Preview: Aztecs (2-1) at Golden Bears (2-0)
Date: November 21, 2016 11:00 PM EDT

The lineups that 25th-ranked California and San Diego State will field when they meet at Sacramento's new Golden 1 Center on Monday (11 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Networks) might bear little resemblance to the players they put on the floor in their last games on Wednesday.

The Bears (2-0) were missing three starters -- preseason All-American forward Ivan Rabb (toe) guards Jabari Bird (back) and Grant Mullins (neck) -- in their 75-65 overtime victory against UC Irvine.

The Aztecs (2-1) faced a worse situation. They started Wednesday's home game against San Diego Christian with only eight players and at one point were down to six, including one walk-on, by the time they finished off an 81-58 victory.

"They are probably looking for the same thing we are -- to get healthy," Cal coach Cuanzo Martin said, "But that's a great program."

There is a pretty good chance that many of the injured players will be available on Monday.

All three injured Cal players may be ready to return Monday, and if Rabb plays, it would represent his season debut after he sustained a sprained toe in a scrimmage against St. Mary's three weeks ago.

For San Diego State, Valentine Izundu (ankle) and Matt Shrigley (ankle) could have played Wednesday if the opponent had not been an overmatched NAIA school.

Montaque Gill-Caesar (nose) and Dakarai Allen (ankle) were injured during Wednesday's game, but might return for Monday's game, too.

The outlook for Malik Pope (knee), Max Hoetzel (knee) and Ben Perez (back) is less certain. All three missed the first three games of the season and remain questionable for the game against Cal.

The 6-foot-10 Pope is the key member of that group after starting 16 games last season.

"Malik's making progress," Aztecs coach Steve Fisher said after Wednesday's game, "but I would term myself 'cautiously optimistic' today that he would have a chance (to play Monday)."

It would have been nice to have those injured players last Monday at Gonzaga, which clobbered San Diego State 69-48 when the Aztecs shot only 28.6 percent from the field.

They were not needed against San Diego Christian, although Fisher nearly ran out of players.

"We had two 13-year-olds as honorary coaches today," Fisher said after the game, "and at halftime I said, 'John, Jake, do you have tennis shoes?' They looked at me. I said, 'Where do you go to school?' La Jolla Country Day. 'What grade are you in?' Seventh grade. I said: 'I'm putting one of you in. I mean that, I'm putting one of you in.'"

After consulting a rule book, Fisher did not put them in. Jeremy Hemsley had a game-high 23 points for the Aztecs in that game and preseason all-conference selection Trey Kell added 19.

The Bears had a much bigger challenge against UC Irvine, which held a 13-point lead early in the second half.

Cal rallied behind freshman Charlie Moore, a 5-foot-11 point guard from Chicago who scored 38 points, a Cal freshman record and the most points by a Bears player since Jerome Randle, another undersized point guard from Chicago, scored 39 in 2010.

"We didn't want to have any excuses after the game," Martin said. "You had key guys out, and this is part of the game. You have 13 scholarship guys. You have to make it work with the guys who've been in practice. Probably one of the better wins in my coaching career, just to see guys compete and battle and not make excuses."

San Diego State, the preseason pick to win the Mountain West Conference title again, won the conference regular-season title by three games last season, but failed to get into the NCAA tournament. A neutral-court win over Cal might help the Aztecs make the Big Dance this season.

Preview: Hoyas (1-2) at Ducks (2-1)
Date: November 21, 2016 4:30 PM EDT

MAUI, Hawaii -- Oregon and Georgetown keep facing off in far-away places.

The fourth-ranked Ducks will meet the Hoyas in the first round of the Maui Invitational on Monday. Three years ago, Oregon opened the season with an 82-75 win over Georgetown in South Korea.

"We were able to play Georgetown three years ago and we had a tough game with them," Ducks coach Dana Altman said. "We know they are an awfully good team with a lot of players coming back and we have a good core group coming back."

Oregon is one of three ranked teams in the field along with No. 5 North Carolina and No. 9 Wisconsin. The Ducks and Badgers would face off in the semifinals if both advance out of the first round while the Tar Heels could await Oregon or Wisconsin in the title game.

"You look at the field and the exciting thing about it is a lot of teams have a lot of experience," Altman said. "There are good programs and good coaches. North Carolina is coming off being in the national championship and Wisconsin was in the Sweet 16 and we had a nice year. It should be a competitive field."

Oregon has its highest ranking in school history after reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last season, but the Ducks will likely fall when the new polls come out Monday following a 66-49 loss at Baylor on Tuesday.

