Monday’s 6-pack

Leaders in on-base %age through only four days (minimum 10 AB’s):
1.857— Steven Kwan, Clev
1.788— Nolan Arenado, StL
1.576— Matt Olson, Atl
1.538— Jurickson Profar, SD
1.469— Mark Canha, NYM
1.455— Andrew Vaughn, CWS

Quote of the Day
“I love the man. He gave me a chance. This was the only team that called me in the offseason and gave me a chance. I have nothing bad to say about him. All praise goes to him. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have a chance to play basketball.”
Lakers G Malik Monk, talking about coach Frank Vogel

Monday’s quiz
The NHL expanded from six teams to 12 in 1967; which of the new six teams was the first one to win the Stanley Cup?

Sunday’s quiz
Whit Merrifield was the only player in big leagues to play all 162 games last year; he batted leadoff in every game, too.

Saturday’s quiz
Fernando Tatis Sr hit two grand slams in the same inning of a game at Dodger Stadium.

********************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

13) Four days into the season, Tampa Bay Rays are the only unbeaten team in baseball.

12) There have been 14 games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on; the home team is 10-4 in those games.

11) Guardians 17, Royals 3— Cleveland scored once in their first two games; they scored 10 runs in the first two innings of this game. Rookie OF Steven Kwan was 5-5 in this game, is 8-10 so far this season.

10) Rangers 12, Blue Jays 6— Texas is paying Seager/Semien $57M a year to play SS/2B, but they need pitching (everyone does). Rangers lost two of three in Toronto, despite scoring 23 runs in the three games.

As for Toronto, their starting pitchers lasted a total of 8.2 IP in three games. Not ideal.

9) Brewers 5, Cubs 4— Nic Lentz umpired the plate in this game; he didn’t call many strikes on close pitches. Freddy Peralta threw 88 pitches, lasted four innings. Marcus Stroman threw 79 pitches in five innings. No one pays to watch the umpire squeeze pitchers.

8) Only three starting pitchers threw 80+ pitches Sunday; only one of them finished the fifth inning. So far this season, only three pitchers have thrown 90+ pitches.

7) Scottie Scheffler won The Masters, which I mention only because he went to high school in Dallas at Highland Park HS, which is also where Dodgers P Clayton Kershaw, Rams QB Matthew Stafford went to school. Have I mentioned lately that Stafford won a Super Bowl with the Rams couple months ago? OK, I probably have.

6) NBA public relations people had to be queasy Sunday night; Memphis Grizzlies are on national TV, their star player Ja Morant is sitting out, dressed in street clothes on the bench, wearing a St Louis Cardinals BASEBALL cap. No bueno.

Memphis is only four hours from St Louis; their AAA team is in Memphis, but still. Second half, Morant’s Cardinal cap was turned backwards; the TNT cameras gave more close-ups when he was on camera, so you couldn’t see the hat that much.

When one of the best young players in the game is sitting there promoting a competing business, someone from the commissioner’s office had to be hitting the phones, and quickly.

5) Watching TV very late at night Saturday, Big 14 Network and ACC Network are showing spring football games (Purdue/Boston College). Interesting stuff; college football is out of the public eye until the magazines come out in July, but coaches/players are doing the work now.

4) Purdue won nine games last year, most it has won since 2003. Hard to tell a lot from spring games; it is like Pro Bowl rules, no real tackling, can’t hit the QB’s, but the tone from the guys on TV was positive, like this is a program on the rise. Purdue opens on a Thursday night with Penn State; we’ll find out a lot more then.

3) The TV analyst was a Purdue alum; he said something I didn’t realize, or maybe I did realize but had forgotten. He said the most important wins of his career were when they beat Indiana, not the bowl games or beating the better teams like Michigan/Ohio State. Rivalry games really mean the most to guys that played the game.

2) ESPN has a mock draft every other day or so; the draft isn’t for 17 more days. Going to be a lot of guessing on TV between now and then; I’m a Rams fan, so the first round doesn’t mean too much to me. Rams haven’t had a first round pick since 2016; their next one is 2024, but it’ll be interesting to follow and study, but when it happens, not people guessing about it.

