CFL
Armadillo's Write-Up

Week 11

Home (18-18). Favorites (14-22), Over (18-18). West 11-7 vs East.

Same four matchups this weekend as last, just different home fields.........

Calgary (5-4) @ Edmonton (5-4)-- Stampeders beat Eskimos 31-30 at home last week, as Edmonton missed FG on their last drive; third win in last four games for Calgary, which is +5 in turnovers in last four games, after being -6 in its first five contests. Calgary won its last two home games; underdogs covered all four of their home games. Edmonton is 3-1 at home; they're 3-0 vs spread this season in game following a loss. Four of last five Calgary games stayed under total; three of last four Edmonton games went over.

Hamilton (3-6) @ Toronto (5-4)-- Argonauts (+3.5) won 33-30 at Hamilton last week, avenging 36-27 loss from earlier in year; it was fifth game in a row Hamilton allowed 20+ points in second half, outscored 95-41 in last four, all losses. TiCats are 1-3 on road, 2-1 as road dogs, losing by 3-7-12 points. Underdogs covered three of four Toronto home games, with Argos losing last two; they're 5-1 when scoring 20+ points, 0-3 when they score less. Five of last six Toronto games stayed under total; seven of nine Hamilton games went over.

Montreal (6-3) @ BCLions (6-3)-- Alouettes snapped BC's four-game win streak with 30-25 win last week, despite gaining only 383 yards, their lowest output in last six games. Montreal won its last four games- they're 6-0 when they scored 30+ points, 0-3 when they don't. Lions won three of four home games, allowing average of 21 ppg in its home games. Alouettes won last two away games, at Winnipeg and Edmonton, after losing their first two. Six of last eight Montreal games went over total; six of Lions' last seven games went under.

Saslatchewan (4-5) @ Winnipeg (2-7)-- Coaching chamge didn't exactly help in last week's 52-0 loss in Regina; Riders outrushed them 175-46, outgained them 441-142 and had three takeaways (+3), but win snapped 5-game Saskatchewan skid, so not like Riders are having smooth sailing either. Bombers are 3-7 vs spread this season but respectable 2-2 at home, with losses by 10-3 points. Winnipeg was outscored 69-10 in first half of their last four games. Four of last six Roughrider games, three of last four Winnipeg games went over the total.

FRIDAY

Calgary Stampeders at Edmonton Eskimos (-2.5, 49.5)

The Battle of Alberta is working overtime with the Stamps and Eskimos meeting for the second time this week following the Labour Day Classic Monday. While Calgary and Edmonton have traded blows, splitting the last six meetings 3-3 SU, the Eskimos have come through against the spread in four of those contests.

Can Edmonton cash in again as a slight home favorite? That may depend on who it goes with under center. The Eskimos will likely hand the ball to Kerry Joseph again with starter Steven Jyles nursing a nagging calf injury. Joseph passed for 311 yards, two touchdowns and an INT – as well as a rushing TD – in a 31-30 loss to Calgary on Monday.

TRENDS AND NOTES

* Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Edmonton.
* Stampeders are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.
* Stampeders are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games in Week 11.
* Eskimos are 0-6 ATS in their last six games in Week 11.

SATURDAY

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Toronto Argonauts (-2.5, 52.5)

Hamilton (3-6) held a 22-11 lead over Toronto heading into the fourth quarter Monday, but the wheels fell off and the Argonauts pulled out a 33-30 victory to hand the Ticats a fourth straight loss. Chris Williams set a CFL record with his sixth kick-return TD of the season in a losing cause.

Quarterback Ricky Ray threw for 375 yards and Chad Owens racked up 402 all-purpose yards in the Argonauts’ comeback effort. Owens finished with 11 catches for 176 yards and was a beast on special teams for the Argos, who improved to 5-4 on the campaign.

TRENDS AND NOTES

*Toronto is 5-12 ATS in their last 17 home games.
*Under is 20-6 in the last 26 meetings in Toronto.
*Tiger-Cats are 4-0 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
*Hamilton pivot Henry Burris has thrown 22 INTs and only 20 TDs in his last 17 games versus Toronto.

