Wednesday’s 6-pack

— Texas Tech 77, Texas 64— Coach Beard loses in his return to Lubbock.
— Michigan State 65, Maryland 63— Spartans blew 15-point lead, won it with 0:01.5 left.
— North Carolina 90, Louisville 83, OT— Bacot had 19 points, 22 rebounds.
— Auburn 100, Alabama 81— Auburn was 31-39 on foul line; lot of foul shots.
— Northwestern 79, Rutgers 78, OT— Wildcats blew a 52-28 lead, still got a win.
— Davidson 81, St Bonaventure 76— Wildcats made 12-28 on the arc.

Quote of the Day
“We don’t have the same funding resources as some of these schools do for these NIL deals. It’s basically dealing with different salary caps. Now we have a sport that has completely different salary caps and some of these schools have, whatever, five to 10 times more than everybody else in what they can pay the players. I know nobody uses those phrases, but that is what it is.”
Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin

Wednesday’s quiz
Where did Charles Barkley play his college basketball?

Tuesday’s quiz
Rams have played in four Super Bowls, with four different head coaches; Ray Malavasi, Dick Vermeil, Mike Martz, Sean McVay.

Monday’s quiz
Ken Anderson, Boomer Esiason started for the Bengals in their other two Super Bowls.

****************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings………

13) Football is the only sport where the pro game is shorter than the college game; clocks stop after first downs in college. College teams run more average plays in a game than NFL teams do, which is big reason why turnovers are so critical. There aren’t that many drives in an NFL game.

Rams had eight drives Sunday, 49ers had nine (not counting kneel-downs at end of half). Rams threw an INT in red zone on one drive, dropped a TD pass on another, two wasted chances that created their problems entering the 4th quarter.

Turnovers can be random/luck-related, which is part of reason why handicapping football is so difficult.

12) Minnesota Vikings are interviewing Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh Wednesday; rumor is they want him to be their next coach. 49ers assistant DeMeco Ryans turned down a chance for a second interview, signaling that he thinks Harbaugh-to-Minnesota is a done deal.

NFL teams have to interview a certain amount of minority candidates (Rooney Rule) for head coach openings, but if a guy thinks he has no shot at getting the job, he can turn down the interview. Younger guys take the interview, just to get experience in the interview process.

First three coach openings this month have all been filled by coaches with offense background.

11) Former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores is suing the NFL and three times for racial discrimination; apparently he has given up on ever being a head coach again, if he is suing the whole damn league.

Flores went 24-25 in three years with Miami, never made the playoffs, even though his last two teams went 10-6/9-8.

Here’s the problem Flores has:
— Week 17, 2020, Dolphins lost 56-26 in Buffalo
— Week 17, 2021, Dolphins lost 34-3 at Tennessee.

When your team goes in the tank at big moments in critical games, it doesn’t look good for the coach. NFL teams are worth an average of $3B each; they’re entitled to hire who they damn well please to be their head coach.

Getting along well with others is part of being a good coach; there were lot of rumors that Flores/Miami’s front office were often at odds about their jobs.

10) Tom Brady officially retired Tuesday, meaning that Canton, OH will be a good place to avoid in August 2027, when Roethlisberger/Brady get inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I was in Canton for the 2001 Hall of Fame events, to see Jack Youngblood/Jackie Slater get inducted. Marv Levy also got in that year, so lot of Buffalo fans were there and Lynn Swann got in, so lot of Pittsburgh fans showed up.

Steeler fans were insufferable that day, ragging on the Buffalo fans because they’ve never won a Super Bowl- they were really annoying, so could be lot of trash talk between Steeler/Patriot fans in 2027. The “annoying meter” will be off the charts, both ways.

9) Buccaneers will have $32M of dead money next year, which is a salary cap charge for a player no longer on a team’s roster, with Brady retiring before June 2.Tampa Bay can get some salary cap relief by keeping him on the roster until June- that’s what the Saints did when Drew Brees retired.

8) Understood that the transfer portal is a way of life in college sports now, but when I see a kid playing for his third school in four years, it makes me squeamish about the player.

James Akinjo played two years at Georgetown, then bolted to Arizona, then bolted to Baylor.

Georgetown lost its last seven games before Akinjo bolted; Arizona went 5-6 in its last 11 games LY, then Akinjo bolted and the Wildcats changed coaches. Arizona is 17-2 this season with a new coach and almost entirely-new roster.

