Giants struggling with Hudson starting at home

The San Francisco Giants are 0-4 in their last four ball games at home when right-hander Tim Hudson gets the start.

Hudson is scheduled to get the start at AT&T Park against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies Saturday afternoon.

In those four ball games, the Giants have lost to the San Diego Padres (-119), Cincinnati Reds (-119), Oakland A's (+100) and Pittsburgh Pirates (-117).

The Giants are currently big -201 home faves for the meeting with the Phillies.

Thunderstorms could impact this ball game Saturday

The Kansas City Royals and their backers will look to make it four-straight wins Saturday, but Mother Nature could have the last word in their game versus the Minnesota Twins.

According to DailyBaseballData.com, weather forecasts are calling for a 40 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms by the start of the game, and that will increase to a 50 percent chance as the game progresses.

As it stands, the Royals are slight -106 road faves at Target Field and oddsmakers have placed a total of 7.5 on the game.

Top Under umpire working the plate Saturday

With an Over/Under record of 4-18 when he's been tasked with calling balls and strikes this season, you'd be hard pressed to find an umpire that has catered to Under bettors more efficiently than Kerwin Danley.

Danley is scheduled to work home plate at Tropicana Field as the Tampa Bay Rays host the New York Yankees Saturday afternoon. Oddsmakers have tabbed the matchup with a total of seven.

When looking at umpires that worked behind home plate in at least 10 ball games this season, only Tony Randazzo has better winning percentage for Under bettors (2-11 O/U, 84.6 percent).

According to our umpire stats database, there is an average of 5.78 runs scored per game when Danley is working the plate. That's the lowest per game total of any umpire with at least 10 games calling pitches.

Danley has already cashed in for Under bettors this week. He was calling balls and strikes at Turner Field as the Atlanta Braves lost 4-2 to the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, which closed with a total of eight.

Robinson Cano, Seattle - Prob Sat

Cano left Friday's game after fouling a ball off of his foot but is expected to play Saturday against the Tigers.

Randazzo umpiring Hernandez-Price duel Saturday

We've been following Kerwin Danley's penchant for cashing Under bettors' tickets this season, but there is one umpire that has a better winning percentage for under wagers for umpires with at least 10 games behind the dish: Tony Randazzo.

Randazzo has an Over/Under record of 2-11 in his 13 ball games behind home plate this season. That's good enough for an 84.6 winning percentage if a bettor had taken the Under in all 13 of those games.

He'll be tasked with calling balls and strikes as the Seattle Mariners visit the Detroit Tigers with a couple of marquee pitchers toeing the rubber Saturday. Felix Hernandez is scheduled to get the start for the Mariners while David Price is slated to pitch for the Tigers.

The game currently has a total of 6.5.

MLB Week-end betting cheat sheet: Toronto feeling blue
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend's major-league games:

Toronto Feeling Blue

The Toronto Blue Jays' recent road woes continued Wednesday, as they dropped a 2-0 decision to the Seattle Mariners, to cap a demoralizing three-game sweep. The Blue Jays have scored just eight runs during a six-game road losing skid that has dropped their overall value to +273 units for the season. They begin a three-game set with at the Chicago White Sox (+129, 8.5) Friday.

Rays Rolling With the Under

The Tampa Bay Rays remain one of the strongest under plays in the league over the past 10 days as they prepare to open a three-game series against the visiting New York Yankees (+122, 7). Tampa went 1-2-1 over/under in its four-game series in Texas and went 2-6-2 O/U on its 10-game road swing.

Felix vs. Price? Expect low score

Expect a great Under play at any total Saturday when Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners visit David Price and the Detroit Tigers. Hernandez has gone seven innings while allowing two or fewer runs in 17-straight starts, while Price had a string of 13 consecutive quality starts snapped in Toronto.