1) Watching Winning Time on HBO, the story about the Magic Johnson-era Lakers, it appears that Nike’s Phil Knight offered Magic Johnson stock options in Nike, when Johnson was a rookie and Nike was basically a start-up company.

If the information on the show is accurate, Johnson signed with Converse and turned down Nike; those stock options he would’ve been given turned out to be worth $5.2B, that’s billion, with a B.

Whoops.

Tuesday’s 6-pack

Odds to win the USFL championship; season starts Saturday
+450— Michigan Panthers (Jeff Fisher)
+450— Tampa Bay Bandits (Todd Haley)
+450— New Orleans Breakers (Larry Fedora)
+550— Philadelphia Stars (Bart Andrus)
+550— Pittsburgh Maulers (Kirby Wilson)
+700— Birmingham Stallions (Skip Holtz)
+700— Houston Gamblers (Kevin Sumlin)
+900— New Jersey Generals (Mike Riley)

Quote of the Day
“Emotions got the best of me. I said it. And do I mean it? No. It’s a frustrating night for me. Obviously I made a few mistakes in the field. But these fans just want to win. You heard it, when we came back. They’re great. I’m sorry to them. I don’t mean that.”
Phillies 3B Alec Bohm, who took grief from the home fans after making two errors Monday

Tuesday’s quiz
Phil Jackson won 11 NBA titles as a head coach; what team did he begin his NBA coaching career with as an assistant, before he went to Chicago?

Monday’s quiz
The NHL expanded from six teams to 12 in 1967; Philadelphia Flyers were first of those new teams to win the Stanley Cup- they won the Cup in 1974.

Sunday’s quiz
Whit Merrifield was the only player in big leagues to play all 162 games last year; he batted leadoff in every game, too.

****************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) NBA play-in stuff starts tonight; here is how it works:
— #10 Charlotte @ #9 Atlanta; #10 San Antonio @ #9 New Orleans— Loser is done for the season, winner plays loser of the #7-8 game.
— #8 Cleveland @ #7 Brooklyn; #8 Clippers @ #7 Minnesota— Winner of these games are in the playoffs; losers plays the winner of the #9-10 game.

12) Lakers won the NBA title two years ago, with Frank Vogel as coach; they fired him Monday, and didn’t handle it well, letting word leak out during their last game Sunday night.

Vogel went 145-107 in three years with LA; he deserved better than being ambushed at his press conference after Sunday’s game, especially after the Lakers won that (meaningless) game in OT.

11) By the way, Lakers’ rookie Austin Reaves had a triple double in that game, becoming the first undrafted rookie ever to have a triple-double, while scoring 30+ points.

10) SMU G Kendrick Davis, AAC Player of the Year, entered the transfer portal; he scored 19.4 ppg this season, shooting 37.2% on the arc. He is a graduate transfer who right now is listed as the best player in the portal.

9) Does the transfer portal allow some high school recruits to slip thru the cracks? Teams are spending more and more energy poaching players from other college teams, so they’re spending less time on recruiting high school kids.

8) Random golf note: Since 2015, Rory McIlroy is +35 in the first round of major tournaments, then 68-under the rest of those tournaments.

7) Barry Bonds retired after the 2007 season; since then, the Giants have started a different guy in left field in their season opener every year since then. 14 different guys.

6) Cal Ripken’s record for consecutive games played will never, ever be broken; right now, the active player who has played the most consecutive games is Whit Merrifield (472) with Marcus Semien next at 166. Ripken played in 2,632 consecutive games.

5) There is a baseball pitching stat called (WHIP); it measures how many runners a pitcher puts on base. WHIP is walks + hits divided by innings pitched, but shouldn’t hit batters count too? How can you accurately measure baserunners allowed if you ignore hit batters?

4) Phillies 5, Mets 4:
— Mets led this game 4-0 in 8th inning.
— Didi Gregorius had game-winning double for the Phillies.
— Mets’ P Walker left after two innings (shoulder)

3) Nationals 11, Braves 2:
— Maikel Franco was 4-5, with five RBI.
— Atlanta has sold out four of its five games this season.