Now the highly-skilled Akinjo is at Baylor, which won the national title last year. Bears are 19-3 this season, 7-2 in conference; will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

7) Penn State 90, Iowa 86, 2OT:
— Penn State shot 57% inside arc, Iowa 35%
— Hawkeyes tipped in an airball at buzzer to force OT.
— Iowa lost three of its last four games.

6) Wyoming 84, Colorado State 78, OT:
— This was really good game; Mountain West is better this year.
— Maldonado scored 35 points, had 7 assists for Wyoming
— Wyoming played only one sub more than 7:00, at high altitude.

5) NC-Wilmington is on an incredible run; Seahawks started the season #277 on KenPom’s rankings; they were picked to finish last in the CAA by Blue Ribbon Yearbook, after going 38-76 the previous four years, 18-43 in conference games.

After starting this season 3-5, UNCW has gone on a 12-0 run- they were underdogs in eight of the 12 games, going 11-0 against the spread (one game was against an NAIA team). Now the Seahawks are up to #222, are have a 2-game lead in the CAA- they’ll still have to win the CAA tournament to get into March Madness, but they’re having a great season.

4) If you’ve got an extra $3B hanging around, the Denver Broncos are for sale. Last NFL team that was sold were the Carolina Panthers, who went for $2.2B- Broncos are said to be worth more than the Panthers, so the deal should be around $3B.

3) Pitt-West Virginia will open their college football season against each other next September , the regional rivals’ first meeting since 2011.

2) QB Caleb Williams finally decided to bolt to USC, after leaving Oklahoma when Lincoln Riley skipped town to coach the Trojans. Wisconsin tried very hard to lure Williams to Madison, but what 20-year old passer chooses Madison over Tinseltown?

1) MLB Network showed Game 7 of the 1965 World Series Tuesday, Twins-Dodgers, Sandy Koufax against Jim Kaat. Lot of great players in the game, which was played in the daytime (the night World Series game was in 1971).

Ray Scott broadcast the first 4.5 innings, Vin Scully the last 4.5; two great announcers. Lot of great players: Koufax-Drysdale-Oliva-Killebrew-Kaat.

Earl Battey caught for the Twins that day; his grandson plays basketball for Colorado now.

TV coverage of baseball is so much better now; weren’t many graphics back then. No one was talking about pitch counts or defensive positioning. Was fun to watch it; I was five years old back then— game was in bacl/white, that’s how old I am. LOL

Monday’s 6-pack

Six top prospects for the Arizona Diamondbacks:
1) Cprbin Carroll, OF
2) Jordan Lawlar, SS
3) Alek Thomas, OF
4) Geraldo Perdomo, SS
5) Blake Walston, P
6) Ryne Nelson, P

Quote of the Day
” … It was like, ‘Well if I can get a swing on it and I can hit it then why would I take a drop?’ You’re never over … a 65-foot cliff. So it’s an unusual situation, normally if you’re walking into a hazard, you see a ball, you hit it out. [Caddie] Michael [Greller] hated it. He tried to talk me out of it three times. I don’t blame him, looking back. I’m just glad I made the par to make it worth it because I don’t think I would have made par with a drop, but if I made bogey it would have really not been worth it”
Jordan Spieth, after hitting a shot from an awkward lie on Saturday

Monday’s quiz
In the last ten NCAA tournaments, how many times has Gonzaga been a #1-seed?

Sunday’s quiz
In the movie Dave, Kevin Kline played the President of the United States.

Saturday’s quiz
Marisa Tomei played Joe Pesci’s girlfriend in My Cousin Vinny.

***************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

13) Selection Sunday is only five weeks away; lot of studying to do between now and then (and packing for my first vacation in 2.5 years!!!). Anyway, the biggest question I have right now is, how good is Gonzaga?

— Gonzaga is 19-2, 8-0 in WCC; their three road wins in WCC were by 32-30-33 points.
— Beat Texas by 12, UCLA by 20, Texas Tech by 14; lost to Duke, Alabama.
— Zags are shooting 62.7% inside the arc, 37.9% on the arc.
— They defend well without forcing lot of turnovers; they gave up 84-91 points in the losses.

WCC is the #9 conference right now; some good teams, but it ain’t the SEC or Big X.

One of the many things we’ll be following the next few weeks.

12) USC basketball coach Andy Enfield played college ball a D-III Johns Hopkins; in his career, he made 431 of 466 free throws, which is 92.5%, the best %age ever.

Must be frustrating this year; Enfield was a great shooter, is a really good shooting coach, but this year’s Trojans are shooting 63.7% on the foul line, 351st out of 358 D-I teams.

