Monday’s 6-pack

NFL teams who are furthest under the salary cap:
$30,016,170— Carolina
$22,042,564— Indianapolis
$22,003,364— Houston
$21,356,303— Cleveland
$21,249,689— New Orleans
$20,015,450— Detroit

Quote of the Day
“Catchers like to call pitches they can’t hit.”
Lou Brock

Monday’s quiz
Who was the basketball coach at Kansas before Bill Self?

Sunday’s quiz
Chicago Bulls have had a player score 50+ points in a game 36 times; Michael Jordan had 30 of those 36 games.

Jimmy Butler is the only other player with more than one (2).

Friday’s quiz
Shannon Sharpe caught the longest TD pass in NFL postseason history, 96 yards in 2020.

***************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

13) Why I care more about my fantasy baseball team than the A’s:

There are 11 PLAYERS in the major leagues who are making more $$$ this year than the A’s ENTIRE TEAM!!!

You think I’m kidding?

Max Scherzer: $43.3M
Mike Trout: $37.1M
Anthony Rendon: $36.5M
Gerrit Cole: $36M
Jacob deGrom: $36M
Trevor Bauer: $35.3M
Carlos Correa: $35.1M
Stephen Strasburg: $35M
Nolan Arenado: $35M
Francisco Lindor: $34.1M
Corey Seager: $33M
all the Oakland A’s: $32.5M

By the way, A’s traded ace pitcher Sean Manaea to San Diego Sunday, for two minor leaguers, a pitcher and a middle infielder who is supposedly a good hitting prospect. Thrilling.

If you’re not going to try to win, sell the team. Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, some really rich guy who likes baseball (or making $$$) would buy it. This is ridiculous.

12) April figures to be an interesting month………
— Opening Day of baseball season
— NFL schedule comes out
— NFL Draft
— NBA playoffs
— NHL playoffs
— USFL starts in two weeks
— Masters is next week

11) This season when there are replay reviews, the umpire will have a mike and will tell the crowd what is going on, which is a good move by MLB.

10) Blue Jays reliever Jordan Romero sprained his ankle this week while walking his dog; football players must go nuts when they hear stuff like that. Who gets hurt walking their dog?

9) Sunday afternoon, Mets led Miami 8-4 in top of 9th, Marlins’ hitter has a full count, takes ball four, only he doesn’t know it. He stands there; the ump takes his mask off and tells the guy he can go to first base.

These stadiums have large scoreboards in the outfield, with the count displayed on them. Oy.

8) White Sox P Lance Lynn hurt his knee, is out at least four weeks.

7) Quote of the Day, part 2:
“Part of me was excited to coach Blaine Gabbert as the quarterback and prove to everybody, ‘Kiss my ass. He’s good.’ You know?”
Bruce Arians, who said he wouldn’t have retired had Tom Brady not come back to play

6) Tomas Satoransky plays for the Washington Wizards, his third team this season; he is scoring 3.3 ppg in 16 minutes/game. A role player who has lasted six years in the NBA.

Wednesday night against Orlando, Satoransky played 27:00, didn’t score a point, going 0-2 from the floor, but he had a hell of a game, grabbing 10 rebounds, passing out 13 assists, as Wizards whacked Orlando, 127-110. Not often a guy has a double/double, but no points.

You don’t have to score a lot to be a valuable player.

5) Watching Golden State play at home the other night, there are 12 seats between the Warriors’ bench and the scorers’ table, another 12 seats between the scorers’ table and the visitors’ bench.

Wonder what those 24 seats sell for, with the two coaches standing right in front of them? Has to be $2,500 or so a ticket. It is fairly amazing that there has never been an incident of some kind in those seats, and a lot of arenas are set up that way.

4) New England Patriots traded a 3rd-round draft pick to Miami for WR Davante Parker and a 5th-round pick. Interesting trade between division rivals; Patriots have been dreadful drafting receivers, so they traded for a WR they know is a good one.

3) Last two years, Tampa Bay is +18 in turnovers; the two years before that, they were minus-31. I’m told that quarterback is an important position.

