CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Josh Hart scored a career-high 30 points with six 3-pointers and No. 3 Villanova powered past Wake Forest 96-77 on Friday to reach the finals of the Charleston Classic.

Hart, a preseason All-American, made five of his team's first six baskets to open a 16-8 lead and the Wildcats (4-0) kept going. They'll face UCF or College of Charleston for the tournament title on Sunday night.

Villanova used a combination of accurate shooting and solid defense to slow down Wake Forest (3-1), which had scored 103 points Thursday in defeating UTEP. While the Demon Deacons shot 50 percent, they rarely got their transition game in motion against the Wildcats.

It was not all good for Hart, who was whistled for a technical foul late in the second half with his team ahead double digits when he got tied up and jawed with Wake Forest's Bryant Crawford down low.

Hart surpassed his previous top total of 27 points against Akron last season.

No. 7 KANSAS 86, SIENA 65

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Frank Mason III scored 18 points to lead a late-game charge, Carlton Bragg added a career-high 15 points and 11 rebounds and Kansas beat pesky Siena.

Devonte Graham added 13 points and nine assists, and Lagerald Vick scored 12 points off the bench, as the Jayhawks (2-1) extended their winning streak to 42 straight at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Saints (1-2) never made it easy.

Marquis Wright hit three straight 3-pointers midway through the second half, and the gritty senior guard's three-point play got coach Jimmy Patsos' team within 63-58 with about 7 1/2 minutes left.

Vick answered with back-to-back baskets for the Jayhawks, kicking off the game-defining 16-2 run that would put the game away. Mason added a 3-pointer and a couple foul shots, Graham got into the act, and the Jayhawks - so accustomed to dominating inside - leaned on their guard play to seal the win.

No. 10 ARIZONA 95, SACRED HEART 65

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Lauri Markkanen scored 22 points to lead six Arizona players in double figures and the Wildcats routed overmatched Sacred Heart.

Fellow freshman Rawle Alkins added 18 points for the Wildcats (3-0). They led by as many as 25 points in the first half and 39 in the second.

Arizona's Dusan Ristic had 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Quincy McKnight had 22 points and Joseph Lopez 15 for the Pioneers (1-2).

The game was part of the Las Vegas Invitational, as is Monday night's game against Northern Colorado. The Wildcats move on to Las Vegas to play Santa Clara next Thursday.

No. 11 XAVIER 83, CLEMSON 77

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - J.P. Macura scored a career-high 28 points and Trevon Bluiett contributed 21 as Xavier defeated Clemson in the second round of the Tire Pros Invitational.

Macura hit six 3-pointers and Bluiett sealed the win with two free throws in the final moments.

The Musketeers (3-0) held a comfortable lead for most of the second half before Clemson (3-1) surged within 63-62. Xavier, led by Malcolm Bernard, answered with six straight points to regain control.

Donte Grantham led five Clemson players in double figures with 21 points.

No. 13 MICHIGAN STATE 100, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 53

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Miles Bridges scored 21 of his 24 points in the first half, grabbed 11 rebounds and had six assists in his home debut for Michigan State in a win over Mississippi Valley State.

The Spartans (1-2) got a confidence-boosting win after getting routed by No. 2 Kentucky and losing to No. 10 Arizona by two points.

Ronald Strother had 12 points and Amos Given scored 10 for the Delta Devils (0-4).

Bridges, a 6-foot-7 freshman, put on quite a show that the fans loved at the Breslin Center, including former Michigan State great and Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. Johnson came out of his seat and spread his arms wide and had an ear-to-ear smile when the left-handed Bridges followed up a miss free throw by driving through the lane and leaping to make a backboard-shaking, right-handed dunk.

No. 14 GONZAGA 109, BRYANT 70

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Przemek Karnowski scored 22 points and Johnathan Williams added 20 to help Gonzaga beat Bryant.

