Friday’s 6-pack

Teams who get highest %age of their points on 3-pointers:
2) Evansville
3) Cal-San Diego
4) San Francisco
5) Wofford
6) Rice
8) Florida International

Quote of the Day
“(Matt Ryan) loves the game. He loves the Falcons. He loves the city, and he wants to stay here. That’s a decision the coach and general manager will make. But we have no reason to think he won’t continue to be playing quarterback for us.”
Falcons’ owner Arthur Blank

Friday’s quiz
Where did James Harden play his college basketball?

Thursday’s quiz
Kawhi Leonard played his college basketball at San Diego State

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, where Kevin Costner played the GM of the Cleveland Browns, Denis Leary played the coach of the Browns.

********************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with weekend here……..

13) 76ers traded Ben Simmons to Brooklyn for James Harden; Philly also sent Seth Curry and Andre Drummond to the Nets, along with two first-round draft picks. Paul Millsaps goes to the 76ers as part of the deal.

Here’s the thing: Seth Curry is married to Doc Rivers’ daughter, which has to make things just a little awkward in the Rivers household this weekend.

As part of the trade, Harden opts into his $47.3M deal for next year.

12) Think about that: next year, Harden will make $47.3M for playing 82 basketball games.

Secondary question: Does this mean Simmons will actually play now? He hasn’t played a minute yet this season. If the 76ers hadn’t traded him, he would’ve forfeited $24M this season.

11) After the trade, 76ers dropped from 12-1 to 7-1 to win the NBA title.

10) NFL announced that next season, they’ll have games in Germany, Mexico, England.

9) Was listening to a fantasy baseball podcast the other night; they said that Statcast posted that if Marcus Semien had played for Texas last year, he would’ve hit 32 home runs, instead of the 45 he hit for the Blue Jays, that’s what a pitcher’s ballpark they have in Arlington now.

Blue Jays played home games in Dunedin, Buffalo, Toronto last year; Dunedin/Buffalo are great hitters’ parks.

8) Wonder if ballplayers ever listen to these fantasy podcasts, hearing nerds like myself discuss their stats and projecting how they’ll do in the coming season.

7) The baseball commissioner hasn’t delayed the start of spring training yet; he did say that the universal DH is a done deal, so that helps fantasy baseball owners make some plans.

If you have JT Realmuto on your team, it is safe to assume that he’ll DH most days he isn’t behind the plate. Yon Gomes will probably be the Cubs’ DH, Robinson Cano the Mets’ DH.

Some teams will use the DH slot to rest starters, give them a day off from the field, but in any event, the universal DH is a positive development.

6) There was a tine, 12-15 years ago, where I spent my summer vacation at Disney’s Wide World of Sports watching the national AAU basketball tournament for 12 hours a day or so- saw ton of really good players, learned some stuff.

When I got back to work, friend of mine asked me what I did on my vacation; got a very strange look when I told her. Hey, everyone likes different stuff.

One day I’m sitting there and the two guys next to me are talking; one was an SEC head coach, the other guy was an assistant at a much smaller D-I school. The head coach wanted to schedule a buy game against the smaller school; he told the assistant to tell his boss: if they came to play the SEC school, then he would help the smaller school get a recruit that would help their team.

Never heard a name mentioned, so don’t know how this all turned out with the recruit, but the smaller school did go play that game.

5) Southern Conference is an underrated league in college basketball; they’re the #12 league in Ken Pomeroy’s rankings. Last seven years, the #1 seed won their conference tournament every time, which is very unusual, especially since the tournament is played at a neutral site.

4) Iowa 110, Maryland 87— Not a lot of defense played here; mentioned yesterday how the Louisville head coaching job will be an interesting hire this spring, so will the Maryland job.

Not sure why they fired Mark Turgeon, but they did. The next coach has a rebuild ahead of him.

