BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) James Blackmon Jr. made five 3-pointers, scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Robert Johnson added 16 points, as No. 6 Indiana sailed to a 100-78 victory over UMass Lowell on Wednesday night.

Blackmon made four 3-pointers and scored 20 of his 23 points in the first half of Indiana's regular season home opener.

The Hoosiers (2-0) were playing their first game since beating No. 3 Kansas in the Armed Forces Classic and had to overcome a slow, sloppy start. Indiana outscored UMass Lowell (1-2) 32-15 over the final 8:24 of the first half. Indiana shot 60 percent from the field (21 of 35) in the first half. The Hoosiers found scoring opportunities with sound passing, scoring 23 of their field goals off an assist.

Big men OG Anunoby and Thomas Bryant contributed to Indiana's onslaught. Anunoby scored 15 points and Bryant added nine. The Hoosiers outrebounded UMass Lowell 46-24. The 19 offensive rebounds helped the Hoosiers score 15 second-chance points.

Jahad Thomas finished with 16 points and Tyler Livingston scored 14 for the River Hawks.

No. 17 SAINT MARY'S 110, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 72

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Emmett Naar had 16 points and 11 assists to pace seven scorers in double figures for Saint Mary's.

Naar, an All-West Coast Conference pick as a sophomore last season who was held to six points in the Gaels' season-opener, shot 7 of 9 from the field. He scored eight points in the first 5 minutes of the second half, including two 3-pointers as part of a 15-4 run.

Jock Landale added 13 points and eight rebounds while Stefan Gonzalez had 14 points for Saint Mary's (2-0).

L.J. Westbrook had 13 points for Prairie View A&M (1-2), which was coming off a win over defending Mountain West champ Fresno State.

---

No. 21 RHODE ISLAND 79, BROWN 72

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) - Jared Terrell scored 18 points and E.C Matthews added 17 as Rhode Island won in Round Two of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off.

Hassan Martin added 12 points and Kuran Iverson had 11 as the Rams (3-0) defeated the Bears (1-2) for the 19th time in their last 21 meetings.

Rhode Island built a 36-21 lead late in the first half but Steven Spieth keyed a rally that enabled the Bears to pull within 41-33 at halftime.

The Rams scored 20 points off 13 Brown turnovers which offset the fact the Bears outrebounded Rhode Island 38-31.

Brandon Anderson had 16 points for Brown while Tavon Blackmon and Travis Fuller chipped in with 11 apiece.

---

No. 25 CALIFORNIA 75, UC IRVINE 65, OT

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Charlie Moore scored 38 points to break Shareef Abdur-Rahim's freshman record of 33 set in November 1995 and Stephen Domingo hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:10 left in overtime for short-handed California.

Kameron Rooks' tip-in with 23 seconds left in regulation tied the game and Jaron Martin failed to get off a shot for the Anteaters (1-2). Rooks scored a career-high 15 points to go with eight rebounds as Cal extended its home winning streak at Haas Pavilion to 21.

Martin scored a career-best 26 points with three key baskets over the final 6:11 of regulation.

Cal (2-0) missed three starters because of injuries: preseason All-America Ivan Rabb (toe), Jabari Bird (back) and Columbia transfer Grant Mullins (neck strain).

Top 40 Rankings
November 11, 2016

1-VILLANOVA
...It's been a decade since the Florida Gators recorded the last repeat national championship. And teams rarely pick up where they left off at the end of the previous season. But when last seen, Nova was the best team in the country, and much of the same cast returns, including national player of the year candidate swingman Josh Hart and various other components from Jay Wright's 2015-16 masterpiece. The bad news? Point guard Ryan Arcidiacono and C Daniel Ochefu were key cogs in the run to the title. And touted frosh recruit Omari Spellman has been ruled an "academic redshirt" and will not be eligible this season. But Jalen Brunson appears ready to make a smooth transition to the point, and no team matched the Cat chemistry last March. This year, the national title runs thru the Main Line.

2-WISCONSIN...It was a bit of a topsy-turvy 2015-16 for the Badgers, who somehow careened all of the way to the Sweet 16 in a campaign in which HC Bo Ryan retired at midseason. After a bit of a bumpy beginning in January, Ryan successor Greg Gard began to push many of the same correct buttons as did his predecessor, including some late-season tinkering to the old Badger "swing" offense that finally began to manifest in March. But the biggest news in the offseason was swingman Nigel Hayes pulling his name from the NBA Draft to return for another term in Madison. Gard thus returns his top five performers, with Hayes (15.6 ppg LY), G Bronson Koenig (13.1 ppg), and C Ethan Happ (12.4) all double-digit scorers a year ago.

3-OREGON...While the Duck football program has hit the skids, the hoopsters are going full throttle, with HC Dana Altman returning all but two members of last year's rotation that propelled the Ducks to a top regional seed and all of the way to the Elite Eight. Best of all, that includes PG Dylan Ennis, rather surprisingly granted a sixth year of eligibility in June. Ellis is only part of a star-studded returning cast led by F Dillon Brooks (16.7 ppg). Moreover, shot-blockers 6-10 Chris Boucher and 6-9 Jordan Bell patrol the paint. The Pac-12 is also good enough to give the Webfoots a test, but not brutal enough to wear them down. In March, the Ducks should again have a chance to stay in the West all of the way to the Final Four.

4-DUKE...First the bad news, as touted frosh Fs Jayson Tatum (foot) and Harry Giles (knee), plus C Marques Bolden (knee), were all hurt in preseason. and their availability for early-season games is unknown. The good news is that another diaper dandy, G Frank Jackson, will compete for time on the perimeter from the outset. And once all of these frosh get on the floor, Coach K might have something to behold, added to a mix that includes feisty G Grayson Allen (21.6 ppg), already the most hated player in the ACC (which is actually a compliment), and 6-9 sr. C Amile Jefferson, whose broken foot last December took the best rebounder out of the Blue Devil lineup. Krzyzewski's teams are beginning to look like Kentucky, which means it might be another bunch of one-and-dones next season. ACC sources cannot wait to see all of these latest frosh on the floor as they are being compared with some of Coach K's best-ever recruiting classes.