Fister Flying

Washington Nationals right-hander Doug Fister has been nearly automatic over the past month and a half as he leads the Washington Nationals into Sunday's tilt with the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. Fister is 7-2 straight up over his last nine starts while giving up no fewer than three runs in any of those outings.

Pitching Notes

* Godspeed, Milwaukee. The Brewers face a monumental task Saturday night as they square off with Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who is 14-2 with a 1.78 ERA and is 16-3 SU over his 19 starts so far this season.

* Oakland Athletics lefty Jon Lester will look to make it four straight wins with his new team Sunday as he takes on the host Atlanta Braves. Lester has won each of his first three starts in an Oakland uniform, posting a 2.49 ERA while allowing zero home runs over that stretch.

Hitting Notes

* Houston Astros slugger Chris Carter has been a hard man to keep down over the past week as he prepares to face Clay Buchholz and the host Boston Red Sox (-142, 8.5). Carter has swatted four home runs and racked up 10 RBIs over the past seven days - tops in the league over that stretch.

* Don't expect many long bombs in Saturday's Mariners-Tigers tilt - especially from the Seattle lineup. Price has allowed just one home run in 169 combined at-bats against members of the Mariners' roster; that homer came courtesy second baseman Robinson Cano.

* Joe Mauer will face a friendly foe Sunday when the Minnesota Twins entertain Jeremy Guthrie and the Kansas City Royals. Mauer is 8-for-24 lifetime versus Guthrie, with two home runs and an OPS over 1.000.

Totals Streak

Baltimore Orioles (4-0-1 O/U): The Orioles finally settled for a push in their last game - a 5-3 victory over the Yankees - after putting together four straight overs on the strength of three double-digit scoring outbursts. The recent Over string moves Baltimore to 53-63-3 O/U for the season.

Injury Notes

* Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Neil Walker may be back in the lineup Friday against the host Washington Nationals (-148, 7) after missing the previous eight games with a back injury. The Pirates have gone 5-3 SU, 5-3 O/U and +195 units with Walker out of action.

* Colorado Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer will be activated from the disabled list in time for Saturday's game against visiting Cincinnati. Cuddyer has missed the past 59 games with a fractured shoulder; the Rockies are 18-42 SU, 27-24-8 O/U and -2,153 units without him.

Weather Watch

* Fans at Fenway Park will see wind blowing out to center field at 6 mph when the host Boston Red Sox face Houston on Saturday night. Teams went 1-5 O/U in six games with the wind blowing out to center in 2013, averaging just 1.5 homers - well below the stadium average of 1.85.

Umpire Note of the Day

The home team is 5-1 in umpire Cory Blaser's last six games calling balls and strikes. Blaser will be behind home plate Friday night when the Red Sox entertain the Astros.

This pitcher is dynamite on grass fields

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick has been a fantastic play for Over bettors on grass in recent matchups, evidenced by seven of his last eight starts on the natural surface going above the total.

Kendrick gets the ball when the Phils visit the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park - a grass field - Saturday. The Giants are currently -201 faves on the moneyline with an O/U of 7.5.

Over bets fare well with hitters' wind at this park

According to DailyBaseballData.com, forecasts are calling for hitters' wind blowing out toward center field at 13 mph at Citi Field as the New York Mets host the Chicago Cubs Saturday evening.

According to our MLB Stadiums data page, the Mets' games have posted a 4-1 Over/Under record when wind blows out to center field at Cifi Field.

Oddsmakers have tabbed the game with a total of 7.5. Dan Straily is slated to get the ball for the Cubs, while Jon Niese is scheduled to start for the Mets.

Hernandez dominant in career versus Tigers

With Felix Hernandez and David Price on the mound, Saturday's Seattle Mariners-Detroit Tigers matchup boasts one of the best pitching duels of the season.

But the Mariners ace has been a dominant force in his 13 career starts versus the Tigers. "King" Felix is 9-2 with a 2.51 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, while notching 86 strikeouts in 86 innings in those 13 starts.