Zach Collins added 18 points for Gonzaga (3-0), which is seeking a 19th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Nisre Zouzoua scored 22 points and Adam Grant had 17 for undersized Bryant (1-2), which lost to Gonzaga the only previous time the teams met, in 2013.

Both teams are known as the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga was coming off a 69-48 win over San Diego State on Monday that was the Aztecs' largest margin of defeat in nine seasons, a span of 260 games.

The Zags built an early lead and slowly extended it for most of the game. Bryant was undone by 23 turnovers.

No. 18 SYRACUSE 71, MONMOUTH 50

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Andrew White scored 18 points, Taurean Thompson added 12 and Syracuse routed overmatched Monmouth.

The Orange (3-0) led 37-29 at the half. The Hawks (1-2) shot 21 percent from the field were 1 of 18 from 3-point range in the second half. For the game, the Hawks shot 31 percent and were 4 of 29 from on 3-pointers.

Syracuse outscored Monmouth 34-21 in the second half.

Tyus Battle added nine points, and Frank Howard had eight points and six assists for Syracuse. Tyler Lydon had four blocks.

Justin Robinson led the Hawks with 11 points, and Collin Stewart had eight.

No. 15 PURDUE 64, GEORGIA STATE 56

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Caleb Swanigan scored 18 points and Purdue scored the final 20 points of the game to rally and beat Georgia State in the Cancun Challenge opener.

Trailing 56-44 with 7:08 to play, the Boilermakers (2-1) took over. Dakota Mathias hit two 3-pointers and P.J. Thompson one during the game-closing run.

Center Isaas Haas added 11 points for Purdue, and Jeremy Hollowell had 15 to lead Georgia State (1-2), which also got 13 points from D'Marcus Simonds.

Georgia State led 56-44 on a Malik Benlevi basket with 7:08 remaining, but Purdue pulled even at 56 on two Haas free throws with 3:57 remaining.

No. 22 CREIGHTON 103, WASHINGTON STATE 77

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) - Cole Huff scored 19 points, and Creighton put Washington State away early en route to a victory in the opening round of the Paradise Jam tournament.

Marcus Foster added 16 points and Justin Patton 10 for the Bluejays (3-0), who went up by double digits less than seven minutes into the first half, and led 60-36 at the break.

Conor Clifford scored 29 points, Ike Iroegbu and Charles Callison had 11 each, and Josh Hawkinson added 10 for the Cougars (2-1), who trailed by as many as 34 points in the second half.

Creighton took its biggest lead midway through the second half, going up 80-46 on Tyler Clement's layup with 13:30 remaining.

The Cougars would then break the 100-point mark for the first time this season with 1:50 left on Ronnie Harrell Jr.'s jumper.

Saturday’s games

St Mary’s didn’t leave California LY until Feb 4; they travel to Dayton here to upgrade their non-league schedule, for NCAA purposes. Gaels scored 95.5 pts/game in winning first two games- they beat Nevada by 19; St Mary’s hit 42.9% of 3’s so far. Dayton won by 5 at Alabama four days ago but lost F Cunningham (leg) on last play of game. Flyers scored 86.5 pts/game in their first two wins, shooting 44% from arc. WCC teams are 11-9 vs spread this month, 4-2 as road underdogs. A-14 teams are 4-10 this month as home favorites.

Toledo split its first two games, losing 77-76 at St Joe’s, then beating Youngstown 103-98 in OT, so its been busy week for Rockets, who are playing #35 tempo while starting four seniors. Wright State fired its coach LY after a 22-13 season and 21+ wins in three of last four years- they won first two games this year, 85-81/89-87, making 43.8% of its 3’s. Raiders played only 7 guys more than 8:00 last game; they start 3 juniors, 2 seniors. MAC teams are 10-8 vs spread this season. Horizon teams are 8-6. MAC teams are 16-12 vs spread in last 28 games vs Horizon clubs.

