Game of the Day: Ducks at Kings
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at Los Angeles Kings (N/A)

Los Angeles leads series 2-1.

After sidestepping an 0-3 hole, the Anaheim Ducks attempt to even their Western Conference second-round series when they visit the Los Angeles Kings for Game 4 on Saturday. Anaheim dropped the first two games of the matchup at home, scoring a total of three goals in the process, before taking advantage of its power-play chances en route to a 3-2 triumph in Game 3 on Thursday. Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne each tallied with the man advantage and defenseman Ben Lovejoy added a much-needed goal late in the third period as the Pacific Division-champion Ducks continued the trend of road victories in the series.

Coach Bruce Boudreau switched from Jonas Hiller to Frederik Andersen in goal, citing the former's 0-5-2 career record at Staples Center as the reason. The move worked as the Danish rookie - who was 2-0-0 at Los Angeles during the regular season - limited the Kings to one goal on 23 shots. The 24-year-old Andersen suffered an apparent right leg injury midway through the third period, but Hiller came on and turned aside seven of the eight shots he faced - allowing only Mike Richards' first tally of the postseason with 31 seconds remaining.

TV:
9:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

LINE HISTORY:
The Kings opened as -150 home faves with a total of 5.

INJURY REPORT:
Ducks: G F. Andersen (Ques. Lower body), LW M. Beleskey (Ques. Undisclosed). Kings: D W. Mitchell (Ques. Lower body), D R. Regehr (Ques. Undisclosed).

ABOUT THE DUCKS:
With Andersen's status in question, Anaheim recalled John Gibson from Norfolk of the American Hockey League on Friday. The 20-year-old native of Pittsburgh was superb during his brief stint during the regular season, going 3-0-0 with a shutout while allowing only four goals on 87 shots. Defenseman Sami Vatanen made his NHL playoff debut in Game 3 and drew rave reviews from Boudreau. "I thought he was the best player on the ice for both teams," the coach said.

ABOUT THE KINGS:
While Anaheim went 2-for-2 on the power play Thursday, Los Angeles converted its only opportunity as Jeff Carter cashed in for his third goal of the postseason. The Kings are 8-for-28 with the man advantage over their last eight games after going 0-for-4 in their first two contests. Anze Kopitar extended his point streak to 10 games with his league-leading 11th assist, which also raised his postseason-best point total to 15.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-1-3 in the last nine meetings.
* Under is 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings in Los Angeles.
* Ducks are 5-2 in the last seven meetings and 4-0 in the last four in L.A.
* Road team is 6-0 in the last six meetings.

CONSENSUS:
61 percent of bettors are backing the L.A. Kings

One more for road team in Ducks' win

It's anything but "home sweet home" in the Freeway Faceoff series between the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings. For two teams that played well at home during the regular season, their performances in front of their fans have been disappointing during the Western Conference semifinals.

Winger Devante Smith-Pelly and center Ryan Getzlaf scored goals, rookie goaltender John Gibson made 28 saves and the Ducks defeated the Kings 2-0 on Saturday night.

Anaheim tied the playoff series at two wins each, with a pivotal Game 5 on Monday night at the Honda Center. The home team yet to win a game in the series.

Bruins put Habs on brink with Game 5 win

The Boston Bruins know their work against the rival Montreal Canadiens isn't over.

But they also know how important it was for them to win Game 5 at home Saturday night, taking a 3-2 lead in this Eastern Conference semifinal series with a 4-2 win.

"We did everything we wanted to," said Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask, who followed his Game 4 shutout with 29 saves. "Good start. Kept pushing, kept pushing, got the power-play goal. Never looked back, so it was a great effort from everybody."

NOTES: Bruins LW Milan Lucic, whose only goal of the series was an empty netter, was officially credited with seven hits Saturday. ... Montreal C Daniel Briere was a healthy scratch, with LW Brandon Prust back in the lineup. ... Saturday marked the 44th anniversary of Bobby Orr's Stanley Cup-winning goal, with Orr and Derek Sanderson, who passed to him on the winner, introduced to the crowd. It was also the 35th anniversary of the infamous too-many-men penalty the Bruins took against Montreal in Game 7 of the conference finals, the Canadiens winning the game before going on to win the Stanley Cup. ... Former Bruins C Ken Linseman was the team's honorary flag captain before Saturday night's game. ... G Carey Price played in his 39th playoff game with the Canadiens, tying Gump Worsley for fifth place on the team's all-time list.

Wild at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Wild at Chicago Blackhawks (-199, 5)

The Minnesota Wild attempt to buck the trend in their Western Conference second-round series when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks for Game 5 on Sunday. The home team has won each of the first four games in the matchup, with Chicago capturing the first two by a combined margin of six goals and Minnesota taking the next two by the same differential. The pattern was similar in the first round for the Wild, as the home club claimed each of the first six contests before Minnesota posted an overtime victory in Game 7 over the Avalanche in Colorado.