"Sometimes it is harder to maintain a certain level of success than achieve it, so we definitely have some obstacles to overcome to get guys in the right frame of mind to compete," Altman said. "This tournament will do that because game in and game out there will be great competition."

The Ducks hope to have all-conference junior forward Dillon Brooks back to face the Hoyas after he missed the first three games of the season following foot surgery. The 6-foot-7 Brooks, who averaged 16.7 points and 5.4 rebounds last year, has been going through workouts with the team and could be medically cleared in time for the trip to Maui.

"He's a big part of our team, but who knows when he's going to be back," Altman said. "I don't. The doctors haven't told me. I know he's anxious to get back but until they release him we have to play without him."

It is unlikely Brooks will start when he first returns because he will be on a limited schedule.

"We will play him on the exact schedule the doctor gives us," Altman said. "We are not going to be conservative or push the envelope, we will do exactly what the doctors say."

Oregon opened the season with a 91-77 win over Army before losing at Baylor. The Ducks bounced back with a 76-54 win over Valparaiso on Thursday.

With Brooks on the bench, center Chris Boucher leads Oregon in scoring at 17 points per game, followed by guard Tyler Dorsey at 12.7. Junior forward Jordan Bell is averaging 12.3 points and a team-high 8.7 rebounds.

Georgetown is 1-2 after back-to-back losses against Maryland and Arkansas State. Guards L.J. Peak and Rodney Pryor each lead the team with 17.7 points per game while center Jessie Govan is averaging 14.3.

Preview: Volunteers (1-1) at Badgers (2-1)
Date: November 21, 2016 2:30 PM EDT

The trip to Hawaii was booked before the coaches were hired, but Wisconsin's Greg Gard and Tennessee's Rick Barnes will accept the challenge that comes with playing in the Maui Invitational.

Ninth-ranked Wisconsin (2-1) will meet Tennessee (1-1) in the opening game of the eight-team tournament on Monday afternoon.

The Badgers will likely fall in the rankings after a 79-67 loss to Creighton last week, but they bounced back to defeat Chicago State 69-51 before heading to the islands.

Vito Brown scored 12 points in the uneven showing. Brown and Ethan Happ were a combined 9-of-13 from the field while Nigel Hayes, Bronson Koenig and Zak Showalter shot 4-of-22.

"We will continue to work and the guys will get better," Gard said. "We got a little experience and now we have something to draw back on. We will practice in Maui and we are better based on our experiences this season. What we look for is taking a step forward each day."

After 14 seasons as an assistant at the school, Gard was named interim head coach last December when Bo Ryan retired in the middle of the season. The 45-year old led the Badgers to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament to earn the job on a full-time basis.

Wisconsin is one of three ranked teams in the tournament along with fourth-ranked Oregon and No. 5 North Carolina.

The Badgers are led by Koenig with 15.7 points per game Hayes averages 11.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Hayes is shooting 38.7 percent after shooting 36.8 percent last season while Koenig is clicking at 42.5 percent.

Tennessee was upset 82-69 in its opener against Chattanooga before bouncing back to defeat Appalachian State 103-94 to start off Barnes' second season at the school.

Robert Hubbs III scored 16 points and six players reached double figures as the Volunteers scored 21 straight points in the first half and avoided their first 0-2 start since 1965-66.

"I thought we were much more aggressive offensively taking the shots that we want to take," Barnes said. "I thought that part was good. We still made so many young mistakes that you can't make."

Tennessee has a tough path as one of five unranked teams in Maui. If it beats Wisconsin, it could face No. 4 Oregon in the second round to possibly meet No. 5 North Carolina in the title game.

"It's always good to get your feet wet going and playing against teams like that, they're all well coached and they're all talented, so we're looking forward to those games," Tennessee freshman guard Jordan Bone said.

Bone is one of five players scoring in double figured with a team-high 14 points per game. Freshman guard Lamonte Turner and Hubbs III are each averaging 13.5 points per game.

Freshman forward Grant Williams is at 10.5 points while sophomore forward Kyle Alexander is at 10.0.

"We have to get better on the defensive side. But I feel like we can score the ball really well," Bone said.

Preview: Bluejays (4-0) at Rebels (4-0)
Date: November 21, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

No. 22 Creighton came close to scoring more than 115 points for the first time in more than 30 years Sunday.

Curious observers will be interested to see if the Bluejays can crack the 115-point mark Monday night when they face Ole Miss on Monday night in the championship game of the Paradise Jam tournament at St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Creighton (4-0) set a tournament record for points when it advanced with a 112-94 victory over North Carolina State. It was the most points scored by the school since getting 115 against former Missouri Valley Conference rival Indiana State on Jan. 19, 1985.

