How do you suppose they manage that? What happens if by some stroke of midfield prowess and luck, Liverpool scores the first goal. What? Inter roars back with 3 or 4 unanswered goals.
They had to close the door at 1-0...
You could have "what if" scenarios for anything, bottom line is you can expect lucky bounces.
Inter will put together a much better performance and Liverpool won't duplicate theirs. Rafa is on borrowed time and his downfall could be this tie where I predict he'll probably opt for an ultra defensive setup, "protecting" their advantage. This will only allow Inter to gain confidence and a 2/3-0 score is possible.
I actually think the 2nd half play was solid. Judging by Liverpools first half performance, and their general level of play throughout the years, it was a decent idea. They lack any creativity whatsoever, and pace in the wide positions. Sure they had all the possession, but they weren't making much of it. They were unlucky to have Materazzi sent off, and then concede the goals after their other centre-half Cordoba got injured.
Even before Materazzi was sent off Liverpool was controlling the game. I don't quite understand what you mean when you say it was a good idea. I assume you mean going into a defensive shell. Sure there really is no other option when you go down a man but to believe they were playing ok within this shell is ridiculous. You can't allow 70% possession to the other team. The times when Inter got the ball they couldn't even hold the ball for a few passes and never threatened the Liverpool goal. They failed to register a shot on goal (and only 3 shots directed at goal) the entire match, completely unacceptable. And to say Liverpool didn't take advantage is untrue. As I mentioned earlier Liverpool had three great chances within 5-10 minutes early in the second half. It was Liverpool pressure the entire half.
Just look at the Inter fans reaction. They are angry with the sending off but equally pissed with the team's performance.
There's no way you can make the case a 0-0 result would've been the right result.