New England was +10 in turnovers the last two years; they were +31 the two years before that, so in Tom Brady’s last four years in the NFL, his team is +49 in turnovers. In 65 games.

2) Butler hired Thad Matta as its new coach; Matta went 24-8 coaching Butler in 2000-01, then bolted to Xavier, and later to Ohio State. The man he replaced at Butler is Barry Collier, who is now the AD at Butler.

1) Kansas-Villanova game Saturday was 58 possessions, Jayhawks’ slowest-paced game in six years. Kansas still scored 1.4 points/possession, despite scoring zero points in transition.

Tuesday’s 6-pack

NFL teams who have the worst salary cap situation:
$738,607 under cap— Giants
$1,093,459— Buffalo
$1,485,010— San Francisco
$2,272,456— Tennessee
$4,557,165— Atlanta
$5,026,680— New England

Quote of the Day
“I’ll get to the bottom of this, if I have to go all the way to the top.”
Colonel Flagg, M*A*S*H

Tuesday’s quiz
Who was manager of the Seattle Mariners, last time they made the playoffs?

Monday’s quiz
Roy Williams was the basketball coach at Kansas before Bill Self; he was also the hoop coach at North Carolina before Hubert Davis.

Sunday’s quiz
Chicago Bulls have had a player score 50+ points in a game 36 times; Michael Jordan had 30 of those 36 games.

***************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Kansas 72, North Carolina 69:
— Tar Heels led 40-25 at halftime.
— For Kansas:
Braun and Wilson in first half: 1-13, two points.
Braun and Wilson in second half, 10-14, 25 points.
— UNC shot only 36% inside the arc.
— Carolina outrebounded Kansas 55-35

12) Last four years, Starling Marte played 449 games in the outfield, 448 of them in centerfield. Last year, Marte played 56 games in centerfield for Oakland, where one of his teammates was Mark Canha. Marte/Canha are now teammates with the Mets.

Canha played 134 games for Oakland LY, 23 of them in CF, which were before Marte came to the A’s.

In spring training this weekend, Marte was playing rightfield, Canha centerfield. Different people see things different ways, which makes the world a more interesting place.

11) Eight NFL teams don’t have a first round draft pick this year, so now the league is worried that ratings for the first night of the draft won’t be so good, since 25% of the league isn’t invested in the first round.

I root for the Rams, who never have a first round pick (last one was Jared Goff in 2016) but I’ll be watching the first round, if that makes anyone in New York City feel better.

10) NFL Draft is in Las Vegas this year; Raiders don’t have a pick until late in the third round, which could also tone down the excitement of the first night.

9) Saints/Eagles made a trade Monday, dealing seven draft picks, no actual players; Saints get the 16th/19th picks this year, Eagles get the 18th pick this year, plus a first round pick next year, a 2nd round pick in 2024.

8) Duke basketball assistant Nolan Smith bolts the Blue Devils to become Kenny Payne’s top assistant at Louisville, where Smith’s late father played ball.

7) Mike Trout got traded in my fantasy league over the weekend, second time in three years he got dealt. I’m curious how that will work out.

6) Want to win a bar bet? Who was the first major leaguer to hit three home runs on Opening Day?

Toronto’s George Bell, in 1988.

5) Last five defending champs in NCAA Tournament all lost on the first weekend:
2023— Kansas ??????
2022— Baylor lost in 2nd round
2020— Virginia lost in first round
2019— Villanova lost in 2nd round
2018— North Carolina lost in 2nd round
2017— Villanova lost in 2nd round

4) Here is what Washington will be paying QB Carson Wentz:
2022— $22M salary, $6.294 roster bonus
2023— $20M salary, $6.176 roster bonus
2024— $21M salary, $6.235 roster bonus

3) Detroit Tigers acquired OF Austin Meadows from Tampa Bay, for IF Isaac Paredes and a pick in July’s draft.

2) Is Hank Aaron the most underrated baseball player ever? You take away his 755 career home runs and he still had more hits than Wade Boggs.

