Sunday’s 6-pack

Six best teams in defensive efficiency:
1) Texas Tech
2) San Diego State
3) Tennessee
4) VCU
5) LSU
6) Oklahoma State
List I posted Thursday was last year’s leaders; my mistake.

Quote of the Day
“Defensively, I thought that’s as good as we’ve played in awhile, especially in the first half. Obviously, I’ve got tremendous respect for Coach (Andy) Enfield and their program. Their projected seed is ridiculously low. That’s typical West Coast bias. I wish them all the best next week and hopefully we can all do what we did last year.”
UCLA coach Mick Cronin, after Friday’s win over USC

Sunday’s quiz
How many major league teams have spring training in Florida, how many train in Arizona?

Saturday’s quiz
Jim Harrick was UCLA’s basketball coach in 1995, last time they won the NCAA Tournament.

Friday’s quiz
Since 1999, Jason Campbell started the most games (52) for the Washington Redskins/Commanders; Robert Griffin III (35) started second-most.

********************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a full sports Saturday……..

Lot of stuff going on this week; chances are, this will wind up rambling a bit, going back/forth between sports. Conference tournaments, NFL trades and baseball ramping up. Lot to think/talk about.

— Remember, only one of the last seven national champs won their conference tournament, so while this week is fun, next week is the serious business, unless you’re Tennessee and you beat Kentucky. Beating Kentucky is always a big deal.

Tennessee 69, Kentucky 62— Vols haven’t won SEC hoop tournament since 1979; Tennessee has won 11 of its last 12 games. Kentucky went 2-20 on the arc, which is how upsets happen.

Not all coaches love the conference tournaments, especially the ones that end on Sunday. If you draw a Thursday game in first round of the NCAA’s, it cramps your prep time.

— Dallas Cowboys traded WR Amari Cooper to Cleveland for a 6th-round pick.

— Texas Rangers acquired C Mitch Garver from Minnesota, in exchange for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and a pitching prospect.

Iowa 80, Indiana 77— Hawkeyes trailed 67-58 with 5:16 left in game; they made 14-32 on arc, scored 1.19 ppp. In three games this week, they’ve scored 112-84-80 points. Keegan Murray had 32 points, making 8-10 on the arc.

— Toronto Blue Jays gave lefty P Yusei Kikuchi $36M for three years. Unvaccinated players will not be able to play in games in Toronto this season, by the way.

Yale 67, Penn 61— Penn has ball down 3 in last minute; their best player is Jordan Dingle, who had 28 points, but the Penn coach turns into Gene Hackman from Hoosiers and uses Dingle as a decoy— he finds a wide-open teammate for the game-tying shot, but the guy misses badly. Next time they have ball, same thing, and Cornell loses.

Here’s a hint: let your best player take big shots, especially in smaller leagues where the talent gap between stars/support players is greater.

— USC football coach Lincoln Riley bought a $17M house in Los Angeles that apparently has seven fireplaces. Why does a house in LA need a fireplace, much less seven of them?

— Baseball player on the Cal Bears hit a home run the other day, but was ruled out after he failed to touch home plate. Whoops. How do you miss home plate? Seriously?

— Surprising fact: Indiana hasn’t been in NCAA Tournament since 2016.

— LSU fired basketball coach Will Wade; assistant Kevin Nickelberry will coach the Tigers in the NCAA Tournament. LSU was nailed with five Level 1 violations by the NCAA; Wade went 108-54 at LSU, 56-33 in SEC games, but they’re headed for probation, which figures to hinder their search for a new coach.

— Houston Texans’ QB Deshaun Watson got off the hook from criminal allegations against him; the civil lawsuits filed against him still hold, but trade discussions have apparently begun, and Carolina is listed as a team that is interested.

— Starting in 2023, the baseball schedule will have fewer divisional games; every team will play every other team at least one series a year.

Saint Peter’s 60, Monmouth 54:
a) Peacocks make NCAA’s for first time in 11 years.
b) Saint Peter’s is good defensive team, but they’re 0-5 vs top 100 teams.
c) Monmouth is off to the CAA now, a big jump in leagues.