5-KENTUCKY..
.It is almost obligatory to put the Cats high in the preseason rankings as long as John Calipari is pulling the strings in Lexington. But before automatically drinking the UK Kool-Aid, consider that not all of Coach Cal's one-and-done editions are created equal. For example, last year's team lost nine games and didn't make it out the sub-regionals. And back in 2013, the Nerlens Noel team could only get to the NIT, where it lost off the bat to Robert Morris (when Noel was injured). This year's new names to remember include SG Malik Monk, PG De'Arron Fox, and C Bam Adebayo. The latter brings a physical, above-the-rim presence that the Cats lacked last season when they were KO'd by disliked Indiana in the second round. They reload, not replace, at Kentucky.

6-XAVIER...Chris Mack's Xavier teams have in the past hit their ceiling in the Sweet 16, and last year didn't make it that far, blowing a late lead in the second round of the Dance vs. Wisconsin. Expect that bitter exit, however, to act as a season-long motivator for the Musketeers, who boast perhaps the Big East's, and maybe the nation's, best perimeter in explosive wings soph Edmond Sumner and jr. Trevon Blueitt, and sr. PG Myles Davis. But the man to watch is Norfolk State grad transfer C Rashid Gaston, who was one of the best players in the MEAC when he almost averaged a double-double last season. The "X" also knows how to play away from Cintas Center, as 13 of its 28 wins a year ago were in road or neutral-court games.

7-NORTH CAROLINA...The best move made by the basketball team already happened in the summer when the Heels dodged what looked like severe penalties forthcoming from the NCAA. More about that in an upcoming issue. Suitably relieved, Roy Williams is assembling another deep, large, and cohesive team that nonetheless must compensate for the loss of important cogs (Brice Johnson & Marcus Paige) from the juggernaut that made it all of the way to the title game last April. As a year ago, it is a heavy upperclassmen-laden lineup led by Gs Nate Britt & Joel Berry, F Justin Jackson, and punishing C Kennedy Meeks, with frosh C Tony Bradley and all-name G Seventh Woods expected to make immediate contributions. The pieces are in place for UNC, as usual, to make a deep run in March.

8-KANSAS
...Another year, another loaded Jayhawk team, though Bill Self has to fill in some important gaps after Wayne Selden and the timeless Perry Ellis (how old was he when he graduated, anyway?) have finally departed Lawrence. But the backcourt is still top-notch with Frank Mason III and Devonte' Graham as established components, and the hype is on overload for 6-8 frosh swingman Josh Jackson, already being compared favorably to another ex-KU one-and-done phenom, Andrew Wiggins. With the Big 12 perhaps a bit watered down this season, the coast is clear for the Jayhawks to secure a top regional seed.

9-ARIZONA
...First the news of concern regarding star soph G Allonzo Trier, who has some eligibility issues and will likely not be available for early-season games, or until his status is clarified. Assuming Trier eventually returns, however, the Cats are loaded again and figure to be on the ascent in March, as this year's haul of blue-chip frosh (Gs Rawle Alkins & Kobi Simmons, and 7-0 Fin Lauri Markkanen) figures to be fully indoctrinated into the Sean Miller system by the time the Dance rolls around. Also it might help UA to not be wearing the Pac-12 target this season, as the Cats can develop at their own pace while Oregon garners most of this season's attention.

10-VIRGINIA
...Tony Bennett loses some key cogs (G Malcolm Brogdon and C Anthony Gill were longtime stalwarts), and the hangover from the bitter Elite Eight exit at the hands of Syracuse could linger for a while. But Bennett has established the Cavs as a force effectively equal to Duke and North Carolina in the ACC, and PG London Perrantes is the perfect Bennett prototype PG, solid on defense, willing creator on the attack end, and steely enough to shoot 3s when needed. Memphis transfer Austin Nichols wowed at times with the Tigers and should be able to fit into the Bennett system seamlessly.

11-PURDUE.
..The bitter taste of the sub-regional exit at the hands of Little Rock remains. But that could also provide fuel this term for the Boilermakers and HC Matt Painter, who breathed a huge sigh of relief when valued frontliners Vince "Ben Casey" Edwards and Caleb Swanigan pulled their names out of the NBA Draft to return for another go in West Lafayette.

12-GONZAGA...The Zags thought they had a legit shot at the Final Four last March until a late meltdown cost them in the Sweet 16 vs. Syracuse. Replacing frontliners Domantas Sabonis and Kyle Wiltjer will be a task for HC Mark Few, and puts more pressure on 7-foot Polish C Przemek Karnowski to stay healthy this season. But Few hit the jackpot in this year's transfer derby with the arrival of ex-Washington G Nigel Goss-Williams, one of the Pac-12's top guards when featured for Lorenzo Romar's Huskies, and ex-Cal swingman Jordan Matthews.

13-LOUISVILLE...Never want to underestimate a Rick Pitino-coached team, but off-court distractions continue to mount at the 'Ville, which endured a self-imposed postseason ban last season as it awaits an NCAA inquiry. For now, Pitino's team is at least slated to compete in the ACC Tourney, and we'll see what happens thereafter. No matter, Pitino has overcome those sorts of things before, though he also must get beyond the loss of top scorers Trey Lewis and Damion Lee, who parachuted in for one season a year ago. ACC sources believe G Quentin Snider can assume go-to scoring duties, while 6-7 frosh V.J. King figures to become a force sometime during the season.