1) Jim Nantz calls the Kansas-North Carolina game on national TV, now goes to Augusta and calls The Masters golf tournament this week, starting Thursday. Pretty good week for him.

Wednesday’s 6-pack

Odds to win The Masters:
10-1— Jon Rahm
12-1— Justin Thomas
14-1— Cameron Smith
16-1— DJohnson, Morikawa, McIlroy, Scheffler, Spieth
18-1— Viktor Hovland
20-1— Cantlay, Koepka, Schauffle

Quote of the Day
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is is the courage to continue that counts.”
Winston Churchill

Wednesday’s quiz
What fine actor played A’s manager Art Howe in Moneyball?

Tuesday’s quiz
Lou Piniella was manager of the Seattle Mariners, last time they made the playoffs, in 2001.

Monday’s quiz
Roy Williams was the basketball coach at Kansas before Bill Self; he was also the hoop coach at North Carolina before Hubert Davis.

********************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

13) Cleveland OF Will Benson hit an inside-park home and a triple in Tuesday’s game against Colorado, which brought up the question: Has anyone ever hit two inside-park home runs in the same game?

Turns out it has happened 10 times, all in the American League. Last time was October 4, 1986 when Twins’ SS Greg Gagne did it. Before that, the great Dick Allen had two inside-park homers in a 1972 game.

12) Because July 31 is a Sunday this year, MLB pushed the trading deadline back to August 2.

11) MLB has OK’d PitchCom, which will reduce the amount of time pitchers take getting signals from the catcher. Early feedback has been positive; it is expected to speed up games some.

10) Saint Peter’s just had a great run, the first 15-seed to make the Elite 8; Jersey City threw the team a freakin’ parade.

Now comes the bad news. As expected, coach Shaheen Holloway is going to coach Seton Hall, his alma mater, but then Tuesday, three Peacocks entered the transfer portal, which wasn’t expected. The new coach is going to have a mess on his hands.

9) There are now 1,165 names in the transfer portal; there are 358 D-I teams.

8) Coaching carousel:
— LaSalle hired 73-year old Fran Dunphy as its new coach; Dunphy has a 580-325 record as a head coach, at Penn/Temple.
— Cleveland State is going to hire Iowa State assistant Daniyal Robinson as its new coach.

7) Elon head coach Mike Schrage quit this week; he is expected to join Jon Scheyer’s staff at Duke.

6) North Carolina lost the national title game Monday night, after leading 40-25 at halftime; they beat Baylor in the second round, after blowing a 25-point lead with 10:20 left in game. Very unusual March run; Armando Bacot had 99 rebounds in six games.

5) Remy Martin scored 14 points in 21:00 off bench for Kansas in the title game; last year he bolted Arizona State and was going to jump to the NBA. ASU coach Bobby Hurley publicly backed Martin’s decision, but then Martin didn’t go to the NBA, he transferred to Kansas instead.

Arizona State went 14-17, Hurley was suspended for a game for going nuts on a ref after one especially hideous loss. Wonder what he thinks about Kansas winning the national title?

4) Baseball happenings:
— P Johnny Cueto signed with the White Sox
— Dodgers signed reliever Dellin Betances
— Bronx signed 1B Greg Bird

3) ESPN’s daytime lineup would be so much better if they went back to showing replays of poker tournaments and stopped with their hideous talk shows, orchestrated yelling with lot of words being exchanged, but nothing substantial being said.

2) Was scrolling thru the movie channels Tuesday and stumbled onto one I left off my best movie lists couple years ago: Searching for Bobby Fischer, a movie about a sportswriter who discovers that his 7-year old son is a chess prodigy.

Joe Mantegna, Laurence Fishburne, Ben Kingsley; a great cast. Excellent movie.

1) Why would any politician vote against capping the price of insulin? I can think of a reason, but I can’t think of a good reason. How do these people look their constituents in the eye?

