Just to play the devil's advocate, I can fly a couple hours from here and be in the Caribbean which has idyllic places like that - versus flying 20 hours to get to Bangkok.

Yeah but you wont be able to stay at 4 star resorts for $40 a night, or get the royal treatment that Americans get there. The culture of the Thai people is an experience you wont get in the caribbean. Krabi's off the track too, when I went there, there were no other foreigners there besides us. Theres a laid back attitude there, it's not for everyone though.

From reading Stickman Bangkok's columns over the past couple years, he says there is growing sentiment against the "farang" there. And, it will cost me at least 4 times
as much in flight costs to get there.

I was initially really intrigued about the place, but I've concluded that it's really more for the single guy, retired guy, or sex-tourist. I don't fall into any of those
categories, though I still am looking for cheap retirement locations.

I went with my wife a month ago andwe had the time of our life. We were down in Krabi it was unlike any place i have ever seen. We stayed on Koh Hai 4 star hotel and it 50 a night. Was an hour or so flight from bangkok an hour or so busride to the docks and a 45 min or so longtail ride to the island. We kept the longtail driver for the 4 nights we were there and he drove us all aroundthe islands snorkeling the emerald cave on koh mook for 30 bucks a day. Cant get that here in CR.Also in costa rica I cant get a decent room for less than 80. I've lived in CR for the last 12 years and Thailand literally blew my mind.Cannot wait to get back over there. You have to see it to believe it.

Zit I felt nothing but absolute kindness from the people over there. So much friendlier than the ticos in CR. And I really like Ticos here.

Do you guys see any difference in banging cheap whores in the US vs the ones in Thailand? I understand that you can get better looking chicks for the dollar....but they are still cheap (i.e. they are cheap for every other Tom, Dick, Joe, Harry, etc.) much like the gals at the truck stop which I am assuming you probably wouldn't like twice at. If I were going to pay a hooker, by my logic, I would want one that is expensive so as to limit my exposure to the possibility of her getting railed by some creepy old guy every night. I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't see why some of you seem to think nothing of paying a hooker for services in Thailand but would never (or rarely) do so with chicks in the US.

Looks like paradise to me

This looks just like a place we stopped in during a sail-boating trip through St. Marteen.

Where do I start? Let's leave out the women issue and go from there...

I love golf and play3/4 times a week on championship courses with women caddies..prices vary from 40-67 bucks which includes cart and caddy...most courses have good restaurants and excellent facilities which include locker rooms...I have a choice of only around 35 courses, all within an hour's drive....

I live in a 32 story condo on the 32nd floor overlooking the ocean about 100 yards from the beach...I get great sunsets and can watch all the water sports from my balcony...I rent this place from a friend of a friend for 600 bucks a month...In my complex includes a post office, 7-11, a sports-pub, a Thai restaurant, and a Thai massage parlor...I get at least 3/4 massages a week...a full body oil massage costs 300 baht an hour(around 10 bucks)...a happy ending is optional....a foot massage or neck massage is 200 baht an hour....these are great right after golf....

There are many cultural museums and zoos here that explain the Thai culture that are must sees; especially with friends or relatives in town...

The Thais are a friendly people as long as respect is given...Westerners with big mouths are not welcome....it is very laid back and you can relax anywhere you want at the numerous resorts, pools, pubs, or beer bars...

The weather is tropical and it does rain at times..Very rare does the rain continue after an hour....only been rained out in golf 3 times in 3 years...we usually play at 7AM...

Now to the women...let's just say I am a kid in a candy store...you have to be here to believe it....their outlook on sex and taking care of their man is completely opposite of that in the states...put it this way, in Thailand I am Warren Beatty, in the states I am Ned Beatty....you older guys will get that line...

The food is great and cheap...great European and Thai dishes....and of course there are all the fast food places available...

The Malls are modern and the movie theatres and bowling alleys are also....go-karting and formula race driving(mini-cars) are popular here....

For guys over 50, you can get a retirement visa that permits you to stay in Thailand forever, as long as you check in every 90 days at immigration, takes about 5 minutes...

Most important about living here...you give respect, you get respect back in return...

Confrontations are frowned upon and that includes driving....

Seymour, Did you go to Phuket when you were there? I did read some on Stickman Bangkok about Phuket, he said the beaches are great, though things are
a little pricier than Bangkok and Pattaya.

You mentioned being interested in Vietnamese women earlier in
the thread. What has turned you on about Vietnam?

Do you have any resources you'd point me to?

No, not really. I've only recently come to the realization that Vietnam might be a better place to retire than Thailand because of my end of life plans. Since I don't have any children, my plan in retirement was to marry someone much younger than me(by that time mid-30's would qualify) with the understanding that they will take care of me in my old age and then she gets everything I have when I croak. As much as I love the Thai girls, the cultural differences, if they aren't being over-exaggerated, make a Thai-farang marriage extremely complicated. Everything I've read says that the husband would never be better than 3rd on the wife's priority list behind her parents and children. Out of the other SE Asian countries, Vietnam is the only other one that has any appeal to me. Plus, my understanding is that Vietnamese women revere their husbands. More research is to be done of course, but I'm 20 years away from retirement at minimum so I'm not in a hurry.