Nebraska beat couple stiffs by 22-32 points to open season; Cornhuskers made 54.5% of itheir 3’s, #3 in country- they lost 3 starters from LY’s 16-18 team. Louisiana Tech lost by 9 at South Carolina, then hammered a stiff last game; Bulldogs are forcing turnovers on 26.7% of time; but are shooting just 30.4% on arc, 66% on foul line. Tech won at Ohio St. LY, won’t be intimidated by Big 14 atmosphere. C-USA road underdogs are 7-1 vs spread this month; Big 14 home favorites are 5-6 against spread.

UNLV split its first two home games, losing to South Alabama, beating Riverside by 12; Rebels are basically an expansion team, with new coach, only 3 returning players. UNLV is shooting 21.6% on arc (#326), but they got two players back from injury last game who missed USA game. Fullerton lost by 16 at Washington Thursday, after beating Portland State in double OT at home, when they were down 8 with 1:18 left in regulation. Mountain West teams are 7-5 in last 12 games vs Big West opponents; MW favorites are 2-5-1 vs spread in those games.

Cal-Irvine won by 3 at Pacific LY, rallying back from down 14 in second half; Anteaters lost in OT at California Wednesday, after leading by 13 early in 2nd half. Cal was playing without three starters. Irvine played 10 guys at Cal; 6 frosh, 2 sophs, 2 seniors. Pacific upset Green Bay at home late Monday night in ESPN marathon game. Tigers also lost 119-80 at UCLA- they start 4 seniors and a junior. WCC teams are 16-10 in last 26 games vs Big West teams, just 4-5 vs spread when an underdog vs Big West squad.

Northern Illinois is 3-0 with an OT win over Indiana St.; this is their first road game. Huskies beat Northridge by 12 at home LY- NIU was 11-24 on arc, CSUN was 15-31 on foul line in game where both sides took 30+ FTs. NIU has made only 25% of 3’s this year, but allow just 60.7 pts/game. Northridge lost at UCLA by 15, Stanford by 27, allowing 99 pts/game; Matadors are turning ball over 22.2% of time, but Pac-12 teams are too good for them. MAC teams are 9-5 vs spread this season. Big West teams are just 4-16 vs spread, 3-7 at home.

Cincinnati won its first two games by 29-23 points; they take big step up in class here against a Rhode Island team expected to break thru this year and make NCAAs for first time since 1999. Bearcats play slowish tempo; they’ve made only 25.6% of its 3’s in two home games, but did force lot of turnovers. URI won its first three games by 23-42-7 points; they’re also stepping way up in class; Rams have made 40.4% of its 3’s thru three games. A-14 teams are 6-5 in last 11 games vs AAC teams. AAC teams are 7-8 vs spread this year. A-14 teams are 8-15 vs spread.

Green Bay played awful in 76-58 loss at Pacific late Monday nite; Phoenix has 3 starters back from LY’s 23-13 team, but they were 5-22 on arc at Pacific, which is tough when you’re trying to play fast. Murray State beat Illinois State 73-70 at home, then lost 87-81 at Middle Tennessee, two solid games- they start only one senior. Racers split pair with Horizon teams LY, beating Milwaukee, losing to Wright St. Horizon teams are 8-6 vs spread this month, OVC teams are 10-10. Green Bay starts 3 seniors; curious how they bounce back here.

Morehead State is 2-1, losing first road game 85-77 at Marshall Wednesday; Eagles were outscored 30-3 on foul line- yikes. Morehead is athletic, in top 60 in forcing turnovers and offensive rebounds- they start 3 seniors. Evansville split pair of one-sided games; they’re starting 3 seniors- they were 3-0 vs OVC teams LY, winning by 4-5-15 points. Morehead lost by 1 at Illinois State in its only MVC game LY. OVC teams are 10-10 vs spread this year. MVC teams are 6-6. MVC teams are 8-4 in last 12 games against OVC, only 4-8 against spread.