The reigning Stanley Cup-champion Blackhawks struggled at Xcel Energy Center, scoring a total of two goals in the two defeats. Chicago has lost two in a row for the second time this postseason, which it opened with a pair of overtime losses in St. Louis before reeling off six consecutive victories. Defenseman Jared Spurgeon helped the Wild even the series on Friday, registering a power-play goal and an assist as Minnesota improved to 5-0 at home in the playoffs while Chicago dropped to 1-4 on the road.

TV:
9 p.m. ET, CNBC, TSN, RDS2

ABOUT THE WILD:
Left wing Matt Moulson will miss his second straight game and defenseman Keith Ballard also will be sidelined as neither made the trip to the Windy City due to undisclosed injuries. Nate Prosser likely will replace Ballard, as he appeared in Minnesota's first nine games this postseason before being a healthy scratch for the last two. Matt Cooke made an impact in his return from a seven-game suspension on Friday, registering an assist as well as a game-high five hits.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS:
Chicago will be without center Andrew Shaw for the fourth consecutive contest due to a lower-body injury, which he suffered in the series opener. Left wing Brandon Bollig also is unavailable as he received a two-game suspension for boarding Ballard late in the second period of Game 4. Marian Hossa hopes to continue his torrid pace in the series as he has collected a goal and seven assists over the first four contests.

TRENDS:

* Wild are 1-7 in the last eight meetings in Chicago.
* Home team is 7-0 in the last seven meetings.
* Over is 15-6-5 in Wild last 26 overall.
* Blackhawks are 6-2 in their last eight vs. Central.

OVERTIME:

1. Chicago is a perfect 5-0 at home this postseason, while Minnesota is 1-5 on the road.

2. Three of the nine players with more than one game-winning goal in the playoffs are participating in this series. Chicago captain Jonathan Toews shared the league lead with three, while teammate Patrick Kane and Wild RW Nino Niederreiter have two apiece.

3. The Blackhawks have been held to fewer than 23 shots in each game of the series.

Game of the Day: Bruins at Canadiens
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens (+118, 5)

The Boston Bruins silenced the Bell Centre and turned the tide with an overtime triumph in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference second-round series. After posting a 4-2 victory on Saturday, the Presidents' Trophy-winning Bruins look to close out the series in Montreal as they face the Canadiens in a pivotal Game 6 showdown on Monday. Reilly Smith and Jarome Iginla scored power-play goals 32 seconds apart early in the second period as Boston moved within one victory of gaining a berth in the conference final for the third time in four seasons.

"Our power play was due," Bruins coach Claude Julien said matter-of-factly. Boston had failed on its first 10 opportunities with the man advantage in the series and 39 consecutive chances on the power play versus Montreal in the postseason dating to Game 2 of the 2009 first-round series. Tomas Plekanec assisted on Brendan Gallagher's goal on Saturday, but also committed three minor penalties - with the last two resulting in power-play goals for Boston.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

LINE HISTORY: The Canadiens opened as +120 home dogs, but have been bet down to +118. The total opened at 5.

INJURY REPORT: Bruins: C Chris Kelly (Out indefinitely, back), D Dennis Seidenberg (Out indefinitely, knee). Canadiens C Alex Galchenyuk (Questionable, knee).

ABOUT THE BRUINS: While his team was cooling off the Canadiens, cameras spotted enforcer Shawn Thornton squirting a water bottle at Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban as play was in progress late in Saturday's contest. TSN reported the league's hockey operations and safety division will discuss a potential fine for Thornton. Tuukka Rask has done his best to throw water on the Canadiens' offense, following his 33-save shutout in Game 4 by stopping 29 shots on Saturday.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS: Three years ago, Montreal found itself facing elimination heading back to the Bell Centre to host Boston in a pivotal Game 6 clash. Captain Brian Gionta scored the go-ahead goal early in the second period and Carey Price turned aside 31 shots as the Canadiens skated to a 2-1 victory. Montreal would love for a breakthrough from Gionta, who has been held off the scoresheet in each of the last four games and has just one assist in the series

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Montreal.
* Bruins are 11-3 in their last 14 Conference Semifinals games.
* Canadiens are 4-1 in their last five home games.
* Over is 5-1-1 in Bruins last seven overall.

CONSENSUS: 51 percent of wagers in the Covers Consensus are on the Bruins.

Penguins open as big home faves in Game 7

Sportsbooks have opened the Pittsburgh Penguins as -160 home favorites for their Game 7 meeting with the New York Rangers.