The outburst was the fifth-highest total in school history and followed a 103-point showing in the opening round against Washington State. In those games, the Bluejays shot 58.3 percent (80 of 137) and made 52.5 percent (21 of 40) of their 3-pointers.

Cole Huff scored 20 points Sunday and has 39 points in the tournament, making him a candidate to be named MVP of the event. Huff was one of six Bluejays in double figures Sunday, including leading scorer Marcus Foster.

Creighton, with its high-scoring offense is on the verge of winning the school's fourth regular-season tournament title under coach Greg McDermott.

"Our pace in our transition game really impacts (the opponents') choices to go to the glass," McDermott said. "Because if they don't get it, we're going to get downhill in a hurry. That's a credit to our rebounders, our outlet guys. Our wings are doing a great job running the floor."

A win on Monday also would give Creighton its fifth 5-0 or better start under McDermott. It would also mark the second time a current Big East Conference school won the tournament.

Ole Miss (4-0) has not approached triple digits in the tournament, but its offense has been pretty good through four games. The Rebels advanced to the title game with an 81-68 win over Saint Joseph's on Sunday.

The Rebels reached at least 80 points for the fourth consecutive time, due in part to the best game of Sebastian Saiz's career. Saiz, a senior forward, helped the Rebels improve to 21-8 in regular-season tournaments under coach Andy Kennedy by getting 26 points and 12 rebounds.

Leading scorer Deandre Burnett scored 20 points after collecting 41 points with nine 3-pointers in the opening-round, 95-88 overtime win over Oral Roberts.

"We were giving up a lot of free opportunities in the last game " Saiz said. "We used the mentality of 'nothing free tonight.' I knew they were going to try to double-team me, but I was ready for it. I knew they weren't going to be able to stop me."

Before advancing to the title game Sunday, the Rebels needed to rally from a five-point deficit Saturday against the Golden Eagles. And even before reaching St. Thomas, Ole Miss rallied from nine-point deficits against Massachusetts and Tennessee-Martin in its first two games.

"It just shows how resilient this team is," Burnett said after the win over Oral Roberts. "It shows we can battle and be resilient down the stretch. We fix a couple of things, and we'll be pretty good."

If Ole Miss wins, it would be 5-0 for the first time since 2013-14.

Monday will be the second meeting between the schools. Ole Miss recorded a 75-68 victory in the semifinals of 2014 Emerald Coast Classic in Florida, the school's last win over a ranked team on a neutral court.

Preview: Bears (1-2) at Wildcats (3-0)
Date: November 21, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Arizona will bring guard Kadeem Allen along slowly as it begins a stretch of three games in five days.

Allen missed the second game of the season and played only four minutes Friday night in the third game against Sacred Heart because of a left knee sprain. He is the only available senior for the 10th-ranked Wildcats.

Arizona (3-0) will play host to Northern Colorado (1-2) on Monday night at McKale Center in Tucson as part of the non-bracketed part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. The Wildcats move on to play Santa Clara in Las Vegas on Thursday and either Vanderbilt or Butler on Friday.

Getting productive minutes out of Allen, a returning starter and the team's best perimeter defender, is critical during such a busy stretch for a team that has only seven other scholarship players, pending news on sophomore guard Allonzo Trier.

"Kadeem wasn't going to further injure himself," Wildcats coach Sean Miller said of Allen making a brief appearance against Sacred Heart. "That's why we were able to play him. You could make the argument that with what he's working through, getting him out there is actually a good thing. I think every couple of days, he'll feel better and better.

"Clearly, he wasn't himself. But by the time we get to Las Vegas, Kadeem might not be 100 percent, but he'll be further along than he is now and able to play heavy minutes."

Trier, the team's leading returning scorer, having averaged 14.8 points per game last season, has not played in five games, including two exhibitions. School officials have not commented on his absence or a timetable for a potential return amid rumors of eligibility issues.

In the meantime, it is full speed ahead for Arizona's trio of freshmen, including forward Lauri Markkanen. He is averaging 20.3 points per game, shooting 59.4 percent from the field (19 of 32), 45.5 percent from 3-point range (5 of 11) and 94.7 percent from the free-throw line (18 of 19).

If anything, Miller wants more of the offense to run through the 7-footer from Finland, who is versatile enough to play some small forward while still packing a punch in the post.

"Lauri on the offensive end is a real mismatch at times," Miller said.

Freshman guard Kobi Simmons is an athletic marvel with a 45-inch vertical leap. He is second on the team in scoring at 15 points per game, having gotten to the line 21 times.

