Blackhawks' Shaw out for Game 6

Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw will not play against the Minnesota Wild in Game 6 of their Western Conference second-round series Tuesday due to a lower-body injury, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said on Monday.

Shaw will miss his fifth consecutive game due to the injury. Quenneville said Shaw is considered day-to-day and is expected to begin skating again in the next few days.

Ducks take 3-2 series lead, -300 series price

The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Los Angeles Kings by a score of 4-3 Monday night, taking a 3-2 series lead back to Staples Center for Wednesday's Game 6. Series prices have been adjusted and the Ducks are now -300 faves to eliminate the Kings in this Western Conference semifinal.

The Kings are currently +250 dogs to win the series and have already proven they can battle back from a deficit after spotting the San Jose Sharks a three-game lead in their opening round matchup, before winning the next four games.

Game 7 - Rangers at Penguins

May 12, 2014

The Penguins and Rangers will meet in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Tuesday from the Consol Energy Center in Western Pennsylvania.

Oddsmakers have installed the Penguins as minus-160 (Bet $100 to win $62.50) for Game 7 while the Rangers are 7/5 underdogs (Bet $100 to win $140).

Unfortunately for Rangers fans, history isn’t on their side. New York is 0-4 all-time against Pittsburgh in the playoffs plus the team has never been able to win a series after facing a 3-1 deficit.

Most would believe playing at home in a Game 7 will benefit Pittsburgh and it should. There have been 149 Game 7’s in the NHL Playoffs and the home squad owns a 94-55 (63%) record.

While those angles favor the Penguins, there are some current trends that back the Rangers.

Overall, New York is 6-5 in Game 7’s while Pittsburgh is 13-6.

However, the Rangers have gone 6-1 in their last seven Game 7’s and that already includes a victory in a decisive battle this season.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has dropped its last two Game 7’s and one of them came at home.

Listed below are past games and trends to watch for Tuesday’s Game 7 between the Rangers and Penguins:

Game of the Day: Canadiens at Bruins
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Boston Bruins (-173, 5)

The Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins have been before - with the last time being three years ago. The Original Six rivals will compete in a Game 7 on Wednesday for the ninth time in history as the Canadiens and host Bruins decide their Eastern Conference second-round series. Carey Price recorded his fourth postseason shutout against Boston on Monday, turning aside all 26 shots he faced as Montreal staved off elimination by cruising to a 4-0 triumph in Game 6.

Reigning Norris Trophy winner P.K. Subban didn't score in that contest, but he did tally with 1:57 to play in the teams' last Game 7 meeting - on April 27, 2011. The then-rookie defenseman tied the contest before Nathan Horton beat Price 5:43 into overtime as the Bruins began a surge that culminated in a Stanley Cup title. "It's going to be great," Subban said of Wednesday's winner-take-all game. "I can't wait for the crowd, the noise, the energy in the building. I can't wait to take that all away from them."

TV:
7 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

LINE HISTORY:
Pinnacle Sports opened the Bruins as -183 home faves, but that has been bet down to -173. The total has opened at 5.

INJURY REPORT:
Canadiens: C Alex Galchenyuk (Questionable, knee). Bruins: D Dennis Seidenberg (Out indefinitely, knee), C Chris Kelly (Out indefinitely, back).

ABOUT THE CANADIENS:
Thomas Vanek has proven himself to be a thorn in the side of the Bruins - and this series has been no exception. The 30-year-old Austrian scored twice on Monday to double his goal total for the series and has tallied 34 times in 61 career games versus Boston. Max Pacioretty (one goal, three assists in the series) admitted that he was getting outplayed by Boston captain Zdeno Chara in the set's first four contests, but the Connecticut native chimed in with a goal and an assist in Game 6.

ABOUT THE BRUINS:
David Krejci led Presidents' Trophy-winning Boston in the regular season with 69 points, but has just one (an assist in Game 2) in the series and three in the postseason. Despite his struggles, the Czech Olympian remains optimistic that he and fellow struggling linemate Milan Lucic (one goal, two assists in the series) will get it in gear. "Yeah, we had some good looks out there," Krejci said. "They didn't go in for us, but we're going to stay positive in here."