14-WEST VIRGINIA...With Oklahoma likely to regress a bit this season, the Mounties (who finished second in the league race last season) are likely to be the top challenger to Kansas in the Big 12. Lots of experience in the backcourt led by established Gs Jevon Carter, Daxter Miles, and Tarik Phillip. Bob Huggins will need some frosh frontliners, including touted 6-10 Maciej Bender, to hit the ground running. But WVU always plays smashmouth defense, and Huggy is expert at using his bench. They'll be dancing again in Morgantown.

15-UCONN... Kevin Ollie has proven beyond a doubt that he is an elite coach. And many regional observers thought the Huskies were poised to make another surprising deep run last March until running into loaded Kansas a bit too early in the second round of the Dance. Now they are comparing the latest UConn recruiting haul to the vintage 1991 class that netted future NBA draftees Donny and Donyell Marshall. Key G Rodney Purvis and C Amida Brimah (a holdover from Ollie's 2014 title team) are still around to provide leadership.

16-MICHIGAN STATE
...After an unexpected one-and-done in the Big Dance and the departure of longtime stalwart Denzel Valentine, the Spartans are in something of a rebuild mode this season. But it also looks as if it could be another Tom Izzo special, with a young core likely to have matured by the time March rolls around. MSU's frosh class, led by blue-chip Fs Joshua Langford and Miles Bridges, rates favorably with the nation's best, while there is experience in the backcourt led by all-name G Lowrawls Nairn, Jr. (enough with the "Tum-Tum" nickname...don't these announcers realize the ultimate cool of Nairn's first name?) and Eron Harris.

17-CREIGHTON...Looking for a potential breakthrough team in the Big East? Try Creighton, flying at NIT-level since Doug McDermott's graduation a couple of years ago. Add to the mix Kansas State transfer G Marcus Foster, who will team with holdover PG Maurice Watson in a lightning-like backcourt, and the Bluejays are ready to make some noise once again.

18-INDIANA...Tom Cream did not look quite as tortured last season as he got the Hoosiers to another Sweet 16 and beat Kentucky along the way in the second round of the Big Dance. Life after G Yogi Ferrell begins this season, but Crean does get back G James Blackmon, Jr., who was scoring almost 16 ppg before going down with a knee injury that caused him to miss the last 23 games a season ago. Soph C Thomas Bryant is a potential dominator on the blocks who hit nearly 70% of his FG tries last season and gives IU effective inside-outside scoring balance with Blackmon.

19-CINCINNATI...Mick Cronin was able to squeeze an improved contract out of Cincy after dabbling with the UNLV opening in the offseason. Now Cronin presides over what could be his best offense in several years, with double-digit scorers G Troy Caupain and F Gary Clark still in the mix. The Bearcats will be typically tough and enter the season no worse than co-favorite in the American along with UConn.

20-COLORADO...We have come to appreciate Buff HC Tad Boyle, who has won at all career stops. He will be adjusting on the fly this season now that four-year starting C Josh Scott has finally graduated. More "small ball" in store for CU, which has the pieces to do so, especially with the healthy return of swingman Xavier Johnson, sidelined with an Achilles tendon tear, and explosive running mate George King. 6-5 D-II transfer Derrick White (a prolific scorer at CU-Colorado Springs) might also make an impact.

21-BUTLER...Coach Chris Holtmann has to fill in a couple of important gaps after stalwarts Kellen Dunham and Roosevelt Jones (who accounted for 38% of the Bulldogs' points last season) have departed. But Holtmann's Butler has impressed with its toughness and grit, and that does not figure to change. Junior F Kellen Martin should be able to assume go-to scoring duties as the Bulldogs likely slow the pace a bit more this term, which should make our favorite mascot Blue the bulldog quite happy.

22-SAINT MARY'S... The Gaels have unfortunately emerged as the team most likely to get defended by Doug Gottlieb after being snubbed again on Selection Sunday. Maybe not this season, however, as Randy Bennett returns all five starters from last year's 27-win team, paced by Aussie sharpshooters Emmett Naar and Dane Pineau. Whatever, SMC remains a joy to watch.

23-SAN DIEGO STATE...Last season, another loss in the Mountain West Tourney finale (this time vs. Fresno State) cost the Aztecs a Big Dance bid. Some bad pre-league losses hurt a year ago, but don't expect a repeat as SDSU enters as the team to beat in the MW. A nice core returns with soph PG Jeremy Helmsley, jr. wing Trey Kell, and jr. C Malik Pope, with 6-6 Mizzou transfer Montaque Gill-Caesar and touted 6-9 frosh Jalen McDaniels likely to make immediate contributions.

24-VIRGINIA TECH...Looking for a sleeper in the ACC? Try the Hokies, who began to stir in the second half of last season, suggesting that it only took Buzz Williams a year-and-half to get his system working in Blacksburg. Buzz returns his top four scorers from a year ago, led by F Zach LeDay (15.5 ppg) and G Seth Allen (14.7 ppg).

25-RHODE ISLAND...Regional sources believe a team to watch in the A-10 could be the Rams, who might have emerged a year ago for HC Dan Hurley had star G E.C. Matthews not suffered a season-ending knee injury in mid-November. Matthews (16.9 ppg in 2014-15) has returned, as do four other starters from a year ago, including workhorse 6-7 F Hassan Martin (12 ppg), who provides the necessary floor balance...especially with Matthews back in the fold.

26-CHATTANOOGA...When last seen the might Mocs were rolling thru the SoCon en route to 29 wins and a Big Dance berth, even without what was their leading scorer the previous year, G Casey Jones, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in early December. Jones now returns to a lineup with four returning starters that matured in his absence a year ago. Second-year HC Matt McCall (a Billy Donovan disciple) is going to be hard to keep in Chattanooga beyond this season.