Montreal Alouettes at B.C. Lions (-4.5, 51.5)

The Montreal Alouettes (6-3) pulled out a 30-25 victory over the Lions to sit alone atop the East standings. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo set a new CFL record with his eighth straight 300-yard passing performance to snap the Lions’ four-game winning streak.

The Leos (6-3) are still top dogs in the West despite last week’s loss and get a shot at redemption on home turf. Travis Lulay threw for 275 yards and a couple of TDs that found the paws of Arland Bruce, who hauled in a season-high six passes for 76 yards in the loss.

TRENDS AND NOTES

*Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in BC.
*Alouettes are 1-6 ATS in their last seven meetings in BC.
*Under is 6-0 in Lions last six games following a S.U. loss.
*Alouettes are 0-4 ATS in their last four Saturday games.
*The Als have taken two of the last three meetings with British Columbia and four of the last six overall.

SUNDAY

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3.5, 49.5)

The Roughriders (4-5) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 52-0 spanking of the Blue Bombers last week. The Riders will certainly have momentum on their side for this week's rematch after posting the largest shutout in team history. Kory Sheets ran for a season-best 106 yards, becoming the first Saskatchewan rusher to hit the 100-yard mark in a game since 2010.

Joey Elliott and Alex Brink combined for 96 yards passing and an interception in the lopsided loss. Winnipeg QBs rank last in the league in passing accuracy at 57 percent and second-to-last in total passing yards (2,321). The Bombers' offense is averaging a league-low 19.6 points per game, a huge reason why they're the bottom dwellers in the CFL standings.

TRENDS AND NOTES

*Roughriders are 6-0 ATS in their last six games following a S.U. win.
*Saskatchewan is 1-4 ATS in its last five games overall.
*Blue Bombers are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.
*Saskatchewan has won three straight over Winnipeg and eight of the last nine.

CFL

Week 12

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Bacon: Week 12 CFL betting preview
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With only eight weeks remaining on the CFL schedule, the playoff picture is beginning to take shape. Here are a few tidbits on the Week 12 matchups:

FRIDAY

Winnipeg at Calgary (-9.5, 52.5)

The Calgary Stampeders (6-4) try to extend their win streak to four when they host the slumping Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-8) at McMahon Stadium on Friday. Stampeders RB Jon Cornish ran for a career-best 185 yards on 16 carries to lead Calgary over Edmonton last week and the Bombers dropped their third straight contest with a narrow 25-24 defeat at the hands of Saskatchewan in Week 11.

Trends
* Blue Bombers are 4-0-2 ATS in their last six meetings.
* Under is 5-1 in Stampeders’ last six games overall.
* Stampeders are 0-4 ATS in their last four home games.

SATURDAY

Edmonton at Hamilton (-3, 54)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-7) will try to halt a five-game losing skid when they host the Edmonton Eskimos (5-5) on Saturday. The Hamilton defense ranks dead last in the league in total yards allowed, passing yards allowed, rushing yards allowed and points allowed, a major reason why the over is 8-2 in Ticats games this season.

Trends
* Hamilton is 8-2 O/U this season
* Tiger-Cats are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
* Eskimos are 5-1 ATS in their last six Saturday games.

Toronto at BC (-7, 46.5)

Two of the top teams in the league square off at B.C. Place this weekend, as the British Columbia Lions (7-3) entertain the Toronto Argonauts (6-4). The Lions are coming off a convincing victory over Montreal, marking the club’s fifth win in the last six games. B.C. has won four straight and 14 of its last 15 games over the Argos. Toronto beat up on Hamilton the past two weeks to post back-to-back victories.

Trends
* Argonauts are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings.
* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in B.C.
* Lions are 7-2 ATS in their last nine home games.

SUNDAY

Saskatchewan at Montreal (-6, 53.5)

The Montreal Alouettes (6-4) look to get back to their winning ways when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-5) on Sunday. Als QB Anthony Calvillo had his lowest passing total of the season in last week’s loss to B.C., completing only 16 attempts for 152 yards and a score. The Roughriders have posted back-to-back victories but also have issues at QB. Backup quarterback Drew Willy helped Saskatchewan slip past lowly Winnipeg 25-24 last week in relief of Darian Durant. The first-string signal-caller suffered a hip flexor injury early in the contest and may be sidelined against the Alouettes.