3) Michigan 82, Purdue 58— Purdue is 21-0 when it scores 70+ points, 0-4 when it doesn’t. No idea what to make of the Boilermakers as far as March Madness goes; the four starters other than Jaden Ivey shot a combined 7-20 from the floor.

2) Right now, 30 states have legalized sports betting, but California isn’t one of them; in 2021, American sportsbooks accepted nearly $60B in bets, generating more than $4.3B in revenue.

California voters will have sports betting on their ballot this fall; very competitive as to which vendors get the lucrative contracts.

1) Very happy to report that Dick Vermeil will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer. Coach Vermeil took downtrodden franchises in Philly/St Louis to Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XXXIV with the Rams. Congratulations coach!!!

Monday’s Den: Random thoughts on an excellent night…….

I had a really interesting den ready to post today, but it’ll have to wait for another day, because Sunday night, the Rams won the Super Bowl!!!! Second Super Bowl title for the Rams, their first in LA, and very dramatic.

Rams went 0-3 in November, were 7-4; the naysayers were having a field day. We live in a fickle society, so you have to win to keep the rats from jumping off the ship, and boy, from December 1st on, the Rams did nothing but win, often by the skin of their teeth.

Last time the Rams won it all, this blog didn’t exist, so hopefully I won’t be too obnoxious here.

First of all, the game and its trappings:
The game
— 15 plays, 72 yards, 4:48, the game-winning drive. Tremendous. Cooper Kupp (of course) scored the game-winning TD with 1:25 left.

Rams didn’t have Robert Woods, Odell Beckham Jr missed the second half, and LA’s top three tight ends were out; Brycen Hopkins (#88) came out of nowhere to catch four passes for 47 yards— he caught one pass in the regular season, as the Rams 4th-string tight end.

GM Les Snead deserves a huge heap of credit— more on him later.

— Sean McVay is now 55-26 in regular season, 7-3 in playoff games. Five years, two Super Bowls, coaching a franchise that before he got there, hadn’t had a winning season in 13 years. Whatever they pay him, it ain’t enough.

— First 4:41 of the third quarter was an unmitigated disaster; Cincinnati threw a 75-yard TD pass on first play of third quarter, then picked off a pass and kicked a field goal- they led 20-13 with 10:19 left in the third quarter. Things didn’t look good.

— There was a weird stretch in the second half, before the game-winning drive where both teams punted three times in a row; Rams ran nine plays for nine yards, Cincinnati 11 plays for no yards.

— Matthew Stafford was 26-40 for 283 yards and three TD’s; now people can start thinking about his chances to eventually be a Hall of Famer. He was awesome this season.

There was a sporting goods store in Detroit selling “Detroit Rams” t-shirts, that’s how popular Stafford is after playing 12 years for the Lions.
Imagine what he must be thinking right now?
Imagine what Lion fans must be thinking right now?

— Cooper Kupp caught eight passes for 92 yards and two TD’s; the guy went to college at freakin’ Eastern Washington, a I-AA football program. He is a great receiver.

— 3rd down conversions: Rams 6-15, Cincinnati 3-14

— Aaron Donald, Von Miller, Leonard Floyd, they put lot of pressure on Joe Burrow, sacked him seven times.

I’m standing in my living room watching the last series, and I’m as confident as I’ve ever been that the defense ain’t getting scored upon, and sure enough, they shut the Bengals down.

— Total of only six penalties were accepted in this game; football should always be officiated this way, though the facemark penalty on the long Cincinnati TD should’ve been called.

— The wife of Rams’ WR Van Jefferson was taken to the hospital during the game; she had a baby, so really big day for the Jeffersons.

— Rams’ safety Taylor Rapp proposed to his girlfriend on the field after the game; she said yes. She gets an engagement ring; he gets a Super Bowl ring.

— Potentially expensive day for Odell Beckham Jr, who caught two passes for 52 yards and a TD; he hurt his knee in second quarter. A doctor on Twitter thought it was a torn ACL, which won’t help his chance to cash in as a free agent this spring.