Saturday's start will be his first versus the Tigers this season. He lasted eight innings allowing five hits and one earned run in a no-decision, a game which the Mariners lost 2-1.

Hernandez and the Mariners are currently -110 favorites in the game. The total is 6.5.

Right-handed pitching creating headaches for Braves

The Atlanta Braves' struggles over the past month have been well documented, but there's one particular area they're getting dominated: right-handed pitching. In their last 12 games versus right-handed starters, the Braves are an ugly 2-10.

They'll face off against righty Scott Gray and the Oakland A's at Turner Field Saturday. The Braves are presently -108 faves on the moneyline with an O/u of 6.5 for the interleague matchup.

Check out this ump stat before placing your bets

The Colorado Rockies will not be pleased to see umpire Dale Scott behind the plate for their matchup against the Cincinnati Reds at Coors Field Saturday. In the Rockies' last six games with Scott calling balls and strikes, the Rox are a paltry 0-6.

Colorado is currently listed as -138 home faves with an Over/Under of 10.

Saturday's NFL Week 2 preseason betting primer
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday marks the busiest day of the NFL's second week of exhibition action, with half the league taking the field. Here's a look at betting notes for the eight games scheduled for Saturday:

Green Bay Packers at St. Louis Rams (-2.5, 43)

* The battle for the fifth and final wide receiver job in Green Bay could very well come down to whichever of the contenders performs better Saturday afternoon; Myles Whyte, Chris Harper, Jeff Janis, Kevin Dorsey and Alex Gillett are all in the hunt. The Packers are expected to have running back Eddie Lacy make his preseason debut; he appeared in his first exhibition game against the Rams a year ago and ran for 40 yards on just eight carries.

* Quarterback Sam Bradford will see his first game action in nearly 10 months Saturday, with head coach Jeff Fisher predicting that Bradford would see at least a quarter of action - and possibly more. The Rams are expected to give running back Zac Stacy more work than the four carries he saw last week - though St. Louis didn't really need him, erupting for 150 yards on 32 carries in a 26-24 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

New York Jets at Cincinnati Bengals (-3, 41.5)

* Geno Smith and New York's first-team offense will play the entire first half against the Bengals, according to head coach Rex Ryan; Michael Vick will also see time under center, as will sixth-round pick Tajh Boyd, who will play ahead of Matt Simms. The Jets have won four of their last preseason games overall after dropping their previous five - including all four they played in 2012.

* Head coach Marvin Lewis told reporters that quarterback Andy Dalton will likely see between 15-25 snaps against the Jets; Dalton saw 22 and 23 snaps, respectively, in the second preseason game the last two seasons. Cincinnati will likely take it easy with its starters Saturday, as it begins a stretch of three games in 12 days that wraps up Aug. 28 against the visiting Indianapolis Colts.

Baltimore Ravens at Dallas Cowboys (+1, 42.5)

* Veteran tight end Owen Daniels hasn't practiced since Monday as he deals with nagging leg soreness, and his status for Saturday night's game remains up in the air. A sprained ankle suffered by Asa Jackson - who had an interception in Baltimore's exhibition opener - has left the nickel back position wide open entering Saturday, with Chykie Brown and Dominique Franks expected to vie for playing time in Jackson's absence.

* Quarterback Tony Romo will see his first game action since undergoing back surgery in late-December; he's expected to be eased back in after participating in only 11 of the team's 16 scheduled practices - and avoiding practices on back-to-back days. Romo is expected to have his usual cast of characters against the Ravens, including running back DeMarco Murray, wide receiver Dez Bryant and tight end Jason Witten.

New York Giants at Indianapolis Colts (-2, 41.5)

* The Giants' secondary will face a major test against Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, but come in with positive momentum as the starters have yet to allow a passing touchdown through their first two preseason games. Quarterback Eli Manning has yet to really air it out - his longest throw of the preseason has been for just 10 yards - but head coach Tom Coughlin says looking for a deep strike isn't something he'll force against the Colts.