27-MICHIGAN...No team has dealt with as much bad injury luck the past couple of seasons as the Wolverines, who still slogged their way to 23 wins a year ago even minus star G Caris LeVert for much of the ride. John Beilein now welcomes back a core that matured in a hurry last season and features a perfect Beilein catalyst at the point in PG Derrick Walton, Jr. How far up the Big Ten ladder the Wolverines can climb likely depends upon contributions from frosh bigs Austin Davis and Jon Teske.

28-UNC-WILMINGTON...One of the "hot stocks" among young coaches is UNCW's Kevin Keatts, a Rick Pitino disciple who has worked magic with the Seahawks, winners of 25 a year ago and qualifiers for the Big Dance. UNCW is once again the team to beat in the Colonial as it returns four starters, including 6-5 sr. G Chris Flemmings (16.2 ppg LY), a former D-II transfer.

29-MARYLAND...We often wondered about the chemistry with the Terps a year ago, as they nonetheless advanced to the Sweet 16. Mark Turgeon welcomes back only one starter, but if he had to pick one to return, he could not have done better than jr. G Melo Trimble, who carried much of the load by scoring double-digits in the last 17 games a season ago. Key newcomers to watch are Duquesne grad transfer C L.J. Gill and frosh Gs Kevin Huerter and Anthony Cowan, who should help Trimble enough to get the Terps back to the Dance.

30-NEVADA...Eric Musselman proved to be one of the shrewdest coaching hires in the nation a year ago, as the Wolf Pack increased from 9 to 24 wins and the CBI title after the end of the preceding David Carter regime. Along the way Musselman deployed 6-8 frosh F Cam Oliver, who matured into a monster by season's end and opted against an early entry into the NBA Draft to return for what promises to be a banner soph season. Musselman returns a couple of other starters, plus welcomes a load of potential impact transfers, led by former Mizzou State G Marcus Marshall, who was scoring almost 20 ppg for the Bears before leaving the team midway thru the 2014-15 season.

31-DAYTON...Archie Miller continues to resist overtures from elsewhere and remains at Dayton, one of the truly good mid-major jobs in the country. The Flyers should get back to the Dance once more with an experienced core of seniors Gs Kyle Davis and Scoochie Smith, wing Charles Cooke, and frontline warrior Kendall Pollard. The Flyers resemble the handful of senior-laden teams that made an impact into the Dance a year ago.

32-OHIO STATE...After a brief detour thru the NIT last season, Thad Matta can return the Buckeyes to the Dance, with all five starters and the top six scorers returning from last year's 21-14 team. Defense was a hallmark last season when the Bucks permitted only 40.4% FG shooting. Big Ten sources expect a major improvement by soph G JaQuan Lyle.

33-WICHITA STATE...By the end of last season Gregg Marshall had the Shockers poised for another deep March run until some unfortunate scheduling and an early tip-off in the second round vs. Jim Larranaga's Miami proved too much to overcome. Earlier, Wichita had gotten off to a slow start due in part to an injury suffered by G Fred VanVleet, who, along with longtime running mate Ron Baker, has finally graduated. But the Shockers still look the class of the Missouri Valley. Look for last year's Valley frosh of the year Markus McDuffie to assume go-to scoring role post-Baker and VanVleet.

34-OKLAHOMA...An otherwise uplifting 2015-16 campaign ended on a crushing note with the 95-51 blowout loss at the Final Four vs. a Villanova team that OU had whipped earlier in the season. Now Lon Kruger embarks upon a rebuild after almost all of last season's key cogs (including high NBA draft pick bombs-away G Buddy Hield) departed Norman. Kruger, however, has won a lot over the past 30 years at a variety of locales with a variety of different teams, and does return glue guy sr. PG Jordan Woodard. Some of last season's role players off of the bench (such as 6-7 F Jordan Buford) will now get their chances, and 6-5 juco Darren Strong gives Kruger the option of playing two point guards on the floor (with Woodard) at the same time, as he did a year ago with Woodard and Isaiah Cousins.

35-TEXAS...By the end of last season it was easy to see the progress HC Shaka Smart was making in his first season with the Longhorns, qualifying for the Dance en route. Now Shaka has more work to do, as all five starters departed after last year's 20-win campaign. But do not feel bad for Smart, who rolls in a pair of 6-10 frosh, James Banks and Jarrett Allen (who will remind Horn backers of Myles Turner), big men who can get up and down the floor in the preferred Shaka fashion. Frosh Gs Jacob Young and Andrew Jones enter with plenty of hype. It's a mostly new-look, but "Shaka Ball" could be a load by March.

36-CAL...Though Cuonzo Martin could not prevent one of last year's frosh stars, Jaylen Brown, from leaving early for the NBA Draft, or for valued swingman Jordan Matthews from exercising his grad transfer rights (to Gonzaga), at least last season's other star newcomer, versatile frontliner Ivan Rabb, decided to stick around Berkeley for another season. This is also the time for former 5-star recruit 6-6 sr. G Jabari Bird to live up the one-time immense hype.

37-SETON HALL...Despite last year's 25 wins and Big Dance berth, plus the return of four starters, the Hall is still flying a bit under the radar. Perhaps because star G Isaiah Whitehead, a high-volume scorer, opted for the NBA Draft. And the Pirates were on fumes down the stretch when they lost nine of their last ten. But the offense figures to be better-balanced without Whitehead, especially if 4-star recruits Myles Powell and Eron Gordon step into the breach in the backcourt as expected. Kevin Willard has also proven he can coach.

38-SOUTHERN CAL...At the end of last season we were prepared to place the Trojans a lot higher after their breakthrough 21-win season that took some of the heat off of HC Andy Enfield. But that was before three seniors-to-be (Gs Katin Reinhardt and Julian Jacobs, and C Nikola Jovanovic) decided to depart in the offseason. (Jovanovic and Jacobs were not selected in the NBA Draft; Reinhardt now a grad transfer at Marquette). But plenty of firepower exists on a Trojan roster fueled by go-go G Jordan McLaughlin (13.4 ppg LY) and emerging 6-10 soph Bennie Boatwright (11.5 ppg as a frosh), a matchup headache very comfy in Enfield's fast-paced "Dunk City" style. Lots of potential also exists within 6-5 jr. Elijah Stewart.