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings in Boston.
* Canadiens are 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Boston.
* Bruins are 11-4 in their last 15 Conference Semifinals games.
* Bruins are 1-4 in their last five Wednesday games.

CONSENSUS:
75 percent of wagers are coming in on the Bruins.

Ducks at Kings: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at Los Angeles Kings (-137, 5)

If their first-round series was any indication, the Los Angeles Kings have the Anaheim Ducks right where they want them. Los Angeles attempts to stave off elimination and even its Western Conference second-round matchup when it hosts Anaheim for Game 6 on Wednesday. The Kings lost their first three games against San Jose in the opening round before staging an historic rally to win the series, becoming the fourth team in NHL history to accomplish the feat.

Los Angeles continued to surge, winning the first two games of this set in Anaheim. The Pacific Division-champion Ducks returned the favor with two victories at Staples Center before posting a 4-3 triumph on Monday to again push the Kings to the brink. Devante Smith-Pelly snapped a tie by tallying twice in an 83-second span early in the second period and rookie John Gibson made 39 saves as Anaheim withstood a comeback attempt to hand the Kings their second three-game losing streak of the postseason.

TV:
9:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

ABOUT THE DUCKS:
The two-goal performance was the second of the playoffs for Smith-Pelly, who also scored a pair - including the tying tally with 24 seconds left in the third period - in Anaheim's series-clinching overtime victory against Dallas in Game 6 of their first-round matchup. Gibson proved to be human in Game 5 by allowing three goals but improved to a combined 5-0-0 with two shutouts, a 1.40 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage in three NHL regular-season games and a pair of playoff contests.

ABOUT THE KINGS:
Regardless of the outcome of the series, Los Angeles' acquisition of Marian Gaborik at the trade deadline has been a superb one. The Slovakian registered 16 points in 19 regular-season games before turning it up a notch in the playoffs with 12 points in as many contests. Gaborik has registered three two-goal performances - including one in Game 5 - and leads the league with eight tallies.

TRENDS:

* Ducks are 5-0 in the last five meetings in Los Angeles.
* Under is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Los Angeles.
* Ducks are 25-9 in their last 34 vs. Pacific.
* Kings are 5-2 in their last seven games playing on 1 days rest.

OVERTIME:

1. The Ducks have won three straight playoff games for the first time since 2007, when they captured five in a row against Detroit (three) and Ottawa en route to their Stanley Cup championship.

2. Los Angeles D Willie Mitchell, who has missed six games with an undisclosed injury, skated on Tuesday but is doubtful for Game 6.

3. Smith-Pelly leads Anaheim with five goals but has yet to record an assist in the playoffs.

Preview: Canadiens (46-28) at Bruins (54-19)

Date: May 14, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

BOSTON (AP) - The Bruins crowd has been hostile to Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban, booing him every time he touches the puck.

And he can't wait to get back to Boston.

'That's what playoffs is all about, man,' Subban said after the Canadiens won Game 6 to force the series back to Boston's TD Garden for a decisive seventh game. 'I hope their crowd is louder. ... I hope it gets nasty, I hope it gets dirty.'

The Bruins and Canadiens will play on Wednesday night in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference semifinal, with the winner moving just one step from the Stanley Cup finals. It is the ninth time the two Original Six rivals have met in a seventh game, with the Bruins taking the most recent one in 2011.

Boston played two more Game 7s that year on their way to the NHL championship. The Bruins also went to seven games in a playoff series the next year, and again the year after that.

Montreal hasn't been back to a deciding game since its first-round loss to Boston in `11.

'We've been through those many times,' Bruins coach Claude Julien said. 'You hope that your experience is going to help you get through those.'

The Bruins led the series 3-2 before Montreal won 4-0 in Game 6 to stave off elimination at the Bell Centre. But to advance to the conference finals for just the second time since 1993, the Canadiens are going to have to win in Boston.

Subban isn't expecting the reception to be any different than in the first three games at the TD Garden, where Montreal won Game 1. Subban had two goals in the opener- including the game-winner in the second overtime - leading to racist messages on Twitter that both the Bruins and Boston's mayor condemned.

Subban also scored in Game 5 in Boston.