South Florida is worst team in AAC; they split first two home games, losing by 13 to Elon, beating Florida A&M by 11. Bulls turned ball over 24.1% of time in those games; they have no seniors in their rotation. Rider already has two road wins, albeit at Hartford/Hampton; Broncs allowed just 62 pts/game, forcing turnovers 23.1% of time. Rider is starting 4 seniors and a 5-10 freshman PG- they started LY 1-8, so this is improvement. MAAC teams are 4-8 vs spread this season, 4-5 as road underdogs. AAC teams are 7-8 vs spread, 3-3 as home favorites.

Western Kentucky lost to Belmont last two years by 1-5 points; they were outscored 21-13 on foul line here LY in 90-85 loss. Hilltoppers beat couple stiffs by 13-7 points to start season, albeit 74-67 win in last game was vs Jacksonville State and coach Harper, who WKU fired LY. WKU is starting 4 seniors and a junior. Belmont lost was 9-41 on arc in 80-66 loss at Vanderbilt Tuesday; they were down 15 at half, got close midway thru 2nd half before Vandy pulled away. Belmont won’t be 9-41 at home- they start only two seniors.

Tennessee State was 20-11 LY after being 10-51 the two years prior; they’re 3-0 this year, with two neutral court wins and a 69-61 win at Santa Clara. Tigers are forcing turnovers 21.3% of time- they’re starting 3 seniors, 2 juniors. Middle Tennessee beat Murray State of OVC 87-81 in 71-possession (normal speed) game Tuesday; Blue Raiders are #22 in experience and they upset Michigan State in NCAAs LY, so it is positive experience. C-USA teams are 13-5 vs spread this season, 4-3 as home favorites. OVC road underdogs are 7-6 vs spread.

Wyoming won 73-72 at Montana in its first D-I game of year; Cowboys took more 3’s (9-28) than 2’s (12-25) in game, which isn’t necessarily good- they were down 9 with 9:59 left to play. South Dakota State lost by 29-15 in games at California/UC-Irvine to start season; Jackrabbits have a new coach for first time in 22 years- they’re shooting just 21.7% on arc, had ton of their shots blocked on road trip- they’re starting a freshman PG. Mountain West teams are 2-5 vs spread as home favorites this year; Summit League road underdogs are 8-5 against the spread.

Saturday’s six-pack

— USC 65, Texas A&M 63— Solid road win for the Trojans.

— Arkansas 71, Tex-Arlington 67— Mavericks were up 17 in first half.

— Virginia’s basketball team dumped transfer Austin Nichols; he played one game for them after transferring from Memphis.

— Texas Rangers signed P Andrew Cashner for one year, $10M.

— Xavier-Northern Iowa is the final of the Tire Pros tournament in Orlando which will be Sunday night.

— Villanova-Central Florida is the final of the Charleston tournament, which will also be Sunday night.

Saturday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Winning helps and losing doesn’t: Jerry Jones said this week that the Cowboys have already sold 1.5M+ jerseys this year, ten times more than they had $old at thi$ time laSt year. Do the math on that one.

12) Last week, Pitt, USC and Iowa all won as underdogs of 22-9-24 points; out in Las Vegas, a guy put $2 on a money-line parlay of those three teams and collected $792 for this troubles. Thats a 396-1 shot.

11) Justin Verlander was left off of two Cy Young ballots, both by writers in Tampa Bay area; his girlfriend is actress Kate Upton, who let her feelings be known on Twitter (she wasn’t happy).

Verlander was 16-9, 3.04 LY and pitched well (2 runs in 7 IP) in his one start against the Rays LY. No idea why those two writers left him off their ballot- it makes no sense.

10) There are 351 Division I college basketball teams, only so many players to go around, so teams get creative in recruiting: Eastern Washington has five players from Australia; Davidson has players from seven different countries.

9) Rams’ punter Johnny Hekker is first NFL punter since 1984 (Luke Prestridge) to have punts of 75+ yards in consecutive games.

8) Maryland’s football team was outscored 121-6 in its last two games.

7) Clemson got a technical foul during its game with Davidson on Thursday; one of their players wears #00, but it was put in the scorebook as #0, which isn’t the same.