Trends
* Roughriders are 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings in Montreal.
* Under is 13-2-1 in the last 16 meetings in Montreal.
* Alouettes are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.

USC at Stanford College Football Betting Preview

Date: 9/15/2012 at 7:30 p.m. (ET)

Opening Lines: USC -9, O/U 60

USC Trojans: This is a huge revenge game for the Trojans (2-0 straight up, 0-2 against the spread), who lost three straight games to Stanford with NFL top overall pick Andrew Luck under center for the Cardinal. USC is just 1-4 ATS in the past five meetings since winning 42-0 in Palo Alto back in 2006 with the ‘over’ cashing in the last four overall. However, the Trojans have not been very impressive in their first two games this season despite the fact that star QB Matt Barkley returned for his senior year. They are coming off a 42-29 win over Syracuse last Saturday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey with Barkley throwing six touchdown passes but just 187 yards through the air.

Stanford Cardinal: The Cardinal (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) survived a 20-17 scare from San Jose State in their season opener but rebounded to rout Duke 50-13 last week. They will be playing their third home game in row before heading to Washington in two weeks when they will begin a stretch of three road games in a month. Stanford will likely rely on its strong running game again in this year’s meeting with USC, as senior RB Stepfan Taylor has totaled 203 yards on the ground and three touchdowns in the past two combined. New QB Josh Nunes threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns against the Blue Devils last Saturday after totaling 125 yards and one score in his first career start a week earlier. The Cardinal is 5-0 ATS in their last five as home underdogs but the road team is 6-1 ATS in the past seven meetings.

Notre Dame An Underdog At Michigan State Spartans

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are making big news on and off the field as they visit the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday night.

The Don Best college football odds screen opened with Michigan State as 4-point favorites, but that has been bet up to 5½-6. The total is currently at 43½ and ABC will have the 8:00 p.m. (ET) national telecast from Spartan Stadium.

These teams play every year, but that could change in the future with Notre Dame just joining the ACC and the still independent Notre Dame football program guaranteeing five games a year against that conference.

The Irish (2-0 straight up, 1-1 against the spread) are ranked No. 19 in the AP Poll and No. 20 in the Coaches, but the Don Best Linemakers Poll feels more strongly about them at No. 13. That’s despite a closer than expected 20-17 victory over Purdue last week as 14-point favorites.

Junior quarterback Tommy Rees led the game-winning field goal drive after coming in with 2:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. Redshirt freshman Everett Golson was the starter, going 21-of-31 for 289 yards, but was replaced after being banged up with a thumb injury. He’s listed as probable on the Don Best injury report.

Coach Brian Kelly has continued to say that Golson is his starter, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Rees get some time and that means the Michigan State defense has to prepare for both. The Irish need to do a better job in pass protection no matter who is the signal caller, allowing five sacks last week.

One player definitely in the lineup this week is running back Cierre Wood. He rushed for over 1,100 yards last year, but was suspended the first two games this season for a rules violation. Wood should be a major upgrade after the team rushed for just 52 total yards against Purdue.

The Spartans (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) are ranked No. 10 in the AP and Coaches Poll, plus No. 11 by Don Best. They got tested in Week 1 of the season with a 17-13 comeback home win over ranked Boise State before a 41-7 blowout at Central Michigan last week.

Running back Le’Veon Bell continues to be a man among boys, rushing for two TDs last week to give him four for the season. He only had 18 carries versus a huge 44 against Boise State, so he should be fresh this Saturday.

Junior quarterback Andrew Maxwell threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns last week, plus no interceptions. He had three picks against Boise State which really brought his ability to replace the departed Kirk Cousins into question. Getting Maxwell’s confidence up against the MAC school was very important heading into Notre Dame.

The underrated Spartans defense is the biggest reason why this spread has moved in their direction. They rank No. 8 in the nation in total defense (225.5 YPG) and should fare well against Notre Dame even if they do fear the quickness and athletic ability of Golson.

The road team is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings between the teams, although splitting the last four. Notre Dame won 31-13 as 6-point home favorites last year, winning the rushing battle 114-29. That won’t come close to happening on Saturday even with Wood back.

The ‘over’ is 6-2 in the last eight matchups.

