Three big betting trends for the second round of the NHL playoffs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the pool of 16 postseason teams now whittled down to eight, bettors will be looking for any trend they can take advantage of heading into the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Taking a look at some of the recent second-round results, here are some patterns that have emerged as we prepare to kick off the round of eight:

Under Takes Over

Most fans will acknowledge that goal scoring generally begins to dry up as the Stanley Cup tournament reaches the second round, and totals are often adjusted to reflect the increased reliance on defense and aversion to risk-taking. Yet, aside from a bizarre stretch during the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs, Under bettors have reaped the benefits in the round of eight. The 2011 second round finished 11-9-1 O/U, thanks in large part to a 9-0-1 outlier from May 3-8. But 2012 saw that number drop to 7-11-3 O/U. The Under trend was even more pronounced last season, as teams went 7-13-4 O/U in Round 2.

Home Ownership

Betting on home favorites in the Stanley Cup playoffs is often a risky proposition. They usually don't pay out well and with the league trending toward greater parity, it's a major gamble. Despite the perceived increase in balance between teams, second-round home faves have steadily become more dominant over the years. Home favorites have improved from a modest 9-8 record in 2011 to an 11-7 mark in 2012 and an eye-popping 17-2 last season. It will be interesting to see if this particular trend continues into 2014, or if last year was an exception.

Penalty Killing the Key

While the number of power plays per game doesn't drop significantly from Rounds 1 to 2, what teams do with their opportunities plays a major role in whether they advance to the conference finals. Over the past three postseasons, no team has reached the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with less than an 84.2-percent penalty-killing success rate in Round 2. Furthermore, the combined penalty-kill percentage of all 12 second-round teams to reach the conference finals in the past three years - 88.3 percent - would have ranked first in the NHL during the 2013-14 regular season.

Bryzgalov likely to start Game 1 for Wild

Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Thursday night that Bryzgalov is likely to start, with John Curry serving as his backup. Bryzgalov replaced Darcy Kuemper with 8:13 remaining in the third period of the Wild's 5-4 overtime victory in Game 7 against the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday. Kuemper couldn't continue after sustaining an undisclosed injury.

Bryzgalov made one save in 13:15 of action before Nino Niederreiter's goal won the game at 5:02 of overtime.

Bryzgalov is 1-2 with a 4.25 goals-against average and .826 save percentage in three games. Kuemper is 3-1 with a 2.03 GAA and .913 save percentage. Niklas Backstrom and Josh Harding, the goaltending tandem at the start of the season, are out with injuries. Curry made two appearances, including one start, during a late-season recall.

History on the Habs' side after Game 1 win

When the Montreal Canadiens scored the Game 1 winner in double overtime against the Boston Bruins Thursday night, they joined an exclusive list of teams.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, after the Habs' Game 1 on the road, their chances to win the series and advance in the Stanly Cup Playoffs got a lot better. If history is any indication that is.

Canadiens are 15th team in NHL history to win multi-OT series opener on the road. Twelve of the previous 14 teams to do so won the series.

The Canadiens are currently -105 to win the series.

Subban targeted by thousands of racist tweets

Racist comments proliferated on social media networks Thursday after Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban scored the winning goal in a double-overtime match against the Boston Bruins. On Twitter, unhappy Bruins fans tweeted comments like "That stupid n----r doesn’t belong in hockey #whitesonly" and "Someone needs to smack PK subban across his big n----r lips.

Bruins Issue Statement

Bruins President Cam Neely issued the following statement: "The racist, classless views expressed by an ignorant group of individuals following Thursday's game via digital media are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization."

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Doc Rivers makes $7M a year to coach the Clippers; he earned every penny this week, keeping a fractured franchise pasted together.

-- Vince Neil of Motley Crue is part-owner of the Jacksonville Sharks of Arena Football; Jon Bon Jovi and Gene Simmons also own AFL teams.

-- NFL should move its draft around the country, just like the NHL does.

-- California Chrome is first California-bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby since all the way back in 1962. Big day for California racing.

-- Since 2003, under is 28-16-1 in 7th game of an NBA playoff series.

-- Next article I read about the NFL Draft will be about a trade or a draft pick; I'm seriously tired of all the speculation. Enough already.

*****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) I miscounted the bowls earlier this week; there will be 38 bowls, plus the new national title game, meaning 76 of 125 eligible teams will go bowling. UNLV, Penn State and Idaho are ineligible for bowl games this coming season.

12) Maryland’s basketball team has five freshmen coming in this fall, but they’ve also lost four transfers since last season ended, as they venture into the Big 14 for the first time. I still wonder if coach Mark Turgeon would’ve left Texas A&M for Maryland had he known the Terps were bolting the ACC.

11) If I was making out a major league lineup card, I’d always want my three best hitters batting 1-3, since they get the most at-bats, especially in the AL, where a position player bats ninth. Not fond of putting a lesser hitter at #2, so he can get better pitches to hit, hitting in front of the best hitter, who usually hits third. Stat mavens are arguing the best hitter should bat second. As long as the best guy bats in the first inning, to put immediate pressure on the pitcher, I’m good with that.