'It's going to be great,' he told reporters after the Game 6 victory. 'I can't wait for the crowd, the noise, the energy in the building. I can't wait to take that all away from them.'

The Bruins and Canadiens have met in the playoffs 34 times since 1929, with Montreal winning 24 of the previous 33 series. The Bruins have won seven of the past 11, and two in a row.

The teams have met eight previous times in a Game 7, with Montreal winning five.

It's been a while since the Canadiens have had to play in a winner-take-all game, but the Bruins know that experience won't help if they don't play better than they did on Monday.

'That can only take you so far,' forward Daniel Paille said. 'It's OK ... but you don't want to count on it.'

  • Preview: Ducks (54-20) at Kings (46-28)

    Date: May 14, 2014 9:30 PM EDT

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) - The Los Angeles Kings are facing their fifth playoff elimination game of the spring.

Given the way Los Angeles handled this situation four times in the previous round, the Anaheim Ducks are understandably wary.

'I love those opportunities,' Kings defenseman Drew Doughty said Tuesday. 'I love the pressure. I know going into those games I'm going to be counted upon. Because we're comfortable in that situation, we know exactly how desperate we have to play.'

After three consecutive wins in the first Freeway Faceoff postseason series, the Ducks are one victory away from their first trip to the Western Conference finals since their only Stanley Cup season in 2007.

But the Ducks realize the Kings have a Stanley Cup pedigree and an uncommon postseason resilience.

After winning four consecutive games to escape an 0-3 hole in the first round against San Jose, they only need to win Game 6 at Staples Center - where the Ducks won twice earlier in the series - to force a seventh game back in Anaheim.

'They've got so much pride and championship blood that it's just going to take a perfect game,' Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said.

'I would still venture to guess that people are still thinking that they're the favorites to win the series because of what they've done in the past.'

The Kings never even faced an elimination game during their 16-4 rampage to their only Stanley Cup title in 2012.

In the two seasons since, they've twice rallied out of 0-2 deficits in the first round and won five potential elimination games overall, losing only to Chicago in last summer's conference finals.

The Kings seem unshakably confident they can snap a three-game skid with a complete defensive effort in front of Jonathan Quick, who has been bested by Anaheim rookie goalie John Gibson in two straight outings.

Gibson has stopped 67 of 70 shots while winning his first two NHL playoff games, and he still hasn't lost in the big leagues after going 3-0 late in the Ducks' regular season.

'We know we can beat him,' Doughty said. 'We know he's a very good goalie. At the same time, we haven't done everything we can. As good as he is, he's not impossible to beat. I'd take Quickie over him any day still.'

Before they took a bus up the I-5 freeway to spend another night in downtown Los Angeles, the Ducks prepared for a defining moment of their season with both excitement and trepidation.

The Ducks clinched their last playoff series on the road in Game 6, but the experience didn't exactly fill them with confidence.

Anaheim started poorly at Dallas and fell behind by two goals, only to finish off the Stars with two late regulation goals and an overtime winner.

'In the first round, we're very conscious of what happened for them and for us,' Ducks defenseman Ben Lovejoy said. '(Game 6 in Dallas) was a miraculous comeback. We probably didn't deserve to win that game. ... We're all desperate. We all want to get there.'

The Ducks also will draw from last season's playoff run, when they took a 3-2 series lead on Detroit and failed in two chances to close it out, losing Game 6 on the road.

'All the great teams, they have to go through some tough times together,' Teemu Selanne said. 'Last year was so disappointing. We really want to remember that, now that we've got ourselves in a pretty good position.'

The Kings already excavated themselves from one bad position in this postseason with a six-game winning streak that ended in Game 3. Los Angeles has been dominant and dismal in alternating stretches for much of this season, but always seemed to recover its mojo when it really mattered.

To even the series, the Kings likely must generate offense from somebody besides Marian Gaborik, whose NHL-best eight playoff goals are double the total of any teammate.

Los Angeles has 11 goals in five games in the series, including just five in its three straight losses.

Doughty, captain Dustin Brown, Justin Williams, Jarret Stoll and NHL playoff scoring leader Anze Kopitar haven't scored a goal against the Ducks, while Jeff Carter has just one.