And freshman wing Rawle Alkins is third in scoring at 12 points per game. He is strong and burly, also able to get into the lane and draw fouls.

Arizona, with Markkanen and 7-foot center Dusan Ristic as well as 6-11 Chance Comanche and 6-9 Keanu Pinder off the bench, will have a significant size advantage over Northern Colorado. Ristic used a similar edge vs. Sacred Heart to post 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Northern Colorado is coming off an 88-72 loss at Santa Clara on Saturday night. The Bears opened the season with an 89-52 loss at Butler before beating Colorado Christian.

Sophomore guard Jordan Davis had 24 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in the loss to Santa Clara. He is averaging 23.7 points this season. Guard Chaz Glotta is averaging 14 points per game.

The Bears led Santa Clara by four at halftime before giving up 50 second-half points.

"When teams make a run, instead of settling down and trying to orchestrate the offense, we tend to rush things," coach Jeff Linder said. "In turn, that drops your shooting percentage and increases your turnovers."

Preview: Blazers (2-1) at Jayhawks (2-1)
Date: November 21, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas is capable of draining long-range shots.

This much, Bill Self sees every day in practice. Actually, as far back as when the Kansas coach recruited players for a team ranked No. 7.

Through a 2-1 start, however, the Jayhawks are shooting only 23.1 percent from 3-point range and have been outscored from behind the arc, 93-36.

Their top backcourt bombers -- senior Frank Mason and juniors Devonte' Graham and Svi Mykhailiuk -- have combined to go 9 of 37 entering a game Monday against Alabama Birmingham (2-1) as part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at Sprint Center.

"I know we're better shooters than what we've shot," Self said. "Devonte', Frank and Svi, none of them have gotten on a roll yet. I know we can become a pretty good shooting team."

Against Siena on Nov. 18, an 86-65 win that counted as the Jayhawks' host game in the CBE tournament, Kansas was outscored 24-3 at one point from 3-point range as the Saints trimmed a second-half deficit to five.

"We've been shooting the ball well in practice, it just hasn't translated into games," said Mason, who led Kansas in scoring in each of its three games and averages 23 points despite making only two 3-pointers this season.

Fatigue remains a factor the Jayhawks must confront.

Another semifinal between Georgia (2-1) and George Washington (3-0) is scheduled Monday before the CBE championship round is played Tuesday.

The Jayhawks opened the season traveling to Honolulu and New York for a split with Indiana and Duke and now face three games in five days.

Throughout the opening stretch, and throughout the season actually, attention will be focused on Josh Jackson, a 6-foot-8 freshman guard who came to Kansas ranked as the nation's top recruit by some services.

Jackson has shown flashes, but also encountered foul problems in each game, averaging only 22 minutes while scoring at an 11.7-point clip.

On occasion, Jackson has been clearly agitated by some calls, drawing a technical foul in the win over Duke.

"He's an emotional youngster, but that's something he's got to do a better job with," Self said. "I do think that he's got to control his emotions a little bit.

"Getting frustrated like that, sometimes it's OK but it's not thinking next play. You've got to put that behind you. He'll get better at that."

UAB is coping with the loss of Nick Norton, a starting junior point guard, who was lost for the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee in the season opener.

In their first game without Norton, the Blazers had a 26-game homecourt winning streak snapped by Furman before rebounding to defeat Troy 74-51 on Nov. 17.

UAB was picked as the consensus favorite in Conference USA after claiming the title last season and moving on to the NCAA Tournament before settling for a school-record 26 wins.

William Lee, a 6-9 junior forward who is the reigning C-USA defensive player of the year, had seven rebounds and seven blocked shots in the win over Troy.

Junior forward Chris Cokley paces the Blazers, averaging a team-high 14.3 points and 6.0 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Deion Lavender flirted with a triple-double against Troy, posting nine points, nine rebounds and seven assists. With Norton out, Lavender shared duties at the point with senior Denzell Watts.

"We did a better job of balancing the minutes and not relying strictly on Deion," said Robert Ehsan, who was promoted to head coach at UAB this season after Jerod Haase left for Stanford.

"Denzell was fantastic. Deion played off the ball as well, which he is an asset at. This is the kind of expectation that the coaches have for Deion, to be this productive. He had a great game."

Preview: Wildcats (2-1) at Longhorns (3-0)
Date: November 21, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

It will be a classic confrontation between No. 23 Texas' youthful balance and Northwestern's experience when the two teams square off Monday in the semifinals of the 10th annual Legends Classic at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The contest follows the first semifinal game between Notre Dame and Colorado. The losers of Monday's games square off at 2:30 p.m. CST Tuesday while the winners meet at 5 p.m.