The Pens had the chance to close out the series in Game 6 Sunday, but lost 3-1 at Madison Square Garden.

Pittsburgh is a porous 1-2 on home ice in the series, with their only win coming in Game 2.

Road team bucking the trend for Ducks-Kings

Home-ice advantage is supposed to make a huge difference in the NHL Playoffs, but the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings don't subscribe to that theory.

In the past seven meetings between the Ducks and Kings the road team is a perfect 7-0, which includes all four games in their Round 2 series. During those seven games, the road team has outscored the home team 20-9 with hosts notching no more than one goal four times.

Despite this trend, the Kings are road dogs (+117) for Game 5 against the Ducks (-127) Monday.

Bruins try to finish off Habs in Game 6

May 11, 2014

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins have two chances to finish off the archrival Canadiens. They are only thinking about the first one.

''It's going to be awesome,'' Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller said, looking ahead to Game 6 in Montreal on Monday night. ''This is the biggest game -the hardest one to win. So, we need to be ready.''

The Bruins won 4-2 in Game 5 on Saturday night to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series and send the Canadiens to the brink of elimination. Game 6 is Monday at the raucous Bell Centre, with Game 7 back in Boston on Wednesday night, if necessary.

''We expect that we are going to have to play our best game yet,'' Bruins forward Jarome Iginla said. ''We know that they are going to try to use their crowd, and we are most likely going to need our best game of the series.''

The Canadiens swept through the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round and won the first game of the Eastern Conference semifinals in Boston. But since then, the Bruins have regained the form that took them to the Stanley Cup finals twice in three seasons.

The Bruins took a 1-0 victory on Matt Fraser's overtime goal in Game 4, then came home to speed out to a 3-0 lead. Reilly Smith and Iginla scored power-play goals 32 seconds apart early in the second period to help Boston pull away.

''They capitalized on a couple opportunities right at the start of the second period, and that was a tough hole to dig out of,'' Montreal goalie Carey Price said. ''We're going to stay positive. The series is not over yet. We're going home, and we're going to bring our absolute best.''

The Canadiens were in the same position in the first round against Boston in 2011, winning Game 6 at home before losing the seventh game in overtime. The Bruins went on to win the Stanley Cup.

''Some of our guys have done this before,'' center David Desharnais said. ''We're in front of our fans and we like the way we play at home.''

Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban said he thinks his team can do it.

''We have enough here. We just have to bring it facing elimination,'' he said. ''I still think that we are in a good spot. We are going back home. That's the barn, it's going to be loud. It's going to be full of energy. We are going to be ready to play, that's for sure.''

Subban has been at the center of much of the action so far in the series. He scored the winning goal in Game 1 and has four goals and three assists, and on Saturday night he was the victim of an odd controversy.

Bruins forward Shawn Thornton was caught by the TV cameras in the final minute spraying water from the bench at Subban, who had the puck. Thornton was fined $2,820.52 by the league on Sunday - the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.

Bruins coach Claude Julien said he did not approve of Thornton's behavior and let him know. Thornton said he got caught up in the moment.

Subban also said he would like to move on.

''I don't need you guys to make it a big deal out of it,'' he told reporters after the game. ''It is one of those irritating things when you're down 4-2. Listen, they beat us. That's not the reason why we lost. It's just one of those things that frustrates you even more towards the end of the game.''

Gibson to start for Ducks in Game 5

May 11, 2014

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - When John Gibson flew across the continent from Newfoundland a few days ago, he knew there was a good chance he would make his NHL postseason debut shortly after he finally landed in Southern California.

The Anaheim Ducks' 20-year-old goalie didn't exactly fidget in his seat or claw at the armrest, though.

''I got some sleep,'' Gibson said.

Gibson is not the type of guy who is easily disturbed, and he woke up the NHL when he arrived in the Stanley Cup playoffs, shutting out the Los Angeles Kings on the road Saturday to even the series.

The prodigy from Pittsburgh will get another chance in Game 5 on Monday night when the Ducks see how far they can go with a goalie who yawns at his youth and inexperience.

Coach Bruce Boudreau said Gibson will make the fifth start of his entire NHL career in a game to decide which team moves to the brink of the Western Conference finals.

Gibson would be under a mountain of pressure - if he actually noticed that sort of thing.

''It's not a difficult decision (in Game 5),'' Boudreau said. ''He came in. He played great. ... We knew L.A. hadn't seen him, so they probably wouldn't have a good scouting report on him.''

Gibson was imperturbable while winning the first showdown of his career with Conn Smythe Trophy winner Jonathan Quick, who got pulled by Kings coach Darryl Sutter after allowing two first-period goals in Game 4. Gibson claims he was having fun, but his teammates and coaches certainly couldn't tell.