39-UT-ARLINGTON...The team to beat in the Sun Belt, the Movin' Mavs return all starters from last year's 24-win, CIT team, including explosive F Kevin Hervey (18.1 ppg), who missed the last six weeks of the 2015-16 season with a torn ACL, as UTA was cruelly denied the Belt crown. But underrated HC Scott Cross has taken teams to the Dance before and has everyone back, including a now-healthy Hervey and valuable PG Erick Neal, who ignites the Mavs' transition game.

40-HARVARD...The Crimson took a bit of a pause last season after Tommy Amaker's run of Big Dance bids. Part of that had to do with the season-ending ACL injury to star PG Siyani Chambers before the 2015-16 campaign even tipped off. Now Chambers is back, along with three other starters from a year ago, including soph sharpshooting wing Corey Johnson, who set a school single-season record with 74 triples a year ago. Note that the Ivy League has joined the rest of college hoops with a postseason tourney (think of it!) that will involve the top four finishers!

Thursday’s six-pack

NFL trends with Week 11 on the way…….

— Saints are 10-4 vs spread in their last 14 games.

— Chicago is 3-11 vs spread in its last 14 games.

— Browns are 6-16-1 in their last 23 games as an underdog.

— Cowboys won/covered their last eight games.

— New England is 32-11 coming off a loss.

— Colts are 9-2 coming off a bye.

Thursday’s List of 13: NFL’s top 9, bottom 4 teams……

32) Browns— Hurting Steelers come to Lake Erie this week needing a win. Chances are they will get it. Cleveland was outscored 60-8 in second half of its last three games.

31) 49ers— They’ve lost eight games in a row (1-7 vs spread); now Tom Brady is coming back near his hometown this week, so very little shot that New England will let down. Not good.

30) Jaguars— Offensive coordinator they fired few weeks ago is rumored to be candidate to be the new coach at Purdue. Jacksonville is -12 in turnovers the last five games.

29) Bears— Read few different national writers Monday speculating that Jay Cutler’s days in the Windy City may be numbered. Usually when there is speculation, someone has tipped off the person doing the speculating.

9) Dolphins— Won/covered last four games, picked Rivers off four times, just in 4th quarter last Sunday. Interesting game in the Coliseum this week, against the Rams in Jared Goff’s NFL debut.

8) Giants— Six wins by total of 21 points; they’re finding ways to win close games, just like they found ways to lose close games the last three years.

7) Chiefs— They’re 18-3 in their last 21 games, but they’ve also scored only one offensive TD in their last two games.

6) Broncos— 3-3 in last six games after a 4-0 start; if the defense doesn’t force turnovers, they are going to struggle.

5) Falcons— Bye week comes after their worst offensive game of the year. At 6-3, Atlanta is in good shape to return to the playoffs for first time in four years.

4) Seahawks— Wilson looked more nimble in Foxboro last week; if he is mobile, then Seahawks are very good.

3) Raiders— Haven’t been in the playoffs since 2002, when they lost the Super Bowl to the Bucs, but right now, they’re as good as anyone.

2) Patriots— Still think they’re the best team, but if Gronkowski is out for any length of time, then no.

1) Cowboys— Not often an NFL QB holds a news conference to say his former backup deserves to be the starter. Thats how well Dak Prescott is playing this season- he might be the MVP if the season ended today.

Thursday’s games

Temple split its first two games, beating LaSalle in OT, then a bad home loss to New Hampshire last game. UMass split its first two games, playing at #2 tempo in country; they lost 90-88 at Ole Miss Monday after leading by 8 at half; Minutemen took 36 FTs, Rebels 46 in game that UMass was outscored in 11-0 over last 3:49. Minutemen lost 3 starters from LY but has best freshman class school has had in a decade. Temple has a depleted roster because of injuries. A-14 home favorites are 4-9 vs spread this season.

Providence lost Dunn/Bentil to NBA this year; Friars have 2 starters back from LY’s 24-11 team that won beat USC in NCAAs- they beat Vermont by 22 in opener- game was 34-28 at half. Ohio State beat Navy 10 by 10, NC Central by 6 to open its season; Buckeyes turned ball over 21.9% of time in first two games (#255 in country). OSU has all five starters back from team that was 3-4 in last 7 games LY and missed NCAAs. Big 14 home favorites are 5-4 vs spread so far this month. Big East teams are 6-2 vs spread, but haven’t played that many lined games yet.

DePaul outscored Robert Morris 27-15 on foul line in 78-72 win in their opener. Blue Demons have four 3-star recruits and are expected to improve this year- their last winning season was 10 years ago. Rutgers beat Drexel by 21 after beating a stiff to open season; Scarlet Knights’ last winning season was 2006- they’ve got new coach this year. Big 14 home favorites are 5-4 vs spread so far this month.

Seton Hall beat couple stiffs by 21-24 points to open season; Pirates have nucleus of juniors back (4 starters are back) though star Whitehead did bolt to NBA.- they’re expected to be up with Villanova/Xavier atop Big East. Iowa lost 4 starters from LY’s 22-11 team that won an NCAA game in OT LY, then lost to Villanova in 2nd round. Hawkeyes beat two cupcakes to open this season, winning by 17-32 points- they’ve got only 2 juniors and one senior.

Oregon lost by 17 at Baylor Monday, with best player Brooks out injured- he isn’t expected to play here, ether. Ducks still have 3 other starters back from 31-7 team that made Sweet 16 LY. Oregon beat Valparaiso 73-67 at home LY, after trailing by 4 with 13:30 left. Crusaders made just 10-32 on arc- they’ve got new coach now. Valpo is already 3-0, with D-I wins by 14-20 points over stiffs; they’ve got 3 starters back from 30-7 team Pac-12 home favorites are 7-4 vs spread this month. Horizon road underdogs are 5-1 against the spread.