6) Central Michigan has a QB named Cooper Rush who is being touted as an NFL prospect, in a year where the NFL Draft might be a little light on QB prospects.

5) Ravens’ kicker Justin Tucker is also an opera singer and a pretty good one. He sang at a Christmas concert in Baltimore last December and got a standing ovation.

4) Last year, Georgetown played at Maryland and the Terps shot 20 more FTs than the Hoyas. This year, the Terps won by a point at Georgetown, but the Hoyas took 20 more FT’s than Maryland. Funny how that works.

3) Georgetown also lost Thursday as a 23-point home favorite to Arkansas State; Hoyas dropped in rankings from #30 to #46. ASU jumped from #274 to #235.

2) Was reading thru UTEP’s basketball preview for this year; coach Tim Floyd says that El Paso is the biggest city in America without a major league sports team.

1) Our thoughts/prayers go out to Chiefs’ long-snapper James Winchester; his dad was the airport employee murdered earlier this week in Oklahoma City. RIP, sir.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL PICKS - DUQUESNE AT KENTUCKY

18th Nov 2016 | By: Tom Wilkinson

The Kentucky Wildcats are big favorites on Sunday night as they host the Duquesne Dukes in a game that can be seen on ESPN U. The Wildcats are currently ranked 2nd in the country but they will move up to #1 next week when the new rankings are released as Kentucky is coming off a dominating win over Michigan State while top-ranked Duke lost to Kansas. The Dukes started the season going 2-1 while the Wildcats are 3-0. Let’s look at the matchup and college basketball picks.

Duquesne visits Kentucky on Sunday, November 20th with a start time of 9 pm Eastern on ESPN U.

Duquesne vs. Kentucky

The Dukes started the season 2-1 with wins over Loyola-Maryland and Saint Francis and a loss to Penn State. The Dukes got career highs from both Rene Castro and Tarin Smith in their win over Saint Francis. Castro and Smith combined for 49 points in the 89-75 win. While Duquesne scored a lot of points they still didn’t play that well as they turned the ball over 17 times. Turnovers will spell disaster against a team like Kentucky.
Duquesne has played well at times this season but they have yet to play a full 40 minutes of good basketball. This game on Sunday will be their first test against an elite team. Duquesne is scoring 76 points per game and giving up 72 per contest.

The Wildcats are 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS this season as they have wins over Stephen F. Austin, Canisius and Michigan State. The Wildcats are loaded with young talent led by freshman Malik Monk who had 23 points in the win over Michigan State. Head coach John Calipari realizes that Monk and De’Aaron Fox have a ton of talent but getting them to focus can be a problem. "Getting him and De'Aaron (Fox) to not be casual," Calipari said.

The Wildcats dominated Michigan State as their defense completely shut down the Spartans. It was so impressive that Kentucky’s offense didn’t need to do much. The Wildcats shot just 38 percent and won by 21 points. Many people believe this Kentucky team is one of the best Calipari has ever had. The three guards, Isaiah Briscoe, Fox and Monk are averaging a combined 51 points and 10 assists per game.

Game Notes

The Wildcats will pressure Duquesne on Sunday night as Kentucky ranks eighth nationally in turnovers forced and the Wildcats have averaged 28.3 points per game off turnovers. The only weakness for Kentucky looks to be rebounding as they have been outrebounded 116-107 through three games. Kentucky also needs Bam Adebayo to stay out of foul trouble as he has committed 10 fouls in the first three games and averaged just 22.7 minutes per contest.

College Basketball Picks

This is a bad spot for Duquesne as they had to play on Friday night while Kentucky is rested and ready. Kentucky should be able to control this game from start to finish so I will lay the points and take the Wildcats.