* The Colts' backfield will be a little more robust in the team's second exhibition game, with safety LaRon Landry and cornerback Vontae Davis expected to play versus the Giants after being limited by groin injuries. Luck and the first-team offense is expected to see up to 25 plays against New York, with receiver T.Y. HIlton expected to suit up despite missing a pair of practices this week.

Buffalo Bills at Pittsburgh Steelers (-2.5, 40.5)

* After receiving rave reviews from coaches and teammates - highlighted by receiver Mike Williams' assertion that Thursday's practice was "the best I've ever seen him," quarterback E.J. Manuel is expected to see plenty of time Saturday against the Steelers. He'll look to improve a scuffling Buffalo first-team offense that has managed just two field goals in five possessions through two exhibition games.

* The Steelers are expected to give all three of its prominent running backs playing time, though it's anybody's guess as to how Le'Veon Bell, LeGarrette Blount and rookie Dri Archer will be used against the Bills. Pittsburgh has been one of the worst teams in the preseason over the past season-plus, losing five straight exhibition games after going 19-6 over their previous 25 preseason contests.

Miami Dolphins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5, 37.5)

* It isn't clear whether running back Knowshon Moreno (knee) will make his Dolphins debut against the Buccaneers, but he hasn't been full speed yet in practice and is expected to sit out at least another week. His absence will likely mean a decent workload for expected Week 1 starter Lamar Miller, who has reportedly looked sensational in camp.

* The focus on the Tampa Bay side of the ball will be on the progress of rookie wide receiver Mike Evans, who has looked inconsistent so far in training camp and will need to earn the No. 2 receiver job opposite Vincent Jackson. Last week's shoddy performance against the Jaguars has prompted coach Lovie Smith to shake up the offensive line, highlighted by the demotion of Jamon Meredith from the starting right guard spot.

Atlanta Falcons at Houston Texans (-3, 40.5)

* Star wide receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones were given Thursday off to rest ahead of Saturday's tilt with the Texans; while White is expected to see the field, head coach Mike Smith hasn't said whether Jones - recovering from a major foot injury - would join him. The first team offense, led by quarterback Matt Ryan, is expected to play the entire first half in Houston.

* No. 1 quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick isn't in danger of losing his Week 1 starting job. but could use a better performance Saturday than the one he posted in Houston's exhibition opener against the Arizona Cardinals (6-for-14, 55 yards, two interceptions.) Eyes will also be on No. 1 pick Jadeveon Clowney, who looked solid in his debut but will need to work on his drop-back coverage versus the Texans.

Arizona Cardinals at Minnesota Vikings (-3, 39.5)

* Starting Cardinals tight end John Carlson is expected to see action against the team that released him back in March, but he likely won't play for long as Arizona looks to keep him fresh - and concussion-free - for the start of the regular season. Backup quarterback candidate Ryan Lindley may be playing for his spot on the roster; he's expected to see the majority of the second half.

* Fans hoping to see running back Adrian Peterson will be disappointed yet again, as the Vikings are expected to rest him until the start of the regular season - just as they have every year since 2011. The quarterback battle between Matt Cassel and Teddy Bridgewater will once again take center stage Saturday, with Cassel playing the opening half and Bridgewater expected to play the majority of the final two quarters.

Braves go for sweep

August 16, 2014

Oakland at Atlanta

First pitch: Sunday, 8:10 p.m. ET

Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Athletics -135, Braves +125, Total 7

The top club in the league, the Oakland Athletics, finish off a series in Turner Field against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night.