2) Guardians 10, Royals 7:
— Cleveland rookie OF Kwan is 9-13 with three walks to start his big league career.
— Game was 4-4 after six innings, but the Royals’ bullpen imploded.

1) Forbes Magazine lists the Denver Broncos as the 10th-most valuable franchise in the NFL; lot of people think that when the Broncos are sold, it’ll be for more than the $4B Walmart heir Rob Walton bid for the team. Walton’s cousin is married to Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke, who owns the NBA/NHL teams in Denver.

Wednesday’s 6-pack

Major league leaders in batting average:
.700— Ian Happ, Cubs
.667— Steven Kwan, Clev
.615— Ji-Man Choi, TB
.550— Wander Franco, TB
.500— Owen Miller, Clev
.474— Matt Olson, Atl

Quote of the Day
“When one door closes, another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully at the closed door, that we do not see the ones that open for us.”
Alexander Graham Bell

Wednesday’s quiz
In the great poker movie Rounders, what famous actor played Russian mobster Teddy KGB?

Tuesday’s quiz
Phil Jackson won 11 NBA titles as a head coach; he began his NBA coaching career as an assistant for three years, for Kevin Loughery and the New Jersey Nets.

Monday’s quiz
The NHL expanded from six teams to 12 in 1967; Philadelphia Flyers were first of those new teams to win the Stanley Cup- they won the Cup in 1974.

******************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

13) Guardians 10, Reds 5— Cleveland lost its first two games, scoring one run; since then, they’ve won three in a row, scoring 17-10-10 runs. This game was 4-4 in the 9th; Guardians scored six times in the last inning. Jose Ramirez homered/tripled, knocked in six runs.

12) Guardians’ rookie OF Stephen Kwan has reached base 18 times in his first five games; he’s seen 115 pitches, hasn’t swung/missed yet. Kwan is 10-15 with seven walks, making him this year’s phenom, much like Chicago’s Yermin Mercedes was last year.

11) Astros 2, Diamondbacks 1:
— Michael Brantley’s 9th-inning single was a game-winner.
— Houston won four of its first five games.

10) White Sox 3, Mariners 2:
— Chicago improves to 3-1, despite going 0-6 with runners in scoring position.
— White Sox put P Lucas Giolito, OF AJ Pollock on the IL.

9) Another day with no pitcher throwing 90 pitches; going take a few weeks for pitchers to get into regular season form. Nine hurlers did throw 80+ pitches.

8) Brooklyn 115, Cleveland 108:
— Irving scored 34 points, shooting 12-15 from floor.
— Nets play Boston in next round.
— Cavaliers were minus-9 in 8:00 LeVert sat out.

7) Minnesota 109, LA Clippers 104:
— Wolves outscored LA 31-20 in fourth quarter.
— Minnesota survived shaky 23-37 shooting on foul line.
— Edwards scored 30, Russell 29 for Minnesota- they play Memphis in next round.

6) Alabama poached an offensive tackle from SEC doormat Vanderbilt this week; awesome. Transfer portal is changing college sports; the rich get richer.

5) Speaking of which, in the college basketball portal:
— LSU’s Eric Gaines bolts to UAB of Conference USA
— Northern Iowa’s Noah Carter bolts to Missouri of the SEC.

4) Saint Peter’s hired Jersey City native/Wagner coach Bashir Mason as its new basketball coach; Mason was 165-130 at Wagner, winning three regular season titles, making it to the NIT three times. He has some rebuilding to do with the Peacocks; three of their best guys are in the transfer portal.

3) RIP Gilbert Gottfried; the quirky comedian passed away this week at age 67, after a long illness. He wasn’t politically correct, he was just funny, in an odd way.

They posted a scene of him on the great game show Hollywood Squares; the game came down to who won the last square, which was Gottfried’s, but contestants kept being wrong on agreeing or disagreeing with his answers— it took nine questions for someone to win the square. Its is a 5:00 clip that was all over Twitter on Tuesday- very funny.

2) Whole I’m talking about game shows, daytime TV needs more game shows, less contrived talk shows, where people just yell at each other in scripted arguments. Useless palaver; game shows were live TV and they were more fun.