OLE MISS VS ORAL ROBERTS ODDS PICK & PREDICTIONS
18th Nov 2016 | By: Admir Aljic

Place: UVI Sports and Fitness Center, St. Thomas
Date/Time: Friday November 18th, 2016. 3:00 PM ET
TV Coverage: CBS Sports Network
Odds: Ole Miss -8.5 Total: 160
Ole Miss Rebels are set to play the Oral Robert Golden Eagles in the first round of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam tournament on Friday Nov.18th 2016, with the tip-off scheduled for 3:00 PM ET.

The Golden Eagles hope to get the .500 mark

The Paradise Jam will be a great chance for the Golden Eagles to get some things right early in the season. The exotic island setting should provide a relaxing atmosphere which could be of a great use for the team in their quest to improve their last season 14-17 record. However, the Golden Eagles have not shined in their first two games, losing to Baylor 61-76 and defeating the Division II Rogers State University at home with 87-76. Although they are not expected to be much of a force, they hope to be a tough competitor against Ole Miss and hopefully reach the 2nd round of the tournament, where they could go against the winner of the Loyola vs St. Josephs contest. Oral Roberts Golden Eagles have averaged 74 points per contest, shooting 43.9% from the field and a decent 36% from the 3-point line. At the same time their opponents score 76 points with a 43.4% shooting from the field. Senior guard Jalen Bradley leads the team in scoring with 15.0 ppg, while adding 4.5 apg and 2.5 rpg. Albert Owens is scoring 14.5 ppg on average, along with 5.5 rpg and 1.5 apg, while Emmanuel Nzekwesi chips in an average of 12.0 ppg and 9.5 boards in 31.5 minutes of play.

Rebels are off to a good start with 2-0

The Ole Miss Rebels have indeed recorded 2 wins in their first two games, but both of them came after a slim performance against the mediocre UT Martin Skyhawks with 86-83 and the UMass Minutemen with 90-88 at home. The Rebels will certainly look to avoid the close game scenario from their first two games, entering the matchup against the Golden Eagles on Friday. Although the team has not been playing up to the expectations, they are certainly going to continue to improve as the season goes on, and the Paradise Jam tournament is the perfect place for it. Offensively, the Rebels have been very solid, averaging 88.0 points per contest, while allowing their opponents to score 85.5 points, making it a scoring margin of +2.5 points. The team shoots 44.2% from the field with 35.3% from the 3-points line. The Rebels have 5 players averaging double digits in scoring, with the transfer from Miami, DeAndre Burnett leading the pack with 17.5 ppg, 2.0 rpg and 2.0 apg. Terrence Davis is averaging 16.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 2.0 apg. Additionally, New Mexico transfer Cullen Neal (15.5 ppg, 6.0 apg), Sebastian Saiz (13.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg) and Rasheed Brook (11.5 ppg) have all been key factors in the Rebels two wins.

Ole Miss Rebels vs Oral Roberts Golden Eagles Prediction

The first two games from Ole Miss Rebels have showed that they allow their opponents to stay in the game and be competitive all the way, which is something the Golden Eagles hope to do on Friday. However, the Rebels have a much more talented team and if they manage to take a better control of the ball, reduce the turnovers (21 per game), their victory should not come in question. My bet is that the Rebels will open the Paradise Jam tournament with a comfortable win over the Golden Eagles with the points going UNDER the total (160).

MONMOUTH AT SYRACUSE COLLEGE BASKETBALL PICK, ODDS & PREDICTION
18th Nov 2016 | By: Adam Burke

Matchup: Monmouth Hawks at Syracuse Orange
Date/Time: November 18, 7:00 p.m. ET
TV: ACC Network
College Basketball Betting Odds From Bookmaker
Spread: Syracuse -12
Total: 141.5

The Monmouth Hawks had one of the top mid-major resumes in college basketball last season, but the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference was just a one-bid league and the Hawks had to settle for the NIT. Suffice it to say that few mid-majors are as motivated for this season as Monmouth, who won a school record 28 games last year. With one failed test in the loss column, the Hawks head to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York to take on the 18th-ranked Orange. Syracuse is a double-digit favorite for this matchup, with a total in the low 140s.