UConn lost its first two games to Wagner/Northeastern; they’re 0-2 for first time since 1968; as they head to Hawaii for Maui Classic, they stop for game at Loyola Marymount team that is 47-73 in last 4+ years, 15-41 in WCC games. Lions lost by 15 at Nevada after beating a stiff to open season- Nevada shot 68% inside arc against them. LMU has 3 starters back from LY. UConn has five freshmen who are learning college ball the hard way. AAC teams are 4-4 vs spread so far this season. WCC teams are 9-9 vs spread, 3-3 as an underdog.

Davidson’s star G Gibbs is on injury list, check status; Wildcats beat Appalachian State 86-74 in their opener (Gibbs didn’t play), after being down 3 with 10:00 to go. Davidson has 4 starters back from a 20-13 team that made NIT. Davidson was 0-3 vs ACC teams LY, losing by 10-25-33 points to Fla State-Pitt-UNC. Hurley brought in three 4-star recruits this year, so ASU is younger, much more talented than recent years. MVC teams are 5-6 against the spread so far this month; Pac-12 teams are 9-5.

Wake Forest opened this season with wins over stiffs by 21-20 points; Deacons lost 3 starters back from 11-20 team that went 2-16 after looking promising in Maui last November. Manning is gradually upgrading Wake’s talent level but it is a slow process. Texas-El Paso has 3 starters back from 19-14 team; their PG Artis was once a starter at Oregon. Floyd was an NBA coach, is building Miners back up- they haven’t been to NCAAs since 2010. ACC favorites are 10-3 vs spread this month. C-USA underdogs are 7-1 vs spread.

Mississippi State was 14-19 LY in Howland’s first season there; they had a solid recruiting class, are expected to be better, but they struggled with Norfolk State in opener, winning 78-74- game was tied at half. Central Florida has new coach (Dawkins), not much depth or many returning players— he has a bit of a rebuild on his hands. Knights won first game by 24 over Nicholls State, but it was a 5-point game with 10:00 left. SEC favorites are 7-9 vs spread this month; AAC teams are 4-4 vs spread, 1-1 as underdogs.

Charleston hosts this tournament; they won first two games this month by 13-7 over Coastal Carolina, Citadel. Cougars have all 5 starters back from LY’s 17-14 team, have recruited well in Grant’s two years as coach, are expected to contend for CAA title this year. Boise State is long away from home; they played a stiff in first game, lost 4 starters from LY’s 20-14 team that won 20+ games for 4th year in row. Boise has lot of new guys this year, may take step back. MW teams are 4-5 vs spread this month. CAA teams are 6-6 against the spread.

Pitt lost 3 starters and its coach from a 21-12 team; fanbase got tired of Dixon, so he went back to TCU, his alma mater. Panthers needed double OT to beat Eastern Michigan in its opener, then beat Gardner-Webb by 19- they’ve got decent experience level. SMU has a new coach too; they won first two games by 28-27 points over same two teams that Pitt beat- Mustangs forced TO’s 27.1% of time in first two games, but also turned it over 23.4% of time. ACC teams are 10-4 vs spread this month, all as favorites; AAC teams 4-4, 3-3 as favorites.

Michigan won its first two games by 18-12 points; Beilein has all new assistant coaches this year, possibly a tactical upgrade. CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Eric Paschall had 17 points, including a 3-pointer with 2:50 to go, to help rally No. 3 Villanova past Western Michigan 76-65 at the Charleston Classic on Thursday.

The defending national champion Wildcats opened 3-0 for the fourth straight season. Not that it was easy after Western Michigan cut a 14-point second-half lead to 59-56 with 6 minutes left. That's when Villanova took off on a 13-4 run to secure the game, helped by 3-pointers by Kris Jenkins, Paschall and Josh Hart for a 72-60 lead. Western Michigan never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The Wildcats will face Wake Forest on Friday for a spot in Sunday's championship.

Thomas Wilder led The Broncos (1-2).

---

No. 4 OREGON 76, VALPARAISO 54

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Chris Boucher had 25 points and nine rebounds to lead Oregon to its 27th consecutive home victory.

Jordan Bell added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Ducks (2-1), who took control early in the second half with an 11-4 run fueled by Bell's eight points to open a 52-38 lead. Bell scored 12 points in the second half as Oregon shot 15 of 27 from the field

Alec Peters led the Crusaders (3-1) with 24 points to become the school's second-leading career scorer.

Backup freshman point guard Payton Pritchard had nine points and five assists for the Ducks, who led by as many as 25 points in the second half.

Oregon had a 40-27 rebounding edge and blocked six shots.

---

No. 9 WISCONSIN 69, CHICAGO ST. 51

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Vitto Brown scored 12 points and Khalil Iverson added 11 for Wisconsin.

Bronson Koenig added 10 points for Wisconsin (2-1), while Fred Sims scored 26 points to lead Chicago State (1-1).

The Badgers again struggled with their outside shooting after taking 39 3-point attempts, but hitting just 11 in Tuesday's loss to No. 22 Creighton.

The Badgers hit 5 of 19 from 3-point range on Thursday. But they had little trouble with the Cougars inside as they pulled away.

The Cougars took an 8-0 lead in the opening minutes. But Wisconsin then held them scoreless for the next 9 minutes to go up 19-8. The Badgers pulled away from there.

---

No. 11 Xavier 83, Missouri 82, OT

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - Edmond Sumner's free throw with 0.3 seconds left in overtime gave Xavier the victory in the opening round of the Tire Pros Invitational.

Sumner was fouled by Missouri's Terrence Phillips along the sideline, after the Musketeers inbounded the ball near midcourt. He missed the first one short, then rattled in the second for the win.

