Friday’s 6-pack

NBA’s leading scorers:
30.4— Joel Embiid, Phil
30.3— Lebron James, LAL
29.9— Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milw
28.3— Luka Doncic, Dal/Trae Young, Atl
28.0— DeMar DeRozan, Chi
27.6— Ja Morant, Mem

Quote of the Day
“I have never seen a draft like this before, with so many teams holding multiple first-round picks. Never. Never. Never. This is a new one for all of us. This is unique.”
An unnamed GM in the NFL

Friday’s quiz
What old-time singer was the original owner of the Los Angeles Angels?

Thursday’s quiz
Shaquille O’Neal played his college basketball at LSU.

Wednesday’s quiz
Philip Seymour Hoffman played A’s manager Art Howe in Moneyball.

**********************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with weekend here…….

13) Reds 6, Braves 3:
— ESPN had Reds’ 1B Joey Votto miked, was interviewing him while he played the field in the 4th inning Thursday night. To me, this is an unnecessary intrusion on the game; let the guy play, it is a regular season game. Interview him in the dugout while the Reds are batting.
— Brandon Drury hit a 3-run homer in 6th inning to break game open.

12) Cubs 5, Brewers 4:
— Cubs’ SS Nico Hoerner hit the major league’s first home run this season.
— Last 11 years, Milwaukee has started 11 different players at 1B in their opener.

11) Cardinals 9, Pirates 0:
— Adam Wainwright has now thrown 32 consecutive scoreless innings vs Pittsburgh.
— Paul Goldschmidt was 1-1 with four walks in this game.

10) They were talking on a San Diego Padres’ exhibition game the other night, about a guy named John Roskos, who made the 2000 Padres after he had an awesome spring training.

Roskos had played briefly for the Marlins the previous two years; he started his first two games for San Diego in 2000, but it didn’t go well, and he got sent down to the minors after going 1-27, never to return to the major leagues.

It is so difficult to get to the major leagues, but it is tough to stay there too. A guy goes 4-49 in 37 games over three seasons, and 22 years later, they’re still talking about him.

9) Padres and Minnesota Twins made a trade:
— Minnesota gets P’s Chris Paddack and Emilio Pagan
— San Diego gets P Taylor Rogers and OF Brent Rooker.

8) College basketball lost one of its better TV analysts Thursday; Steve Lavin signed on to coach the San Diego Toreros in the WCC. Lavin used to coach UCLA/St John’s; San Diego is a much harder job than UCLA/St John’s.

7) Why didn’t the Minnesota Twins put a retractable dome over their stadium? Milwaukee did it and they generally average 8,000 or so more fans a game than the Twins do.

6) Last year was first time ever that pitchers started more games with five days’ rest than four days’ rest. Some teams are going with six-man rotations to start this season.

5) Hopefully the Los Angeles Angels are a contender this year, so their TV guys don’t spend all their time raving about Shohei Ohtani- it is all they ever do now. They’ve got Mike Trout on the team but they are obsessed with Ohtani. Maybe if the team is actually good, they can talk about some of the other 25 guys on the team.

Ohtani apparently spent a good part of his offseason doing commercials/making more $$$; he was on a ton of commercials during ballgames Thursday.

4) At BetMGM, 22.3% of bets to win the NBA title were on the Lakers, most of any team, so they’re pretty darn happy LA has been eliminated from the playoff hunt.

3) Baseball’s All-Star Game is in Dodger Stadium this summer, for first time since 1980.

2) Buffalo Bills signed WR Stefan Diggs to a 4-year, $104M contract; Bills are getting their new stadium, now they’re trying to build a championship team to play in the new stadium.

1) ESPN just signed NFL information guy Adam Schefter to a new contract, for $9M a year; at first I thought it was a misprint, but it is for real. Schefter makes freakin’ $9M a year. What a country.

“I’m not afraid of searching for a job.”
Aaron Judge, who this week somehow turned down a 7-year contract for $31M a year.

Friday’s quiz
Singer Gene Autry was the original owner of the Los Angeles Angels.

*****************************

Saturday’s Den: Wrapping up the second day of baseball…….

13) The classic baseball movie Major League came out 33 years ago this week, which makes me feel old; the plot of that movie is being played out in Oakland, where the A’s have assembled a very bad baseball team. Not sure if ownership is trying to lose so much that attendance will go in the tank, which will justify a move to Las Vegas/Portland, but it seems that way.

In 1979, the A’s went 54-108; I was 19 and it was a long summer, but at least that team had a young Rickey Henderson. Not much hope for this group right now.

12) Through two days, 20 games:
— Most pitches thrown: Robbie Ray 96; Yu Darvish/Frankie Montas 92
— Home teams are 11-9; over is 10-9-1.

11) Giving umpires a microphone to announce to the crowd how instant replay reviews turn out is a great idea. 20 years late, but better late than never.

10) Padres 3, Diamondbacks 0:
— Thru two games, Arizona has zero hits in innings 1-6.
— Eric Hosmer had three hits, scored twice for San Diego.

9) Giants 6, Marlins 5 (10):
— Miami scored three runs in ninth, took a 5-4 lead, but couldn’t hold it.
— Thairo Estrada tied the game with a 9th-inning homer for the Giants; Austin Slater walked it off with a 10th-inning double.

8) Rangers 10, Blue Jays 8:
— Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios didn’t get an out until his 31st pitch; it was the only out he got.
— Texas led 6-0 in second inning; it was tied by the fifth inning.

7) Bronx 6, Red Sox 5 (11):
— Game was 3-2 after first inning, almost didn’t get over the total.
— Newly-acquired Josh Donaldson walked it off with an 11th-inning single.
— Teams combined to go 3-20 with runners in scoring position.