The Hawks are 1-1 straight up and against the spread this season, but they lost against the spread in the game that they won and covered the game that they lost. Monmouth was a 13-point winner over Drexel in the season opener as a 19.5-point favorite. They lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the South Carolina Gamecocks earlier this week, but covered the five-point spread in the 70-69 loss. Syracuse is 2-0 in a couple of unlined contests after clubbing Colgate 83-55 and Holy Cross 90-46. These two teams did not meet last season, but Monmouth topped UCLA on the road and Notre Dame and USC at neutral sites.

Monmouth was a #1 seed in the NIT, which would imply that they just missed the cut for the field of 68, but their stay in that event was short-lived. They lost in the second round to the eventual champion, George Washington. It does feel like the Selection Committee made the right call leaving Monmouth home and taking Syracuse to the Big Dance. The Orange made it to the Final Four. Hawks coach King Rice was happy with the team’s effort in the overtime loss to South Carolina, as his team erased a 40-22 deficit to eventually force the game into extra time. This is a major step up in class and it doesn’t come at a good time for Monmouth.

The hallmark of the Syracuse program is its outstanding zone defense. Monmouth is shooting just 36 percent from the floor and 27 percent from distance on the season. A cold shooting night can make for a very bad night against Syracuse. Fortunately, just about everybody of consequence is back for the Hawks, so maybe they can get things turned around. Last season’s leading scorer and MAAC Player of the Year Justin Robinson is shooting less than 28 percent from the floor, but he was nearly a 40 percent three-point shooter last season and shot over 43 percent overall. Chris Brady leads the team with 31 points through two games in increased minutes. He has earned some more playing time and he’s taken advantage of the opportunity. Micah Seaborn and Je’lon Hornbeak played a big role last season. The one certainty about this game is that this experienced team that won some big road and neutral-site games last season will not be scared of the moment.

Syracuse took a self-imposed postseason ban two years ago in what was a down year for the Orange anyway. It paid off handsomely with last season’s trip to the Final Four. The Orange knocked off Dayton, Middle Tennessee State, Gonzaga, and Virginia before falling victim to fellow ACC member North Carolina. It was a Syracuse team that narrowly made the field after going just 19-13 (9-9) and after losing five of its last six games. Timing is everything, isn’t it? Syracuse’s reputation as a premier program certainly didn’t hurt, nor did its strength of schedule.

Only four Orange players averaged double figures last season and three of them are gone. Leading scorer Michael Gbinije is a bench player for the Detroit Pistons. Malachi Richardson is also coming off the bench for the Sacramento Kings. Trevor Cooney exhausted his eligibility. Sophomore Tyler Lydon was, arguably, Syracuse’s best three-point shooter and he’s the top returning scorer. Seniors Andrew White Jr. and Tyler Roberson have been the primary scorers so far this year, but it’s hard to tell who will emerge because Syracuse has played two cupcakes. Fifth-year senior John Gillon seems to be comfortable in his role as floor general, as he already has 15 assists in two games.

College Basketball Free Pick: Syracuse Orange -12

Unless Monmouth flips the switch and starts making shots, it could be a very long night in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse is stepping up in class here as well, so this will be a good test for them, but this is a very experienced team with five senior leaders and a collection of sophomores that saw minutes last season in the rough-and-tumble ACC. Monmouth does bring basically the same team to the table as last year’s upset-minded Hawks, but the problem here is that many of Monmouth’s upsets came against up-tempo teams. The slowed-down structure of Syracuse’s game is going to be a big negative here.

PENN STATE VS. DUKE ODDS PICK & PREDICTION
17th Nov 2016 | By: Tom Wilkinson

The Duke Blue Devils are big favorites on Saturday as they take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in a game that will be played at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The matchup is part of the Hall of Fame Basketball Tip Off tournament with the other game having Cincinnati taking on Rhode Island. Let’s look at this matchup on Saturday between Penn State and Duke and college basketball picks.