Thursday’s 6-pack

Long drive leaders on the PGA Tour:
6) Wyndham Clark
T4) Joseph Bramlett
T4) Matthew Wolff
3) Jhonattan Vegas
2) Cameron Young
1) Cameron Champ

Quote of the Day
“Steph Curry’s the one that I wanna play with for sure, in today’s game. … I love everything about that guy. Lethal. When he get out his car, you better guard him right from the moment he pulls up to the arena.”
Lebron James

Thursday’s quiz
Where did Shaquille O’Neal play his college basketball?

Wednesday’s quiz
Philip Seymour Hoffman played A’s manager Art Howe in Moneyball.

Tuesday’s quiz
Lou Piniella was manager of the Seattle Mariners, last time they made the playoffs, in 2001.

***************************

Thursday’s Den: Happy Opening Day…….

13) Two Opening Day games were already postponed until Friday by weather; Boston-New York, Seattle-Minnesota.

12) Cincinnati Reds released OF Shogo Akiyama, eating $8M in process; Akiyama hit .224 for the Reds, with no homers and 21 RBIs in 142 games.

11) Cleveland Guardians signed 3B Jose Ramirez to a 5-year, $124M contract extension.

10) I said the other day the that #7-seed UConn in 2014 was the lowest-seeded team to win the national title in basketball; the 1985 Villanova Wildcats were a #8-seed- they upset Georgetown to win the national title that year.

Since today is Opening Day of baseball season, here is my starting nine of baseball movies:
9) League of Their Own— Tom Hanks manages a team in a female professional baseball league, with Madonna as an outfielder, Geena Davis as the catcher.

Janet Jones is a pitcher for Racine; she is now better known as Mrs Wayne Gretzky. Jon Lovitz is great as a scout for the league. David L Lander is an announcer; he is best known for playing Squiggy in the old Laverne & Shirley TV show.

8) Trouble With the Curve— Clint Eastwood is an aging baseball scout whose old-school ways are at odds with modern thinking. Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Amy Adams are also in this underrated movie.

7) Bad News Bears— Walter Matthau is a Little League coach in California who turns his team around by recruiting an old girlfriend’s daughter to be his team’s pitcher. Tatum O’Neal plays the pitcher; in real-life, her half-brother is Patrick O’Neal, who these days does pregame shows for the Angels and the Anaheim Ducks.

6) The Rookie— True story of a high school baseball coach in Texas who tells his team he’ll try out for the major leagues if the team makes the playoffs. The team makes the playoffs and the coach winds up in the majors; story would be a little sketchy, except it is true.

5) The Natural— An older ballplayer comes out of nowhere to help a struggling team make the playoffs. Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs; Wilford Brimley is great as the manager of the New York Knights. Movie was filmed in Buffalo, where the Bills used to play before they built Rich Stadium.

4) Little Big League— 12-year old kid inherits the Minnesota Twins after his grandfather dies; he then names himself the manager. Shaky premise but a good movie, with several big leaguers in it.

Ashley Crow plays the kid’s mom; in real life, her son is Pete Crow-Armstrong, a first round pick of the Mets in 2020— he is now in the Cubs’ farm system.

T3) Bull Durham— Susan Sarandon is a baseball groupie who has an affair with one player every season; when this movie was made a long time ago, the Durham Bulls were a Class A farm club. These days, they are the Tampa Bay Rays’ AAA farm team, with better pitchers than Tim Robbins.

T3) Major League— Owner of the Cleveland Indians puts together a purposely terrible team so they’ll lose and she can move the team to Miami. Movie was made before anyone realized that a baseball team in Miami was a bad idea.

Bob Uecker steals the show as the team’s radio announcer; Charlie Sheen is the relief pitcher, Tom Berenger the veteran catcher.

2) For Love of the Game— A Hall of Fame pitcher at the tail end of his career saves his best game for last. Kevin Costner is the pitcher; JK Simmons is the manager, John C Reilly is the catcher.

1) Moneyball— I’m an A’s fan; what did you expect? Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, GM of a major league team that succeeds despite having a cheap owner. 20 years later and the same stuff is still going on.