— I knew this was coming, but it still sucks; A’s are dismantling their team, and started by dealing P Chris Bassitt to the Mets for two prospects. Awesome.

At least one of the teams I root for tries to win; Rams had an awesome year, but the A’s are headed to the scrap heap in a big way. Why would people in Las Vegas want the A’s to move there? They don’t try to win!!!

— Chicago Bears traded LB Khalil Mack to the Chargers, for 2nd/6th round draft picks. When you hire a new coach, a new GM, players who are over 30 are likely to hit the road, which is what happened here.

— 2B Josh Harrison gets $5.5M from the White Sox (one year).
— SS Jose Iglesias signed with the Colorado Rockies.

Kansas 74, Texas Tech 65— Two very good teams we could see in Final Four.

Villanova 54, Creighton 46— Teams combined to shoot 11-61 on the arc.

Arizona 84, UCLA 76— Wildcats outscored UCLA 49-36 in second half- they blocked 11 shots.

Virginia Tech 82, Duke 67— Hokies made 10-22 on arc, scored 1.24 ppp- they won the ACC tournament for the first time, as the #7-seed.

Boise State 53, San Diego State 52— Aztecs have been in Mountain West final the last five years, but went 2-3 in those five finals. Aztecs shot 31.1% inside arc.

Akron 75, Kent State 55— Kent State had won 14 in a row coming in, but had four players suspended here, three for the first half, one for whole game, for off-court reasons- they posted some offensive video on social media Friday night. Not good.

Monday’s 6-pack

NCAA tourney teams with best 2-point shooting %age:
— Gonzaga
— Vermont
— Arizona
— Alabama
— South Dakota State
— Colorado State

Quote of the Day
“My wife put me in the transfer portal.”
TV analyst/former coach Pete Gillen

Monday’s quiz
When was last time a #15-seed beat a #2-seed in NCAA Tournament?

Sunday’s quiz
15 major league teams have spring training in Florida, 15 train in Arizona.

Saturday’s quiz
Jim Harrick was UCLA’s basketball coach in 1995, last time they won the NCAA Tournament.

********************************

Monday’s Den: Some quick thoughts after first glance at the brackets

This is going to be fairly short; it is time to get to work on the four play-in games, and 28 first-round games where we know the matchups.

— Last time the #1 team in top 25 on Selection Sunday won the national title title was Kentucky in 2012. Gonzaga is the #1 team right now.

— When Richmond upset Davidson Sunday to win the A-14 tournament, they bounced Dayton out of the tournament.

— High drama for the San Francisco Dons; their matchup with Murray State was second-last one revealed on CBS; they had to be thinking they were on the outside looking in, before CBS showed that matchup. Just getting in is a big deal; USF was last in the NCAA’s in 1998.

— Murray State-Kentucky second round game would get Racer fans fired up, getting to play their in-state big brother. I’m thinking Murray-USF is my favorite first round game.

— I thought Gonzaga got a tougher draw than Duke; Memphis in the second round? Gonzaga has to hope Penny Hardaway’s Tigers look past Boise State and get beat by the Broncos.

Georgia State won its last ten games; I’d rather play Cal-Fullerton than the Panthers. Sun Belt is a better league than the Big West.

Duke plays a Fullerton team that won Big West final by a point- Titans shot 11-20 on arc and won by a point? Fullerton is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 7-10-13 points. Whoever survives the Davidson-Michigan State game won’t be as tough an opponent as Memphis-Boise winner.

— Big 14 got nine of its 14 teams in tournament; they got nine teams in last year, too, going a combined 8-9. Michigan was only team to survive the first weekend last year.

— Tennessee just won the SEC tournament for first time since 1979, winning on Sunday; they got a Thursday/Saturday draw, which is tough, but they’re playing Longwood in first round, a Lancers’ squad making its first NCAA appearance.

