Thursday’s 6-pack

Leaders among active major leaguers in doubles:
610— Miguel Cabrera
453— Joey Votto
424— Evan Longoria
422— Freddie Freeman
397— Andrew McCutchen
393— Paul Goldschmidt

Quote of the Day
“Most teammates I know who don’t love basketball are the really (bleep)ing good ones — are the most skilled ones. It’s the wildest shit in the world. Preparation is different when you got so much skill. You could just show up to the game and get a mother-bleeping 30, 40. That might work against other teams who aren’t that good. But you can’t do that in the playoffs.”
NBA player Patrick Beverley

Thursday’s quiz
Max Scherzer has been in the major leagues for 16 years; what team did he break into the major leagues with?

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Oceans Eleven, Julia Roberts plays George Clooney’s ex-wife.

Tuesday’s quiz
In the movie Heaven Can Wait, the Rams win the Super Bowl with Warren Beatty’s character playing quarterback- he wore number 16 (Ron Jaworski was the Rams’ QB at the time).

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud

— So I’m at the post office Wednesday; the guy in front of me is mailing two crates that apparently had live birds in them. Who knew you could mail birds at the post office?

— If you like baseball, and you’re on Twitter, follow @homerunreport Every time a home run is it in the major leagues, they post:
Launch angle
Exit velocity
distance
how many MLB ballparks it would’ve been a home run in.

I’m a big fan of seeing how many ballparks a home run would’ve gone out of; good stuff.

Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 3— Toronto went 16-3 against the Red Sox last year; they’re 0-3 so far this season. Sloppy game for the Blue Jays; they made four errors.

Tigers 6-8, Mets 5-1— Apparently $375M doesn’t buy as much as it used to; Mets out-spent everyone this winter, but now they’ve lost eight of their last 10 games, are 16-15, five games behind Atlanta in the AL East.

Mariners 7, A’s 2 (10)— AJ Pollock was hitting .140 this season when he tied the game with a 9th inning home run. Whatever Mark Kotsay is making this year for managing the A’s, it isn’t enough— what a cruddy team they gave him to run.

That said, in the A’s last four games, the winning run scored from the 7th inning on; they’re competing, but they still lose most every night.

Dodgers 10, Phillies 6
Max Muncy hit a walk-off grand slam.
Dodgers scored 36 runs in sweeping this series, the most runs they’ve ever scored in a 3-game series at Dodger Stadium.
Bryce Harper was 3-3 with two walks in his second game back from the injured list.

Braves 14, Marlins 6— I watched this game to see if I wanted to pick up Marlins’ P Braxton Garrett for my fantasy team; he gave up 11 runs in 4.1 IP.

Talk about taking one for the team.

New York 4, Cleveland 3 (10)— Willie Calhoun tied the game with a 9th inning single, Jose Trevino won it with a walk-off hit in the 10th. Unlikely heroes.

Royals 6, Orioles 0— Zack Greinke needed only 44 pitches to get thru 5 IP, but they took him out anyway— they didn’t want him facing the Orioles’ lineup a third time. Go figure.

Baltimore starter Kyle Gibson faced 28 hitters; he didn’t walk or strike out any of them; that doesn’t happen a lot. He got only one whiff on the Royals’ 39 swings against him.

Arizona 12, Texas 7— Christian Walker homered twice for the Diamondbacks. Josh Jung homered twice for Texas. Arizona’s bullpen threw 3.1 scoreless innings.

Tampa Bay 8, Pittsburgh 1— Rays are 25-6, 4.5 games ahead in the AL East. Pirates lost their last three games, after a 20-8 start, but they still lead the NL Central.

— Colorado Rockies’ P German Marquez (Tommy John surgery) is out for the year.

— Good college basketball doubleheader in Toronto December 9th; Purdue-Alabama, then TCU-Clemson.

— There have been 59 coaching changes in college basketball this spring; roughly 16% of teams in Division I have changed head coaches.

Celtics 121, 76ers 87— Boston made 20-51 on the arc; series is tied 1-1.

— WR Randall Cobb signed with the Jets, re-uniting with Aaron Rodgers. Nine of his 12 years in the NFL have come with Rodgers as his QB.