The Nittany Lions visit the Blue Devils on Saturday, November 19th with a start time of 12:30 pm Eastern in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Penn State vs. Duke

The Nittany Lions have already played three games in the past week and won two of three as they lost to Albany while beating Duquesne and Grand Canyon. "I wanted to play these three games to prepare us for this weekend," head coach Pat Chambers said. "Knowing that we're going to have a lot of freshmen on the floor, I felt it was important for us to get the uniform on, be in the arena, get the families here and get the jitters out, all that stuff. And then really get a good look and gauge where are we exactly?"
Penn State will get a good idea of where they are at as they face one of the best teams in the country in Duke. Penn State beat Grand Canyon 85-76 while Duke beat them by 35 points. "We're going to practice on Thursday and do the same things we've been doing," junior Shep Garner said. "It's just another game for us. We just want to be ready for the moment. That's it."

The top-ranked Blue Devils fell to Kansas on Tuesday but they showed a lot of heart as they came back from double-digits down and nearly won. Injuries have really hurt Duke early in the season but they hung right with Kansas.

"I think we’re a good team — otherwise we’d get blown out of here tonight,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "But we’re a limited team right now. We’re not who we imagined ourselves to be. But that’s not an excuse. That’s just the way it is. We’ll see what happens when we get guys back. I think these experiences are good.” Duke is still without Jayson Tatum, Marques Bolden and Harry Giles.

Game Notes

Penn State is scoring 83 points per game while allowing 79 points per game. The Nittany Lions failed to cover their only lined game as they beat Duquesne by 8 points as a 10-point favorite. Duke is scoring 88 points per game while allowing 62 points per contest. They have gone under in both of their games where totals have been posted.

College Basketball Picks

There is little doubt that Duke is going to win this game so the question is whether or not they will cover the big number. The key will be Duke having a great first half because the bench for Duke right now is simply not very deep. I think the Blue Devils will bounce back with a big effort so I will lay the points and hope to avoid a backdoor cover by Penn State.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Freshman Frank Jackson scored 17 points and top-ranked Duke beat Penn State 78-68 on Saturday in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament.

Amile Jefferson added 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Blue Devils (3-1), and Matt Jones and Luke Kennard each had 15 points.

Duke lost forward Chase Jeter to injury early in the game. The 6-foot-10 sophomore rolled his left ankle in the first half and did not return.

Tony Carr had 20 points, and Shep Garner added 15 to lead Penn State (2-2).

Duke will play Rhode Island in the title game Sunday.

NO. 21 RHODE ISLAND 76, NO. 24 CINCINNATI 71

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) - E.C. Matthews hit two late 3-pointers and finished with 18 points in Rhode Island's comeback victory over Cincinnati in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.

Kuren Iverson added 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Jared Terrell and Hassan Martin each scored 14 points for the Rams (4-0).

Jacob Evans scored 25 points and Kyle Washington had 23 for Cincinnati (2-1).

NO. 6 INDIANA 87, LIBERTY 48

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - James Blackmon Jr. made five 3-pointers and had 20 points for Indiana.

Indiana (3-0) scored the first nine points and built a 32-point lead in the first half. Robert Johnson added 13 points and OG Anunoby had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Liberty (1-2) was 1 of 17 from 3-point range in the first half and 5 of 27 overall.

NO. 17 ST. MARY'S 61, DAYTON 57

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Jock Landale scored 15 points off moves to the basket and Calvin Hermanson had 16 points from the perimeter, forming an inside-outside attack for St. Mary's.

The Gaels (3-0) led the whole way, pulling ahead by 20 points midway through the second half and holding off a late Dayton rally.

The Flyers (2-1) took advantage of the Gaels' sloppiness and went on a 14-1 run, cutting it to 59-57 on Charles Cooke's jumper with 25 seconds left. Emmett Naar hit two free throws with 7.2 seconds left to clinch it, leaving the Flyers 1-2 against Top 25 teams over the last two seasons. Cooke led the Flyers with 19 points.