Sumner and J.P. Macura scored 19 points each for Xavier (3-0), which got 13 apiece from Trevon Bluiett and Sean O'Mara.

Frankie Hughes scored 24 points for Missouri (1-1), and Kevin Puryear finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

---

No. 12 LOUISVILLE 88, LONG BEACH ST. 56

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Jaylen Johnson had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Deng Adel added 11 points for Louisville.

The Cardinals (3-0) outscored the 49ers 23-2 over 5:28 in the first half for a 30-8 lead en route to their third straight 30-point win to open the season. Louisville's height advantage made the difference on both ends as it controlled scoring in the paint 42-20 and rebounding 51-37.

Evan Payne had 15 points for the 49ers (1-3), who made 18 of 61 from the field (30 percent).

---

No. 16 UCLA 88, SAN DIEGO 68

LOS ANGELES (AP) - T.J. Leaf had 26 points and 10 rebounds and fellow freshman Lonzo Ball added 13 points for UCLA.

Thomas Welsh had 12 points and 11 rebounds as one of six players in double figures for the Bruins (3-0), who failed to top 100 points for the first time this season. They averaged 110.5 points in victories over Pacific and Cal State Northridge.

San Diego's Brett Bailey tied his career high with 22 points and Cameron Neubauer added a career-best 14 points despite playing the second half with three fouls.

Bailey's 3-pointer drew the Toreros (0-3) within four points early in the second half before Leaf and Ball teamed up for an entertaining offensive show.

---

No. 23 TEXAS 85, E. WASHINGTON 52

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Tevin Mack scored 19 points and Texas rolled to an easy victory.

Texas had five players score in double figures as the Longhorns' entirely new starting lineup has started smoothing out the rough edges in their 3-0 start to the season.

Freshman Andrew Jones scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Kendal Yancy scored 10 points, opening the game with consecutive 3-pointers, and Texas built a 39-24 lead at halftime.

Bogdan Bliznyuk scored 22 points for Eastern Washington (1-2).

Chaminade in 1982: Witnessing one of sports' greatest upsets
November 18, 2016

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) Chaminade's 77-72 victory over Ralph Sampson and top-ranked Virginia in 1982 is widely considered the biggest upset in college basketball history, among the greatest in any sport.

Unlike today's world of 24-hour sports networks, social media and smartphones, the game was played in relative obscurity.

Fewer than 4,000 fans, officials, media and team members were inside Blaisdell Center that day. For those who were there, the memory of what happened on Dec. 23, 1982, left the kind of indelible mark that comes with witnessing history.

Three of those people - Silverswords point guard Mark Rodrigues, Washington Post sports writer Michael Wilbon and public address announcer Chuck Williams - recall the events surrounding that game.

---

Rodrigues: ''The year before when we played them, we didn't get beaten too badly, so we were pretty confident, had a bit of cockiness. Everyone is a little bit cocky and we had the mentality that we could beat anyone.''

Few outside the team gave them much of a shot.

Williams: ''It was really only the die-hard fans there because we probably should have been 40-point underdogs to Virginia. It was going to be a smash.''

---

But the Silverswords had an advantage.

Virginia was coming from Tokyo, where it beat Utah and Houston despite Sampson missing both games. He was still sick when the Cavaliers arrived in Hawaii.

Wilbon: ''I was staying in the same Hyatt Regency as Virginia. Ralph was on my floor and with those circle towers, there's not much space between rooms and I could hear Ralph coughing and wheezing. I didn't think Ralph was going to play and there was opportunity for some drama.''

Wilbon already had a bit of drama while covering Maryland at the Aloha Bowl.

Terps defensive back Bobby Gunderman fell and broke his arm on the way to the airport, then somehow ended up flying to Caracas, where he was detained for being a suspected drug dealer. Maryland receiver Mike Lewis also nearly drowned while swimming off Waikiki Beach.

Wilbon: ''My boss, George Solomon, said `You've already written too many pieces, take the night off.' I said, I'm not taking the night off. How many chances to see the No. 1 team play in an exotic situation, a different situation, Ralph Sampson already three-time player of the year? There was no way I was going to miss that.''

Wise decision.

---

Inside the locker room at Blaisdell, Silverswords coach Merv Lopes turned off the lights so the players could meditate, then went down the line.

Williams: ''He says to Mark Wells: Mark, is this guy faster than you? No. Can he shoot better than you? No, coach. He goes all the way down the line to Tony Randolph who was going against Ralph Sampson, looked at him and said, `What can I say?' Everyone got a laugh out of that.''

Rodrigues: ''The point is they're only as good as you allow them to be. One of the things he always said was, if they take 40 steps, you take 41. He didn't say anything else but let's go give the people something to see.''

They did.

----

The Silverswords were the aggressors from the start, scoring six of the game's first eight points. They swarmed Sampson whenever he touched the ball and had a game plan for getting him away from the basket on defense - one that started with Randolph shooting jumpers over a team manager holding a broomstick at practice.

Williams: ''In locker room, Merv said to Tony Randolph, you need to go out there and hit 15-foot jump shots to get that monster of a player out away from the basket. Tony hit five or six shots in a row from medium range and brought Ralph out, which opened things up for the other guys. That was the real key. If he was throwing bricks up there, 1 for 7 of something like that, Ralph would just plant himself underneath.''

---

Chaminade continued to go at the Cavaliers and the game was tied 43-all at halftime, prompting a call from Wilbon to his desk.

Wilbon: ''I said are you guys listening to this on the radio? If this stays close, save me some space, don't put the paper to bed. They said OK.''

Rodrigues: ''At that point, it just gave us more confidence.''

When Virginia scored the first seven points of the second half, it appeared the game would turn quickly. But the Silverswords answered with a 7-0 run of their own.

