Trying not to derail the thread but last month I spent a few weeks in Vietnam (Hanoi) and Siem Reap, Cambodia. I plan on going to Thailand and Laos next year.
I feel Cambodia is a somewhat hidden gem - very friendly people, interesting sites (Angkor Wat), and decent nightlife in the Pub Street area. Prices are very reasonable and the US dollar is the preferred currency. Nice hotel (free breakfast, wifi, air conditioning) was $30/night, 50-cent draft beers, decent thai or western meals for around $4.
An hour foot massage was $3, full body is $8, "yum yum" and "boom boom" isn't much more. There are many legit massage parlors, so be sure to ask your tuk tuk driver for "boom boom" massage if that's what you're after. Tuk tuk rides are only a $1 or $2. A small "Happy" Pizza was $4.50 - be sure to ask specifically for the "happy" to be added or you just get a regular pizza.
I thought the girls were very sweet and some looked pretty good - most are thin, try to dress nice (despite living in poverty, avg wage is $60 month) and have the nicest smiles and very beautiful eyes. One might be disappointed though if used to the quantity and quality of women in Thailand. Not sure about the P4P scene since I just went to the massage parlors. I've heard Phnom Penh has a better nightlife and Sihanoukville has some decent beaches (aka Snookyville).
Like Thailand, Cambodians love americans because they tend to spend more, tip better, and show more respect than the Korean tourists do. Korean tourists in Siem Reap mostly spend their money at Korean owned hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
Despite the fairly recent atrocities in Cambodia, the people seem very friendly and optimistic. Walking the streets in Siem Reap at night felt safer than SoCal. A few beggars were around but hardly any scammers (especially compared to Hanoi). I highly recommend Siem Reap for anyone looking to relax and get off the beaten path or maybe on a visa run from Thailand.