10) Tampa Bay starting pitchers lasted past the 6th inning twice in their last 19 games, which if it continues, will burn their bullpen out before football season starts. Grant Balfour has already thrown two innings in two games, which he never did in Oakland.

9) If I lived in Chicago, I’d be at Wrigley Field for every Friday afternoon home game; what better way to start the weekend?

8) Met starting pitchers should definitely bat ninth; they’re 0-47 this season, the worst hitting start of a season by any pitching staff since 1900.

7) In their long history, the Hawks are now 0-9 in Game 7’s that were played on the road; Atlanta was only sixth #8 seed ever to get to a Game 7, but that doesn't mean much if you don't win that seventh game

6) Lakers leaked an odd set of names as coaching possibilities; Thibodeau, Calipari, Kevin Ollie. I’m thinking Thibodeau isn’t Showtime-enough for the LA crowd. The basketball scene in LA is chaotic, with the Clippers’ mess and the Lakers in transition.

5) I'm not in favor of the Warriors firing Mark Jackson, but if they do, and all the TV types seem to think they will, how about Mike D’Antoni moving to Oakland while Jackson replaces Steve Kerr at TNT? That makes some sense; D’Antoni’s system with Curry/Thompson would be excellent.

4) Vendors at the Kentucky Derby are charging $8 for a Bud Light. One beer, not a six-pack. Sounds like the prices at Saratoga here in the summer.

3) Kansas PG Naadir Tharpe is transferring, with one year left to play, which leads us to…….

2) Kansas signing point guard recruit Ahmaad Rorie to take Tharpe’s place. Guess Mr Tharpe didn’t want to spend his senior year sharing the position with a freshman.

1) Read an article about how Doc Rivers had to spend a morning this week with non-basketball employees of the Clippers (salespeople, administrative staff), who were distraught and angry by events that were taking money out of their pockets, as lot of those sales people probably work at least partly on commission.

Hopefully the NBA can rid itself of Donald Sterling soon, and a franchise that has finally come of the NBA's best teams can provide a positive experience for fans.

Quick story you may already know: 10-12 years ago, a Clippers' assistant coach named Kim Hughes (he works for Portland now) had prostate cancer. Sterling would not pay for his medical coverage, saying, "If I do it for you, I have to do it for everyone." Four Clipper players chipped in to pay the $70,000 tab.

Penguins-Rangers have yet to go under this year

The Pittsburgh Penguins are the top over team in the NHL playoffs through the first round, going 5-1 in their series against the Blue Jackets. Expect more over plays when they battle the New York Rangers.

When the Pens and Rangers meet this season the teams have gone over in four of their five games, the lone push coming in Game 1 of their series. The totals have been close however, averaging 6 goals per game.

The total for Game 2 opened at 5.

United Center home to goals between 'Hawks-Wild

The Chicago Blackhawks are heavily favored to beat the Minnesota Wild leaving little room for bettors to find value, but the total has been trending.

In the last five games at the United Center in Chicago, the teams have an O/U record of 4-0-1 and have averaged 6.6 goals per game. To specify, the Blackhawks have averaged 4.2 gpg and the Wild 2.4 gpg during that span.

The 'Hawks and Wild enter Game 2 of their series with a total of 5.

Second Round Cheat Sheet

May 1, 2014

Key:
A – Atlantic
M – Metropolitan
C – Central
P – Pacific
W – Wild Card

Eastern Conference

1A Boston vs. 2A Montreal

Bruins: 54-18-9, 117 points
Canadiens: 46-28-8, 100 points

Season series: The Habs took three of four meetings from their division rivals, including both matchups at TD Garden. In all three losses, the Bruins were limited to one goal, while Boston has lost six of its last seven meetings to Montreal since March 2013.

Previous playoff outcome: Montreal swept Tampa Bay in the opening round, while scoring at least four goals in three of those victories. After losing the series opener to Detroit, the Bruins rolled off four consecutive wins to advance to the second round for the fifth time in six seasons. The last time these Original Six rivals hooked up in the postseason, the Bruins outlasted the Canadiens in seven games of the opening round of the 2011 playoffs.

1M Pittsburgh vs. 2M N.Y. Rangers

Penguins: 51-24-6, 108 points
Rangers: 45-31-6, 96 points

Season series: The two teams split four regular season meetings, while two games finished in the shootout (each team won once). All four contests finished ‘over’ the total, while both the Pens and Rangers each won a game at home and on the road.

Previous playoff outcome: The Rangers alternated wins and losses with the Flyers, but found a way to advance in seven games. The Penguins and Blue Jackets played five games decided by a goal (all coincidentally 4-3), but Pittsburgh finished off Columbus in six games. Pittsburgh eliminated New York in five games of the second round in the 2008 playoffs, as the Pens ultimately lost to the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Western Conference

3C Chicago vs. 1W Minnesota

Blackhawks: 46-21-15, 107 points
Wild: 43-26-12, 98 points

Season series: The surprising Wild grabbed three of five matchups against the Blackhawks, including a pair of victories at Xcel Energy Center. The first three meetings finished ‘over’ the total, while the final contest was decided in a shootout, won by the Blackhawks at the United Center in early April.