The Longhorns are off to a 3-0 start, most recently defeating Eastern Washington 89-52 on Thursday. Sophomore swingman Tevin Mack paced five Texas players in double figures with 19 points off the bench.

No Texas player saw more than 28 minutes of action during the contest (28 by freshman center Jarrett Allen and senior guard Kendal Yancy). Eight UT players saw at least 19 minutes of action.

"At this point last season we had played better competition than we've played this year so everything's relative," Texas coach Shaka Smart said after Thursday's win. "Now the question is: Can we go on the road? The competition level will go up in New York. We will see better athletes. We will see more size. We will see better teams. How do we respond to that?"

In his two games, Mack paces Texas with an average of 16.5 points per contest. He leads six different Texas players who are averaging double figures in scoring through their first three games. Five Longhorns are averaging at least 5.0 rebounds per game.

Texas has excellent on the defensive end as well, especially at running shooters off the 3-point line. Opponents are shooting just 33.5 percent from the field against the Longhorns. Texas has limited its first three opponents to 21.8 percent (17-of- 78) shooting from 3-point range and held Eastern Washington to 14.3 percent (3-21) from beyond the arc in Thursday's victory.

Through the Longhorns' first three contests, Yancy ranks second on the squad in scoring (13.7 ppg), leads the team in steals (5) and is tied for the team lead in minutes (29.3 mpg). He has converted 54.2 percent (13-24) from the floor and 84.6 percent (11-13) free throws this season.

"We're pretty confident right now and we are in a good place," Yancy said. "We just have to keep improving. We have a lot of young guys who are willing to give it their all, willing to improve and grow every day. Just the energy they bring is good for the team in general."

Northwestern (2-1) heads to the Big Apple off a buzzer-beating 70-68 loss at Butler on Wednesday.

"We went into that game expecting to win, so it hurt," Northwestern coach Chris Collins said. "In the past, maybe it was okay to go to Butler and play them to the last shot of the game. To us, that's not what we were looking for. I sensed an anger in the team last night, which I liked. They know it was a game we very well could have got. We just didn't close the deal."

Sophomore forward Vic Law led four Wildcats in double figures with 17 points, including hitting 5 of 6 3-point attempts. The contest featured 17 ties and 16 lead changes.

"I'm confident in how our team's going to be," Law said. "But I'm angry that we let it slip away. We have to win games like (the loss to Butler). It's as simple as that."

Law has enjoyed a solid return to the Northwestern attack after missing all of the 2015-16 campaign due to shoulder injury. He's the team's leading scorer at 20.3 points per game, has paced the Wildcats in scoring in all three games and tallied at least 17 points in each contest, including a career-high 26 vs. Eastern Washington on Nov. 14. Through three games he is shooting 64.5 percent from the field (20-of-31).

Northwestern returns 61.4 percent of its scoring and 71.4 percent of its rebounding from a year ago. The Wildcats welcome back three starters and 10 letter winners overall from a team that won 20 regular-season games for the first time in school history.

It's been 42 years since Texas and Northwestern have played on the basketball court, and the teams have split two previous meetings. The Wildcats won 73-71 on Dec. 21, 1965 in Memphis, Tenn., while the Longhorns won 63-59 on Dec. 23, 1974 in Austin.

The Wildcats and Longhorns already have one common opponent this season: Eastern Washington. Northwestern beat the Eagles 86-72 on Nov. 14 in Evanston while Texas rumbled past EWU 85-52 three nights later in Austin.

Preview: Tar Heels (4-0) at (0-0)
Date: November 21, 2016 11:30 PM EDT

After mostly cruising through four games, fifth-ranked North Carolina takes a different kind of challenge this week.

The Maui Invitational should test the Tar Heels' endurance.

North Carolina has won each game by double-digit margins, so the likelihood for heightened competition is appealing at this stage of the season.

"I think that is what the whole team wants," Tar Heels guard Joel Berry said. "We want a good challenge. We still have to go out there and play our hardest, so we can try and get better. I think going out to Maui and playing against some better competition will help us."

The tournament schedule calls for three games in three days at Lahaina Civic Center, with the Tar Heels beginning Monday night against tournament host Chaminade (2-0), a Division II program.

This is North Carolina's seventh appearance in the Maui Invitational, with the Tar Heels reaching the finals five times and winning the 1999, 2004 and 2008 events. The Tar Heels have a 15-3 record in the tournament.