'We knew this series was going to be tight,' said Gaborik, who has five goals in the series. 'We just have to win tomorrow. We haven't played our best hockey, and I'm sure we're going to lay everything out there. It is a grind, but that's the whole playoffs.'

Game of the Day: Kings at Ducks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Anaheim Ducks (-116, 5)

Southern California fans couldn't ask for a better way for the first-ever Stanley Cup playoff series between the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks to culminate. With a trip to the Western Conference final on the line, the Pacific Division-champion Ducks host the rival Kings in Game 7 of their second-round matchup on Friday. Fresh off its historic comeback against San Jose in the opening round, Los Angeles kept rolling by winning the first two games of this set on the road before dropping the next three contests.

Anaheim jumped into the driver's seat thanks in part to rookie sensation John Gibson, who posted a shutout in his postseason debut to even the series before improving to 5-0-0 (regular season included) during his brief time in the NHL with another strong effort in Game 5. Los Angeles drew from recent experience and staved off elimination Wednesday by recording a 2-1 triumph at home. Defenseman Jake Muzzin and Trevor Lewis scored while Jonathan Quick made 10 of his 21 saves in the third period, including several during a frenzied comeback attempt by the Ducks during the final minutes of the session.

TV:
9 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

LINE HISTORY:
Pinnacle Sports opened the Ducks as -113 home faves with a total of 5.

INJURY REPORT:
Kings - D Willie Mitchell (Questionable, hand), D Robyn Regehr (Questionable, upper body). Ducks - RW Tim Jackman (Questionable, hand), G Frederick Andersen (Questionable, lower body).

ABOUT THE KINGS:
Los Angeles likely wouldn't be one victory away from the conference final without the tremendous play of Anze Kopitar. The 26-year-old Slovenian has registered at least one point in all but one of the Kings' 13 playoff games and leads the league in postseason scoring with 17 points. Kopitar made a nifty cross-slot backhand pass to set up Muzzin's goal on Wednesday and was very efficient in the faceoff circles, winning 15 of his 23 draws.

ABOUT THE DUCKS:
Captain Ryan Getzlaf has been producing against the Kings, collecting a goal and six assists, but Anaheim needs more from Corey Perry. The former Hart Trophy winner has registered only a tally and two assists versus Los Angeles after recording two tallies and five assists against Dallas in the first round. Anaheim dropped from first overall to sixth in playoff power-play efficiency, failing on all five opportunities in Game 6 to fall to 25.5 percent (12-for-47).

TRENDS:

* Under is 7-2-3 in the last 12 meetings.
* Kings are 7-3 in their last 10 vs. Pacific.
* Road team is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.
* Over is 4-1 in Ducks last five Friday games.

CONSENSUS:
65 percent of Covers Consensus wagers are on the Ducks.

Three big betting trends for the NHL playoffs conference finals
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only four teams remain in the quest for the Stanley Cup championship - and bettors will want to pay attention to certain trends that have highlighted conference finals in recent years.

Here are three trends betters should be on the lookout for as the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks face off for a spot in the Stanley Cup final:

Under a (Slightly) Stronger Play

Despite oddsmakers making adjustments to account for the greater emphasis on defense, teams have still trended Under of late. While clubs are 18-19-4 O/U in conference finals over the past four years, three of the previous four series have favored the Under; only last year's Chicago-Los Angeles series (2-2-1 O/U) did not. Expect low totals this year, with three of the four finalists ranked in the bottom half in regular-season offense and all four in the top 12 in goals against.

Comebacks (Slightly) More Common

Teams that scored first in the regular season prevailed roughly 69.5 percent of the time. That number dips slightly when looking at the previous four conference finals, with teams that hit the scoresheet first winning 68.2 percent of those games. Recent comebacks have been more prevalent in the Western Conference; the teams scoring first are just 6-4 over the past two conference finals, compared to a 10-0 mark for Eastern Conference teams that score first.

Power Outages Expected

Don't expect to see many power-play goals in either conference championship series. Last year saw just three power-play goals scored in the nine conference final games; there were 11 the season before, but those came in 95 combined opportunities. Aside from the Vancouver-San Jose outlier series in 2010-11 - in which the teams combined for a mind-boggling 16 man-advantage goals in their five-game showdown - no other series since 2010 has had more than eight.