11) People bust on the Rams because they trade all their first-round draft picks (for proven stars) but when you draft well and develop players, the system works.
— Nick Scott, starting safety— 7th round draft pick in 2019
— Travin Howard, starting LB— 7th round draft pick in 2018
— Kendall Blanton, tight end— undrafted free agent in 2019

Having a great GM is just as important as having a great coach; Rams have both, with Les Snead and Sean McVay.

10) Nuggets 124, Nets 104:
— Nikola Jokic had a triple-double, his 14th this season, 71st of his career, only six behind the great Wilt Chamberlain on that list. If you’re mentioned in the same sentence as Wilt, you’re pretty damn good.

Meanwhile, Nets have lost eight games in a row, are 2-9 without Kevin Durant in lineup.

9) Staying in Denver, Denver Broncos are for sale— guy who is a financial advisor for Denver in the deal is Steve Greenberg, son of baseball Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg.

Steve Greenberg was Fay Vincent’s deputy commissioner 30 years ago; he was instrumental in Denver getting a baseball expansion team (Colorado Rockies).

8) Los Angeles Clippers have won nine games this year when trailing by 10+ points; they’ve won four games after trailing by 20+, which is most in the NBA.
— Good news- They’re spunky and competitive
— Bad news- They fall behind a lot.

7) In the last few weeks, Michigan’s football coach tried pretty hard to become an NFL head coach; they’ve lost their offensive coordinator, and this weekend, they lost their defensive coordinator. Not a good sign for the Wolverines’ immediate future.

6) Niagara 80, Iona 71— Gaels’ first loss in 12 MAAC games. Better now than in March; they’ll need to win the MAAC tournament to get into March Madness for sixth straight time.

5) Loyola Chi 71, Missouri State 62:
— Loyola held Isiaih Mosley to 12 points; he had 40 in their first meeting.
— Ramblers lead MVC by game over Northern Iowa/Drake.

4) Wyoming 61, Fresno State 59:
— Cowboys won 4th game in row; they’re 10-1 in last 11 games.
— Wyoming’s last five wins were all by 7 or less points.

3) Providence 71, Georgetown 52:
— Hoyas led 30-27 at halftime.
— Friars won seven in row, 15 of last 16 games.
— Georgetown has lost 11 games in a row; no idea where they’ll turn for a head coach if they decide to fire Patrick Ewing, the best player in Georgetown history. Hoyas are a mess, and are 26-54 in Big East games under Ewing.

2) Miami Dolphins hired Yale graduate Mike McDaniel as their new head coach; he comes from the 49ers, he has a 15-year coaching resume, but was 49ers’ OC for only one year.

Nine head coach openings; seven have been filled, all by Caucasians, as NFL teams give the middle finger to Brian Flores and his lawsuit. Saints/Texans are the last two teams with a head coach opening. Roger Goodell’s press conference this week should be very interesting if neither one of those teams hire a minority head coach.

1) August 1, 1986, the first time I ever stepped foot inside a casino. Pretty good day; I was visiting my sister in Los Angeles and we drove thru the desert to Las Vegas, where it was 112 degrees when we showed up. Stepped into a sportsbook and my head was spinning; sports/numbers are my thing. This was heaven on earth.

I go up to the counter to bet on the Mets, who were playing the Montreal Expos- can’t remember who was pitching for the Mets, but Floyd Youmans was pitching for Montreal. Give the guy my bet and he is smiling:

“Great pick buddy, but the game started 90 minutes ago.”

I had forgotten to set my watch to the western time zone; game was in the 5th inning.

Whoops.

Quote of the Day
“It’s all over the place. It can get hot because we’re passionate about this. I’m passionate about finding a way to address the issues, and I’m passionate about the sport. If that means someone raises their voice or uses a word that is four letters long, so be it. But ultimately we’re meeting, we’re talking. Sometimes it’s prettier than others.”
Pitcher Andrew Miller, talking about the MLB labor negotiations

9) Will either team score in first 6:30 of the game?
Yes even, No -120

8) Will either team score in last 2:00 of first half?
Yes -310, No +260

Wednesday’s 6-pack

Six top prospects for the Baltimore Orioles:
1) Adley Rutschman, C
2) Grayson Rodriguez, P
3) DL Hall, P
4) Gunnar Henderson, SS
5) Colton Cowser, OF
6) Jordan Westburg, SS

Quote of the Day
“We all run our own race, whatever that may be. It’s part of the journey and this year obviously was a tough experience, winning three games and all that, but it’s all part of the journey. My time will come, whenever that may be, to get another crack at it.”
Jared Goff

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, where Kevin Costner played the GM of the Cleveland Browns, who played the coach of the Browns?

