague action Tuesday evening.

The Over/Under count is 4-19 (82.6 percent) in Danley's 23 games where he's been tasked with calling balls and strikes. Only Tony Randazzo and his 2-12 O/U (85.7 percent) record yields a superior winning percentage on Under bets.

There is an average of just 5.8 runs scored per game when Danley is behind the plate - the lowest among umpires with at least 10 games behind the dish.

Danley was last behind the plate on Saturday, Aug. 16 when the New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2, finishing below the closing total of 7.

Oddsmakers have tabbed the game with a total of seven. A.J. Burnett is slated to start for the Phils while Hisashi Iwakuma gets the ball for the visiting Mariners.

Under bets have cashed when these two clubs meet

Heading into Tuesday's matchup, the Under is 6-0 in the previous six meetings between the New York Yankees and Houston Astros.

The two clubs played a three-game series earlier this season in April and a three-game series last season in September - both in Houston - to compile the hot Under streak.

The opener of a three-game series goes Tuesday evening at Yankee Stadium and oddsmakers have placed a total of 8.5 on the game.

Probable starters in the game are lefty Brett Oberholtzer for the Astros and fellow southpaw Chris Capuano for the Yankees.

This club is ice cold away from home

Life on the road has not been kind to the Atlanta Braves as of late. In their last nine games away from Turner Field, the Braves are an ugly 1-8.

Bettors need to take note of that trend when they face off against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park Tuesday. The Bucs are currently -143 faves with an Over/Under of 7.5.

Over bettors profiting when Weaver visits Fenway

When Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jered Weaver gets the ball against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, high totals tend to follow. The Over is a red-hot 6-1 in the veteran's last seven starts in Beantown, and he'll be on the hill once again when the Halos battle the BoSox Tuesday evening at the iconic ballpark.

Allen Webster gets the start for the Red Sox. The Angels are presently -122 favorites on the moneyline with a total of nine.

Nationals dominant when Strasburg is favored

The surging Washington Nationals have won seven in a row and are poised to win their eighth when they send ace Stephen Strasburg takes the hill Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Nationals are 6-0 in Strasburg's last six starts as a favorite of -201 or greater and are 8-1 in his last nine starts against a team with a losing record.

Tonight in Washington the Nationals are currently -226 favorites.

Important betting trend you need to know

When the Detroit Tigers have been faced with low totals by oddsmakers, they've been coming through in a big way for bettors backing the Under. In their previous 10 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower, the Under is a sizzling 9-1.

The line for Detroit's matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays presently lists the Tiers as -121 faves with an Over/Under of 6.5. Max Scherzer gets the nod for Detroit while Chris Archer counters for the Rays.

Giants keep producing W's behind Vogelsong

If you've been backing the San Francisco Giants with Ryan Vogelsong on the mound recently, you've been profiting in a big way. San Fran is a scorching-hot 8-1 in Vogelsong's last nine outings, and he'll be on the mound again when the Giants take on the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field Tuesday.

Tsuyoshi Wada takes the bump for the Cubbies. San Francisco is presently slight -106 faves on the moneyline with a total of eight.

Which team has gone a perfect 7-0 on the Under?

The Cleveland Indians have been participating in a lot of low-scoring affairs lately - each of their last seven games have gone under the total - making them the hottest Under club in baseball.

The Tribe will visit the Minnesota Twins at Target Field Tuesday. Cleveland is presently -107 favorites with a total of 8.5 for the AL Central matchup.

Find out which team owns an ugly record as road dogs

When the Cincinnati Reds have been listed as underdogs away from Great American Ball Park as of late, they've dropped 12 out of their last 14 games.

That's a troubling trend for Reds backers as they're currently listed as +153 road dogs for their matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium Tuesday. The total for the game is presently 7.5.

Orioles punishing lowly teams

The AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles have set themselves up nicely for the stretch run to the MLB playoffs, which has included winning a lot of games against lesser competition over that span.

The O's are 7-1 in their last eight games versus teams with sub .500 records - a good omen for their backers since they'll take on the Chicago White Sox (59-66) at U.S. Cellular Field Tuesday.

Baltimore is currently -107 faves with a total of 8.5.

Who's Not Hot - AL

August 18, 2014

The plot continues to thicken as we race towards the playoffs in MLB betting action. However, there are some teams that are lagging behind in the American League, all of which were in the playoffs last season.

The three teams haven't changed at the bottom of the AL, but have they gotten any closer?