Previous playoff outcome: Both these clubs overcame 2-0 deficits in the opening round, as the Wild rallied past the Avalanche in seven games, winning the finale in overtime on the road. Chicago climbed out of a 2-0 hole against St. Louis to claim the final four games, while scoring 12 goals in the last three wins. The Blackhawks knocked out the Wild in the opening round of last season’s playoffs in five games, with three of those victories coming by at least three goals.

1P Anaheim vs. 3W Los Angeles

Ducks: 53-20-8, 114 points
Kings: 46-28-8, 100 points

Season series: The Ducks owned their cross-city rivals, winning the last four meetings after losing the first matchup in the shootout. Anaheim won each of the three games as a visitor, including the outdoor contest at Dodger Stadium in late January.

Previous playoff outcome: Los Angeles salvaged its season after falling behind San Jose, 3-0, as the Kings stole the final four games to eliminate their division rivals in seven games. Anaheim owned its home-ice with three victories at home against Dallas, while staving off the Stars in six games. This is the first time these two Southern California teams have met in the playoffs in franchise history.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Monday, May 5

Rangers are playing fifth game in seven nights; they're been outshot 63-36 in last 5+ periods, since they led 2-0 after first period of Game 1. NY is 3-3 vs Penguins this year, after Pitt won eight of previous nine games in series. Over is 4-1-1 in series games this season. Penguins won five of last seven visits here. Rangers haven't scored on power play since Game 2 of Philly series, 0 for last 29. Pittsburgh is 28-16 on road this year; their last three road games all went over the total-- this is their first back/back since April 13.

Anaheim won four of last five games with LA, but lost 3-2 in OT in Game 1, with LA tying game with 0:07 left in regulation; under is 4-1-2 in last seven series games, but 0-3-1 in Ducks' last four games overall. Anaheim is 33-12 at home this season. Kings won last five games; over is 5-1-2 in their last eight games, with Kings allowing only seven goals in last five games. LA lost three of last five visits here; four of last eight series games went to OT. While games are on road, Kings obviously aren't flying, travel is easier, home ice edge a little less.

League-wide, over is 32-12-11 in the playoffs, 3-1-3 in this round.

Kings at Ducks: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Anaheim Ducks (-130, 5)

After Marian Gaborik provided quite the detour in the opener, the Freeway Faceoff continues on Monday as the host Anaheim Ducks look to even their Western Conference second-round series with the Los Angeles Kings at one game apiece. Anaheim was poised to take Game 1 before Gaborik scored the tying goal with seven seconds remaining in the third period and netted the winning tally 12:07 into overtime in Los Angeles' 3-2 triumph on Saturday. The Slovak is tied with Colorado's Paul Stastny and Chicago's Patrick Kane and Bryan Bickell with an NHL-leading five tallies this postseason.

While the Kings matched the Blackhawks with current five-game winning streaks, Pacific Division-champion Anaheim was left to sort through the emotions of a crushing defeat. "Well, you know, you get scored on with seven seconds to go, it's a tough one to swallow," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. Jonas Hiller was victimized on the late tally but was strong in net with 33 saves while making his first start in nearly a month.

TV:
10 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

ABOUT THE KINGS:
Anze Kopitar has been the model of consistency in the playoffs, recording at least one point in all eight of the team's games and 10 straight dating back to the regular season. The Slovenian leads the NHL with 13 points (four goals, nine assists) and has 42 over the last three playoffs. Drew Doughty has eight points (one goal, seven assists) in as many games and logged a game-high 33:06 of ice time after fellow defenseman Robyn Regehr exited the series opener in the first period following a hit against the end boards by Anaheim veteran Teemu Selanne.

ABOUT THE DUCKS:
The 43-year-old Selanne became the third-oldest player in league history to score a postseason goal, "trailing" Hall-of-Famers Gordie Howe (52, 1980) and Chris Chelios (45, 2007). The tally was the first of the playoffs for the Finnish Flash, who is expected to retire at the end of the postseason. Captain Ryan Getzlaf, who set up both of Anaheim's goals in Game 1, has registered a team-leading six assists and nine points.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-1-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Road team is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
* Kings are 5-0 in their last five overall.
* Ducks are 1-4 in their last five Conference Semifinals games.

OVERTIME:

1. Los Angeles has scored a power-play goal in each of its last six games (7-for-24) and killed all 19 short-handed situations in the last four contests.

2. Anaheim RW Corey Perry registered two shots on goal in Game 1, with his best chance at a wide-open net being thwarted by Kings D Alec Martinez early in overtime.

3. Los Angeles' next playoff win will be the 100th in franchise history.