Friday’s 6-pack
Last six World Series champs:
2017— Houston Astros
2018— Boston Red Sox
2019— Washington Nationals
2020— Los Angeles Dodgers
2021— Atlanta Braves
2022— Houston Astros

Quote of the Day
“So listen. I can talk for hours on it and I can talk for a minute; the minute’s probably easier. He doesn’t like me and I don’t like him, that’s how it is.”
Phoenix Suns’ owner Mat Ishbia, talking about Cavaliers’ owner Dan Gilbert

Friday’s quiz
How many NBA championship rings has Steve Kerr won, both as a player and coach?

Thursday’s quiz
Max Scherzer has been in the major leagues for 16 years; he broke into the major leagues with Arizona, in 2008.

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Oceans Eleven, Julia Roberts plays George Clooney’s ex-wife.

******************************************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

— What have you done for me lately?

Mike Budenholzer went 310-146 in five years as coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, winning the NBA title two years ago. 310-146 is a really good record.

Milwaukee fired him Thursday; the team was recently sold, with the Haslam family that also owns the Cleveland Browns now running things. Bucks were the #1-seed in the East this year, but they got upset by Miami in the playoffs. I guess the new owners weren’t happy about it.

I’m figuring Budenholzer won’t be out of work long; he also went 230-219 in five years with the Atlanta Hawks. Winning coaches are hard to find.

— ESPN has four people on their NBA pregame show; only one of them played in the NBA, which is disappointing. Why they insist on putting Stephen A Smith on camera is baffling, but that’s why they’re ESPN, and why less people watch them now.

— Warriors 127, Lakers 100
Golden State outscored Lakers 84-47 in 2nd/3rd quarters.
Warriors were 21-42 on the arc; Klay Thompson was 8-11.
Series is now tied, 1-1.

— Basketball star Hunter Dickinson bolts from Michigan to Kansas; he averaged 18.5 ppg, 9.0 rebounds in 32.7 minutes/game last year.

— Weird baseball schedule Thursday; there were 10 games, only one twilight game, and that was over by 9:10. Luckily on YouTube TV, you can watch replays of games played earlier in the day, but why no night games at all?

— Back in 2012, Harvard-Westlake HS in Los Angeles had these three guys on their baseball team: Max Fried, Lucas Giolito, Jack Flaherty.

Imagine coaching a high school team with three future major leaguers on it? The coach was a guy named Ethan Katz, who later on was pitching coach for the White Sox.

— Rays 3, Pirates 2— Tampa Bay sweeps the Pirates; they’re 26-6, 17-2 at home.

Rays are fifth team since 1947 to start a season 25-6 or better; the other four teams all won the World Series that season:
1955 Dodgers
1958 Bronx
2016 Cubs
1984 Tigers

— Tampa Bay P Zach Eflin was told by umpires in this game that if he didn’t take his wedding ring off, he’d be ejected. Apparently most umpire crews let Eflin wear the ring, but this crew did not, so he took it off.

— Nationals 4, Cubs 3— Last two weeks, Cubs are 0-7 in games where winning run scored from 7th inning on. Getting swept by the Nationals es no bueno.

Time of this game was 1:55; vendors couldn’t have been happy with that.

— Baltimore 13, Kansas City 10— Orioles are 21-10, leading the AL Wild Card race; they’re 10-3 in games where the winning scored from 7th inning on.

Kansas City, on the other hand, is 2-14 at home, with the equally-lowly A’s coming to town this weekend.

— Colorado 9, Milwaukee 6— Brewers led 6-0 after six innings, but were outscored 9-0 in the last three innings. Coming into this game, Colorado had been outscored 49-27 from 7th inning on this season.

— Detroit 2, Mets 0— Justin Verlander gave up two homers in the first inning of his first start for New York, then settled down, but Eduardo Rodriguez blanked the Mets for eight innings, as the Tigers sweep the 3-game series in Motown.

— QB Lamar Jackson is banking a $72.5M signing bonus from the Baltimore Ravens; hopefully he plays in December this year. Jackson missed the Ravens’ last six games last year, their last four games the year before. They say the best ability is dependability.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not):
NL: Braves-Pirates-Dodgers. Wild Cards: Brewers, Arizona, Padres
AL: Rays, Twins, Rangers. Wild Cards: Orioles, Red Sox, Tor/LAA