Texas Rangers (48-76, -$2,972) – In a word for Texas? No. Things aren't getting any better, and they aren't going to get any better. Forget about all of the injuries. Even the men who are playing are playing lousy ball. SS Elvis Andrus, a man who could be counted upon for a .300 average every season, is batting just .272 with 61 runs scored. OF Shin-Soo Choo, a man who figured to kill the ball in the hot air of Arlington, has just 12 homers for the season and is batting .241, and he has struck out 127 times already in 439 at bats. RHP Yu Darvish has been battling injuries, but he is only 10-7 with a 3.06 ERA, numbers which just aren't what we are used to seeing. Manager Ron Washington very well could pay the price for as bad as this year has been.

Boston Red Sox (56-67, -$2,158) – Did you really expect things to get better for the Red Sox after they traded away all of their pitchers? The last time we addressed who was cold in the American League, Boston featured a rotation with Jon Lester, John Lackey, Clay Buchholz, Felix Doubront, and Jake Peavy. Now, the rotation features Rubby De La Rosa, Brandon Workman, Joe Kelly, Allen Webster, and Buchholz. Yikes. The Red Sox underwent a 10-hour period like no team we have ever seen in the bigs with all of the trades that they made to various contending teams, and though we believe that they are setup well for 2015, the rest of this year is probably going to be a disaster without any legitimate starting pitching.

Tampa Bay Rays (61-63, -$1,668) – We give the Rays all sorts of credit. They sold their biggest asset at the trade deadline in LHP David Price, and at least in the immediate, they basically only got back LHP Drew Smyly. Don't get us wrong. We're big time Smyly believers. But he's not David Price. That said, Tampa Bay managed to become the first team in baseball history to improve from 18-games under .500 to get back to the .500 mark at 61-61. That said, two straight losses feel like they have taken the air out of this team just a bit. If the Rays can figure this out and get into the playoffs this year in spite of the bad start to the season and in spite of the fact that they traded away Price, both GM Andrew Friedman and manager Joe Maddon should be enshrined into the Hall of Fame right now. Of the three teams on this list, Tampa Bay is the one with the best shot of getting off of it by the end of the year, but the team is still over nine units away from the closest team, the Detroit Tigers (-$747).

Game of the Day: Braves at Pirates
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Pittsburgh Pirates (-117, 7)

Gerrit Cole makes his return to the Pittsburgh Pirates rotation Wednesday when he leads his club into the finale of a three-game series against the visiting Atlanta Braves. Cole has been sidelined with a right lat strain since throwing five scoreless innings against Philadelphia on July 4. His return comes at a challenging time for the Pirates, who have lost seven in a row and are two games out in the race for the second National League wild-card spot.

Atlanta is heading in the other direction, taking the first two games of the series by an 18-6 margin to push its winning streak to five games. The Braves moved into a tie with San Francisco for the second wild card while staying six behind Washington in the NL East. Left fielder Justin Upton has been fueling the charge, hitting .421 with three home runs and eight RBIs during the five-game run.

TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, SportSouth (Atlanta), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

LINE HISTORY:
The Pirates opened as -125 home favorites and have been bet down to -117. The run total is currently at 7.0.

INJURY WATCH:
Braves - RP Shae Simmons (15-day DL, shoulder). Pirates - CF Andrew McCutchen (Questionable, ribs), SS Clint Barmes (Late August, groin), SP Gerrit Cole (Probably, back).

POWER RANKINGS:
Braves (-165), Pirates (-156).

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Braves LH Alex Wood (9-9, 3.07 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (7-4, 3.78)

Wood won his second straight start Friday against Oakland, limiting the Athletics to two runs and four hits in six innings. He had just one strikeout, a season low as a starter, after fanning 12 in 7 1/3 innings five days earlier against Washington. The 23-year-old has a 2.84 ERA in 17 starts this season.

Cole tossed seven scoreless frames while throwing 92 pitches in his final rehab start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday. He failed to get through six innings in each of his final three major-league starts prior to the injury. Cole, who has never faced Atlanta, is 3-1 with a 3.56 ERA in seven home starts.

TRENDS:

* Braves are 5-0 in the last five meetings.
* Under is 26-8-1 in the last 35 meetings in Pittsburgh.
* Under is 46-21-4 in the last 71 meetings.
* Pirates are 0-7 in their last seven games overall.

CONSENSUS:
Fifty-four percent of wagers are on the Braves at +108.