Oakland has been the best team in baseball for much of the year but is tied with the Angels in the AL West. The A's have slowed down somewhat since the All-Star break (14-14) and ran into a hot Royals team in their most recent series. The Athletics were unable to do much in Kansas City as they lost 3-of-4 contests while scoring a total of five runs over the three defeats. The series finale on Thursday resulted in a 7-3 loss, and despite 11 hits, the club was just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. All-Star 3B Josh Donaldson (.253 BA) was 0-for-4 in Thursday’s loss, but had a hit in each of his previous 10 games where he went 14-for-35 (.400) with four doubles, two homers and 6 RBI. The Braves had a promising start to the year, but continue to watch their playoff chances dwindle with losses in 12 of their past 17 games.

Most of Atlanta's problems spur from having the third-worst offense in the league (448 runs) and its 2.8 runs per contest in the most recent series against the Dodgers led to three defeats in four games. The Braves were unable to earn a series split on Thursday when they suffered a 6-4 loss where even their 11 hits could not overcome the poor start by Aaron Harang (4.1 IP, 5 ER). The one consistent hitter on the team has been 1B Freddie Freeman (.294) who has gone 15-for-29 (.517) with five doubles, five runs and four RBI over his past eight games. Getting the start for the Athletics on Sunday night will be LHP Jon Lester (13-7, 2.51 ERA) as he goes up against LHP Mike Minor (4-8, 5.33 ERA) for the host Braves. Oakland has had no trouble playing on the road with a 33-27 record (.550) while Atlanta is a solid 34-28 (.516) at Turner Field heading into this series. These two clubs do not meet often and have not matched up over the past three seasons.

Jon Lester was a huge pickup for the Athletics as they head towards the playoffs. Since joining the team, he is a perfect 3-0 over three starts with a 2.49 ERA and 1.06 WHIP spanning 21.2 innings. Overall on the year, his 2.51 ERA is fifth-best in the AL while he ranks second in wins (13) and sixth in strikeouts (169). Much of his success has come from his 9.2 K/9, his best mark since 2010, but he has also had his best control of his career (2.0 BB/9) and is keeping the ball in the park by giving up only nine home runs in 164.2 frames (0.49 HR/9). Lester posted a quality start in his last outing, going six innings while allowing three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. He has faced Atlanta just three times in his career, going 2-1 with a strong 3.32 ERA, but a poor 1.58 WHIP, and has walked a surprisingly high seven batters in 19 innings of work.

OF B.J. Upton has the most experience against Lester with his time in the AL East, but is a woeful 12-for-58 (.207) with 13 strikeouts in the matchup. Meanwhile, OF Jason Heyward (4-for-6, 2 doubles, 1 HR) has had success against the lefty in limited at-bats. Coming into this series, Oakland’s bullpen has gone 21-15 with a 2.91 ERA and is 26-for-38 (68%) in save opportunities. Sean Doolittle (2.39 ERA, 18 saves) has been amazing as the closer, and owns an unprecedented 74:4 K/BB ratio while going 18-for-21 (86%) in his own saves chances.

Mike Minor has been pitching better than his numbers would suggest, as he has struck out a solid 8.1 batters per nine innings while harnessing his control (2.6 BB/9). Most of his issues so far have stemmed from allowing far too many home runs (1.55 HR/9) and dealing with some bad luck (.358 BABIP). Minor's past five starts have not gone very well as he has allowed five or more runs in three of those outings while giving up 46 hits in 27.1 frames. Minor has never faced the Athletics in his four-year career and will have his work cut out for him as they own the best offense in the league (589 runs) led by 3B Josh Donaldson (.256 BA) who has 27 home runs (9th in majors) and 84 RBI (4th in MLB). On the other side of the diamond, 1B Brandon Moss (.256 BA) has also been putting up big numbers (23 HR, 76 RBI). Coming into Friday, the relievers for Atlanta have gone 17-19 with a 3.25 ERA while converting a tremendous 42-of-51 (82%) saves. Craig Kimbrel (1.88 ERA, 35 saves) has struck out 15.0 batters per nine innings on the year while allowing a single home run in 48 innings on the mound (0.19 HR/9).
