Thursday’s 6-pack

Odds to win the PLAYERS Championship this week:
10-1— Jon Rahm
16-1— Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas
20-1— McIlroy, Hovland, Cantlay
25-1— Scottie Scheffler, Hideki Matsuyama
30-1— Schauffle, DJohnson, Berger
35-1— Cam Smith, Matt Fitzpatrick

Quote of the Day
“It was fun, and I’m glad we took advantage of it….… I think we fed off the energy. I was actually surprised, his form, he actually had some good rotation on the ball, and endless energy. I don’t know how.”
Steph Curry, talking about Will Ferrell warming up with the Warriors Tuesday

Thursday’s quiz
When Russell Wilson transferred from NC State to Wisconsin, what future NFL QB took his place at NC State?
(Hint: He is still active in the NFL)

Wednesday’s quiz
Russell Wilson played football for NC State, Wisconsin.

Tuesday’s quiz
Murray Slaughter was the New York City cop with the big nose who was Felix/Oscar’s friend in The Odd Couple.

************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) ACC tournament:
— Virginia Tech 76, Clemson 75, OT— Kid on Tech stuck a 3-pointer at buzzer to win the game.
— Boston College 82, Wake Forest 77, OT— Deacons will have a very long four days, waiting to hear their name on Selection Sunday. Wake led by 10 with 6:05 left.
— Syracuse 96, Florida State 57— Buddy Boeheim sucker-punched a Florida State player, is suspended for Thursday’s game against Duke.

Clemson is only team from original ACC that has never won the ACC tournament; only two times have they won two games in an ACC tournament.

12) Over the last ten years, seven different schools have won the ACC tournament.

11) Big East tournament:
Butler 89, Xavier 82, OT:
— Xavier led 66-60 with 0:52 left in regulation.
— Musketeers lost six of last seven games; they’re likely headed to NIT.

10) Big 14 tournament:
— Northwestern 71, Nebraska 69— Cornhuskers led by 15 early in second half.

9) Indianapolis Colts traded QB Carson Wentz to Washington Wednesday; they got couple of 2nd-round picks and a 3rd-round pick. One of the 2nd rounders becomes a 3rd rounder if Wentz plays less than 70% of Washington’s snaps next year. Washington also gets a 2nd round pick from the Colts.

8) Over the last four seasons, Colts have had four different starting QB’s:
2018— Andrew Luck
2019— Jacoby Brissett
2020— Philip Rivers
2021— Carson Wentz
2022— ?????

7) MAAC tournament:
— Rider 71, Iona 70— Rick Pitino’s Gaels won the MAAC by three games, but they’re headed to the NIT after this loss.
— Rider outscored Iona 6-0 over final 2:37.

6) Pac-12 tournament:
— Stanford 71, Arizona State 70— Sun Devils led 69-55 with 3:01 left in game. ASU made 15-28 on arc, only 3-7 on foul line.
— Oregon 86, Oregon State 72— Beavers were in the Elite 8 last year; they finish 3-28 this year.

5) Maryland fired basketball coach Mark Turgeon in December; there were rumors that the Terps were going after USC coach Andy Enfield, who got his Masters from Maryland after going to college at Johns Hopkins, where is was the best free throw shooter in college history.

This week, USC gave Enfield a raise/contract extension, so he ain’t going to Maryland.

4) NBA season is 82 games long; coaches find unique ways to keep things fresh.

Golden State Warriors had lost 8 of 10 games, so who shows up on the court during pre-game for the Warriors-Clippers game Tuesday?

Actor Will Ferrell, dressed in his basketball uniform from the 2008 hoops film “Semi-Pro.” Yes, Jackie Moon was on the court, shooting with Klay Thompson, who apparently loves that movie.

Golden State won 112-97. Players credited Ferrell for giving the team good energy.

3) We mentioned yesterday how Will Clark hit six homers off of Nolan Ryan, more than anyone else. Reader Glenn points out that Ryan gave up two home runs to pitchers; Burt Hooton and Larry Dierker. Hall of Fame 3B Mike Schmidt hit five homers off of Ryan.

2) Last year, there were 56 baseball players who got shipped to the minors 6+ times, as teams used the rules to keep their rosters fresh. Lot of frequent flyer miles, but apparently this is one of the things the players’ union isn’t happy about.

Reliever throws 3+ innings, he is done for few days, so off to AAA he goes and a fresh arm takes his place.

Lot of smaller things like this are why this labor agreement has taken so long to finish; would’ve been nice if they started negotiating last fall, like a smart business would have.

1) Major league baseball owners cancelled another week of games; I have no desire to debate which side is right or wrong- they’re both wrong.

Tuesday afternoon, I’m sitting at a bar with three TVs on:
— ESPN was talking about the NBA; that’s all ESPN ever talks about.
— ESPN2 was talking about the Rodgers/Wilson NFL moves.
— MLB Network was airing a special on Billy Martin, who died 33 years ago.