— Shaka Smart got to the Final Four back in 2011; he lost his second round game in both 2012 and 2013, but since then, he is 0-5 in NCAA Tournament games. Marquette-North Carolina is an excellent 8-9 first round game. Winner will be a tough second-round game for #1-seed Baylor.

— Purdue is 3-7 this season when they score less than 70 points, 24-0 when they score 70+; Yale won’t run with Boilers, but they’re also 0-5 vs top 100 teams this season, with four losses by 14+ points (closest of those losses was 61-53 at Vermont). Ivy League teams are 9-2 ATS in last eleven first round games.

— Vermont won its three America East tourney games by 39-32-39 points, but America East is a cruddy league. Vermont is 22-1 since December 10; Catamounts lost by 11 at Maryland, by 10 at Providence, their highest-profile games this season. Vermont-Arkansas is an intriguing 4-13 tilt.

— Wisconsin gets to play the first weekend in Milwaukee; their second round game is the winner of Iowa State-LSU. Cyclones lost their last three games, are 8-12 in 2022. LSU just fired their coach for being a shameless cheater. Seems like an easy first weekend for Wisconsin.

Back to Iowa State; they lost their last three games, scoring 48.3 ppg, they look like a dead team, but were carried into the tournament by their 12-0 pre-conference mark, which included wins over Iowa, Creighton, Memphis.

— Wright State plays Bryant of the NEC in a play-in game; last two years, Wright State is 4-0 vs Robert Morris, winning by 9-30-10-2 points. Robert Morris jumped from the NEC to the Horizon League two years ago, so Wright State appears to be a superior team there.

Bryant lost to these higher-profile teams:
— 83-64 at Rhode Island
— 93-70 at Clemson
— 111-44 at Houston
— 73-58 at Cincinnati

Bryant’s only wins over team in top 200 were two wins over Wagner, whose best player was hurt and didn’t play.

— South Dakota State is 30-4; they haven’t lost since December 15. Jackrabbits are making 44.2% of their 3’s, best in country. Intriguing matchup with Providence- opponents shot 31.2% on arc against the Friars this season (#57 in country).

Jackrabbits are 2-2 vs top 100 teams; they beat Bradley/Washington State, lost to Alabama by 16, by 12 at Missouri State.

— I’ll obviously be back every day with more tidbits; sometimes you can learn stuff when you look at the times when these games will be played. If the powers-that-be sense an upset, that game ain’t going to be played at 3 in the afternoon, I’m just saying.

Time to get to work.

Tuesday’s 6-pack

NCAA tourney teams who get highest %age of points on 3’s:
38.9%— Colgate
38.4%— Villanova
38.2%— Virginia Tech
37.8%— Notre Dame
37.6%— Jacksonville State
36.8%— San Francisco

Quote of the Day
“Why would you want to dance with someone who doesn’t want to dance with you?”
Adam Sandler, The Wedding Singer

Tuesday’s quiz
76ers’ C Joel Embiid played one year of college hoop; where did he play?

Monday’s quiz
#15-seed Oral Roberts upset #2-seed Ohio State in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Sunday’s quiz
15 major league teams have spring training in Florida, 15 train in Arizona.

***************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) #4-seed Providence is a 2-point favorite over #13-seed South Dakota State in a first round game Thursday; that’s the lowest spread ever in a 4-13 first round game.

Next lowest spreads in a 4-13 game:

2003, Dayton was -2.5 over Tulsa; Tulsa won 84-71.
2010, Vanderbilt was -3 over Murray State; Racers won 66-65.

12) Delaware is coached by Martin Inglesby; his Blue Hens play Villanova in first round.

— Inglesby’s father/uncle both played basketball at Villanova.
— Inglesby’s father had his number retired by Villanova.
— Inglesby’s sister is married to Baker Dunleavy, who played/coached at Villanova.

Delaware center Dylan Painter played for Villanova three years ago, then transferred to the CAA school. Villanova beat the Blue Hens 78-70 in a neutral court game two years ago.

