Saturday’s 6-pack

Over/under win totals for Big 14 football this fall:
10.5— Michigan, Ohio State
9.5— Penn State
9— Wisconsin
7.5— Iowa
7— Maryland
6.5— Illinois, Minnesota

Quote of the Day
“I didn’t want to look up and watch him be a superstar somewhere else. If he’s gonna be a superstar, he’s gonna be a superstar for the Colts.”
Colts GM Chris Ballard, on why he drafted QB Anthony Richardson

Saturday’s quiz
Who was head coach of the Warriors before Steve Kerr?

Friday’s quiz
Steve Kerr has won nine NBA championship rings, as a player and a coach. He won three rings playing with the Bulls, two with San Antonio and has won four as coach of the Warriors.

Thursday’s quiz
Max Scherzer has been in the major leagues for 16 years; he broke into the major leagues with Arizona, in 2008.

**************************************************

Saturday’s Den: Wrapping up a busy Friday…….

— 20 years ago, a guy named Dave Matranga made it to the major leagues with the Astros; he went 1-5 before getting sent back down to the minors, with the only hit a home run off Joaquín Benoit of the Rangers, a home run that tied the game.

Two years later, Matranga got back to the major leagues, playing in one game for the Angels before he got send down again.

That was it for Matranga, six major league at-bats in seven games. He played college ball at Pepperdine, but he must’ve gotten a good education, because he has a way better job these days.

These days, Dave Matranga is Aaron Judge’s agent; agents generally make 3% of their client’s salary. Aaron Judge makes $40M a year, and 3% of that is $1.2M a year. $1.2M a year ain’t bad for a guy who was in the big leagues for a week.

— This popped into my head the other night during the Angels’ game on TV; they were trying to figure out which major leaguer had gone to high school closest to Anaheim Stadium— it turns out that Matranga is the only major leaguer who went to Orange High School, which is less than three miles from Anaheim Stadium, closer than anyone else.

A’s 12, Royals 8— It took them 33 games, but Oakland finally got a win from a starting pitcher; Kyle Muller went 5.1 innings for the win. Kansas City is 2-15 at home. Not good.

Padres 5, Dodgers 2— Fernando Tatis hit two home runs off of Clayton Kershaw, only the 9th time Kershaw has allowed two homers to the same guy in a game, but the second time Tatis has done it.

San Diego is 18-15 now, 7-3 in their last ten games. Padres are only a game behind the Dodgers in the NL West. Los Angeles is only 7-8 on the road.

Angels 5, Rangers 4 (10)— Texas led 4-0 in 8th inning, Angels tied the game with three runs in the ninth, then won it on a wild pitch in the 10th inning. Bad loss for the Rangers.

Angels have won five in a row, eight of last ten games; they’re tied for first place with Texas.

Mets 1, Colorado 0— Kodai Senga tossed six shutout innings, but the $375M Mets have scored total of only two runs in their last three games.

Tampa Bay 5, New York 4— Rays are 27-6, 18-2 at home; they lead the Orioles by 4.5 games in the AL East- they lead injury-plagued New York by 10 games.

Celtics 114, 76ers 102
Boston was 16-45 on the arc, 22-41 inside arc.
Jayson Tatum scored 27 points.
Celtics lead series, 2-1.

Suns 121, Nuggets 114
Home side has won all three games in this series.
Suns outscored Denver 38-21 in second quarter.
Booker scored 47 points, Durant 39; the other three Suns’ starters, 13.

— 6-1 guard Max Abmas played in 112 games the last four years for Oral Roberts, which went 84-42 those four years- they surprisingly made the Sweet 16 two years ago.

Abmas scored 20.8 ppg in his Oral Roberts career, but this week, instead of bolting to the NBA Draft or the G-League or to play in Europe, Abmas bolted to play for the Texas Longhorns. Interesting decision.

— Michigan State QB Payton Thorne also bolted, to Auburn. He started for the Spartans the last two years, throwing for 6,494 yards and 49 touchdowns.

— Indianapolis Colts released backup QB Nick Foles, leaving them with three QB’s on their roster; rookie Anthony Richardson, plus journeymen Gardner Minshew, Sam Ehlinger.

Foles was Super Bowl MVP five years ago with the Eagles, but since then, the 34-year old QB has played for the Eagles, Jaguars, Bears, Colts, starting 19 games in those five seasons.

— When Colorado Rockies swept Milwaukee earlier this week, it was their first series sweep in their last 37 series, dating back to last June.

— The 17th Annual Dick Vitale gala raised a record $11.1M Friday night to help fund the fight against pediatric cancer. Coach Vitale, who is 82 now but has more energy than a lot of people half his age, has raised roughly $55M with these annual galas to fight cancer.