Tuesday’s quiz
NCIS star Mark Harmon was a quarterback at UCLA.

Monday’s quiz
In last ten NCAA tournaments, Gonzaga has been a #1-seed four times.

******************************

Wednesday’s Den: mid-week musings……..

13) Arkansas 80, Auburn 76 OT:
— #1 team in country loses a tough game, ending their 19-game win streak.
— Auburn led by 5 with 2:40 left to play.
— Foul line: Arkansas 26-32, Auburn 8-17
— After this game ended, students stormed the court; Auburn’s team had very little protection as they tried to get to the locker room. This was a potentially dangerous thing; Arkansas needs to do better to protect its guests.

12) When the conference tournaments start in a few weeks, obviously teams have to win three or four days in a row to get into the NCAA Tournament. You need some depth to get thru games 3-4 days in a row.

Here are a few teams that lack depth, and may struggle to win their conference tournament because of that:
#358 in bench minutes- St Bonaventure
#357- Oakland
#356- Wright State
#353- Toledo
#351- North Texas

11) Why would anyone trade for Ben Simmons? Guy is very talented, one of the best passers I’ve ever seen, but your best players have to be good guys, team guys, not entitled, selfish people who care only about themselves.

Simmons hasn’t played a minute this year and he’s healthy; he’s offended because the 76ers’ coach didn’t fly cross-country to beg him to play this season. He’s opted out of $24M this year because his feelings got hurt (he still gets $8M this year for doing nothing)

Four years ago, Showtime aired a documentary about Simmons, which was filmed after his one college year, but before the NBA Draft; he didn’t come across well.

Four years with the 76ers, they won lot of regular season games, but went 19-19 in playoff games and never got the Eastern Conference finals. One year at LSU and they didn’t even get into the NCAA Tournament.

You pay someone $30M a year, you want a team leader and Simmons doesn’t seem to be one.

10) After the NCAA Tournament, we’ll get into this more, but there will be lot of conference shuffling next year. Conference USA will look almost totally different; CAA is adding three teams, lot of the mid-major leagues are juggling teams.

Loyola Chi is going to the A-14, which becomes the A-15 I guess.

9) Major league umpire Phil Cuzzi was on MLB Network the other day; he said he’s worked two no-hitters behind the plate and in both games, he wasn’t aware that the pitcher had a no-hitter until the last batter.

Not sure how that happens; these stadiums have very large scoreboards, but he concentrates on his job I guess, and wasn’t aware of it.

8) Purdue 84, Illinois 68:
— Boilers sweep Illinois; this was a pretty good beating.
— One of the newer things I try to do now is identify the legit NBA prospects who are still in college, and then lean on them in March. Purdue’s Jaden Ivey seems like one of those guys, but I’m not a big Matt Painter fan. Purdue has size and some diverse scorers, though, and that wins lot of games in March.

7) Wyoming 78, Utah State 76 OT:
— Cowboys won five games in row, four by 2 points or in OT.
— Last six years, Wyoming was 34-68 in conference games; now they’re 20-3, 9-1 in league and Jeff Linder deserves some mention for National Coach of the Year.

6) NFL coach stuff:
— Saints named Dennis Allen their new coach
— Texans named Lovie Smith their new coach
— Green Bay named Rich Bisaccia their special teams coach
— Giants named Don Martindale their defensive coordinator

5) It is amazing to me that there are still states where high school basketball doesn’t have a shot clock. Basketball without shot clocks can be strangled by stubborn coaches who won’t come out of zone defenses, and by coaches who refuse to play against zones (if they’re ahead).

In the late 70’s, there was a Duke-North Carolina game that was 7-0 at halftime. Seriously.

Putting the shot clock into college ball was a great move that helped make the game a lot more popular.

4) If you like to wager on pro golf, note that Patrick Cantlay is 97-under par in his last five tournaments, with a birdie-or-better % of 34.4%.

3) Washington Wizards’ star Bradley Beal is out for the year, with a left wrist injury.

2) Colorado Rockies extended manager Bud Black’s contract thru the 2023 season.

1) Dodgers’ P Trevor Bauer will not be criminally charged by Los Angeles prosecutors after a woman charged him with assault/other stuff, so now the big question is, what do the Dodgers do with him. Will they cut him? Trade him? Play him?