Coach Roy Williams said the competition is important. He's also prone to point out the fringe benefits of the trip because he enjoys tropical weather.

"We go to Maui every four years for a reason -- the head coach likes it," Williams said.

Yet the Tar Heels are aware that the basketball value is of utmost importance.

"We have to go with the right mindset," senior forward Kennedy Meeks said. "I know it's a nice place to go."

North Carolina holds a 4-0 record for the first time since November 2012.

Freshman post player Tony Bradley has scored in double figures in all four North Carolina games. That's the most consecutive games in double figures at the beginning of a college career for a Tar Heel since Brandan Wright's 18-game stretch in 2006-07.

Williams, with a 787-209 coaching record, moved into ninth place in Division I men's coaching victories with Friday night's 83-68 win at Hawaii. He passed Lefty Driesell.

That game also resulted in the lowest point total of the season for the Tar Heels, who rang up more than 90 points in the first three games of the season -- something they hadn't done in 22 years.

This marks the third Maui Invitational appearance in a row in which the Tar Heels will match up with Chaminade, though the last time it came in a consolation round.

Chaminade, which was coming off a 12-15 record in 2015-16, hasn't played since winning Nov. 11 and 12 against Alaska Anchorage and Alaska, respectively, to open the new season.

"Our defense has been really, really good," sixth-year coach Eric Bovaird said on the school's web site. "It's something we've focused on. We're getting better. It's something we're going to focus on."

Guards Rohndell Goodwin and Kiran Shastri averaged 24 and 20.5 points in the opening two games for Chaminade. Sam Daly, who was among the best in the Pacific West Conference last season in assists and steals, is a senior guard in his second year with the Silverswords after transferring from Grand Canyon.

"Starting out 2-0 going into Maui feels really good," Bovaird said.

The North Carolina-Chaminade winner takes on the Connecticut-Oklahoma State winner in Tuesday night's semifinals, while the losers meet in the consolation bracket.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) Rodney Pryor had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Georgetown withstood a furious second-half rally to hold on for a 65-61 victory over No. 13 Oregon on Monday in the first round of the Maui Invitational.

Georgetown (1-2) led by 17 after a superb first half, capped by Pryor's running 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Ducks (2-2) swarmed their way back, using pressure defense to create turnovers and easy baskets in transition.

Unlike their loss to Maryland last week, the Hoyas weathered the Duck storm and will advance to the second round against No. 16 Wisconsin.

LJ Peak added 17 points and hit two free throws with 2.7 seconds left to seal Georgetown's victory.

Payton Pritchard led Oregon with 18 points. Dillon Brooks had eight points in his first game of the season, including a long 3-pointer with 3.8 seconds left to get the Ducks within 2.

No. 5 KANSAS 83, UAB 63

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Josh Jackson had 22 points, Frank Mason III and Devonte Graham were nearly as productive and Kansas rolled to a victory over Alabama-Birmingham in the CBE Classic semifinals.

Mason finished with 20 points and Graham had 16 for the Jayhawks (3-1), who advanced to play George for the title on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs beat George Washington 81-73 in the other semifinal.

Kansas raced to a big early lead, weathered several runs by UAB, then relied on their backcourt of Jackson, Mason and Graham to pull away from the Blazers down the stretch.

Dirk Williams led the Blazers (2-2) with 13 points. Tyler Madison had 12.

No. 8 ARIZONA 71, NORTHERN COLORADO 55

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Lauri Markkanen scored 17 points, Parker Jackson-Cartwright had 15 points and a career-high 11 assists and Arizona pulled away over the final 12+ minutes to beat Northern Colorado.

Kadeem Allen added 10 for the Wildcats (4-0).

Gerard Davis scored 20 for the Bears (1-3). Chaz Glotta, a transfer from Southern Illinois, made 5 of 11 3-pointers for 15 points.

Jackson-Cartwright, whose previous career best was five assists, committed just one turnover. He had none in the previous game against Sacred Heart.

The Wildcats outscored the Bears 34-16 over the final 12:15.

But most of the night, Northern Colorado - picked by coaches and the media to finish near the bottom of the Big Sky Conference - gave the Wildcats all they could handle.

No. 12 CREIGHTON 86, MISSISSIPPI 77

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) - Marcus Foster scored 25 points, and Creighton had to rally in the second half to beat Mississippi in the championship game of the Paradise Jam tournament.

Khyri Thomas added 16 points, Toby Hegner had 12 and Justin Patton 11 for the Bluejays (5-0), who trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and were down 50-40 with 18:44 left in the game.