11) Jerry Palm was saying on CBS Sports Network Sunday night that Rutgers has the worst net rating of any at-large team to make the NCAA Tournament since at least 1994. Big 14 moving to a 20-game conference schedule is helping more of their teams get into the NCAA’s.

Rutgers played the 4th-easiest non-conference schedule in the country this season.

10) Florida basketball coach Mike White bolted the Gators for conference rival Georgia, an odd move if ever there was one.

White replaced Hall of Famer Billy Donovan at Florida; he was there for seven years, getting past the first weekend once in his four NCAA tournaments with the Gators.

9) NFL schedule makers had to re-boot the 2022 schedule process when Tom Brady announced he will back with the Buccaneers next season.

8) Random NBA stat: Washington Wizards are 1-9 ATS on first end of a back/back.

7) Oh yeah, they finally started spring training, all while the winter meetings are kind of going on at the same time.

My A’s fandom got a little more depressing when Oakland dealt 1B Matt Olson to Atlanta for four prospects, including OF Christian Pache, who is a great fielder but has a career batting average of .119 in 67 at-bats.

C Shea Langeliers hit 22 homers in the AA Southern League last year.

If you own a pro sports franchise, you should try to win, or sell the team to someone who will try to win. You can win and make a lot of money too.

6) Cincinnati Reds are in the same boat as the A’s; they’re letting Nick Castellanos walk, they dealt Sonny Gray and now they’ve traded Jesse Winker (and Eugenio Suarez) to Seattle for prospects. Reds went 83-79 last year, figure to be lot worse this year.

5) DH Nelson Cruz signed a one-year, $13M deal with the Washington Nationals.

4) Minnesota traded 36-year old 3B Josh Donaldson to Bronx, along with Isiah Kiner-Falefa and a catching prospect, for C Gary Sanchez and IF Gio Urshela, which means New York is moving Gleyber Torres back to 2B.

New York will be Donaldson’s fifth team in five years; he is owed $43.5M the next two years.

3) Underrated baseball record; Shawn Green once had 19 total bases in one game- he hit four home runs, a double and a single for the Dodgers against Milwaukee in a 2002 game.

2) Former big league OF Yasiel Puig is playing pro ball in Korea these days, as he tries to revive his career and get back to the majors down the road.

1) College basketball coaching moves:
— South Carolina fired Frank Martin, who was in Final Four five years ago.
— Missouri fired Cuonzo Martin, who was 35-53 in SEC games with the Tigers.
— LSU fired Will Wade, who has the NCAA knocking on LSU’s door.
— Western Michigan, Citadel, East Carolina, South Dakota, Kansas State are all looking for new coaches.

Wednesday’s 6-pack

NCAA tourney teams who force highest %age of turnovers:
25.3%— LSU
24.6%— Iowa State
23.6%— Texas Tech
23.3%— Texas
22.9%— Baylor, Tennessee
22.7%— Georgia State

Quote of the Day
“……when I look at my time here with the Rams, it’s no different … I feel great about my time here and what I’ve done. But I’m somebody, if you know me well enough, I’m always chasing something. I just felt like right now, I felt like I’m at a time in my life where maybe chasing the best dad I can be, the best husband, best friend are things to me that are important to me.”
Super Bowl champ Andrew Whitworth, who retired as a player this week

Wednesday’s quiz
Pete Maravich holds the single-game scoring record for a D-I player, set against Alabama in 1970. How many points did he score in that game?

Tuesday’s quiz
76ers’ C Joel Embiid played one year of college hoop, at Kansas.

Monday’s quiz
#15-seed Oral Roberts upset #2-seed Ohio State in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

*******************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

13) Texas Southern 76, A&M-Corpus Christi 67:
— Texas Southern was 26-35 on foul line, Corpus Christi 9-19.
— Texas Southern is #3 in country in experience; their subs play the most minutes.
— Tigers move on to play #1-seed Kansas Thursday.

12) Indiana 66, Wyoming 58:
— Hoosiers were too tall for the gritty, gutty Cowboys.
— One kid on Wyoming had 10 turnovers by himself; he was awful.
— Hoosiers move on to play 5-seed Saint Mary’s Thursday.

