Quote of the Day
“I don’t even know where to start. It’s been a long time coming, a lot of hard work. I’ve been through a lot, and I’m not just talking about basketball … it feels good. I don’t know what to say. It’s amazing.”
76ers’ Joel Embiid, after winning the NBA’s MVP award

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Oceans Eleven, what famous actress plays George Clooney’s ex-wife?

Tuesday’s quiz

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— NFL schedule comes out next week, so we’ve started to identify trends and things that could point us towards picking some winners.

Over the last 20 years, the defending Super Bowl champ is 11-6-3 ATS in their Week 1 game the next season, 9-4-3 as a favorite, 2-2 as an underdog- they’re 16-4 SU.

During that same time, Super Bowl losers are 4-16 ATS in their Week 1 game the next season, 4-13 as a favorite, 0-3 as an underdog- they’re 9-11 SU.

— Odd fact: Last time the Super Bowl loser was an underdog in their Week 1 game the next year was 2011, it was the Steelers.

— Green Bay Packers/QB Jordan Love agreed on a one-year contract extension worth up to $22.5M (including $13.5M fully guaranteed). Had Green Bay picked up his 5th-year option instead of giving him the extension, Love would’ve earned a guaranteed $20.272M for 2024, after making $2,298,655 in 2023, which will be his first season as the starter.

— Interesting night of baseball Tuesday; in 7 of the 14 games, the winning run scored from the 7th inning on.

— Under was 10-4 in baseball Tuesday; five starting pitchers didn’t allow a run, only one of them got the win in his game.

Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 6— Boston is 12-6 in its last 18 games. Toronto lost its last three games, all in their opponent’s last turn at bat.

Dodgers 13, Phillies 1— Dodgers won their last five games, scoring 40 runs. Bryce Harper returned from Tommy John surgery, went 0-4 with three strikeouts as the DH.

Orioles 11, Tigers 7— Baltimore is 20-9, but they’re still 3.5 games out of first place; Mountcastle homered twice, knocked in five runs.

Rangers 6, Arizona 4— Zac Gallen’s scoreless streak ended at 28 innings, but he left the game with a 4-3 lead after five innings, which didn’t last long.

Angels 5, Cardinals 1— St Louis lost 11 of its last 14 games; the natives are getting restless.

— Major League personnel moves:
Marlins put OF Avasail Garcia on the IL
A’s put SS Aledmys Diaz (hamstring) on the IL
Astros put P Luis Garcia (elbow) on the IL
Royals put SS Nicky Lopez (appendicitis) on the IL

— Random trivia: 21 years ago this week, Mike Cameron/Brett Boone hit back-to-back home runs twice for Seattle……in the same inning. It was the first time ever that teammates went back-to-back twice in the same game, much less the same inning.

— Orioles are 10-0 in series openers; Cardinals are 0-10.

— Who makes Arkansas’ football schedule? Razorbacks have a ridiculously hard 4-game stretch coming up this fall:
September 23: @ LSU
September 30, vs Texas A&M at the Cowboys’ Stadium in Arlington
October 7, @ Ole Miss
October 14, @ Alabama

None of the games are at home; no off-weeks in between. Yikes.

— Next October, Dallas Mavericks/Minnesota Timberwolves will be play two NBA preseason games in Abu Dhabi.

— December 16 in Atlanta, there is a pretty good college basketball twinbill:
Kentucky-Ohio State, then UCLA-North Carolina.

— NHL was a six-team league until they expanded to 12 teams for the 1967-68 season; Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup in 1967, the last year the NHL had six teams.

They haven’t won the Stanley Cup since then, the only Original Six team that hasn’t.

Knicks 111, Heat 105
Brunson scored 30 points, made 6-10 3-pointers.
Heat’s star Butler (ankle) sat this game out.
Miami was 17-49 on the arc, 21-36 inside the arc.
Knicks outscored Miami 35-28 in fourth quarter.
Series is tied, 1-1

Lakers 117, Warriors 112
Davis had 30 points, 23 rebounds in LA’s upset win.
Schroder scored 19 points off the bench for LA.
Lakers lead series, 1-0.