But Creighton began its rally at that point, whittling down the Rebels' lead until tying the score twice, the last at 74-74 with 5:45 left. Thomas then put the Bluejays ahead to stay with his three-point play with 3:40 remaining.

That ignited a 12-3 Creighton run to close out the game, capped by a pair of free throws from Thomas with 40 seconds left.

Deandre Burnett and Rasheed Brooks scored 22 points each, and Cullen Neal added 10 for Mississippi (4-1).

No. 16 WISCONSIN 74, TENNESSEE 62

Bronson Koenig scored 21 points, Nigel Hayes had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Wisconsin opened the Maui Invitational with a win over Tennessee.

Wisconsin (3-1) built a big early lead and rallied after Tennessee made two runs to take the lead early in the second half. Hayes hit a couple of big 3-pointers and the Badgers pulled away late to earn a spot in the second round on Tuesday.

Wisconsin, in its third Maui Invitational, shot 56 percent and used its size advantage inside to pull down 11 more rebounds. Ethan Happ added 16 points for the Badgers.

Tennessee (1-2) trailed by 17 midway through the first half before finding its footing in Maui.

Shembari Phillips led Tennessee with 16 points, and Detrick Mostella and Robert Hubbs III had 12 each.

NORTHWESTERN 77, No. 22 TEXAS 58

NEW YORK (AP) - Bryant McIntosh had 20 points and five assists to lead Northwestern to a convincing victory over Texas in the semifinals of the Legends Classic at Barclays Center.

The Wildcats (3-1) will play Notre Dame, which beat Colorado 89-81, in the championship game Tuesday night.

Northwestern opened the game with an 11-0 run and closed the first on a 9-0 spurt to take a 34-26 lead.

The Wildcats opened the second half on a 10-1 run to go up by 17 points and the Longhorns (3-1) were never closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Scottie Lindsey had 16 points and Dererk Pardon had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Northwestern which took advantage of an out-of-synch Texas offense for the easy win.

Tavin Mack scored 18 points for the Longhorns, who finished with 14 turnovers and just seven assists. Texas didn't help itself at the free throw line going 13 for 27.

Tuesday, November 22

Towson State led by 13 at Maryland Sunday with 14:27 left, lost by 5; Tigers are 2-1 with all three games on road- they start three juniors, one senior. Towson is #64 in experience; they’re shooting just 29.1% on arc but force turnovers 20% of time. Boston College is 2-1 but hasn’t played anyone ranked above #215; they lost at home to #314 Nicholls State. Eagles start a freshman and two sophs. A CAA team favored on road over an ACC team? CAA teams are 12-14 vs spread.

Arkansas scored 84.3 pts/game in beating three decent teams to open season; they were down 17 in last game vs Tex-Arlington, won by 4. Razorbacks are #19 experience team; they outscored UTA 24-9 on line; Hogs made 44.4% on arc so far- this is their first road game. Minnesota scored 85.5 pts/game in winning four home games; young Gophers are playing #72 pace- they’ve got two top 100 wins, beating Tex-Arlington by 17, St John’s by 6.

Middle Tennessee State beat Toledo by 8 LY in finals of Alaskan Shootout; Blue Raiders split pair of D-I home games to start this season, lost to Tennessee State by 11 after beating Murray State by 6. MTSU is shooting just 57% on foul line so far. Toledo is 2-1 vs decent teams, with three games decided by total of 10 points- their loss was by point to St Joe’s. Toledo starts four seniors; they won at Wright State. C-USA teams are 17-13 vs spread. MAC teams are 16-15.

Oregon State misses graduated star Gary Payton Jr; they scored 59 pts/game in losing last couple games, to Lamar/Nevada. Beavers are turning ball over 27.4% of time, 7th-worst in country- they’ve got only one senior who plays and he’s a 7-footer. Tulsa lost 7 of top 8 scorers from LY’s team; Hurricane lost by 27 at Wichita, also lost at home to Jacksonville State- they’re turning ball over 22.6% of time. Tulsa starts a freshman and three juniors- they’re shooting 55.2% on line.

Wyoming is 3-0 with a 73-72 win at Montana (were down 9 with 9:27 left); Cowboys scored 75 pts/game in first two games vs D-I teams- they start two sophs, three juniors. Pacific lost couple road games (UCLA, Irvine) but upset Green Bay in its only home game; Tigers start four seniors, unusual for new coach- they have zero blocked shots in three games. Mountain West teams are 12-6 SU in last 18 games with WCC teams, 2-4 vs spread when an underdog.