Bauer hasn’t committed a crime and the Dodgers owe him $64M over the next two seasons, but the baseball commissioner, who is currently involved with trying to screw up the sport with its labor dysfunction, has the autonomy to hand out suspensions under the domestic violence policy, so Bauer could still be suspended this season.

CHICAGO is 0-11 ATS (-11 Units) in road games against excellent power play teams - scoring on > 19% of their chances in the current season.

DALLAS are 7-0 ATS (7.3 Units) in home games when playing against a good team (Win Pct. 60% to 75%) in the current season.

Thursday’s 6-pack

Six top teams in roster continuity (of teams we track here):
1) Southern Utah
4) South Dakota State
6) Appalachian State
7) St Bonaventure
8) North Dakota State
9) Fairfield

Quote of the Day
“I really like him. I’m really excited. I’m really excited for the future. I’ve spoken with him a couple of times, really just impressed by who he is. I think, personality-wise, we’re going to gel really well. I think we’re pretty similar. Just knowing he played the position.”

Wednesday’s quiz

Tuesday’s quiz
NCIS star Mark Harmon played college football at UCLA.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) SMU 85, Houston 83:
— Houston’s first loss in ten AAC games; they had won 12 games in a row.
— Mustangs made 12-23 on arc; they’re 14-2 in their last 16 games.
— SMU starts five seniors; this win will carry weight on Selection Sunday.

12) Oklahoma 70, Texas Tech 55:
— Sooners were 13-28 on arc, Tech 2-17.
— Only second win in last nine games for Oklahoma.
— Last two games, Red Raiders are 6-38 on the arc.

11) We talked some the other day about Marquette coach Shaka Smart, how he’s struggled in NCAA Tournament games the last few years, but he’s done very well in conference tournaments, going 17-7 as a head coach in conference tournament games, winning three tournaments.

10) Over the last eight years, six different schools won the Mountain West tournament, and none of them was UNLV, which hosts the tournament. San Diego State/Utah State split the last four years- four other teams won the four years before that.

9) Of the last 14 teams to win the national title in college basketball, 11 of them were favored by 20+ points in their first round game. Last 15 national champs went 12-3 ATS in their first round games.

8) Atlantic 14 is looking like a one-bid league, so their conference tournament will be fun to follow; last time the #1-seed won the A-14 was way back in 2013. Top four teams in A-14 this season are pretty well-matched.

7) Portland (+18) 69, San Francisco 68— This game was late Tuesday and it might hurt the WCC”s chances of getting four teams in March Madness. Horrific loss for USF, losing to a 12-12 Pilots squad that is 3-6 in the WCC. Bubble teams can’t be losing to stiffs.

6) Big thing in handicapping college basketball, for me at least, has become identifying college players who would be playing in the NBA if they were there. Those players figure to dominate college games, right?
— Jabari Smith, Auburn
— Jaden Ivey, Purdue
— Chet Holmgren, Gonzaga

Those are three guys I would put in that class right now.

5) Was watching a replay of the 2000 World Series between the two New York teams, and one of the FOX analysts was former big league catcher Bob Brenly. These days, Brenly is the TV analyst for Arizona Diamondback games.

But in 2001, right after his World Series stint on TV, Brenly took over as the Diamondbacks’s manager— he won the World Series in his first year as a skipper. He went 303-262 in 3+ years managing in Arizona.

4) Brooklyn Nets lost their last nine games, going 1-8 ATS; they had players making a combined $129M this season sitting out their last game with injuries.

3) Rutgers 66, Ohio State 64— Rutgers outscored the Buckeyes 10-0 over final 3:12 of game. When you shoot 10-18 on arc and lose, that’s a bad loss- OSU was 13-39 inside the arc.

2) I’m thinking the increased reliance on the 3-point shot has made handicapping college basketball more difficult- there are way more long rebounds in games with missed 3’s- teams get streaky, both good and bad.

Arizona was 16-1 at one point, then they went 10-51 on the arc over a 2-game stretch, losing at UCLA and struggling to beat rival Arizona State. Wildcats have good size, they run like hell, but knocking down 3’s is what makes them an excellent team.

In three games since that first ASU game, Arizona has recovered to go 19-51 on arc.

1) Notre Dame 63, Louisville 57— Louisville has lost nine of its last ten games, has already fired their coach- they’re 11-13, 5-9 in the ACC. Once late March/April rolls around, who they hire as their new coach will be a very interesting topic.