Then Rodrigues found 6-foot guard Tim Dunham, who soared over the 7-foot-4 Sampson for an alley-oop dunk.

Rodrigues: ''People said from that point on, you could see it on Virginia's face that they knew they were in for a serious challenge.''

Williams: ''Sampson is running down the floor shaking his head, like he's saying I don't believe that. Timmy just went up, up, up ... slam! As I'm announcing, I see this thing unfolding and as the ball goes through, I'm saying Ti-iiiim Dunham!''

---

Chaminade led by two with a minute left and Virginia had three chances to tie, missing all three. Virginia's Othell Wilson was then called for a carrying violation and the Silverswords closed out the improbable victory by hitting three free throws.

Wilbon: ''People were in disbelief. It wasn't like today. I don't remember people rushing the floor. It might have been chaotic then, but not by today's standards. You had the biggest upset in the history of college basketball and no one quite knew what to do.''

Williams: ''Richard Haenisch, I don't know he did it, he ended up sitting on the rim with a basketball in his hand. The celebration was crazy.''

Rodrigues: ''We went into the locker room and the fans were calling for us to come back. We came back out on the court, sat there for a while, celebrated and talked.''

---

After the game, Wilbon waited to get Virginia coach Terry Holland before calling his desk.

Wilbon: ''It must have been the local AP reporter who said: `Coach, is this the greatest upset of all-time?' I remember almost looking down because this question is going to get us one and done. He's going to answer angrily and walk off. And I remember there was no sound coming out and Terry Holland was shaking his head affirmatively, saying something to the effect of I think it is. I was like `Oh my god, oh my god,' called the paper and asked are you guys listening. They were like, `Yeah, but we put the paper to bed.' I've never been angrier in my life, professionally because they put it to bed and the next morning there was nothing in my paper.''

Rodrigues: ''We didn't really realize how big it was until the next day. That's when AP was calling, everyone's sports department was calling, it was getting on CNN news, the local news and then you realize what really happened.''

Williams: ''They couldn't even pronounce the name of the school. They kept calling it, Chami-NADE, like lemonade.''

---

The shockwaves of the upset took a while to reach the mainland, but continue to resonate today.

Williams: ''It put Chaminade on the map, a little school 2,500 miles from the nearest land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.''

Rodrigues: ''They wanted to change the name of the school to Saint Louis-Honolulu, to have a more recognizable name in the title. They changed their mind after that game.''

Wilbon: ''Every day I get further away from it, I realize it's the greatest upset in history. Can you imagine Kentucky losing to an NAIA school? The whole thing was surreal. It wasn't the game that was surreal, it was the surroundings of it. It was just not possible for it to happen.''

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

— Panthers 23, Saints 20— New Orleans had a FG blocked which resulted in a 10-point swing. No bueno.

— UConn 65, LMU 62— Huskies narrowly avoid an 0-3 start.

— Xavier 83, Missouri 82 OT— Tigers lost but are way better than they’ve been last few years.

— Arkansas State 78, Georgetown 72— Tough week for the Hoyas.

— Astros gave Josh Reddick $52M for four years, also traded for Brian McCann. Neither one of those two guys pitches.

—Houston 36, Louisville 10– Cougars just play better when they’re an underdog- they lost 38-16 at SMU. How?

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: What I’m looking for this weekend

13) Jared Goff makes his NFL debut against Miami Sunday; Dolphins won/covered their last four games, so this’ll be an interesting challenge for the #1 pick in the draft.

If I’m calling plays, we let him chuck one deep on first play, just to send a message to defensive coordinators- the kid has a gun.

12) Big weekend in LA, with USC-UCLA in Rose Bowl Saturday; last nine of these rivalry games were decided by 10+ points. Bruins won three of last four meetings, but USC is the hot team right now.

11) Green Bay is in free fall, losing last three games while allowing 111 points- they were down 35-10 in 2nd quarter in Nashville LW. Redskins are 5-1-1 in last seven games after an 0-2 start- interesting Sunday night game.

10) Xavier-Clemson is an excellent college hoop game at 1:30 today from down in Orlando. This was supposed to be the Puerto Rico tournament but was moved to the Disney Wide World of Sports, due to concerns about the Zika virus.

Other semi-final in Orlando is Northern Iowa-Oklahoma.

9) Stanford beat California the last six years; Golden Bears’ defense has apparently gone on strike- they’ve been terrible last three weeks, but this is a bitter rivalry.

8) Detroit Lions are a 7-point favorite over Jacksonville; all nine Lions games have been decided by 7 or less points. Detroit has trailed in 4th quarter of every game.

7) As payment for being allowed to play ACC basketball, Notre Dame has to play so many ACC teams in football every year. This week is their first meeting with Virginia Tech; should be a fun game.

6) In its last three games, Tennessee averaged 12.2/7.3/9.8 yards/pass attempt- they’ve averaged 32 pts/game in their last six games, but Titans are 4-23 against the Colts, losing last eight visits here.

5) Underdogs won all three Duke-Pittsburgh games SU and two of them were wild shootouts (51-48/55-52). Panthers pulled a huge upset at Clemson last week; now they’re favored to win.

4) Minnesota is 5-4 after starting season 5-0; now Cardinals come limping into the Twin Cities at 4-4-1, in a pivotal game for both sides. That first round pick the Vikings dealt for San Bradford is beginning to look like it might’ve been too much.

3) West Virginia is a home underdog despite having only one loss this season; Oklahoma’s defense isn’t so good, but Sooners have won seven games in row, with only three of those at home.

2) Washington State-Colorado is the under-the-radar game of the week; both teams are vastly improved the last couple of years— this could be a preview of the Pac-12 title game.

1) Oakland-Houston play in Mexico City Monday night, where I’m guessing the locals weren’t too excited about our elections last week. Wonder if the 7-2 Raiders are regretting giving up a home game, now that they’re contenders?