Hollywood Squares, $10,000 Pyramid, Password, Concentration should all join Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune on daytime TV. ESPN should start televising poker tournaments again, too.

1) Found out this week that there is a station that shows M*A*S*H re-runs every weeknight, but sadly, DirecTV doesn’t have that channel. I have a station that shows Perry Mason re-runs from 1965 in the middle of the night, but no M*A*S*H, one of the greatest comedies of all time. Disappointing

Thursday’s 6-pack

XFL begins play next year; here are the head coaches:
— Reggie Barlow
— Anthony Becht
— Terrell Buckley
— Jim Haslett
— Wade Phillips
— Bob Stoops
— Hines Ward
— Rod Woodson

Quote of the Day
“I feel disrespected. A hundred percent. Because I was told one thing, and they completely did another. That’s what I’m in the middle of right now. … I’m just looking for stabilization right now.”
Baker Mayfield

Thursday’s quiz
In the 2014 movie The Gambler, Mark Wahlberg plays a college professor with a serious gambling problem. What well-known actor plays one of the three mobsters he owes a ton of money to?

Wednesday’s quiz
In the great poker movie Rounders, John Malkovich played Russian mobster Teddy KGB.

Tuesday’s quiz
Phil Jackson won 11 NBA titles as a head coach; he began his NBA coaching career as an assistant for three years, for Kevin Loughery and the New Jersey Nets.

**********************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud……..

13) Dodgers 7, Twins 0:
— Kershaw threw 7 perfect IP, striking out 13, but was pulled after 80 pitches.
— Gary Sanchez had Minnesota’s only hit, in 8th inning.
— Dodgers will be glad to get home; it was 38 degrees for this game.

12) Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts is the only manager ever to pull a starting pitcher who threw seven perfect innings. He has done it TWICE now; Wednesday in Minnesota and with Rich Hill six years ago.

11) Toronto 6, New York 4:
— Guerrero was 4-4, hit three home runs.
— Gerrit Cole’s first two starts: 6 runs in 9.2 IP, two no-decisions.

10) Guardians 7, Reds 3:
— Cleveland won its last four games, scoring 44 runs.
— Last four games, Jose Ramirez is 10-17, with 23 total bases,

9) Mets 9, Phillies 6:
— Pete Alonso went 3-5, with two doubles, a homer, 5 RBI
— Two bullpens combined to give up 11 runs in 9.2 IP.

8) Diamondbacks 3, Astros 2 (10):
— Arizona is batting .130 as a team, scoring 13 runs in six games. Somehow, they’ve won two games (2-4).
— Teams combined to go 2-22 with runners in scoring position.

7) A’s 4, Rays 2:
— I complained (and still complain) about the A’s tanking this season, but they’re 3-3 on this road trip, showing a lot of spunk against two good teams.
— Murphy’s 3-run homer was the big hit in this game.

6) Hawks 132, Hornets 103:
— Atlanta shot 50% (16-32) on the arc; they scored 72 points in 2nd half.
— Atlanta plays Cleveland for the last playoff spot in the East.

5) Pelicans 113, Spurs 103:
— New Orleans shot 59% inside the arc.
— Pelicans play the Clippers for the last playoff slot in the West.

4) Las Vegas Raiders signed QB Derek Carr to a 3-year contract extension worth $121.5M; Carr has a 57-71 W-L record in eight years with the Raiders, 18-16 the last two years. Las Vegas hired Josh McDaniels as its new head coach; can he help Carr become a championship QB?

3) One of the TV analysts for USFL games this spring is former Cowboys’ coach Jason Garrett; will be interesting to hear what he has to say, especially where the quarterbacks are concerned.

2) North Carolina basketball star Armando Bacot is coming back to Chapel Hill for his senior year, with UNC losing only one player from this year’s national runner-ups (Manek), Tar Heels are a top 5 team nationally next fall if everyone else stays on the squad.

1) Baseball is going to look a whole lot different next year, when shifts are banned; Having two infielders on each side of second base, having all four infielders on the infield dirt, going to be a lot more spray hitters getting hits next season, and that is a good thing.