11) As far as the play-in games go, do the 16-seeds benefit from playing in them? When else will Texas A&M-Corpus Christi get on national TV? Has to help their recruiting, right?

The 16-seeds that don’t play in the play-in games (this year Norfolk State/Georgia State) are going to lose in anonymity and then they go home, unless they can pull a UMBC and shock a top-seed. Getting exposure on TV can help your recruiting.

10) Monday, Oakland traded 1B Matt Olson to the Braves; Tuesday, Olson got an 8-year contract worth $168M from Atlanta. All of which reminds me of a story.

June 15, 1976, I’m finishing my junior year in high school, a nerdy 16-year old. Was playing basketball up the street, then went home, where my dad was sitting in a lawn chair under the big tree on our front lawn. He had a weird look on his face.

Me: What’s up?
Dad: Your A’s just traded their three best players (Joe Rudi/Rollie Fingers to Boston, Vida Blue to Bronx, all for cash)

I’m carrying my brand-new Walt Frazier-brand Puma sneakers; I’m not happy. I think about what he said, got a little upset and one by one, threw my new sneakers over our house into the backyard, kind of close to the woods behind our house.

Not my finest moment.

Back then, June 15 was the trade deadline. Now, 46 years later, I’m a little cooler when the same stuff still happens. No more throwing stuff, I’m just disgusted that these rich people would own teams, and don’t try to win. Whats the point?

9) Which brings to my next point; I now have more interest in my fantasy league and on picking winners in baseball than I do in rooting for the A’s, because it is damn well obvious that the A’s are going to suck for the next couple years, at least.

P.S. on the June 15, 1976 trades: the commissioner voided the trades, the three players went back to Oakland after a week in limbo, and the A’s just missed making the playoffs that year. Then those players left after the season anyway, and the A’s were dreadful the next three years.

8) San Diego Padres’ star Fernando Tatis broke his wrist, is out at least three months; word is he broke his wrist in a motorcycle accident. Oy.

7) NFL quarterback news:
— New Jersey Giants gave Tyrod Taylor two years, $11M, with up to another $6M in incentives. Taylor has a 26-26-1 mark as an NFL starter. Giants will be Taylor’s sixth NFL team.
— Mitchell Trubisky signed with the Steelers for two years, $17M, with up to another $10M in incentives. Trubisky has a 29-23 record as an NFL starter.

6) They announced the other day that Carolina Panthers were interested in Deshaun Watson being their new QB; now Carolina’s division rivals Saints/Falcons are also said to be interested.

My question is this: Do teams sometimes pretend to have interest in a player, to drive the price up for those who really do have an interest?

5) Vanderbilt 82, Belmont 71— These schools are less than five miles apart, but they don’t play each other; this was an NIT game. Why would these schools not play each other?

In an era where everyone wants to make $$$, you would think that this is an annual money maker for sure, unless Vanderbilt doesn’t want to visit Belmont’s gym now and then. Maybe that’s the hangup. Belmont might not want this to be a road game every year.

4) 1B Anthony Rizzo gets two years, $32M to stay in the Bronx, as Freddie Freeman turned the New Yorkers down. Still several good ballplayers who are free agents.

3) Weird college football game this fall; October 8 in Las Vegas of all places, Notre Dame will play BYU at Allegiant Stadium. Why there?

2) Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns scored 60 points Monday night, as the T-Wolves beat the Spurs in San Antonio. Towns was 7-11 on the arc, 12-20 inside arc, 15-16 on the foul line- he had 17 rebounds. Tremendous performance.

Best part of it was after the game, how happy his teammates were for him. So much in the NBA you hear guys whining about this or that; was fun to see guys enjoying the moment.

1) Some conference trends for the first round of the NCAA’s:
— Last six years, underdogs are 14-10 ATS in 6-11 games.
— Since 2009, MEAC teams are 2-7 ATS in this round.
— Last six years, Big South teams are 1-5 ATS in this round.