— Rams’ GM Les Snead deserves a huge pat on the back for all this: quality depth wins in the NFL; Snead has done an exceptional job of fortifying the Rams’ roster, while dealing first round draft picks for proven stars.

Skeptics were everywhere; like I said, our society is fickle. After the game, people on NFL Network were debating whether Les Snead’s approach will spread around the league. Back in November, they were thrashing the guy for trading draft picks.

— This is I know; on Thursday September 8, the Rams will host the NFL season opener.

Trappings:
— Too damn many commercials and too much hoopla before the game; the first two or three series of the games were smothered by commercials. I know the NFL exists to make $$$, but good grief, has to be tough for the players to get a rhythm for the game.

— I mute TV during all the Ram games, so didn’t hear Dwayne Johnson’s act before kickoff; was getting antsy waiting for the freakin’ game to start, can only imagine what the players are thinking while they’re waiting for the biggest game of their lives while hijinks are going on all around them.

— John Calipari just showed up on an episode of Billions; brilliant casting, and he’s good, giving the hedge fund traders a pep talk.

— Don’t watch the Super Bowl commercials, don’t care about them, I know some people do, I do wonder how effective they are; when other teams play in the Super Bowl, hardly watch the commercials. Use timeouts to get food or hit the men’s room or play word games on my phone.

— Halftime was long, over a half hour; do players hate this? Cincinnati’s kicker stayed out on the field and watched halftime. Does it help coaches make adjustments?

— Now we look forward to the 2022 football season, but we’ll get into that down the road- the draft, the schedule release, free agency and trades. Will be an interesting offseason, for sure.

“The most competitive business in the world”

NFL has 32 teams, some are run better than others- things have to break just right and to win a championship. This year, things broke just right for the good guys.

Tonight, Armadillo World HQ is a freakin’ happy place.

Quote of the Day
“Someone once told me: The hardest thing about winning the Super Bowl is you wake up the next morning and it’s the next season. It’s over. And to be fair, I think that’s daunting to some degree, when you wake up this morning and you realize, ‘I’ve got to go do it all over again,’ and you don’t have the energy. So I think the talk is actually natural. When you look at someone like Aaron Donald and what he’s accomplished, this was obviously a legacy piece.”
Rams COO Kevin Demoff

Tuesday’s quiz
Bob Huggins is best known for coaching Cincinnati/West Virginia; in between those two stops, he coached somewhere else, for one season. Where was it?

Monday’s quiz
In Matthew Stafford’s 12 years in Detroit, he played for three head coaches:
— Jim Schwartz 29-52
— Jim Caldwell 36-30
— Matt Patricia 13-29-1

Sunday’s quiz
Baltimore Ravens have won two Super Bowls; Trent Dilfer/Joe Flacco were the two QB’s that won them.

*******************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) On June 14, 1974, Nolan Ryan walked 10, struck out 19 batters in 13 innings in a 4-3 Angels win that lasted 15 innings. Ryan threw 235 pitchers in this game; 235!!!!!!!!

Ryan had a 3-1 lead in ninth inning, but Carl Yastrzemski hit a 2-run homer to tie the game.

Luis Tiant pitched the whole game for the Red Sox.

12) So, when is spring training starting? Too bad the baseball owners/players are all rich nitwits who can’t agree what day it is. They need to end the lockout and get spring training started.

11) They had a draft of players for the NBA All-Star Game last week; how would you like to be the last guy picked for that game?

When I was a kid, I wasn’t usually the last guy picked, but I was closer to the bottom than the top and it sucks. Imagine making $47.2M a season and being the last guy picked? Well, guess making $47.2M would soften the blow some, but still it sucks.

Enough said.

10) Huge overlap in seasons now; I’m still basking in the glow of the Super Bowl, while there is a college hoop game on TV and I’m listening to a podcast on fantasy baseball. Only 26 days until Selection Sunday, 44 days until Opening Day of baseball.