It is fitting; baseball is clueless how to market their great sport. Wealthy imbeciles.

5) Tennessee
6) USC

Quote of the Day
“A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something.”
Frank Capra

*****************************

Friday’s Den: Wrapping up a very busy day……..

Thursday of Champ Week is always one of my favorite days of the year; this year especially, the first normal March Madness since 2019. Throw in the labor impasse ending in baseball, and this was an excellent day.

13) Big X
— Oklahoma 72, Baylor 67— Since 1985, no team has won the national title after losing their first conference tournament game.
— TCU 65, Texas 60— Texas led this game by 20 just before halftime. Longhorns are 3-5 in their last eight games.
— Bruce Weber is out as Kansas State’s coach; they say he “retired” but they’re paying his salary for next year, so they fired him.

12) SEC
— Texas A&M 83, Florida 80— Underdogs covered the first seven games played Thursday.
— LSU 76, Missouri 68— Tigers led this game 34-9, but they’re erratic.
— Vanderbilt 82, Alabama 76— 48% of Alabama’s shots are 3’s, but they’re shooting only 30.8% on the arc (#307)

— Georgia fired coach Tom Crean, who made the Final Four with Dwyane Wade, Marquette back in 2003.
— Vanderbilt assistant coach Ed Conroy is the nephew of author Pat Conroy, who wrote one of my favorite movies, Prince of Tides.

11) Pac-12
— Arizona 84, Stanford 80— Wildcats’ PG Kriisa sprained his ankle (check status). Stanford lost despite making 11-20 on the arc.
— Colorado 80, Oregon 69— Ducks lost seven of their last nine games.

10) Big 14
— Michigan State 76, Maryland 72— Spartans led by 20 with 13:04 left; Tom Izzo wasn’t happy after game with how MSU damn near blew this game.
— Iowa 112, Northwestern 76— Not a gutty effort by the Wildcats.
— Indiana 74, Michigan 69— Wolverines are 17-14, 4-5 in last nine games. A bubble team.

9) Mountain West
— Wyoming 59, UNLV 56— Cowboys ended an 0-19 skid against the Rebels in Las Vegas.
— Boise State 71, Nevada 69— Boise starts four seniors; they’re a quiet 25-7 team.
— Colorado State 53, Utah State 51— Teams combined to shoot 4-33 on the arc.
— Four Mountain West games Thursday were decided by total of 14 points.

8) ACC
— Duke 88, Syracuse 79— Three SU kids played whole 40:00; they were up 7 in second half, played their hearts out, but still gave up 1.28 ppp. Was this Jim Boeheim’s last game as a coach?
— Miami 71, Boston College 69, OT— Hurricanes shot 64.9% inside arc.
— Virginia Tech 87, Notre Dame 80— Hokies won 11 of their last 13 games.

7) Big East
— Villanova 66, St John’s 65— Red Storm led by 17 early in second half.
— Providence 65, Butler 61— Four of last five Friar wins were by 4 points or in OT.
— Creighton 74, Marquette 63— Bluejays won eight of their last ten games.

6) Mid-American:
— Toledo 72, Central Michigan 71— #1-seed Rockets were favored by 17; they were losing with 0:20 left.
— Akron 70, Buffalo 68— Zips outscored Buffalo 6-1 over final 1:26.

5) AAC
— Tulsa 73, Wichita State 67— Shockers went 6-10 in last 16 games, after a 9-3 start.
— UCF 60, South Florida 58— Knights won despite shooting 30.8% on arc.

4) A-14:
— Fordham 54, George Mason 49— Rams are 16-15; they’ve had one winning season since 2008.
— UMass 99, George Washington 88— UMass made 12-29 on arc, scored 1.27 ppp.

3) Big West
— Long Beach State 72, Bakersfield 61— Beach won 15 of its last 17 games.
— UCSB 78, Cal-Irvine 69— Gauchos won nine of last ten games.
— Hawai’i 68, Cal-Riverside 67— Rainbows won six of last eight games.

2) Conference USA
— Louisiana Tech 59, Western Kentucky 57— Tech survived 20 turnovers (minus-9)
— Middle Tennessee 66, UTEP 59, OT— Blue Raiders outscored UTEP 17-7 on line.

1) Big Sky:
— Montana State 83, Sacramento State 61— Bobcats won 16 of their last 18 games.
— Northern Colorado 68, Eastern Washington 67— Bears led by 17 in 2nd half, hung on for win.

Friday’s games start in eight hours; I better sleep fast

Terrible beat here, just awful; UAB (-7) led this game by 11 with 0:15 left in third OT; UAB players start jawing and two of them (two!!) get technical fouls.. Thought Andy Kennedy was going to lose his mind. Middle Tennessee hit the free throws, covered thru back door.
