Prostitution in Thailand is illegal but openly practiced in cities like Pattaya and in Bangkok’s Patpong district
Thai professor of sociology Sathit Niyomyat, a former assistant dean at the prestigious
Thammasat University and the author of numerous studies on gender issues, has published some surprising results following a three-year research project during which she interviewed some 470 local women working in the sex industry.
In an anonymous survey, Thai prostitutes were asked to rank their preferred nationality among foreign clients — more than 6,000 of them in total — based on a variety of criteria. “We were interested in how demanding they were, the length of sexual activity, consumption of alcohol, behavior and degree of coarseness, and the solvency of sex tourists, based on nationality,” Prof. Niyomyat said, as quoted by the Czech tabloid
Blesk.

Although Slovaks topped the rankings, followed by the French and Americans, the study reportedly points out that doesn’t mean they were better lovers than the fifth-ranked Czechs: Thai sex workers have a preference for clients who are non-confrontational, undemanding — and quick.
“The least favorite customers are the Swedes. They most often seek painful practices and want sexual intercourse without a condom, often under the influence of alcohol, which prolongs the intercourse and is unpleasant for the girls,” Prof. Niyomyat said.

Sex tourism is particularly prevalent in South East Asia, where the connected problems of human trafficking, AIDS, and poverty, continue to flourish and claim lives at unprecedented rates. Prostitution in Thailand is illegal, although in practice it is tolerated, partly regulated, and practised openly throughout the country.
With its vast numbers of host bars, gogo bars, massage parlours, saunas, and hourly hotels, serving foreign tourists as well as locals, Pattaya is among the most notorious destinations in Thailand for sex tourism.