6) Tigers 5, White Sox 4:
— Eric Haase tied game with a 9th inning homer.
— Javier Baez walked it off with a 10th-inning single.
— Chicago 3B Yoan Moncada (oblique) is out for three weeks.

5) Mariners 2, Twins 1:
— Mitch Haniger hit a 2-run homer in the first, Seattle’s only runs.
— Robbie Ray tossed 7 innings, 96 innings, more than any pitcher so far this week.
— Teams combined to go 0-12 with runners in scoring position.

4) Mets 7, Nationals 3:
— Of course there was a bench-clearing incident in a game on AppleTV.
— Mets have been getting with lot of pitches, and they’re tired of it.
— McNeil went 3-4, scored twice, knocked in two runs.

3) Astros 13, Angels 6:
— Thru two games, Houston has hit eight home runs.
— Bregman/Tucker both hit two homers in this game.
— Angels’ bullpen gave up 11 runs in five innings.

2) Braves 7, Reds 6:
— Matt Olson had his first three hits for Atlanta.
— Braves led 7-0 in third inning, hung on for dear life.
— Trvis d’Arnaud knocked in three runs for Atlanta.

1) I pay a decent amount of money for the Extra Innings package on DirecTV, so I can watch any major league game being played; now comes word that AppleTV is going to have a Friday night doubleheader every week- those games aren’t on the Extra Innings package. Right now they’re free, but that is temporary; doubtful I’m going to shell out more money for another TV station.

All these companies are nickel/diming us with these “plus” channels; CNN+, Paramount+. Peacock, A&E+, AppleTV+. It all adds up; lot of small charges add up to a big charge. Oy.

Sunday’s 6-pack

NBA leaders in rebounding:
14.7— Rudy Gobert, Utah
13.8— Nikola Jokic, Den
12.1— Domantas Sabonis, Ind
11.8— Clint Capela, Atl
11.6— Giannis Antetokounmpo, Mil/Joel Embiid, Phil
11.5— Jonas Valanciunas, NO

Quote of the Day
“It’s something that you dream about. Not everybody gets the chance to experience that. So I’m going to cherish every second of the thing because you’re never guaranteed for this to happen again.”
Braves manager Brian Snitker, on getting his World Series ring

Sunday’s quiz
Who was the only player in big leagues to play all 162 games last year?
Hint: He batted leadoff in every game, too.

Saturday’s quiz
Fernando Tatis Sr hit two grand slams in the same inning of a game at Dodger Stadium.

Friday’s quiz
Singer Gene Autry was the original owner of the Los Angeles Angels.

*******************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

13) Baseball season has obviously started but the great majority of pitchers are still in spring training mode, as far as how many pitches they throw. There have been 35 games played so far; only three starting pitchers have thrown 90+ pitches.

Some teams haven’t used their relievers on consecutive days yet; the season is six months long, so they’re being careful and bringing their pitchers along at same pace they normally do, its just that spring training was shorter this year.

12) IF/utility guy Brad Miller is batting leadoff for Texas this week; this guy has had quite a journey the last few years:
2013-15— Seattle
2016-18— Tampa Bay
2018— Milwaukee
2019— Cleveland
2019— Philadelphia
2020— St Louis
2021— Philadelphia (again)
2022— Texas

Texas is his sixth team the last five years, not counting his two stints in Philly. Versatile players who get on base have value, so teams are willing to give Miller a shot.

11) Couple of NL Central pitchers really struggled in the first inning Saturday:
— Miles Mikolas needed 41 pitches to get thru his first inning, allowing only one run, but he was also out of the game in the 4th inning.
— Brandon Woodruff threw 40 pitches in his first inning, giving up three runs; he didn’t finish the 4th inning either.

Unusual for a pitcher to throw 40+ pitches in any inning, especially these days.

10) New York 4, Boston 2— Red Sox start the season going 2-22 with runners in scoring position.

9) Kansas City 1, Cleveland 0 (10)— Royals scored total of four runs in their first two games, but won both of them.

8) Miami 2, San Francisco 1— Carlos Rodon struck out 12 in his Giants’ debut, but didn’t get much run support. Marlins’ bullpen tossed four shutout innings.

7) White Sox P Lucas Giolito (abdomen) is expected to miss at least two starts.

6) Seattle 4, Minnesota 3— Adam Frazier, Todd France had clutch hits in ninth inning as the Mariners get another one-run win. Since beginning of last season, Seattle is 33-19 in games decided by one run.

5) Guy named Rob Walton is expected to bid $4B to buy the Denver Broncos; he is the heir to Walmart fortune, and his cousin is married to Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke. Pretty wealthy family. Rob Walton has a net worth of $70B, that’s billion, with a B.

4) NFL teams are worth an average of $3-4B each; you really believe that people rich enough to own a team like that are going to be told who to hire as their coach?

Totally unsurprising that when the Tennessee Titans wanted to hire Mike Mularkey as head coach, they first had to hold sham interviews with minority candidates, to satisfy the Rooney Rule, which says minority candidates must be interviewed.

But they were sloppy, holding the sham interviews after they told people who they were going to hire. Seriously? In this day and age? Don’t they watch Law and Order reruns? The truth most always finds its way out into the public eye.

3) Angels 2, Astros 0— Noah Syndergaard threw 5.1 scoreless innings in his Angel debut. Houston was held to two singles, after hitting eight home runs in their first two games.

2) This doesn’t sound possible, but on the Atlanta Braves’ World Series rings, there are a total 755 diamonds on each one. How long before one of them shows up on Pawn Stars?

1) 8-team USFL kicks off play next weekend; they’re not going to have first down chains, they have a system like tennis uses, which measures whether a team made a first down or not. The footballs will have a chip in them, and it is a virtual replay system, which should be interesting to track.