Pac-12 & SEC Battle Pits Arizona State At Missouri

Arizona State at Missouri College Football Betting Preview
Date: 9/15/2012 at 7:00 p.m. (ET)
Opening Lines: Missouri -8½, O/U 59½

Arizona State Sun Devils: The Sun Devils (2-0 straight up and against the spread) have absolutely dominated their first two opponents at home, beating the line easily against Northern Arizona and Illinois. This under new head coach Todd Graham after the team dropped five in a row both SU and ATS to end last year. Arizona State routed the Illini 45-14 last week as 5½-point home favorites with quarterbacks Taylor Kelly and Michael Eubank combining for 318 passing yards and three touchdowns. The Sun Devils also ran the ball well with 192 rushing yards on 38 carries and Cameron Marshall, D.J. Foster and Michael Eubank each scoring a TD on the ground. The ‘over’ is 10-1 in their last 11 lined games dating back to last season, including their 56-24 loss to Boise State in the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas.

Missouri Tigers: The Tigers (1-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) are coming off a crushing 41-20 home loss to Georgia last week in their SEC debut, getting blown out in the second half after leading 17-9 early in the third quarter. Missouri surrendered two touchdown passes and two TD runs in the last quarter-and-a-half in getting outscored 32-3 down the stretch. Mizzou won its season opener 62-10 over Southeastern Louisiana behind 121 yards and two scores from RB Kendial Lawrence and would be wise not to try to get into a scoring duel with Arizona State. The ‘over’ is 2-0 in the team’s last two lined games after the total went ‘under’ in three straight – all SU wins.

Canadian Bacon: Week 12 CFL betting preview
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With only eight weeks remaining on the CFL schedule, the playoff picture is beginning to take shape. Here are a few tidbits on the Week 12 matchups:

Trends
* Hamilton is 8-2 O/U this season

Canadian Bacon: Week 14 CFL betting preview
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1, 58)

The Als have rattled off six wins in seven opportunities in order to assume the top spot in the East Division where they hold a four-point advantage over Toronto heading into play this week. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo has thrown for no less than 329 yards and has a total of 10 touchdowns over his last four games against the Tiger-Cats, but Montreal failed to covered in each of those contests.

Hamilton has only one victory in its last seven games and sits four games under .500 despite leading the league in scoring (30 points per game). Quarterback Henry Burris’ 27 TD passes are also tops in the league, but it hasn’t been enough because of a crumbling defense that ranks dead last in the CFL in preventing points (31.8 ppg).

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-4.5, 48.5)

The Edmonton Eskimos have serious injury concerns at quarterback. Both regular starter Steven Jyles and backup Kerry Joseph are dealing with injuries and have been inconsistent when healthy this season. Third-stringer Matt Nichols was awarded the majority of practice time at QB this week and could get the nod Friday.

Not only did the Stampeders have their four-game winning streak snapped by Saskatchewan last week, but RB Jon Cornish was fined by the league for “mooning” some Rider fans in the process. Calgary head coach John Hufnagel said he will also discipline Cornish, who has racked up 1,118 yards from scrimmage this season, for his outlandish behavior. Whether that action has any bearing on his playing time this week remains to be seen. The Stampeders are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-3, 50.5)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers try to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they welcome the Toronto Argonauts Saturday. The Bombers snapped a four-game slide last week with a 34-12 victory over Hamilton, but Winnipeg (3-9) is still in last place in the East with just six points.

Argonatus first-year head coach Scott Milanovich announced Jarious Jackson as his starting QB this weekend because of the injury suffered by first-stringer Ricky Ray against Montreal last week. Toronto is 4-1 ATS in its last five road games.

BC Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (2.5, 48)

The Lions try for a fourth straight win this weekend when they clash with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium. QB Travis Lulay threw for 260 yards and a TD in last week’s win over Edmonton, which means he has tossed for at least one score in every game this season and 23 in a row dating back to last season.

Roughriders QB Darian Durant hasn’t enjoyed much success against BC in his career. The signal-caller hasn’t thrown a single TD pass and has been picked off five times over his last four matchups with the Lions, who are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings with Saskatchewan. The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the clubs.

Week 14

Home (28-20). Favorites (20-28), Over (23-25). West 15-9 vs East.
Home underdogs are 10-2 in the CFL this season.