''I saw that on a nightly basis all year, so that doesn't surprise me,'' said Ducks forward Devante Smith-Pelly, who scored in Game 4 after spending most of the season with Gibson and the AHL's Norfolk Admirals.

''Knowing his personality, I knew he would be all right. He just goes out and plays his game. Never gets rattled. He just comes in and does his routine. He's so relaxed, like it's a preseason game for him.''

The Ducks kept Gibson in the minors this year to keep him active instead of sitting behind Jonas Hiller or Frederik Andersen, but he made his NHL debut with a shutout in Vancouver last month. He still hasn't lost for the Ducks, going 4-0 while stopping 111 of 115 shots.

No NHL goalie had recorded a shutout in his first playoff game since Hiller, who did it in 2009.

Yet his new Anaheim fans and his older teammates still don't know much about Gibson - including 43-year-old Teemu Selanne, who had just finished his record-setting rookie season in Winnipeg when Gibson was born in 1993.

A quick primer on the goalie who rocketed to prominence by winning a bronze medal with the U.S. national team at last year's world championships:

Gibson got into hockey when his father took him to Penguins games, and he gravitated to goalie after a few games as a defenseman.

Curtis Joseph and Ryan Miller were his favorite netminders growing up, but more because of Joseph's cool masks and Miller's American citizenship than their playing styles.

Gibson didn't even design his own loud mask, instead allowing famed mask artist David Gunnarsson to pick basically whatever he wanted as long as a shoutout to Pittsburgh was on the back.

Gibson's aggressiveness and ability to cut down shooting angles remind many players of Quick. Others see Montreal's Carey Price in Gibson's size, precociousness and ability to make tough saves look routine.

''I think he's got a nice sense of confidence about himself for a young goalie that hasn't accomplished much,'' Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano said. ''He carries himself real well. You see that a lot from Quick, so that's a good comparison.''

While the Ducks enjoyed their success Sunday, the Kings regrouped after their six-game postseason winning streak ended with back-to-back home losses. Los Angeles has little doubt it can recover during its third straight impressive postseason run.

Despite a strong start against their local rivals, the Kings have scored just three goals in the past eight periods of the series: One into an empty net, another on a power play, and a third with Quick pulled for an extra attacker.

''They have a lot of goalies,'' Kings forward Marian Gaborik said. ''They've been rotating them. Whoever is in net, we just have to try to get to them, create traffic and get more pucks to the net. Just challenge him more. Whoever is in there, we just have to find a way to score.''

Game of the Day: Rangers at Penguins
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-154, 5)

The New York Rangers look to complete the franchise's first successful rally from a 3-1 series deficit when they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins for a decisive Game 7 in their Eastern Conference second-round matchup on Tuesday. New York, which is 0-16 when trailing by a 3-1 margin in a series, staved off elimination for the second straight contest as Martin St. Louis and Carl Hagelin scored early in the first period to lead their team to a 3-1 victory in Game 6 on Sunday. "We knew if we played our best game, if we play the way we normally play, we're going to have a chance to come back and win the series," Rangers defenseman Marc Staal said. "We started that in Game 5, then in Game 6, and now we're in Game 7."

While Pittsburgh won the Metropolitan Division to earn home-ice advantage in this series, it is just 2-6 all-time in Game 7s in front of its fans. "All Game 7s are big, but we can't change what's gotten us to this point," captain Sidney Crosby said. "All we can do is make sure we show up (on Tuesday)." The Hart Trophy finalist, who has scored just one goal this postseason, showed his frustration by jabbing his stick below the belt of New York's Dominic Moore late in the second period on Sunday.

TV:
7 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE RANGERS:
Henrik Lundqvist has taken aim at the Penguins, and not just with his water bottle. The Swedish Olympian, who was fined $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct for spraying Crosby, stopped 67-of-69 shots over the last two contests to set up the pivotal Game 7 showdown. Lundqvist, who owns a 4-1 career mark in Game 7s while yielding just five goals, made 26 saves in New York's 2-1 triumph over Philadelphia the final contest of the first-round series on April 30.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS:
A punchless power play continues to plague Pittsburgh, which failed on its last 12 opportunities and fell to 1-for-19 in the series. Coach Dan Bylsma has taken to putting four forwards on the ice when his team enjoys the man advantage - with Matt Niskanen serving as the lone defenseman. "We didn't enter the zone quite as clean (and) they started pressuring a little bit more." Niskanen said of the team's last three power-play chances in Game 6. "The bottom line is, it comes down to results."

TRENDS:

* Over is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings in Pittsburgh.
* Rangers are 2-5 in their last seven games following a win.
* Under is 9-2-1 in Rangers last 12 vs. a team with a winning record.
* Road team is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