Sunday’s 6-pack
Odds to win AFC East/NFC East this year:
AFC East:
Buffalo +125
NJ Jets +225
Miami 3-1
New England 10-1

NFC East
Philadelphia -110
Dallas 2-1
NJ Giants 6-1
Washington 10-1

Quote of the Day
“I don’t think there was ever a point where I was unhappy with what I was doing. It was just pretty clear that they had a different vision for me than maybe I had for a way that I could help the team win games. There wasn’t a wrong thing. There wasn’t disrespect on either side. I think it was just time for both sides to move on.”
Panthers’ WR Adam Thielen, on his exit from Minnesota

Sunday’s quiz
In the movie Little Big League, a 12-year old kid inherits a major league team from his grandfather. What team did the kid inherit?

Saturday’s quiz
Mark Jackson was head coach of the Warriors before Steve Kerr.

Friday’s quiz
Steve Kerr has won nine NBA championship rings, as a player and a coach. He won three rings playing with the Bulls, two with San Antonio and has won four as coach of the Warriors.

***************************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

— Heat 105, Knicks 86
Miami leads series, 2-1
Heat led 58-44 at halftime.
Knicks shot 34.1% from the floor.

— Lakers 127, Warriors 97
Lakers lead series, 2-1.
LA outscored Golden State 36-18 in 2nd quarter.
Warriors were only 13-44 shooting on the arc.

— Lebron James’ son Bronny committed to play college ball at USC next winter, staying close to home.

Bronny James isn’t his dad; he’s a 6-2 guard who scored 13.8 ppg for his high school team at Sierra Canyon in the LA area. He’s a good shooter, a solid player, but at this point he is a complimentary player.

Here’s what probably going to happen:
Bronny will play at USC for one year.
USC is going to get A LOT of attention next winter.
Then, in 2024-25, Bronny will join his dad’s team, wherever that is. Maybe he’ll play some in the G-League first, but Lebron and his son will be teammates in the NBA two years from now.

— Detroit 6, St Louis 5 (10)
Cardinals have lost eight games in a row, are 10-24, their worst start since 1973.

St Louis announced that Willson Contreras will play more DH and even some outfield, while Andrew Knizner takes over as catcher, for now.

Contreras will be making $18M a year starting next year, and they don’t want him to catch?

— Seattle 7, Houston 5
Astros led 3-0 in 8th inning, then Seattle scored seven runs in the 8th.

— Rockies 5, Mets 2— Mets’ TV had Marv Albert in their booth for a couple innings early in the game, ironically while the Knicks game was going on. Mets’ TV voice Gary Cohen doesn’t defer to a lot of people, but he called Albert the greatest basketball announcer ever. It was fun to listen to.

Meanwhile, the Mets have scored a total of 4 runs in their last four games. Not good.

— Dodgers 2, Padres 1
San Diego had their 12th sellout in 20 home games.
Dustin May out-dueled Blake Snell; LA is in first place in the NL West.

— Arizona 8, Washington 7
Nationals trailed 6-2, but scored five runs in 9th to take a 7-6 lead- they blew the lead, with Lourdes Gurriel tying the game with a homer, then Pavin Smith drew a bases-loaded walk to send the fans home happy.

— Rangers 10, Angels 1— Nathan Eovaldi tossed eight shutout innings, as Texas re-takes first place in the AL West.

— A’s 5, Royals 4— Oakland wins consecutive games for the first time this season; they also got another win from a starting pitcher, and their bullpen tossed four scoreless innings.

Kansas City is 2-16 at home.

— NL Central is a sinking ship this week:
Pirates have lost six games in a row.
Brewers have lost six games in a row.
Cardinals have lost eight games in a row.

Pittsburgh still leads the Brewers by a game and a half.

— Red Sox 7, Phillies 4
Boston has won eight games in a row.
Bryce Harper hit his first homer this season.

— This info is from Ralph Michaels on Twitter:
From 2004-22, only 8 times did a team play 30+ games, with a win % of less than 33%, then
was favored by -160 or more.

In the last three days, it also happened four times, after it happened four times in 19 years, and all four teams (Cardinals 3 times, Royals) got beat.

— In college basketball, in 23 conferences that are one-bid leagues for the NCAA Tournament, the Player of the Year in those conferences:

9 of the 23 graduated
10 of the remaining 14 transferred
One of the four who stayed, the DeVries kid at Drake, plays for his dad.

As an A’s fan, I despise rich teams poaching from the poor, but that is what college sports have become. 10 kids who were Player of the Year in their conference have transferred.