Maui Classic
Tennessee is one of 20 least experienced teams in country; they’re playing pace #34. Vols played six guys 23:00+ yesterday, rallying back from down 17 to take lead before losing to Wisconsin by 12- they’re forcing turnovers 22% of time, but still give up 83.3 pts/game. Oregon was also down big yesterday, rallied but fell short vs Georgetown. Ducks got star Brooks back- he played 13:00. Six other Oregon kids played 26+ minutes. Pac-12 teams won seven of last eight games with SEC teams. Pac-12 teams are 16-17 against the spread.

Wisconsin has its whole team back from LY; they blew a 17-point lead yesterday, still won by 12 over a more athletic team- they used four kids 29:00+. Badgers start 4 seniors; play 4th-slowest pace in country and have only made 32% of 3’s so far. Georgetown was up 17 at half vs Oregon, hung on for win; Hoyas lost at home to Maryland/Ark State; their last three games were decided by total of 11 points. Pryor had 26 yesterday; he is Hoyas’ only senior who plays- they forced turnovers 26% of time so far- interesting matchup here against Wisconsin squad that turns ball over 22.5% of time..

Oklahoma State is 4-0, scoring 104.8 pts/game; they beat UConn 98-90 yesterday in foul fest where both teams took 42 FTs. Two Cowboys played more than 27:00 (31-32)- they’re forcing turnovers 23.6% of time, are shooting 41% on arc. North Carolina had glorified practice over a D-II team last night; Tar Heels are 5-0 with no close games, no top 100 wins; they’re grabbing 49% of own missed shots- can Cowboys hold their own on boards? ACC teams/Big X teams split their last 22 meetings; ACC teams are 7-7 vs spread when favored. Big X teams are 3-0 vs spread this season as an underdog.

Barclay’s Center, Brooklyn
Texas is 3-1, with all three wins vs teams ranked #233 or worse; Longhorns start a freshman, two sophs- they lost by 19 to Northwestern last nite, going 13-27 on foul line- they were -9 on boards. Colorado got down big early last nite vs Notre Dame, rallied back but lost by 6; Buffs played 8 kids 10:00+, one more than 30:00- they start 4 seniors. Texas played one kid more than 27:00 last nite; they also played 8 guys 10:00+. These teams were Big X rivals up until 2010; Texas won last six series games. Big X teams are 12-6 vs spread this season.

Notre Dame plays Northwestern sometimes in football, but not in hoops; Irish used three kids 32+ minutes last nite, running out to big lead, holding on to win 89-83. ND starts two juniors, three seniors- they used two subs more than 9:00. Wildcats are playing to build tournament resume; they’ve never made NCAAs, but Texas win last nite is big. Northwestern is 3-1 with a 2-point loss at Butler; they’re shooting 42.2% on arc while starting 2 sophs, 2 juniors, playing one of 20 slowest tempos in country. This is a bigger game for Northwestern than Notre Dame.

Cancun Challenge
Auburn beat three stiffs to open season, winning by 17-18-21 points; they’re #3 in country at getting to foul line, where they’ve shot only 63.4%. Young Tigers (start 3 freshmen, 2 sophs) are forcing turnovers 25.5% of time (#15 in US); they’re playing #17 pace, with subs playing #22 minutes in country. Texas Tech has new coach, is #10 experience team in country- they’re 3-0 vs similar stiffs, #28 at protecting ball so far. Red Raiders are making 47.9% on arc while playing #271 pace. SEC teams are 18-19 vs spread; Big X teams are 12-6 vs spread.

Purdue is 2-1, losing by 3 at home to Villanova, then scoring last 20 points of game to beat a decent Georgia State team by 8. Boilers start four juniors and a soph; they’re still shaky vs quickness/pressure. Utah State is 4-0 with only top 200 win at Cal-Irvine; they’ve made 39.1% of 3-pointers. Mountain West teams are 4-3 vs spread as an underdog; Big 14 teams are 8-13 vs spread as favorites. Big 14 teams won three of last four games vs MW teams, but are just 1-3 vs spread in those games.

Indiana was +23 (51-28) on boards in 90-65 home win over Fort Wayne LY; this game is in Fort Wayne, has to be a big deal to have Hoosiers coming there. Indiana beat Kansas in OT out in Hawai’i; they beat two other stiffs at home after that. Hoosiers are shooting 44.3% on arc, but also turning ball over 25% of time. Matadors lost by 9 at Arkansas, 18 at Illinois State; they’re not a strong defensive team, bad news vs Hoosiers. Fort Wayne has a senior PG who is very good but they also start two sophs. Summit League underdogs are 10-10 vs spread this month.