9) MLB Network is televising a college baseball tournament this weekend; not sure how that will be, but some baseball is better than none.

8) John Calipari had a cameo on Showtime’s Billions Sunday night; he gave the hedge fund traders a pep talk, telling them to put their first million dollars away, for security. Once you have security, he says, you lose your fear of failure.

“I’ve had 52 players drafted in the NBA, have 35 players in the league now……”

A terrific 1:49 scene, very well done, complete with Calipari waving his national title ring in the air, to impress the traders. Excellent scene.

7) Underdogs are now 10-5 ATS the last fifteen Super Bowls.

6) Last eight Super Bowls, the team that won the coin toss lost the game.

5) Kirk Cousins’ salary cap number next year is $45M. Oy.

4) February 2, Syracuse won 89-82 at NC State; three Syracuse subs played a total of 20:00, took one shot the whole game (it missed). None of the starters scored 20 points, which is weird; they all scored between 16-19 points.

You sit in a 2-3 zone, have to rest some on defense; Boeheim’s two sons played 38-40 minutes. This will be a good team to avoid betting on in the ACC tournament, once you get past the first day.

3) NBC is re-booting Law & Order February 24; it is supposed to be pretty much similar to what it was it went off the air 12 years ago. Sam Waterston/Anthony Anderson return to their old roles; one terrific addition to the cast will be Jeffrey Donovan, who was great on an old USA Network series Burn Notice, which ran from 2007-13.

2) Prediction made without judgment: NFL will eventually award a 3rd-round draft pick to teams who hire a minority head coach. NFL needs more teams to hire minority head coaches; a 3rd-round pick is a damn good incentive.

Joe Montana, Terrell Davis, Cooper Kupp were all 3rd-round picks.

1) Sam Ryder made a hole-in-one on the 16th hole at the Phoenix Open Saturday, the hole where 50,000 people watch in a stadium-like setting. Hundreds of water bottles were thrown on the green in celebration. Seeing how the tournament was sponsored by Waste Management, didn’t take long to clean up the bottles, but it was a fun thing to see.

Wednesday’s Den: Conference tournament trends……..

College tournaments aren’t that far away; here are some trends for how teams have done in their tournaments.

13) Since 2004, Gonzaga is 37-4 in the WCC tournament; since 2010, Saint Mary’s is 17-9. BYU is 9-8 in their last 17 tourney games.

Other than those three teams, not lot of wins left in the WCC.

12) Despite playing the Big East tournament on its home floor at Madison Square Garden, since 2003, St John’s is 8-14 in Big East tournament.

Similar thing for UNLV, which hosts the Mountain West event; since 2009, Rebels are 11-13 in conference tournament games- they last won the tournament in 2009.

11) Since 2013, Iona is 24-3 in MAAC tournament games, 17-1 since 2016.

On other hand, Marist is 1-9 in last nine MAAC tourneys.

10) Since 2003, under five different coaches, VCU is 34-14 in conference tournament games.

9) Cincinnati is 10-2 in its last four conference tournaments, winning two of them.

8) Last eight conference tournaments, George Washington has gone W-L seven times.

7) 11 of the last 12 years, San Diego State has won at least two games in the Mountain West tournament; since 2009, they’re 27-9 in the conference tournament.

6) Last four years, Utah State is 10-2 in Mountain West tournament.

5) San Jose State is 0-8 in its last eight Mountain West tournaments, with last seven losses all by 13+ points.

4) From 2012-14, Louisville went 10-0 in winning three straight conference tournaments; since then, Cardinals are 2-5 in conference tournament games.

3) Last five years, Oklahoma is 0-4 in Big X tournament games.

2) Since 2015, Arizona is 11-2 in Pac-12 tournament games; since 2009, Washington State is 1-10 in tournament games.

1) Since 2015, Cal-Irvine is 13-4 in Big West tournament games; last five years, Hawaii is 0-4.