Saturday's Games

Toronto (6-6) @ Winnipeg (3-9)-- What does it say that Winnipeg is favored for the first time all season? 4th road game in five weeks for Argos, who lost last two games 28-23/31-10; they beat hapless Bombers 25-22 (-7.5) back in Week 4, in Winnipeg's 4th straight road game to start season. Bombers completed just 9 of 34 passes in that game, albeit for 185 yards. Bombers aren't good team, but they split last four home games, covering all four- two of their three wins are over Hamilton, third by a point over Edmonton. Four of last five Winnipeg games stayed under the total.

BCLions (9-3) @ Saskatchewan (6-6)-- Home side won both series meetings in '12, with Lions (-2.5) losing 23-20 here way back in Week 3, then beating Riders 24-5 in rematch five weeks later (-6.5). BC won three in row, seven of last eight games; they are 4-2 SU on road, but 2-4 as road faves, with wins on the road by 26-9-1-3 points. Roughriders started season 3-0, then lost five in row, but now won three of last four games- they're 4-2 at home, with only losses by point to Hamilton, 7 to Calgary. Seven of BC's last ten games stayed under the total.

Canadian Bacon: CFL's Week 15 betting preview

Four teams are set to do battle on a holiday Monday in Canada as clubs in both divisions jockey for position in the standings with only five games remaining on the regular season schedule.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Edmonton Eskimos (0, 53)

Quarterback Henry Burris guided the Tiger-Cats to a 41-28 home win versus division-leading Montreal last week. Burris was named the CFL Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season on Tuesday after throwing for more than 300 yards and five touchdowns. Hamilton is 12-4 ATS (against the spread) in its last 16 meetings with Edmonton.

The Eskimos are in a free fall, dropping five straight outings, including a 39-15 decision at Calgary last week. Third-string QB Matt Nichols was forced into action because of injuries to Steven Jyles and Kerry Joseph in the loss. Nichols led the offense to just 242 yards on 66 plays, a unit that has failed to produce more than 18 points in each of its last four contests. Head coach Kavis Reed recently assumed control of the offense and is ready to reinstate Joseph (knee) as Friday's starter, even if he’s not 100 percent healthy.

Calgary Stampeders at B.C. Lions (-4.5, 49)

The fight for first in the West heats up Saturday night at B.C. Place when the Calgary Stampeders visit the B.C. Lions. Calgary trails B.C. by two points for top spot in the division after its convincing win over the Eskimos last week. The victory was the fifth in the last six games for the Stampeders, who are 8-0 ATS in their last eight contests in B.C.

The Lions were held to a single point through the first 30 minutes of last week’s six-point loss at Saskatchewan. But to make matters worse, WRs Geroy Simon (hamstring) and Arland Bruce (concussion) fell to injuries in the defeat and are doubtful versus Calgary. The Lions have only covered once in their last six games overall.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Montreal Alouettes (Odds N/A)

The Blue Bombers dropped a 29-10 decision to the Argonauts last week and lost QB Buck Pierce (concussion) in the process after he took a hit under the chin from Toronto LB Brandon Isaac. Joey Elliott will assume the starting QB role Monday if Pierce isn’t cleared to play. Elliot was picked off three times in relief of Pierce last week, thwarting Winnipeg’s comeback attempt. The Blue Bombers have played under the total in four consecutive games.

Montreal sits alone in first place in the East and enjoys a two-point cushion over the Argonauts with five games to play. The Als fell 41-28 to the Tiger-Cats last Sunday, but have won two straight meetings and seven of the last nine clashes with the Bombers.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Toronto Argonauts (Odds N/A)

The Roughriders have won back-to-back games thanks to another impressive outing from QB Darian Durant. The signal-caller threw for 371 yards and three touchdowns to help guide the Riders to a thrilling 6-point win over B.C. at Mosaic Stadium last week.

The good news for the Argos at this point in the season is that all but one of their final five games will be played at home. Jarious Jackson is likely to make his second consecutive start at QB for the injured Ricky Ray (knee). Jackson tossed for a modest 155 yards and a score in the club’s win over the lowly Bombers last week. The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the clubs and Saskatchewan has failed to cover in its last four road games.
